Warrior Dash attracted an estimated 8,000 runners, plus their family and friends, to Kelley Farm on Saturday, where athletes completed a 5K slogging through mud, crawling under barbed wire and jumping over fire among other obstacles. So that’s what the Sumner YMCA would look like. The city of Sumner on Thursday published the first renderings of the planned recreational facility, which were released by YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties last week.
The drawings, which show the exterior of the facility from four sides, confirm that the proposed building shares elements of design with existing YMCA facilities, such as the one in Gig Harbor. However, at 100,000 square feet, the Sumner YMCA would be nearly 30

Water safety has been a common theme this summer on Lake Tapps, with good reason. East Pierce Fire and Rescue has hosted summer Splash-Tacular events at Pierce County North Tapps Park since 2008. Due to the drowning at Allan Yorke Park last year, the department has decided to beef up the annual Splash-Tacular event by adding a second date at Allan Yorke Park. Open water safety concepts will be taught by experts from East Pierce Fire, Bonney Lake Police Department, Pierce County Sheriff and Sumner/Bonney Lake Aquatic Center. Activities such as life jacket relays, B-I-N-G-O and onshore fishing games will take place for kids of all ages to learn about drowning prevention. Participants will also have the opportunity to squirt water from a fire hose and use professional tools to see and communicate with underwater divers. Although Splash-Tacular is not a part of the SwimSafe coalition, the goals of each program go handin-hand. East Pierce Fire Public Education Specialist Dina Sutherland said the SwimSafe and Splash-

Firefighters Fill the Boot Blood drives for August By Daniel Nash
Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue began “filling the boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Friday, July 19. Firefighters set up in full gear at the intersection of 9th Street East and 182nd Avenue East soliciting cash donations from passing motorists. Firefighters will continue to be stationed at well-tread commuter intersections in Bonney Lake, Sumner and Edgewood on three separate days through Aug. 3. Look for the firefighters at various times on: • Tuesday, July 23 in Bonney Lake at 200th Avenue East and South Prairie Road East; • Wednesday, July 24 in Sumner at Valley Avenue and Main Street; and • Saturday, August 3 in Edgewood at 24th Street East and Meridian Avenue East. Firefighters will be at the intersections during morning and evening commute times, as well as other times over the course of each day. The Fill the Boot campaign, sponsored by East Pierce Professional Firefighters Local 3520, raises money to assist families

Cascade Regional Blood Services has scheduled 13 mobile blood drives in Bonney Lake and Sumner in August, increasing s monthly visibility through summer events such as Get Fit Bonney Lake, Bonney Lake Days and the Classy Chassis Car Show.

In 2012, firefighters collected contributions totaling $20,000, the largest amount raised to date. Their goal for 2013 is to break their personal record again, raising more than $20,000. “The great thing is that the money we raise stays local to help people in our area affected by Muscular Dystrophy,” said firefighter Andrew House, who is organizing the event.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary health agency founded in 1950 to fight 43 neuromuscular diseases, including ALS or Lou Gehrigs Disease, which affect millions of Americans. The term muscular dystrophy describes a group of diseases characterized by the degeneration of voluntary muscles. The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors. MDA seeks no government grants, United Way funding or fees from those it serves.
Cascade’s mobile blood unit will be parked at Columbia Bank in Bonney Lake every Friday of August from 1 to 6 p.m. On Aug. 30, the blood drive will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to accommodate Labor Day weekend. Its presence is sponsored by the Bonney Lake Lions Club. Columbia Bank is located at 19925 state Route 410. The unit will be at the Get Fit Bonney Lake Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Police Blotter All suspects in the police blotter are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
HARASSMENT: At 3:09 p.m. July 9, an officer met with a Bonney Lake woman about threatening text messages and an unwanted visit from her exhusband. She told police the man had shown up at her home the day before, despite a restraining order issued during their divorce proceedings. She said the threats had been
ongoing since Dec. 2011, and she provided copies of several threatening emails she had received in that time. While she hadn’t been afraid he would carry out these threats in the past, she said he had become more angry since she began dating other men. The officer obtained a copy of the divorce decree from the city prosecutor, and discovered the restraining order was no longer valid after the divorce was finalized. The complainant was advised she would need to have a new protection order issued, and that a police report on the harassment would be forwarded to the prosecu-

