Thirteen-year-old Mercer Island native Larissa Bitners is not your typical teenager. Recently selected as one of the 90 finalists in the global Google Science Fair competition, the singularly gifted Bitners is already trailblazing new paths in the world of science. Google’s online science competition invites young people from around the world to “be curious, ask questions, and perform sci-
ence experiments to answer those questions.” Last year’s winner from the 13-14 age group worked to help individuals with hearing loss enjoy a superior music experience by employing multi-frequency tactile sound. Bitners’ project involved experimenting whether a parabolic reflector could expand the range of a wireless network signal, and increase its security by directing radio waves to a particular area while blocking signals from neighboring properties. And if that sounds complicated, you’re certainly not alone. Dubbed ‘the fix-it girl’ by her mother, Melinda, Bitners has had a knack for technology and science her entire life. “She was one of those babies who took apart the remote control,” Melinda recalls. At age 7,
Bitners dismantled and reassembled a transistor radio, and would later express puzzlement when discovering that her father didn’t know how to put window wipers on the family car, to her a seemingly uncomplicated task. Tonya van Orden, her science teacher at Islander Middle School, asked her class to create projects in response to the same questions that the Google Science Fair had requested that contestants explore. However, the students weren’t required to submit their projects for actual competition. Completed in merely a week and tested with the help of her dad, Bitners didn’t register that her project was something out of the ordinary, until van Orden approached Melinda Bitners with the suggestion that her daughter enter the project in the international competition. “It was original,” van Orden recalls. After three years of giving out the assignment, van Orden had seen many students devise
State Representative Marcie Maxwell announced last week her resignation from elected office to accept a new position in statewide service. Later this month, Maxwell will join Gov. Jay Inslee’s Legislative Affairs and Policy Office as the Senior Education Policy Advisor. She brings a strong background in education policy and funding plus business experience to this new leadership role focusing on K-12, early learning and higher education policy in Washington state. Maxwell is known for her work in STEM education, arts education,

She served all of the King County School
Boards as their Legislative representative to the Washington State School Directors Association. In the Legislature, Maxwell was on the House Education Committee, Appropriations Committee, Education Appropriations Subcommittee, Rules Committee, and the Technology & Economic Development Committee. She cochaired the Quality Education Council (QEC) and was on the Joint Legislative Task Force on Education Funding. Maxwell served in House leadership as the Deputy Majority Leader for Education and Opportunity. Of this last session, Maxwell and others had worked for more dollars for education. Was she disappointed by the outcome for school funding? “My focus and that of others was to make sure there is a pathway for a 21st century education for all our kids,” she said. “But,” she added, “there

She said that public outreach will be an important part of her new role. “It will be part of my job to vet ideas from other sources,” she said. “I will be out listening.” Maxwell is also a realtor and small business owner. She’s been active with Rotary, chambers and various foundations. Maxwell has earned recognition from numerous organizations, including the Washington School Administrators Community Leadership Award, Association of Washington School Principals Torch of Leadership Award, Washington State PTA Friend of Children Award, Washington Education Association Friend of Education Award, Washington School Counselors Association and others. She said won’t forget or ignore her former constituents. “I want to tell people in the 41st District and Mercer Island that they will still see me. I will still be working for them,” she said.
Ginn is 2013 recipient of Flash Family Inspirational award By Reporter Staff
Mercer Island Youth and Family Services announced Friday that it has chosen Rand Ginn as the 2013 recipient of The Flash Family Inspirational Award. Phil Flash was a longtime Mercer Island resident and artist. He and his family established this award in 2008 to “honor a Mercer Island senior adult who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership and who possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others.” Rand Ginn is receiving the award for the exemplary service and positive attitude that he brings to the Mercer Island community. Throughout his 35 years as an Island resident, Ginn has worked on campaigns, levies, the Historical Society, the School Board and a host of other community boards. Ginn has a quiet, gentle, reliable, ‘can do,’ professional and straightforward demeanor that enhances his effectiveness with groups and organizations. Island treasure seeks new owner Stately, surprising 103-year-old house on West Mercer Way is for sale By Mary L. Grady

