Last month, seven boat owners were issued citations for not having current registrations for boats in the harbor, and this month dozens more may be fined for mooring their boats in Quartermaster without a license to do so. Natalie Sheard and Bethany Dilworth are not your typical milkmaids. And tiptoeing through cow pies is a long way from pirouetting across the stage. But as the founders of the new Cornerstone Dairy, one of Vashon’s only certified dairies, they’ve gone from the world of ballet to the pastures of Vashon Island as artfully as if George Balanchine had choreographed it. Sheard — best known as the owner of Café Luna — discovered Vashon, like so many who now live here, by happenstance. The owner of a dance-wear store in Southern California, she and her husband Luke visited the region often to see their daughter, a dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet. During their visits, the Sheards would go for drives in the country, one day
happening onto Vashon and falling in love with the place. They eventually decided to move here, she said, because she had always wanted to start a little farm. But once she arrived, Sheard — a consummate business owner — took a detour from that dream and bought Café Luna. Dilworth, meanwhile, was a dancer who also came from Southern California, where she and Sheard were good friends. She worked in Sheard’s dance-wear store and taught dance in California before moving to Seattle, where she worked as a baker in a café. Eventually, she, too, moved to Vashon where she landed in the employ of her old boss, working at Café Luna. Dilworth and Sheard’s love affair with the dairy world began in 2011, when Sheard began purchasing milk from Kelsey Kozak, a young but skilled dairywoman and cheese-maker. The two women took Kozak’s cheese class and then went to work SEE DAIRY, 19

For island couple Pete Welch and Allison Shirk, spreading the word about Vashon’s lively arts, cultural and charity scenes has become a passion in recent months. On New Year’s Day of this year, the pair launched a new website, www. vashonevents.com, aimed at providing a user-friendly, one-stop destination to find out about what is happening week-to-week on island stages. The website has now quite literally become a hit, drawing more than 3,000 unique visitors each month. It’s also currently a hub of information for all things musical at this year’s Strawberry Festival, an event for which Welch spent months this year lining up acts. The success of the website has pleased Welch and Shirk, though it hasn’t nec-

Islander starts dry cleaning business in wake of Joy’s closure By SARAH SCHWARZ For The Beachcomber
Islander Melanie Taitano, 19, has started her own dry cleaning business, a venture she says will fill a need she saw in the community. Taitano opened Dry Cleaning Express July 5 in response to the closing of Joy’s Village Cleaners. Joy’s closed last month after 25 years on Vashon, leaving the island without a laundromat or dry cleaners. “Someone mentioned to me that someone should start a dry cleaning business, and I thought, ‘Why not me?’” she said. Dry cleaning can now be dropped off and picked up at the Country Store. Taitano takes the clothing to the House of Kleen in West Seattle, and is currently doing about two runs per week. As business picks up the amount of trips will increase, she said. Country Store manager Mike Biel said he sees the new partnership as productive for both parties. The store just south of town has a lot of available parking, he said, and the dry cleaning would also help draw customers into the store. “Melanie came to me with the idea about a month ago,” Biel said. “We were changing a lot of things anyway, we had some extra space, and it seemed to fit well with the clothing line here.” Part of Taitano’s business model is to keep as much of the process as possible eco-friendly, she said. Dry cleaning is not traditionally an environmentally friendly industry, she said, and she is keeping that in mind. When picking a dry cleaner in Seattle, she said she made sure to find one with eco-friendly options.
“Any area that I can make eco-friendly and sustainable, I am going to do that,” Taitano said, noting that not all garments and stains could be treated with the same eco-friendly chemicals. “Right now I’m leaving it up to the cleaner to determine the way they treat things.” She hopes to make the business appealing in other ways, as well. For instance, the company that makes the packaging she uses to transport the garments donates a portion of its proceeds to breast cancer research. She also hopes to find ways to help sponsor community events in the future, she said. Taitano doesn’t have any dry cleaning experience, but does have business knowledge. After completing her sophomore year at Vashon High School, she commuted to Seattle Central Community College for running start classes. She completed her AA degree in 2012 with a business and web design concentration. For the past year, she has been living on Vashon doing volunteer work through a local Jehovah’s Witnesses group. “I’m not going to say there hasn’t been a steep learning curve for me to come into the dry cleaning business,” Taitano said. “It has been really interesting to learn the business of making people look good, because that is really what it is.” Taitano stressed her interest in community involvement. She loves hearing from people about what she can do better, or how the business could better serve Vashon, she said. “The best business model is to fill a need,” she said. “Currently there is a need for a dry cleaner; I am going to do my best to fill that need.”

County discourages mud-bogging during Strawberry Festival King County is asking that islanders refrain from mud-bogging on county-owned land during the Strawberry Festival. In a press release issued Friday by King County Parks, officials discouraged the long tradition of mudbogging — which typically involves trucks and four-wheel-drive vehicles driving through a muddy swamp — at the end of 107th just south of Vashon town during the festival. The popular mud-bogging site was once privately owned, but the county purchased the property in late 2011 and the 40-acre parcel is now a part of Island Center Forest. The use of motorized vehicles of any kind is not allowed on county park lands. “The land was purchased to protect the critical headwaters of Judd Creek, Vashon’s largest stream watershed, which supports coho salmon habitat,” the press release says. Mud-bogging occurred at the site during last year’s strawberry festival, and parks staff spent time repairing damage to the land there. “Those are resources that could be better used improving the area for island residents,” said David Kimmett, King County Parks’ Natural Lands project manager, in the press release. “Our goal is for the area to become home to a rich diversity of birds and other wildlife through ongoing restoration efforts in partnership with the Vashon–Maury Island Land Trust.”

