WSDOT pays $71 million to fix 520 bridge pontoons The Washington State Department of Transportation and its contractors have reached agreements on the cost of repairing four pontoons from the first construction cycle and modifying another four pontoons from the second cycle for the new State Route 520 floating bridge. In February, WSDOT acknowledged a design error that led to cracks in the initial cycle of concrete pontoons, which
also required modifications to the second construction cycle to meet the new bridge’s 75-year design life. At that time, WSDOT estimated repairs would cost tens of millions of dollars. The actual cost is slightly more than $71 million. Repairs were recommended by an engineering firm specializing in the repair of concrete structures, and then endorsed by an expert review panel.
“These repairs are important to ensure we are building a safe bridge that meets the needs of the traveling public and supports the regional transportation system for many years,” said WSDOT Secretary Lynn Peterson. “We are committed to following the recommendations of the expert review panel and moving forward.” For the first change order, WSDOT will pay $48.8 million to floating bridge con-
tractor Kiewit-General-Manson, A Joint Venture, to complete Cycle 1 pontoon crack repairs. These repairs for Cycle 1 have been underway since June to help keep overall bridge construction moving. The repair procedure will address cracks that developed in the keel slabs SEE PONTOONS, 3

The site of Bellevue Rare Coins in downtown Bellevue sold last week at a record price of $808 per square foot. The 6,250 square foot property at 10541 N.E. Fourth St. was purchased by Can105 Development LLC for $5 million. Two months ago, another downtown property that houses Mexican restaurant Las Margaritas, sold for what was then deemed a record value of $31 million. Both sites would be eligible for high-rise development under the zoning of the area. According to a story in the Puget Sound Business Journal, it’s unclear what the buyer, listed on a public document as Paul Hsiang Chun Chang, plans to do with the Bellevue Rare Coins property. However, Bob Bencze, the real estate broker who helped him buy the site, said Chang is a Puget Sound-area resident who’s a “land buyer and future possible developer.” Chang owns a quarter acre to the south of Bellevue Rare Coins. The sale price is a significant increase over King County's last appraisal of the lot at $1.44 million and far exceeds what the owners paid for the property. In 2004, Mohammed and Zeenat Miraly of Mercer Island paid just $1.5 million for the site, according to public records.

Colorful ceremony marks city diversity and international friendships In honor of Bellevue's long-running sister city relationship with Hualien, Taiwan, two recently installed Fu Dog statues were dedicated Monday during a festive ceremony at City Hall. A delegation of government and business leaders from Taiwan were on hand to mark the occasion and celebrate the 30-year sister city relationship. The marble Fu Dogs were a gift from Hualien in 2010. and end walls on four of the first six pontoons built in Aberdeen. The repairs include the following: ■ Leasing and towing pontoons to drydock facilities in Portland and Seattle. ■ Building a coffer cell in Tacoma and towing it to Seattle for repairs on the other two pontoons. ■ Implementing repair procedures on all four pontoons: epoxy injections, transverse post-tensioning, and the application of carbon-fiber wrap. ■ For the second change order, WSDOT will pay $22.4 million to pontoon construction contractor Kiewit-General to add transverse post-tensioning to four pontoons while they were in the casting basin in Aberdeen. The work was completed prior to float-out in April. Both costs will be paid from the SR 520 risk reserve developed to address unforeseen project issues as part of the $2.7 billion SR 520 program budget. With these charges paid, the current risk reserve is now $100 million.
With the two change orders complete, the new floating bridge is now estimated to open to traffic in late 2015 or early 2016. The final date will be determined as part of the schedule negotiated with contractors. Additional change orders to be finalized later this year include: ■ Adding transverse post-tensioning to the pontoons built in cycles 3–6. These cycles will be built using the revised design. ■ Schedule effects to the pontoon construction project and the floating bridge and landings project with their respective contractors. The current bridge, which will be 50 years old in August, is vulnerable to earthquakes and windstorms and must be replaced. Construction on the replacement began in April 2012, and pontoon construction is underway at two casting basins: one in Aberdeen and one in Tacoma. Eight pontoons recently floated out of the Tacoma casting basin. With the recent Tacoma float-out, 32 of the 77 pontoons needed to replace the bridge are complete. More information about the SR 520 Bridge Replacement and HOV Program is available at www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/ sr520bridge.

bservers were harsh recently when one of them described as “an absolute abomination” a large entity’s economic news. No, it wasn’t Detroit going bankrupt, but Microsoft reporting its quarterly financials. The company missed analysts’ expectations on quarterly revenue and earnings per share. So, how bad is bad? Microsoft earned only $19.9 billion in the quarter and only had a profit of $4.97 billion. Only? Analysts expected more, but we’re still talking billions in revenue and profits – staggeringly large numbers. So, no need yet for Wall Street stockbrokers to leap from their buildings or contemplate selling apples on the street corner.