An unique and stately piece of Island history is up for sale on West Mercer Way. The 6,000-square-foot wood and stucco home, offered for $2.1 million, is possibly the oldest home built on the Island and certainly the oldest grand home. While there are many cottages and cabins built around 1900, few if any remain that have not been extensively changed. But even without such a designation, the East Seattle mansion’s design and look is unlike any other Mercer Island home. It is older than Seattle’s Smith Tower, and while it was being constructed, the inventor Thomas Edison came to visit Seattle. It was built even before the Island was officially named Mercer Island. The small settlement on the Island’s western shore was then called East Seattle. Built in 1910, just two years after the Calkins Hotel burned down, the house at 2740 West Mercer Way, was built by James Carr for businessman DB McMahon, a milliner who sold his hats in Seattle. The home was purposely built just 100 yards up the road from Calkins Landing for easy access to the ferry landing. The McMahons took the ferry from Seattle across the lake on weekends and wanted to walk home from the dock. It was situated to take advantage
of the expansive lake views. The shoreline in those days, according to locals, was higher and the view less obstructed than it is today. At the northeast corner of the 33,000-square-foot lot was a tall wooden tower constructed in 1889. It was situated over two springs, several yards south of the house, and served as the early source of water for the East Seattle community. A nearby water supply was essential for the use of a poured concrete pool constructed in the basement of the big house. The small retangular pool — unused now — was a place for relaxing or perhaps lessons for the children who attended the East Seattle School established before the turn of the century, or the Emmanuel Episcopal Church built in 1914, both just across the road. As such, by the 1920s, the home was at the very center of Island life. The Guild Hall at the church served as the defacto community center for Islanders of all faiths. Yet, as the decades passed, the home has seen its share of change. The school and

Below, the familiar view of the home from West Mercer Way. the church relocated. The center of Island life moved elsewhere. Yet, due to its uniqueness and size, the house has had many lives. It has seen use as a vicarage, French preschool, even a beauty salon. In 1965, the Parker family purchased the property and raised their family there before moving to Portland,
Ore. Unable to actually part with the house, Mrs. Parker insisted on keeping it. It was rented out for several years. The nearby water tower burned to the ground in 1975. The East Seattle School sat empty for a time. The home fell into disrepair. But it retained its imperious exterior, and sur-
rounded by a huge expanse of green lawn, it became a landmark. It was known by many as the ‘Castle,’ including its current owner, Guy Seaton, who grew up on the Island and graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1975. Some 20 years later, Seaton and his wife Betsy, and their baby girl, came
through the broad oak door encased in its original leaded glass windows to look at the house, then for sale. They found worn carpet covering the polished pine floors and the house apparently divided into individual living spaces in the manner of a boarding house. “We found that each door

True Value Hardware to reopen at new location next month

In less than three weeks, True Value will be moving to its new location in the Mercer Island Shopping Center on S.E. 27th Street. The hardware store, owned by De Calvert, has occupied the space below the Islander Pub for 27 years. With the coming construction of the Legacy mixed-use building on their site, True Value had no leeway — it was either move or go out of business. Their lease was up July 1. “We’re doing as best
as we possibly can under these circumstances,” said Calvert. The future location, formerly the Overlake Clinic, is next to a dry cleaners and Walgreens, and is a smaller space of 5,700 square feet. It has had to be thoroughly gutted. After the new store is completed, True Value will lose 1,000 square feet of the size of the original store and its outdoor patio space to display lawn mowers, garden tools and mulch. As a result, the rentals department will be considerably downsized. Calvert signed the lease with the MI Shopping

