The San Juan County Critical Areas Ordinances took a beating during three days of hearings before the state Growth Management Hearings Board on June 23, 24 and 25. Adding insult to injury, the beating took place in the council’s chambers, where eight months ago the county council ended almost a decade of labor when it passed the massive update to the county land-use regulations. At no time during three days of hearings on critical areas ordinances did anybody suggest that the contentious litigation would be decided when the Growth Management Hearings Board issues its verdict, expected in September. GMBH panel chairman William Roehl set the tone early. Within a few minutes of calling the hearings to order, Roehl reminded the petitioners’ attorneys (Sandy Mackie, for the Common Sense Alliance and P.J. Taggares Co.; Kyle Loring, for the Friends of the San Juans) that they must overcome a presumption of validity and prove the county action was “clearly erroneous in light of the goals and requirements of ” the state Growth Management Act. Teachable moments come along all the time for scientists conducting summer classes at University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Labs. But few like this. The Labs biological preserve at San Juan Island’s Argyle Lagoon became a makeshift laboratory on the afternoon of June 26, after a call came in that a 12-foot-long sixgill shark had washed up on the beach. Students and instructors bundled up a batch of scientific equipment and exited the marine facility en masse, according to biologist Adam Summers, a shark specialist and associate director of the Labs comparative biomechanics department. “This was beyond a rare opportunity,” he said. “It’s just a very big animal to have washed up on the beach in this area, and one that had just died.” Jenny Atkinson can’t recall a single incident of a sixgill stranding on a beach in the San Juans during her tenure as director of the Friday Harbor Whale Museum, which operates the local Marine Mammal Stranding Network. “I’ve heard of one or two tied-off

Persistent erosion threatens the stability of the bluff below Cattle Point Road, at the south end of San Juan Island.

Over and up about 300 feet. That’s how far a section of Cattle Point Road will be moved uphill at the south end of San Juan Island, along the west-facing slope of Mount Finlayson, to prevent it from falling into the sea. After nine years of study and review, the National Parks Service, Federal Highway Administration and Western Federal Lands Highway Division last week announced that each has approved its own “Record of Decision” in which Alternative B of the Cattle Point
on a dock,” she said, “but never one that’s washed up on a beach.” Sixgills, also known as cow sharks, are deep-water creatures, at home in the outer ocean at depths as great as 3,000 feet. The name reflects its distinctive feature, as all other sharks have five gills. Slow-moving yet deadly, they prey on large fish and other sharks by methodically sidling up next to an intended target and then attacking with an enormous burst of speed. Lopez Island’s Gene Helfman, professor emeritus at the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology, said that because sixgills live at such great depths not a lot is known about their behaviors. However, he said the prevailing theory is that females venture into shallow and protected inland waters of Puget Sound to give birth. Helfman noted that a 14-footlong female sixgill was carrying 80 embryos, or “pups”, as they’re called,

Sheriff’s Log San Juan County Sheriff ’s Department reported responding to these calls: June 12: A Friday Harbor man was given 30 days to pull up anchor and leave the northwest side of Brown Island, where he has reportedly been moored illegally for more than a year. The 66-year-old denies the accusations of nearby property owners who claim to have seen him dumping waste overboard and operating a generator all night long. June 13: An alert about an intruder outside a Lopez Island man’s front door prompted a late-night
search for a woman wearing no clothes after she wandered away from the 83-year-old’s Jackrabbit Lane home. The 59-year-old, found at her nearby home, was examined by paramedics before being flown to an off-island hospital for evaluation. June 16: A San Juan Island woman was ticketed for a public nuisance violation after her dog attacked and injured a neighbor’s dog. The woman’s dog reportedly has a reputation of roaming loose and acting aggressively in its Timber Lane neighborhood.

