Incumbent Neil Johnson has taken a strong lead in the primary election for Bonney Lake mayor. Ballots were due Aug. 6 for the primary election determining which two candidates would move on to the November general election. The primary results will be considered fully counted and certified Aug. 20. As of Aug. 9, the most recent tally available by press time, Johnson held a 57.64 percent share of the total 2,021 votes counted. Councilman James Rackley was in second place with 23.5 percent of votes.

The four-year walk across America By Dennis Box Editor

Many walk for exercise or simply to get somewhere. But few who walk find it to truly be an experience or transformation. That, however, is the story of Rob Reynolds’ walk around America. Reynolds, 86, told the story of his walking mission recently at Enumclaw’s Highpoint Village, where he is living. His walk began Jan. 8, 1995, and ended in 1999, spanning four years, seven months and 26 days. He was 68 when he began his walk around America. The story originated in Idaho

where Rob was born and raised. He heard about a group known as Mission Aviation Fellowship, a Christian organization that traces its history to 1943 when World War II pilots met for prayer. According to its website, the organization was launched after the war, using planes to provide services and spread Christianity to remote areas of the world. Rob heard the group was training pilots in Idaho near where he was raised. He was inspired by their mission and came up with the idea to help the fellowship by raising both

Tehaleh bestselling Sound community, report says By Daniel Nash Staff Writer

The Tehaleh planned community has become the No. 1 homeseller in the Puget Sound region, according to a report from New Home Trends, a local real estate research firm. The report reviewed new home sales in 499

Pierce, King, Snohomish and Thurston county communities for the first six months of 2013. As of late July, Newland Communities had sold 142 homes in Tehaleh. “We track the numbers pretty closely, so we knew we were up there but we didn’t know we were number one until that report

was published,” Vice President Scott Jones said. Tehaleh is a planned community immediately south of Bonney Lake, still in its early stages of construction. The site formerly known as Cascadia was originally owned by the Cascadia Development Corporation, and the company’s plans for a “self-

contained” community of homes and businesses remained in the works for nearly 20 years. However, the developers defaulted on a $75 million loan debt and HomeStreet Bank foreclosed in 2009. The bank sold the real estate to Newland in 2011 and the first phase of development opened to the public in fall

2012. A grand opening contest saw Newland award a South Hill man, Jay Bradley, win a $280,000 homebuilding credit. In the past year, the San Diego land developer has campaigned to promote its east Pierce County venture as an opportunity for renters to become owners, according to Marketing

Director Ruth Winbauer. Buyers who closed on a home before August 16 were offered a year without homeowners association dues. So far, Jones said Tehaleh has attracted a little bit of everyone: young families, established families

During the summer of 1998 it took seven steroid injections to get him across Montana. “It was too painful to walk every day,” Rob said. “One day after one mile I sat on the guard rail and hoped Marge would come back for me.”

came at Waveland State Park in Mississippi when Marge tripped on a curb and badly skinned her knee. Rob said she tried to treat it at the trailer, but had an allergic reaction to the medication. She was unconscious and not breathing and Rob preformed CPR until emergency medical help arrived. Later, Marge was diagnosed with pneumonia. They stayed put for a month while she recovered and gained back the strength needed to carry on

Rob met with Max Meyers, executive director of the fellowship, and was told, “If you are crazy enough to do it, we are crazy enough to back you.” Living in Washington, Rob began his journey on state Route 101. He and his wife, Marge, who drove a pickup and pulled a trailer, planned on covering about 20 miles a day. Planning to begin with a trip down the West Coast, Rob discovered 20 miles was too far and cut back to an average of 16 miles a day. “That winter was a particular trial,” Reynolds said, because of storms. The couple finally arrived in San Diego at the end of May 1995. He was advised against crossing the Southwest states during the summer months because of the extreme heat. Reynolds decided to drive to Maine and walk down the East Coast. The daily routine had Marge driving ahead of her husband, then walking back to meet Rob and walk for a mile or more. She would then drive ahead