Center, LLC, in March. Perimeter walls are being taken down at the current location as preparations for the move are well underway. The hardware store has 15,000 items in stock. Willow, Calvert’s Australian shepherd, can still be seen in the aisles of the store, where she has been greeting customers for 15 1/2 years. With the wrecking ball expected on Aug. 1, True Value must be out of the 76th Avenue building by July 31. “We hope the Island will continue to support us as they have in the past,” Calvert said. Legacy Mercer Island is a five-story residential and commercial project that will include 209 apartments and a number of affordable units, 258 parking spaces, a public plaza and commercial and retail space. Plans for Thrift Shop expansion move ahead By Reporter Staff
At a planning session held Monday night, the City Council saw the next version of a design of a remodel for the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Thrift store. The idea is to expand and enhance the highly successful thrift store in order to eventually fully fund the city’s Youth and Family Services department with the proceeds. YFS is still partially funded through the city’s General Fund. The store brings in more than $1 million each year. At a June planning session, the Council reviewed a pre-design for a remodel and expansion of the shop, housed in a building that used to be a neighborhood pool. At that time, Councilmembers suggested a variety of chang-
es to the initial design. Councilmembers generally agreed that while the purpose and design were good, it needed to be scaled back to keep costs low and to minimize impact on Mercerdale Park and the children’s play area there. Changes were made to the design presented on Monday evening, after Reporter deadline, to reduce costs, limit the size of the addition, and change the configuration of the approach to a new donation drop-off area. Issues concerning parking were also part of the discussion about the impact of an enlarged store. City planners added more parking spots in this version of the design. $1.56 million. • The proposed addition has been scaled back to 2,000 square feet from an original 2,500 square feet. • The proposed donation drop-off on 78th Avenue S.E. has been revised and shortened. • The existing parking area would be expanded to provide room for 69 vehicles. This is 35 stalls more than the existing parking lot. The project would be financed by borrowing about $1 million. Another $550,000 would come from available cash from the city. Some of the money to expand the parking lot could come from the ‘Beautification Fund,’ said Finance Director Chip Corder, who said that expanded parking will benefit park users. The city also plans to reach out to the Mercerdale neighborhood about the expansion plans. If all goes according to plan, construction could start next summer.

t was a perfect weekend, or we should say, a magical weekend for a party. A big party. A party that spilled from the basketball courts at the newly named Aubrey Davis Park to art in the Wells Fargo parking lot to Luther Burbank Park for fireworks. The city had everything tidy and trim for the big weekend. Staff and dozens of volunteers came together to organize and manage the biggest day on the Island calendar. Volunteers and vendors were ready, offering everything from snow cones to fine art. But the Grand Parade is the centerpiece of the weekend. People bring chairs and gather early along 78th Avenue S.E. Small children spill into the street to get the best view. In it, we see everyone from strangely dressed adults representing the Island’s Community Fund to wriggling wiener dogs to local celebrities waving from fine cars. There are Girl Scouts and drill teams, cheerleaders and tiny children on tiny John Deere tractors. There is the 60-plus member Mercer Island Community Band with celebrated percussionist Bert Pound on the cymbals. There are Hometown Heroes and politicians, Boy and Girl Scouts, karate kids and more. After the parade, the crowds stream into Mercerdale Park to pay respects to our veterans, then on to the street fair. Along 77th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 32nd Street, fairgoers nibbled and crunched, and waited willingly in line for something cool to drink. It is rare that Islanders can emerge out of the gray for no other reason than to have a good time. As they perused the offerings on the street, neighbors commiserated about this and that or what absolutely needed to be done here and there. There was both serious talk and lots of laughter. Those with differences could converse and be civil, surrounded by the evidence of everything that is good about living in a small town. It did not matter that tolling looms or that the price of gasoline is still over $4 a gallon. We were all there — staying home, enjoying ourselves and our community, its parks and our neighbors and friends. Everything we needed was right here.
I would not like to be the “Grinch who stole the Fireworks, or the Fourth of July,” however... The legal time for fireworks to be used on Mercer Island is from 11 a.m.11 p.m. on July 4 only. Until Sunday, July 7, I was still aware of the odd fireworks being discharged on the Island. I am aware that the MI Kiwanis do sell fireworks on MI to raise funding for other programs. I know that the lack of this revenue would hurt the programs that they support. Possibly, an alternative plan could be developed that would generate a similar or better revenue for them. Due to extreme dry temperatures in our yard, on our deck and on our across most of the state, I propose a roof. I am thankful that fires were not total ban of fireworks across the entire caused in our area. ‘Patriot Plaza’ not the right name for VFW plan I read the announcement in the Reporter about plans to create a ‘Patriot Plaza’ at the VFW Hall. I think it is a wonderful idea to have a memorial to veterans, but a terrible idea to call it ‘Patriot Plaza.’ I have belonged to the Southern Poverty Law Center for many years. They track ‘hate’ groups and bring offenders to justice. Many ‘hate’ groups and anti-government groups use the word patriot in their names. So the word has become offensive. Robert Gerald Lewis
Robert Gerald Lewis was born December 21, 1926, and passed away peacefully on July 12, 2013. He is survived by Andriene (Andi), his loving wife of 64 years, daughters Kyle Robson (Fred), Shaun George (Bill), Kym Shepherd (Mark), Andriene Sterlington (Phil), nine grandchildren, Whitney (Jared), Dave, Nikki, Jessie (Fernando), Madeline, Benjamin (Sarah), Aaron, Gunnar, Hanna, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Gerald Lewis, Jr. Bob was an alumni of Stadium High School in Tacoma (1945 AllState Basketball) and University of Puget Sound. After serving in the Army during World War II, he spent his professional life in sales. He was an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, an avid golfer, a lifelong sports fan, and was adored for his keen intellect, sense of humor and loving devotion to family and friends. Services will be held Friday, July 19, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Mercer Island. 832481