Braun is suspended for the rest of the season and the postseason, costing him about $3 million of his $8.5 million salary. Another dozen or so baseball players – including former Mariners Alex Rodriguez – have been targeted by Major League Baseball following a report they had been connected with Biogenesis of America, a now-closed anti-aging clinic. Will they all own up as well as Braun? Let’s hope.

Statistics don’t tell trafficking story O
n Monday, the FBI announced the rescue of 105 children forced into prostitution and the arrest of 150 pimps in a decades long investigation that involved 76 American cities and girls as young as 13. Three of those arrested and three more rescued, were from Seattle, though the problem here is undoubtedly more pervasive than any statistic can capture. The headlines seem so hard to believe that it’s easy to dismiss this as a remote problem, but having interviewed Bellevue native Noel Gomez of the Organization for Prostitution Survivors (OPS), the story hits closer to home than we may realize. Celina Kareiva Noel was trafficked out of Bellevue as a teenager by a man who positioned himself as her boyfriend. Now the co-founder of OPS, who counsels young prostitute through the King County Juvenile Detention Center, lives with severe symptoms of trauma and says people associated with her pimp still look for her. The news comes after a flurry of reports and
conversations about better addressing an obviously disconnected view on gender violence, prostitution and sexuality. It can’t be overlooked that the children rescued in this most recent FBI operation are victims, but the media rarely does a good job of illustrating the complicated backstories of sex workers and their pimps, choosing instead to cast them mostly onedimensionally as victims or as villains. Those backstories can offer clues into how to fight the pervasive problem of trafficking. King County for instance, operates a “John School” in an effort to educate men about the girls they’re caught soliciting. The court-mandated program discusses the harm caused by the sex-industry, often mistakenly labeled a victimless crime. The takeaway message from incidents like this one is that our understanding of human trafficking can’t begin and end with these statistics. We must find a way to paint a more nuanced picture of the problem and the lives it touches.

ome people think all babies are cute, regardless of the species. Really? Ever seen a baby slug? Cockroach? Chigger? My wife and I were out for a stroll a few weeks ago, following a day of rain and wind. We paused along the sidewalk to behold a small bird that looked like it had been born four seconds earlier. We weren’t even sure it was a bird – it looked so Pat Cashman alien. Naked and featherless, the little thing looked like a tiny version of Gondor, the creepy little troll from Lord of the Rings. Our fine, unfeathered friend looked every
bit like the reptilian creatures from which birds are supposedly descended. And beyond that, he appeared to have something else in common with dinosaurs: he looked like a goner. Motionless and gasping for air, my wife picked him up from the wet pavement. (I realize that the preceding sentence might be confusing. It could leave you thinking that my wife was the one who was motionless and gasping for air. But it was the bird. Sorry for the mix-up). “He shouldn’t have to end his short life feeling cold and alone,” she said, slipping the bedraggled creature under her blouse and against her skin. we arrived at our house, the little bird was still hanging in there. My wife fashioned a small Kleenex nest and put the tiny tyke into it in an open dresser drawer in our bedroom. Not only did the little guy keep ticking, but also his tiny mouth was open wide, seemingly saying, “Feed me! Worms would be preferred!” After checking around – including the occasionally reliable Internet – we learned that it is possible to revive and nurture a baby bird. I had always assumed that in the absence of its mother, a newborn bird had no shot. Not so. My wife became a woman on a mission – so utterly focused that she spent the next few days in only two places. When she wasn’t at the bird’s temporary nest shoveling worm fragments into the birdie’s maw, she was out in her garden digging for more. Even in the middle of the night, Mrs. Cashman would arise, snatch a flashlight – and go grub grabbing for an early a.m. feeding. Perhaps it never occurred to my wife that worms were once someone’s babies, too. I guess it’s

