Unsolicited offers for homes raise red flags Island homeowners receive unsolicited offers to purchase home By Megan Managan

It started with a letter. Earlier in July, several Mercer Island homeowners got a letter in the mail – an unsolicited offer on their home. At least six letters went out to residents on the Island, including to Peni Schwartz, the managing broker with Windermere Real Estate on Mercer Island. “My husband opened the letter and it was an ‘oh my gosh this is an offer on the house’ moment,” said Schwartz. The problem – the couple isn’t interested in selling their home and upon further inspection, the contract included

with the letter featured what some agents have deemed scary language. The letters, all from Jim Thorpe, explain he is looking for a home in the area and would like to make the homeowners an offer. The packet includes a purchase/sale agreement which simply needed the home owners signature. The letter states that Thorpe is a real estate investor and builder who is looking for a new property for his family, along with a rental property. He explains he likes to make the process easy. “I determine the highest and best price I can, move quickly to do my homework, and close when I say I will,” the letter stated. “This offer is our ‘best guess’ derived solely from the tax records and an exterior drive by. This offer price might be too high or too low. It is

The MISD board of directors got its first look at the numbers at their meeting on Aug. 8. The board, which did not meet in July, left June with uncertainly as to how much money would allocated to the district, as the state budget had not yet been finalized before their final meeting in June. Yet, there is good news. School districts will be receiving more money than in the last couple of years, thanks in part to the State Supreme Court requiring the state legislature to uphold the McCleary decision. ‘Moms’ gather signatures for gun control initiative By Reporter Staff

According to Cornelia Swenson of the group, they have already received six of those back with another 120 signatures. . “Something that made me most proud,” Swenson said, “were the number of immigrants and newly-

minted American citizens who came to sign the petitions. “ “They read about it in the newspaper and these new Washington State registered voters were not going to miss this opportunity to influence our legislators,” she said. “They took the matter very seriously. Signing this citizen's initiative was an honor that they did not take for granted.”

improved funding for four years,” said Dean Mack, the ditrict’s Chief Financial/ Operating Officer. “In fact, they dramatically decreased funding over that period of time. It makes it very difficult to identify what is catch-up and what can be attributed to McCleary.” This year’s total enrollment is expected to be 4,126 students, only a slight increase from last year. Mercer Island High School’s enrollment, however, is decreasing slightly. Islander Middle School’s enrollment will increase by 2.6 percent. According to the MISD 2013-14 budget, the beginning general fund balance is $4.9 million with $47.7 million in revenues, making the total funds available $52.7 million. With expenditures at $48.3 million, the projected ending balance in 2014 is $4.4 million.

The transportation vehicle fund includes money which will help purchase one new 78 passenger bus, and two 22 passenger special education buses with lifts. Those purchases are expected to cost around $500,000. The District is also wrapping up construction this summer on the new concession stand, press box at the MIHS football stadium. The project included a new press box, concessions stand building near where the old press box was, as well as an update to the restrooms at the stadium. Other projects done this summer include: fire alarm upgrades, a generator/electrical upgrades at Island Middle School, adding a new portable to Island Park Elementary and doing technology improvements. The presentation at last Thursday’s board meeting was the first reading of the new budget. The board is expected to approve the budget during the Aug. 22 meeting.

A glimmer of hope for state transportation funding package By Jerry Cornfield

Democrats in the state House of Representatives triggered quite a political storm this year with their plan to raise billions of dollars for transportation by, among other means, hiking the gas tax by a dime a gallon. When the clouds of conflict subsided after a regular session and two extra ones, those Democrats looked weary and had nothing to show for the effort. Now, the climate may actually be improving. Diminishing verbal showers are forecast and there’s a slim chance an agreement could arrive in a special session this fall or in the 2014 session. What’s changed the atmosphere is that members of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus, who withstood relentless pressure through 153 days by Democratic lawmakers, Gov. Jay Inslee and

pro-transportation package forces, intend to craft their own transportation funding proposal. And soon. Members of the R epublic an-dominate d caucus are embarking on a statewide tour to find out what the state’s citizenry thinks is needed in transportation and is willing to do and pay to get it done. Dates and locations for the meetings could be released as early as today. “We want to find out by region where people are at,” said Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, a co-chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday. “We want to get a feel from the public if this is the time to do it.” If what they hear can be translated quickly into a plan, negotiations with Democrats could commence this fall. Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Medina, one of two

