Everyone who knew Nataliya Vabishchevich described her as upbeat and friendly. She was smiley and well-loved, so much so that since learning of her death last Monday, friends and old clients from as far away as North Carolina have been calling Pure Chiropractic of Bellevue and Eastside Life ChiroNataliya practic of Vabishchevich Redmond where she worked nearly daily to express their condolences. Coworkers affectionately referred to her as a “Disney Princess” for her soft voice and comforting demeanor. “She had a smile that radiated every single morning she came into work,” said coworker Ashlee Bullinger. “Even when I would call her to give her her schedule I could hear her smiling through her upbeat voice.” Vabishchevich was found dead in the entryway of her Bellevue condominium in the 12700 block of NE 10th Place just before noon on June 17. She had been stabbed 72 times in her head, neck, chest and arms. On Friday, June 21 a charge of first degree murder was filed by the King County SEE MURDER, 6

Bellevue resident Laura Jones doesn’t consider herself a close friend of the Magnotti family. But she did spend much of her adolescence as a classmate to Nick Magnotti - first at Tillicum Middle School, and later, as a student at Sammamish High School. So when Jones heard through mutual friends - that Nick was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer two years ago, she wanted to help. This Saturday, Jones is doing just that - by holding a fundraiser at Impact Strength and Performance in Bellevue. The event, which is part of the gym’s weekly
“Go-Giver Bootcamp” series, is being offered for a suggested donation of $10; all proceeds from the hour-long workout will be donated to the Magnotti family. Jones started following Nick’s battle with cancer after hearing about TeamMagnotti.org, a website updated by Nick’s wife Alyssa, which also serves as a platform for friends and family to donate funds. At press time, $14,630 has been donated there. That’s where Jones learned that Nick’s cancer, Mucinous Adenocarcinoma, originated in his SEE CANCER, 3
Parts of Bellevue Square, including the Apple Store and Tiffany & Co., were flooded Tuesday night after heavy rains hit the area and at least one store remained closed throughout Wednesday as cleanup continued. The Bellevue Fire Department responded to the mall and cleanup crews worked through the night to prepare the mall for its 9:30 a.m. opening. Kemper Development’s Jennifer Leavitt said Tiffany & Co. and the LEGO store remained closed for the day and Hugo Boss worked to re open at some point Wednesday. None of the common areas of the mall were impacted. Leavitt said while flooding in the mall is not unheard of, it is usually due to a construction mishap rather than Mother Nature. “In a building like this, we deal with leaks,” she said. “We haven’t had this much water.” Flooding was also reported at Northeast Eighth Street and 100th Avenue Northeast at the Bellevue Park condos and property manager Teresa May said several units on the south and west sides of the community were affected. It’s not the first time the building have been flooded, she said., “This has been an ongoing issue,” she said. “They were out there with buckets and sandbags trying to keep it from coming in.” The community installed an enlarged catch basin with a sump pump around two years ago, at a cost of $75,000.
Sound Transit gets ready for second round of buyouts BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTER
East Link continues the property acquisition process with its second batch of residences along 112th Avenue, to include 18 lots. On June 27 (after The Reporter’s deadline) the Sound Transit Board considered a resolution authorizing the agency to purchase those parcels, which extend just south of Main Street to north of Bellefield Park
Lane. Afterward Sound Transit will assign somebody from the property department to each homeowner, beginning the course of appraisals. The resolution follows an earlier one in May, which obtained the 41 units of Carriage Hills and Carriage Place condos and aims to quicken the acquisition process for homeowners who have voiced to the Bellevue City Council and Sound Transit that they feel put on hold in the years-long process of East

Details such as the exact number of properties needed and the footprint of impact won’t be known until late this year or early next. Though not an official appraisal, neighbors along 112th also noted a five to eight percent drop in their property values on the real estate site Zillow in the days after receiving a letter from Sound Transit. According to its own standards, an acquisition by Sound Transit is not complete until all displaced residents have been relocated. “Just give me a decent comparable, replacement home…I don’t know if [Sound Transit] is aware of the market,” said Sirohi. “But they soon will be.” Earlier in the month the Surrey Downs Community Club discussed an amendment to the MOU which would allow for alternate access at Southeast 15th Street and 112th in the form of a cut-through. Members determined that the proposal would only produce more traffic and so suggested that funds instead go to the city’s cost savings efforts. Medina to cut ties with city manager
The Medina City Council and City Manager Donna Hanson will part company in mid-July following a special council meeting Wednesday night that followed an executive session. The council approved terms of a separation, first stated by one councilmember as a "termination," but did not disclose the details. Mayor Michael Luis said those will be made public once the agreement is executed. No date was given, but when executed, the public could make a public records request for the information, Luis said. Councilmembers Luis, Patrick Boyd, Doug Dicharry, Jay Decker and Katie Phelps voted to approve the separation. Councilmember David Lee voted no, saying he was uncomfortable with the terms of the agreement. Councilmember Janie Lee was out of town. After the vote, Boyd offered strong words of support for Hanson. The council agreed to meet next week to discuss the next steps in the process with input and advice from Hanson. Earlier this year, a federal court jury awarded former Medina Police Chief Jeffrey Chen $2 million. Chen had sued the city and Hanson for firing him and claimed racial discrimination. Chen is Chinese American. The eight-member jury deliberated one day before reaching a decision and personally ordered Hanson to pay $25,000 in punitive damages.