Police Sunday | JUN 30 DUI: A 27-year-old Mercer Island woman was taken into custody at 5 a.m. for driving under the influence and with a suspended license in the 3000 block of 78th Ave. SE. She had previously tried to solicit sex from a 23-year-old man at a gas station and was reported appearing intoxicated. Jack G. Cahoon of Mercer Island, WA, passed away at home on July 11, 2013 after celebrating his 65th wedding anniversary and 89th birthday with family. He was born to George E. Cahoon and Opal Brown Cahoon on July 7, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA and as a young child moved to Yakima, WA. He graduated from Yakima High School where he participated in football and track and entered the University of Washington and pledged Sigma Nu Fraternity. During WWII, Jack joined the NROTC at the U. of W. with 24 other Engineering students. He was then deployed to the new aircraft carrier U.S.S. Tarawa where he served as a navigational officer. After the war, he returned to Yakima for the summer where he met Suzanne Raymond who was home from college. They both returned to school in the fall and because Jack’s father was ill, he changed majors and graduated from the U. of W. business school in order to continue his father’s grocery business. Jack and Suzanne were married on June 27, 1948 and together raised their three children, Scott (Barb Tash), Sandra (Gary Simon) and Kevin (Maria Callaghan). Jack’s grocery business career continued with his two brothers opening multiple grocery stores in the Yakima Valley. Later, he had the opportunity to own two Prairie Market (wholesale cash and carry market) franchises in Yakima and Wenatchee. This venture led to his starting 35 Prairie Markets in central California. In 1975, he returned to Mercer Island and became the Vice President of Operations of Tradewell Stores, Inc. Later, he sold commercial real estate with Donahue and Associates. At that time, Jack “sort of retired” to enjoy his family activities with eight grandchildren which include Christopher (Melissa Clapper), Colin Simon (Sarah Lambdin), Aaron, Hillary (Tim Bovat), Alexandra Simon , Hanley, Angus, Leighton and two great granddaughters, London Simon and Charlie Grace Bovat along with golf, tennis, boating, fly fishing, poker club, rose gardening and following the “Huskies”. Jack and Suzanne loved to travel and enjoyed returning to the ancestral home of the Colquhoun (Cahoon) clan in Scotland. Jack belonged to Kiwanis in Yakima, Yakima Tennis Club, Modesto Tennis Club and Mercer Island Beach Club. He was an Eagle Scout and loved that his two grandsons Christopher and Aaron followed in his footsteps. Jack leaves behind his beloved wife Suzanne, brothers Gene (Helene), George (Paula), sister Gerry Fisher (Jim) and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island, 4400 86th Ave, S.E. at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 20. Reception to follow. The total loss was $260. The wallet did not contain any credit cards. Someone entered a locked Toyota Camry at night in the 2400 block of 76th Avenue S.E. A garage door opener, vehicle registration and insurance card were stolen. The total loss was $50. Theft: A small-framed hybrid bicycle worth $850 was stolen from the North Mercer park-and-ride sometime after Sunday evening, June 28.

ACCIDENT: A hit-and-run occurred in the QFC parking lot in the 8400 block of S.E. 68th Street around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday. A 37-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that she had been backing out of her parking stall and was hit by a car behind her that had failed to stop. She subsequently followed the vehicle after the driver, a 68-year-old Mercer Island man, refused to exchange personal information with her. The victim’s husband called the police and the other driver was identified and contacted by police.