Constantine, parks levy earn wins in primary election By Reporter Staff

King County Executive and the King County Parks levy both recorded wins on Tuesday, Aug. 6 in the primary election. Constantine, running for reelection in the King County Executive race, earned 76.02 percent of the vote, while Alan Lobdell came in second with 12.15 percent. The two will face off in November on the general election ballot. The King County Parks levy also passed, earning 69.44 percent of the vote, while 30.56 percent said no. The levy will help pay for maintenance and operations of all King County parks, trails, habitats and water quality, as well as the Woodland Park Zoo. The new levy will replace another which is about to expire, and raises rates by 40 precent. As of Thursday, Aug. 8 313,503 of the 373,290 received ballots had been counted in the county. A total of 1.187 million people are registered to vote. According to the Secretary of State, roughly 23.07 percent of registered voters voted in Washington’s primary. In King County the percentage was about the same as

the state average, with 23.54 percent of registered voters taking part. The primary election will be certified on Aug. 20. The general election is set for Tuesday, Nov. 6. On the general election ballot, Islanders will vote for King County Sheriff, City Council and School Board. Sheriff John Urquhart is running unopposed, while Kevin Scheid and Dan Grausz are running for City Council Position No. 2. Tana Senn is running unopposed for Council Position No. 4. Rich Erwin and Benson Wong are running

Democrats in the coalition caucus, has said if an agreement is within reach when lawmakers are in Olympia for committee meetings Nov. 21, it could get acted on then in a quick special session. “It’s possible. Personally, I think that is a ‘Hail Mary’ comment,” King said. “There are a lot of things that have to come together before that comes together.” One of those “things” is certain to be reform of some state transportation policies. House and Senate Republicans are convinced Washington over-designs, over-regulates and overpays for just about everything it builds and paves. Democrats aren’t convinced it’s quite as bad as their GOP friends make it sound but many of them see room for reform. Lawmakers have begun work on a study of those factors which drive up the cost of projects and what if anything can be done about them.

He and Clibborn met for an hour Tuesday after which she sounded confident the GOP will put forth a proposal before the year is out. “My gut tells me they will,” she said. “They talk about it in a positive way. They

are saying they want to do something. They realize it’s important to the state.” King made clear his caucus isn’t trying to claim ownership of the issue. “We just want to show we’re not the obstacles,” he said. Country Village Day School students visit MI Saddle Club By Jennifer Flick

For 11 kids, Wednesday, Aug. 7 will be remembered as the first time they rode a horse. On Wednesday, the Mercer Island Saddle Club hosted a day camp themed ‘Home on the Range’ where nearly a dozen 6-8 year-olds from the Country Village Day School participated in the various equine activities throughout the day. The campers learned about horse safety, how to groom and tack, and had a chance to experience a bona fide horseback ride around the arena. The students were assist-