June 22: A single shot fired from an unknown weapon shattered a glass door and a glass panel of deck railing in an apparent act of vandalism on Brown Island. Deputies suspect someone either deliberately took aim at the glass fixtures or accidentally shattered them with a shot fired from a trail near the water’s edge. The projectile that caused the damage has yet to be recovered. n An Orcas Island man was arrested for DUI after he reportedly missed the entrance to his driveway and drove into a ditch. The 58-year-old, who was attempting to free his sedan at the time of the arrest, was taken into custody outside his Orcas Road home at about 10:30 p.m. n An Orcas Island man was arrested for DUI following a late-night misadventure in the parking lot of Island Market. The 42-year-old, taken into custody at about 2:30 a.m., reportedly tried to exit the lot but drove nose-first into a ditch instead. n Two warrants prompted the arrest of an Orcas Island woman who authorities had been unable to locate for two months. The 24-year-old, who faces felony charges, was taken into custody without incident at her Geiser Way home at about 8 p.m. June 23: A 4-year-old boy was shaken but uninjured
after his family’s van drifted backwards down a hill, across a roadway and came to a stop after smacking into a maple tree in Lopez Village. The boy, whose father had gotten out of the van to throw away a dirty diaper at the time, reportedly put the gear shift into neutral or reverse and the van began to roll. The father reportedly had switched the engine off before exiting the van. June 24: A Lopez Island woman was warned to cease and desist strolling along the waterfront by Otis Perkins Park following complaints by a neighbor about trespassers walking on her private beach. The 68-year-old, though reportedly aware of the transgression, noted she has been walking that same stretch of waterfront for 35 years. June 25: An apparent theft of a boat and trailer from an Orcas Island marina turned out to be a brazen move by an Everett woman in the midst of divorce proceedings with her estranged husband. The 33-year-old drove away from Brandt’s Landing with the 17-foot vessel in tow, boarded a ferry and was later pulled over and questioned by authorities in Anacortes. The woman, a part-owner of the boat, reportedly told officers that she has no intention of returning the vessel. —Scott Rasmussen

News briefs Ranker lands $1M for FHHS ‘STEM’ program
In the middle of a divisive state Senate budget session that ended only last week, Sen. Kevin Ranker (D-Orcas Island) chalked up a million dollar capital budget appropriation for the Friday Harbor H i g h School STEM program. T h e money will be used to remodel the techvocational Kevin Ranker education building, now dilapidated and in need of major upkeep, into a functional Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program center. Because it's a capital, not operating, appropriation, the money must be used for "bricks and mortar" - and for equipment and technology. Superintendent Rick Thompson praised and thanked Ranker for securing the appropriation. "Kevin's given us a great boost for our STEM program and for the entire school system," said Thompson, pointing out that the school had recently received a "Lighthouse Grant" for curriculum and

"STEM builds on itself, giving us leverage to obtain other competitive grants and to put tax money to good use, so that our kids get the best education possible." Females can store sperm from multiple males and then give birth to a litter of pups that have a different genetic makeup from their siblings, he noted. Back at Argyle Lagoon, Summers said that the call the Labs received suggested the massive female might still be alive and that it may be carrying “pups”. Its body appeared to be completely intact. Neither suggestion turned out to be true, Summers said. Still, he noted some people who saw the shark before the team of scientists and students arrived on the beach reported seeing some degree of movement in it. He said that post-mortem twitching of nerves was the most likely cause. Given the size of the shark, Summers estimates its age at anywhere between 25-50 years. It was examined, dissected and various parts were carted back to the Labs for further study, but the cause of its death remains undetermined, Summers said. “There’s no sign of trauma or of an area of a big parasitic condition,” he said. “It might just be a case of old age.”

of the state’s goals and requirements, they unfairly damaged his clients property rights, and were therefore “clearly erroneous,” he said. Arguing for Friends of the San Juans, Loring hammered the county on the “results of the process,” not the process itself. He said some of the results that needed correction were “too many exemptions, not enough buffers, unproven mitigation, and inadequate implementation.” “An abundance of science revealed that wetlands, fish, and wildlife are suffering current harm and the CAO would fail to protect them from additional injury in the future,” added Friends Executive Director Stephanie Buffum Field, who assisted Loring. After every attack from Mackie or Loring, Vira compared the county’s statute to the controlling state regulations and statutes, saying that because the county’s results were consistent with the law, the county’s results were clearly not erroneous. Vira, however, faces her own tough precedent. A review of Hearings Board decisions shows that the board rarely validates a first attempt by any county at writing CAO updates or other development regulations. The “good ones”