once more, but keep close tabs on Rob in case a problem arose. They kept this routine Tuesday through Saturday. The couple would find a local church on Sunday to attend, then move their fifth-wheel trailer to the next location Monday. “I had a one-person support team – my wife,” Rob said.”She wanted to do it for the Lord and help my dream come true.” Rob said they met many challenges along the way. One was in The Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs. “She (Marge) followed me as I walked through Bronx and across the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey,” Rob said. “I walked into Fort Lee (New Jersey) and I lost her. The only way to contact her was to find a place to call the cell phone she had in the car.” They finally found each other several hours later. “She was very mad and ready to quit,” Rob said. “But we managed to keep going.” Rob said the big eastern cities were the toughest, but the majority of the experience was, “wonderful… people were very helpful and thoughtful.” The most difficult time

No one knows a mother’s heart, not even another mother. They may empathize with one another; perhaps even believe they know the other’s heart. It cannot be, as each mother is alone with herself, with her child as it is born. Each life has its own pathway, its own emotions, sorrows and joys. Each child nestled under the mother’s heart waiting to be born learns his/her mother in his/her own way. Yet, the child will never know the mother’s heart. Mothers have a special spot carved for each life she has carried cradled within her very own self. Some children may form a stronger outward bond, but all have their own inward bond that none can invade or destroy. A mother’s sorrows, pains, regrets and joys settle into the designated spot as the years pass by, as each child grows into maturity. Nothing erases the moment of first seeing the tiny child, counting the fingers and toes, holding the warmth close outside while the inside gives up the pain of departure. Oh yes! A mother’s heart! There is no other that compares. No other individual can know the closeness formed from within that of necessity pushes forth into the world to go forth into separation.

Police Blotter BREAK-IN: At 9 a.m. July 28, a woman reported a theft from her car parked near the Ben Franklin craft store. While working in a nearby espresso stand, she was informed by a customer that a car parked outside had a broken window. She found her window smashed in, apparently by a large rock sitting inside the vehicle. The only item reported missing was a gym bag containing affects of little or no value. As the vehicle had been moved since the theft, the officer photographed the area where it had been parked during the break-in and the vehicle itself. The photos were placed into evidence. MIP: At 6:35 p.m. July 28, two officers responded to McGhee Drive East to check on the welfare of a 14-yearold male who was “out of it or sleeping,” according to a caller. Police found the boy laying on a set of steps in a home’s yard. After confirming he was still breathing, an officer shook his foot to rouse him. His eyes were bloodshot and he appeared dazed. While questioning where the boy had come from and how much he had slept, the officer smelled a faint odor of alcohol on his breath. He asked the boy how much he had to drink,

Police contacted the boy’s mother, who urged him to cooperate with a breath test. The breath sample read above the legal limit for minors. Police advised the mother that the report and requested charges for minor in possession would be forwarded to Remann Hall. SHOPLIFT: At 4:42 p.m. July 31, an officer was dispatched to the state Route 410 liquor store to take a report on a shoplifting incident that had occurred 10 days prior. An employee said two suspects driving a blue Dodge Caravan had come in the store July 21. One of the suspects was wheelchair bound. A third person may have been present to distract the worker on duty. Video of the incident showed the male suspect pushing the female subject in her wheelchair before they separated. The woman selected three bottles of Crown Royal whisky and placed them under herself in the wheelchair. They then exited the store without making a purchase. Staff did not call on the day of the incident because the loss was not more than $600, however the employee decided to call because the suspects had attempted to come into the store again. GROW OP: On August 2, a

tipster reported to police she believed a 75th Street East home was being used as a grow house. The occupants of the town home had recently cut a hole in the exterior wall of its garage and installed a dryer vent. An odor of marijuana could be smelled from the vent. The officer taking the report explained that recent changes to medicinal marijuana laws could limit law enforcement’s ability to take action, but that civil action could also be pursued if the operation created code enforcement issues or if it violated neighborhood bylaws. At 2:32 p.m., the officer drove by the address to attempt to verify if the vent was visible from the driveway. It was, and the scent of possibly under-watered or drying marijuana was apparent while the patrol car’s windows were rolled down. The officer contacted a male occupant of the residence at the front door and told him about the smell. He appeared nervous but agreed to speak outside; with the man’s cooperation, a legal loaded firearm was removed from his person without incident, unloaded and temporarily confiscated until contact was complete. The man had current paperwork allowing him to possess and grow medicinal marijuana. The officer informed the man dispensaries and collective gardens — grows set up for distribution to multiple patients — were