Bellevue council needs change Our family moved to Bellevue 16 years ago. We’ve been very happy living in Lake Hills. Unfortunately we’ve been very concerned over the past 4-5 years with some of the actions and conduct on the Bellevue City Council. The council continues to show an inability to work together for the good of the city. This dysfunction caused significant delays with the light rail project, and also resulted in our city spending tens of thousands of dollars on an ethics investigation. Since moving to Bellevue in 1997, we’ve worked sideby-side with many other residents to support PTA, Little League, local nonprofits and our school communities. One thing we’ve learned is that regardless of our differences, people in our community can and do work together when it matters. We should expect the same of our Bellevue City Council members. We hope you'll also join us in supporting Vandana Slatter. We've known Vandana for many years, both on a personal level as parents and community volunteers, and on a civic level through politics. We brought the bird to a wonderful placed called Sarvey Wildlife Care Center (Sarveywildlife.org) in Arlington. We had guessed that our little bird might be anything from a robin to a pelican, but it turned out to be a dark-eyed junco. Who knew? When an animal is fully rehabilitated, Sarvey brings it back to the same location it was first found. “Lucky” was released a few days ago and I swear I saw him sitting on our roof this morning. At least I’d like to think so. One thing’s for sure: He looks a lot better clothed in feathers. Pat Cashman can be reached at pat@patcashman.com and at his podcast at peculiarpodcast.com. Bellevue sisters volunteer for month in Nicaragua BY KEEGAN PROSSER BELLEVUE REPORTER
You might say the Shaik sisters are well traveled. At 14 and 16 years old, Amara and Aneesa Shaik have already stepped foot in 16 countries, lived in India for a year and visited Nicaragua. Twice. And while most of their trips have found their parents tagging along, their recent month-long trip to Nicaragua, was pretty much on their own. The idea to return to Nicaragua was prompted by Aneesa's Honors Orchestra project at Newport High School, where both girls attend. Interested in making the project something she was really passionate about, the world traveler decided to create a music curriculum for children in a Spanishspeaking country. "At first, I thought, this is going to be so easy because I'm really good at Spanish, and I'm so good at music," Aneesa said. "But it was really not easy." Expanding on the lesson, and actually going to Nicaragua, was her idea. But if Aneesa was going to make the trip happen, it wasn't going to be easy. First, her sister Amara would be joining her. Second, the girls' parents, Google researcher Dawn and physician Moin, had a list of pre-requisites: Find an adult who was willing to travel with them at the family’s expense who can stay for at least half the month; take self-defense; pay for half the ticket; and plan their own volunteer experience. Both girls got on the task list right away. They made a list of possible adult travelers (the winner was Katie, who was the Shaik's babysitter in Wichita, Kan.) and enlisted their Uncle Bobo & Aunt TJ - who used to
Aneesa Shaik, 16, (left) and her sister, Amara, 14, already have visited 16 countries. Keegan Prosser, Bellevue Reporter teach combat skills in the US Army - for self-defense. To pay for their tickets, Aneesa opted out of holiday presents and Amara taught flute lessons. In regard to their individual projects, Aneesa's was already taking shape - and Amara planned to work as her sister's assistant. When Aneesa asked friends and family to donate money to help her buy a set of rhythm instruments, and she raised twice as much as she needed within days,
plans changed a bit. "I felt like, if we had extra money, that I should try and do something on my own," said Amara, who decided to teach paper quilling. The girls arranged to hold their lessons at the Libraries For All headquarters, a nonprofit organization they worked with in 2010. But upon arriving in San Juan Del Sur on June 23, things did not go as planned: The person in charge of nonprofit Libraries
For All headquarters, where they planned to hold their classes, was out of town. They also had no students – and were at a loss. Thankfully, the organization connected them with a couple who helped them connect with the nearby school and get settled. After recruiting a handful of students, the girls taught their first lesson half-way through their second week. "Once everything finally got organized and we were teaching for real, it was a huge learning experience," Aneesa said, "even though we were the teachers." The first thing the pair learned? That they might not be cut out for teaching. "I could do one-on-one tutoring, but the crowd control thing –no," Aneesa said. The girls said the fluctuating class sizes also proved discouraging, as they sometimes weren't sure if anyone would show. Even so, the trip proved worthwhile. For Aneesa, it came in the form of a 9-year-old girl who took her music class. "She was just an incredible student," Aneesa said. "She understood everything, she caught on to everything." It was at that moment, Aneesa said, she realized what she was doing mattered. "It didn't matter if I had 12 students and only four of them showed up consistently," Aneesa said. "I made a difference in that girl's life." For Amara, it was the combination of it all - teaching, speaking another language and taking in the local culture. "You'll learn a lot in school," Amara said "But life lessons make you who you are." Keegan Prosser: 425-453-4602 kprosser@bellevuereporter.com

