It’s the beginning of August and a new winter coat is likely the last thing on your mind. While the sun is beaming hot and the weather is still dry, IAFF Local 3520 — the union that represents East Pierce Fire and Rescue — is seeking donations for Operation Warm. Each donation to Operation Warm will help provide coats to Pierce County children in need. The coats will be acquired from Operation Warm and distributed by East Pierce firefighters in the Sumner School District this fall. They are guaranteed to be American made, a fact that Local 3520 President Mike Westland is proud of, because it helps to ensure jobs stay here in the United States as opposed to being sent overseas, he said. Coats distributed through the program will be brand new, which fulfills an important need that is often overlooked. A good quality coat will shield children from the elements, but it also provides a higher sense of self-esteem, said Westland. Lack of sufficient winter wear has been shown to deter regular attendance during colder months,

Homeless camp sweep kicks off police presence in forests By Daniel Nash Staff Writer

Bonney Lake police discovered at least two homeless camps in the Washington State University forest July 30, one littered with hundreds of possibly stolen gambling pulltabs. The discovery occurred during a planned sweep of the forest to find and break up transient camps — and hopefully recover a handgun recently reported stolen. In the past five weeks, the department received reports of seven successful and one attempted vehicle

prowl outside the shopping centers north of the forest; three prowls were reported in the past week. The crimes occurred at various times of day and often in the space of minutes, leaving police no clear pattern to follow, Officer Daron Wolschleger said. “When a theft happens out here, usually the suspect will run to the woods, take what they want and discard everything else before moving on,” he said. The roughly 150-acre forest is thick with growth and dozens of rough trails, making police searches on foot or bike difficult at best;

felony crimes will warrant a K-9 search. The area’s relative seclusion has made it a prime spot for concealing criminal activity, ranging from underage drinking to drug activity and, in some cases, sexual assault. “(When a crime is reported) we can contain it with patrol cars from outside, but it’s still a huge area to cover,” Wolschleger said. During warmer months, the forest has also been known to house illegal camp sites. Last summer, the city shut down “Paradise Cove,” a particularly sophisticated vagrant encampment replete with power,

a kitchen and a structure sturdy enough to ride out the 2012 ice storm. Police had been planning for weeks to sweep the forest for camp sites in a recently acquired all-terrain vehicle. Department officials plan to use the buggy — a Kawasaki Mule 610 — to eliminate the trials of searching Bonney Lake’s forests. The vehicle is designed to traverse rough terrain and hopped several curbs in and out of the forest easily during the operation. The report of a .45 caliber pistol

mule FROM 1 stolen from a vehicle parked near the Tall Firs Cinema Friday put police on high alert. Officers on the sweep were urged to approach anyone they encountered with caution, and a metal detector was deployed at every camp site found. The Mule was deployed outside the Franciscan Medical Pavilion shortly after 2 p.m. and, within minutes, came across a man and teenage boy wandering a section of woods north of Fred Meyer. The man was unaware of its presence until police were right on top of them — indeed, the small motor could easily be mistaken for a lawn mower. The two — known to police from past investigations — were stopped and searched. Officers seized a boxed printer cartridge to investigate whether it had been reported stolen. The man was released from the scene and the teen agreed to lead police to a camp deep in the forest south of Goodwill. “We probably wouldn’t have come down a trail like this without the Mule,” Sgt. Ryan Boyle said as he led the way into a path surrounded by trees and brambles.

Several yards in, officers found the encampment — a pile of blankets, pillows, a small statue of a geisha and the aforementioned pulltabs. “It’s not unusual for (a suspect) to steal a blanket from the Goodwill and bring it back here,” Wolschleger said. They notified Public Works employees — on standby during the operation to clean up any camps found — and Wolschleger and Chief Dana Powers moved on to search for similar sites. Boyle stayed behind to sweep the area in case the missing handgun was hidden nearby. No one had reported the theft of the pull-tabs, commonly sold in bars, and they didn’t appear to be used. But the department would be able to report the ticket numbers to the state Gambling Commission for later investigation, Boyle said. Soon Powers and Wolschleger radioed to report they found another encampment, less than half a mile west and immediately outside the Tall Firs Plaza. “Bonney Lake police, we’re coming in,” Wolschleger said just before opening the front of a small tent. No one was inside, but

