Dear reader,

There’s nothing more comforting, more exciting – more enjoyable – than being reacquainted with something you used to love. This tends to happen to me a lot – with music, and books, and old stuffed animals tucked in the corner of my room. Especially during the summer. I was pondering this the other day when I came across an album I hadn’t listened to in about seven years: “Do You Feel” by The Rocket Summer. Whoaaa – did that bring back some memories! They were good ones: driving with my friends and going to the beach and playing in the sun. For this issue of The Scene, it’s all about making summer memories. Whether it be going to your favorite bubble tea spot. Or enjoying a plate of summer barbecue. Maybe you’ll make a memory by going to a summer concert or getting away for the weekend at one of the unique destinations we’ve included on our “staycation” list. Alternative to CPAP Therapy Today approximately 18 million, or 1 in 15 Americans experience Sleep Apnea, a sleep disorder involving the airway that disrupts a person’s sleep often leading to excessive daytime sleepiness, irritability, overall poor health, and in some cases, even death. Originally from Atlanta, their speciality is southern barbecue, smoking meats with mesquite wood. The shows you don’t want to miss this summer

Fun for the entire family Timber! Outdoor Music Festival offers great tunes, good times for the whole crew BY KEEGAN PROSSER When Kevin Sur got involved in helping plan Doe Bay Festival on Orcas Island five years ago, making the event a familyfriendly destination wasn’t at the heart of his mission. For him and his partners, the goal was to make a festival artists would be excited about - one they would want to pull up to after 12 grueling hours on the road. The fact it ended up being something the entire family could enjoy was a bit of a fluke. “We realized that Doe Bay was this really family-friendly thing when we saw all these people bringing kids – and these families having fun at our events,” says Sur. As part of Seattle-based production company, Artist Home, Sur and his partners have become the go-to team for this type of event. That’s why, after seeing the success of Doe Bay and the group’s Summer Bonfire Series (at Seattles’ Golden Gardens), King County Parks approached Sur. The goal: to create a new festival at Tolt-MacDonald Park, just outside Carna-

tion. “[King County Parks] had a vision of it being a perfect place for a music festival – and more so, a perfect place for our kind of music festival,” Sur says. After viewing the 540 acres of pristine Puget Sound community space at the confluence of the Tolt and Snoqualmie rivers, Timber! was born. Taking place July 26-27, the inaugural Timber! Outdoor Music Festival is looking to follow in the same tradition of already beloved Artist Home productions, but on a bit of a bigger scale. The festival itself will include four stages: the main stage; the Campfire stage, located in a mini-amphitheatre built by the Boy Scouts; an indoor stage at Pete’s, a honkytonk spot located in Carnation; and a stage inside a barn on the park grounds. And the talent? You’ll find sets from the Helio Sequence, Fruit Bats, Quasi, Noah Gundersen, Lemolo, Bryan John Appleby and Kithkin, among others. “Timber! is already going to be a lot louder of a festival than Doe Bay,” Sur says.

Boom time in Bellevue Day-long events in Downtown and Lake Boren Parks

The Eastside's largest fireworks display will burst over Bellevue on Thursday, July 4 at the city's Downtown Park. Come early, stretch out your picnic blanket and chairs and enjoy a full day of food and festivities. While personal barbecues aren't allowed, the 20-acre park will be filled with a total of 22 food vendors offering everything from traditional American burgers, New Orleans Cajun food, Greek Gyros, German sausages, Mexican and Japanese food, and those summertime staples kettlecorn, elephant ears and shaved ice. There will also be a variety of musical acts throughout the day along with a family fun zone that will include kids' activities, some free, others with a fee. The culmination of the day begins with a performance by the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra beginning at 9:30 p.m. and

then accompanying the fireworks at 10:05 p.m. The event is free, as is parking at several locations including City Hall at 450 110th Ave. NE and at the Bellevue Collection, which includes Bellevue Square, Bellevue Place and Lincoln Square. A number of Metro buses also serve downtown. A reminder: Pets, alcohol, personal fireworks, weapons of any kind and smoking are no-nos at the park. While Fido isn't allowed at the park, a new event this year will let leashed dogs and their people participate in a 4K walk. The Four on the Fourth Dog Jog and Walk will start and end at Ashwood Park, next to the Bellevue Library, which will offer free parking. Registration is from 7:30-9 a.m. with the walk from 9 a.m. to noon. There's even a dog costume contest at 10:15 a.m. Those looking for a more intimate