tor for review. Later in the day, at 7:29 p.m. two officers responded to the woman’s residence, where she reported her ex-husband was trying to take her dog. Police reiterated the restraining order was no longer valid after the divorce. She understood and said she did not want him to return to her home. The man said he had left his dog with the ex-wife for a few weeks, and she would not give it back. Police advised him he would need to contact a lawyer and pursue civil action to obtain the dog, as he was not welcome at his ex-wife’s residence. He was informed of the harassment report, and he
said he understood and that the messages he sent had been mean. MALICIOUS MISCHIEF: At 5:03 p.m. July 10, an officer was dispatched to a 103rd Street East residence where a caller advised her friend’s brother had nailed lumber together to box her into the driveway. The officer arrived at the home; the caller had left with her car, but the suspect was contacted in the driveway. He was sweating profusely and had several apparent mood swings while talking to the officer. He was secured into handcuffs and placed in the patrol car. His mother reported
he was bipolar and needed a mental evaluation, as he had recently displayed an increased level of irrational behavior and unprovoked anger. Of the car incident, she said the caller had dropped off her daughter and when she went to her car to leave, she discovered the lumber obstacle and the suspect doing something inside her engine compartment. He had also apparently painted “thief” on her rear window. They argued and when she went into her car, it would not start. The suspect then reattached her battery cables and began arguing with the caller about bringing children

An officer met with her to take a property damage report and photograph the spray paint on the car. The officer on 103rd photographed the lumber obstacle for evidence. The suspect’s mother was advised he could not be taken in for a mental evaluation based on the incident. He was booked into Enumclaw Jail for third-degree malicious

Help us solve a mystery about a new plant my neighbor is growing. It looks like an alyssum with small white clusters of blooms but it is much larger and with more flowers than any alyssum we have ever
seen. It is part of a flowering basket full of mixed flowers. The reason we both want to know the name is because on hot days or if she forgets to water her container the other plants wilt but this lovely, white-flowered plant continues to look great! Yes, this is indeed a knight in shining white blossoms that has rescued heat-stressed hanging baskets. The name of the new lobularia hybrid is Frosty Knight and it looks just like alyssum – but on steroids. Frosty Knight lobularia does well in the ground as a frilly annual peeking over the edge of sunny pathways or in hanging baskets and container gardens. In my garden this cold- and heattolerant annual flowered from April until October. So here’s the good news – a second new variety of lobularia with a lavender tinge to the flowers has also been introduced. It is called lobularia Blushing Princess and it should reign with

Pruning after blooming is the general rule of green thumb for most flowering shrubs but if you have a rhododendron outgrowing its space you can remove entire branches or just pinch off the new growth candles without harming the plant. Pruning rhododendrons during the summer months will sacrifice some of next year’s blooms, however, so prepare to have a more compact but less floriferous rhododendron. The end of July is when you should see plenty of green tomatoes, young zucchini and baby cucumbers in the vegetable garden. Resist the urge to water these crops during the heat of the day or late at night. Consistent watering when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch is the way to go. Tomato skin is especially sensitive to splitting and scarring from too much or too little water. Watering at night can encourage fungal infections if you keep the foliage damp on warm summer nights. Cranky old men are timeless While listening to a professor discuss the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates this weekend, a couple of things struck me. It occurred to me it was no wonder the Greeks knocked him off. He dressed funny and almost never took a bath. One of the writers of antiquity said his wife was a shrew. Can we blame her? He made no money, dressed in a muumuu and smelled like rotten Greek yogurt. The official reason the Athenians gave Dennis Box for killing off Editor Socrates was he was a bad influence on the kids and made up goofy gods. Nothing like tyranny in a democracy. My, how things have changed. The other thought that hurt my feeble brain was a dialogue of Plato’s where Socrates discussed writing. Socrates said writing would ruin the youth. He said it would weaken the youth’s verbal ability and memory. That darn writing. As far as we know Socrates never wrote anything. Everything we know of Socrates comes from Plato and Xenophon. If Socrates was walking around today in his muumuu I think he would be making the same argument about texting or Twitter or Facebook or the Web or TV.

