Bouncing up to the scale with her prize clutched tightly between two tiny hands, Breanna Lewandowski’s ear-to-ear grin was absolutely infectious. The 8-year-old fisherman had just become the first to land a fish at the 33rd annual Kids Fishing Derby in Oak Harbor Saturday and it didn’t matter that her catch was barely three inches long. She was ecstatic. And dedicated. A slip and few sloshes later, the fish was weighed and Lewandowski was back at her post with a line in the water. She was going to catch many more, she said confidently, as this wasn’t her first time fishing. “I think I was 3 when I first started,” she said matter-of-factly.

A member of the department’s Explorer program stole a patrol car, a badge and a Taser and masqueraded as an officer on the Navy base in May, according to Oak Harbor Police Chief Ed Green. Josue A. Capellan, a 20-year-old Oak Harbor resident, allegedly told a detective that he wanted to know what it would feel like to pull someone over by himself. He denied actually doing so, but investigators are downloading video feed from the car to check what he did on the alleged joyride. Audobon society celebrates 30 years on Whidbey By JANIS REID Staff reporter

One of the oldest organizations on the island, the Whidbey Audobon Society turns 30 this year. What began as a fledgling group with 35 members ballooned into a formidable organization with 262 members of the local society, and 439 members of the National Audubon Society. While the group’s primary mission is to protect habitats and track Whidbey birds, it also aims to provide a place where people can simply enjoy the outdoors. Susan Prescott, the group’s publicity chairwoman, said she participates because it gives her “an appreciation for the natural world.” “It’s fun learning about all this cool stuff and it’s great to be part of an organization that cares about the quality of the environment.” In addition to the ninemonth “Birds of Whidbey” class offered each year, the group also organizes field trips, cleanups, and campouts to various parts of the island and other areas of Washington state. However, local bird lovers don’t need to go far to see a variety of birds. “There’s a significant

Bird-A-Thon — a fundraiser in which teams compete to identify the highest number of birds over a 24-hour period — 120 birds were spotted by the winning team. Whidbey Audubon also participates in “citizen science” programs created by

the national society, where members learn how to properly track and report the behavior of local bird colonies such as the Pigeon Guillemot, one of Whidbey’s signature birds. “Our chapter has been involved in the conservation of habitat, public outreach, education,community partnerships and most recently citizen science,” said Whidbey Audubon Program Chair Robin Llewellyn. “Our classes, programs and field trips are well attended sometimes to overflowing.” Casey said she joined the Whidbey Audubon Society because of her love of natural science, but stayed for the people. “Hooked me into a very dedicated, educated and interesting group of people,” Casey said. The next Whidbey Audubon field trip is Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, a camping trip at Bassett Park in Washtucna. Membership is not required to attend. “We enjoy introducing wildlife, particularly birds, to new faces,” Llewellyn added. “This society is a good place for both new and long time birders to come and learn about the many birds that share our Whidbey Island home.” For more information, log on to the group’s website, www.whidbeyaudubon.org

Community impacts fireworks show By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

Kathy Reed’s nerves were a little frayed watching the Fourth of July fireworks in Oak Harbor last week. And not because of loud explosions. Reed, in her first year as the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce executive director, hired a different company to stage this year’s fireworks show, Western Display Fireworks, from Canby, Ore. It eased her mind to watch the large crowd at Windjammer Park and beyond appear to enjoy the show, which lasted about 45 minutes and drew loud cheers of approval. “They were fantastic,” Reed said. Reed said she was pleased with how the Fourth of July festivities went. The holiday celebration marked the sixthmonth anniversary to the day of when she started as executive director and began planning for the city’s biggest event. She said generous support from the business community and residents in Oak Harbor raised the $14,000 needed to fund the fireworks show. She pointed to significant contributions from Whidbey Coffee, Sherwin Williams and Toppins, which made fundraising efforts that much easier. Last year, donations didn’t cover the cost for the fireworks show. “Between the three of them, they accounted for about half of the fireworks cost,” Reed said. “They were really the unsung heroes. “Instead of having to raise

Reed came up with the idea of holding a pet parade down Pioneer Way, which was a hit among the Whidbey Island dog lovers. Fifty dogs and one rat were entered. An apple pie bake-off also was popular, leaving Reed to imagine the possibilities in 2014. “It was a huge hit,” she said. “I’d love to see a red, white

and blue bake-off next year.” That would involve pies using all sorts of different colorful fruit from strawberries and loganberries to blackberries and blueberries. Applebee’s was a primary sponsor of the bake-off. When the competition was over, pieces of pie were sold off for donations, raising $106 for the North Whidbey Help House food bank. Reed said she’d also like to consider a diaper dash for young children for 2014. The pet parade looks like a keeper. “From my standpoint, things couldn’t have gone any better,” Reed said.