BELLEVUE REPORTER
The Haggen Northwest Fresh grocery store in Crossroads will close within the next six to eight weeks. A store manager confirmed plans to liquidate the Bellevue branch of the Northwest chain. A Haggen store in Shoreline also will close. “We invested in both remodeling and rebranding, dedicating our collective resources to give these locations one last chance. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to turn these stores around,” said Clement Stevens co-president and senior vice president of marketingin a statement. “These closures enable us to free up capital and enable us to focus our efforts on our thriving stores.” The Bellevue store was remodeled in 2011. Haggen, begun in Bellingham in 1933 and later rebranded under several new banners including TOP Food and Drug, has undergone tough times in recent years. After hiring Bellevue consulting firm Hartman Group, the company attempted to rebrand its Bellevue store in 2011 into products geared more toward its Northwest clientele. “Closing stores is an extremely difficult decision, knowing that it will impact some of our valued employ-

Dunlap also added that the Economic Development Council (EDC) of Seattle helped inform Booking.com's decision to open offices in Bellevue. EDC's providing of information from demographics to economic statistics aided in the search. Booking.com is a part of Priceline, with offices in over 50 countries. In 2012 it opened a 50-person facility in Seattle. That employee base will move to Bellevue later this year. Staying out of trouble BY JOSH SUMAN BELLEVUE REPORTER
Brian Mogg is one of the state's top prep golfers and is entering his second year in the Bellevue College Running Start program. A member of the Skyline High School golf team, Mogg has made three trips to the state tournament during his time as a prep, finishing in a tie for third place
The Sand Dollar Of all the quick and handy tips Mogg has picked up working with top golf instructors from around the country, he said few are more valuable than one he uses to practice in the sand. While grounding a club in the bunker is a penalty during a round of play, it can be a useful tool when getting in some practice strokes. Let the ball find a lie in the sand and then with the head of the club, draw a pair of horizontal lines, one in front and one behind the ball, about the
size of a dollar bill. On the downstroke, try to enter the sand at the line behind and then bring the club through the ball, out of the sand on the follow-through. Mogg said it is one way to ensure consistently accurate contact with the ball. Formulate a plan It seems simple enough, but Mogg said before each hole, he plots out his ideal path down the course by first finding his trouble spots. "The first thing I look at is what side I can miss on," he said. "If there is water left, I
in 2012 and 2013 after a sixth place finish as a freshman. Mogg agreed to spend some time with The Reporter to break down the game, offer some easy-to-follow tips and provide some insight during this series, which will run throughout the summer. The first installment of the series took a look at playing with pace and patience on the green, one of the most difficult tacts for golfers of all skill levels. This time, Mogg helps explain some of the ways he stays out and gets out of trouble. want to make sure to miss right to take that out of play." Keep the hands quiet Getting the club head square, and keeping it that way through the bottom of the swing can be one of the most frustrating parts of the game. Everyone wants to be able to flex a little muscle with the driver, but Mogg said too much hand motion will cripple that plan before it begins. "The one thing I don't want is a lot of hand motion, because it gets the club opening and closing," he

said. "When you get really open on the backswing, you have to flip it over and under pressure it is a lot tougher to control." Instead of focusing on club face placement, Mogg said keeping alignment in order from the feet up to the shoulders, and keeping the hands quiet, is the key to staying out of trouble off the tee. Make some lemonade Every round of golf is guaranteed to have a few shots that find the rough or sand trap, but working out of trouble is one of the keys to dropping your score consistently. When Mogg finds himself in the sand or anywhere off the fairway, he said his first task is identification. "If I have a terrible lie, I know I just have to get it out," he said. "It doesn't have to be close, I just have to get out of trouble." Failing to recognize a bad situation can lead to an overaggressive play, but
When Brian Mogg shows up to a course, he first spends time practicing in the sand. ‘Hitting shots in the practice bunkers will help you,’ Mogg says. JOSH SUMAN, Bellevue Reporter Mogg said when the circumstances are right to go after it, don't hesitate. "If I have a good lie, I'm trying to get it as close as I can," he said. "Or even make it." Get familiar with the sand Just as is the case on the green, spending some time practicing in the sand can make all the difference. "When you show up to the course, even before you
play, hitting shots in the practice bunkers will help you," Mogg said. Also like greens, sand traps will have a different consistency and makeup depending on the course and weather. Finding out if the sand is hard, soft or sparsely distributed in the bunker can be a big advantage when trouble strikes. Josh Suman: 425-453-5045 jsuman@bellevuereporter.com