Shirley Ann Berge Shirley Ann Berge, a long time Mercer Island resident, passed away on June 6, 2013, in Overlake Hospital from pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. Shirley was born to Margaret and Rudolf Zuhlke, in Syracuse, NY on Oct 8, 1930. After a few years, her parents divorced, and her mother took Shirley west to visit her sister and brother-in-law in Bellingham. They eventually moved to Seattle, in order to improve her job prospects in the depths of the Depression. Shirley attended several grade schools, and then went to Broadway for two years until it closed. While there she pledged KN and enjoyed long lasting friendships with several of her classmates. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. She enrolled in the University of Washington, pledged Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, and continued classes until tuition funds ran out. She then worked at several local businesses, including The Seattle Times. In 1953, she was a bridesmaid for one of her sorority sisters, who had invited her cousin, Gudmund Berge, to be an usher at her wedding. Shirley and Gudmund met and the romance began. In 1955, she and Gudmund married and moved to Magnolia, where their first two children, Mark and Anne, were born. In 1961, they moved to Mercer Island’s west side, into a home designed and built by Gudmund, with Shirley selecting the interiors. Two more boys were born, Matthew and Rolfe, which made ours a full house. After growing up as an only child of a single parent, Shirley found herself with four active children enrolled in Mercer Island schools,a decided contrast to her upbringing. She helped schedule time and provisions for our growing family to enjoy doing things together. These include camping with a tent trailer, hiking, skiing, and taking trips to many of the natural wonders of the Northwest. Once the children were all in school, she returned to the UW to complete her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. Later, she attended Bellevue College and obtained an Interior Design degree. In her lifelong quest to gain knowledge and experience, she worked as an administrative assistant for a variety of businesses and professions. An additional opportunity she couldn’t resist was being an extra with dialog in a movie being filmed in Ballard starring Gene Hackman and Ellen Burstyn. Gudmund and she expanded their travels as their children
became more independent. She would research world destinations and handle the scheduling with their travel agent. They felt they should travel while their minds and bodies were capable of absorbing the culture and customs of different people and countries around the world. In their apartment, there is a world map that with red pins to highlight their extensive travels and serving as a reminder of the many wonderful memories experienced. Gudmund and Shirley spent 50 years enjoying their view of Lake Washington, the Olympic Mountains, and the Blue Angels overhead from their Mercer Island home. Their patio was originally used for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, and then later reconfigured to outdoor gatherings for family and friends with pergola, BBQ, water fountain, and plantings. Due to medical issues, Shirley and Gudmund decided to downsize to Aljoya, a retirement community on Mercer Island, in October 2011. It was her choice and she was right again. The day after their 58th wedding anniversary, she was taken to Overlake Hospital by the Mercer Island Fire Dept and eleven days later she left her loving family. Shirley will be forever remembered in her family’s and friend’s hearts for her strong devotion to her marriage and relationship with Gudmund, support and nurturing of the family, genuine caring nature for others, passion for travel, and playful sense of humor. Shirley is survived by her husband, Gudmund; son, Mark, (New Jersey); daughter, Anne McIntosh, (Issaquah), along with son-inlaw, Larry McIntosh, and grandsons, Jordan and Kyle McIntosh; son, Matt, (Frisco, Texas), along with daughter-in-law, Wendi Berge, grand daughter Brynna, and grandson, Hayden Berge; and son, Rolfe, (San Francisco, CA). In 2007, after learning about the University of Washington’s School of Medicine Willed Body Program, Shirley said she liked the concept of using her body after death for medical or surgical teaching and research. They attended a memorial service at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery and Funeral Home for previous donors, and both agreed to enroll in the program. Shirley is now a participant in this program for the advancement of medical science and education. The memorial service there will be held in September. I-90 tolling: City makes progress with full EIS and lawmaker support By Reporter Staff
The City of Mercer Island says it has made significant progress on the Interstate 90 tolling issues by pressing transportation officials to determine the need for and the impact of tolling I-90. Recently, the Washington State Department of Transportation has agreed to conduct a new public comment period during the EIS scoping process. The city worked toward legislation that was adopted in the recent session, which now requires WSDOT to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) instead of
the lesser Environmental Assessment that was originally planned. Following the adoption of that legislation, the city sent a letter to WSDOT, urging them to conduct a new round of public comment given the new EIS requirement and asking that they coordinate the EIS with any regional study to be conducted by the Puget Sound Regional Council. WSDOT has agreed with the city’s suggested direction in their response. WSDOT plans to announce a timeline for the new EIS scoping and public comment period later this summer. Congressman Dave
Reichert recently sent a letter to Anthony Foxx, the incoming secretary of the United States Department of Transportation, regarding I-90 tolling. In his letter, Reichert raises concerns about the potential impacts of tolling on commerce and the legality of tolling I-90. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are over four million motorcycles registered in the United States. Approximately 80 percent of reported motorcycle accidents result in injury or death (NHTSA). One of the main reasons for this is because a motorcycle provides virtually no protection during a crash. During the month of May, we wanted to give riders a few extra tips to help keep you safe on your chopper before you embark on the open road. Mercer Island seems to be a popular place where motorcycle riders enjoy coming to ride, so keep these tips in mind: • Take a motorcycle rider training class and get your motorcycle endorsement before you ride your motorcycle on the roadways. It’s important that you become familiar with your motorcycle in a controlled environment, get properly educated on motorcycle laws and rules of the road, and understand all of the safety requirements for riding your motorcycle on Washington’s roadways. (An estimated 33 percent of motorcycle operators killed in traffic crashes are not licensed or are improperly licensed to operate a motorcycle - NHTSA.) • Always do a safety inspection on your motorcycle before taking it out on the open road. Check your motorcycle’s oil, gas, other fluids, clutch cables, tire air pressure, head/tail lights, and brakes. • A good rule to follow —
never ride your motorcycle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs. • Always wear an approved motorcycle helmet while riding (look for the DOT label). • Wear proper clothing and eye protection while riding, as it may save you from serious injury if you are involved in an accident/ crash. • Do not carry a passenger under 5 years old. Also remember, riding a motorcycle with a passenger is much different than riding it alone. • Make sure that all of your motorcycle’s lights and lamps are lit while the motorcycle is in motion so that you are visible during

