Zen center offers an oasis of quiet By JULI GOETZ MORSER For The Beachcomber
On the small hill above KVI Beach, a modest sign on the green door of stately house reads Puget Sound Zen Center (PSZC) and marks the building’s most recent incarnation as a Zen Buddhist temple. Behind the door is a small vestibule with a rack for guests to place their shoes before entering the meditation hall, a spare, elegant and serene space. Two rows of meditation cushions rest on the wood floor, each facing the other in traditional Zen fashion. At the end of the room, before French doors that open onto a deck overlooking Tramp Harbor, a simple alter holds a large wooden Buddha, a vase with flowers and two candles. Like any space dedicated to the sacred, the room emanates a reverent beauty. But unlike the nave of a typical church where spoken words of scripture continuously fill the air, this meditation hall mostly contains the spacious quality of silence. “That’s because Zen Buddhism is a path,” explained Abbot Koshin Christopher Cain, head and founder, along with his wife Soshin Lidunn Cain,
of PSZC. “It has religious aspects like chanting and bowing and ceremony, but what distinguishes it ... is that Zen is a practice, something you do with your body. In Zen Buddhism, the primary duty of a Zen practitioner is to learn to meditate deeply.” The tradition of Zen Buddhism practiced at the center comes from a Japanese word that means “just sitting,” said Elizabeth Fitterer, a board member at the center. “The focus is on getting to know your own mind,” she said. Fitterer explained the practice of meditation how Cain once explained it to her: like being in a deep, dark forest and trying to find the way to the cool water. Attend a morning meditation session — all are welcome with no previous meditation experience required — and experience first hand a taste of this Zen practice. A member from the center greets and orients visitors. First comes the tea ceremony, followed by chanting, walking meditation outside on the deck, sitting meditation inside on the cushions or chairs, a short SEE BUDDHISM, 16

After a slow start due to the less than perfect weather in the spring, the Vashon Farmers Market has caught up and has surpassed last year’s sales. Even with mid-season manager transitions, VIGA president Merrilee Runyan expects the season to remain strong. The market will move into McMurray the first weekend in November, and the vendors will remain basically the same for the duration of the season. The sun sank low in the sky last Friday evening while families with young children cast their lines in the water at Manzanita Beach, and several men sat on a log, watching for a sign that pinks were swimming by. Pinks, as many know, are pink salmon, which come through Puget Sound from the ocean every other year on their way back to the region’s rivers to spawn. More than 6 million salmon are expected to pass through the sound this season, the peak of which occurs in August, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). On Vashon, those numbers mean good fishing — and not just for old pros, either.
“Pinks are very good feeders,” said Doug Milward, the ocean salmon manager with WDFW. “They’re great for beginners. You just have to get something pink or silver in front of them, and they will bite.” Indeed, Kelly and Nick Keenan and their children Mallory, 7, and Gavin, 5, were all trying their luck at Manzanita after attempting to catch a pink for a few weeks. So far, their efforts had come up short, though they said they had fished next to people who had reeled fish in. Some of the kids’ fishing efforts gave way to splashing in waves and scrambling on low-hanging trees, but they all remained optimistic in the evening light. “We’re hoping today is our lucky day,” Kelly said. Just a short distance down the beach, Joe Wald, 19, reported considerably more luck than the Keenans. Over the last four days, he said, he had fished for about 24 hours,
hooked about 10 pinks and caught a few. The fish are not hitting fast, he said, and slow movements are needed to be successful. “You have to present it just right,” he said. Pinks are the most abundant Pacific salmon and are found from Alaska to Washington, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They typically weigh between 3 and 5 pounds and measure up to 25 inches long. Their numbers are increasing, Milward said, because unlike other salmon species, they are not hurt to a large degree by humans’ detrimental actions to freshwater habitats. Pinks spend very little time in rivers, he noted, and the increase in their numbers has both positive and negative aspects. When they are very small, he said, pinks are food for coho and chinook salmon. But the picture is more complicated than that. SEE SALMON, 14