simply don’t get challenged. And even if Mackie or Loring – attacking the CAOs from opposite pointsof-view – can’t convince the three-member hearings board, each of them can still appeal any board decision to Superior Court and the state Court of Appeals. Whether the county council or superior court is the next venue for “Friends of the San Juans, et al., v. San Juan County,” the CAO still has months or years of further arguments ahead. After 20 hours of hearings, presiding officer Roehl called a halt to the hearings within minutes of the scheduled time – a schedule that made sure the board could make the afternoon ferry to Anacortes. Roehl praised parties and their attorneys, saying the arguments were “very well done” and “everyone did an excellent job.” But he wasn’t going to just let anybody think that “Friends of the San Juans, et al., v. San Juan County” was all wrapped up. “Because of the complexities of the ordinances and the depth of the arguments,” Roehl said, the board might request supplemental briefs on one of more issues. It doesn’t sound like the hearings board feels the case is almost over. The attorneys probably don’t think so, either.

Mary ‘Celia’ Gregory: 1916—2013
Mary Celia Carter Gregory passed away Sunday, June 23, 2013 at The Village at the Harbour, Friday Harbor, Wash., at the age of 96. She had been a Village resident for the past five years. Celia was born Nov. 2, 1916 to Cecil and Laura (Sargent) Carter and spent almost her entire life living in Friday Harbor. She was very proud of her island heritage and loved living on the island. She was the last living sibling of the Cecil Carter family having been preceded in death by brothers Gordon, Neil and Alan. Celia spent her childhood growing up in Friday Harbor, surrounded by family who had been on the island for two generations. She enjoyed telling stories of island experiences, particularly time spent at the Carter Beach cabin with her brothers, or the “boys”, as she called them. She was very happy to relate her experience working for her dad at the San Juan County Bank and spoke often

about the respect she had for her mother's dedication and hard work, raising four active children. She had many good stories of happy family times. Celia graduated valedictorian of her class in 1934 from Friday Harbor High School and went on to further her education at the University of Washington. It was at the university where she and her (now deceased) husband, Robert Gregory, became soul mates and were later married in Friday Harbor on Sept. 7, 1941. Following the wedding, she and Robert lived in the Seattle area for a short time. They returned to Friday Harbor in 1947 and began raising their own family. Her two daughters survive her: Pamela (John) Rogers of Friday Harbor, and Leslie (Allen) Hyko of Bellingham. She leaves behind four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Corinne (Alan Carter), as well as many nieces and nephews.

Celia was a life-long member of the Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church. She was active in the local medical guild, garden club and played in many of the local bridge groups. She also loved to play golf and had many enjoyable days on the golf course. She and Robert were active in the yacht club and spent many years cruising the island waters and Canadian islands with the two girls and friends. The family wishes to recognize and thank the staff at the Village at the Harbour for their wonderful care and support for the last five years, particularly the last three weeks. You were wonderful! get help for that.” Approval of the Records of Decision allows the federal agencies to begin collaborating with San Juan County on a final design and construction of the project, pending funding. National Parks expects to hear back soon about its application for a $5.5 million grant from the federal lands highway division, Taylor said. In September, Alternative B was identified as the preferred alternative for realignment of the road as part of the project’s environmental impact statement. It calls for moving a 4,950-foot section of the road about 300-feet upslope
from its present location, which skirts along Mount Finlayson, and is expected to protect the road from erosion for about 100 years. Dietzman said the bluff on which Cattle Point Road winds along NPS property and a portion of state land loses about 1-2 inches a year to erosion. There is no imminent danger of the road collapsing, she said. “We’re safe for now, but we have contingencies in case something extraordinary happens,” she said. If all the pieces fall into place, the biggest being the federal grant, Dietzman said the project should be “shovel ready” by mid-2014.

