Vashon’s celebration has something for everyone By JIM MARSH

On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce board and staff, welcome to the 104th annual Strawberry Festival. For over a century, islanders have been putting on a massive celebration for each other and inviting friends and family to the island to join in. For three days, downtown Vashon teems with unique vendors, music, art, food, parades and fun. Great memories are created during the festival. Several island traditions continue, as well as new things happening, so the festival has something for everyone. Use this guide to plan your weekend so you get a chance to do it all.
Music There is something about being on an island that inspires people to play

It is a very real possibility that the person bagging your groceries, taking your food order or giving you a quote on insurance rates is an amazing musician, and the Strawberry Festival is a great place to see them shine. We have added more music on Friday night at the Beer Garden, another street dance, music at the new Heritage Stage and expanded hours on stages
throughout the weekend. Check out the back half of this guide for all the artists and bands playing throughout the festival.
Art It is said that people on Vashon are inspired by the beauty that surrounds them, for the island is home to an extraordinary number of accomplished artists. Vashon artists are featured at the Vashon Town Square just north
Food is everywhere during the festival. Not only do we feature local restaurants and producers, but we invite amazing vendors that are unique and interesting for you to try. Whatever you have a taste for, you can find it during the festival.
Fun The festival is a great place to be a kid, no matter what your age. We have parades, games, family friendly stages, the Firefighter Challenge, free train rides, a carnival and a youth music stage.
Vashon used to be covered in strawberry fields, and before the second world war the island was a major producer and shipper of the fruit. The strawberry fields are gone, but the festival lives on. This year many of our local merchants, artists and restaurants are bringing the strawberry back to the festival, so check them out and have a great time. A carnival and more for kids The Strawberry Festival brings out the kid in all of us. But for those who are genuinely children, there is plenty to do. Kids young and old can ride the Kiddie Train up and down the festival thoroughfare, saving energy for the carnival rides and amusements located behind Vashon Village. This year a new company is putting on the Strawberry Festival Carnival, and festival organizers say it is sure to bring new energy to this popular family spot. The carnival will open Thursday night at 6 p.m., and families that bring four cans of food to donate to the food bank get $10 off a sheet of 40 tickets. The carnival will also be open 3 to 10 p.m Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. There will also be a fun new activity in the main festival area this year. At Bubble Fun, located in the Vashon Physical Therapy parking
The Strawberry Festival thoroughfare on Vashon Highway is a fun and busy place all weekend. Festival organizers expect more than 150 booths this year, selling clothes, trinkets, household items and much more. Other booths will be staffed by members of Vashon nonprofits and civic organizations. Organizers say many favorite booths are returning, and there are an unusually large number of new options this year as well. More than 30 food booths will offer a wide variety of dining and snacking choices. New from off-island this year are 314 Pie, Ballard Brothers Seafood and Burgers and more. Look for the strawberry-shaped “homegrown vendor” signs at some of the booths, representing Vashon products and organizations. In all, about half of the festival booths are from Vashon and about half are from off-island.

lot, festival-goers of any age can walk on water inside 6-foot inflatable balls. The balls are easy to use — walk, jump, roll and float with other people in a giant inflatable pool.
The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association will put on the second annual Miss Lucy Dinner in honor of Melissa Lucy James, who became Strawberry Festival Queen in 1923 at the age of 104. The buffet-style dinner, a fundraiser for VMIHA from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the museum, will include fried chicken, corn on the cob, Caesar salad, rolls and strawberry shortcake. Tickets are $20, or $10 for kids 10 and under. Tickets are available at the Vashon Bookshop and at the museum.

It all kicks off with a festive, quirky parade The Grand Parade shows off Vashon’s true colors It has been said that islanders seriously plan for two things: power outages and the Strawberry Festival Grand
Parade. Like island residents, parade floats and performances are always colorful, fun, artistic and quirky. The parade starts with the Children’s Parade and is immediately followed by the Grand Parade. The Grand Parade features

perennial favorites such as the Thriftway Shopping Cart Drill Team, antique tractors, Vashon’s own Ukulele Band and more. You can also expect a few surprises from creative islanders. The Grand Parade starts at 11 a.m. south of town and marches north up Vashon Highway through the heart of the festival grounds. There’s not a bad seat on the route, but musical performances take place at the main intersection at Bank Road and in front of the Pandora’s Box Stage. Kiwanis club offers all-you-can eat pancakes Start your day at the festival with a hearty breakfast for a good cause. Once again, the Kiwanis will offer an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast both Saturday and Sunday morning. The Kiwanis will serve not only pancakes, but strawberries, sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. The
meal is $7 per person or $5 for children under age 12. The breakfast takes place from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday in the Vashon Market IGA parking lot. Proceeds benefit the Kiwanis’ community fund, which supports college scholarships, the food bank and other causes.