Granny’s awards large grants to DoVE, VCC By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer
Granny’s Attic has given two significant grants as part of the first round of its new funding cycle. The nonprofit thrift shop recently awarded $20,000 to the DoVE Project, Vashon’s antidomestic violence program, and $35,000 to Vashon Community Care. Earlier this summer, Granny’s announced it would change how it distributed funding, ending its monthly subsidies of Vashon’s health clinic and adopting a grant-based approach that will provide financial support for a variety of health-related programs. Granny’s director Tim Johnson said Granny’s members voted unanimously to award the two recent grants. The organization is still accepting grant requests and estimates it will give out $175,00 to $200,000 this year. Johnson said some funding will likely go to the health center, now called the Franciscan Medical Clinic - Vashon Island after its merger with the Franciscan Health System. “Our goal is to keep pumping money out there,” Johnson said. “That doesn’t imply we’re not working with the clinic anymore.” Johnson said the bulk of the grants will be given in September, but Granny’s members decided to give to VCC now because the grant will be issued in

multiple payments, and to DoVE because the young organization is still working to establish a solid funding base. “They’re getting up and running and they need some anchor grants to get them off the ground and help them win other grants,” Johnson said. DoVE director Elizabeth Archambault said the $20,000 grant was significant for the nonprofit and would go to support its crisis hotline as well one-onone advocacy for domestic violence surviviors. “It really shows the community is getting behind the DoVE Project, which is fantastic for us,” she said. At VCC, a nonprofit Granny’s has supported for several years, the $35,000 grant will cover the “Medicaid gap” for one resident — the difference between what the center receives from the government for the cost of care compared to the actual cost of that care. VCC administrator Janelle Ansell said the funding was more needed than ever, as costs are constantly rising, the center is caring for more people than ever and Medicaid funding is still at 2009 levels. Ansell called Granny’s Attic “a champion of health care on the island.” “VCC has made a commitment to not turn away people that run out of money. ... Every little bit we get helps,” she said.

Park district hopes commissioner dunk tank will provide laughs, healing By SARAH SCHWARZ For The Beachcomber
After everything that has transpired this past year with the fields project, Vashon Park District manager Elaine Ott sees a commissioner dunk tank as a “toungue-in-cheek, fun and safe way to take slight with the commissioners.” “It is no secret that there has been a lot of anger about the fields project,” Ott said. At this year’s Strawberry Festival, community members and visitors alike will be able to take out any anger they may have, or just have fun, by attempting to dunk a parks commissioner. All five current commissioners have agreed to take part, Ott said. They will take shifts of a half hour to an hour, depending on the popularity of the event. The tank will be set up next to a