Vacation Bible School in full swing at Presbyterian church
Hooray for the Mercer Island Community Band I had a great time at Summer Celebration this year, and was fortunate to march with the Mercer Island Summer Celebration Parade Band. The 65 local musicians who volunteered to perform for the community in the parade band last weekend are a cool group of middle schoolers, high school and college kids, young adults, siblings, parents, a grandparent or two. Bert Pound, age 96, showed experience and style, marching with this year’s drumline. (He was the inspiration for this band three years ago.) This summer celebration band is a fun place for friends, alums and anyone else who enjoys making good music together — and then giving that gift to the community and raising everyone’s spirits! All players are welcomed to “Like” us on Facebook to receive a notice in 2014. This year’s parade band
is extremely grateful for the logistical support they received from Parker Bixby and MIHS (instruments), the doctors of Mercer Island Pediatrics (uniforms), Bert Pound, Mercer Island Presbyterian Church (rehearsal space), and the families of the players. Like many good endeavors, it cannot be done alone, and every individual plays an important part in the success and the sound of this group! Thanks to all the players and supporters! Dave Menz Mercer Islanders need to congratulate Dave Menz for the excellent job he did in once more getting a marching band together for the Summer Celebration Parade. Vacation Bible School was in full swing at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church last week with the theme, “Everywhere Fun Fair: Where God’s World Comes Together.” Kids from age 4 through fifth grade learned Bible stories and verses, completed a service project, made crafts and played games from Monday through Friday. With team names such as the Jelly Donuts, Corn Dogs and Cotton Candy, 65 total children were in attendance with dozens of volunteers helping out. There were 71 volunteers altogether, serving at different times. MIPC partnered with a homeless shelter for families, Julia’s Place, to bring five homeless children to VBS with full scholarships. The shelter, Julia’s Place, is located in the basement of Seattle’s Madrona Grace Presbyterian Church, whose pastor provided transportation for the chil-
dren from the shelter to VBS every morning. The church also supported the nonprofit Friends of the Children King County by providing 99 filled backpacks for low-income, at-risk children. The VBS kids packed the backpacks full of supplies — rulers, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, binders and more — for all grades, K-12. “The kids really got it — not all kids are lucky on Mercer Island and have school supplies,” said Kathy McDonald, the project coordinator. MIPC raised $3,000 at its community rummage sale in May and used that money to purchase the school supplies. Target also contributed to the fund. “We do VBS for a couple of purposes — to be an outreach, to meet our neighbors. To welcome children to discover that church is fun, that it’s for them, and that it is a place to learn that God’s love is for them and that they are all accepted. The