Living legacy
Heritage Corner A look at Bellevue’s past
Locally launched social media site honors those who've passed BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTER
A new social media site launched in part by founder and CEO Michael Rowell of Efinancial in Bellevue, will offer a platform to honor the deceased. LifeStory.com, though still in a pilot stage of design, features profiles of family members, loved ones and celebrities who have passed away. “It offers a way to move these stories forward, to share with other people and to allow peoples' legacies to live on,” says Shalonne Foster, marketing manager of LifeStory.com. In its current stage, the site looks a lot like Pinterest. Users can create profiles that are private or public and invite family members or friends to contribute content ranging from old pictures to stories to favorite quotes. Foster gives the example of her grandmother, who passed away when
she was 6 years-old. Though she never knew her, a site like LifeStory.com would offer an opportunity to do so through posted memories, journal entries, even favorite recipes. “In some ways people can use it as a memorial page. Others as a visual scrapbook,” says Foster. “In my case as a digital cookbook with recipes passed down.” “We're not cookers,” she laughs, “and this would be a great place for me to have my aunt or others share [recipes].” The idea for the site came into being late last year and Foster says there's nothing else like it. Rowell was inspired in part by the passing of Steve Jobs, a man he says inspired him greatly, but whose death he didn't know how to grieve. “There are a lot of places to get out there and to talk about yourself – Face-

Mattress fire in downtown causes $65,000 in damages
What is It?
A mattress fire Tuesday morning in a downtown apartment tower, combined with water damage from the building’s sprinkler system, displaced residents of 15 apartments. At 10:44 a.m. a fire was reported on the ninth floor of the Elements Too high-rise on the 900 block of 112th Avenue Northeast. Firefighters arrived in three minutes, and made their way to the ninth floor. They discovered smoke in the hallway and called in a“second alarm.” After breaching the apartment door, firefighters discovered that fire had consumed the majority of a mattress in a bedroom. Thebuilding’s sprinkler system kept the fire from spreading to other units. The fire was extinguished by 11 a.m. The sprinkler system caused water damage to a total of 15 apartments, starting on the ninth floor and spreading to five floors below the involvedapartment. The estimated damage to the building is $65,000. The cause of the fire has been determined to be discarded smoking material into a wastebasket spreading to the mattress. No residents or firefighters were injured in the fire.
Canvas water bags like this one are still used today by hikers and campers for the storage and transportation of water on trips. But another forgotten use was by motorists, to transport water as a radiator coolant for cars, most often those making cross country trips or regular desert commutes in the 1920s and '30s. The rope at the top would be used to hang the bag outside of the car, or sometimes on the radiator cover. The wind blew the evaporating water off of the bag and into the radiator, which helped to keep the car from overheating. This process is called evaporating cooling. This bag seals with a cork. This bag was made by J.C. Higgins. The text on the bag once read “J.C. Higgins, Our own trademark, keeps water cooler and fresher, J.C. Higgins Sporting Goods are sold only by Sears Roebuck & Co. 2 gallon capacity, imported, lay flat, presoaking speeds water cooling.” The J.C. Higgins sporting goods brand was sold at Sears from 1908-1963. Heritage Corner is a feature in the Bellevue Reporter. Construction crews install dowel bars the weekend of July 13-14 to what will become the new left lanes of I-405 in Bellevue before the concrete is poured. The project is replacing pavement that is 40 to 50 years old and has many cracks bumps and ruts. The dowel bars mark a separation between panels but tie them together. This helps prevent the new panels from rocking back and forth as vehicles drive over them. More panel replacement work will be performed Aug. 10-11 with an around-the-clock closure of northbound I-405 from Southeast Eighth Street to SR 520. When construction is done drivers will experience a smoother ride with improved traction. Extending the life of the pavement also frees up WSDOT crews to work on other essential repair and maintenance tasks. COURTESY PHOTO, Washington Department

Former real estate developer, girlfriend convicted of tax evasion
switch today and be $200 richer for it
A former western Washington real estate developer and his long-time girlfriend, both with a Bellevue connection, were convicted July 31 in U.S. District Court in Seattle of 25 counts of tax evasion and false statements related to their scheme to avoid paying taxes on more than $23 million in income. Winston Bontrager, 64, and Pauline Anderson, 65, were indicted in March 2012, and have been in federal custody since June 2012. For Bontrager, it is a second conviction for tax crimes and third federal criminal conviction. Some of the convictions returned this week are for Bontrager's false statements surrounding his failure to pay more than $687,000 in restitution from his prior conviction. During the trial prosecutors detailed how Bontrager and Anderson filed false tax returns from 2004-2009, failing to report more than $23 million in income and failing to pay more than $2.7 million in taxes. Over $10 million was moved into foreign bank accounts in Anderson's name, T:10”
and virtually all of the couples’ assets were put in Anderson's name in order to hide it from the IRS and those seeking to enforce Bontrager's restitution obligation and collect delinquent taxes. At the same time that the couple paid little in income taxes, they purchased a luxury condominium in Bellevue and spent approximately $500,000 on an extensive remodel for a total of $1.24 million. They owned a $325,000 wine collection, a $1.2 million home in Southern California, a 6.7 carat diamond ring, a Bentley worth $186,000, and they spent more than $3.4 million in credit card purchases, including travel, cosmetic surgery, cosmetic dentistry, restaurants, and clothing and shoes. The tax crimes of conviction are each punishable by between three to five years in prison, and the false statement convictions are also punishable by up to five years in prison. Bontrager was convicted of nine tax counts and eight counts of making false statements. Anderson was convicted of 11 tax counts.

