SJCC project underway for new auditorium $5 million for construction of new state-of-the-art facility on Mercer Island By Mary L. Grady

Remodeling is probably not the right word for the $5 million construction project focused on a complete rehabilitation of the existing theater/auditorium and adjacent public space within the heart of the Stroum Jewish Community Center on East Mercer Way. Reinvention or renewal just might be a better way to describe it and the changes that lie ahead for the center. SJCC CEO Judy Neuman calls it a transformation for the facility that will lead it to becoming
an even more essential element for Jewish life here and the larger community it serves. Over the past many months the SJCC leadership has met to sharpen its view of the future for the institution based on its underlying values and the desires of its members. The last capital campaign for remodeling the center was in the mid-1990s. Most important in these discussions was the focus on the cultural aspects of Jewish life, Neuman explained. “That is our overriding mission,” she said. “When we chose to focus on the auditorium and the adjacent public areas first, we had to look at how they fit in within our mission and values,” she explained. She pointed to the center’s mission
statement, “to create outstanding programs, partnerships and spaces that welcome everyone to learn, grow and celebrate Jewish life and culture. “And there were some relatively straightforward questions that we asked ourselves,” she continued. “What do our members want more of, and how do we accomplish those goals?” A new, flexible auditorium/theater with adjacent, expanded open spaces integrate both the center’s focus on Jewish culture and the desire to have a place for gatherings and celebrations for members and the larger community, she said. But the JCC is not just for those who are Jewish, she explained. “We serve as an outreach to the Jewish community for Jewish life and culture. We are very culturally based. But our membership includes a large share of families and individuals who are not Jewish,” she said. To set it all in motion, the board

The idea is to successfully bring this one to completion, then demonstrate its success — and that of the ‘J’ — then build on that success for the next phase.” The project is already well underway with a complete gutting of the existing theater/auditorium. The new space will have seating for 350 rather than 230 in the old configuration. The new seats can be easily folded away into a much smaller unit than before, freeing up floor space to be used for celebrations such as bar mitzvahs, weddings and the like. In addition, the old space was windowless and had dark coverings on the walls and seats. The plan calls for placing several skylights in the roof and windows along the north side, which can be covered with a touch of a button during performances and shows. Nearly 200 people can be seated at tables for plated dinners in the remodeled space. The existing stage will remain. The entire space will be rewired and reworked for a state-of-the-art digitized

really become a theater for the community, Neuman said. Neuman emphasizes that this is not a money-making enterprise. “Our first obligation is to our members, but we will want to share with others,” she said. But of course, as any property owner knows, upkeep is key. And to that point, the first order of business for the 92,000-square-foot building was to replace the roof at a cost of $600,000. At the present time, the SJCC is operating at
capacity, she said, pointing to the parade of children enrolled in summer activities marching through the hallways. “We have 12,000 visitors every year,” she said. “We have many needs to deal with.” And the ‘J’ is committed to sustainability, Neuman said. During the demolition, nearly everything is being recycled or repurposed. Even the auditorium seats are not being sent to a landfill. Parts and pieces of those are being reused.

They said not paying the COLA amounted to a cut in education spending, reviving a partisan argument voiced often during the protracted legislative session. “I absolutely think we don’t hide this COLA suspension in the closet,” said Sen. Christine Rolfes, D-Bainbridge Island. “I’d rather be honest and transparent about the salary issue.” Rep. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle, said it would be “really misleading” to say the Legislature put $1 billion more into basic education without subtracting the $295 million for the COLA that was cut. Rep. Gary Alexander, R-Olympia, one of the pan-

el’s two chairmen, objected to the Democrats’ request. He said the Legislature had suspended those increases in previous budgets so their action amounted to a continuation of that policy and not a cut. Meanwhile, Alexander said education reforms adopted by the Legislature should be emphasized as much as the dollars, because the court wants to see what the state is doing to improve the academic achievement of students. But Democrats pushed back. Pedersen said it was “certainly not my understanding or reading of McCleary” decision to give extra attention to those policies. This will be the Legislature’s second report to the Supreme Court. Justices criticized the first one submitted in September 2012, saying that it failed to demonstrate steady progress
in meeting the goals set out in the decision. The committee writing the report is made up of eight people. It is divided evenly among Democrats and Republicans in each chamber with each caucus providing two members. No Senate Republicans or members of the Majority Coalition Caucus attended Wednesday’s meeting. The committee is scheduled to meet again on Aug. 20.

