As day campers, athletes and city staffers went about their day yesterday afternoon at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, it is likely that they did not notice anything different. The lights were still bright and the water, hot. But instead of the electrical energy powering the building coming from afar, some of it was supplied by a new solar panel

set up just a few yards away from the northeast corner of the building. On Tuesday, July 23, mayor Bruce Bassett, city staff and donors activated the first city-owned solar array on the Island. The installation was built with grant money from Puget Sound Energy and citizen donations, and will produce approximately 4,500 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. The panels and electrical equipment were made in Washington. Mercer Island’s success in meeting Puget Sound Energy’s Green Power Challenge, to encourage adoption of renewable energy, led to a $30,000 challenge grant for the solar project. The Interstate 90 floating bridge will be closed several times, Aug. 2-4, for the Patriots Jet Team performances during Seafair. Both directions and on/off ramps of I-90 from Interstate 5 to Island Crest Way on Mercer Island will be closed, as required by the Federal Aviation Administration. Closures will run from 1:15 to 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2; Saturday, Aug. 3; and Sunday, Aug. 4. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, and if you need to drive across the bridge, do so at least 30 minutes before the closure. To learn more, visit the WSDOT website at www.wsdot.wa.gov.

He added, “As a community, we need to take additional steps toward reducing the Island’s carbon footprint.” The installation will earn credit on the community center’s electric bill, and will generate approximately $2,500 per year in revenue under the Washington State Production Incentive Program. The Islander Pub & Restaurant has one more week to remain in its current space until it must move out. The closing day is set for Saturday, Aug. 3. “The owners of this building are really working hard to help us,” said Brian Patton, who owns The Islander. “We are trying to stay open for as long as possible.” A demolition permit for the building still had yet to be issued. The restaurant was initially scheduled to close this weekend. Next week, it will remain open with a limited menu and hours.

Islander | FROM 1 The Islander’s new location in Aviara won’t be ready to open until late September or October — leaving a long gap after closing. The new location is approximately 70 percent complete, and The Islander received its final electrical permit from the city on Tuesday. With 5,960 square feet including the outdoor patio, the new location will have a total capacity of 237 occupants and 90 parking stalls in the garage. In a more contemporary decor featuring northwest timber, there will be 12 booths, numerous tables and a separate bar in the back. Larger parties can be accommodated, and outdoor patio seating is anticipated by the spring of 2014. “We are working feverishly to get our new place open,” said Patton, who has a home on West Mercer Way. From Belfast, Northern Ireland, he has resided in the Seattle area for 30 years. Patton owns The Dubliner Irish Pub in Fremont and four other local restaurants on golf courses, including Willows Run in Redmond. He started The Islander with

Law includes money for study on how teachers use their time Study will track how teachers divide their time between classroom and other tasks By Jerry Cornfield

Those wondering what public school teachers do all day are going to get an answer. Tucked deep in Washington’s new twoyear budget is money for a study to find out what a “typical work day” looks like for thousands of teachers toiling away in the state’s 295 school districts. Lawmakers specifically want “an estimate of the percent of a teacher’s typical day that is spent on teaching-related duties and the percentage of the teacher’s day that is spent on duties that are not directly related to teaching.” The y’ve asked Central Washington University’s respected College of Education and Professional Studies to figure it out for a paltry $25,000. Researchers there intend to use much of the next school year to collect details of teachers’ daily lives in small, medium and large schools situated on both sides of the Cascades and in all corners of the state.

With logs, surveys, interviews or other means, they will try to reveal how teachers pass the hours, a subject of much debate in an unending political inquest of public education. “It’s an old question that no one has ever answered with data,” said Linda Schactler, director of public affairs for the Ellensburg-based university. “We’ve answered it with anecdotes. We think we know, but we haven’t actually done the research.” It’s hard not to sit through a legislative hearing on the quality of Washington schools without a champion of education reform insisting that the system is failing students because teachers are not spending enough time teaching. This is followed by a rebuttal from a teachertype saying they can’t spend more time teaching because it is tied up on tasks required by the state like compiling reports and conducting tests. Rep. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, proposed the study by the university because he was tired of listening to the back-andforth in front of the House Education Committee on which he serves. While he thinks that teachers are weighted down by state-imposed chores, he wanted to find out if it’s actually true.

