I-90 bridge closures this Friday-Sunday This Friday through Sunday the Interstate 90 floating bridge will close for the Patriots Jet performances as part of Seafair. The bridge will be closed from 1:15 to 2:40 p.m. Aug. 2-4. The bridge will be closed to all vehicles between I-5 to Island Crest Way. On-ramps between I-5 and Island Cresty Way will begin to close 30 minutes before the performace.

An antique Remington .41 caliber Derringer pistol, stolen during a South end burglary in the late 1960s has resurfaced more than 2,500 miles away in Cleveland, Tennessee, 45 years after it was taken. The gun was stolen on March 8, 1968 from a house on north side of Pioneer Park, in the 8600 block of S.E. 63rd Street. The gun belonged to a couple who were in their 40s at the time, Chester and Dorothy Cook, who are now both deceased. After the theft, Mercer Island

In an effort to better manage parking at its regional Park & Ride lots, Sound Transit will begin a pilot program to test charging for parking at its lots next year. The agency currently manages more than 13,000 parking spaces throughout the region. Despite that big number, hundreds of commuters find parking facilities full each morning. As the regional transit system expands to meet regional population and employment growth, Sound Transit expects the demand for park-andride spaces to be even greater. On July 18, the Sound Transit Board approved a 2014 pilot program to test ways to allocate parking.

For three years, the Mercer Island Lion’s club has stored the trailer and equipment they use to sell Christmas trees every year at the old Boys and Girls Club on East Mercer Way. Now, with just two weeks notice, they have been asked to find a new home for it. Islander and Lion’s club member, Milt Yanicks said he has appealed to Mayor Bassett and the city for help. “Our club needs at least a temporary place to keep the trailer until we can find a place to store it,” he said. “We have been given a two

Some years ago the club bought the trailer to store their equipment and to have a space for workers to take care of paperwork and warm up during the sale. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund youth scholarships and other community needs and activities. The equipment trailer is 40-feet long plus tongue length and 11 feet at the widest point. The club rents a truck and driver to move the trailer to and from the Farmers lot. Islanders with a location or ideas for at least a temporary home for the trailer, are asked to contact Yanicks at 232-8096, or Lions Club President, Wolfgang Mueller at 425301-0144.
Three other guns were also stolen, including a .25 caliber Colt, .38 caliber pistol and another Remington .41 caliber Derringer. A coin collection was taken along with several boxes of ammunition. The thieves also took the time to pull out the air cleaner from a 1955 unlicensed red Thunderbird convertible stored in the garage. Perhaps what is most interesting is what was not taken. The police report listed the items left behind; There was a “very valuable stamp collection that was left intact” and “a chest full of various rifles” that had been left untouched. The liquor cabinet had been opened but no bottles were missing. “Throughout the house, all the closets had been gone through, but articles such as portable radios, tape recorders, cameras or silver were left intact,” the report said. The thieves left through
a pair of glass sliding doors, south toward Pioneer Park. The sliding door was found off its track. A bulb in a light over the driveway had been unscrewed. Police checked with neighbors who reported they did not see or hear anything. Contacted last week, Susan Cook Delzell, the
daughter of the couple, who now lives in Pennsylvania, says her memory of any burglary is hazy. “I don’t recall specifically anything about a burglary,” she said. “I was away at college over in Walla Walla.” “I do believe my dad had a gun collection at the house,” she said.

According to Metro, features of the pilot program will also include improved rideshare management, monitoring real-time parking availability, and program evaluation. Metro plans to communicate with riders before and during the pilot program planned to start next year.

When Rebecca Laws Nemetz moved to Mercer Island from North Carolina, she brought her Pilates studio with her. 5 Elements Fitness, the new Pilates studio along the Sunset Highway, is smaller than Nemetz’s former Raleigh location, Studio @ Hargett, which she operated for five years. But it is much more manageable, she said. Nemetz’s husband — and his job at Amazon — brought them here. “Our population in the Washington area is so active that I’m finding a lot of people with injuries or rehabilitating injuries, and Pilates is perfect for that,” Nemetz said. Pilates is named for Joseph Pilates, a German who rehabilitated wounded World War I soldiers. Equipment ranges from the Reformer, Cadillac and Orbit, to a Tower, Wunda chair, TRX and stability balls. It’s all about stretching — whether your hamstring,