No watering is needed at care center’s flourishing vegetable garden By SARAH LOW Staff writer
For six years, the vegetable garden at Vashon Community Care (VCC) presented volunteer Julia Lakey with a problem. Given its location on the property and her busy schedule, consistent watering was difficult. After a visit to a “dry farm� in Sequim last summer, Lakey thought she might have the answer.  Now, healthy vegetables are in abundance — all thriving with no water other than rain. Lakey is a retired teacher who currently spends her time as a housepainter and gardener. Six years ago, she was inspired to volunteer to plant and maintain a vegetable garden at VCC. “My mother is a resident here. I would come to visit her, and I would look around and think, ‘If I were living here, that’s something I’d like to have,’� she said. “And I’ve always loved dirt and soil.� The garden is located across the driveway on the site of the old nursing home, making access to water difficult. Several methods have been tried over the years but nothing worked particularly well, especially given the time constraints of both Lakey and her volunteers. The financial impact of her project was also a concern for Lakey, who noted that all of the garden expenses are covered through donations except the water costs. “The Center has to pay for the water they

minated have been documented in both a video, “Back to Eden,� and print, with stories that have run in local newspapers and Sunset magazine. When Lakey saw how successful his farm was, it occurred to her that this could be the solution that she needed for the garden at VCC. “I needed a low-maintenance idea with a water solution that would save money. I didn’t know if it would work,� she said. “It was an experiment.� An experiment that has paid-off. With donations from multiple island businesses
and organizations, including Sustainable Vashon and the island sawmill, Lakey was able to grow the dry-garden. Very large amounts of wood chips or mulch is the key; from 12 to 18 inches is recommended. This slows the evaporation of moisture from the soil, Lakey said, holds in whatever rain falls and keeps weeds from proliferating. Lakey planted the garden in late March, and the only water it has had since April has been rain. The results are obvious now, as vegetables such as cabbage, shoulderhigh corn, broccoli, chard and kale have all flourished. The only difference, Lakey noted, is that the plants seem to take a little longer to develop and some may not be quite as big as they might be using conventional methods, but otherwise everything is healthy and thriving. While this waterless success would be a good fit for the Island Ingenuity Tour, where islanders can showcase the ways they’ve chosen to simplify their lives, save money, and conserve resources, it doesn’t take place until later this fall. Lakey encourages those interested in the garden and the dry method not to wait. “Now is really the time to see it. The weather has been so dry; this is test-time,� she said. “By the end of September, everything will be harvested.� Surveying her garden surroundings, Lakey said she is pleased with the results and would like to do more — but with a caveat. “There is room to expand�, she said, “but we’d definitely need more volunteers.� The dry-garden at VCC is located on the north side of the property and is open to the public.

Market manager leaves mid-season By SARAH SCHWARZ For The Beachcomber
Last Saturday’s Farmers Market was the last day as manager for Johanna Guevin. Long time islander Jordan Beck will be taking over the position for the rest of the season, after which, the VIGA board will go through a more formal hiring process. “We are so sad to see her go,” said Vashon Island Growers Association President Merrilee Runyan. “She is a wonderful young woman with tremendous energy. We certainly have nothing but good feelings and appreciation for her.” VIGA, which runs the weekly Farmers Market, hired Guevin earlier this year to manage the market. Originally from Georgia, she moved to the island from Sitka, Alaska for the position, in hope that her husband would find a job in Seattle and join her later in the year, she said. Since this did not pan out, she will be moving back to Sitka. She still hopes to move to Vashon with him permanently, when it makes financial sense. “I definitely still want to move here,” she said. “When the time is right.” She said that she and her husband have known they want to move to an island in the Pacific Northwest for some time now. They researched the islands in the area, and Vashon stood out. “The schools are great,” said Guevin. “We have family and friends in Seattle, so it made sense. Also, I am a farmer and the soil here is amazing,

ability present in the Vashon farming community. “It has been one of the hardest decisions to move back,” said Guevin. “Vashon is a community filled with so many different talents and passions.” She hopes to eventually return to the market, most likely as a vendor, when she and her husband start a small farm. She has experience farming both vegetables and animals of different varieties. When Beck heard that Guevin was leaving, she offered to step up and serve as the interim manager. The VIGA board wanted to create a smooth transition, and Beck’s experience with the market made her a good fit, said Runyan. “I had always considered the position, but never thought I was ready,” said Beck. “Now I feel ready.” She began working with the market many years ago as a vendor, when she interned with an island farm. She now has a small homestead with her family, which includes chickens and in the past, pigs. This year, she has been serving on the VIGA board, though she will take a leave of absence from this position while she holds the role of manager. Beck and Guevin worked together at last week’s market, and Beck will take over fully Saturday. Both Runyan and Guevin have enormous confidence in Beck, and feel that she will make the transition smooth and easy. “We couldn’t have found a better person to replace me,” said Guevin.