State to inspect reflexology, massage shops Starting this month, massage and reflexology businesses will be inspected to identify unlicensed providers and other illegal practices. The state legislature amended the massage law in 2012 to mandate licenses for reflexology (foot and hand massage) practitioners and authorized unannounced inspections of all massage businesses. According to the new section in the law, investigators can inspect businesses “within reasonable limits and in a reasonable manner.” However, businesses can’t be shut down if violations are found. Possible violations could result in an investigation, which may lead to Washington Department of Health action and/or a referral to local authorities. Agency staff expects about 150 massage/ reflexology business inspections a year. Inspections should ensure businesses meet sanitation and hygiene standards and that employees are appropriately licensed. Reflexology was previously unregulated. Before the amendment to the massage law, investigators could only look into businesses after a complaint had been filed against the business or one of its employees. County hires Ala Spit consult By JUSTIN BURNETT Staff reporter

A consultant will begin work soon on a feasibility study that will examine the final phase of restoration at Ala Spit. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Monday a contract with Coastal Geological Services, a Bellingham-based firm that focuses on assessments, restoration, monitoring and coastal management. The contract, which is not to exceed $28,000, outlines tasks that evaluate options for removing segments of bulkhead, all or part of a rock groin and parking lot alternatives. While the agreement requires that the study be completed by Dec. 31, construction is funding-dependent and likely won’t begin

for some time, according to Jill Wood, environmental health director for Island County Public Health. “It will be years before work begins,” Wood said. “It will be hard to fast track until we have funding for it.” Ala Spit is a North Whidbey county park popular with nature walkers and salmon fisherman alike. Health officials have been working to restore the area back to its original condition for several years. A consultant was hired to perform a complex feasibility study that determined the spit was eroding unnaturally due to the addition of artificial rip-rap. Work to remove the hunks of concrete that littered the beach was completed in 2011. There have been instances since where sections of the

spit appeared to wash out, but Wood said the work has been highly effective. While high tides can temporarily make the spit inaccessible, it is beginning to widen as planned and become more stable, she said. This second study is being commissioned largely to determine what is needed next. A rock jetty and bulkhead were marked for removal but his will look at the issue more closely. It could result in a recommendation to move forward with all the work, only some portions or none of it, she said. “There could be a do-nothing approach here,” Wood said. “It’s going to depend on the (recommended) options.” Whatever is determined, Wood said the soonest the restoration work could be completed is 2014.

The PBY Catalina Memorial on Seaplane Base, “stretched a little thin” for volunteers, is seeking help with both group tours and office work. And despite assumptions, PBY Memorial Director William Stein said volunteers don’t need to have any particular skill set to volunteer, and the number of hours is flexible. “You can do one hour a week, you can come every day. We need a patchwork of volunteers, young and old,” Stein said. “A warm body and a warm heart is all that is required.” In particular, the memorial has been short on volunteers during children group tours of the PBY aircraft and in the museum itself. Tours for adults and children in the aircraft must be supervised by staff, and children need to be watched throughout the property, Stein said. So those with any type of customer service or child supervision skills are welcome to apply. “But it’s not just the kids or the large groups, it’s the everyday stuff we need help

with,” Stein said. Those with simply a love of history can apply to be a docent for memorial visitors, and anyone with any phone or computer skills are welcome. In addition to the general volunteer opportunities, Stein said anyone with curating or museum experience would obviously be very helpful. The PBY Memorial Foundation was established in 1998 and is dedicated to the preservation of Naval aviation history, the PBY Catalina, and the Seaplane Base. With the initial mission to preserve the PBY and all seaplanes once based at Whidbey Island, the foundation now tries to preserve all aircraft once based on the island from 1942 to the present. Stein said that while volunteering at the memorial can be a “good time,” it’s also a great resume builder and recommendation letters can be written for volunteers. Stein, a retired Air Force master sergeant, admits he’s never spent a day in the Navy. Comments sought on ferry fares increase The Washington State Transportation Commission is seeking public comments on a proposed fare increase for Washington State Ferries. The proposed fare increase would go into effect Oct. 1 and include a 2 percent increase on passenger fares and a 3 percent increase on vehicle fares. Then, starting May 1, 2014, the ferry system would tack on an additional 2 percent increase on passenger fares and a 2.5 percent increase on vehicle fares. The fare increases are necessary to meet revenue goals set by the state legislature. The Washington State Transportation Commission is tasked with setting the fares for the fare system. The pending fare proposal also includes