“I got frustrated at the unfunded mandates,” he said. “During the session there were some folks trying to add requirements to the teacher’s work day. I said they’re full.” He and two teachers who serve on the House panel — Rep. Monica Stonier, D-Vancouver, and Rep. Steve Berquist, D-Renton — are going to help design the study. A full report is due in December. However, lawmakers are likely to give them until the end of the school year in order to track time expended for testing, which happens in the spring. McCoy hopes the final product will bring clarity to one part of the conversation on education reform. But he isn’t so naïve to believe that the results will quell the debate on how teachers spend their time in the classroom. “You’ll still have the naysayers saying it won’t mean anything,” he said. And the results may prove McCoy’s thinking wrong about teachers and become fodder for reformers. “I understand that,” he said. “We have to get the information out there.” Once lawmakers know how much time teachers are teaching, they can tackle the next question of how well they teach. Artful Terra Bella opens Islander’s Bellevue Old Main gift shop opens in former ticket office By Rebecca Mar

A new gift shop has opened on the north end of Mercer Island, in the former Pacific Northwest Ticket Service building. Nancy Meade’s goal was to open Terra Bella by Summer Celebration. Her shop opened on that Saturday, July 13. Terra Bella moved out of its Old Main Street location in Bellevue at the end of May to make way for the construction of a 258-unit apartment and retail complex. Meade’s sister, Sharon Roth, owns a clothing store, Jarbo, across the street. At one time, their businesses were next to each other. Roth is also an Island resident, but spends a lot of time in L.A. Meade found the new Island location by wordof-mouth, just three weeks ago. At 800 square feet, it is considerably larger than the shop’s former location. Many Island residents had been begging her to move the shop to the Island, Meade said. The Island had a need for a gift shop. Terra Bella offers home decor, accessories and gifts, from imported fine Italian linens and fair trade scarves to Sid Dickens memory blocks and digitized gift cards of daughter Julia Meade’s oil paintings and other artwork. Other items include artisan ceramic bowls from New York City and Hudson Beach glassware. Judaica is also available with a selection of MetalaceArt items, the “art of lace on metal,” by

Meade had once owned a container gardens business, and operated a linen and gift business out of her Island home starting 13 years ago. Holding fundraisers for various local organizations continues, as the shop supports Mercer Island schools, sports teams, preschools, churches and other charitable organizations such as Children’s Hospital and Bellevue Lifespring. “I really started on Mercer Island in my home, and now we’re back here,” she said. Thursday was Meade’s first day in the shop, as she had spent over a week at a buyers’ event in Atlanta.

e are very happy that a new hotel will be built on the old Sunset Highway in the Town Center. The new Hotel Mercer, to be completed in 2015, will replace the 50-year-old Travelodge that was torn down some half dozen years ago. But it won’t be the same. Make no mistake, the Travelodge needed to be torn down. As the years passed, it became an eyesore, a bit dilapidated as it awaited its fate. Located on the North end of the Island on the old Sunset Highway, it became dwarfed by The Mercer Apartments and Aljoya construction sites, sitting in an increasingly congested and noisy space. And it was old and dated. The 33-room, 13,000-square-foot motel was built in 1957. Its design was classic 1950s — the place where you pulled the Chevy off the highway and parked at the door. Yet, the place was always full. The two-story motel was the only game in town or even nearby, for years. Its demise has been a loss. Every town needs a place like the Travelodge — an OK place close by — clean enough, cheap and easy. When it closed, the rates at the old motel were between $79 and $129 a night. It is doubtful that rooms at the new hotel will be offered at those rates. In these intervening years, it has been difficult, if not impossible, to find a place to stay nearby when a tree fell on the house during a storm or when the floors were refinished. Where would you put up those college friends of your daughter when the beds at home were full? The alternative? A hotel or motel in faraway Seattle or Bellevue. There are a few bed and breakfasts here on the Island, but they are not the kind of place that construction workers are likely to stay. Many Islanders remember that the Travelodge parking lot was — more often than not — full of big pickups packed with construction gear. It was not fancy, but clean and convenient. From there, the crews were up early to grab a cup of coffee (and a bite at the now long-gone Denny’s restaurant) and be off to their jobs — many times, right on the Island. Now, there was a way to save gas and energy.