t is good news that several new businesses have chosen to open on Mercer Island. More choices help everyone. More places to shop or eat means more people on the street. People headed to one business or restaurant might just check the one next door. More money spent on Mercer Island means a more vibrant community and more sales tax revenue to the city. Construction continues on The Mercer projects. A new hotel is being planned at 76th and the Sunset Highway. Just down the block is the new Legacy project with apartments and commercial space. But there is more. There are at least eight homes listed for sale here that are labeled as ‘new construction’ with more in the pipeline. Community institutions are being remodeled or reinvented, such as the Stroum Jewish Community Center, which will spend $5 million reinventing their theater and public gathering areas there. The library is about to undergo an extensive renovation. Rite Aid has remodeled, as has QFC and Albertsons. Even the old ticket office next to the bike shop across from Albertsons has a new life as Terra Bella, an alluring decorating and home furnishing shop. Who knew? Soon, there will be more construction — along I-90, the school district, at the YFS Thrift Store at Mercerdale Park and maybe Youth Theatre Northwest. All of these projects are signs of an improving economy and the release of pent-up demand for services. Again, they will bring tax dollars to the city and state. Workers, visitors and new residents will spend money. Are there downsides? Yes. More congestion. These new endeavors sometimes displace the old and familiar. Streets and views will be blocked. There will be more competition for a shrinking amount of space. There will be loss — and a bit of anger and regret. Just why are the new buildings so tall? Where can I park now? More buildings. More people. More vehicles. Regional planning agencies have long predicted these trends and planned for meeting them via the state’s Growth Management Act. The surge, delayed for a time, is back.
All of these projects are signs of an improving economy and the release of pentup demand for services.

To the editor Response to good Samaritan story This is a response to the article in the Reporter (July 24, 2013), “Man threatens good Samaritan with sledgehammer.” I had a little trouble grasping all the elements of this article. It seems that a man (good Samaritan) with his family had taken a lost woman home on East Mercer Way. He was confronted by a homeowner with a sledgehammer who threatened the man if he didn’t move his car from his driveway. A scuffle occurred. At this point, the homeowner’s wife came out of the house with a loaded handgun. The driver then quickly moved to his car. The police arrived and took the gun, clip and sledgehammer into evidence. I find the woman’s actions appalling. What did she expect to do? Shoot the man who had misparked? Accidentally shot her husband, the family in the car, a passerby, a neighbor? Police Monday | 22 CAR PROWL: A 61-year-old Carnation man reported that his car was entered during the previous Friday in the 4000 block of Island Crest Way. $900 in power tools were stolen from the vehicle, including a Hitachi frame nail gun.
Tuesday | 23 FRAUD: A 26-year-old Mercer Island man was the target of a fraudulent incident occurring between July 8 and July 19. The victim was written a fraudulent check for a return on a deposit he had made at an earlier time, but the check bounced. The total loss was $1,920.58.
Friday | 26 DUI: A 48-year-old Seattle man in a Lexus was arrested after speeding at 105 mph in the 6600 block of westbound I-90 at 11:56 p.m. on Friday, July 26, in a 60 mph zone. The suspect had been
drinking, and he attempted to cheat the blood alcohol content test. After physically resisting a blood draw at the hospital, the suspect was forcefully taken to the ground with help from the Washington State Patrol, had his blood drawn, and was booked into the Issaquah Jail. He was cited for obstructing an officer. FOUND: A single-speed bicycle was found in the 7400 block of S.E. 24th Street around 4:54 p.m.