But I digress. • Gnomes vs. Trolls This spring a project was started in parks called the Bonney Lake

Gnomes. There were over 300 likes on their Facebook page. It added some fun for families visiting Bonney Lake Parks. Councilmember Tom Watson was the carpenter behind the project and he and I spearheaded the project after seeing a similar phenomenon on the news about Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Scott Anderson, park board member, set up the whimsical website and maintained it. Anderson and I funded the first set of doors. GPS coordinates determined by Park Board Chair Jim Bouchard led geocachers to doors and were posted on the City website. And then came the trolls. They kicked in the doors. They stole the doors. The constant destruction and maintenance was not anticipated but
involved much work to rebuild and replace the doors. The first one was installed in Cedarview Park and destroyed within 30 minutes. And then there were the detractors who proceeded to call anything fun, different, or park oriented stupid because they have a difference of opinion. The Wikipedia definition of a troll is: In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidently or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal ontopic discussion. But I digress, again. Watson was willing to make the doors, but needed help with more donations of wood and a paint crew. The Chamber of Commerce was consulted, but declined, stating they were intrigued. There was a wood donation. The little elves at

Someone suggested the seniors buy the old bus from the City. Use their non-profit to insure it. Some councilmembers seemed concerned that the free bus that is being piloted in this area may feel the senior center bus was competition. Well, are they going to pick up non-senior citizens, like the youth that cannot ride the free bus service? Or has that issue been resolved? Personally, I am very proud of the self-sufficiency of the creative and industrious seniors of the Bonney Lake plateau. I am pretty sure they will put their heads together and craft yet another positive outcome. With age comes wisdom. Maybe they are willing to take over the Bonney Lake Gnomes Facebook page?

Like the Bonney Lake Senior Center, the Bonney Lake and Prairie Ridge Food Banks do the same; serve all who come through the door. My opinion: hungry people are hungry people whether they live inside or outside the city limits. If users are within our commute area, they shop here, they are in our utility service area, live in one of the two school districts that serve this city, they go to the doctor and dentist here, eat at our restaurants and live on this plateau or they work here, they expect and should get services at the food banks or senior center. But I digress yet again.

This was another topic of discussion at the last council workshop: should the old senior center bus be surplused and sold, or retained as a backup? There are a group of seniors who think it should be retained and are willing to pay to fix up the old bus. The Bonney Lake Senior Center serves not only the city but the plateau. Some of the seniors live out in the county and the bus picks them up. As you know, Pierce Transit no longer serves this part of the county. It really should be renamed

economic development. There is a cultural element in the comprehensive plan. Mayor Neil Johnson said after the election, providing he is re-elected, he plans on setting up an Arts Commission to form and start work in January 2014. If you need to press firmly to feel the ribs, this is overweight. If you cannot feel the ribs at all, this represents an obese animal. If you can see the ribs and there is little to no fat cover, that is referred to as underweight. – Observe and feel your pet’s tail if they will allow you to do this. You should just be able to feel the tail bones as you touch the tail. There should be a little fat cover over the tail bones so you cannot see them. You will need to apply pressure to feel the tail bones if your pet is overweight. You will not be able to feel any bones if your pet is obese. You will be able to easily see the tail bones in a pet that is underweight. – Observe your pet from the top so you can visualize its back. From this view, you should be able to observe a definite waist or contour. If there is no waist at all and your dog or cat looks round in shape, this would be obese. A very thin or underweight animal will have an exaggerated hourglass appearance in their waist. – Observe your pet from the side. An abdominal tuck should be present if your pet has an ideal body condition. The area behind the ribs should be smaller than the chest. If your pet has an exaggerated abdominal tuck, it is likely underweight. An obese animal will have no abdominal tuck at all. Again, more often than not, overweight pets are a result of too much food intake and not enough activity. In a recent study,