The Vashon Council is intended to provide community feedback and insight to the Franciscans. Herbicide use at park causes concern
The community grapples with another tragedy
Islanders should speak up if they hope to have a say in the the use of chemicals
The difficult news came in to The Beachcomber office on Saturday: An islander in his early 20s had ended his life the night before. In a year when too many of the island’s young people have died, it is yet another enormous loss. And for his loved ones, we imagine it is painful beyond measure. In the time since learning this news, we have thought a great deal about how we, as the community newspaper, should respond both to this man’s death and to the larger issue of suicide, which takes the lives of 30,000 people in this country annually and has claimed three young islanders in less than a year — and possibly others as well. Our longstanding policy is to not report incidents of suicide. In fact, it is unusual for us to report stories when people die from any cause unless something about that person’s death puts him or her in the spotlight. Perhaps the person was a high school student; maybe there was an extensive search or a tragic accident or the person had a high profile in the community. Additionally, newspapers need to be particularly careful because some studies have found that covering suicide can lead to “suicide contagion” and lead to further tragedy. At the same time, we understand that suicide is a public health issue — and as an issue, it warrants coverage, and we intend to do our part to bring light to the difficult subject. Just recently, several King County experts convened and are calling for action to prevent suicides among teenagers after a high number of youth suicides in the county in 2012. Their plan includes increasing public awareness about the warning signs of suicide and making improvements in the mental health system and services, including in schools. Their plan also calls for more education for families and communities about safe firearm storage and to advocate for safe firearm storage legislation. We plan to report more about that effort in the coming weeks. At Vashon Youth & Family Services, Executive Director Kathleen Johnson spoke to the difficult year the island has faced and stressed that professionals there are trained and ready to help those who need it. VYFS accepts many types of insurance and Medicaid and offers a sliding scale as well. Johnson also noted that people struggle differently, solutions vary and all that we can do is look after one another, care for one another and call upon available resources when necessary. We think that sounds like good advice. And for now, regarding this most recent tragedy, we are leaving the story of this young man’s life to those who knew and loved him best. And we, like many of you, will hold his family and friends in our thoughts and hearts in their difficult days ahead.
Have you been for a walk at Maury Island Marine Park lately? It’s time to go. The weather is great, the mile-long unspoiled beach beckons, and you know you need the exercise. Notice the many improvements made by the 24 energetic young people with the Washington Conservation Corps. New trails and new plantings combine with the usual tremendous view of Puget Sound to make this one-mile jaunt a winner. The hill back to the top will test your cardiovascular system. And now there’s a new must-see: large tracts of dead blackberries that have been sprayed with the herbicide Garlon 3A; over 9 acres all told. This caught me quite by surprise. The Vashon-Maury Island Groundwater Committee has worked hard over the years to make islanders aware that when they use an herbicide or pesticide, it’s not going away. It goes from the store shelf onto the land, and from there a lot of it ends up in the groundwater or Puget Sound. It doesn’t just disappear. Once it’s out of the sprayer, there’s no reasonable way to clean it up. The cumulative negative effects will be with us for generations. Living on an island where the only source of water is rain, plus the water recycled from our irrigation and septic systems, it’s doubly important to avoid soiling the source. Those who appreciate the beauty and health of Puget Sound, from the eel grass to the orcas, certainly know of the sound’s continuing “death by 1,000 cuts.” Most of us do our best to avoid administering yet another cut. So King County Parks’ use of herbicides causes me concern. Why is this happening? About a month ago I started asking questions. Why spray a “natural area” park? Why spray along the shoreline
ENVIRONMENT By FRANK JACKSON of the premier aquatic reserve on Puget Sound? Aren’t there probable negative effects of the Garlon 3A (triclopyr, byproducts and surfactants) on the health of the young workers, on the birds, frogs, bees and small mammals, on the groundwater and on the marine organisms in Puget Sound? Why not use goats? Or tractors? Or walkers armed with clippers? I asked the workers, the state project coordinator and the King County Parks project manager. Their answers, given openly and in full belief of their validity, relied mainly on the information provided by Dow AgroSciences, the manufacturer of Garlon 3A. They told me triclopyr has a short half-life and has not been shown to cause human health problems — if people avoid getting it in their eyes or on their skin. Using herbicides is cheap, and they only use minimal quantities in weak dilutions. Negative effects on the environment will be offset by restoration improvements. Without pesticides, they say the new plantings will be overtaken by the blackberries. They say that it will only look bad for a while, after which the plantings will take hold and shade out the blackberries. I pondered these answers while I walked, looking at the devastating effect of small amounts of the Garlon3A on the blackberries and other plants. I pondered rain on the steep slopes down to the beach where the herbicide was being applied and the unlikelihood that any shade trees will take hold in that sand and gravel for 20 years. Some 80 hours of effort later (which is why the house hasn’t gotten painted, dear) I’ve emailed with environmental chemists, read numerous studies, looked at websites that evaluate various herbicides, walked the sprayed areas and corresponded with the decision-makers for this project.