Al Novack died on July 27, 2013. He was born in Red Lodge, Montana on March 11, 1925. Al was predeceased by his parents John Novack, Anna Maddio Novack and his brother Edward Novack. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Betty, his eight children and their spouses: Vance Novack (Irene), Deborah Evans (Mike), Michelle Fletcher (Terry), Mitch Novack (Lauren), Craig Novack (Jennifer), Brad Novack (Kate), Mary Ellen Johnson (Kevin) and Garth Novack (May), and seventeen wonderful grandchildren. Al graduated from Tahoma High School in 1942. His studies were interrupted with WWII during which time he served in the U.S. Army Air Force as an instructor pilot in the Troop Carrier Command. When the war ended, he entered the University of Washington and completed his medical degree in 1952. He then interned and took an additional year of surgical training at Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. For the next six years, he trained for maxillofacial cancer surgery at John Hopkins and Union Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and as a National Cancer Trainee at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York under the guidance of Dr. John Conley. Al returned to Seattle and practiced at Swedish Hospital from 1960 until he retired in 1992. Thank you to everyone in the skilled nursing care unit at Emerald Heights’ Corwin Center and to Cinda (Evergreen Hospice). Their nursing care and emotional support was greatly appreciated by Al and his entire family. At Al’s request, there will be no service. By the numbers: Seafair patrols This year, though attendance was down, marine patrol on Lake Washington was still busy for Seafair. William Shaffer Roberts
William Shaffer Roberts (Bill), 83, of Mercer Island, WA passed away peacefully Friday, July 26, 2013 at Pacific Regent in Bellevue. Bill was born February 1, 1930 in Portland, OR to James D. Roberts and Wilma Shaffer Roberts. Bill’s grandfather and grandmother (Willam B. Shaffer and Ida Mae Shaffer) were early settlers of Waitsburg, WA where his grandfather was the president of the Preston-Shaffer Milling, Co. Bill attended Hillside elementary and Lincoln High School in Portland. He attended Dartmouth College, Connecticut Wesleyan and Washington State College where he graduated in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration. He met his wife, Charlene Luckey on a WSU summer study tour in Europe and after graduation they married in 1954 and have resided on Mercer Island, WA. He is survived by his wife, Charlene and his two children Charles W. Roberts (Chuck) - wife Salina and grandsons Quentin and Tyrus living in the Los Angeles area and Susan Roberts McMaster - husband Ron and grandsons Sean and Alec living in West Seattle. He started his banking career in 1954 at National Bank of Commerce, stayed through its various successor banks and was a member of the Master Appraisal Institute. He retired in 1986. Bill’s interests since retirement were investments, stamp collecting, genealogy, bridge, and world travel. He owned and managed wheat farms around the Waitsburg/Walla Walla area. Bill loved his family and was a kind and generous father, husband and friend to many people. He was a generous patron of the Seattle Symphony, the Rainier Club, the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. He was a 50 year member of the Washington Athletic Club and lifetime member of the Columbia Tower Club. Residents warned of new telephone scam By Rob Jira

A new telephone scam is sweeping Mercer Island. Scam artists are calling up residents pretending to be representing law enforcement agencies, even the Mercer Island Police Department, asking for donations. These scam artists are asking for credit card numbers and personal information over the telephone to try and get you to “donate” to a good cause. What you are doing is providing these scam artists with your personal credit card information and all of your sensitive personal information they will need to make fraudulent charges against your credit cards/ credit score. You are also providing them with information to open new fraudulent accounts in your name. Not only can this hurt your credit score, but it can also cause unnecessary financial woes in your daily lives. The first thing you need to remember is this: the Mercer Island Police Department will never call you and ask for a donation. We will also never ask you for your personal information over the telephone, unless it pertains to an investigation. However, keep in mind that some nonprofit agencies may be affili-

ated with law enforcement and do call up asking for donations. Here is a tip to keep you safe from this scam: • Call and verify the legitimacy of the agency and claim. If they are claiming to be a police department, ask for their name and phone number, then tell them you will call them back. Go to your computer and cross reference their agency by searching for that police department online. Call the number you find online and inquire into the “donation” before you proceed any further. Then it is up to you on whether you want to donate your money to them. Here are some important things to remember when dealing with other popular scams: • Other scams that we deal with target our elder community. These scam artists will attempt to prey on the trusting nature of people in their later years. Usually a scam artist will find the name of your family member, call you, and pretend to be that relative in trouble trapped in a foreign country. The scam artist will usually ask you to send money through a money order (i.e. Western Union) to “bail” them out of trouble. The scam artist will also ask you not to tell anyone about them being in trouble because they do not want anyone in their family to find out about it. The best advice that I can give you is to immediately call a family member to check on the location of the person claiming to be in trouble. • Another popular scam is when someone will call you or send you mail saying that you have won a large sum of

