City of Tacoma News Posted online Fri., Aug. 2 Celebrate National Night Out Against Crime Aug. 6 Tacoma Celebrates 30th Anniversary of National Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 6 Tacoma City Councilmembers will join other area leaders, community members and City of Tacoma staff on Tues., Aug. 6 for the 30th anniversary of National Night Out Against Crime, an event that celebrates previous successes in making Tacoma safer while creating a broader awareness of the resources and partnerships that exist locally to aid future efforts. "Serving as each other's eyes and ears is critical in the fight against crime and National Night Out Against Crime, co-sponsored by Safe Streets, is about taking the time to get to know one another a little better as we move toward our shared vision of a city with vibrant neighborhoods," said Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland. A variety of special events will take place in neighborhoods across Tacoma, as community members join millions of people across the country in ob-

servance of National Night Out Against Crime. Posted online Fri., Aug. 2 Tacoma neighborhood cleanups Aug. 3 Single-family and duplex homeowners and renters in multiple Tacoma neighborhoods are preparing to dispose of unsightly debris from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 3 at Giaudrone Middle School, located at 4902 S. Alaska St., with the assistance of staff from the City of Tacoma and community vol-

unteers. All that is required to discard debris and other unwanted items is proof of neighborhood residence, such as a driver's license or current utility bill. Items that cannot be discarded as part of this effort include material from a business; cars, motorcycles, campers or boat parts; truck canopies, trailers, boats or recreational vehicles; daily household garbage; hazardous waste; riding mowers; and animal carcasses. Posted online Fri., Aug. 2 Tacoma City Council to discuss Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy Tacoma City Council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at City Hall to receive an update on the Port of Tacoma's role in the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy. In 2008, the Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma and Port Metro Vancouver (British Columbia) developed the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy based on the 2005 Puget Sound Maritime Emissions Inventory. The Puget Sound Maritime Emissions Inventory provided detailed information about the source and nature of Port air emissions and was used to set short-term and long-term goals for air emissions reduction at all three ports. The ports completed a second maritime air emissions inventory in 2011, and efforts are currently under way to update the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy by leveraging five years of experience implementing the original

Port hires operations center director

Posted online Weds., July 31 Photo Courtesy Port of Tacoma Dustin Stoker has joined the Port of Tacoma to lead the Port's new operations center. Stoker (pictured) brings more than 14 years of experience in both domestic and international terminal management. Before joining the Port of Tacoma, Stoker served most recently as director of Deltaport Operations at the Port Metro Vancouver, B.C. with Terminal Systems, Inc. He also has served as the chief operations officer at Abu Dhabi Terminals, and in management positions at Port of Salalah/APM Terminals and APM Terminals in the Netherlands. In his new position, Stoker is responsible for overall port operations, including waterway management, road and rail functions, and breakbulk and terminal operations. In an effort to help local residents improve the health of their homes and neighborhoods, local organizations have partnered to provide information on money-saving and neighborhood environment protection programs currently offered throughout the City of Tacoma. Project staff are visiting door-to-door to ask what services and information residents need for the purpose of organizing and offering workshops related to the requested topics. Councilmembers will not take public comment during the study session, which will be held on Tues., Aug. 6 at 12 p.m. in Room 16 of Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St. Audio from the meeting will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and online at tvtacoma.com.