said. “And I’ve had some really great learning experiences.” Founded in 1966 as the Imperial Drum and Bugle Corps, Music Works Northwest is a nonprofit community school dedicated to providing accessible music education and experiences to people on the Eastside. The school, which provides lessons in more than 21 instruments, hosts approximately 400 students per week. In the summer, an additional 200 students participate in summer camps. But, most notable, is how they’ve been able to operate, and with such success, for so long. “I think it’s the conglomeration of faculty and students,” said Scott Ketron, who serves as the director for Education Programs and Community Outreach at the school. “The fact that we can have professionals, adult amateurs and kids all playing in the same room [gives us] the ability to offer unique programming.” Ketron, who has played professionally in a number of symphonies and teaches percussion at the school, has been involved at Music Works since 1991. “We’ve got hot shots here,” said Karen Nestvold, development manager for the school. The teachers, music therapists and ensemble directors have strong academic credentials and are among the Puget Sound region’s most active and sought after performers. Faculty members have undergraduate and graduate degrees from prestigious institutions including the Julliard School, the Eastman School of Music and Berklee College of Music, among others. In addition to its musical offerings, Music Works Northwest continues to turn heads for it’s expanding music therapy program. Introduced by Dr. Carleen Brown when the school relocated to Southeast Eastgate Way in 1998, the program uses

BAM ARTSfair draws big crowd, talented artists BY LINDA BALL REPORTER NEWSPAPERS
Artists came from as close as Seattle to as far away as the United Kingdom to take part in the BAM (Bellevue Arts Museum) Artsfair July 26-28 at Bellevue Square. This is a blind juried art show. A panel selected the artists for the show by looking at photos of their work, without knowing their name. There were jewelers, painters, textile artists, woodworkers, pottery artists, photographers and even a clockmaker. Douglas Chalk, his wife and his wife’s sister are the creative hands behind Clever Clocks. Unlike any clocks you’ve ever seen, many incorporate geometric designs that line up at only certain hours. Framed in poplar wood, Chalk’s clocks were drawing a big crowd. “We make 120 clocks a week,” he said. At the event, one customer bought three of each clock he had on display. Nicario Jimenez must be a very patient man, judging by the intricate work in his Retablos, a Peruvian art form. He creates colorful narratives with little figurines made from boiled potatoes and Plaster of Paris. Jimenez now lives in Naples, Fla., but one of his pieces is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution. He said this was his fourth time at BAM Artsfair. Gina Freuen of Spokane has been participating in this show since 1985. Her one-of-akind stoneware was selling well. “So far I’ve got my expenses covered,” Freuen said. Woodworkers and furniture makers were well represented. Michael Hamilton of Boise,
Idaho, has been creating custom wood designs for 30 years. His boxes and display cabinets also are available at Northwest Woodworkers Gallery in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Austin Heitzman, a furniture maker from Portland, also has his work represented at Northwest Woodworkers Gallery. “I get a lot of traffic at this show,” Heitzman said. He said he works with whatever wood he can get his hands on. On display was a jewelry armoire he made from the wood of a rhododendron, with legs made from Port Orford Cedar. Another furniture maker, Steve Henneford from Lakeshore, Mont., displayed an unusual rocker-recliner made from walnut and leather. Henneford offered Sammamish A close-up of one of the Retablos by Peruvian artist Nicario Jimenez. They are brightly colored figurines City Councilmember Don arranged into narrative scenes. Staelens said another important aspect of the jazz program is to teach students what the music business is all about. “The goal is to make [the New School of Jazz] a college prep school for kids wanting to go on in music,” Staelens said. From that original group of eight students, four went on to pursue degrees in music – at The New School in New York City, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, The University of Oregon and Central Washington University. The program now includes a fluctuating number of jazz ensembles, as well as lessons in specific instruments such as piano and Rio Style guitar. This fall, Staelens hopes to create two or three Honors Jazz Ensembles as well as a small vocal ensemble. “Vocal part of jazz is also really important,” Staelens said. Looking into the future, Staelens hopes to build a jazz choir at Music Works.