Regarding the takeover of hospitals by Catholic organizations, something should be made clear: Catholic hospitals do not take more charity cases than other non-profit hospitals. They could not stay in business if they did. They do, however, inflate the costs of their services for reporting purposes to make it look like they are

Farewell address: a year in review
My thanks to the San Juan County citizens, council members and staff who helped me keep things moving forward this past year as your interim county manager. While there are plenty of items still on the To Do-list, we really had a very successful list of goals accomplished: n Governance Transitions: With the charter amendments approved in November, Bob Jean we have now had three county councils, and with the arrival of Mike Thomas, three county administrators/ managers. Somehow we made it through. n GMA Compliance: For the first time in 21 years, San Juan County achieved compliance from the State with the Growth Management Act, which opens additional state grant and funding options to the county. n Budget Stabilization : Thanks largely to voter approval of the public safety sales tax, we were able to end five years of major budget cuts and adopt a stable three-year budget forecast through 2015. n CAO: Rejecting a “one-size-fits-all” federal/state approach the county adopted a site-specific approach, trying to balance environmental protection and maximum

While it is complex and challenges have yet to be ruled upon by the Growth Management Hearings Board, the county is committed to streamlining regulations and continuing to seek balance. n Solid Waste Transition: Moving from a county-run to public-private system has proven more challenging and taken longer than anticipated, but this allowed each island to come up with its own solution: Lopez Solid Waste District, the Town/ County/Launtenbach agreement on San Juan, and expanded ORS service on Orcas. n SJC3 County Community Conversations – As part of reviewing county services, service levels, and reshaping county government to better meet the needs of residents today and in the future, the Conversations held on Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, and San Juan were a great success. The results provide guidance for the 2014 budget and beyond. I’ll leave it to council Chairman Jamie Stephens and new county Manager Mike Thomas to address the remaining goals for 2013 and into 2014, but for my part, my thanks to all for your help (and constructive criticism) along the way. ‘STEM’-tastic In this place that heroes call home Even if you’re a policy wonk who has paid close attention to the special session budget wars in Olympia, you may have missed state Sen. Kevin Ranker’s $1 million budget coup for Friday Harbor High School. Ranker, a Democrat, convinced the Republicanled “majority coalition” to put a million bucks into a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) building in Friday Harbor. The money gives a major boost to the one of the best new ideas in education, as Superintendent Rick Thompson, Career and Tech Education Director Larry Wight and the school board implement the recently inaugurated STEM program at FHHS. The district is making a major move to turn the high school into a STEM program showplace after being designated a STEM Lighthouse School by the state earlier this year. While the prior designation was important, only $19,000 came with the honor. This appropriation puts the school district directly into the money stream to make the high school into a fully functioning, fully-funded STEM school. Ranker, Thompson and the school board have put our schools and, ultimately, our children, squarely on the path to success. Congratulations are in order, and so is a reminder that the present glory must be but the first step to future achievement.

Memories of hard times somehow seem to fade in these scenic islands

hree weeks ago, when the Agricultural Guild opened the historic and reborn Brickworks building, I saw artist Bobby Warren, with his modern hand-carved, painted windmill weather vanes. I stopped to see if I could afford one. Before I could ask, he said: “Howard, you’re just the one I wanted to see, you were in the service during World War II weren’t you?” “Four years,” I replied, “Then two during Korea.” “Great!” he said. “My uncle Joe Aviles is sitting on that bench. He was on the Saratoga aircraft carrier. I’d like a picture of you together.” “Okay,” I said,”but he might not like being with an infantry shavetail.” We walked over as Bobby looked for his mom and dad to take the photo. Along came Father Ted Leche, retired priest who served at St. Davids and the other island Episcopalians for decades. He saw me standing with Bobby’s uncle, whose hat listed his service on the historic Saratoga. “Hey, that was my ship too,” Father Ted Howard said. “I was in the signal/radio unit.” The USS Saratoga was a super air- Schonberger craft carrier, one of four ordered by Columnist President Eisenhower. It fought during the Vietnam War, but mostly served in the Mediterranean in the ’50s. “Mi Gawd” said Bobby's uncle. “That was everybody’s favorite stop. You guys had a real coffee machine around the clock, so that people called to the bridge were delighted to get real coffee on their way up and down.” Aviles went into the Navy at age 17 (which required his parent’s release if under the age of 18). He joined in 1943, and after joining the Saratoga he was in some of the greatest battles in the Pacific: Tarawa, Bougainville, Rabaul, Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima and other spots where Japanese airports and bastions were targeted. He left the service in 1946 as a Gunner’s Mate First Class Seaman, having manned the helm of a famed aircraft carrier at age 20. He signed up with the National Guard, but decided he would try the Army in 1948. He was sent to support the Marines with an armored tank unit at the Battle of Inchon in Korea. After the DMZ was negotiated between North and South Korea, he decided to end his military service in 1953. Never wounded, he has been a sturdy representative of