Ott, maintenance manager Jason Acosta and Captain Joe Wubbold will be at the booth to answer questions and discuss the park district. “This is the first time that the commissioners and the director have come out in a non-meeting environment,” Wubbold said. “What I hope most, is that people come talk to her about the park district, and if they want to dunk a commissioner, that is fine with me as well.” The dunk tank, which was Ott’s idea, will cost $1 per throw and will take place rain or shine on Saturday, July 20. Look for what makes this festival unique On Monday long trailers rolled into town and set up camp behind Vashon Village, not too far from The Beachcomber’s office. The sound of their buzzing generators in the July heat meant only one thing: Strawberry Festival is here. If you’ve lived on the island any number of years, you know that Vashon’s annual three-day celebration follows much the same formula each time — parade, booths, carnival, music, fried food, street dance. Whether you relish or have grown weary of these summer staples, don’t overlook some notable new things on the festival scene this year. Chamber director Jim Marsh, who helped plan the festival for the first time just last year, has been working round the clock — we know because his office is next to ours. With the help of Chamber stalwart Sue Stinson, the enthusiastic and enterprising new director, who’s often seen sporting fun ties or riding his bike around town, seems to bring a new energy to the annual event. For the first time in years, Chamber organizers have chosen a new company to put on the carnival, promising to mix things up at the family spot. With Pete Welch, featured on this week’s front page, they have also lined up more musical acts than ever. Walking the main drag or the food court in the summer heat could provide some surprises — the Chamber has booked a notably high number of new vendors to occupy the strip. Marsh is even encouraging local merchants to help squelch a common festival complaint and incorporate more strawberries, real or otherwise, into the weekend. Even the heritage association is beefing up its festival efforts, offering the new Miss Lucy Dinner for the second time and also hosting a music stage at the museum, billed as a more laid-back spot that we think many adults will appreciate. The festival, while much the same each summer, also offers a glimpse of who we are as a community at the moment. Last year, same-sex marriage advocates marched in the parade, a show of support for Referendum 74. This year, they’ll watch from the sidelines as a troupe of women dance down the highway for One Billion Rising, a movement protesting violence against women that came to Vashon in the past year. The park district is using the festival as an opportunity to face and maybe bring some closure to a year of tension and anger over the Vashon Fields Project, as all five commissioners have agreed to take part in a light-hearted dunk tank on Saturday. And even the Bill Burby run, a long island tradition, this year is a chance to recognize and honor a beloved high schooler and track athlete who died in the past year. I ventured into the job as General Manager of the Vashon Park District in February because I wanted to make a contribution to our glorious island community and I wistfully imagined my work days filled with strolls along beaches and forest trails, selecting tasteful and eye-catching poolside furniture and thoughtfully considering our future sports stars starting out on green Vashon ball fields. Certainly I had been following the Beachcomber articles and was aware of a problem or two. My Thriftway grocery shopping turned interesting as greetings from friends ranged from “Congratulations,” to “Thank you for taking that on,” to “Are you crazy?” My first 100 days at the park district have been a journey. But I can assure you that each day grows brighter. I am ever so grateful to the park district staff for their willingness to take on new tasks, work through issues and help me along the steep learning curve. The financial picture, too, promises positive cash flow at the end of the year, a balanced budget and internal controls and record-keeping that any state auditor would be proud of (thanks to many hard hours and exemplary system management from our accounting contractor, Marie Browne). Budget updates and cash flow statements are posted online on the park district website. Although the park district has had to implement considerable restructuring and belt-tightening this year with a smaller levy base, fewer staff and tighter controls, we move forward with numerous successes. The pool is open full time through the summer with swimming lessons, lap swim, and open swim. Special events will take place throughout Strawberry
COMMUNITY By ELAINE OTT Festival with games and special prizes. The park district has partnered with the Quartermaster Yacht Club for Sailing Camp starting this month. The Concert in the Park series got off to a wet start with the O Space graciously taking in the devoted fans of the Sarah Christine Collective during a rainstorm last month. Incendio drew a crowd of over 300 at Ober Park on July 5. Mark your calendars for upcoming concerts by Billy Joe and the Dusty 45s, Picoso and Shakespeare in the Park. The park district has once again partnered with the Vashon Island Growers Association for the bustling Saturday Market every Saturday throughout the summer at Village Green. The skate park (Burton Adventure Recreation Center) is now open summer hours with an indoor skate park, disc golf, “beach” volleyball and BMX trail riding. Vashon Watersports at Jensen Point is open through the summer for kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle boards, and will soon add bike rentals. But what discussion of the Park District would be complete without mentioning the VES Fields? Despite considerable controversy over the past four years, I invite you to take a look. Former islander remembers a great race Here it is, Monday of Strawberry Festival week and, for the first time in 24 years I won’t be there. Natives of West Seattle, my wife LoAnne and I moved to our home on Maury June 10, 1989, partly so our then sixthgrade son Andrew could be in a better public school system and partly because home prices were considerably lower on Vashon way back then. Because our wedding anniversary fell during festival week that year, and we had already made plans for the weekend, we missed much of Festival that first year and I did not enter the K2 Run, as it was called then. Since then I have either run in or photographed what is now the Bill Burby Run every year until this one. We left the island June 10, 24 years to the day, to move to Estes Park, Colorado, to be closer to Andrew and his family. We arrived here June 12, four days before our new home
town’s annual run, and with stress of moving and the change in elevation, 7,522 feet above sea level, I wasn’t ready for a race, so I don’t get a home town race this year. On Saturday, I will be thinking of all my Vashon friends doing the Burby and looking to see the results online. I want to wish the best of luck to everyone running and walking, and especially to Kevin Ross, it’s time for another overall win; and to my old high school classmate Jim Price, who was gracious enough to run the 10K and give me a chance for a 70-plus age group win in the 5K. Since the 70-plus division was established, Jim and I have each won our respective groups twice. Andy Sears and the race committee put on a great race. May it continue forever. I’m looking forward to seeing some photos next week and reading names of friends in the official results. And next year I may be able to send The Beachcomber some results from the Estes Park Marathon, 10K and 5K.

Touring on a bicycle makes for exercises with some surprises Strange things happen on a cross-country bike trip