Unfortunately, the current parks decision-makers are dead set on using herbicides on the blackberries. They have to kill the roots, they say. The risks are real, and far exceed the benefits of removing the blackberries. The risks involve not only triclopyr, but the break-down products of triclopyr and the surfactants used to adhere it to the plants. Triclopyr is showing up in Puget Sound. Detecting triclopyr breakdown products is very difficult. A good summary of risks is at the Thurston County website, / www.co.thurston.wa.us/health/ ehipm/terrestrialreview.html, which shows triclopyr (TEA) to have moderate potential hazard for human toxicity, aquatic toxicity and persistence and high potential hazard for “other mammals,” bird toxicity and “mobility hazard.” Bees incur negative effects from the surfactant Syl Tac being used. What does the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say? The EPA is hamstrung by “trade secret” provisions in legislation and the burden to prove ill-effects. Of the 83,000 EPA-listed chemicals of concern, only five have been banned, limited or restricted. The president of Consumer Reports decries the situation in the Sept. 2013 issue. Islanders should be concerned. This new normal for King County Parks is going to affect all parks. No notice was given to the community before the herbicide spraying was essentially completed. We need to collectively speak up or expect more of the same. Do you give a hoot? They do give a hoot and are among the few that could keep island parks free of herbicides. And clip a few blackberries around the plantings when you go on that walk. Island youth is on a good path and has excellent chances for success It sounds like Luther Marinez is a really fine young boy we can all be well proud of. (“Help my son feel safe,” July 31.) The letter brings up the threat brought up by the Zimmerman trial and the Trayvon Martin shooting, which the public has seemingly gone overboard on fixing the blame. Most news articles, etc. have implied that Zimmerman is guilty of murder despite what the jury trial concluded. Now is a good time to read a news article of “The Week,” which is considered one of the best national and international magazines. The July 26 issue reports the following. The Zimmerman haters didn’t care about facts or justice. They wanted a racial morality play. To create one. Prosecutors tried to turn Martin into a saint, said Jeffrey Kuhner in The Washington Times. They circulated a photo of him, an angelic 12-year-old, baby-faced boy. But at the time of his death, Martin was a 6-foot 3-inch man child with a history of drug use, who had been suspended several times from school. “If this wannabe thug had kept his cool and not tried to
beat Zimmerman into a pulp, he’d still be alive today,” it said. Luther Marinez’s chances of growing up here on Vashon or wherever and becoming a contributor to society are still excellent. — Paul Schwartz
Vashon Park District
Difficult meetings and mismanagement have taken their toll I don’t blame anyone for not going to Vashon Park District meetings. Witnessing that toxic environment is a lousy way to end a work day. I’ve been at most of them since last autumn, along with a small group of regulars who seem to be there representing their programs, such as Point Robinson, the pool, the skate park and Paradise Ridge Park, all of which depend on VPD funds and services. These programs have been continually threatened by the commissioners’ colossal mismanagement of the VES fields project. As more of the commissioners’ actions have come to light, I’ve wondered why so few people seem to care. Guaranteeing a matching contribution with funds that
never existed and stating that $125,000 of Vashon Park District funds were to be contributed to the project. That part’s now well over $1,250,000 (1,000 percent more than estimated); the lack of skilled project management and oversight; continuing changes to the project as deliverables diminished but costs increased; this year’s critical State auditors’ report; the impact on Vashon Park District staffing, programs and services as more funds are poured into VES. Look at the history of other major park district programs. You’ll find committed volunteers who championed developing and sustaining those projects. The equestrian community made sure the funds were raised before any work to cover the Paradise Ridge arena was begun. This was clearly not the case with the VES fields. The evidence is that VES was never driven by community support but by the egos of a few VPD commissioners. Even before the first phase of the VES grant was signed in March 2008, the VPD commission failed to rally the principal users of the fields. This would have made an entirely different experience and a source of community pride rather than bitter feelings, recrimination and contention. There’s a park district election coming up for commissioners. You might want to vote for commissioners who will lead in making the great a great place to work and who will attend to the whole system. — Steve Sussman