Yet the school’s biggest achievement may be the lasting impressions its staff and faculty continue to make. It’s for this reason, past students, like professional pianist Aaron Parks, continue to stay in touch. Parks most recently stopped by the school to teach a master class during the Bellevue Jazz Festival. Staelens adds that he’s stayed in touch with several students, many of whom have invited him to their college concerts across the country. For Gott, who participates in a number of ensemble groups, the positive experience has meant continued instruction at Music Works. “With Music Works, there’s always an opportunity to continue learning,” Gott said. “And with improv you can always push yourself. State files complaint against Bellevue insurance agent BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTERT
The Attorney General's Office on Monday filed suit against a Bellevue insurance agent and two business partners alleged to have taken advantage of more than 30 victims by cheating them out of thousands of dollars. Many of the victims are reported to be widows, over 80-years-old. Defendants Henry William Dailey, Janet Sparks and Deborah Higgins of TEAM Services LLC and TEAM Insurance Services LLC, partly based in Bellevue, sold reverse mortgages, annuities and living trusts to senior citizens, often cultivating relationships with the victims first, by making repeated visits to their homes to build trust. “It is deplorable to prey on our most vulnerable consumers,” said
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson. “It appears the defendants abused seniors' trusting nature to maximize their commissions at their victims' expense.” The defendants are believed to have convinced seniors to take out reverse mortgages or refinance an existing reverse mortgage to extract the maximum amount of the seniors' home equity. A reverse mortgage is a loan for senior homeowners that uses as collateral, the home's equity. Afterward the defendants visited with their victims to encourage them to invest in annuity products, promising to improve their financial status. Many victims later complained of forged signatures and of false information on the annuity applications, which the defendants are alleged to have included to ensure approval by

insurance companies. The defendants who are not licensed investment advisors or attorneys, employed other schemes like selling living trusts advising them to liquidate stocks and to reinvest annuities in other insurance companies after about a year, causing their victims to lose thousands of dollars in penalties. According to a press release by the ATG, the complaint is being issued because of the defendants' lack of disclosure about their services and products, and their duplicitous behavior, not because the individual products were illegal. “Defendants abused the seniors' trusting nature and lack of sophistication regarding complex financial products to maximize their sales and commissions at their victim's expense,” reads the complaint.
Historic tall ships return to Carillon Point A taste of life on the high seas is headed this way as two historic ships dock in Kirkland, including one used in the 2003 film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Both vessels will be moored at Carillon Point from Aug. 27 to Sept. 2. The Lady Washington may be better known to movie buffs as the HMS Interceptor from the first film in the Disney “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy. In the film, Capt. Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, steals the Interceptor with the help of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). When not playing a role in the movies, the Lady Washington is the official ship of the state of Washington. The vessel is a full-scale reproduction of the original Lady Washington, the first American vessel to reach the West coast in 1788. The modern version, 112 feet in length, was constructed in Aberdeen by master shipwrights. The second ship is a topsail ketch, Hawaiian Chieftain, a replica of a typical European merchant trader popular during the late 19th century. Built in 1998, it was originally designed for cargo trade. A full schedule of public dockside tours, evening sails and battle sails (family-friendly or adults-only) will be

under the age of 17 (or their parents). They assessed the range and extent of sibling aggression, looking at measures like physical assault, with and without a weapon or injury; property aggression, like stealing something from the child with or without force, or breaking a sibling’s things on purpose; and psychological bullying such as saying things to make the child feel bad, scared or not wanted. Mental health also was assessed. The results showed that sibling aggression was associated with significantly worse mental health and distress was evident even in cases of mild sibling aggression. The data also found that sibling and peer bullying had very similar negative effects on mental wellbeing. It can take time for parents to distinguish between normal sibling arguing and aggression or bullying behavior – after all, some kids have a short fuse, especially if there are other stresses at home or in school. Things to watch for include a child who sees himself as less than others, or one sibling who always seems at fault while the other is usually the “good kid.” Reddish recommends working with the perceived “victim” and helping the child express how certain words or actions make her or him feel. The more concrete a child can be at verbalizing, the better he or she will be at resolving conflict. It’s also beneficial to let the aggressive sibling understand how words or actions impact or hurt a brother or sister. And when there is trouble or an argument, give consequences to every child who was involved. Finally, one of the biggest things parents can do is look out for how they model relationships. If there is a lot of contempt between partners or ex-partners it can cause a child to see hurtful conflict as a normal part of relationships.