If you are one of my avid readers, then both of you know that last month I wrote an article encouraging everyone to get out and ride a bike. If you have taken my advice, you may notice a bit more pep in your step, staircases are now more of a convenience than an obstacle and the bathroom scale may be a little less scary. You may also be thinking, “What’s the next step? What is the ultimate in cycling?” When I initially asked myself that question, I thought racing a bicycle professionally was the be-all and end-all of the cycling world. With the scads of money, public adulation and incredibly fit groupies, I’d be crazy not to do it. Then someone rudely listed off what was involved in becoming a pro: years of training, hundreds of thousands of miles riding, lots of suffering and innate talent. I noticed the list did not include overeating, overdrinking and oversleeping — the things I’m good at — so I said “To hell with that” and turned to cyclo-tourism. Cyclo-tourism is a fancy word for exploring on a bicycle. A bike offers the joy and freedom of traveling across a continent or a county with a slow enough
pace to smell the roses, yet fast enough to smell a lot of roses. But why bicycle touring? To paraphrase a quote from one of my favorite movies, “You shall see thangs, wonderful to tell. And, oh, so many startlements.” Hands down, one of the most interesting thangs to tell from my time touring on a bike are stories of the kindness of strangers. I have had the good fortune to meet people who have opened up their homes to a weary traveler. On many occasions, people have bought me a meal just to hear about my journey. I even had patrons in a small German hotel pay a taxi driver to take me out to see the local nightlife. The cabbie took me around until the wee hours of the morning and wouldn’t accept a penny. All of these people were incredibly gracious, while knowing full well I would be on my way the next day and could never repay their kindness. And every now and then, there are startlements that are downright, well, startling. On my very first bike tour, as
a teenager, I was riding from Nashville to Toronto. My uncle advised me not to ride through Detroit, as even in the 80s it was considered an apocalyptic hellscape where I would surely be murdered. Instead I was advised to take the Wyndotte ferry just south of the Motor City. When I reach the marina, I saw the harbor patrol office but no ferry. I went inside and asked the officer where to catch the boat. He told me it ran through Detroit now. Looking at my crestfallen face, he asked me what was wrong and I explained about my impending death, the apocalyptic hellscape and so on. He tapped his pen on his desk for a second and said, “Tell you what, some guy got himself drowned and we are going out on a recovery. We can just take you across to Canada.” A few minutes later, as we were loading my bike in their boat, a crew member came up holding a six-foot pipe with three giant hooks dangling from it. He saw my quizzical look and said, “we use this to drag the bottom for the body.” He also saw my almost suppressed shudder because he raised a sneaky eyebrow and said, “Do you want to go to Canada before or after?” “Hmm,” I thought. “Riding across the water sitting next to an impaled corpse. As much fun as that sounds, I really need to get on with my day.” I asked to be put
ashore before. With my exhilarating boat ride over and my bike hoisted up to the dock, the harbor patrol officer stood up to light a refreshing menthol cigarette. I looked around and said, “Don’t I need to tell Canada that, you know, I’m here?” Twin plumes of exhaust came out his nose as he wrote a number on a pack of matches. “Find a pay phone and call this number.” I offered many thanks and with handshakes all around set out to find a rotary dial, landline telephone (kids ask your parents what those were.) After a few rings, a bureaucratic voice answered and I explained my situation. “Have you anything to declare?” he asked. Still a teenager, I was not wise in the ways of international travel and had no idea what he was asking me. After an awkward silence I blurted out, “I declare this is a very nice country!” He laughed as much as customs agents are allowed to and told me to have a nice day. That was border crossing back in the good ol’ days. So, my friends, keep your wheels turning and point your handlebars to a distant horizon. All park users should be respected During the set-up of the XTERRA triathlon, one person on a horse was openly hostile to the mountain bikers on the Dockton trails and to the organizers and participants in the parking lot across from the marina. We were also riding horses and were appalled at how the plastic tapes that were set up for the race were torn down and even dragged down the trails. I felt sorry for the poor woman who had to re-mark miles of trail at the eleventh hour! I believe everyone should use the trails and that an organization’s event should be respected. When events are organized by runners, equestrians, or tri-athletes, the King County Parks
workers do a phenomenal job keeping the trails clean, benefiting ALL users! Why can’t we appreciate each other? Why can’t we all respect one group of users staging an event for one day a year? Over 100 participants, some from out of state, came to enjoy our beautiful trails. I resent this rider gave so many people a negative impression of Vashon horse people. Linda Kozak

We just got a refinance on our home which went well. But we had never read our title policy before and the lender pointed out that we have an easement along one side of our property to allow for a driveway to the undeveloped land behind our lot. I was so shocked and upset! If anyone ever decides to build back there we will lose a huge part of our property and privacy. I think it’s a 20 foot wide easement. Is there any way to fight this?
A:
Such egress and ingress easements are common on Vashon and in most rural areas. If it’s a properly written legal easement then there isn’t much you can do. You should speak to one of the attorneys for the title company to be sure it’s defendable. You can also check with a good real estate attorney. I’m sure your lender was trying to be helpful but you shouldn’t just settle for his opinion. Since you’re lucky that no one has actually built the road, you have time to do some major landscaping. Have a survey done so that you know exactly where the boundary of your property is and where the easement is located. You can then plant fast growing trees and bushes a few feet back from that potential driveway. Fast growing plants can screen the future road so that at least you don’t have to see it. If you’re lucky, it might be many years before that parcel’s developed.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue celebrated the graduation of the 2013 Firefighter Recruit Academy on Saturday, June 29, at the Vashon Theatre. The new volunteer firefighters are Avio Brooklyn, Stephen Bussell, Raechel Ehlers, Ted Evans, Lance Garland, Matt Geiger and Tony Puz. The graduates completed 280 hours of classroom and hands-on training and testing that led to certifications for Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations. As part of their training, they spent a weekend at the state academy for search and rescue and live fire training and five days for hazardous materials. Prior to the participating in the academy, they completed the VIFR Emergency Medical Technician Academy and became certified EMTs. During the ceremony, Cari Coll, the Battalion Chief of Training and Academy Director, presented award plaques. Tony Puz received the award for class Valedictorian. The Outstanding Recruit award, voted on by the academy instructors, was given to Avio Brooklyn. The recruits and instructors voted for Ted Evans to receive the Leadership Award. For Favorite Instructor the recruits chose Paul Schuster. The graduates are now doing duty shifts on Vashon. Strawberry Festival name a reminder of another era on Vashon Festival has had different names, contested first year By BRUCE HAULMAN For The Beachcomber
As an island historian, I am repeatedly asked why Vashon has a Strawberry Festival when there are no large strawberry farms on the island and, except for the Rotary Club strawberry shortcake booth (which imports its strawberries to the island), there are usually no strawberries at the festival. The first strawberries were commercially grown on Vashon in 1890, and by 1901 15,000 crates of strawberries were shipped off the island. Eight years later, in 1909, 120,000 crates were shipped from the island. At this point, strawberries were an important commercial crop for island farmers and would remain
important until increased competition from California berries, changes in work laws for pickers and the retirement of many older farmers led to the collapse of large-scale commercial strawberry farming on Vashon by the early 1980s. During the 1890s into the early 1900s, there were occasional festivals held at different communities around the island, but there does not seem to have been any island-wide festivals because Vashon was still largely a collection of isolated water-based communities with few connecting roads. To celebrate the rise of the strawberry, the first Strawberry Festival was held in 1909. It was not until 1912 that it became an annual event sponsored by the Vashon Federation of Clubs. Thus, we have two contenting dates for the first Strawberry Festival, 1909 and 1912. At about the same time, strawberry festi-
vals began in many other Puget Sound communities, including Bellevue, Burien, Burlington, Marysville and Richmond Beach. In 1923, Miss Melissa Jaynes was crowned the first Strawberry Queen when she was 101 years old. This began the tradition of an annual Strawberry Queen, which morphed into Miss Vashon and continued into the 1972, when the last Miss Vashon was selected. In 1923, the fifth annual Vashon-Maury Island Strawberry Festival was held at Ellisport and drew over 2,500 attendees. This means the first annual festival would have been held in 1919, which creates issues with the 1909 and the 1912 “first� dates. In 1926, the Strawberry Festival was moved to Vashon town, where it has remained except for the early 1950s when the festival parade went from north to south and ended at Vashon High School.