On Thursday morning, July 25th, my three mules took a walkabout on the main highway. We’ve missed out on a few houses this year because they sold so fast. I don’t know how people can make up their minds in a day that they want to buy something. We were pre-approved with our lender but now she is saying we have to update all of that information again to stay pre-approved. How can we buy if things are moving so fast and the lenders want more and more paperwork all the time?
A:
It can be very frustrating to be in such a busy market. Part of the reason for this market is due to pent up demand and low inventory, plus concerns that interest rates and prices are going up.
I recommend that you go see everything in your price range on a regular basis. The more you see the better you will hone your skills at judging a house and property. Many people fall in love with a home that was nothing like what they thought they wanted. You don’t know until you look. Once you’re clear about what will work for you, it should get easier to make up your mind quickly. Remember that nothing will be perfect. You have to be flexible or you’ll end up never having a home here at all. No home will have all that you’re looking for so narrow down the field to the one or two most important things. You can create the rest as you live in the house. As for getting a loan, the lenders all have more regulations now than ever before and they have to know that you are still in the same position financially that you were months ago. You may have lost a job, changed jobs, charged up a credit debt, or any number of things that will change the picture for your home loan. Be patient and keep the lender informed and updated all the time. You will need that preapproval letter to go with any offer to buy. Get organized so that all of your financial information is at your figure tips. Good luck!

Shape Up Vashon and Vashon Watersports partnered for a beach party Sunday, Aug. 4. About 40 people, of all ages, attended for an afternoon of water activities. They tried out paddle boards and kayaks, many for the first time, said Kathleen Davis, one of the event’s organizers. John Burke demonstrated how to use his survival raft, and naturalist Rayna Holtz led a nature walk through the Burton Park woods. Both the walk and the raft were crowd pleasers, and Davis said many of the first-time boaters really enjoyed their experiences. A highlight for Davis was watching Sierra and River Gregorich (above) learn to use the paddle boards. They enjoyed it so much that they went out whenever two boards were free, she said. Flying high in Open Air Open Air, an outdoor aerial festival, will take flight at 4 p.m. Saturday on the grounds of the Open Space for Arts & Community. The event — described by organizers as a “splash of circus and magic in the meadow” — will feature performers, including rope artist Terry Crane, performing with Upswing Dance Co.; local artists Janet McAlpin and Lynelle Sjoberg debuting a new piece; Martha Enson, Esther Edelman and a group of students she calls “her silkworms;” the mother/daughter duo of Elizabeth Klob and Madeleine Schroeder, Lisa Elliot and her students; Leah Mann, David Godsey
and the Rock Island String Kollective. There will also be an appearance by Dragon, a creation of island designer and theater artist Patricia Toovey. Audience members will see all the performers fly through the air, while hopefully enjoying a blue-sky view of Mount Rainier in the background. Attendees are urged to bring picnics and blankets and spread out to enjoy the all-ages show. Admission is by donation, with $10 suggested for adults and $3 for children. Artistic directors for the event are cellists Douglas Davis and Rowena Hammill, who moved to Vashon in 2007 after storied careers spent playing in prestigious orchestras and chamber music ensembles all over the world. The pair’s home base was Los Angeles, a place where they met while sharing a music stand in the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Before and after Vashon Chamber Music Summer Festival evening concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Sunday, at the Vashon Methodist church. Tickets are $18 and $22. The festival’s Brunch with Beethoven benefit takes place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron Center. Tickets, which include a brunch buffet, are $50. Hammill still commutes frequently to Los Angeles to perform. On Vashon, they founded Vashon Allied Arts Chamber Music Series, a program that, for the past few years, has brought top players in the rarified world
of classical and chamber music to the island for intimate concerts. A three-day summer music performance is something new for the couple, though. The music will start on Friday evening, with a program at the Methodist church that will feature the 1906 Ravel String Quartet, performed by longtime Seattle Symphony musi-
cians Cecilia Poellein Buss, Kathleen Boyer and Timothy Hale, with cellist Hammill. After an intermission, Shostakovich’s String Quartet no. 5 will be performed by Russian violinists Mikhail Shmidt and Natasha Bazhanov, with violist Heather Bentley and Hammill. On Saturday morning, concert attendees will be offered a spread of croissants, fruit and mimosas to accompany “Brunch with Beethoven” at the Blue Heron. Davis and Hammill will be joined by pianist Jessica Choe and clarinetist Jennifer Nelson for a program featuring the Beethoven op. 11 Clarinet Trio. The Saturday concert is a benefit performance to help defray the artists’ fees for the festival. The Sunday afternoon concert, at the Methodist church, will begin with a Mozart Viola Quintet in C Major featuring Seattle Symphony violinist Leonid Keylin, violist Julie Whitton and Vashon violinist, Karin Choo. Rounding out the concert will be a Debussy String Quartet and the Brahms Quintet for Clarinet and Strings with Jennifer Nelson, principal clarinet of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra.