See Vashon firefighters in action Watch the men and women from Vashon Island Fire & Rescue show what they’re made of in the Firefighter Challenge, an event that’s become a festival favorite. They’ll race against the clock, donning gear, grabbing hoses, climbing ladders and quelling an imaginary fire, all in the center of town. The Firefighter Challenge takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday in front of the Vashon Pharmacy. But be careful. Spectators have been known to get wet.
This Bill Burby Inspirational Fun Run, now in its 33rd year, will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. by the VYFS PlaySpace. The event, named after a beloved Vashon coach who died in 1989, has become a tradition for many families and includes a 10K race, a 5K race and a 5K walk. This year participants can choose to “Run for Ryan” and donate to the Ryan Krug Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of the high school junior who died in January. The Bill Burby Fun Run Association will donate a 50 percent match to the fund. Registration is $20 for adults and

A good time for adults, too Tunes will fill the Beer Garden The Strawberry Festival’s Beer Garden will again be located on the lawn in front of the Vashon Village, across from the under construction library. No doubt, it will be a hopping scene for adults. The Beer Garden opens at 7 p.m. Friday, when Loose Change, a 10-piece band, takes to the stage. The music continues on Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. (See the music schedule, pages 12 to 18). Microbrews from Western Washington breweries will be on tap, including Vashon’s own local brew, Cliff’s Beer. Vashon’s Palouse Winery will provide red wine. A $5 cover charge gets you into the Beer Garden and on Saturday your armband from the Beer Garden also gets you into the Heritage Stage area as well.
Heritage Stage: A place to unwind Vashon artists will display their work across from Ober Park this year.
Artists put their creativity on display Vashon is an island of artists, and Strawberry Festival is a great place to see and purchase the unique work of artists from Vashon and around the region. This year, the artists have come out of the park (due to the library construction). The lovely spread
of two dozen artists’ booths will be located across the street from Ober Park in the Vashon Town Square parking lot. There you’ll find woodwork, photography, mosaics, pottery, tile work, blown glass, textile art and more. The La Biondo Pizza truck will sell handcrafted pizza there as well.
For the first time this festival weekend, there will be a live music stage behind the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. The Heritage Stage is the place to relax and take a break from the festival crowds. There will be local music, wines from Vashon Winery and food from Snapdragon (see music schedule, pages 12 to 18). There will be music and a pre-festival party open to anyone at 7 p.m. Friday. On Saturday, wine will flow, so it’s 21 and over from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The $5 cover charge also gets you into the Beer Garden on Saturday. The Heritage Museum is also a great place to learn about the island. It will be open to visitors during the festival.

The annual Classic Car Parade takes place at noon on Sunday.
Hot rods and classics on parade The Tom Stewart Memorial Classic Car Parade, which takes place at noon Sunday, features vintage and unique cars from around the region. There are the classics you know and love as well as newfangled and one-ofa-kind rides. After the parade, the cars line up for viewing on Vashon Highway just south of the festival, where visitors can see them up close and talk to their owners. The cars will drive north on Vashon Highway from the old K2 building to Bank Road. Once in town, they loop around to head back south on the highway. The best place to view them is on the highway south of Bank Road or on Bank Road, west of the highway, where spectators can see the cars drive by twice and hear the colorful announcers. The parade is a memorial to the late Tom Stewart, a generous businessman and owner of Misty Isle Farms. This year the Chamber is celebrating Stewart’s legacy by partnering with the food bank for a Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Food Drive. Car owners and participants are encouraged to bring a jar of peanut butter and/or a jar of strawberry jam to donate.