New dermatology clinic brings doctors closer to home By Megan Managan

When it was time to be closer to home, the Gartons started looking for a place to establish their own dermatology clinic on Mercer Island. Doctors Kyle and Rachel Garton, both dermatologists, will be the primary physicians at the new Dermatology Clinic. The new clinic, located at 7707 S.E. 27th Street, Suite 104, next to Walgreens, was inspired by the pair’s desire to be closer to home. Since they already live on Mercer Island, it seemed like a natural fit. “Like everyone, we moved here about three or four years ago for the schools. It’s a pretty common reason for people to move to Mercer Island,” said Dr. Kyle Garton. “We’d been in Seattle since graduating from medical school, which was over 10 years ago. Rachel, my wife, the other dermatologist who will be here, worked at Group Health for about
10 years. A big reason for wanting to be here, we’re big believers in living and working in the same place, especially with three kids. We’ve really grown to love Mercer Island and said let’s start a practice here.” Rachel Garton will be the main doctor at the clinic as her husband will continue his work with medical students at the University of Washington and part time at another clinic in Bellevue. Garton said he believes the practice is a good fit on the Island because they plan to focus on medical dermatology, helping patients with any problems related to their skin. “Our real focus is medical and surgical dermatology,” he said. “It should be a really good complement to the other folks who are on the Island. We don’t do a lot of cosmetic procedures. If you look at your skin and there is a problem with it, we treat that. One of our strengths that we can hopefully offer to

A big part of any dermatology practice, Garton said, is helping to educate people about their skin and when it’s time to see a doctor. “One of the biggest things we do is skin cancer
screening and protection. The people who typically are going to need a dermatologist are people who have had a history of skin cancer, has a family history of melanoma or has simply noticed a change in their skin,” said the doctor. “Those are the folks who should really seek the care of a dermatologist. Also, patients with rashes, acne or psoriasis. The good thing about the skin is you know if it’s broken. Pretty much, if it’s an abnormality, it’s a pretty good bet that a dermatologist should take a look at that. Or at least guide you and tell you what it is.” He added that catching

Olympic Physical Therapy has moved its office to a new location on Mercer Island. The business is now located in The Mercer building at 7560 S.E. 27th Street. Mark Bouma, one of the clinic’s physical therapists and clinic supervisor, said the business moved from its old office in part because of new technology and changes in the business. The clinic was located in the Island Corporate Center for over 10 years, said Bouma, which was built to accommodate the clinic’s gym equipment, as well as patient rooms plus offices and space for charts and paperwork. Bouma said with all the changes in the last decade, and mov-
ing to electronic records, they just didn’t need as much space. “The clinic we were in — we were there for over 10 years and it was a great location, but we just didn’t need that much space. We were looking for a new space and found this,” he said. “We have the same gym size, and we’re able to bring all our equipment over.” Bouma said Olympic will be expanding their athletic engineering program in the new office, and will be upgrading their computer system in the coming months. “It’s more high tech,” he said. “It’s going to be better for our patients and physical therapists.” He said the new location is open and ready for patients to stop by, and they will host an open house once a few finishing touches are done. Island business earns county honors for waste reduction Mercer Island’s American Classic Homes was named to King County’s Best Workplace for Waste Prevention and Recycling list. The business was named as one of 21 businesses on the honor roll, given to businesses making the county’s list for five or more years. The business was named to the 2013 list for its work