there was bedding and several boxes of food. “This is something somebody will definitely come back here for. “Just 30 feet off the main trail, there are people sleeping out here.” Wolschleger made a note to have an officer check the site for occupants later. The majority of the forest trails had been searched inside an hour, a feat that would have been impossible without the Mule. The Mule was acquired by the department earlier this year after being recovered and impounded by King and Pierce counties’ P.A.T.R.O.L. auto theft task force. State Farm had long ago paid out to the original owner, and offered to donate it to the task force. They declined, and BLPD was able to pick it up for the cost of the impound fee. It was soon refitted with emergency lights and decals identifying it as a law enforcement vehicle. The buggy was present at the recent Spike & The Impalers concert and had been tested in forest terrain, but Tuesday’s sweep was its first major operation. “We’re very excited about having the Mule,” Assistant Chief James Keller said in a written statement. “Our goal is to prevent transients from setting up camps, and to apprehend car prowlers and shoplifters who may have been able to get away in the forest previously.” The Mule is now intended for more frequent deployments in the WSU forest, as well as the forests outside Allan Yorke Park and Bonney Lake High School. OUT-OF-CONTROL DRIVER: (This entry is related to a story appearing in the Courier-Herald’s July 31 issue, but contains further information.) At 6:30 p.m. July 23, officers were dispatched to 189th Avenue East, where a caller observed a white station wagon perform a donut turn and speed off at an estimated 90 miles per hour on the 25 mile per hour residential street. While officers were en route, another caller reported the vehicle had

moved on to Angeline and the shirtless driver was screaming about being shot at. An officer on the way to investigate observed the vehicle speeding in the opposite direction and activated the patrol car’s emergency lights. The station wagon veered into the oncoming lane and came within feet of the patrol car, which was forced to swerve to the shoulder to avoid a collision. The officer pursued the car onto South Prairie Road East and 214th Avenue East, where it ran a red light and momentarily eluded the chase until motorists indicated the driver had turned onto 119th Street East. On 119th, the car switched direction and again attempted to swerve into the patrol car, allowing the driver to again momentarily lose

police. The patrol car, another Bonney Lake officer and a sheriff’s deputy caught up with the vehicle on South Prairie Road East as it traveled westbound, then east onto state Route 410. The station wagon drove off 410 through South Prairie and toward Orting. Dispatch coordinated with Puyallup and Orting police to assist. The suspect driver lost control of his vehicle west of Orville Road East, sliding off the roadway and landing on its roof in a ditch. The driver exhibited odd behavior leading police to believe he may have been under the influence of methamphetamine or narcotic bath salts. He said he was being chased and shot at. He crawled from the vehicle on command and was handcuffed. He was transported to Good Samaritan

Hospital, under guard by a Bonney Lake officer at paramedics’ request. He was placed under medical supervision until he could be released to Pierce County jail for booking on tow counts of reckless driving, two counts of first-degree assault and one count of attempting to elude a police vehicle. MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: On July 24, an officer was dispatched to Ashton Avenue in response to a caller who had seen juveniles put something in a microwave on the porch, causing it to spark. The reporting party had already unplugged the microwave and there was no imminent danger of fire. The arriving officer opened the microwave and observed the melted remains of a cigarette lighter. The caller said she was walking her dog and had observed two white boys, approximately 12 or 13 years old, on the porch. She did not see them with the microwave but believed they were involved due to her finding the sparking appliance soon afterward. The officer documented the damage

for evidence. SHOPLIFTING: Shortly before 1:30 a.m. July 25, an officer was called to a theft at the AM/PM. The patrol car was in the vicinity and briefly laid in wait for the suspect vehicle — a silver Chrysler sedan — to pass, but it did not. The officer continued to the business, where an employee reported a white male with a blackened eye, possibly in his 20s, removed an 18-pack of Budweiser beer from the cooler and left the store without paying. Earlier in the day, the officer had assisted sheriff’s deputies in handling a party complaint on 218th Avenue East, where the same make and model car had been parked on the shoulder of the road. The partygoers had been made to pour out their remaining alcohol, and the officer believed it likely they had gone out for more beer. Another officer and a sheriff’s deputy joined in responding to the party, where the sedan was parked and warm to the touch. Police almost immediately found a man with all the