consolidating the Friday Harbor / Sidney B.C. fares into one round-trip fare; eliminating the motorcycle oversize surcharge; and implementing a reduced fare for vehicles less than 14 feet in length. The transportation commission is holding several monthly meetings to allow public comments. A meeting is scheduled in Coupeville from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10 at the Commissioners Hearing Room in the Courthouse Annex Building. Season is ripe for picking berries By NATHAN WHALEN Staff reporter

Warm, summer days on Whidbey mean berry patches are waiting to be picked clean of sweet succulent treats. Several U-pick berry patches scattered throughout the island are up and running and people are rushing to pick the ripest and freshest strawberries and raspberries on Whidbey Island. “We’ve had lots of nice sunshine and that’s what makes the strawberries nice and sweet,” said Dorothy Mueller, owner of Bell’s Farm located off West Beach Road between Oak Harbor and Coupeville. Bell’s Farm strawberries were ripe enough to pick about 10 days ago. Mueller said that, depending on the weather, people will be picking strawberries for about four weeks. The farm, also known for its honesty stand, isn’t the only place on Whidbey Island to go into a field to gather some farm-fresh berries. Mile Post 19 Farm, located at the edge of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve near Outlying Field, is just days away from opening its raspberry field to the public. Owner Jerry Jaderholm said the U-pick is the most fun part of his farm business. He is selling raspberries out of his store that he opened Wednesday. His staff, comprised of students at Coupeville High School, had combed the bushes to

Jaderholm said he wants the remaining raspberries to ripen a bit more before opening the U-pick fields to the public. “You want the berries to be easy to pick,” Jaderholm said. A different type of u-pick operation is thriving on Central Whidbey Island as well. Lavender Wind Farm, located on Darst Road about a block away from Bell’s

Farm, allows people to pick its sweet-scented lavender that is blooming this month. “People love being out in the lavender field,” Lavender Wind Farm owner Sarah Richards said. She said people can pick lavender until it’s harvested, which is usually complete by the end of August. In addition to the Central Whidbey U-pick, strawberries and raspberries are also available on North Whidbey Island. Dugualla Bay Farm, located off Highway 20 between Oak Harbor and Deception Pass

State Park, has berry fields that are open to the public. Strawberries were ripe in mid-June and raspberries should be ready next week, said Dugualla Bay Farm Manager Shari Meagher. People can also purchase loganberries, marionberries and tayberries from the farm’s shop. The U-pick fields are scattered throughout Whidbey Island and provide a family with a reasonable way to have an adventure and a healthy snack at the same time.

explorer CONTINUED FROM A1 Green described the allegations as very unusual and stressed that the young man’s actions should not reflect on the program. “This absolutely is not a representation of what these kids are like,” he said, describing them as young men and women of integrity and commitment. The purpose of the Explorer program, Green explained, is to educate young people who are interested in careers in public safety. The Oak Harbor police program is for people in their late teen years to 21 years old. The Explorers don’t have any law enforcement powers, but often help with things like special events. Green said Capellan was the longest-tenured member of the Explorer program and appeared to be doing a good job up until the alleged incident. Green said investigators have since discovered that Capellan received a couple of traffic tickets while he was an Explorer and failed to tell the department, as required. Capellan’s Facebook page features a photo of an Oak Harbor police car and guns. Green said the allegations, if true, will likely spell the end to the young man’s aspirations to become an officer. “That’s the really heartbreaking part,” he said. The investigation started last week after an officer received a tip that Capellan drove a fully-marked patrol car on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and identified himself as a police officer to several military police offi-