Getting around at the Strawberry Festival and will stay closed for the rest of the festival. In preparation for the Grand Parade, on Saturday at 9 a.m. the Vashon Highway closure will extend to 192nd (at Mom’s Deli) and it will edtend again at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday for the Car Parade. Vashon Highway will open up to 178th after each parade is over. The Bank Road closure will extend to 103rd during both parades as well but will open up to 100th after each parade.
Shuttle service A shuttle bus will serve the north-end ferry terminal from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, dropping riders off at Ober Park. Shuttles will wait for incoming boats at the end of the dock. The last shuttle leaving Ober Park back to the ferry dock will be at 7:30 p.m. both days. A shuttle from the south end ferry will also bring people to the festivities. Shuttles will meet arriving ferries and drop visitors at the Vashon Senior Center. The last shuttle leaving the Vashon Senior Center for the south-end ferry dock will be at 7:30 p.m. A shuttle bus will also run from Agren Park to the Vashon Senior Center on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 6:30 p.m. The last shuttle back to Agren Park will be at 7 p.m. For all shuttles, the cost is $1 each way per person. Bus service Road closures Part of Vashon Highway and many streets around Vashon town close during the Strawberry Festival. Vashon Highway will be closed from Bank Road to Cove Road at 5:30 p.m. Friday through the festival weekend. At 7 p.m. Friday it closes from Bank to 178th and stays closed until 8 p.m. Sunday. Bank Road will be closed between 97th and 100th at 7p.m. Friday

The regular Saturday Metro bus schedule will be in service during festival weekend and will follow a detour around town. Times will vary slightly from the printed schedule. There is no Metro bus service on Vashon on Sundays. Check for complete ferry and bus schedules online or by phone at the following numbers: Washington State Ferries, 888-808-7977, and King County Metro, 5533000.
Parking and permits Festival-goers are encouraged to take a shuttle bus from either ferry dock or Agren Park. Those who drive to town will find parking scarce, and many roads to town will be closed much of the weekend (see Road Closures). A limited number of disabled parking permits will allow some to park closer to town. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 463-6217 to obtain a paid permit to park in the lot at Bank Road and 103rd.
For our pets Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the Strawberry Festival. There will be watering stations for dogs, sponsored by islander and real estate agent JR Crawford. Eight stations will be strategically located throughout the festival. Check out the map, in the center of this guide for the “dog bones” indicating where watering stations are located.

MUSIC Live musical performances at Strawberry Festival run the gamut — from bluesy and twangy to funky and funny. When it comes to music, the festival delivers toe-tapping entertainment on a variety of makeshift stages throughout town. Many of the acts are homegrown, and some performers come from other parts of the region. Several are returning favorites, a few new to Vashon. A youth stage at the Village Green will again be a part of the
scene. And not to be missed are the street dances, when Portage Fill, The Spotlights and One More Mile will get you swinging your partner. This year a new stage at the Heritage Museum is being billed as a place to relax away from the commotion and hear local talent. So hang on to this handy guide and enjoy Vashon’s rich musical traditions. Everyone on this Island, it seems, has a song or two to sing. FRIDAY Beer Garden 7 - 11 p.m. on the lawn in front of Vashon Village
Loose Change 7 - 11 p.m. A longtime Vashon favorite, Loose Change aims to entertain with non-stop danceable tunes and a commanding stage presence. The band’s frontman Troy Kindred is an entertainer in every sense of the word. His infectious energy, enthusiasm and powerful voice get the crowd into the act. Kindred is backed by a tight 10-piece band that includes the big organ sound of keyboards, an inspired lead guitar, solid bass and drums and a dynamic threepiece horn section. The sheer size of Loose Change makes for a big sound and a great stage presence.

One More Mile
Riverbend is made up of many island favorites and plays a mix of country favorites and old-time rock ‘n’ roll with modern twists.
9 p.m. - midnight One More Mile is a Vashon band that has been together for more than three years and this is their first time performing at the new Friday night Street Dance. Still committed to the roots of blues, and branching out into some funk and performing a few originals as well, they really give it their all to make for a show that is talked about the morning after.
Heritage Stage For the first time, there will be a live music stage behind the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. The venue is being tagged as the place to relax with acoustic music and take a break from the festival crowds. Portage Fill Big Band 1- 1:45 p.m. Comprised of about 20 islanders ranging from professional musicians to amateurs, Portage Fill is an island institution, producing some of the best in jazz and swing. It started 38 years ago as a quartet that practiced in Lou Engels’ living room. It now
rehearses twice a month in the Williams Heating garage, thanks to the generosity of Dennis Williams, one of the horn players.
Riverbend 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. RiverBend, a popular island band, includes Paul Colwell, Chuck Roehm, Peter Larsen, Shelly Frankel, Dave Lang, Randy Bruce and Dick Gordon. They play a wide range of instruments, including guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, accordion, harmonica and upright bass, and their songs range from traditional, old-time country favorites to new twists on old-time rock ’n’ roll. All of the members have played in several other bands; Paul Colwell is particularly well-known for his role in Up With People.