To the editor Summer Celebration is not like it used to be I read the editorial (July 17 about Summer Celebration), and I felt that I should write about earlier Summer Celebrations. This event began in 1967 and was located at the present community center site, first in a school, and later in the original community center building. It was sponsored for many years by the Mercer Island Visual Arts League (MIVAL). The centerpiece of this event was a juried art show with entrants from the entire Puget Sound area. Usually over 500 pieces were submitted and 25 percent were selected. There was also a junior art show with prizes as part of the festival. There were several booths selling artwork, crafts and locally made outdoor furniture. There were two or three small food vendors and a few small musical presentations. In 1990, the city became a partner in the event, and it was moved to a town center location. Later, the city took over complete control of the event and changed the name from the Summer Arts Festival to Summer Celebration. It was held originally on 78th Avenue S.E. and was later relocated to 77th Avenue S.E. During that time, the Reporter provided a 12-page magazine section that was delivered with the weekly paper. It contained a map of the many festival activities, a schedule and description of musical and other activities, and a description of the arts and crafts sales booths (there were 180 in 1990). At that time, listed for children were face painting, balloons, paper dolls, music, puppets, jugglers “and much more.” There were dozens of entertainers including

vocalists, bands, small musical ensembles, belly dancers, magicians, etc., not to mention Ronald McDonald. The festival map for 1990 shows a main stage, a children’s stage, a Ronald McDonald stage, a beer garden/wine tasting area, a small food area and a small antique car area. The map also shows event parking (for $1) on Mercerdale Field. At this year’s festival, no longer named Summer Arts Festival, there is still some MIVAL connection. The two main features are now the food stalls and the children’s ride area with many costly rides. I would be surprised if there were more than 25 vendors that could be described as local artists or craft people. Many vendors do not come back the next year. In place of vendors are booths featuring lawyers, doctors, dentists, home improvements, political organizations, religious groups and Costco. There is also an extensive vintage automobile area. I also did not see the teen basketball competition that I have seen in earlier years. Frankly, I see no point in returning next year. The point of my comments is

that maybe it is time for the people involved in this to take a good look in what has transpired and maybe be inspired to give us a worthwhile experience. Azaria Rousso

The question should be ‘What do lawmakers do?’ In response to the question, “What do teachers do?” (the proposal that teachers should track how they use their time, see column on page 4), that is the wrong question. The more appropriate question should be what do “lawmakers” do to justify their existence? They build stadiums that the people vote against, they raise car tab prices when the people vote against it, and they have all manner of welfare for special interests that are against the people’s wishes. Norman Sturdy Craig November 13, 1933-July 16, 2013

Norman was born in Lawrence, Kansas, to Everett E. and Elizabeth E. Craig. He was the fourth of six children, older sisters Ruth and Jean, older brother Charles and younger brothers Lawrence and Kenneth. He attended school in Lawrence, and after high school received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas where he majored in Industrial Engineering. While enrolled at KU, he enlisted in the Army and served as a communications specialist while he was stationed in Germany. After receiving his degree Norm headed west to Seattle, WA where he was hired by The Boeing Company in 1959. Soon thereafter he met the love of his life Darlene J. Kleve. They were married on November 21, 1962. Norm’s career spanned over 36 years in the Defense and Space Group of Boeing. One of the highlights of his tenure at Boeing occurred in 1990-1992 when Norm and Darlene moved to Lincoln, England as part of the AWACS Program. He often referred to these two years as a “wonderful gift” as it provided an opportunity to travel throughout Europe and inspired future trips to Turkey, Israel, England, France, and Norway. Norm was an extremely devoted family man and loving husband for more than 50 years. In 1995, he retired and pursued many varied interests which included woodworking, investing, and gardening. Norm and Darlene were active members of the Eastside Fuchsia Society which included work at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens. Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was also extremely important to Norm. He especially enjoyed the Men’s Bible Study that met twice a month on Saturday mornings. He was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Elizabeth Craig, one sister Jean Spomer, and one brother Charles Craig. He is survived by his loving wife Darlene of 50 years; son Steven (Johanna) of Sammamish,WA and son Eric (Jennifer) of Atlanta, GA and daughter Julianne (Mike) Martret of Newcastle, WA; sister Ruth Ellen Craig of Corvallis, OR; brothers Lawrence Craig of Baldwin, KS and Kenneth Craig of Valencia, CA; grandchildren Callie, Anna, and Audrey Craig, Megan, Everett and Peter Craig, and Grace and Hannah Martret; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Man threatens good Samaritan with sledgehammer By Reporter Staff