cers on or around May 10. Capellan was dressed in full uniform with a stolen Taser and badge; he was allegedly armed with a handgun but claimed it wasn’t loaded at the time, according to the report by Detective Carl Seim. Capellan allegedly admitted taking the “key fob” for the department’s Dodge Charger from an officer’s desk and then driving it around the Navy’s Ault Field Base, Rocky Point and the Seaplane Base. He said he activated the lights and sirens while on the base, the report states. Capellan said he took a badge from a uniform hanging outside a locker and the Taser from a “radio closet,” Seim wrote. The items were later found in a roommate’s room. Detectives also found a couple of police uniforms, two bullet-proof vests and a canister of pepper spray in Capellan’s room. A police radio, police officer business cards and a loaded handgun were discovered in Capellan’s car, the report indicates. Green said the Taser is being tested to figure out if Capellan may have discharged it. In the meantime, Green said officers will start taking extra steps to ensure everything is locked up securely while he examines procedures related to the building and equipment. The department conducted a complete audit of inventory and nothing else appears to be missing, Green said.

Be wise to audience in sharing humor publisher’s column

I’m not politically correct. Hopefully that admission won’t land me in the kind of hot water that’s currently boiling TV cooking show host Paula Deen. Her career is falling faster than a bad butter soufflé. That said, I was raised not to use the “N” word. Had that word spilled out of my mouth, my “politically correct” mother would have — as she was apt to threaten — slap me right into next week. And justifiably so. I believe I have enough Native American blood running through my veins that I can publicly say I don’t buy into the kind of political correctness that recently led the Port Townsend School Board to drop the “Redskins” as their mascot. Others may be offended by that mascot, I get that. I am not. I’m not so uptight that I don’t enjoy a politically-incorrect joke on occasion. I’m a horrible joke teller myself. After countless awkward attempts at joke telling, I don’t even try anymore. Schools in particular, I believe, tend to be over politically correct. Society as a whole has led to these microcosms where our children are held to a rigid set of rules and standards that sometimes seem to defy common sense. Fighting back, for example, is NOT allowed. Several years ago, I went to my son’s middle school and argued with the vice principal. Earlier in the day, my son was walking down the hall of the school talking to a friend when another kid, one he didn’t know, came up behind them and smashed their heads together. It was a pretty solid “thud.” My son’s immediate response was to turn and hit the other kid. The vice principal explained to me that my son was wrong to fight back. Instead of defending himself, he should have gone to a teacher and reported the assault on him and his friend. Uh huh! My son was suspended from school for two days. The instigator was suspended for a week. The one lesson my son learned that day was that life is sometimes unfair. I’ve learned some lessons during my lifetime as well. First, while I don’t drink from the well of pure political correctness, there is a line it is wise not to cross. Second, to be aware of my audience, because irreverent humor doesn’t resonate with everyone.

Johnson’s chastisement of Emerson is ‘specious’ Editor, Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson’s chastising of fellow Commissioner Kelly Emerson about the June 27 Law and Justice Council forum, Johnson complaining that she “couldn’t even attend her own district’s meeting” is specious. The Heller Road Fire Station at which that forum was held is in Commissioner Kelly Emerson’s district. I attended. The law and justice levy lid request is for $2.6 million annually, for five years, starting in 2014, after which it would “sunset” unless the voters opted for renewal. Sheriff Mark Brown had 43 deputies when elected in 2007. He now has 33, and he wants to hire an additional 19, for a grand total of 52. He says it would take him at least until 2017 to do so, probably longer.

Prosecutor Banks would receive only about $275,000 of the $2.6 million. Commissioner Emerson acquiesced that the probability of Island County being able to “sunset” the levy lift when it is due to expire (and keep all those new deputies) is very low. My conclusion: any so-called “sunset” clause in the ballot resolution is wholly contrived: just like Commissioner Jill Johnson’s claim. Thank you, Sheriff Brown, Prosecutor Banks and Commissioner Emerson for your time. The purpose of this meeting was to take public input, not to discuss issues among the commissioners themselves. If Commissioner Jill Johnson is truly concerned about the appearance of forming unauthorized two-commissioner quorums, perhaps she and Commissioner Price-Johnson should issue special meeting notices for whenever they commute together to the Officer’s Club on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Fireworks law needs to be changed for next year Editor, Hopefully everyone had a safe holiday. For those who have a hard time tolerating the noise and pollution of the firecrackers every July 4th, now is the time for us to get together and get the laws changed to limit the fireworks on Whidbey Island. The commissioners have the power to limit them to the one-day holiday and to limit the hours to 11 p.m. — like they are in Coupeville and other counties. Next year July 4th is on Friday, so it will be much louder, higher and hotter with the new fireworks available. They are more dangerous every year. If your pets, wildlife, your children, the elderly and soldiers with PTSD had a hard time this year it will be worse next year. Why should a one-day holiday be stressful for so many days? Military news a mixed bag for Washington’s economy By DON BRUNELL