ed by four Junior Riders from the Saddle Club, and had the guidance of trainer Jacqueline ‘JJ’ Jacobi. Mercer Island Saddle Club horses Peanut, Harley and Tess served as noble steeds in the day’s activities. The Junior riders all live on Mercer Island and are in either middle school or high school. Those helping at the camp included: Lindsey Reitinger, Caroline Boissonault, Ella Loesser and Maura Redmond. eeping guns out of the hands of those who might harm others is a goal of those on either side of the national discussion on guns. There are those who oppose any further restrictions on gun ownership on one hand and on the other, those who want more control. The arguments of both sides are well-known. But our aim in this column is praise the use of the process — no matter what your position — of going about implementing your beliefs using our democratic process. The Island-based Moms Demand Action did what our democracy gives us the right to do — to gather, speak up and ask others to join with them to implement change. They saw a need to help set in motion changes to laws that they feel do not adequately protect their families and others who might find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. They got organized, did their homework, and found a place where they could talk to many people at once. They got the permit they needed to gather in the park from the city. There they set about talking to other voters and gathering signatures in order to place the initiative, I-594, that would require background checks for (nearly) all gun sales, on the November General Election ballot. Sure, there were a few hiccups along the way. There was a fuss about names of city council people mentioned erroneously as being supportive or involved in the process that had to be dealt with, and perhaps the timing of the event was not the best for the Island’s National Night Out (NNO) event. Yet kudos to the ‘Mom’s’ for using the process we profess daily to celebrate; the right to gather and petition for change. NNO is a city-wide event for Islanders to get to know their neighbors and talk the nuts and bolts of emergency preparedness in their ‘hood. It is an event that is growing in size every year. The event adds to a sense of safety and security for Islanders. If you know your neighbor and they know you, everyone is more likely to look out for each other — and ask questions if something looks out of place next door or down the block. It is, might we say — a perfect complement to working toward gun safety.

Ironically, the burden of those costs on employers is magnified in times of high unemployment, and they continue to weigh heavily on employers, even as the economy slowly recovers. Our state’s top manufacturer, The Boeing Company, is dealing with many of those same issues. The Seattle Times reports that, while Boeing is optimistic about the future of its 787 program, which is headquartered in the Puget Sound region, the company’s need to reduce costs is hampering job growth in Washington. The Mercer Island Police Department (MIPD) issues, on average, eight or nine traffic tickets per day, according to Public Information Officer Leslie Burns. “We work areas with traffic flow problems and stop more people for speeding than any other traffic offense,” Burns said. Officers choose where

they work traffic based on reported complaints, the number of collisions in a given area and officer observations. “West Mercer Way and North Mercer Way, especially when there’s Mariner evening traffic, are both busy roads, so officers usually work these areas more heavily. All of Island Crest Way, particularly the 3200 block, where drivers are getting off and on the freeway, is also where officers like

hasn’t decreased the number of tickets issued on Mercer Island. “Waze is a good tool to use when trying to avoid a ticket,” Burns said, “but there are also other ways to predict where police are enforcing traffic. Officers have their favorite places to work. If people are attentive when they drive and see police at certain spots, they can avoid these spots and lessen their chances of receiving a ticket.” With 32 commissioned officers, including the chief, the MIPD is considered a medium-sized department. There are three 8-hour shifts each day, and three officers are on duty each shift. Officers are expected to respond to calls for service, enforce traffic, and write case reports while on duty.