Mercer Island High School grads complete study abroad program in Beijing By Reporter Staff
Two Mercer Island High School graduates recently participated in and completed the IES Abroad Beijing program this spring. Alyssa Suhm, a 2011 MIHS grad, and Colin Strong, a 2010 MIHS grad, completed a semester in contemporary issues at Beijing Foreign Studies University. During the graduation ceremony, Suhm was recognized for most improved language ability in Mandarin
Chinese, while Strong was recognized for outstanding overall academic achievement. As part of the program, both studied Mandarin Chinese, but also took classes in modern Chinese literature, government and politics, international relations, environmental science and Tibetan studies. Suhm will return to Villanova University this fall, while Strong will return to Whitman.

Mercer Island’s annual summer extravaganza, Summer Celebration, went off without a hitch last weekend. Warm weather and sunny skies brought out the crowds, who enjoyed the traditional grand parade, street fair and evening fireworks show. This year’s theme was

Team Villa No Fun, made up of Mercer Island High School graduates from the class of 2012, won its category. The team went undefeated and won five straight games to win its division. The team includes: Michael Lewis, who attends the University of Washington; Kyle Reitinger, who goes to Villanova University; Jeremy Chow, who attends Gonzaga; and Michael Diamond, who also goes to UW. Another team of students, all of whom will be freshmen next year, won their division. The players have played together for the last five years, and this was their first championship. They won the title at Hoopfest in overtime. The group includes: Phinney Tasker, Jack Delay, Marcus Schiller and David Sims. All are students on Mercer Island except for Tasker, who lives in Issaquah and will attend Issaquah High School in the fall.

The team, which consists of 15 returning players and two new members, won games on Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, to earn a spot in the finals. In the championship game, the team faced The Rockets from Renton, which won the tournament with a 1-0 score. The Mercer Island team had seven players score 15 goals throughout the tournament.

The Seatons also found that there was little to speak of that represented a kitchen in the four-story house, constructed as a manor house to be run by servants. There had been a small cookhouse just outside of the main house. And for the servants, there were separate living quarters upstairs, and two staircases — one for the family and one for the servants. Using plenty of care and energy, and likely a good deal of money, the home has been returned to its former glory with polished hardwood and fir floors, original lead-paned glass windows, detailed mill work and built-ins. Several years ago, the Seattle Symphony asked to use the house for a fundraiser. The ceilings in several rooms, including the sun room, were stenciled with period designs. Those paintings remain. While the home’s original character is intact, updates have been necessary: bringing gas to the house, repairing the original masonry, adding a new 50-year tile roof, updating the plumbing and electrical systems. The team won the 2013 Washington State Youth Soccer Challenge Cup in May, earning an invitation to the regional tournament. Teams from 10 states, such as Colorado, Nevada, Idaho and Utah, played in the five-day competition. The team will now travel to Florida this month to play against the regional winners from the other three regions in the United States.
Mercer Island 9/10 Little League team wins District 9 title The Mercer Island 9/10 Little League all-star baseball team recently won the District 9 title. The team will move forward to compete in the state tournament, which begins July 13 in Oak Harbor. The team includes: Alex Arron, Nathan Buchan, Tyler Butson, Evan Dickstein, Caiden Fukano,
Wesley Ho, Michael Lee, Will MacCormack, Max Malakoff, Jack Mattox, Paul Noone, Rory Shanks and Tripp White. The team is managed by Peter Noone and coached by Mike Dickstein and Andy Shanks.
Spots still available at Mercer Island youth summer day camp The Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department still has some spots available in the popular youth summer day camp this year. The camp is for kids ages 6 to 11 and runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Each week features a special theme, with field trips and special guests. The last week of the camp will be held Aug. 12-16. The camp is $179 per week for residents, and $214 per week for non-residents. A three-day option is also available.