the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention estimated that 44 percent of U.S. dogs were overweight or obese. We as veterinarians can examine your pet to make sure there is not a medical cause for your pet’s weight problem. If medical reasons have been eliminated, we can recommend a diet that will be best to help to achieve an ideal body condition. Beyond a change in diet, regular exercise and restricting the quantity of food that is given are also usually part of a successful weight loss plan. It is imperative to have a veterinarian involved with any kind of weight loss plan. A diet that is too calorie restricted or a plan that results in rapid weight loss can be harmful to your dog and especially to your cat. As we mentioned earlier, overweight pets have many added stresses upon their body and are at an increased risk of diabetes, liver problems and joint pain. Your veterinarian can help prevent these added stresses, by addressing weight issues. The true goal is prevention of illness, pain and suffering. Comprehensive annual exams of all body systems can help diagnose, treat or prevent many health problems before they become life-threatening. More importantly, they help you, as a pet owner, provide a longer, healthier and happier life for your best friend. The Sumner Senior Center held its inaugural health and wellness fair Friday. Program Director Melissa Holt said the senior center receives a lot of visitors seeking information about healthy living but are simply overwhelmed by the prospect of searching for it. The fair provided a central location for seniors and their families to gather information, make community connections and earn free prizes. “We felt it was needed.

Tammy Baxter, owner and administrator of Arcadia Home Care and Staffing in Sumner, was among the vendors present. Arcadia provides in-home care for seniors by certified nursing assistants. “The opportunity to receive the care you need in the comfort of your own home makes a huge difference in the quality of life. We provide that opportunity,” she said.

falling because, “kids not reading anymore.” I suspect the kids aren’t reading what those guys were writing. I have found kids read when it matters. Critical thinking skills are often lacking. I see examples of that in my job almost daily and always from adults. I think I need a muumuu and some rotten Greek yogurt for my oatmeal.