Fred and Janet were devoted to each other, and left this life as they had lived the last 57 years: together. Fred was from West Peabody, Massachusetts and Janet, from Long Beach, California. He was 80 and she was 77 when they passed away on Saturday August 3, 2013. They met at a dance in California while Fred was in the Navy, and was playing in the band. She was 19 and he was 22, and they married soon afterward.They had daughter Paula and son Jeff while living in college housing, while Fred was attending San Diego State University. This was a very happy time in their lives. In 1963 they moved to the Seattle area, following Fred’s job, and settled on Mercer Island. Son John was born in 1966 in Bellevue. Fred had a degree in music, but worked most of his life in photography. He was a multi-talented man, able to play several instruments, and with a beautiful singing voice. In the 1960’s he played upright bass with a jazz combo in San Diego. In his youth he was also a talented dancer, in both ballet and tap. In later life he became a skilled carpenter, and was an amazing allaround fix-it man, who only needed duct tape and some wire to get something working again. Janet was self-educated, a voracious reader, and keenly intelligent. She was a wonderful cook, and skilled gardener. In their early years of marriage, she was amazingly creative in turning thrift store finds into treasured pieces for the home. She was a talented writer, and had a humorous piece printed in the “Pacific” (Seattle Times) about the travails of a San Diego girl living in rainy Seattle. They were independent thinkers, and fearless when it came to delving into unchartered territory.They had a house framed up on Mercer Island, and then finished it entirely themselves. They also took a foray into the restaurant business, opening a sandwich shop, which led to operating booths at the Evergreen and Yakima fairs for several years. Janet loved the ocean, and summer camping trips to Kalaloch are warm memories for the kids. Fred would be up early brewing his beloved coffee on the Coleman stove in the fresh ocean air. Elsie Vander Houwen died Thursday August 1, a week after celebrating her 102nd birthday. She was born Elsie W. Lanfear in Thornbury, England, on July 23, 1911, and came to Canada and then the United States with her parents. She moved to Mercer Island in 2001 to be closer to her son Boyd and his family and quickly became part of their circle of friends from multiple generations. She lived at Island House Retirement Community where she was a passionate player of the word game UPWORDS and enjoyed getting to know people from around the world. Most recently she lived at Patriot’s Glenn Assisted Living in Bellevue. She loved gardening and quickly transformed Boyd and Loma’s yard with a blaze of flower varieties and colors from boxes of bulbs that arrived ready for planting every spring. Her love for colors carried over to her wardrobe which remained bright and colorful throughout her life. Her family was always at the center of her life and she got special joy when her youngest great grandchildren Elsie Lee Vander Houwen, 3, and Violet June Guy, 2, were born. She also enjoyed spending time with granddaughters Karry and Kelly and their children, including a special trip to Australia and New Zealand. She was fiercely independent and remained interested in sports, politics and business even as she became increasingly frail, insisting on filling out the August primary election ballot days before her death. Prior to moving to Mercer Island she worked as a legal secretary in Everett, and lived in Yakima where she was the business manager and bookkeeper for the family orchard she built and operated with her husband of 55 years, John. She was a founding member of the Terrace Heights Garden Club and the Yakima Valley Arboretum, and active in school and community organizations. Survivors include her son Boyd (Loma) of Seattle, grandson Garth (Olivia) and great granddaughter Elsie Lee of Maple Leaf, granddaughter Dana Guy (Michael) and great granddaughter Violet June of West Seattle, and granddaughter Karry Blodgette and great grandson Grant of Depoe Bay, Oregon. She is also survived by granddaughter Kelly Wigin (David) and great granddaughters Zoe and Aleena West and great grandson Adyn West of Ridgefield, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband John in 1989, and her beloved son Kirby who died of a brain tumor in 2005. There will not be a memorial service, though a celebration of her full life is planned. Ashes will be taken to Yakima where she will be buried next to her husband in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Many free smartphone apps, like Waze, a community-generated social driving app, have a large following that not only report police sightings, but also alert other drivers when there are severe weather alerts, accidents, traffic jams, and road closures. The victim, a 78-year-old Mercer Island man reported that two of his unlocked vehicles in his carport had been entered, and that $10 in cash, a set of keys, and his Trek bike were stolen. An old bike was left on the property and is currently being investigated as evidence.

SR-520 tolling delay cost state $40 million Vendor tolling system fell months behind schedule By Reporter Staff

The state lost $40 million from tolling the SR 520 bridge because the allelectronic system was nine months behind schedule, according to an Aug. 2 state Auditor's report. In addition, project delays and issues creating the new system caused public confusion. On the plus side, the report noted that the state has collected $67 million through March 2013. Specifically, the report said the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) faced challenges managing a complicated project that involved collaboration across the department, where roles and responsibilities were unclear, including who made decisions, who was accountable, and how the vendor was to be managed.