The Grand Parade and crowds fill Vashon town at last year’s festival. During World War II, the festival was suspended to support the war effort. After the war, the festival was restarted in 1946, when its name was changed to the Peach Festival, as peaches had become an important crop. The peach blight in 1948 and 1949 ended that short run, and in 1949 it was called the Vashon Festival, until it changed to the Harvest Festival in 1951, and then from 1952 until 1983 it was named the Island Festival. In 1958, the Vashon Chamber of Commerce was prepared to drop its support of the Island Festival because of a “lack of enthusiasm� for the event. However, cooler heads prevailed and the Jaycees sponsored the Island Festival until it was
renamed the Strawberry Festival in 1984, which it has remained ever since. This year there are few commercially grown strawberries on the island and there will be few strawberries at the festival, except for the Rotary Club strawberry shortcake and for the original Marshall Strawberries sold by the Friends of Mukai. Still, as we prepare to celebrate either the 104th or the 101st or the 94th Strawberry Festival (depending on your preference for “first dates�), we will all celebrate the Vashon Strawberry Festival in our own unique Vashon way. — Bruce Haulman is an island historian. and now fines for those who haven’t acted seem reasonable. She said about 80 people — including some who currently have boats in Quartermaster and some who don’t — have applied to keep mooring buoys in the harbor. Knauss said he estimated that about 30 boats currently moored in the harbor don’t have pending buoy applications and will be issued citations this month. “If this helps get the world out for them to put in a mooring buoy application, then that’s good,” Randlette said. Randlette and other DNR officials say that in recent years the state has grown increasingly concerned about the condition of Quartermaster Harbor, part of the protected Maury Island Aquatic Reserve. The number of boats in the harbor has grown significantly, and today the bay contains clusters of boats that are too close together, abandoned buoys that pose navigational hazards, anchors that drag and damage the underwater habitat and a handful of derelict and deteriorating boats. The state has received complaints from boaters and waterfront residents concerned about the state of the harbor, an important habitat for spawning forage fish and wintering birds. And from time to time, a boat has broken loose from its moorage or sunk. The state, in turn, has historically not enforced licensing regulations in Quartermaster, leading to a laissez-faire attitude among boaters. When DNR began its planning a couple years ago, only a handful of the buoys in the harbor were properly licensed. Since then, DNR officials crafted a plan to create three new buoy fields — at Burton, Dockton and the mouth of Judd Creek — where boat owners will be required to

moor their boats on registered buoys. The state also plans to remove abandoned buoys and other debris in the harbor and require boat owners to install new environmentally friendly anchor systems. Several derelict boats and a large, deteriorating dock-like structure at Dockton have already been removed as part of the efforts. Pending county approval, DNR plans to issue buoy licenses for the specific locations in the harbor by the end of the year. While drafting the plan, Randlette said, DRN performed extensive outreach to warn islanders of the impending changes, holding several public meetings, collecting feedback, contacting known buoy owners and posting notices on boats and buoys. “We reached a lot of the community and we reached a lot of the boat owners, and those people who showed at meetings by and large have put in applications,” Randlette said. “That’s not to say there aren’t more people on the island who have buoys who just didn’t tie into the public process.” Knauss said the sheriff’s office has been aware of the growing number of unregistered boats and buoys in the harbor in recent years and could have issued fines at any time, but hasn’t done so for several years. The agency has worked with DNR on its plan and is now issuing the citations because most boat owners have been reached, Knauss said, and because the number of boats in the harbor continues to grow. About three years ago, Knauss said, his department counted about 20 boats in the harbor. Sheriff’s office officials recently counted more than 60 boats there, almost all of them unregistered. “You can’t just ignore the rules. Even though it’s been three summers, we can’t keep growing and growing,” he said. “What’s it going to be next summer?”