the millions of veterans who have seen the devastation of war and respects all those who sacrificed their lives and limbs in the horror of war. I thought of that meeting last week when I heard of Peg Hoeppner’s passing (her memorial service was at the Presbyterian church last Saturday). Peg was the widow of Fred Hoeppner, an ensign on the Battleship California, which was destroyed at Pearl Harbor. Another islander, Chuck Sharman, reported for duty to ensign Fred Hoeppner on Pearl Harbor day and when the bombs started to drop asked for orders, was told to raise the flag and then save anyone who needed assistance. Fred, who retired on the island near Snug Harbor became a leader in yacht and sailing activities and for many years wrote many a marine-related column, “Along the Waterfront”, for the Journal, until his death. Sharman had his boat-home at Shipyard Cove for decades, where he produced the comic strip “Saltchuck”, which was syndicated in many newspapers. He fought cancer for years and had school kids and others submitting comic strip ideas that were drawn up by islanders for months, until he could get back to his regular work. It’s small wonder that we have so many boaters and exGi’s living in these lovely islands. Roy Matsumoto was persuaded by the late Tom Bogardus, (Roy’s captain) to come here to live after his outstanding and heroic service with Merrill’s Marauders and subsequent 30-year career with the U.S. Army. There’s something about these islands that makes past troubles become smaller, whether they are from war times or other hard times. Thus we have one of the largest American Legion posts in the state, capably led by Shannon Plummer. Enjoy this Fourth of July, guys and gals. You all deserve it. — Go with the F.L.O.W. Just this week while walking, we heard a desperate, high-pitched cry sounding over and over again. It seemed to be coming from Third Lagoon. It was impossible to ignore the unmistakable sound of a bird alerting just about the entire world of a clear and present danger. With our binoculars we followed the persistent ruckus towards a small jutting of rocks just off shore. A Black Oystercatcher, with his long, spectacular neon beak, was poised on the rocky point. Below, on a smaller nearby rock surrounded by water, another Oystercatcher shrilly sounded the alarm. This must be Mr. and Mrs.
Oystercatcher protecting the nest. They likely have perfected the communication between couples for some time, as this species is committed to family values and they mate loyally for as long as 20 years. Overhead the sky appeared blue and calm. Then seemingly out of nowhere an immature bald eagle descended low over the rocks. With loud, operatically high-pitched squeals, one of the pair took flight and with apparent fearlessness pursued the eagle. Oystercatchers normally fly at a fairly low elevation over the water, but this one followed the eagle high into the distance. Envision a small very loud black siren chasing a large, gawky teenager eagle, winging it high and fast—I’m curious how eagle parents
react to such behavior. Black Oystercatchers, along with being loyal mates, are excellent parents. Each nesting couple produces an average of three eggs per season. Unlike Chickadees, for instance, which become self-sufficient in only two or three weeks, Oystercatcher parents must find little mollusks, husk them, and provide feasting for an entire year. Learning how to shell mollusks takes that long. During the year of training, the soft four-and-a-half inch orange beak of the young ones gradually hardens into a powerful double-edged sword, a tool that can pry open the clutched shells of bivalves, perhaps including an oyster on a rare occasion — this is not at all See Lagoon, Page 10