Military installations and defense contractors are taking the brunt of the automatic budgets cuts mandated by sequestration. Why should we care? Washington has major bases and military supBrunell pliers such as Boeing. They contribute more than $13 billion to our economy, about 4 percent of total GDP. A July 2012 study by George Mason University projected that sequestration could cost our state 41,000 military-related jobs. The U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan will also have an impact. According to Defense News, sequestration will cut $15.8 billion from the Pentagon’s 2013 budget and another $37 billion in cuts to defense contractors, including The Boeing Company. While Boeing’s major focus in Washington state is commercial aircraft production, the company is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of military aircraft with $33 billion in sales and 59,000 employees worldwide.

That section of Boeing’s business is under pressure. The Navy has already announced an $18 million cut to its $1.3 billion program to buy 18 V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft from Boeing and Bell Helicopter. Even though this particular program is not located in our state, cuts to Boeing’s military contracts will compel the company to redouble its efforts to economize across the nation — including scrutinizing the operating and regulatory costs that color decisions on where to operate or expand both its commercial and military production lines. Fortunately, one of Boeing’s major military contracts in Washington escaped the sequestration budget ax so far. The company’s $35 billion contract to produce 179 KC-46A aerial refueling tankers in Everett over the next 14 years has not been affected. In late June, Boeing workers in Everett loaded the first wing span for the first U.S. Air Force KC-46A, putting the company on track to meet its first delivery in 2016. Unfortunately, Spokane’s Fairchild Air Force Base lost its bid to host the first 36 K-46A refueling tankers, a decision Gov. Inslee called, “extremely unfortunate.” However, U.S. Rep. Cathy Morris Rodgers, R-Spokane, is optimistic, noting that Spokane

is still in the running to host future KC-46A tankers. Reducing our military presence in the Middle East will directly impact jobs in Puget Sound. Joint Base Lewis-McChord will lose about 4,500 active-duty soldiers over the next few years, including deactivation of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division. On the plus side, Lewis-McChord will continue its role as the Army’s West Coast force projection base. Reductions in Washington’s military presence create a ripple effect throughout our state’s economy. According to the Tacoma News Tribune, an Army study released earlier in the year suggested a reduction of 8,000 soldiers from Lewis-McChord would cause more than 20,100 military family members to leave the Puget Sound area, prompting the loss of more than 10,000 military contract and private-sector jobs. One positive note, Pentagon officials have indicated that, as the U.S. withdraws from Iraq and Afghanistan, it may shift more of its resources to the West Coast as the focus shifts to the Asia-Pacific region. The state is also shifting its bureaucratic focus. Acting on a Gregoire administration

study recommendation, Gov. Inslee’s new budget creates the position of director of military affairs, a $300,000 allocation designed to help the governor’s office coordinate with state agencies and local communities on military issues. Unfortunately, coordination alone is not enough. For example, the governor’s comprehensive “Washington Aerospace Strategy” talks about the need to reduce federal regulatory burdens to ensure a competitive business environment. Hopefully, that includes addressing similar burdens at the state level. Keeping military bases and contractors really is no different than keeping other employers. It largely depends on costs to operate, the desire to keep them here, and setting regulations that are reasonable and achievable. n Don Brunell is president of the Association of Washington Business. Email or call your Island County Commissioners and convince them to write an ordinance to change the rules to limit the days to just the Fourth of July and only until 11 p.m. Midnight is just too late. They can make it effective by next year if they try to. Since we have very limited law enforcement and volunteer fire fighters, now is the time to do it. We can promote Whidbey as a safe, beautiful and tranquil place to visit for the holiday. This would be a perfect time for the commissioners to show they can look out for the interests of all