The studio’s “five elements” are strength, balance, core, flexibility and energy. Nemetz has eight certifications and has also taught yoga. Both individual and group classes are offered. The average age range is
40-60, with some people in their 70s, and the majority are women. The studio has one additional instructor, Barbara DeVault. ets imagine how it will be to get to work or school or the doctor from the south end of Mercer Island in let’s say, three years time. The operative word might be, ‘challenging.’ The failure of the 2013 Legislature to pass a $10 billion transportation package will leave many roads and bridges in need of repair, fewer buses on the roads and more uncertainty about the future or our state’s economy. It is ugly from every angle. But lets just look at Metro for a moment. Metro says plans to cut bus service by 17 percent could take effect next year. Even those who do not use bus service will feel the effect of cuts — even if the routes eliminated are in places far from here. Fewer buses will mean more cars on the roads at peak hours. Commute times will certainly increase as the population in our region continues to grow. And a new wrinkle in all of this seems to be about to appear. Metro is planning a pilot study next year to see if charging commuters to park at four busy park and rides (including Issaquah’s) in the region, can work. The agency will investigate how much to charge based on whether the vehicle is used to carpool or by the time of day, etc. Those who purchase a permit to park will be guaranteed a place to park. So, the Island Park and Ride is already at capacity. If such an idea becomes reality, how will parking there be allocated? Anecdotal evidence indicates that many Eastside commuters already skip lots closer to home to come to the Island instead. It will help when the new SR 520 bridge opens to traffic in 2014 or 2015. But the work needed on routes that feed into the new bridge, is not yet funded. In addition, Sound Transit will begin construction on the tracks for light rail in the existing center lanes of Interstate 90 right-of-way. The HOV center lanes will be shut down by the end of 2016 for the duration of construction, planned to end in 2023. The new HOV lanes constructed on the outer lanes are to pick up most but probably not all of that traffic. So life will change. We will adapt. It won’t all happen at once. But, we’d better start walking now.

City construction season underway By Reporter Staff
The City’s two major road construction projects this summer are the 2013 Arterial and Residential Street Asphalt Overlays and the 2013 Arterial and Residential Chip Seal. Here is their current status:
‘Chip Seal’ work This work will occur on Mercerwood Drive from Gallagher Hill all the way down to East Mercer Way. The city is also "chip sealing" S.E. 40th Street from 96th Ave S.E. to the 9700 block (this is the residential piece of 40th), and 81st, 82nd, and 83rd Avenues near Homestead Field. Construction work on this project began a couple of weeks ago with some storm drainage repairs and street patching, which have wrapped up. Last Friday, the City’s contractor, Doolittle Construction "pre-sealed" the new patched areas and conducted other preparatory work. The chip seal was to be placed on the on these roadways on Monday and Tuesday, July 29 and 30. Most of these roads will receive a double chip seal—one each day. There will be flaggers out to direct traffic. Contractors will also be sweeping all the roads each day which may generate some noise and dust. By today, all the chips should be down and the roads will look like they are gravel. The contractor will then return the week of Aug. 5 to fog seal all of the chip areas. This fog seal-

ing applies a top coating of asphalt to the chip seal to help with chip adhesion and also will give the road an even black color. This process will require closing one side of the roads to traffic to allow the fog seal to dry. Again, driving delays will result, some driving around the block, and lots of flaggers and cones to keep cars off the wet oil. A couple of weeks after the fog sealing we will install the permanent striping. The city mailed flyers about the projects to all homes in the vicinity of the chip sealing work.
Pavement overlays This project involves “hot mix” overlays of several areas of the Island: West Mercer Way from SE 24th to SE 28th streets; and 80th Ave from S.E. 27th to S.E, 28th Streets in the Town Center; the Parkwood neighborhood (east of Island Crest Way across from Island Park Elementary), and two other small residential streets. Work on this road contract is beginning with the Parkwood neighborhood. The city is also repairing curbs and storm drain pipe repairs. The City’s contractor, Lakeside Industries, has scheduled repaving work for the week of Aug. 5. This work will include mass removal of the existing pavement down to base rock, and repaving with hot mix asphalt. Most of those areas will get two paving courses. Lakeside hopes to get most if not all of the paving done the second week of August. Again, there will be flaggers, equipment, and lots of dump trucks in the area.