iblings fight, sometimes a lot; there is nothing new about that. But a new study released by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that being picked on by a brother or sister can be harmful to a child’s mental health, resulting in increased anger, depression and anxiety in the victimized child. Kirsten Reddish, a counselor with Youth Eastside Services, has worked with families where sibling bullying is a big problem. “Since it’s often an older sibling picking on a younger one, the younger child is at a disadvantage because he or she doesn’t have the skills to deflect the aggression or express Patti Skeltonwhat’s going on – except to act out, often in McGougan ways that aren’t helpful.” Because identity formation is a big part of ‘tween and teen years, bullying can shape a child’s self-image. Children who are bullied often take on a victim mentality that makes them feel “less than” the sibling doing the bullying. This can really deflate self-esteem. Conversely, sibling relationships that are close and nurturing have been found to play an important role in developing a child’s ability to relate to peers and resolve conflict, as well as his or her social and emotional intelligence. In the study, researchers interviewed more than 3,500 kids

You might find him snuggled under a blanket because he can be a little shy at first, but once you find his sweet spot under his chin, you will have all his love and attention. Fawn is a sweet 1-year-old Terrier mix with beautiful soft brown eyes. This little girl is as friendly as can be and just can’t wait to greet you with tail wags and puppy kisses. She would love to spend the day cuddled up next to you. Both are at the Seattle Humane Society in Bellevue, located at the intersection of I-405 and I-90. It is open seven days a week from noon to 6 p.m. For directions call 425-641-0080. Baby is a 10-year-old female, domestic short hair that loves people and attention. If ignored for too long, she may give a gentle swat or love bite. She’s not being mean – she just wants you to love on her more. However, for this reason, Baby would do best in a home with kids 12 years and older. She is litter box trained, spayed, and current on vaccinations. Baby is available at the King County Pet Adoption Center in Kent, located at 21615 64th Ave S. Adoption hours: 3-6 p.m.

For Dental Implant Treatment, it’s a ClearChoice! ClearChoice team of specialists brings you a dental implant solution that fits your budget ... in just one day!* A LEADER IN DENTAL IMPLANT TREATMENT Virtually every adult will lose a tooth, and as we get older, more Americans will suffer with missing and failing teeth. These days, however, there are dental implant solutions that either didn’t exist in the past or which were difficult to access. But now, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers are leading the way in innovative dental implant treatments. Dental Implants are a permanent solution for dental problems. And now your treatment, from our team of specialists, can often be accomplished in just one day *… and without the need for additional bone graft surgeries. In fact, dental implants can last a lifetime and have become the treatment of choice for replacement of missing and failing teeth. With more than 10,000 dental implant procedures performed, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers have become a leader in dental implant treatment delivery. TECHNOLOGY Every ClearChoice Dental Implant Center includes an on-site 3D CAT Scan. The 3D CAT Scan technology costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. This technology provides three-dimensional and crosssectional views that allow ClearChoice doctors to examine the quality and density of the bone that will anchor the dental implants; select the correct type and size of implants; determine the precise placement of implants, and avoid the nerves and sinuses. Since every smile is custom designed, each ClearChoice Center has a specialized Dental Implant in-house lab to custom make your smile.
They said they had specialists, a lab, and high tech equipment all at one location, but I had no idea that they could really do all of this in just one day!*

Actual ClearChoice Patient TEAM OF SPECIALISTS
The technology alone cannot elevate ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers in their field. Our technology is paired with an expert professional team of doctor specialists enabling ClearChoice to empower so many patients around the country to change their lives. These qualified specialists include an oral surgeon who places implants, and a prosthodontist who designs your custom new smile. Each of the doctors has special expertise and can be trusted to deliver your high quality implant care. Dental Implants are a surgical procedure and the ClearChoice doctors have extensive experience in this area including administering anesthesia to provide comfort. Custom fabrication of the patient’s new smile and replacement teeth are accomplished by trained lab technicians in the on-site dental implant lab. Our local specialists are available for a FREE initial consultation or even second opinions. Why wait, call now! SATISFACTION Whether for a missing single tooth, multiple teeth or a whole mouthful of missing or failing teeth, ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers provide comprehensive implant treatment professionally and affordably in a fraction of the time it would take many other professionals. That’s why in an independent study of thousands of patients, ClearChoice patients would overwhelmingly recommend ClearChoice to others†.