Couples who play together, stay together on Vashon stages By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD Staff Writer
B
eginning in 1928, Broadway legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne set the bar on what it meant to be a theatrical power couple, refusing for the next 32 years to appear on stage separately. But three island duos — all appearing in Drama Dock’s next production — might have a few things to teach even the Lunts about living happily ever after, both onstage and off. All three married couples — Marshall and Stephanie Murray, Phil Dunn and Stephen Floyd, and Gordon Millar and Patricia Kelly — are members of the 18-member cast of Drama Dock’s upcoming musical, “Into the Woods,” opening on Friday at Bethel Church. The show, by revered Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, is a much-loved musical mashup of fairy tales including Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and others. The show’s director, Charlotte Tiencken — an islander who works by day as the managing director of Seattle’s Book-It Repertory Theatre — said she didn’t set out to cast so many couples in the show. “It wasn’t intentional,” Tiencken said. “But it’s a play about love and relationships and people working together for a common goal, so it fits perfectly.” Tiencken mentioned that she has also enjoyed working with another duo in the show — brother and sister twins Ellie and Isaac Hughes, who play Red Riding Hood and Jack in the show. (Full disclosure: In yet another twist of kinship, the writer of this article is the twins’ mother.) “It’s really cool to have this family thing going,” she said. The Murrays play a married couple in the show, a hapless baker and his wife, whose misadventures tie together many of the threads in the show. Floyd, who is well known in the community as the drama teacher at Vashon

For Marshall and Stephanie Murray, who have been married since 2007, “Into the Woods” is the latest in a series of collaborations. The pair acted together in several professional shows in Portland, and since moving to Vashon, they’ve appeared in “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Black Comedy,” “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now
Change” and “Side by Side by Sondheim” together. Stephanie Murray said it’s always a joy to tread the boards with her husband. “There’s nothing like being on stage with someone you share your life with,” she said. Marshall described the pleasures of drawing on his wife’s expertise to help him deepen his understanding of the show. “We’re able to give feedback and go back and forth about how to make our characters stronger,” he said. The only challenge of being in “Into the Woods” together, Stephanie said, was that

the couple they portray in the show has a much more turbulent relationship than their own. “Our characters bicker a lot, and argue, but we don’t,” Stephanie said. “We communicate extremely well.” Floyd and Dunn, who have been together for 31 years and were legally wed in California in 2008, have also forged a life together both onstage and off. Even the beginning of their romance had a distinctly theatrical flair: On their first dates, Floyd helped Dunn practice his lines for a University of Louisville production of “Romeo and Juliet,” with Dunn, appropriately enough, playing the role of Romeo. “If you saw it in a movie, you would think, no, that’s too stupid to believe,” Floyd said. After all these years, Floyd said he is still wowed by Dunn’s stage work. “I’m always excited to watch him rehearse and perform,” he said. “He’s the most interesting, clever actor I know.” Like the other couples in “Into the Woods,” Patricia Kelly and Gordon Millar have also appeared in many shows together. In the nine years they’ve been married, they’ve done six shows together, Millar said. The only problem with the arrangement, Kelly joked, is that things tend to fall apart on the home front during the times they are both rehearsing and performing a show. “I often wish I had a husband or a wife here to take care of us — it’s like, who’s going to do the shopping?” she said, with a laugh. “It’s just the logistics, but we make it work.” “Into the Woods” opens Friday night — performances will take place July 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 and 28 at the Bethel Church. ARTS BRIEFS Flamenco is coming back to Vashon The passionate strains of flamenco music and dance will return to Vashon in a show slated for 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Vashon-Maury Grange Hall. The event, the kickoff of a five-state tour of a concert called “Girasoles” (the Spanish word for sunflowers), will feature noted Seattle flamenco dancer Savannah Fuentes, joined by singer Jesus Montoya, of Sevilla, Spain, and Bulgarian guitarist Bobby de Sofia. Jacob Bain brings two bands to festival shows Hometown musical hero Jacob Bain is bringing both his well-known bands to town this weekend. At 9:30 p.m. Friday, Bain’s Troll’s Cottage will play a show at Red Bicycle Bistro, bringing its trademark blend of hypnotic dance music to the first night of the Strawberry Festival weekend. Young athlete fights his way to the top By SARAH SCHWARZ