News briefs BPA to raise power and transmission rates to utilities The federal agency, the Bonneville Power Administration, announced its intention to raise wholesale power rates to its utility customers in two ways. First it has adopted a 9 percent average wholesale power rate increase and an 11 percent average transmission rate increase. These rate increases to utilities such as Puget Sound Energy, will in part, be passed through to customers in retail electricity rates. The transmission rate is the amount of money charged to utilities for the use of the agency’s high voltage transmission system. The new rates take effect Oct. 1, 2013. For Bonneville’s utility power customers, the wholesale power rate increase will be an average of 9 percent higher than current rates. The power rate increase stems from higher costs to operate and maintain the federal hydroelectric system, and to fund existing longterm agreements for the fish and wildlife mitigation program and reduced revenues from surplus power sales due to low market prices. An average of $20 million per year in financial reserves will be used to offset part of the rate increase.
PSE offers chance to win solar system Puget Sound Energy’s Green Power Program is continuing this summer, and
one lucky winner will win a one kilowatt solar energy system. PSE’s Green Power Program is a voluntary program which allows PSE electric customers a way to guarantee that some or all of the energy they use is matched in the power grid by clean energy from wind, solar, biogas and other sources. The sweepstakes enrollment period ends Sept. 30. The solar energy system is estimated at $10,000. Customers who already participate at 100 percent will be automatically entered to win. New state laws A set of new laws are in effect for Washington as of July 1. Here are the highlights: • Electronic Proof of Driver’s Insurance: Drivers in Washington will now be able to use their smartphones to prove they have insurance when they get pulled over. • Privacy: Employers cannot demand passwords for social media sites like Facebook at the workplace from employees.

Liquor, beer and wine: Farmers markets that meet certain requirements will be able to feature wine and beer tasting. Also, movie theaters with less 120 seats per screen will be allowed to obtain a liquor license. Finally, lawmakers passed a measure to ensure that grocery stores using selfcheckout machines check people’s identification when they purchase alcohol.

Initiative 594, the Criminal Background Checks Initiative is simple. It makes sure everyone in Washington State passes the same background check, no matter where they buy the gun and no matter whom they buy it from. Criminal and public safety background checks dramatically reduce access to guns for criminals, domestic abusers and other dangerous people from buying firearms. Federal law only requires background checks for gun sales at licensed dealers. In the U.S., an estimated 40 percent of gun transfers take place without going through a licensed dealer, including online sales and at gun shows. That means that in 2012, 6.6 million guns were sold with no background check for the buyer.
Criminals and other prohibited gun buyers know how to exploit this loophole, and they do. A national survey of inmates found that nearly 80 percent of those who used a handgun in a crime acquired it in a private transfer. The Criminal Background Checks Initiative closes this loophole in Washington State by requiring that private sales and transfers—including those at gun shows or sales via the internet— go through the same background check process as sales through a licensed gun dealer. Initiative 591 would limit new restrictions A coalition of gunrights groups have filed an alternative to stricter controls on guns with Initiative 591, which would prevent Washington state from adopting background-check laws more restrictive than the federal standard. Supplying hope to Sierra Leone Jason McRuer has gathered school supplies for students in Sierra Leone

Most high school kids aren't preoccupied with the state of education resources in a foreign country. But that doesn't go for 16-yearold Jason McRuer. The Mercer Island High School junior recently spearheaded a project to collect gently used and left-over school supplies and send them to students in Sierra Leone. McRuer launched his venture in February on Kickstarter, a popular website that allows enterprisers to utilize crowd-funding to help advance their projects. McRuer needed to raise $750 to pay for shipping the supplies overseas by his deadline of April 1, but has since surpassed his goal and received $836 in contributions. In addition to sending school materials to struggling students in 'Salone,' part of McRuer's plan involves putting together a calendar comprised of artwork made by the Sierra Leonean students receiving the supplies. He will send these calendars to the backers who helped support his cause, as well thank you letters and some 'amazing Karma.' Though McRuer has a contact in Sierra Leone to assist him with the overseas distribution of supplies, he has consistently worked throughout the previous school year to raise awareness about his project— sending out fliers to Mercer Island elementary school

For 30 years, Youth Theatre Northwest (YTN) has nurtured the artistic talents of youth from across the Puget Sound region. After three decades, many YTN alumni have matured into accomplished and venerable artists, working at respected theatres, schools

When asked what drove him to embark on this endeavor, McRuer says that he simply 'saw that there were a lot of supplies that were being wasted, and there was a lot that was needed over there. It seemed like a pretty easy trade.' Explaining on his Kickstarter page the negative ramifications of the ten-year civil war in Sierra Leone for the local youths, McRuer says, ‘I want to help because there are kids out there that are so eager to learn, and are only weighed down by what is lacking in their resources, and not in their motivation.’ McRuer explains his venture was in part inspired
by fellow MIHS student Kendall Fagan’s altruistic endeavor, Help Educ8, which sold school supplies to Mercer Islanders and donated the proceeds to charity. ‘I really looked to him and that project,’ McRuer says. Juggling the project with his participation in cross country, band, drama and the VOICE program (Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere), it’s an understatement to say that McRuer is a busy 16-year-old. When prompted about any future involvement in philanthropy, McRuer predicts that he will not only continue his project, but further his connection to Sierra Leone with a trip to the area in coming years. ‘It’s hard not seeing the kids receiving the supplies at the other end, but I’ve definitely gotten a lot out of it.’