not allowed in the city of Bonney Lake. But due to recent new laws, the officer was not interested in making an arrest or seizing property at that time, only in viewing the operation to document it and have city personnel help determine how to proceed. The man asked to contact someone by phone and, after a brief call, said he would not give permission to enter the residence. He was briefly detained in handcuffs while a call could be placed to the city attorney. The attorney advised the officer to release the man and forward the case information for possible future charges. ARSON: At 4 a.m. August 3, an officer was dispatched to Bonney Lake Boulevard East, where a caller reported a mailbox destroyed by an explosive. The caller had heard the blast from his porch and ran up the street to find a neighbor’s mailbox destroyed. He observed a small red two-door car driving westbound from the scene. The officer contacted the homeowner, who said he had been asleep when he was awakened by the blast. Pieces of the mailbox were found at least 150 feet away from the site of the explosion. The odor of gunpowder was apparent in the air. An area check did not yield the suspect vehicle. STALKING: On August 4, a woman reported she was being stalked. The caller, an employee of a state Route

SUSPICIOUS: At 9:16 p.m. August 6, two officers were dispatched to 192nd Avenue East, where a homeowner had detained a man found wandering in his backyard. The homeowner said he and his family had just returned home when they found the man. He gave chase down the street and eventually got the man to stop running. The man explained he was running from drug dealers to whom he owed money. During their exchange, a light green Kia Sport containing a white male and a possibly Samoan male drove up to the scene. The Samoan male said the running man was their friend and they wanted to talk with him. The homeowner told them the police were on their way. The Samoan male appeared upset, but the car left the area and drove toward the highway. The license plate was registered to a Buckley man and officers contacted Buckley Police to follow up. Police arranged for an associate of the running man to pick him up nearby. The running man told police he owed the alleged drug dealers $150 for heroin. He had not been assaulted, but he believed he was going to be. The man was found to have unused heroin paraphernalia, but no drugs on his person.

It did not contain any direct threats, but demonstrated at least some knowledge of the woman’s routine. The envelope, addressed to her workplace, did not have a return address and was stamped at an Olympia mailing station. The woman said she had been approached or asked for her number by customers in the past, but she did not suspect a particular person. The officer provided some tips for the woman to safeguard her welfare in the near future, and advised her to contact police about any further attempted communications or suspicious circumstances. The letter and envelope were submitted into evidence. RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT: At 1:30 p.m. August 6, a caller reported damage to his commercial truck. An employee was driving the truck over the Angeline Road overpass of state Route 410 when a rock came through the windshield and hit him in the shoulder. The rock was more than three inches in diameter and came through with such force that the man initially believed he had been shot. He was not sure where the rock came from but be-

Daily acquisitions and bed sheets Those in the newspaper world are collectively wringing their hands and tearing their hair over the sale of a couple of East Coast dailies, the impact of the Internet, revenue and other garbled gerunds. In the office a couple of us were reading a release from the CEO of a national online media outlet that used a string of mangled and malignant clauses to describe something; I was never sure what, but I suspect he was laying off a pile of people — of course, in a proud and Dennis Box positive way. He Editor sprinkled in a few references to the happy future, models and commitment, which really means no future, stupid plastic models that don’t fit together and I want more money for my commitment to nothing. CEOs should try playground rules occasionally. Say what you mean or we take your marbles. One would think an industry that is supposed to be about communications would occasionally try that — communicate. Every time someone from the media business predicts the future I get a headache and run for the buttermilk. It’s the only thing that cures me. However, there are much more important issues than