have been forever fascinated by the idea of selling at a flea market. But the idea of getting strangers to pay me for the things I choose has always been super scary. Nevertheless I let my son, Sweetie Boy, convince me to rent a booth at the Fremont Sunday Market. On the eve of our first booth I was tired and cranky. We arrived in Fremont with four times more stuff than we needed and not a clue about what we were doing. The day flew by. My heart glowed when customers clapped their hands at finding their new favorite Heija Nunn thing. And it was thrilling to watch people fall in love with a piece of art or pick up a weird thing for the very same reasons I bought it. We found new homes for things like a Guinness beer poster, the bug painting I patiently hunted over two days, baskets, ice buckets, a Hobbit puzzle, jewelry and art glass. Near the end of the day the chicest woman in Seattle held up a painting Sweetie Boy had insisted on buying. He gave her his price, she offered less. He countered. She stayed firm and then she walked away in an elegant gust. Sweetie Boy was speechless, I was impressed. Near the end of the day his elegant quarry returned. As she picked out a set of cordials (and I firmly believe she will actually use them) Sweetie Boy jumped in to tell her she could have his painting for her price to which she graciously agreed and even more graciously spared him any signs of "I win!" That night I sat down next to daughter Sistafoo on the sofa to watch a movie. I had a glass of wine in one hand and my iPad in the other. About five minutes later Sistafoo yelped and I felt a damp trickle on my leg. I had fallen asleep sitting up. I poured wine on Sistafoo's shoulder (barely tasted, I will point out) finally giving her something to share with future therapists. We had so much fun that first time we did it again on another Sunday. In the past month I have talked to many people who have also wanted to have a flea market booth or pursue another bashful dream. I am 44 now and can't believe I let this much time pass between scary leaps and I don't plan to let it happen again. Maybe the real reason Nike shoes are so collectible has less to do with fashion than passion. Because "Just Do It" is valuable advice indeed. Adam Ray may call Los Angeles home now, but the comedian and actor honed his craft growing up in the Greater Seattle area – something he admits influences his humor. “Growing up in my neighborhood, people were chill and accepting,” Ray says. “And I had really funny friends around me growing up. I surrounded myself with people that made me laugh.” Along with his standup comedy, Ray produces a slew of short comedy videos for his website, and released his debut CD “In Your Boobs” last year. Ray’s TV credits include ABC’s “According to Jim” and MTV’s “Human Giant” - and this summer he’s staring alongside Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in “The Heat.” The Scene recently caught up with Ray in advance of his first set of headlining hometown shows:

scene: If you had to describe your act in two words what would they be? Adam Ray: Awkwardly personal? scene: What inspires your “awkwardly personal” act?

AR: I pull a lot of my material from my own experiences because it’s more exciting to talk about. I feel like the best comedy is when the comedian is excited about what they’re taking about. It’s kind of challenging to make personal experiences relatable to an audience… but I take pride in being able to do that, and being able to share that with audiences.

scene: You dabble in several mediums – making videos and podcasts, acting and doing standup. What do you enjoy most? AR: I came down [to L.A.] to do acting, so I consider myself an actor first. That’s what I want to do more. Standup up keeps you busy. And the more you do it, the more you hone your voice. Standup is great because it’s so raw – anything can happen. Standup is kind of my live fix; I did a lot of stage acting in school and [standup provides] that live audience fix I miss from doing plays.

AR: Yeah. I think everybody - that’s one of the great things about standup - you get people from all walks of life. People from Seattle are really open-minded - so that’s beneficial in standup.

scene: What’s it like performing in your home state? How is it different? AR: There is a flavor of acceptance in Seattle. People like performing [here] because it’s an incredibly open, smart audience. I use my words a lot, I’m not a one-liner comic; I tell stories. It’s nice to perform in a place where people listen – and don’t just want to here dirty stuff. I mean they’re pretty cerebral, they want to hear smart jokes. But they’ll also love when a dwarf gives someone a lap dance for 10 minutes. scene: What can audiences expect at the Parlor Live?

scene: How was working with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy in “The Heat” (in theaters now)? AR: It was incredible. They’re two of the coolest people I’ve ever met, in addition to being some of the greatest actors we’ve seen in a long time.

AR: There’s gonna be a lot of new material – and definitely a lot more Seattle-based stuff, with the passing of marijuana laws and the NBA stuff going on. I don’t ever get too controversial about stuff; I like to have a point of view, but I’m still a comic. I feel I provide a pretty lighthearted view on things. A lot has happened in the last year that provides for good material.

scene: Do you think being from Washington makes your comedy different from other comedians?