Musicians play two albums, start to finish Fans of the Beatles and Bob Dylan can hear island players interpret two of the music icons’ most celebrated albums at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Red Bicycle Bistro. The event, produced by Vashon Events, will feature 27 local musicians, singing either solo or duet renditions of every song on The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul� and Bob Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline� albums — platters that are ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine, respectively, as number five and four of the greatest records of all time. “The concept for playing albums cover to cover gives us a chance to take the audience on a musical journey,� said Allison Shirk, Vashon Events co-founder and emcee for the event. “These songs are extremely nostalgic for most people, and when our favorite local musicians bring them back to life live, it can be very emotional.� The lineup for the evening will include songs sung by Vashon music legends Ron Hook, Carter Castle and John Browne, and bluesy turns on stage by Dianne Krouse and Jamie Jackson. Chris Ballew, who founded the 90s powerhouse band The Presidents of the United States of America, now lives part-time on Vashon, and he’ll also perform.
The event is a benefit for Vashon Events, a new website created by Shirk and Pete Welch that aims to be the go-to spot for finding out what’s happening in the island’s busy Pete Welch Photo arts, culture and char- Bluesman John Browne ity scenes. Vashon Events also produces its own music events and provides extensive services to musicians. So far, the site has been a labor of love for Shirk and Welch, but Welch said funds are needed to keep the web page up and running. Tickets to the concert are $10 each. “There is only so much gravel,” he said. “There is only so much freshwater. They do compete, but they are also food. The door swings both ways.” Islander Joseph Bogaard, the deputy director of Save our Wild Salmon in Seattle, said he is looking forward to fishing with his kids, and while the pinks have begun to make their way in, the best part of the season is expected to be in the next two to four weeks. “It’s a huge fishing opportunity,” he said. “At the height of the run, you hear about people who get a fish every other cast.” He, too, noted the large numbers of pinks relative to other species and stressed salmon’s ability to survive over time, though people have pushed their limits.“You give these fish habitat, and they will take it,” he said. Salmon’s roots in the Northwest date back a long way, he said, and include sabertooth salmon that lived in this area before the Ice Age and measured up to 8 feet long. “Salmon are a fish of mystery, which is part of their