Well Whidbey News-Times, the line has been drawn in the sand. From the latest barrage of Letters To The Editor you have published

it seems that the closer to the fountain of knowledge, which would be Central Paradise, you are the more exposure you can gather. The last paragraph of the letter by Marianne Brabanski is a great lesson for all of us. She states that there is no recourse except civil disobedience. I would ask would not another recourse be not to move on an island who’s main employee is a Naval Air Station without considering the problems that will probably arise? It seems a waste of time to try to have a civil debate concerning the Navy. The folks in Central Paradise want peace and quiet and that is the

way it such be. So I propose the following alternative to the minority of folks in Central Paradise that want to see Outlying Field in Coupeville removed. I do not write this in a flippant manner but as a reasonable solution to the problem. I believe Island County should be divided into two counties — say North and South Whidbey counties. The dividing line is negotiable but for the sake of this letter lets say Madrona Way. Have North Whidbey infrastructure built with a hospital and government agencies to handle the new county. The folks on Camano Island can

decide by election either to join North Whidbey, South Whidbey, go it alone, or try to incorporate into Skagit County. It seems this is the only reasonable solution. The way it seems the knowledgeable individuals in Central Paradise want to confine the intrusive noise to the area that is paying the most for their enjoyment. So in all seriousness I say sever the tie, bite the bullet, remove the canker sore from the current fountain of knowledge and the matter can be laid to rest. Jim Pace Oak Harbor

A public school teacher for most of her life, Trudy shaped the minds and lives of thousands of young people, sharing her lifelong passion for literature, ideas and civic engagement with all those she met. Trudy was well known on Whidbey Island as an activist and democratic innovator: founder of the Whidbey Island Democratic Club, threeterm president and lifelong member of the League of Women Voters, member of the Whidbey Island AAUW, supporter of the Whidbey Camano Land Trust, advocate and leader of the Oak Harbor High School Debate Team, founder of the Save Our Kids Crusade anti-violence coalition, founder of numerous book clubs, and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington State

Democrats. Her tireless energy and devotion to good, representative gover nment lives on. Her whole life Trudy had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, a deep curiosity for the world and a passion for engaging with her community. Everyone she met was familiar with her warm, contagious smile. A dear friend, mentor, muse, and humanist, Trudy continuously inspired those around her to live fully. While she will be sorely missed, her incomaparable spirit lives on. May the angels she loved and cared for now watch over her. She was predeceased by her devoted and loving husband of 56 years, Captain John P. Sundberg, USN (ret). She is survived by her four children, Kris Sundberg (Nancy), Jan Whitsitt (Bob), Lana Sundberg and

NW softball team earns trip to state tournament The the North Whidbey 9/10 Little League softball team thumped Sedro-Woolley 17-7 Monday at Volunteer Park to claim the District 11 championship and a berth in the state tournament. The North Whidbey/ Coupeville Junior Baseball team (13/14) had a shot of earning its own state berth in a winner-to-state game with South Skagit Tuesday; results were not available at press time. The North Whidbey/ Coupeville Juniors came through the losers’ bracket to stop previously unbeaten South Skagit 14-8 Monday at Fort Nugent, setting up Tuesday’s district finale. In 11/12 district baseball play, Central Whidbey finished second and North Whidbey third.

9/10 Softball The North Whidbey softball team, which includes two Central Whidbey players, fell behind 5-0 in the first inning but came storming back to win the title game in four innings. Haley Abbott tossed the first two innings and Coupeville’s Chelsea

Prescott, who allowed only one hit, closed out the game. The pair combined to strike out nine. The state tournament is in La Center July 13-20. In the win over South Skagit, Abbott pitched five innings and went 2-for-4 at the plate. She received offensive help from Patti Miessner (3-for-3, four runs), Madison Grinaldo (2-for-4, three RBI) and Gillian Zylstra (1-for-1, four walks, four runs). Saturday, Prescott pitched a complete game three-hitter with nine strikeouts. She was backed offensively by Coupeville’s Mollie Bailey who ripped a double and scored a run and Loralei Snyder who went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.

Nor th Whidbey/ Coupeville started the tournament with a 16-8 win over Sedro-Woolley Friday and then lost 14-6 to South Skagit Saturday. Another win over Sedro-Woolley, 15-5 Sunday, lifted Whidbey into the title series with South Skagit. In the win over SedroWoolley Sunday, North Whidbey played flawless defense, according to coach Shawn Philp, and blanked the visitors over the first four innings. Steven Richard pitched the six-inning win and picked off a runner at first in the third inning that took “the wind out of Sedro Woolley’s sails,” Philp said. The inning also included an outstanding play by second baseman Chad Spradlin who tagged a runner between first and second and tossed to first to complete a double play.