Fennel Creek is our city’s natural treasure Have you ever seen Victor Falls? Have you ever been to the mouth of Fennel Creek? Have you ever taught second graders about the trillium? Do you ever drink water from Fennel Creek aquifer? Do you like to walk or ride bikes? I was at the July 23 Council meeting when Councilman Donn Lewis respectfully reported that the previous evening he had attended the Bonney Lake Fennel Creek Habitat Team meeting at the Bonney Lake Library. The team is about maintenance of Fennel Creek from the headwaters all the way to where it joins the Puyallup River in a nature wise environment; basically, keeping it as much as possible environmentally sound ensure the waters are clean, running through with no disturbance. He said one of the opportunities for the city is the Fennel Creek Trail, Safe Routes to Schools as they call it. The first mile is under construction and should be open in one or one-anda-half months. Shortly it should be ready to go. Paving is done behind Victor Falls Elementary and is progressing down the hill and of course the bottom part is behind the subdivisions down near Angeline Road.

Lewis pointed out a lot of people don’t know Fennel Creek is the one that goes over Victor Falls. Many just think Victor Falls is the name of an elementary school; they don’t even know the falls are there. He shared this is an opportunity for the group to get the word out at their booth at Bonney Lake Days to educate people whether they are from the city or other areas. There will be maps, displays and kid friendly exercises to engage youth while their parents look at the bigger profile things. There will be great displays and a chance for us all to educate ourselves. We can benefit in the future from tourism. Victor Falls is not developed, but you can get to it if you are careful.

We get fresh water from our city well on Fennel Creek. It is very important we all know what it is. The high school is looking forward to the trail for jogging, exercises and PE classes, running up and down the hill. Lewis thinks as we get more exposure to the creek we are going to get more and more people interested in Fennel Creek. People will say “where does Fennel Creek go? Oh that’s over by Kelley Farm” or “oh that’s over by Eastown.” He said he is looking forward to future meetings. He lives near Fennel Creek behind Victor Falls Elementary. He has a desire to ensure that habitat is preserved as well as the park like atmosphere. He felt WSDOT did a good job by Kelley Farm near the creek reworking to prevent washout and creating stability that is a benefit to the City. The group is looking for new members so visit their booth at Bonney Lake Days and stay tuned. After listening to Councilman Lewis’ report I subsequently contacted Marian Betzer, who is the go to person about the Fennel Creek

Beer lovers have found a new home with the opening of NW Caps ‘n’ Taps in Bonney Lake. Owners Spencer Neff and David Monahan are all about quality brews and offer a large selection of bottled beer, from Northwest favorites to more exotic labels from around the world. In addition, there are 16 taps operating. The owners encourage repeat customers by frequently rotating the selection stocking some hard-to-find items. Visitors are tempted to linger, as Neff and Monahan allow guests to bring food into the shop or even have take-out orders delivered to the store. NW Caps ‘n’ Taps opened July 11 at 20840 state Route 410. Doors open at 10 a.m. seven days a week and remain open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. Rusty Plow Farm, owned and operated by Dave and Sue White, is offering a total blueberry experience in a close-to-town setting. Found at 23206 S.E. 448th St. in Enumclaw, the farm boasts 4,600 plants on a three-acre patch. This is just the second year the plants have been in the ground and the first year the Whites have been selling. As the plants grow and mature, harvests will increase. Most of the farm’s customers enjoy the you-pick experience, gathering their own berries into buckets that are provided. The White’s also sell berries by the pound at their farm stand. They recommend customers call ahead with orders so berries are ready to be picked up. Rusty Plow Farm offers five varieties of blueberries, ripening at different times of the growing season, perhaps into September. Included are some larger, tastier varieties that are best suited for handpicking. The Whites note their operational philosophy is to be sustainable and respectful to the land, so they use organic methods and products whenever possible. Rusty Plow Farm opened for picking on July 5 and is generally open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Because the plants are young, some days there is a “closed for ripening” sign out front. She said the new Fennel Creek Habitat Team is off to a good start thanks to interest and participation from Donn and Mary Lewis and others. Like Winona Jacobsen, who at that same council meeting spoke in favor of the Fennel Creek Trail portion of the six year transportation improvement plan. 2013 Victor Ceola Community Volunteer Award winners Judy Eagle and Victor Cissell were also in attendance, wearing t-shirts in support of the Fennel Creek Trail. Victor and Judy have welcomed many visitors to their home on Fennel Creek, from state senators to the Victor Falls second graders who visit annually in the spring to learn the impor-