Cami is a singer-songwriter from Vashon Island with an inviting voice and a style best described as indie/folk-pop. Both passionate and authentic, Cami’s songs about life, relationships, hardship and hope are easy to relate to.
5:30 - 6:15 p.m. Rumor Has It is an island band that includes some of Vashon’s most prolific musicians — Roger Taylor on guitar and vocals; Steve Amsden on guitar, banjo and vocals; Gen Amsden on vocals; Kevin Almeida playing bass and singing, Paul Colwell playing mandolin and singing; Sarah Perlman playing fiddle and singing; Larry Lawson playing flutes, harmonica and singing; and Dan Bruce playing drums and — you guessed it — singing. The band plays bluegrass, Motown, Celtic rock, blues rock, country rock and more.

The Blue Tracks are a roadhouse blues-rock band based in Seattle. With strong female vocals, the band is Etta James meets The Black Keys. They offer a modern sound with a classic rock structure. Members of the band come from a variety of musical backgrounds, each bringing their own unique sound, from punk to classical.

Harmonious Wail 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.
1:50 - 2:25 p.m. Vashon Island resident and solo artist Chuck vanNorman has been playing guitar, singing and songwriting for more than 20 years. Playing mostly original works, he incorporates a variety of picking, fingering and rhythmic techniques on acoustic guitar while using a broad range of vocal styles. Chuck’s most recent collaborations on Vashon include Jump Track and “vanNorman.”
Phil Royal 3:20 - 3:55 p.m. Because Phil Royal was, at age 11, small and of only average wit, he started strumming the guitar in a bid to be noticed by the girls. Forty one years later, he is still trying to impress his wife. Although he has no durable insight into the nature of life or who we are to each other, he claims to have caught rare glimpses where music was involved. He is known to despair that all of these melodic and lyrical efforts are but a glorious and frivolous waste of time but, then, moments of transcendent ecstasy are otherwise hard to come by. He is thus wedded to fingerstyle six-string until time stiffens his fingers and robs his mind.

John jokes that his musical career has been one long, downward spiral to this present time, but those who have heard him know differently. A bluesman and guitarist with a political edge, he’s had a remarkable career over the years, opening for the likes of Frank Zappa, Lenny Bruce, Dan Hicks, The Dead, The Doors, The Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Country Joe & the Fish. Today, he’s a beloved Islander who often performs with the Church of Great Rain.
Harmonious Wail has caught numerous listeners by surprise during its more than 20-year history. Drawing from the rich influence of the European gypsy musicians, most notably Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli (creators of the gypsy swing genre), Harmonious Wail pushes the boundaries of that genre with the intoxicating vocals of Maggie Delaney-Potthoff.
Geordie’s Byre 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. The name of this band comes from an old Scottish song called “The Muckin’ of Geordie’s Byre,” which roughly translates as “cleaning the cow poop out of George’s cow barn.” The band started in 1999, an offshoot of the Vashon Celtic Players. Geordie’s Byre spent their formative years performing at parties, weddings and the Irish pub Tir Na Nog. This band has a grand time playing and singing jigs, reels, waltzes and various other tunes from the old country.
The Joe Panzetta Band 3:45 - 4:30 p.m. Joe Panzetta is a Vashon-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer. He performs original songs on guitar, banjo and harmonium, singing melodic ballads with a signature percussive guitar style. Panzetta will be joined by Kim Thal on violin and vocals and Steve Meyer on bass. Panzetta has been recording and performing music since 1989 when he started the band Big Sky with Peter Mulvey, and has released seven CDs. Panzetta has composed numerous pieces of music for Dominique Gabella shows in the past.
Fendershine 4:45 - 5:30 p.m. Fendershine is rock and roll at the core, layered with sounds of passion, melancholy and rebellion. With their varied musical backgrounds, Fendershine’s members create unique compositions that bring to mind that brief time between night and day, when colors bend in the sky and anything is possible.