Kipton Johnson Roberts: Jan. 10, 1934 — June 26, 2013 Kip passed away peacefully on June 26, 2013 in Friday Harbor surrounded by his loving family. Kip was born in Friday Harbor, Wash., Jan. 10, 1934 as a fifth-generation islander. Kip’s dad was a navy man, and as a young boy he moved around a lot, splitting his time between Friday Harbor and other elementary schools throughout the states. When Kip was in the sixth grade, after his dad’s passing, his mother Lorena, older brother Hugh and younger brother David, settled in Friday Harbor. After graduation, Kip and three of his high school buddies, Richard Nash, Gordon Middleton and Trevor Beeston, joined the air force. When he completed basic training and before shipping out overseas to Germany, he and Kitty Wade, his childhood sweetheart, were married in the Wade family home (Cannery Cottage) in Friday Harbor. Kip spent a year-and-a-half in Fürstenfeldbruck in Bavaria, Germany. He returned to the states and was joined by his wife and 11-month-old daughter, Cherie, when he was transferred to Great Falls, Mont. to finish his military service. Kip decided he wanted to be a teacher; so with family in tow, he enrolled at Western Washington College of Education in Bellingham, Wash. to obtain his degree. Kip began his teaching career at his Alma Mater, Friday Harbor
High School. In addition to being a classroom educator he also taught woodshop, JV basketball, drivers education (some may remember the “cry baby house” scares) and was both girls and boys tennis coach, winning many state championships. Speaking of tennis; Kip was the driving force in establishing the installation of what was then known as the lower tennis courts; at the same time accomplishing his dream of providing state-of-the-art courts for his team and the community. Taking a leave of absence from teaching for several years, Kip went Kip Roberts: 1934 — 2013 into exploring self-business opportunities and then returned to teach sixth grade. Students in his 6th-grade class will fondly remember the famous lunch-time milk cards and other creative projects that showed Kip’s passion for art and teaching combined. Kip retired from teaching in 1989.

Cuddly, charismatic, but not necessarily abandoned; resist the urge to intervene

e are officially heading into summer and the start of the harbor seal pupping season in the San Juan Islands. Once it begins, seal pups are sometimes encountered on the beach and there are some important things to remember. The first point to keep in mind is the normal behavior of a mother seal and its pup. It is not unusual for the harbor seal mother to leave its young on the beach as she returns to the ocean to forage for the food she needs to produce enough high-fat milk to support her pup. In the early stages of its life, the young pup does not have the insulation or the proper swimming proficiency to keep up with its mother. It takes 3-6 weeks for the pup to triple its weight, drinking the mother’s milk that is made up of 40-50 percent fat, before it is weaned and able to forage on its own. When a pup is actually stranded and not waiting for its mother’s return, it will appear lethargic and thin from lack of nutrition. These stranded pups have often been separated from their mothers prior to being weaned. This separation can occur in a number of ways including: inexperience of a first-time mother, boat activity, human interference/disturbance, injury or illness. Unfortunately many of these pups will not survive; however, this is Mother Nature’s way of keeping the population in check and maintaining the healthiest animals possible. Harbor seals are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Picking up a stranded harbor seal is prohibited by law. If you come across a seal pup without its mother, please report it to the marine mammal stranding hotline at 1-800-562-8832. The San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network is a program with the Friday Harbor Whale Museum and has trained volunteers authorized to respond to marine mammal strandings within the county of San Juan. Last year alone, the stranding network received over 110 calls concerning harbor seals and more than 140 total stranded marine mammal calls. As a 10-year resident of San Juan Island, she served as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent for the Department of Homeland Security until 2007. She is survived by her brother, Stephen Shubert, her sister Donna Nelson and her trusty and loyal service dog, Rocco.