A man was arrested on investigation of assault at his home in the 5800 block of East Mercer Way after threatening a passerby with a sledgehammer over parking during the weekend of Summer Celebration. Police responded to the scene at an East Mercer Way residence at 9:42 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, after the suspect’s wife reported a parking disturbance. The victim, a Kirkland resident, said that he had parked his truck and boat along the side of East Mercer Way while trying to help an elderly woman find her home. He had encountered the woman, lost and confused, at the boat launch, and drove south on East Mercer Way looking for her home. Accompanied by his wife and friend, he parked in the 5800 block and was confronted by the resident of an adjacent property — a

man who approached him with a raised sledgehammer while demanding that he move his vehicle. The resident threatened to use the sledgehammer on the victim’s boat. Telling the suspect to go back to his house, the victim moved forward until the suspect was backed up to his house and basement door, according to the police report. The suspect’s wife then appeared in the doorway and pulled out a small caliber handgun. The victim stated that she pointed the gun at him. The woman, however, denied pointing it at anyone. The victim ran out of the driveway and moved his vehicle across the street. The two other witnesses present did not observe the whole incident. Police arrived and took the gun, which was loaded, into evidence along with a clip and 12-pound sledgehammer.

Mary (Hood) Daly

Mary was born October 1, 1924, in Attica, New York and died on July 1, 2013, in Rio Verde, Arizona. Mary met her first husband Gordon Hood while working at Bell Aircraft in Buffalo, New York, was married there, and started a family. At the end of 1960, she moved to Mercer Island, Washington and was widowed in 1973. In the time that followed, she became an avid golfer which remained a part of her life. She was employed by the EPA and then transferred to work for the Federal Aviation Administration at Boeing Field. She met and later married Dick Daly in 1976, also a resident of Mercer Island. Both discovered their children had known each other in high school during the middle to late 1960s. After Dick retired from Boeing and Mary from the FAA, both became very active in golf, and in the winter began to seek warmer climates to continue their outdoor activities, visiting Arizona. Before moving permanently to Rio Verde, they maintained a winter home in Leisure World located in Mesa, Arizona. They loved life during their 37 years together, and Mary was active in the social and community life at Rio Verde, playing golf with Dick and women’s groups. As a member of the St. Dominic Mission Church, she maintained many friendships there, and she and Dick regularly supported the efforts of the church to help those less fortunate. The family gathered in Rio Verde on July 6, to celebrate her life. She is survived by spouse Lt. Cmdr. Richard H. Daly, USN (Ret.), of Rio Verde; son Thomas (Sheila) Hood of Tampa, Florida; stepchildren Kathleen Daly (Brian) Bauernfeind, Pekin, Illinois; Dr. Richard H. News briefs Sound Transit light rail hits record Sound Transit’s Link light rail celebrated its fourth birthday on July 18 amid continued strong ridership growth and recordsetting trends this summer. The 15-mile line has carried more than 30 million riders since it opened to the public on July 18, 2009. Link has seen doubledigit annual ridership growth since opening, and averaged almost 32,000 weekday boardings in June, a 14 percent increase over June, 2012. State has second highest fees for wireless users Wireless service tax and fee rates in the United States rank second highest in Washington state, according to a recent report released by the Tax Foundation. The report found that “U.S. wireless consumers pay an average 17.18 percent in taxes and fees on their cell phone bill, including 11.36 percent in state and local charges.” Washington state’s rate is just slightly less than Nebraska with 18.62 percent, and residents pay an average 24.44 percent in combined federal, state and local taxes. Oregon has the lowest rate at 1.85 percent. Other states in the top 10 with high rates include New York, Florida, Illinois, Rhode Island and Missouri. The report notes that “states favor cell phone