physical characteristics and clothing of the suspect, holding a Budweiser beer. He was arrested and cited without incident, and the remaining beer was recovered. INTERRUPTED PROWL: Shortly before 2:30 a.m. July 25, an officer traveling south on 214th Avenue East observed two people running away from vehicles belonging to O’Reilly Auto Parts. A two-officer area check did not yield suspects. One of the cars had a smashed-in window, and a clipboard and manual credit card imprinter were found laying under another vehicle. It appeared the patrol car’s presence had interrupted a vehicle prowl. A manager for the business was contacted regarding the damage and attempted theft. At 8:14 a.m., another officer was called to a reported vehicle prowl outside Auto Zone. Paperwork of no financial value had been taken from the glove compartment. The reporting employee was informed of the earlier morning theft. See blotter, Page 15

From typewriters to smartphones I learned to type on a manual typewriter that had 50 keys. Then, before I turned around twice, there were electric typewriters, which were an improvement of sorts, but not much. The real “astounding” advance came with the computer and spell-check and the printer which, unfortunately, relegated 70 percent of the nation’s secretaries to the trash pile. Such is the price of progress and revolutions. Today, my computer has 113 keys. Yet, the most I ever use is 52. That’s 61 keys Wally DuChateau I never used and Columnist have no earthly idea what they do. Similarly, back in the day, my microwave had a timer-dial and that was it. There were no other controls. A current Sears’ model has 33 buttons, few of which make any sense to me. What the hell is “Lbs Defrost” and how does it differ from “Auto Defrost”? And what, pray tell, is “Control Lock” or “Mini-Options”? Really now, all I want to do is pop some popcorn. With the digital revolution, nearly all of our products have become increasingly complex. I suspect this has something to do with our consumer-oriented culture. We always want more stuff for our money, so manufactures think they have to provide more and more func-

Consider gearing up early for back to school I would like to thank my cousin Dianna for getting me to move to the Bonney Lake area in the mid-1980s. Her mother-in-law had taken ill and the family did not want her house to sit empty. So I moved from a condo in north Seattle to Ponderosa Estates. This was before Janice Harrison and others took up the crusade to get the streets of Ponderosa paved. There was a huge lake that formed in front of the mobile home where I lived during the rainy season. During better weather, the gravel roads were rough and rutted. Much has changed for the better in Ponderosa over the years. The time came to find a home of my own. I was expecting my daughter. On a clear day we followed the road towards looming Mount Rainier to the southeast in search of a home with a view of the mountain. We ended up with a vacant lot on the ridge and added a new mobile home. We lived there on the ridge during my daughter’s early childhood. The view of the foothills, trees and South Prairie in the valley were stunning. The greenbelt was a fun place to play, the neighbors friendly. It is a tight knit, affordable community. As previously discussed in an earlier col-

umn, Prairie Ridge is served by three school districts: White River, Sumner and Orting. Students in the Prairie Ridge community attend 10 different schools. I would also like to thank cousin Dianna for teaching me how to shop. Buy holiday items the day after the holiday or seasonal items at the end of the season when they are marked down and put them away for next year. Yes, David Wells, I already have bags of toys and eggs for the 2014 egg hunt at Allan Yorke. My extreme couponing partner on food drives at work, Cheryl, taught me everything I know about working the rewards cards, coupons and sales. I pour through the coupons on Sunday as well as the ads. I buy things when

they are on sale, not when I need them, to stretch my dollars. I store them away and then I have them. Food, toiletries, school supplies, gifts, holiday supplies, etc. I am very proud to use my senior citizen discounts the first Tuesday of the month and my AARP card when I shop, eat, travel. I have store credit cards that give me an extra 5 percent discount and free shipping. Lately, I have been shopping Bonney Lake first for all kinds of school supplies. Yes, school is a month away and summer is just getting started. But there are some great deals. Buy now and stock up. As the first day of school draws closer, the sales and school supplies grow less plentiful. And while you are buying supplies for your kids, how about picking up a few extras for your neighbors who could use a helping hand? There are several opportunities to make student’s return to school brighter. I have mentioned White River Communities Families First Coalition and Sumner’s Communities for Families before in my columns. Among the many other projects they