While the Washington State Department of Transportation has taken some steps to address the issues, the report notes the importance of resolving the challenges since the Legislature has authorized tolling on SR 99, I-405, and the I-5 Columbia River

The report also said that while WSDOT wanted a statewide system that would be easy for customers to use on multiple highways and bridges, the need to track tolls at each facility went beyond what was used by other state. A complication was that the vendor didn't understand the accounting needs until several months into the project. The state also was working under a tight deadline in order to avoid loos-

ing a Federal Highway Administration grant to pay for the new tolling system. Finally, because WSDOT’s primary goal was to have an operational system, it delayed assessing damages and did not apply all available financial penalties for poor performance by the vendor, the report says. However, once tolls started being collected on SR 520, WSDOT reached a financial settlement with the vendor.

True Value continues to maintain its decades-old presence on Mercer Island in its new location next to Walgreens. “Now that we’re here in the center of town, we get a lot of walk-ins and people who come to Walgreens,” said Tom Valentine, a new store manager. “Everybody on the Island has been very patient and kind, and

The City of Mercer Island is currently working to replace all of the streetlights in the Town Center area, putting in new energy efficient LED lamps. All 228 lights are being replaced, putting in the new lights from the old 100watt metal halide lamps. The first phase of the project is expected to cost around $34,000. Part of the money is coming from a conservation grant from Puget Sound Energy for 50 percent of the total cost. Based on PSE's calculations, the change will save the city over $8,000. LED lamps last up to three or four times as long as the traditional halide lights.

Construction to begin on ICW multi-use trail The City of Mercer Island has begun construction work on a new multiuse trail along Island Crest Way. Due to the construction work, sections of the trail may be closed for brief periods of time, and there may be some traffic delays. Timebanking workshop Aug. 28 Mercer Island launched a timebank last May and this summer will host a followup meetings for interested residents to learn more about the program. Timbanking is a system in which people exchange services without using money. For every hour a resident in the program spends doing a task for someone else, they earn a credit, which can be exchanged for someone else doing something for you. Residents who are interested in joining the program

Three ‘terrible’ market days Did you see this on the news? We were amused earlier this week when a commentator on a daily stock market program declared in horror that the stock market had been down three days in a row……Three days in a row!! Wow…... like it was the beginning of Finance the apocalypse….or was it the beginning of a new, dreaded market correction? Bob Toomey Y o u know as well as I do that three days of a trend in the markets really doesn’t mean much. But it sounded so “daunting”. It perpetuates the “fear factor” and creates confusion. But, financial media know this is what keeps people watching and, of course, sells commercials. Let’s look at what’s really happening. As bull stock markets go, the current

one, which began in March 2009, has been pretty average or “normal”. There have been five corrections (market pullback) since March 2009 that have averaged about 13% and have lasted about 3.5 months. This is very much in line with the long-term averages. Corrections are normal and are healthy for the markets because they curb excesses and help maintain balance. Granted, there have been some legitimate concerns lately about the potential for a correction based on a change in Federal Reserve policy and renewed debate over Federal debt ceiling. One thing we do know absolutely is that the market will correct again at some point. But we also know that the market has rebounded from every correction and bear market and that general stock market fundamentals

remain sound. So should you fear the coming correction or lay awake worrying about it? One of the best ways to protect an investment portfolio from inevitable pullbacks is through appropriate asset allocation and reasoned sector exposure. Holding multiple asset classes can help lower portfolio volatility and moderate losses in a correction. Reducing exposures to stocks and sectors that have performed extremely well is another way in which investors can mitigate the impact of a potential correction. The advice we give to clients is to develop a sound investment strategy or financial plan and stick to that strategy throughout the market vicissitudes. Day care buddies become day care business partners By Jennifer Flick