Mercer Islanders complete BRI Seafair triathlon Sunday, July 21 By Megan Managan

Part of the annual Seafair traditions includes the BRI triathlon, which this year took place on July 21 and started at Seward Park. Many Islanders took part in the event, including several kids racing in the annual swimming event. The Olympic distance included 311 finishers with 190 men and 121 women, while the sprint distance included 627 racers, 306 were male and 321 were female. With the wide variety of experience levels, the Mercer Island coach said her challenge is finding the right balance and helping everyone achieve their goals. “My challenge is just that, being able to cover the full range, having three lanes of swimmers and yet everyone from someone who is still working on stroke basics to an accomplished swimmer who is trying to keep going with their workout and not have it interrupted,” said the coach. “It’s just being able to manage the different ability levels and different goals. I do have my team, my Club Emerald team, has been immensely helpful in coming out and helping me when I need extra coaches and when I haven’t been able to be at practice. They’ve been very helpful in just facilitating a smooth practice. It’s so rewarding.” Because there is an overarching mission behind the team, Pietila said each practice – there are two team practices a week – the team has a mission moment,
encouraging team members with one of the diseases or a family member to speak about their experience. “We try to do a mission moment each practice, whether it’s having someone come and speak from outside the group or someone on the team speak about how they’ve dealt with the disease,” said Pietila. “When the lady from Montana came her son spoke about Camp Oasis. We try to keep it ever present, why we’re doing this.” Wodzin said about five team members this season are patients with the disease, and two have children suffering. Another three or four came to the cause simply looking for a way to get active and give back. “We have a really strong mission oriented team,” said Wodzin. “I think there are only a couple who came in who are doing it because they want to a triathlon for a good cause.” While Pietila said many people get scared away from triathlons because of the swim or the equipment, she is there every step of the way, calming nerves and anxiety. Throughout the season they practice each step, eventually stringing the three pieces together. Each team member has a personalized training program, allowing them to get better at their strong points, and work on weaknesses.

Mercer Island soccer players help team to finals at tournament in Denmark Three Mercer Island eighth grade soccer players recently helped their team advance to the finals during a tournament in Denmark. Jennifer Bernardez, Paige Robertson and Jocelyn Thomson are members of the Benson soccer team, which traveled to Denmark to play in the Gothia Cup. The Gothia Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in the world, with over 35,000 players competing from 75 countries. On their way to the finals, the team beat others team from Norway, Denmark and the U.S. Throughout the tournament, they gave up zero goals and lost in the championship game that went to penalty kicks. Little Britches Bakery offers ‘cakes’ and more for babies Business dedicated to more than just the bottom line By Rebecca Mar

Little Britches Bakery started with a wave of babies. Many of Megan Coppersmith Szerwo’s friends were having kids, and when she saw a twotiered diaper cake in a Seattle boutique, she had all the inspiration that she needed. Since its beginning four years ago, Little Britches Bakery has been a homebased, part-time business on the Island’s First Hill. Szerwo and her husband, Brandon, live in the house that once belonged to her grandmother, who now lives in Covenant Shores. The couple has two cats adopted from a shelter, Madison and Jackson. While Szerwo’s bakery does not turn out edible treats, it offers baby gifts that look like delectable desserts. Orders are all handmade. Szerwo is employed full-time in a communications role with the City of Seattle IT Department, and has been married for 1 ½ years. Her husband picked out her ring the day before Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement
was announced, and then proposed to Szerwo a month later. The ring, as it turned out, was a sapphire resembling Kate’s ring. During the past two weeks, Szerwo has seen a surge in baby showers — 10 total. 2nd Quarter Market Recap THE MARKET: We have now had 18 months where listing numbers on Mercer Island have been at or near ten year lows. The greater Seattle market has been suffering with low inventory for about the same period. Average listing prices have fallen slightly while median listing prices are up about 14%. The asking prices of pending properties are down slightly for average prices and up slightly for median prices. Supply and demand on the Island still favors the sellers. Of course the most telling statistic is that we now have seen four consecutive quarters of rising sales prices on the Island, with last quarter’s median price up over 8%. Market time on Mercer Island is at 57 days which illustrates the low inventory. The real estate recovery here continues apace.