A Sumner teen was among those honored Tuesday at Gene Coulon Park for his role in saving a drowning girl and boy in Lake Sammamish earlier this year. The boys, Patrick Finigan, 16, of Sumner, and his cousin Ian Fursman, 15, of Snoqualmie, were enjoying a day at the lake when they heard splashing and cries of distress among a group of teens. While others ran for shore to try and get help, Finigan and Fursman dove in to help. They pulled one girl from the water and realized a boy with her was also having trouble and went back to help him. Finigan pulled him out and Fursman helped get him to shore, where Patrick, who is trained in

The golf course in Sumner may be sold to an industrial developer as soon as mid-August when the Sumner City Council is expected to vote on a purchase and sale agreement.

The City Council entrusted Colliers International, a real estate firm based in Seattle, with marketing the sale of Sumner Meadows Golf Links last winter. After courting thousands of potential buyers, it was found that no eligible offers were placed which intend-

ed to keep the land a golf course. Mayor Dave Enslow and Colliers met with representatives from the top three bids earlier this year. On June 10, the City Council was updated on the process and asked for permission to pursue a purchase and

sale agreement, the results of which led to the impending consideration. The progress comes after years of research and discussion. The 146-acres golf course was built on land originally acquired in 1993

She did not know the gender of the subject, due to their face being covered, but the subject was wearing women’s clothing. After a period of following, she called 911 at which point the subject turned and walked away. Officers conducted a search of the area and the subject was located nearby. Once they located the subject they immediately recognized him from previous

police encounters. The male subject was wearing white tights with lace at the bottom, a jacket and a bra stuffed with socks. The male subject advised he likes to wear women’s clothing sometimes and he admitted following somebody on the street. Officers tried to re-contact the caller but she was not available. DOMESTIC: On July 17, officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance. Upon officer’s arrival they could hear a male and a female yelling. Officers approached the door, at which point it was opened by the male subject inside. Wells broke free and swam a bit away and continued yelling for help from the people on the shore, who she said just watched. “Still, nobody would help me at all,” she said. Finally, someone grabbed the life ring and tossed that in the water. Wells was able to swim to it, take it over to where the man had been, but he was no longer visible. Wells, who said she knows how to swim, but has never had any formal training, began diving into the lake and found the man

under water, pulling him up and giving him the ring. Wells said when she pulled him out, he was non-responsive and had blood coming out of his nose. She pushed him into shore. The man is still alive today, thanks to Wells. “And I’m not even a strong swimmer,” she said. On Tuesday, Wells was honored for her heroic acts with the King County Meritorious Service Award during a brief ceremony at Coulon Park. “Without even thinking of her own safety, Corinna jumped in the water to save that individual,” Renton Fire Chief Mark Peterson

said. “You made a difference in that man’s life; He is alive today.” All three of the rescuers were lauded as heroes by those in attendance, but Wells doesn’t necessarily see herself that way. “I didn’t want to be the one to help him, but it was very clear he was going to die and nobody was going to help him,” she said. “I don’t think it’s being a hero. To date, Sumner Meadows Golf Links only generates enough money to cover operating costs; a trend mimicked at golf courses across the country. Other financial burdens associated with the golf course, such as debt repayment and facility improvement, comes from the city’s general fund.

Research shows that selling the land as a golf course might earn the city approximately $1 million, but marketing it as land eligible for development has the potential to rake in more than $30 million, according to city of Sumner Communications Director Carmen Palmer. In August 2012, a city-wide survey was conducted, which asked residents if the golf course should be kept under the city’s care or if

it should be sold as industrial land. About 80 percent responded with suggestions to sell. Details of the agreement will be released at a city council meeting later this month when the council votes whether or not to accept the purchase and sale agreement, according to Palmer. At the time of press, the meeting date had not yet been determined.