Andrew Eaton hustled home on a passed ball to put North Whidbey up by 10 in the sixth inning and end the game on the mercy rule.

Legion team wins Skagit Tournament

Three excellent pitching performances highlighted the Oak Harbor Legion baseball team’s championship run through the Skagit Wood Bat Invitational Tournament in Mount Vernon July 5-7. Oak Harbor, behind a one-hitter by Teddy Peterschmidt, ripped Bellingham’s Post 7 10-1 Sunday in the championship game at the Skagit Valley Dream Field. Friday at the Dream Field, Oak Harbor stopped the Seattle Stars 8-3 and Tyler Snavely shutout Victoria 1-0. In the win over Victoria, Brent Mertins singled in the seventh and scored all the way from first on a hit-and-run base hit by Anthony Stewart for the game’s only run. Saturday at Sherman Anderson Field, Oak Harbor fell to the Washington Rush 5-1, and then earned a spot in the title game with a 3-1 win over Bellevue’s Phiten on Mertins’ no hitter. Central Whidbey defeated North Whidbey 6-3 Friday, July 5, to earn a spot in the championship game, which it lost 16-1 to Sedro-Woolley. The closest game SedroWoolley had in the tournament was a 12-3 win over Central Whidbey Thursday. In that game, Jake Pease slugged a home run for one of the few Central Whidbey highlights. JoJo Welling led the way in Central Whidbey’s win over North Whidbey, going 3-for-3 with a home run and double. Matt Hillborn was also 3-for-3 and ripped a double. Shane Losey added two singles. In Central Whidbey’s loss in the title game, Pease again supplied the only offensive highlight, smacking a double. Central Whidbey coach Bob Brown said his team made more errors in the championship game than in the other four games combined.

sports in brief 9/10 baseball team forming An all-star baseball team for Whidbey Island 9and 10-year-olds is being formed to play in several tournaments this summer. The team is not affiliated with Little League and there are no geographical boundaries on who is eligible. The fee of $150 covers three tournaments and uniforms. A movie made by two Oak Harbor High School graduates will premiere July 12 and 13 at the Historic Everett Theater. The film, IMAGINATION THIEF, is the first full-length film directed and produced by sisters Jeremy and Jemely Jayme, 2007 Oak Harbor graduates and video students. The drama/mystery film tells the story of Jack Charles, a young man who has attained fame as a concert pianist and also has the unique ability to duplicate a person’s talent. He later discovers the darker side of his abilities. The film is shot largely around Snohomish County with local actors. It is the first film produced by Dead Wringer Productions, the sisters’ production company. A new book from Oak Harbor author Brittany Geragotelis, “Life’s a Witch,” was released July 9. The second book in a series written by Oak Harbor’s BRITTANY GERAGOTELIS is out. “Life’s a Witch,” was released July 9, the birthday of her mother Diane Geragotelis. Brittany Geragotelis, a 1997 Oak Harbor High School graduate who lives in New York, signed a deal with Simon & Schuster in 2012 to produce a series of three paranormal action books. Her first book in the series, “What the Spell,” came out in January. She had self-published a version of “Life’s a Witch” on a writers website called Watt pad.com, and drew 18 mil-

Heartfelt companions Oak Harbor couple’s life journey includes 68 years of marriage By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter

Edsella Debler sat in a recliner, shook her head and smiled when her husband recalled what he was thinking the first time he laid eyes on her. “I knew I wanted that,” Lawrence Debler said, staring across the family room at his wife. “Oh boy,” Edsella muttered to herself. However, when pressed, she would concede the feeling was mutual. “I think I liked him pretty well, too.” The Deblers shared stories about how they met and how they’ve managed through nearly seven decades of marriage while they relaxed in their Oak Harbor home on Monday. On Sunday, July 7, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in a way that suited the couple just fine. They drove into town to have dinner at China City. “We had a nice dinner just the two of us together,” Edsella said. “We had cake here but we were too full to eat it.” Edsella, 83, and Lawrence, 86, live in their own home on about an acre of property near the border of Oak Harbor and Coupeville. “We have a Coupeville telephone number and an Oak Harbor address,” Edsella mused. They’ve been life companions ever

