2013 COVINGTON DAYS FESTIVAL - WHAT’S NEW?
This year brings renewed excitement for the Covington Days Festival. The festival has moved locations and is settling in at the Kohl’s Property at 17002 SE 270th Place in the northernmost parking lot. What else is new? Well, the festival is packing more entertainment and fun activities into two days instead of three. The festival will be open to the public on Saturday, July 20 from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday, July 21 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., there are no activities scheduled on Friday this year. However, everyone is encouraged to attend the first of Covington’s Summer Concert Series performance at Real Life Church at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19. Also new is Family Night on Saturday! From 6-9 p.m., families can enjoy good music, free carnival games, free
inflatables and rock wall climbs, a fun scavenger hunt for prizes, the Family Game Night Giveaway, and access to the Game Truck, too! In the Kids Zone, kids can be Green Thumb Gardeners and
Budding Chefs by getting hands on and planting bean seeds, playing with worms, making their own trail mix, and taste-testing healthy soda. Or, kids can get active with energetic activities and games pro-
vided by My Gym of Kent. On Sunday, try your hand at geocaching in the Amazing Race: Covington Days Edition! Using GPS units (please bring your own) or your smart phones, individuals or teams will be sent throughout downtown Covington on the hunt for “caches” that hold prize tickets. Interested? Sign up at the Covington Days Information Booth and be ready to race on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Oh, and its free! Festival mainstage entertainment is brought to you by Valley Medical Center. The festival parade route will begin at the Real Life Church Campus at 26201 180th Ave SE. Parade staging begins at 9 a.m. and that means road closures will begin around 9:30 a.m. and will last up until 1 p.m. The parade will enter onto 180th Ave SE and head south toward 272nd/Kent Kangley. It will turn right (or west) onto Kent Kangley and continue west to SE 169th Place SE where it will turn right (or north) and head towards the Kohl’s parking lot. The new parade route is just over one mile long and the judging stand will be located on 272nd/Kent Kangley near Panda Express and Starbucks. The parade route features sidewalks along the whole route, but snagging a spot to set up a chair or stand and watch the parade near the judge’s stand will allow you to see groups perform in front of the judges. There will be multiple road closures and detours in Covington during the parade. While 272nd/Kent Kangley westbound will be closed between 180th/Wax Road and 168th Place SE, the eastbound lanes will remain open at all times. Please obey all road closure and detour signs.
Covington’s downtown area is home to several businesses and apartment complexes, including those open on weekends. Please be respectful and refrain from parking in lots designated for business customers and residents. The festival has secured parking in the Covington City Hall rear parking lot (follow signs) and at the new Valley Medical Center property behind Safeway. Both locations will require a short walk to the festival, but will ensure better traffic flow in and out of downtown Covington. There is limited on-street parking nearby.

Try one of these activities: City Council Challenge – It’s a “minute-to-win-it” style game infused with a little bit of jeopardy! Audience members can go head-tohead with Covington City Council members at fun and sometimes silly competitions like the Fluff ‘n’ Stuff,
battle it out at Covington trivia, and end with the obstacle course. The Council Challenge is sponsored by Re/Max Choice Executives. Watermelon Eating Contest – Don’t miss this annual and very popular contest at Covington Days! Contestants in four age categories will vie for the title by being the fastest to eat a piece of watermelon. The contest is sponsored by
FESTIVAL FOOD If you are headed to the festival, come hungry! Here’s a sampling of the tasty grub that will be available from the following food vendors: Covington Applebee’s – Oriental chicken salad, turkey ciabatta sandwiches, nachos, and dessert shooters. Double Dee Cupcakes – Variety of flavored gourmet cupcakes. Joe’s Shaved Ice – Shaved ice, rootbeer floats, hotdogs, chips, cotton candy, soda, lemonade, and water.
Moon’s Garden Chinese – A variety of Chinese dishes Pull My Ear – Elephant ears, funnel cakes, strawberry shortcake, foot-long sausages, onion burgers, churros, fried vegetables, curly fries, and nachos. Sunshine Tiki – Fish and chips, chicken strips, pulled pork sliders, gourmet hot dogs, onion rings, garlic or chili cheese fries, bacon-wrapped corn dogs, fish tacos, deep friend twinkies, snickers and oreos, frozen lemonade, and tons more!

Rock wall climbs are $5 with proceeds going into the festival fund. Or, stop by during Family Night on Saturday, July 20 from 6-9 p.m. and try it for free! Amazing Race: Covington Days Edition – Grab your GPS units or your smart phones and participate in the festival’s
first geocaching event on Sunday, July 21 beginning at 11 a.m. Participants will be provided a list of GPS coordinates and clues that will help them navigate to “caches” (or prize locations) throughout Covington’s downtown area. Each discovered cache will earn them a prize and ticket to enter the grand prize raffle. Sign up at the festival’s information booth! Carnival Games – Try your hand at one of our fun carnival games including skeeball, hoop shoot, moon shoot, hi striker, duck toss, and more. Earn tickets when you win and redeem them at the prize tent for cool prizes provided by Covington WalMart.