Plateau club wins at Legion tourney By Kevin Hanson Senior Writer

In early June, there were 56 American Legion baseball teams scattered around Washington, all hoping to advance to the state championships in Walla Walla. By late July, only a handful had seen their dreams come true. Included in that select group was the Plateau Baseball Club that eventually posted a 27-15 season record and tied for the third-sixth placing in the AA Legion tournament. The tourney was staged July 27 through Aug. 1 at two sites in Walla Walla. The team brought together 10 players from White River High School and three from Enumclaw High. The squad was coached by Mike Williams – White River’s varsity coach – and his son, Connor. “We just kinda ran out of gas,” Williams said, following a 13-3 loss to the host Walla Walla team on July 31 that saw the PBC’s tourney run come to a close. Williams had nothing but praise for his summer squad. “What a tremendous group of young men to work with, all competed every inning,” he wrote in an email. “Great

friendships were created and a lifetime of memories over the summer for sure.” Being involved in 42 games following the regular high school season helps coaches as well as players, Williams added. “Connor and I really learned a lot too... more innings really helped us fine-tune our offensive and defensive philosophy.” The Plateau team won three and lost two in Walla Walla, with pitcher Sean Klapperich picking up two of the victories on the mound; he allowed just three runs in 13 innings of work. Christian Sines Sam Rabb and Matt Salisbury hit the ball well all week, Williams said, while noting that Cody Cloud continued his high onbase percentage; during the course of the season, he got on base 42 times without hitting the ball – drawing 22 bases on balls and getting hit by 18 pitches. During state play, he reached base nine times in 14 plate appearances. Williams also singled out Mitchell Webster and Salisbury for their consistently solid play in the outfield. Here’s a rundown of the Plateau Baseball Club’s five-day tournament run. Saturday: The local squad defeated Lakeside Recovery 5-3.

Monday: A 4-1 victory over Colville guaranteed the PBC a spot in the top eight. It was a big game for Buchanan, who went the distance on the mound, scattering six hits and striking out five while allowing only one walk. At the plate, he had three hits, scored one run and drove in another. Also scoring runs were Webster, who had two hits, Brandon Henke and Sam Rabb. Tuesday: The winning continued with a 6-3 verdict over Mason, a team from the Gray’s Harbor area. Wednesday: A loser-out contest resulted in the 11-3 loss to the host team. The Plateau team was still in contention after three full innings of play, trailing just 4-2, but the Bruins exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. In the third frame, PBC scored twice. Cloud walked, advanced on an infield play and scored on a Webster single. Webster motored to third thanks to Walla Walla errors, them scored on a passed ball. Enumclaw native Kasey Kahne won the GoBowling.com 400 at the Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania Sunday. It was his second victory of the season giving him a likely entry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Kahne, 33, moved from ninth to eighth place in the Sprint Cup standings with the win. Kahne beat teammate Jeff Gordon at race’s close. Kahne went into turn 1 with two laps remaining and passed Gordon to secure the win. “I just needed to clear him, and when we got to turn 2, I was able to do that,” Kahne said on his website. “It was a great race. We had a really fast car. DUI: At 6:55 a.m. July 28, an officer was dispatched to a single-car rollover accident on 193rd Avenue East. A red sport utility vehicle was turned on its side in the northbound lane. The caller reported she had heard the collision and gone outside to find a man crawling from the car. She said she asked if he was OK and he responded “Don’t call the police.” Another officer was summoned to search for anyone traveling on foot; he was able to meet with a friend of the driver who identified the driver and said he had returned to his (the friend’s house) after the crash. The friend said they had all been drinking the night before and he had, at one point, taken the suspect’s keys. The suspect approached police at the scene of the crash and said it had been caused by looking down to change the radio station. He exhibited signs of possible intoxication and the officer asked if he would participate in field sobriety tests, which he did. The tests showed signs of intoxication, and the suspect was processed and cited for driving under the influence. BURGLARY: At 10:44 a.m. July 30, an officer responded to the lobby where a citizen reported the residential burglary of a 94th Street East garage. Chainsaws, an outboard motor and a pressure washer had been taken