From the age of three, best friends Alli Drinkard and Jessica Dixon were on a mission. Since meeting at a Mercer Island home nursery school, the two tykes have been confident that they would grow up to be ‘Daycare Ladies’ together. Fast forward about twenty years, and it is clear their prediction was surprisingly on point. Their childhood dream has more than stood the test of time. The two are now partners in a home daycare named “The Growing Tree.” “We had such a wonderful experience that we’ve always been motivated to start our own home daycare,” Drinkard said. Growing up together on Mercer Island, the entrepreneurs both attended Mercer Island High School. Drinkard and Dixon participated in the drill team and cheer squad, respectively, and both joined the National Charity League, the SAVE project (Students Against Violence Everywhere), as well as Island Chorale Experience 17th Annual

Especially as an only child, to be able to make friends that became a part of my family, was very important to me,” Dixon said. The ‘Daycare Ladies’ now aim to provide a similar experience for children at The Growing Tree. “We want to give these children a home away from home, where they feel loved and special.” The Growing Tree will cater to infants and children up to 5 years of age, Drinkard and Dixon said they will focus on in fostering self-confidence, individuality, and positive relationships between students. Their daycare will emphasize one-on-one interaction with students, ensure stability and an engaging learning environment. Located in Bellevue, The Growing Tree is a playbased preschool, offering daily lesson plans, arts and crafts, as well as recreational activities such as singing and dancing.

Multimedia artist says Island life encouraged creativity By Jennifer Flick

Mixed-media artist and Mercer Island native Mark Berry is on a mission to share his creative talent with the world. Born in Seattle and raised on the Island, this veteran of the artistic world brings lessons learned in his youth to realization in his work now. Showcasing a broad range of media and exhibiting ease with each vehicle, Berry employs photo g r a phy, filmmaking, video, and paint in his pieces, frequently combining them. “I’m definitely not limited to one media source,” Berry says. An important pillar of Berry’s artistic identity was his upbringing on Mercer Island. Raised in a family that encouraged creativity,

Berry started exploring the arts at a young age. “I always had a pencil or paintbrush in my hand. My parents are both artistic. I’ve had incredible support from my parents, from teachers, from friends at school,” he said. Berry notes the impact of the picturesque landscape of the South end of the Island as a setting during his formative years. ‘It was a great place to grow up. Lots of woods, lots of water.’ Having Mark Berry artist a t t e n d e d Lakeview Elementary, South Mercer Junior High, and Mercer Island High School, it is clear that teachers indeed had a hand in guiding Berry’s path. “In high school, Mrs. Patton was one of my art teachers. Senior year, I was taking three art classes. A

large part of the classroom was like my own studio. I had pretty much taken over the whole back part,” he said. Recalling a specific incident from his high school years, Berry says that Mrs. Patton even suggested having his parents reimburse the school due to the amount of paper Berry was using. At a young age, Berry began entering his work in shows, exhibitions and competitions, which he believes pushed him as an artist. One of his favorite teachers, Mr. Haugland, encouraged him at a young age to ‘practice, practice, practice,’ advice that has stuck with him through the years, and which he considers to be applicable in all areas of life. “I believe creativity and talent are God-given. I want to use my talent and abilities, I don’t want to bury them, I want to share them. My inspiration is that truth and beauty exist, life is fleet-

tion. The watercolor piece was selected by Laurence Bradshaw, Professor of art at the University of Nebraska, who served as juror for the contest. Professor Bradshaw maintained that Akrish "has a delightful, investigative approach with watercolor as seen in her refreshing piece 'Enchanting Gardens'. The visual portrayal of the people in the colorful scene is light and airy."