Kimo Muraki 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. Kimo Muraki was born in Honolulu and moved to the mainland at an early age. He is one of the Northwest’s most talented and well-respected musicians/multi-instrumentalists. Kimo has been teaching music in the Seattle area for quite some time and is a founding member of New Sol Tribe, Marmalade and Surrealized and also currently performs with Tiny Messengers.

Delilah Pearl & The Mantarays 3:15 - 4 p.m. Delilah Pearl and The Mantarays perform sultry ballads and jazzy rousers from the era of the divas: Peggy Lee, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald. Delilah sizzles in front on vocals, backed by Vashon musicians Greg Dember on piano, Michael Whitmore on guitar, Toliver Goering on bass and Dodd Johnson on drums.

Impossible Bird 5:45 - 6:30 p.m. Impossible Bird performed at Nirvana back in March. Guitarist and vocalist Nick Drummond is the former frontman and songwriter for the hit Seattle band The Senate. Tyler Carson is an internationally known fiddler/violinist most recently from Jack Maple. Together they have teamed up to create one formidable pairing. Their music comes at the listener from all angles and makes one feel things to the core.

The Spotlights All-Star Band 9 p.m. - midnight The Spotlights were founded by drummer Dan Cadman and have evolved into one of Vashon’s most exciting and entertaining bands. Playing classic rock, oldies, blues, Elvis, Beatles, Stones and everything in between, the band has been around for nearly 20 years. The backbone of the group consists of Cadman on drums, Matt Eggleston on bass and Loren Sinner on keyboards. The group has used a bullpen of guitar players, including Scotty Johnson, Jerry Todo, Pat Reardon and Steve Amsden.
OneNiteStand has some new stuff as well as a female duo who will redefine the local blues scene. This band is nothin’ but rockin’ blues. These musical veterans play their favorite blues tunes and spice ‘em up with their own originals. Fresh from playing in the local band Avaaza, Terri and Azula will leave you crying for more.
Poultry In Motion 4 to 5 p.m. Poultry In Motion has been scratching out tunes on Vashon for a few years now, playing some new and old country, Cajun tunes, rock ‘n’ roll and original music. Whether roosting at the coop, rocking the people late at night in the bars or jamming on a two-chord song for 20 minutes for a square dance, they enjoy the moment.
The Dadds 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. The Dadds were formed in the fall of 2005. They cover a broad range of material in a unique and clever fashion. They incorporate their greatest strengths and vulnerabilities while delivering context and a visceral experience for the listener. With more than 50 years of cumulative performance experience, they still marvel at the discovery available in each piece of music performed.

Many folks in the Northwest are familiar with Bill’s high-energy blues show, which he’s been performing in the region since 1986. Others in the band include guitarist John Gaborit, who has been playing in the Northwest since the mid-60s, and bassist Michael Stango, who has played with Herbie Hancock, Harvey Mandel and Kenny G. Tony Handy toured with Rose Royce from Los Angeles; many knew them from their number-one hit Car Wash.
Jessa Young, on keyboards and vocals, is launching her new project, Morphic Dream. This will feature a ground-breaking blend of acoustic-rock, electronica and classical orchestration.
Ignition Stage
Zarni de Wet 1 - 1:45 p.m. A native of South Africa, Zarni has been active in the music world since she was 12. Playing at bars and restaurants at the young age of 16 prepared Zarni for her now standing position as the only female dueling pianist in Seattle. Zarni has been showcased on several television series in upstate New York, Boston and Seattle and has toured around the world with her piano. She recently played at a sold out Showbox opening for the Presidents of the United States of America with the band she is part of, Campfire OK. Zarni combines the pop sensibilities with unique elements that make for a truly fresh sound that John Mayer praised, saying “I just want to hear [it] again.”
James Coates 3 - 3:45 p.m. Influenced by 1960s pop icons like the Beatles and the Beach Boys as well as folk/rock revolutionaries like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, James Coates has crafted a nine-song love letter to the music that inspired him. From the 12-string jangle of “Man of Faith” to the orchestral strings of “A Real Rock and Roller,” his album is a diverse work of passion that sounds both modern and classic. James will be performing some of these songs at this year’s festival on the Ignition Stage.
Bob Krinsky 4 - 4:45 p.m. Bob Krinsky has a lifetime passion for songwriting under his belt. He has performed his songs in coffee houses, clubs and on festival stages from New York, New Jersey and the Catskill Mountains to the Oregon Country Fair, Seattle Folk Life Festival, Seattle Freemont Fair, Vashon Island Earthfair and various other places. Anybody that knows Bob knows that he has two true passions in his life: his family first and foremost, with his music not far behind.
Ron Hook 5 - 5:45 p.m. Mysterious, captivating and ever so talented, this man will lay down his funky grooves and make you forget about your troubles. Frontman for the legendary island band Subconscious Population, Ron has earned the respect of many people — not only with his ability to play many different instruments, but for his love of life, his artistry and his wisdom.