from the garage at some point in July. The man was advised to monitor Craigslist and the local pawn shops for the stolen items, and given a case number. BORED AND LARCENOUS: At 7:08 p.m. July 30, officers were dispatched to Walmart, where a man had reportedly just shoplifted a backpack. The store’s asset protection officer said the suspect had gotten into a vehicle, which then pulled into the nearby Jack in the Box drive-thru. Police stopped the car as it was exiting the drivethru lane and detained the suspected passenger, who had the backpack on the floor between his legs. He agreed to speak to police and said he took the backpack because he was “bored walking around.”When asked if he took anything else, he said he took some lighters and a white cord. In a later interview with asset protection, the store officer said he had recognized the man from prior similar incidents, which had resulted in his banishment from the store. He observed the theft but did not interfere, as the suspect had become violent with employees in the past. The suspect was booked into Puyallup Jail for seconddegree criminal trespass and third-degree theft. The driver of the car was found to have a misdemeanor arrest warrant out of Buckley, and an officer arranged a meet with Buckley police. She said she was not aware her passenger had stolen the backpack.

Teens’ unique health needs worth a check-up Parents of infants and young children regularly visit the pediatrician’s office for their child’s checkups. These visits offer an opportunity to learn about keeping a child healthy and to ensure he/she is up-to-date on vaccines. However, when a child reaches the teen years, these annual checkups may fall off the radar. A recent survey, fielded by Harris Interactive, and commissioned by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, in collaboration with and with support from Pfizer Inc, found that while

85 percent of parents polled say an annual checkup is very important for those zero to five years, only 61 percent believe the same is true for teens. Teens have a unique set of healthcare needs. Annual checkups can be an important opportunity for healthcare providers to identify key health issues and for adolescents to begin to independently make decisions regarding their health. “Annual visits offer teens an opportunity to develop a one-on-one relationship with their physician and to begin to

take responsibility for their own health,” said Susan J. Rehm, MD, NFID medical director. “It is particularly concerning for teens to be missing out on annual checkups because adolescence is a crucial period in life and it’s important for teens to establish healthy habits.” Even though health experts recommend annual wellness visits for teens, about 60 percent of teens surveyed identified at least one reason for not getting an annual checkup. Of those, about onethird believe that they only need to see a

doctor when sick. However, physicians polled report that teens and their parents are more likely to ask about a number of health topics, including weight, sexual health, vaccines, and stress-related conditions, during an annual checkup than at a sick visit. No chaperones needed? Sounds great to me! I have been at a sweet place in parenthood for a couple years now. For the record, I don’t hate the zoo; it’s probably one of my favorite places to go. But not being particularly partial to sun and concrete, I decided I would rather hike on the surrounding, shaded trails. Who knew what a gem the Point Defiance area of Tacoma was? It took my friend from Florida to show me — she had transplanted here many years ago before she moved back seven years ago. We did give the kids the choice to go hiking with us or go into the zoo and they chose the zoo. A couple hours later when we had hiked a

short trail through the forest and walked the path along the waterfront, I called my oldest daughter. She told me they still had much to see after they ate lunch. So my friend and I decided we would find a Thai food restaurant in which to have a sit-down, grown-up lunch. We searched on her cell phone and found an almost-five star Thai restaurant named “Indochine” in downtown Tacoma, plugged it into the GPS and drove there. When we walked in the door of the restaurant we were pleasantly surprised by its exotic atmosphere. With its mix of wood, bricks and textiles we really felt we were sneaking away to something we didn’t want to share with the kids. The food was also

fantastic and they had a different flare on everything from sauces to paella. Definitely not a place we’d want to take the kids. We kind of reveled in the fact that not only were we able to drop the kids off at the zoo, but we left the premises of Point Defiance and drove to another part of town. Just as we were finishing our lunch my daughter texted me that they were ready to be picked up. I told her we were almost finished and would be by shortly. What I didn’t tell her was we’d be on our way as soon as we went to “Wanna Cupcake?” a few doors down and enjoyed a banana split and toffee cupcakes. A sweet spot, indeed.