tance of the watershed. The group is aligned with the National Wildlife Federation. Betzer indicated the group will be putting out a press release soon. Look for volunteer signup sheets at their booth at Bonney Lake Days. Remember when I talked in one of my first columns about bird counts in the WSU forest? Part of the beauty of Bonney Lake and the Fennel Creek corridor is the flora and fauna we share our homes with. Coexisting with nature and being eco-friendly is important. Turn your yard into a haven for wildlife by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young, your garden can join the more than 150,000 certified wildlife habitat sites across the country. I did this online at www.nwf. org. Then I gave a copy of my certificate to Marian Betzer to be part of the habitat team. To certify your yard, you need to provide the following: Food sources such as native

plants, seeds, fruits, nuts, berries and/or nectar. Water sources can be from a birdbath, pond, water garden and/or a stream like Fennel Creek. Cover examples are a thicket, roosting box, brush pile or mature trees. Providing places to raise young could be in dense shrubs, vegetation, nesting box, pond or the shores of Lake Bonney, Lake Debra Jane or Church Lake. Certification can be as little as about $25 up to a higher amount if you wish to get a sign for your yard. Why not consider registering your yard, print up an extra copy of the certificate and deliver it to Marian at the booth at Bonney Lake Days? Or at the very least, provide the habitat and be a good steward. The birds, bees, beetles and bats of Bonney Lake will thank you merely by their presence. And I cannot wait to walk on that new trail.

Skin cracks show tomatoes’ water shyness You can plant a second harvest this week by seeding a winter crop of kale, herbs, cabbage and carrots. The trick to harvesting vegetables all year long is to cover the soil with a shade cloth in the summer to keep it cool right after you plant your summer seed. For a winter harvest cover your crops with a hoop house or clear plastic tunnel in late fall to protect your salad greens from the cold. These row covers are called “season extenders” and in the mild winter climate of western Washington you can enjoy fresh grown vegetables almost all year long. Beheading your tomato vines is not necessary to speed ripening. The variety of tomato and the night temperatures get most of the credit for early ripening. Smallfruited tomatoes like Sweet 100 and yellow skinned or pear shaped tomatoes ripen sooner than large beefsteak varieties that require more hot nights to sweeten up and turn red. If your tomatoes are still green when a frost threatens in the fall you can harvest them early and store the green fruit indoors in a cool dry spot until the tomatoes turn red and ripen.

Welcome to Bonney Lake Days 2013

As your mayor, I have made it a priority that we provide a wide array of entertainment so that the community can come together and celebrate. Starting back in the 1990â€™s, Bonney Lake Days was a must attend event at the Market at Lake Tapps. Even though Bonney Lake Days took a break for a few years, the city council pushed for its revival in 2003 and now today we see this event growing better than ever, thanks to all involved. This year we will continue featuring a number of local businesses, clubs and booths full of information. Beatniks play Tunes @ Tapps Wednesday By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer

Northwest band The Beatniks — with Bonney Lake police officer Daron Wolschleger on percussion, vocals and drums — will play Tunes @ Tapps for the fourth consecutive year. To witness the growth of Tunes @ Tapps has been exciting, Wolschleger remarked. The summer concert series

began seven years ago, with four shows a year and crowds of approximately 50 people. This year, the series has consistently drawn an estimated 900 attendees each week, according to Special Events Coordinator David Wells. Attendance reached over 2,500 at the Spike and the Impalers show, he said. The addition of a farmer’s style market with food and craft vendors has also boost-

ed the Wednesday night entertainment. “The city has turned Tunes @ Tapps into a top quality concert in the park series,” he said. “It’s been great to watch the momentum it’s gained recently. Of all the shows we play each year, it’s definitely become one of our favorites.” The market opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday and The Beatniks are scheduled to take the stage at 6:30 with an

energetic and passionate mix of songs from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