Twelve-year-old Adrian St. Germain didn’t miss a single wrestling practice this year, and sometimes attended two practices in one day, says coach Per Lars Blomgren. His dedication paid off this summer when Adrian won first place in his age group and weight class at The West Kids & Cadet Regional Championships held in Pocatello, Idaho, placing him among the top youth wrestlers in the country. The June competition included wrestlers from the 11 westernmost states, Blomgren said. Blomgren has coached Adrian since he began wrestling. “The coaches are a huge support system to all of my boys outside of wrestling too,” said his mother, Sarah St. Germain. Adrian began wrestling when he was four years old and was adopted by Sarah. He was an extremely energetic child, she said. Sarah already had two sons in the Rockbusters wrestling club, and it ended up being a natural fit for Adrian. “Everything he did, he rolled or crawled,” said Sarah. “Not because he couldn’t walk, but just because he couldn’t keep himself still.” Blomgren, his coach, saw Adrian’s talent from day one, he said. “He has many strengths. His natural talent is exceptional,” Blomgren said. “I also think his work in the last year is really notable.” Adrian still wrestlers with the Rockbusters, but is also part of the McMurray Middle School team during the wrestling season. During the off-season, he practices with the Vashon High School team. Adrian said said he chooses to wrestle because “I’m good at it, it’s fun and I have friends who do it.” He added that it keeps him in shape and the coaches are great. The young athlete’s interests go beyond the mat. He plays football and basketball, and in the past has played lacrosse, baseball and soccer. “The only sports he isn’t good at are Frisbee and bowling,” Sarah said. “Being the youngest of three boys has something to do with it,” she added. Through talking briefly with Adrian, it is clear he does not like to lose. While he enjoys some team sports, Adrian thrives off the independence of wrestling, Sarah said. “With wrestling, if you lose, you can’t blame anyone but yourself,” Sarah said. Adrian’s goal for high school wrestling is “to go undefeated

He would also like to go to Reno, because “there is a sort of big competition there,” he said. “I would just like to see him keep on improving and doing what he’s doing,” Blomgren said. “He can do some very special things.”
While most people associate the Fourth of July with fireworks and hot dogs, this year a few Vashon Island Junior Crew members swapped the dogs for the Independence Day Regatta (IDR) in Philadelphia, a high-level competition at a storied venue and the birthplace of US competitive rowing. Taegan Lynch is spending a significant portion of the summer before her senior year rowing with a Penn Athletic Club program on the Schuylkill River, the site of the regatta. She competed in the IDR in a four and an eight. In both competitions, her boat reached the final race out of a field of more than 40 entrants, placing fourth and sixth, respectively. Staffed by former Romanian world champion rowers, the program was short on syllables and long on effort. The first week of three-a-day training sessions included over 150 kilometers of rowing. The first moments of the camp came with the instruction “You do 2K,” meaning rowers should complete a timed 2,000-meter race on the ergometer the very first day. Call was introduced to the single at this camp and found a new passion for this solo event. At IDR, he raced in a single and double and reached the semi-final race in the double. He also stroked an eight (not expected to be a strong boat from a camp made up of competitive scullers) to a first-place finish in the semifinal and a third overall place in the junior eight final. Senior Maya Krah was selected for a US Rowing High Performance camp on the basis of her impressive 2K erg scores this past year. In fact, it is rumored that at the Brentwood Regatta on Vancouver Island this spring, Krah bested all challengers (regardless of gender) at arm wrestling. The High Performance camp is being held at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, and Krah reported that she already feels close to her fellow rowers there. “Immediately upon arriving at camp, I felt a connection to each of the other rowers who traveled to be a part of this

team.” she said. “Working so hard created a dedication and total bond, not only to my teammates, but also to my boathouse, the dorms and the terrible heat.” Call also reports that he has made friends of the impressive rowers who came together from around the country, and they will likely keep in touch over social media. Krah, Lynch and Bryn Gilbert — who has been rowing this summer at a program at the University of Washington — met up last weekend in Camden, New Jersey, for Junior Club Nationals. In addition to invaluable racing experience and building bonds with rowers from around the country, Gilbert and Lynch will return home from nationals with bronze medals in the eight and four, respectively.

each event, all accessible with a few clicks of a mouse. But for Shirk and Welch, the new venture is about much more than simply providing publicity for upcoming shows. “Vashon Events was formed to build and enrich the community,” Shirk said. “We want to support island businesses and artists by helping to promote happenings and creating events that bring folks together.” To that end, Vashon Events has also begun to present its own shows, including a slate of concerts at Nirvana Restaurant and singer/songwriter showcases at the Red Bicycle Bistro. Another upcoming event, also at the Red Bicycle, will welcome Vashon musicians to the stage to perform songs from two albums: “Rubber Soul,” by the Beatles, and “Nashville Skyline,” by Bob Dylan. “The lineup [to perform the songs on the two albums] is amazing, I can’t wait for that,” said Welch, who seems to have met and hung out with almost every musician on Vashon during the 13 years he has lived on the island. Welch and Shirk, under the banner of Vashon Events, have also curated Vashon’s popular free summer concert
series in Ober Park, working in tandem with Vashon Allied Arts and Vashon Park District, and they’ve been hired to book music at 50 North, a Seattle restaurant owned by Melinda Sontgerath, who also owns The Hardware Store Restaurant. Welch — an experienced music promoter — has taken a lead role in Vashon’s upcoming Strawberry Festival, booking dozens of music acts for seven of the eight festival stages. He’s particularly proud of this year’s youth stage, a place where more than 30 young island performers, ranging from singers to theatre artists, will present shows during the festival. “We’re always trying to figure out what we can do for the kids,” he said. Shirk, who makes her living as a busy grantwriter, has also been motivated to create opportunities for young people to both enjoy and perform in the arts on Vashon. She said that while writing a grant to help make Vashon a drug-free community, she discovered that young people on the island had a hard time finding out about all-ages events. “From there, the idea of a community bulletin board sprang up,” she said. Another aim of Vashon Events is to assist local bands in