taxes because they can raise revenue in a relatively hidden way” and concludes, “cell phone users are overtaxed relative to consumers of other goods and at risk of double taxation. Finally, the wide number of taxing authorities and the wide variety in rates makes tracking problematic and burdensome.” An estimated 321.7 million Americans were cell phone subscribers in 2012, and 34 percent of households were solely using wireless phones and did not have landlines. PSE raises gas and electricity rates Electricity rates will increase by 3.34 percent this year for Puget Sound Energy customers, and natural gas rates will also go up 1.55 percent. The rate hike is part of a multiyear rate plan approved by state regulators on Tuesday. The plan raises electric and gas rates put in place on July 1, but will limit increases over the next three to four years. A PSE customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each month can expect to see their electric bill increase by $3.24 a month for a total of $100.33 a year. Natural gas customers using 68 therms a month would pay $1.28 a month more for a total of $77.89 a year. During the next three to four years, the company will be allowed to increase rates by a maximum of 3 percent of PSE’s annual revenue with any excess amounts above the 3 percent recovered in the following year. Ferguson shared his goals and challenges in consumer protection, privacy, a highprofile discrimination lawsuit and the latest scams, when he met with staff of the Snoqualmie Valley Record, a Sound Publishing newspaper, on Wednesday, July 10. Elected to the state’s top legal job last November, Ferguson beat fellow King County Council member Reagan Dunn by about 200,000 votes. Our attorneys handle huge tort cases, where the state is being sued for millions. You have to have good attorneys. We’re losing attorneys all the time ... Thankfully, the freeze was eliminated this year ... Covenant Church youth pastor called to Methow Valley By Rebecca Mar

The former youth minister of the Mercer Island Covenant Church has been tapped to pastor a church in the Methow Valley. Jeff Palmberg, whose father Bud pastored MICC for 26 years, has relocated to Twisp, Wash., with his wife, Tami. He is the new pastor of the Community Covenant Church of the Methow Valley. Palmberg has served for 25 years in various Covenant churches in associate pastor positions focusing on youth ministry. He became a youth pastor on Mercer Island in 2006. The position has been made part-time, and the church has a new youth intern instead of a full-time youth pastor. A Mercer Island High School graduate, Palmberg grew up here from a very young age. His children attended Island schools and his parents now reside in Covenant Shores. His son, Joey, is now majoring in art at North Park University in Chicago, and his daughter, Ellie, a recent MIHS graduate, is preparing for a six-month Youth With A Mission Discipleship Training School. When Palmberg learned that his position at the

Covenant Church was ending, he began looking for other ministry opportunities. With the encouragement of peers and the MICC interim pastor, he started considering a lead pastor role. The church in Twisp invited him and his wife for a casual visit to see how they might like the area. Twisp’s total population is under 1,000. The closest Costco and Walmart are more than an hour away. There are no chain restaurants or stores, or even stoplights in town. “It is a different mindset; we had to wrap our minds around, what does that mean? Would we go crazy?” Palmberg said. “During that visit, we realized, it’s the people. We just fell in love with the people … and we felt a peace about this idea of living in a smaller community.” The Methow Valley is a major destination campers, hikers and bikers, and it is also popular for cross country skiing and winter sports. “There’s a sense of a major flow of people — you’re not just stuck in this place,” he said. The size of the congregation is around 140. By comparison, about 300 people attend the Mercer Island Covenant Church. “People who move to the

Love God, love others. [The church’s] purpose statement is ‘hearts reaching up and hands reaching out,’” said Palmberg, who was a young boy when he put his faith in Jesus Christ. Dip in with Oh Chocolate’s new class on Mercer Island By Megan Managan

Chocolate lovers unite. Islanders can now dip into their favorite chocolate, thanks to the new class offered at Oh Chocolate! The class, which debuted to a small group on Saturday evening, is a blend of history and dipping, learning the ins and outs of the chocolate business from owner Margo Masaoka. The class has long been a part of the shop in Madison Park, but Masaoka wanted to give it a go at the store’s flagship on the Island. “It’s our maiden voyage,” she said of the first class. “I’m going to be running the store now, and it’s my little baby.” The evening began with an inciting plate of chocolate while Masaoka walked those at the table through the family’s history. Oh Chocolate! is the brainchild of Masaoka’s parents, Gertie and Karl Krautheim, whose adventure began in Hawaii, where Gertie learned to experiment with her husband’s favorite treat. The pair later moved to California to be closer to family, opening their very first store in Culver City, where it became a popular stop for those working in the nearby film studios. While yearning for “crisper air,” Masaoka explained that her parents found their way to Wenatchee in the 1970s, but soon discovered a fancy