mischief. PACKAGE THEFT: At 6:11 p.m. July 10, an officer responded to 79th Street Place East in reference to four stolen packages. The complainant had ordered truck tires from eBay more than a month prior, but they did not show up. He checked the order status with the seller and UPS, discovering the items had in fact been delivered to the front of his garage on June 7. He was unable to provide suspect information at the time of the report. BURGLARY: At 7:49 p.m. July 10, an officer was dispatched to a commercial burglary at Kindercare on Main Street East. The complainant was a contractor who discovered the front door ajar and heard noises that suggested someone was running out of the building. The office was in disarray, and he notified the facility director. The arriving officer met with the complainant and a colleague, who were remodeling the building. They discovered the front door ajar as they arrived for work, and figured it was an oversight by staff. But once inside, they hear footsteps running through the building. They did not locate anyone inside, but discovered the apparently tampered office. The facility director arrived on scene and, after looking through the business, said the front door and office appeared to be the only things out of place. She confirmed with an employee that all doors had been checked before closing. There did not appear to be any signs of forced entry, and there were no indications of disgruntled employees who might have access to the building. The director was urged to call police again if she discovered items missing or other evidence incident to the case. Photographs of the scene were taken and placed into evidence. GRAFFITI: At 10:39 a.m. July 11, police responded to vandalism at the city water tower. Vulgar graffiti had been painted around half the circumference of the lower portion of the tower. Letters that appeared to be initials were included among the paintings. Pictures were taken of the damage and placed into evidence. STOLEN MOTORCYCLE, ABANDONED: At 9:52 p.m. July 11, an officer on patrol came across a Sheriff’s detective directing traffic around a downed motorcycle. The detective reported she had
come across a man in full leathers trying to pick up the motorcycle, which was on its side and had apparently been damaged. He became frustrated and entered the passenger side of a nearby parked white truck which subsequently left the scene. A check on the cycle’s license plate showed it had recently been sold to a Buckley woman and was not presently reported stolen. A few hours later, the Sheriff’s Office contacted Bonney Lake police to let them know the owner had called to report the motorcycle stolen. She had told them she had last seen the bike in her front yard with the keys in the ignition. An officer completed a report documenting the vehicle’s recovery, as well as a collision report. FRAUD: At 3:18 p.m. July 12, a citizen reported the theft and tampering of a check she had left in the mail. The check was payment on a bill and, after the payee called to report nonpayment, she discovered the check had been cashed in the name of a person unfamiliar to her. She said she had contacted the fraud department of her bank, which required a police case number. IDENTITY THEFT: At 3:25 p.m. July 12, a citizen reported the possible theft of his identity. The complainant had completed a background check and, upon reading the associated paperwork, he discovered his social security number was associated with an unfamiliar name listed as an alias, along with several resident addresses that did not apply to him. An officer advised him to double-check with the background check company to rule out clerical error, and to contact the Social Security Administration to flag his number. The complainant reported he was in the process of doing a credit check and that he would notify police of his findings. WARRANT ARREST: At 12:05 a.m. July 14, an officer patrolling 214th Avenue East conducted a records check on a passing vehicle and discovered the registered owner had several arrest warrants out of Puyallup and Pierce County. The officer contacted the vehicle in front of the Goodwill. A passenger fit the physical description of the registered owner. She identified herself with a name other than the registered owner, but could not provide identification. Tattoos were listed among the owner’s physical description and, when the officer asked to compare them against the
passenger’s tattoos, the passenger identified herself as the registered owner. She was arrested for transfer into Puyallup police custody. The driver was found to have a suspended license, and he parked the car to call a licensed driver. SUSPICIOUS: At 2:50 a.m. July 17, two officers were dispatched to Walmart to respond to a woman who reported a man exhibit-
ing odd behavior. He had pulled up beside her and allegedly asked if she knew where he could buy drugs. Additionally, he allegedly made statements about killing police who “tried to stop him,” that he would kill their families and eat their babies, and that he had a gun in his trunk. As an officer called the reporting party, she said the man was at that
moment following her vehicle. The officer advised her to drive away from him and, if he continued to follow her, to drive to the police department. Another officer located the vehicles and a records check showed the suspect vehicle’s registered owner had a suspended license and an arrest warrant issued by the Puyallup Police Department. The
officer arrested the suspect, confirmed to be the registered owner, at gunpoint. He denied making threatening statements. He was turned over to Puyallup police for the warrant and his vehicle was impounded. During later follow-up with the caller, she reported the suspect had said he was suicidal and wanted a police officer to shoot him.

District adds four full-time kinder classes By Daniel Nash

funding would allow the district to expand its fulltime kindergarten classes on an accelerated schedule. Indeed, the district plans to use local levy dollars to offer two more free kindergarten classes through Bonney Lake and Emerald Hills elementary schools,
according to a press release dated Monday. The four campuses will no longer offer their parttime “red” and “blue” kindergarten classes. “The transition to fullday kindergarten is critical as we implement Common Core State Standards which
are more rigorous than prior targets for student achievement,” Johnson said. “We think this is good news for students and families, because it is the right thing to do for kids.” Other elementary schools in Sumner School
District offer part-time kindergarten programs and tuition-based full-time kindergarten. The district announced it will transition to free full-time programs at all district elementary schools as further state funding becomes available.

Under the agreement, the city agreed to contribute $5 million to the project in exchange for facility vouchers for Sumner citizens. The new agreement doubled the city’s $2.5 million financial commitment to an earlier site plan that would have placed the

The proposed development was blocked in 2012 after the state Growth Management Hearings Board determined city comprehensive plan amendments approved by the County Council had violated state law concerning Agricultural Resource Lands. The project is currently in limbo as the city and Orton Farms LLC await the results of an appeal to Thurston County Superior Court.