expanding their audiences. “We want to help bands build their social media and press packs so that they can get more gigs and follow their dreams,” Shirk said. Shirk, a singer/songwriter who has played numerous gigs in Seattle, is able to provide a personal testimonial about her partner’s ability to make things happen for musicians. She met Welch a few years ago, she said, after she approached him about helping her promote her music. Now the pair, who share a house and a life together, are hoping to attract more visitors and sponsors to their website. Both said making money from the site wasn’t a priority for now, but they would like to at least break even with the costs of maintaining it. To that end, they’ve added a virtual tip jar where visitors can make one-time or monthly donations to keep the website up and running. And in the meantime, the two are both spending a lot of time in front of their home office computers. A few weeks ago, Welch left a Seattle job he had held for almost two decades, working for a Seattle specialty clothing company. But despite the fact that he no longer has a lengthy commute, he says he’s busier than ever. “I really don’t know how I did any of this before,” he said.

— the animal care, maintenance, milking, processing, marketing and merchandising. Sheard has taken on a partner as Café Luna so she can place more focus on the dairy. Another challenge is the business end — making the enterprise pencil out. “One thing we didn’t realize was how difficult it would be to make the finances work,” Dilworth said. The debt load from establishing the infrastructure was not insubstantial. Each cow costs $2,000. Then there are vet bills, certification fees and more. “Just like any business, this is the beginning, and you start out in debt,” Sheard, the veteran business owner, said. They charge $7 for a half-gallon of milk, almost twice the cost of a carton of organic milk at a Vashon grocery store. Some assume that “we must be making a lot of money,” Sheard said. “But in reality we’re just trying to catch up.” The goals are to reach the point where they’re selling eight gallons of milk a day, and then when the aged cheeses are ready to sell, start piecing together a sustainable operation. To augment the farm-stand income, they host fundraising summer brunches on the farm, where they showcase their aged cheeses, farm produce and eggs and other milk products, along with Dilworth’s baked goods.
This clearly isn’t a dairy as strict commerce, in the way that makes sense to a loan officer at the Farm Credit Bank. And the women realize Cornerstone Farm might not be truly sustainable as a business. But Sheard and Dilworth feel Vashon is the ideal setting for their product. “People here are incredible,” Sheard said. “They appreciate good food, and they actually understand a $7 bottle of milk.” What’s more, they’re sanguine about the patience required of them. Milk has gotten kicked over, but “that’s normal,” Dilworth said. “We understand the phrase much better, ‘Don’t cry over spilt milk,’ because you really want to cry when the entire bucket you just spent squirting out one little bit at a time is wasted.” “We produce the best dairy products I’ve ever tasted,” Sheard added. “I just love the things we get to make. I wish I had 100 acres.” Cornerstone Dairy’s farm stand, located at the corner of S.W. 204th Street and Monument Road S.W., is open year round. In addition to milk, they also sell eggs, produce and honey at the farm stand. Minglement currently carries their milk and will carry their aged cheese as soon as it is ready.
Al Zumbrun August 19, 1926 - May 29, 2013 Al never met a stereotype - it didn’t matter what race, gender, nationality or religion you were, when he met you he offered his hand and his name, asked you yours, and made sure he knew a fact or two about you before he left. If you were, by his standards, decent, honest and kind, you had his friendship. Al was born and raised in Utica, NY. He had his first job at age ten during the Depression, stocking shelves for the corner grocery store and bringing his pay home to his mother. Al’s first great love was baseball. When he was eleven there were no youth teams in Utica, no Little League. So, he put an ad in the paper asking for boys who wanted to play and dads who were willing to ump - and organized the first youth league in the city. Eventually, Al built a reputation as a pitcher, and he was offered contracts by both the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians. Unfortunately, Al was scheduled to ship out two weeks later in order to serve in WWII. He was on the USS Westmoreland, when an injury to his pitching hand ended all possibility of a baseball career. Al was in the Pacific when the bombs were dropped on Nagasaki, and was one of several who chose to go ashore two days later. The devastation forever changed his feelings about war. Back home in Utica, Al found the second love of his life - Dorothy Sheehan. Though they were married for over fifty years at the time she passed (eleven years before him), to the day she died he never referred to her as anything except his “bride.” A stroke took Al on the evening of May 29th. Death was instantaneous, and as far as anyone can tell, painless. To the moment of his death he was independent and helpful – he died walking over to bring the Thriftway coupon book to his family. Al is survived by his son-in-laws, Michael Sandahl and Steve Jones, by his daughters Debbie Sandahl and Wintry Sheehan, his beloved grandson Josh Sandahl and granddaughter-in-law Randa and great-grandchildren Olivia and Patrick, and beloved granddaughter Gabi Rain Freeman-Sheehan. Al adamantly refused to have a memorial service, but if you would like to do something in his name please consider a contribution to the Vashon Wilderness Program’s Scholarship Fund. Al was a passionate supporter of the program, and volunteered with them from the time of their inception to the day of his death. Or, simply, when you think of Al, take just a few moments out of your day and offer your hand and name to a stranger. Al always said he’d be happy if the only thing on his headstone was “See you later, alligator.” After a while, crocodile.