The Deblers’ home is decorated with dozens of images, including one from their first date in February of 1945 at a Sacramento, Calif., arcade. They were married five months later. since they first met at an arcade in their hometown of Sacramento, Calif., in February of 1945. Five months later, they were married in Edsella’s mother’s living room. Edsella was 15, Lawrence 18. They met by chance. A friend of Lawrence’s needed a ride to see his girlfriend after his car broke down. Lawrence gave him a ride to the arcade only to find that the girl had a pretty companion with her. One he couldn’t keep his eyes off of. Sixty-eight years later, he’s still staring. “Does my wife look like she’s 83?” he said. “We’ve had a pretty good life together.” A life that included the joy of having four sons and the sadness of out-

living two of them. Cancer claimed one son, a heart condition led to the passing of another. “You’re not supposed to outlive your children,” Edsella said. Yet, all around the Deblers, there are symbols of happiness. Dozens of family photos decorate their home, representing past and present generations. They have 12 grandchildren. They have family nearby, including their youngest son Scott, who lives with them. They first came to Whidbey Island after visiting family by motor home following retirement. Lawrence spent 31 years as a civilian aircraft electrician working at Air Force bases all over the country. Wanting to escape the Sacramento heat, the Deblers decided Whidbey Island looked like a nice permanent spot to land for their retirement years. They’ve lived full-time on the island since 1997, keeping each other company. They wouldn’t want it any other way. “It’s like anything else,” Edsella said, “marriage has its ups and downs. We try to do our best to keep our scraps to a minimum.” Edsella said a successful marriage spanning seven decades also has required considerable patience, at least on her part. “You’ve got to have lots of patience and he doesn’t have any,” she quipped. “I try to. I was the only female around five boys.”

Lewandowski was one of 120 children who participated in the derby, according to Lori Rhodenbaugh, derby committee chair. A count that included parents was never tallied but she estimated the total crowd at more than 250. “That got a little exciting for us,” Rhodenbaugh said. “Last year we had 58.” It was the best turnout in recent memory. Organizers say the unusually large crowd was a result of the nice weather and fliers handed out at the Forth of July parade. Whatever the case, attendance was great and everywhere you looked people were smiling and having fun. “This is fantastic,” said Valerie Cyr, an Oak Harbor resident. “We’ve only been on the island for a year but we love it. Great family fun.” Her 10-year-old, Isabelle, appeared to be having a good time as well. That is, after she got over her initial revulsion of the squid bait that was being passed out by derby officials. “Ewww,” she said with a shudder. The fish didn’t seem to share her opinion, however. Isabelle had never caught a fish in her life but managed to land five within the first 30 minutes of the event using the slimy bait.

Others were even luckier. Connor Perelka, 5, scored big when he successfully hauled up what appeared to be the largest fish of the day with dad’s help. They rushed it over to the judge’s scale and weighed in a 1.1-pound salmon. It earned the young angler “Biggest Fish” of the day in the junior boys division. “That was awesome,” said his obviously proud father. “He’s a little fisherman.” Alexis Lumpkin took first in the same category for girls while Brayden McGhee and Amira Walton won “Most Fish” for the boys and girls divisions. For older kids, ages 6-12, Linkin Lugo and Cali Pretti won for “Biggest Fish” and Cole Valdez and Anyssa Yakubchak were first in “Most Fish.” Following the derby, everyone was treated to a hot dog lunch at the Oak Harbor Yacht Club. The organization was the host of this year’s derby and, all in all, it was a great event, said Gary Jandzinski, captain of the club’s buccaneers. The weather was beautiful, there was a rockin’ turnout and everyone seemed to have a good time. “This is Oak Harbor community,” Jandzinski said. “This is what small towns in America are still about.”

Merrill said the woman suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment. A firefighter became woozy on the scene and was also taken to the hospital for treatment of heat exhaustion and dehydration. The fire started on a couch. Merrill said the cause is under investigation but “appears to be accidental.” Firefighters were able to “knock down” the fire very quickly, Merrill said. Firefighters from his department were joined by engine companies from Navy Region Northwest and North Whidbey Fire and Rescue. “It had the potential to be a big fire,” he said. The blaze was confined to the couch, a bookcase and a table. The heat from the fire also damaged the entire structure. Merrill estimates the total damage at about $25,000. According to Merrill, the woman was treated and released from the hospital at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday; the firefighter was released a half hour earlier. Merrill said the dog is being treated by veterinarian John Mangiameli at the North Whidbey Veterinary Hospital and is doing well.