Patriots Jet Team takes to skies for Seafair By Megan Managan

Though it was a quieter Seafair than in years past, thanks to the wet and cloudy weather on Friday and Saturday, that didn’t stop curious onlookers from checking out this year’s Boeing Air Show practice on Friday, Aug. 2, on Mercer Island. This year the Patriots Jet Team practiced over Lake Washington on Friday afternoon, and performed shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Patriots Jet Team last performed as part of Seafair weekend in 2007 and 2008. The team of six planes includes pilots who have flown with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, USAF Thunderbirds
and Royal Canadian Air Force. The team was founded in 2003 as a two-plane formation group, but have since expanded to the current six. The team’s performances include a computerized red, white and blue smoke system. This year’s pilots include: lead Dean Wright (#1), right wingman Rob Hutchison (#2), left wingman John Posson (#3), slot pilot Paul Strickland (#4), outer left wingman Rob Mitchell (#5) and right wingman Scott Ind (#6). This year’s Seafair attendance was down by 45,000 people. Officials expected 160,000 to attend over the weekend, but fell short.

Pan Roasted Alaska Salmon with ChampagneCaper Vinaigrette
½ cup plus 2 tablespoons
Pour ½ cup olive oil into
a 12-inch frying pan over medium heat; when hot, add shallots and garlic, and stir until limp but not brown, about two minutes. Scrape into a food processor and add vinegar, lemon juice and mustard; whirl until smooth. Pour the mixture into a bowl. Stir in capers, tarragon and salt and pepper. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Rinse salmon portions all over with salt and pepper. Heat remaining two tablespoons of oil in the same frying pan over medium-high heat. Add salmon, skin side up, and cook until browned on the bottom, for about three minutes. Turn salmon over, then transfer pan to the oven. Bake until fish is opaque through out, about five to seven minutes. Transfer salmon to plates, drizzle with a little vinaigrette, and sprinkle with parsley. Serve remaining vinaigrette at the table to add taste.

The wedding, dinner reception and dancing took place outdoors overlooking the Puget Sound at the Whidbey Island home of the groom’s grandparents, Jim and Darcy Bruckner. The wedding was officiated by a friend of the bride and groom, Sierra Fleenor, from the Harvard University Divinity School. The groom is the son of James and Mary Jo Bruckner, formerly of Mercer Island, who currently reside in Bellevue, Wash. The bride is the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth Pearson, of Plainville, Massachusetts. The bride and groom were honored to have three sets of grandparents in attendance for their wedding, including Krista’s grandparents, Robert and Jeanne Odam from Wrentham, Mass.;

Marines on charity run to pass through Mercer Island Saturday, Aug. 10 By Megan Managan

Mercer Islanders are encouraged to come out and cheer on a group of Marines as they run 100 miles through the greater Seattle area on Aug. 10 and 11. The run will raise money to research brain diseases and injuries experienced by veterans. It’s the third year that Always Brothers, a nonprofit fraternal organization made up of Marines and other veterans, has hosted the run. A group of Marines and civilians will leave from Leschi at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, and run through Mercer Island, Renton, Maple Valley and Enumclaw before stopping at the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs Soldiers Home in Orting. During the Mercer Island portion of the event, the runners will cross the Island on the I-90 express lanes.
Island residents are encouraged to come out Saturday morning to cheer on the runners. The run will continue through Puyallup, up through Sumner, Auburn, Kent, Tukwila, South Park and West Seattle, where the group will get a police escort over the West Seattle bridge to finish at CenturyLink Field at 9 a.m. on Aug. 11. The event will raise money for One Mind for Research, a Seattle nonprofit that is dedicated to curing brain diseases, including traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. “My original inspiration for working to improve diagnostics and treatments for brain injuries was the incredible number of soldiers returning from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with TBI and PTS,” said One Mind’s CEO Gen. Pete Chiarelli (Ret.), Seattle native and former Vice Chief of Staff of the

The 16U boys team played in the 18U bracket, winning the tournament, while the 14U boys team also played up in the 16U bracket, winning as well. The 16U girls team finished in third place
overall. Ten members of the Rain City Water Polo club were named to AllTournament teams. Mercer Island triathlon team competes in Lake Stevens Ironman Twenty-seven members of the Club Emerald Triathlon team competed in the Lake Stevens Half Ironman triathlon on July 21. The event, which included a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run, featured 1,500 athletes. Five of the Club Emerald team members entered as part of a relay, with 22 doing the race as individuals. Each athlete had eight