2013 Vashon-Maury Island Strawberry Festival
Based out of Anchorage and Phoenix Janie Lidey is an Emmy award-winning singer-songwriter. From her tribute to Rachel’s Challenge and the Columbine shootings “There will be Peace” to her Emmy award-winning “Change of Heart,” Janie knows the power of a song. She recently was in Nashville recording her anthem “Survivor,” which she has performed at a myriad of cancer events. While in Nashville, she performed with John Carter Cash & Friends at a tribute for Willie Nelson’s 80th birthday.
Islander Bob Krinsky is a passionate musician and songwriter.
SUNDAY Ober Park Stage
Tuesday Nights 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Tuesday Nights is an all-Island group of friends who play an eclectic repertoire of mostly old-time music. Most have played with different bands over the years, performing in widely varying places, including marching bands, the Blue Heron and the Strawberry Festival back in the 1980s.
RJ Knapp & Honey Robin Band 1 - 1:45 p.m. Chicago-born RJ Knapp is a 30-year veteran of the Seattle music scene and has played music ranging from classic rock to funk and blues, from California to Canada. By his side is the smooth and sultry voice of Robin “Honey Robin” Mahaffey, who is setting the Seattle blues scene ablaze. Classically trained bassist Robert Baker spreads his licks over the bottom of every song. Roger Lehet joins them on drums.
Rooster 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. Rooster was born from the recording aspirations of Poultry in Motion’s Chris Anderson. This group of seasoned vets packs a wallop and is sure to be

MUSIC Daryl & Renee Redeker 1:50 - 2:25 p.m. Daryl is a musician of exceptional talent who has been writing and recording since the early 1970s. He has released eight albums which received extensive airplay in the Northwest and has opened for such well-known acts as Jose Feliciano, Phoebe Snow, Kenny Rankin and John Denver. Daryl’s sister Renee has performed professionally in the Northwest since 1973. Her vocals are clear and athletic, using flavors of jazz, rock, blues and folk.
Pepper Proud 3:20 - 3:55 p.m.
Pepper Proud, originally from West Virginia, now sings and plays guitar in the Seattle area. high in the musical pecking order in the very near future. Joining Chris are Rick Doussett, Bob Kueker, Ken Widmeyer and Dan Bruce. This group pulls from 1970’s and 80’s popular music.
Certain Inertia 4 - 4:45 p.m.
Pepper Proud was raised surrounded by a thriving arts community in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Humbled by the mountains and somber skies of Seattle, she now spends most of her time writing new songs, singing loudly to the people at the markets and serenading the local bars, cafes and pubs.
Walter and Donny 4:50 - 5:25 p.m. Walter and Donny is a band from Vashon that plays Cosmic Americana music, a mix of Americana pop songs blending in an alt-country feel and elements of space-rock.
Pandora’s Box Stage
bobrick 11:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Bob Kueker and Rick Doussett — two veteran songwriters and well-seasoned musicians with a sound all their own — make up bobrick. Acoustic guitars, ukulele, electric bass, heartfelt vocals and soaring harmonies combine in their songs, a mix of originals and distinctive versions of new and old material.
Julie Mainstone & Meredith Connie 12:30 - 1:15 p.m. Julie Mainstone is an expressive, versatile singer who has performed for years in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. A widely respected recording artist, Julie specializes in the research and performance of traditional music from Nova Scotia and Ireland; her second album is due this summer. Performing with Julie is guitarist Meredith Connie.
Rebekah & The Lawsons 1:30 - 2:15 p.m. Rebekah & The Lawsons is Rebekah Kuzma, Larry Lawson and Lawson Cannon. They play traditional, cover and original tunes on acoustic string and woodwind instruments. Intricate three-part instrumental and vocal harmonies merge the talents of these seasoned performing musicians.
Certain Inertia’s feel-good Americana rock is a mixture of acoustic techniques and classic rock-inspired lead guitar and vocals. Certain Inertia was founded by songwriter and acoustic guitarist Peter MacMillan and lead guitarist Brien Howard. Brian Reece joins them on bass guitar and Brendan Hardy plays drums.

