Tacoma to host major tourism conference Posted online Tues., July 30 Local tourism officials announced Monday Tacoma will host the 2014 Go West Summit, a four-day conference scheduled for Feb. 24-27, 2014, that is expected to bring more than 150 international and domestic tour operators, as well as 200 tourism suppliers from the western United States, to the Pierce County area. "This is an incredible opportunity for the local and state economy and travel industry to emphasize the assets and amenities of the Pacific Northwest," said Tacoma Regional Convention + Visitor Bureau (TRCVB) president and CEO Bennish Brown. The TRCVB partnered with the City of Tacoma, Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center (GTCTC) and Hotel Murano to submit a proposal to host the 2014 Go West Summit in Tacoma. Eleven tourism organizations attended a welcome dinner for representatives to differentiate Pierce County as a host destination and showcase Washington's support of the conference. Tourism organizations that attended the dinner included the TRCVB, Hotel Murano, Olympia Peninsula, Washington Tourism Alliance, Washington State Destination Marketing Organization, Visit Seattle, Visit Spokane, Visit Rainier, Visit Vancouver USA, Seattle Southside and Yakima Valley. "Collaboration with statewide partners helped Pierce County secure Go West 2014," added Brown. Pierce County cities such as Tacoma and Lakewood will prepare for the Go West Summit over the next six months. The TRCVB is working with area restaurants, attractions and surrounding cities to plan evening receptions and experiential activities for conference attendees such as five Adventure Day tours that will highlight Mount Rainier National Park and the glass art and collector vehicle culture in Tacoma. "The county has so much to gain from hosting the Summit, particularly within the international travel industry," said City of Lakewood economic development manager Ellie Chambers-Grady. According to a Go West Summit survey, over $14.5 million worth of contracts were signed on the show floor during this year's conference in Fort Worth, Texas, and the conference is expected to bring more than 6.2 million visitors over 18 months. The Go West Summit aims to bring together suppliers and international and U.S.-based tour operators to to generate tourism business in the western United States. Pierce County completes final phase of Tacoma Narrows Airport project Posted online Mon., July 29 Photo Courtesy Pierce County The runway at Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor reopened Sunday after being closed for 10 nights for the final phase of its rehabilitation. Crews grooved the runway for improved traction and applied final markings to the runway and connector taxiways. During earlier phases of the rehabilitation, which started April 29, crews reduced the width of the runway, added new signage, and repaved the runway, among other improvements. The runway’s width was reduced from 150 feet to the Federal Aviation Administration’s standard of 100 feet for airports of this type. The runway length remains at 5,002 feet. Cracks were sealed and repaired, and four inches of asphalt overlay created a new surface. The runway is now crowned at the center for improved drainage. Additional project highlights include a new drainage system along the runway and connector taxiways, new runway markings and signage, and improved lighting. The taxiways were reduced to 50 feet, down from a varied width of 75 to 120 feet. The runway has not been repaved since it was built more than 50 years ago. The rehabilitation cost approximately $5.7 million, including $5.2 million in FAA grants, a $326,000 Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) grant, $135,236 in Washington State Department of Transportation Aviation grants, and $95,160 in county airport funds. The project was eligible for the DOE grant due to the drainage improvements that were made

to enhance water quality. WHPacific designed the project, and Tucci and Sons, Inc. was the general contractor. Additional information is available online at piercecountywa.org/tacomanarrows.

CITY OF FIRCREST NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION AND PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING The City of Fircrest has issued a De-­ termination of Nonsignificance/Adop-­ tion of Existing Documents/Addendum for the 2013 Amendments to the Fir-­ crest Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Map. The City has determined that the proposals do not have a probable sig-­ nificant adverse impact on the envi-­ ronment. An environmental impact statement (EIS) is not required for ei-­ ther proposal under RCW 43.21C.030(2)(c). These decisions were made after review of a complet-­ ed environmental checklist and other information on file with the lead agen-­ cy. This information is available to the public on request. The deadline for submitting written comments on, or an appeal of, the SEPA determination is August 14, 2013. The Fircrest Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on August 20, 2013, commencing at 6:00 pm or shortly thereafter, to consider amend-­ ments to the City’s Comprehensive