It wasn’t long after Mercer Island High School boys soccer head coach Steve Newman died that his family and Mercer Island friends wanted to do something in his name. The long time coach, who died last October, was an icon on the field for the boys soccer team and was well known for his traveling in the off-season. In the spirit of soccer and traversing the world, the Steve Newman Spirit Award was created. Each spring, one member of the high school boys team would earn the honor, getting to travel to a soccer game somewhere in the world. Last spring, senior captain Nate Um l a u f earned the award and a trip of a lifetime. His trip included visiting FC Dallas, staying with the head coach and getting a behind the scenes look at the Concacaf Golf Cup. “When I flew into Dallas, Coach Schellas actually picked me up from the airport with his daughter, I was kind of surprised. I didn’t expect it to be him,” said Umlauf. Schellas Hyndman, the head coach of FC Dallas, opened his home to the player. Hyndman gave Umlauf full access to the club, and the recent high school graduate sat in on meetings, training sessions and got a chance to hang out with the players. “There were pretty much no restrictions, I was in the coaches office, I sat in on the coaches meeting and they talked about the plan

for the game, the training sessions,” said Umlauf. “It was almost like a job shadow of the head coach. It was pretty interesting to see how the MLS works. It was a lot more business oriented than I thought it would be. I guess I didn’t really think about it, but it’s all about the money. They don’t have as much money as the Sounders do, so they have to get the right player for the right price. If they have to move somebody, they have to go. The coach, he was the most generous guy I’ve ever met. He let me sit in on meetings and they were talking about transferring guys.” George John, a center back on the team in Dallas, is an old friend of current MIHS coach Colin Rigby. That friendship, plus other connections in the small world that is professional soccer, made the trip Nate Umlauf possible for Umlauf. Many of the players in Dallas speak Spanish as their first language, making some interactions with the team tricky for Umlauf. “I would hang out with the team in the locker room. Half of them don’t really speak English, but everyone was super nice, asking me how I was doing. They didn’t act like it was super weird, and I’m sure its not normal for a kid to be in the locker room,” he said. While Umlauf was in Dallas, the Concacaf Gold Cup semifinals were taking place in nearby Cowboys Stadium. The Golf Cup is the national team championship for the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association

As part of the trip, Umlauf attended the various teams press conferences, working with the public relations staff, handing microphones to reporters. “It was a long day, but it was very interesting,” he said. Because the whole trip was inspired by Umlauf ’s former coach, Newman was never far from his thoughts on the trip. “This is the first year they’ve had the Steve Newman award. Steve was all about coaching his team – when he wasn’t coaching or working, he’d find the cheapest plane ticket and just fly somewhere. He wouldn’t necessarily have a hotel or anything, just go there, eat the food, live with the locals and immerse himself in a new culture. So that was kind of the plan, and go to a soccer game, have a new experience which this definitely was,” said Umlauf. “It was pretty overwhelming when I first got it. I didn’t really know what to expect, as far as what I was going to be doing. I was really close with Steve and I played for him for three years. I think being the first year it was an honor, and its even more of an honor because I’m probably going to be the only player to get the award who knew Steve. His legacy will live on, but next year’s players won’t have ever played for Steve. I think that was definitely unique about me getting the award. It’s definitely a good way to keep his name alive.” Umlauf graduated from MIHS this spring and will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall. He plans to major in business and join the men’s club soccer team.

PREMIER SOCCER Eastside FC JR RCL Program U8-U9 Fall 2013 Objectives - Teach kids to have fun while playing the game of soccer! Provide high level, premier coaches who will teach the fundamentals of the game - Develop player’s skills, confidence, initiative and sense of teamwork - Promote and encourage the very highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play. Registration - Open on Friday, April 26 - Close on Monday, August 19 - Placement on a team is guaranteed up until the date of August 19. After this date, we will attempt to place every player, but teams may be full, so sign up early! Important Dates - The Fall season will run August 26 – November 10 - Practices will start the week of August 26. - Games will start the weekend of September 7/8 Training will be two times per week: Wed/ Fri OR Tues/Thur - Training time for all Jr teams will be 4:15pm – 5:30pm - There will be 10 games total: Girls will play Saturday. Boys will play Sunday.