Maury Island Stage at Ober Park
Hominy 12:20 - 12:55 p.m. Hominy are two musicians embracing acoustic roots and modern sensibilities. They play original songs starting with familiar blues and soul ingredients. Pat Reardon plays left-handed guitar and sings. Andre Sapp adds mandolin, guitar and electronics from the garage.
Loose Change will play for the second time, as the closing act of the festival at the Ober Park Stage.

Longtime friends and collaborators, Golden Tree Story has an intuitive approach when playing, one that has developed through years of improvising, listening and performing. Their unique sound comes from rich backgrounds in classical, jazz, rock, folk, funk and Latin music, as well as how they arrange and improvise within their repertoire. They will be a duo at Strawberry Festival this year — Cynthia Marie and Rachel Erin Sage.
Judd’s multiple endeavors in different styles have contributed to his diverse use of the fretboard. Judd is a graduate of Cornish College of the Arts with a bachelor of music, but he doesn’t hit you over the head with technique. He remains accessible, while treating the close listener to colors they may not expect.

Spank Williams

3:45 - 4:30 p.m. Spank Williams is a ukulele-washboard band with a special brand of country western music. Rested from their Telegram Tour, they are ready to take on 2013 with even more tightly-harmonized murder ballads and venerated hits from their fathers’ record collections. They add visual appeal with their act, which includes art shows that they produce. Whether it’s on stage, in a gallery or on a picnic bench, Spank Williams never fails to entertain.
The Summer Januaries 4:45 - 5:30 p.m. The Summer Januaries are a musical duo comprised of guitarist/vocalist Sean Michael Robinson, and fiddler/vocalist Rachel Erin Sage. They formed in the summer of 2011 as a busking duo, playing traditional American and Irish fiddle tunes at Seattle’s Pike Place Market. They began injecting these fiddle tunes into densely harmonized arrangements of their favorite songs, and these inventive arrangements soon defined their sound. They have continued writing original music and have been performing at festivals, farmers markets, weddings and street corners throughout the Pacific Northwest and Europe, where they have been touring since last September.

The Paula Boggs Band 1 - 1:45 p.m. Paula Boggs’ unique voice, sharp and witty writing and knack for producing slick melodies and jazzy-bluesy rock music is enlightening. Her music is folksy at times, pop-like at others and balanced out by some charming mid-tempo tunes. She plays acoustic guitar, and her authentic voice makes all of her work sound genuine, modern and reflective.

The Summer Januaries play a mix of Irish, American and original tunes. tradition and the time-honored crafts of musicianship and songwriting. From sweet and sorrowful ballads to moving country shuffles and many notable stops in between, the Fans’ sound has been compared to Gillian Welch, the Avett Brothers and Whiskeytown.
The Flying Mandolini Brothers 3:30 - 4:15 p.m. The Flying Mandolini Brothers is Matt Straight, Paul Colwell, Steve Amsden, Dave Lang, Lawson Cannon and Wally Bell. They form an all-male mandolin and vocal sextet which features extended vocal harmonies and expanded instrumental ensemble work by five different members of the mandolin family.
Jamie Jackson is a passionate singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist now living on Vashon. Over the years she has performed in a variety of bands playing guitar, bass, keys and drums along with singing lead and backing vocals. Jamie is known for her smokin’ guitar licks and one-of-a-kind soulful voice. Jamie is currently working on her debut album entitled “A New Beginning,” a blend of acoustic rock, folk and blues.
Gregg Curry 3 - 3:45 p.m. Singer-songwriter Greg Curry brings the energy of a trio to his solo performances as he performs his powerful original songs and a selection of covers that says much about his musical roots. His music can best be described as Americana — a mix of rock, country, blues, folk, bluegrass and gospel.