With all the hunting, feeding, guarding, and chasing predators, how do they get any rest? Well, they rest only one leg at a time. You can often see them resting just off shore on little Friday, July 5, “Picnic” starring William Holden rocky outcrops with a single pink leg posted on a rock, and Saturday, July 6 , “The Long Hot Summer” the other one tucked up under a wing. he music of the Beatles takes listeners through a journey of time, melding different genres from the late 50s to the early 70s. The Beatles shaped not only music through these eras but influenced the people of an entire generation. Devoted fans wanted to be the Beatles, mimicking everything from haircuts and clothing to philosophies. For musicians yet born - their style and innovative music set the standard for future tunes. The group Abbey Road LIVE! is a Beatles-tribute act that focuses on the music instead of mimicking the famous foursome’s look. They bring to life some of the more mature and complex tunes and leave the mop-top haircuts and vintage Rickenbacker guitars out of the show. The band has expanded its scope to include more than 100 Beatles tunes, from all eras of the Fab Four’s career. The band specializes in complete, start-tofinish album performances of masterpieces such as “Abbey Road,” “Magical Mystery Tour,” “Rubber Soul,” “Revolver” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.” Abbey Road LIVE! is coming to Friday Harbor, Saturday, July, 6, for a return engagement at San Juan Community Theatre. The band takes the stage at 8 p.m. We talked with band member Michael Wegner, pictured at left, to find out a little more about the life of a Beatles-tribute act. Journal: What is the hardest part about playing music of the Beatles? MW: The vocal harmonies. There’s a pretty high standard to live up to with vocals by John Lennon, Paul McCartney

and George Harrison and we want to do the music justice. Also, many of the songs we play were never performed live by the Beatles, since they stopped touring in 1966. A lot of their recordings used funky studio tricks that can’t really be replicated live so one of the big challenges is how to adapt those songs to a live setting. Journal: You have been playing together since 2002. What keeps a group together? MW: Musical diversity helps. If you do the same thing night after night, it will get old fast. Fortunately, Beatles music covers a lot of ground from pop, rock, country to psychedelic so that makes it fun. Plus there’s so much music. We have well over 100 Beatles songs in our repertoire, but there’s also at least 100 we’ve never played. So we’re never short on “new” material. We are all involved in other bands and original songwriting projects as well, so that keeps us all pretty balanced. Journal: What is the weirdest thing that has ever happened at a show? MW: Probably the time a topless middle-aged woman jumped up on stage at a hippie festival in Oregon. We were playing “When I’m 64” and she was just bopping around in nothing but a tie-dye skirt with a big grin on her face. We just kept on playing and the audience didn’t seem to mind. It was a classic Oregon Country Fair moment. Journal: What is most rewarding about keeping this music alive in a live setting, rather than people just listening to Beatles cds or records? MW: It’s great to see all the different ages in our audience. We have six year olds to 60 year olds and beyond in the crowd all singing along and dancing. It’s reassuring to see high school and college kids being so enthusiastic about Beatles music 50 years after the band first appeared on the baby-boomer scene. There’s nothing better than looking out at a group of people of all ages, arm in arm, singing together “All you need is love!” Journal: How many times have you performed on the islands and why do you keep returning? MW: Probably for the same reason your readers continue to live on the islands and visit. We have loved the San Juans ever since our first visit to Lopez in 2008. So this will be our sixth time returning. The people are great, the land is beautiful and it makes a nice break from the Georgia heat [the band is based out of Athens, Ga.]. Newlyweds Mack McCauley and Wendy Buffum-McCauley joined the ranks of Friday Harbor art gallery owners with the grand opening of WM McCauley Gallery, Sunday, June 29. Highlighted at the opening show of WM McCauley Gallery, located at 232 A Street, near the town’s newly installed whale-tail sculpture, “Fluke”, and across the street from Market Chef, are paintings by Buffum-
McCauley, Lopez Island artist Sylvia Chesley Smith and part-time Lopez resident Tom Hoffman of Seattle. “I feel honored that we will be able to showcase the diverse range of works by my peers and provide a fun place for us to engage as a community of artists and art enthusiasts, as well as to help visitors and residents enhance their art collections,” Buffum-McCauley said in announcing the opening. The gallery itself features a crisp “white-box” design created specifically to enhance the display of exhibits. Paintings and other wall art, and selected works from nearly a dozen local artists, will be featured at various times during the gallery’s first season, according to Mack McCauley. “It is our hope that the addition of our gallery will help raise awareness of the thriving arts community of the San Juan Islands,” he said.