chocolate store didn’t fit with the area. They headed west to the suburb of Mercer Island and opened the current location 27 years ago. With the tempting wheel of chocolate lying on the table, Masaoka explained the way that cocoa is harvested, how it grows best in the rainforest near the equator when left to its own devices. Each pod comes with just 40 beans, which must be harvested at exactly the right time. From there, much like coffee, the beans are dried, then roasted and eventually processed into the chocolatey goodness that Americans know and love. When her parents first began the journey, Masaoka said they tried the various types of chocolate, from Belgian to Swiss, finally set-

tling on a French family’s process, which created a slightly bittersweet but delectable chocolate. The Guittard factory, where Oh Chocolate’s candy comes from, is located outside of San Francisco. While explaining the various processes and types of chocolate, Masaoka walks her class through the various types on the chocolate plate, from dark to bittersweet to white chocolate, each with its own explanation of how it is made and how it differs from the other varieties. Then the fun began. Behind the shop’s chocolate-filled counter, piles of warm, melted dark chocolate were poured onto the granite, as Masaoka explained how to temper it. With their hands, students played in a pile of chocolate, pushing it

Marshmallows, shortbread, strawberries and even potato chips were laid out for students to practice the craft. The end result: an impressive amount of dipped goodies to take home and savor. Masaoka said she hopes to keep each class small, offering an intimate and private setting, which easily allowed for customization and learning. Her ideal class would include between six to eight people, offered Friday and Saturday evenings, after the shop closes.

Classes are already scheduled through the rest of July and August, and Masaoka expects them to fill fast. The class is $79 per person. Private parties for small

Long before Matt Boyd tossed one of the most dominant performances in College World Series history for the Oregon State Beavers in June, he was a Little Leaguer in Thunderbird Little League and State Player of the Year at Eastside Catholic High School. The Mercer Island native, a recent signee of the Toronto Blue Jays organization, Boyd helped coach Pat Casey and the Beavers get back to Omaha, Neb., for the first time since 2007 this year and didn’t disappoint on the big stage, throwing a complete game four-hit shutout in his team’s 1-0 win over Indiana in an elimination game. Boyd took some time with the Reporter, just before shipping out to Florida to begin his first professional baseball assignment, to talk about his beginning in the game, the passion for the orange and black in Corvallis and being the life of the party in Omaha. Me r c e r Is l a n d Reporter: What was the most memorable part of this year off the field? Matt Boyd: Just how close-knit our team was.

Mercerwood Shore Club repeats as Midlakes champion

Our team was the closest team I’ve ever played on and I’ve played on teams that had some great chemistry. This team was almost the exact same team from the year before and the chemistry was unreal. We were sad to see it end; we wanted to play three games longer. We hung out off the field, from the classroom to hanging out to golfing and working out. I lived with five other ballplayers, and we’d have at least another five hanging out playing Xbox or watching baseball. That was a huge thing, and I think it really contributed to our success on the field. Reporter: Was Omaha and the College World Series everything you thought it would be from an experience standpoint? Boyd: It was everything and more. It was the closest thing to a big league experience, and it was very special. You’re a superstar in that town for the few weeks you’re there, and everything is baseball. It was pretty sweet to be playing on that stage. I’m just very grateful. From being a little kid watching it on ESPN, it hit me before my start when I was walking around the halls while the team was getting loose.

Once again, the Mercerwood Shore Club has claimed the Midlakes league title, this time tying for first place to win the 2013 championship on Saturday, July 20. The championships were held at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, where the Shore Club team fin-

ished with 1,786 points for first place, tied with the Newport Hills Swim and Tennis Club. The Mercer Island Beach Club team was close behind in third place with 1,459 points, while the County Club team finished in 11th place with a point total of 569. The Shore Club also won the Division 1 this season.

Reporter: When you go back to Little League and your start in baseball, what do you miss from those early days? Boyd: The thing that was always fun was just playing with your best friends. The thing that really sticks out is all those memories playing the game. If I played good, I get a Slurpie and pack of baseball cards with my dad. I was out to dinner with my grandma a few nights ago and saw a team there from Mercer Island Little League. Those were the best times of the year, trying to win state and go to the world series.