put on ice. “They’re not forgiving if you do not care for them right,” he added. Wald, who smoked his fish, has high praise for the fish when cared for properly. “They’re fantastic,” he said. Licenses are required before heading off to fish, Milward, noted, and on Vashon the limit is four pinks a day. He also cautioned that people need to be sure what kind of salmon they are catching, as chinook salmon, which are listed as a threatened species by the Environmental Protection Agency, are also in the area, and only hatchery chinook can be caught and kept. Hatchery fish have had the adipose fin — a small fin on the back ridge — removed to distinguish them from wild chinook. Those who are caught breaking the rules will be ticketed, he said. He also suggested people use single hooks and pinch their barbs down so they can catch and release fish they cannot or do not want to keep. At Manzanita Beach, Carl Nelson, who said he grew up fishing on Vashon, walked down the beach to join family members and others waiting on the log, scanning the water for signs of the pinks. Once people catch a fish in a certain place, he said, that’s where they head, and after catching his first pinks there some 25 years ago, Manzanita is that place for him. “I drug everybody here tonight,” Nelson said. “You get hooked. You keep coming back.” His nephew Will Zike, 15, was one of those who Nelson had “drug along” that night, though Will said he had also spent a lot of time fishing at Lisabuela. So far, Zike said, this season he had caught seven fish compared to his father David Zike’s one. WDFW’s Milward encourages those who want to fish to head out soon. “There’s more coming. The next few weeks will be the heart of the season,” he said. “When you’ve got millions going by, you’ve got a good chance.”

Western religion. About that same time, I stumbled across a book in the attic, “The Way of Zen,” by Alan Watts, and saw the Bill Moyers’ interview with Joseph Campbell on The Power of Myth. That series rocked my world. It rang so true then, and affects me now, as I really do think it is all about stories. There’s the Zen story; we have our story and our practice. But our story and practice are linked to other people’s stories and practices, more than we think. I am happy that I did one thing (the Rinzai tradition of Zen Buddhism) and did it down deep, but by doing that I always hoped I would connect with other paths down there.” The center’s mission is to “provide a welcoming place and a nourishing community for the study and practice of Zen.” It does so by encouraging interfaith services and organizing community outreach programs. It is possible the story of Puget Sound Zen Center is not only about going deep within Zen Buddhism but also about connecting with other paths and people right here, on Vashon Island.

While silence may seem a bit daunting, a bit cool at first glance, a second look at the programs and people who make up the center shows nothing but warmth, connection and a rising interest in the center. With the increase of membership from both Vashon and the greater Puget Sound area plus the expansion of programs and activities, the center, celebrating its 10th year this fall, is bursting the seams of its much-loved home. PSZC now seeks a larger place, with more room for meditation, a kitchen, ample parking and an outdoor area for walking and reflection. While PSZC offers classes in Zen Buddhism, discussion nights, a women’s group, half-day sits and retreats, the greatest energy currently generated in the center comes from a couple of programs that Koshin Cain referred to as two ends of the spectrum: “In our family group with lots of young kids and in our groups that explore the end of life.” Family Zen, led by Soshin Cain, meets the second Sunday of the month. All family members who wish to explore Zen Buddhism are invited to attend. Zen Center member Marsha Morrison portrayed Family Zen as an opportunity to share with her granddaughter the format and rituals of a spiritual tradition. “She loves the neat rows of cushions on the floor, the teacups and the bells,” Morrison said. “This Sunday morning experience each month fills my heart with joy.” Based on a program from Oregon’s Sacred Art of Living Center, PSZC’s Waking to Living and Dying, led by Carol Spangler and Cheryl Ellsworth, offers classes and discussion about living one’s life fully, with intention, and embracing one’s death as a natural part of life. As part of the Waking to Living and Dying program, PSZC will work this fall with Vashon Community Care to record the residents’ stories. “There is a long tradition of honoring the elders in Eastern traditions,” said Koshin Cain. “We’d like the center to be a place where people can talk about end of life, and we’ve always wanted our living and dying program to have a community aspect.” “Community” is a word that often comes up when talking with Cain. For Cain, the experience opened up an unexpected sense of joy and unity. “Often one’s colleagues are within one’s own faith. My colleagues here are leaders of other faiths. It is quite rare to have a truly interfaith service. The island culture encourages interfaith,” said Cain. “There is an island identity that we all share, a strong identity that brings people together … and trumps other things that might keep us apart.” “Story” is another word Cain frequently uses. It surfaces when he speaks about the Waking to Living and Dying program. “There is general thinking that one of the greatest gifts is the ability to tell one’s story,” he said.