Practice will start the last week in August on Monday, August 26th. Mercer Island Option - We will offer Mercer Island based players the opportunity to train/practice on Mercer Island. Please indicate your preference in registration. Games - The game format will be 6 a side, with each match having 25 minute halves. Girls will play Saturday and boys on Sunday. The season will be 10 games long. Games will be hosted between EFC at Preston on our Mod Fields, and Crossfire Premier at their facilities. Cost - $550 for new participants (includes cost of uniform) $500 for returning participants (without uniform).

Teams & Coaching - There is not a tryout process for the Jr Program. Teams will first be $550 covers all costs associated with league fees, fields, referees, formed by age then randomly to complete uniform and coaching fee. The uniform kit for the player to keep rosters. Practice night preferences, friend, consists of two shirts, one short, and two pairs of socks.

Mercer Island boys soccer team hosts summer camp The Mercer Island High School boys soccer team just wrapped up hosting it's second soccer camp of the summer for Mercer Island players. Members of the high school team helped coached the younger players in June and July, which helps support the growth of soccer on the Island, as well as getting Islanders more involved with the high school soccer programs. "We are very proud to represent the high school," said boys head coach Colin Rigby. The camps were held at the high school's soccer field.

The Mercer Island Soccer Club’s Select boys U11 team made it to the finals of the Crossfire Select tournament at the end of July. The camp will return in it's second year with a more developed summer program. Ultimate frisbee is one of the fastest growing team sports in the country. At the camp, students will learn the skills and tactics of the game from high school and college players. The camp is open to players of all skill levels and ages

Islanders compete at Junior US Open Judo Championships Two student athletes from Mercer Island recently traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for the Junior U.S. Open Judo Championships at the end of July.

Ben Berejka, Tiger McBurney, Bernie Agress and Cameron Wittman, all from Mercer Island, played on the Rising Sophomore (Cohos) made up players from the greater Eastside. Taylan Yuasa, a junior at Mercer Island High School, and younger brother Tegan Yuasa, a fifth grader at West Mercer Elementary both competed in the tournament and are members of the Budokan Judo Club in Seattle. Taylan Yuasa, a brown belt, finished in second place in the juvenile B 50 kilogram division. A brown belt, he beat a student from South Africa in the quarterfinals, and another from southern Florida in the semifinals. Taylan Yuasa lost to Brian Abreu in the finals. In the IJF -55 kilogram division, Taylan Yuasa finished in third place, beating a student from southern

Florida. He had a 32-1 record this season and took first place in both the Washington State championships and the middle-high school state championships. Tegan Yuasa finished in first place in the intermediate 2 division age 10-11 28 kilogram division. He also finished in third place in the Gold Score Tournament's 34 kilogram division. The U.S. Open Championships bring together over 20 countries, from South American to Europe. There were more than 650 participants in the Junior Open and 300 in the Golden Score tournament.

The Mercer Island Youth Soccer Club select U11 boys team recently played in the gold division at the Crossfire Select Cup tournament at the end of July. The team made it to the finals of the tournament in their division. In their first year playing in the select division, the team faced off against Cascade FC in the tournament finals, falling 1-0. The Crossfire Select tournament brings together 60 of the top Crossfire teams in the region, playing the tournament in Redmond.

Lacrosse players help Team Washington to tournament wins Several Mercer Island lacrosse players have spent the summer playing with Team Washington, a group of high school lacrosse players from around the state. The Rising Sophomore team, called the Cohos, won several tournaments. Mercer Islanders on the team included: Ben Berejka, Tiger McBurney, Bernie Agress and Cameron Wittman. The team won at a big Tri-state tournament in New Jersey, finishing the event with an 8-0 record over three days. The next week, the team went 6-1 at Champ Camp Challenge, a tournament in Baltimore, where they won the tournament title. They played against teams from Long Island, upstate New York, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Florida, Oregon and California. The team is made up of players from Bellevue, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Bainbridge Island, Eastlake, Northshore and Lake Washington school districts.