Reporter: How cool was it to play for your dad at Eastside Catholic? Boyd: It was awesome, I was very fortunate and blessed. He was always harder on me, but it prepared me and built me into who I am today and made me stronger. He always got the best out of me. Looking back, I was very lucky to have my dad as a coach. I know a lot of players who can’t stand to be coached by their father, but it always worked out great for us.

Laughs by Chaos Theory this weekend at YTN By Reporter Staff

The Chaos Theory Youth Improvisational Comedy Troupe will perform this weekend at Youth Theatre Northwest. The show, which features no script and where nothing has been rehearsed, features tons of laughs. The troupe, directed by Alex Grindeland, takes suggestions from the audience to create scenarios. Hello! I am Alex Seidel and I’m going to be a senior at Mercer Island High School this fall. I’m super excited to be hosting my second National Night Out for my neighborhood, East Seattle, and am organizing the first ever Mercer Island Central Business District National Night Out. I first found out about National Night Out five years ago. We got an invitation for a little block party just around the corner from my house. Being a shy eighth-grader, I was a little nervous to go. Reluctantly, I walked down the street with my mom. Our first event was a quiet evening of meeting some neighbors and eating many bite-sized brownies. We shared phone numbers, emergency preparedness materials and promised to look out for one another. Last year, I decided to extend the invitation to my entire neighborhood, and

not just the one block. I reconnected with my fifth grade D.A.R.E. Officer and Emergency Preparedness Officer, Jennifer Franklin, to register my own National Night Out event. It was fun and easy to organize. I called on some neighborhood kids to help me with flyer distribution and put up posters on a few busy corners. The night finally arrived, and it was a huge success. There were neighbors who had lived in East Seattle for 50 years to neighbors who had lived there for only five days. The park where we hosted the event was buzzing with kids on scooters, dogs, old friends reconnecting, and new friendships forming. The highlights included visits from a MI police car, MI fire car and mayor Bruce Bassett. I’m excited to share that for the first time, the Mercer Island Central Business District will have its very own National Night Out. On Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m.,

you know today, would you change anything about your decision not to sign with the Reds last year? Boyd: Not at all. I’d do it all over again. Coming back to school after my junior year, turning down the draft and the Reds, getting that experience was the best decision of my life. I feel so blessed to have that opportunity and so grateful the Lord helped me see outside the box. I was back there for purposes bigger than baseball and I made memories for the rest of my life. Reporter: What is the first thing you plan to buy? Boyd: I don’t know; I really haven’t thought about that sort of thing. I’m excited about the opportunity. All that money aside, I’m playing this game for fun. Getting paid to play the game you love is a dream. Reporter: What are you looking forward to the most? Boyd: The first thing was I couldn’t wait to pitch in Sky Dome, or Rogers Centre it’s called now. I got to watch a few games there back in the day when I played hockey in Toronto. I’m sitting here looking in my room and I have Blue Jays hats and I have a chance to play in that organization. It’s been a lifelong dream and by no means is it just getting there, it is to get there and dominate. Reporter: What will you miss most about the Pacific Northwest? Boyd: I love the Northwest. I’m going to miss playing at Goss Stadium. I loved the atmosphere we brought with our team. The way people around the town got around the team. I’m going to miss that the most. It was so special. You’re kind of a local celebrity. Being able to wear that black and orange and really fight for that common goal of Omaha. It’s a little different than the pro ranks. You’re with them from September to June. Unlike a lot of college sports, there is no offseason. I’m going to miss it.

Northwest Lady Sharks fastpitch team wins tournament The Northwest Lady Sharks 12U fastpitch team recently played in the Joint Base Lewis McChord Wounded Warrior Fund

tournament in mid-July. During the tournament, held at SERA fields in Tacoma and at the McChord Air Force Base, the team was undefeated. All proceeds raised went to the Wounded Warrior Fund, which helps injured veterans. The Lady Sharks beat the

Federal Way Knights, 14-0, in the semifinal, and beat the Mosquito Squad team, 8-2, in the finals to win the championship. The team includes Mercer Island residents Olivia Kane and Angelina Barokas. The team is coached by Ken Jones, Brian Hoke, John Studioso and Jason Carter.