In November, Nick was able to undergo aggressive treatment and had a lengthy heated chemotherapy surgery with an oncology specialist in Omaha, Nebraska. Following the treatment, the doctors were optimistic about the procedure and had a terrific prognosis for Nick’s future. But in August of last year, shortly after Nick and Alyssa learned they were expecting their first child, the cancer returned. Categorized as Stage IV and extremely aggressive, the spread of cancer cells was far and wide within Nick’s abdomen, crowding his intestines, his spleen and his liver and causing a lot of pain and damage. The bad news, paired with the impending medical expenses, could have promised dark times for the Magnottis. Yet, through it all, they’ve remained optimistic. In a blog entry titled “Cancer is Back… And We’re Gonna Kick it…. AGAIN!!!” Nick wrote: “…Please don’t let this make you feel sad, because it doesn’t make me feel sad for even one second. The way I look at it is its just another challenge. Nothing about this is supposed to be easy. I still plan to take this cancer head on.” Another testament to Nick’s unwavering positivity comes from someone who has known him his entire life: his twin sister, Michelle.
Ecology Youth Corps to collect litter along highways
Local middle and high school students will return to Washington roadsides this summer to clean up litter tossed or dropped by motorists. The Washington Department of Ecology, which operates the litter program, urges motorists to use extra caution when they see the orange “Ecology youth working” signs along state highways. “Safety is our No. 1 priority,” said Steven Williams, regional litter administrator and coordinator for the Ecology Youth Corps (EYC). “Every driver needs to stay alert when passing a litter crew. For most crew members, it’s their first job. We’re proud of their work to help keep our roadways litter-free.” Teens, ages 14 to 17, will work this summer along roadsides in King, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties.

Celebrate the Fourth with patriotism, safety
W
e will celebrate our country’s independence next Thursday. The Fourth of July is one of our country’s most popular holidays. All cities around here – Bellevue, Medina, Hunts Point, Beaux Arts, Clyde Hill, Newcastle – ban setting off fireworks. Unfortunately, King County still allows them. The result is that personal injury or property damage is a real possibility. This isn’t to say we shouldn’t enjoy fireworks. We should. But we should leave them to the professionals. As in the past, Bellevue will provide the Eastside’s largest fireworks display at the city’s Downtown Park. There will be food, music, plenty of kids’ activities. The Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform beginning at 9:30 p.m. and then accompany the fireworks show around 10 p.m. The orchestra will continue to play after the event. Newcastle also has an evening event with fireworks at Lake Boren. Given all that, there’s no reason for individuals to buy or use fireworks. Even those touted as “safe and sane” can be dangerous. There were 354 fireworks-related injuries and fires reported to the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 2012 by fire departments and hospitals. Of the 354 reports received, there were 128 fires and 226 injuries. Here’s what happened by the numbers: ■ Seven residential fires totaling $880,500 in loss, one was caused by an illegal device, three were caused by legal fireworks and three were caused by an unknown type of firework device. ■ Twewnty-six fires and 64 injuries were caused by devices which are illegal to own or possess in our state. Telling a story – on foot
I
n January, Paul Salopek, a twotime Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, embarked on a seven-year journey across the world, starting in a dusty village in Ethiopia and ending nearly a decade later in South America. If seven years sounds like a long time, that’s because it is. Salopek is walking the entire route, Celina Kareiva the path of human migration. When asked about the project, Salopek explained that it wasn’t some sensationalist ploy to boost readership, it was about the unique story that could only be captured on foot. “After jetting around the world as a foreign correspondent, after flying into stories, after driving into them, helicoptering in, even, I thought about what it would be like
to walk between stories. Not just to see the stories we were missing by flying over them, but to understand the connective tissue of all the major stories of our day.” That message resonated with me as a journalist and a storyteller. I, too, try to make a point of letting my feet carry me to stories. Living in Seattle, I can’t afford the gas or toll money to commute daily. But above all, I think there’s a lot to be gained from this level of immersion. While on assignment, writing about a local historian, Milt Swanson, who once worked in Newcastle’s coal mines, I found myself trekking the two miles from downtown Newcastle to his doorstep at the foot of Cougar Mountain. The 40-minute trek took me through a heavily forested path. And while I probably could have traveled that same route in 10 minutes by car, I don’t think I would have been able to tell the same story behind the wheel. So much of

There’s an obvious health benefit to walking, but I think there’s also a connectivity gained. Discussions about “third places” and city design have assessed the walkability of certain Bellevue neighborhoods. Of course, walking is not always practical. The world we live in demands a faster pace, in our news, in our business and just about everything else. The desire to travel by foot more often isn’t some nostalgia for the past, it’s rooted in a urge to reconnect with our surroundings, and to better live in the present.

NSA intrigue and irony Paradoxically, perhaps the conservatives, Tea Party and Libertarians should show more of a constructive interest in the NSA leakage of correlation tracking of communications. I can imagine that access to the data bases may divulge more than a coincidental pattern between our president and his proxy outposts: ■ Numerous phone calls between President Obama and AG Holder before Justice waived the conviction of the New Black Panthers for intimidating white voters? ■ A spike in calls with NLRB members before Boeing was disallowed expansion in SC? ■ Many calls between the IRS chief and the administration during audits of major major Republican donors and applications for tax exempt entities from the Tea Party and conservatives ? ■ A surge in calls between the administration, State Department, CIA, and security when President Obama and Secretary Clinton seemed concerned that Bengazi would indicated a lack of success by the president in defeatingAl-Qaeda? ■ A lack of calls between the White House and Republicans during calls for bipartisanship by President Obama? Sometimes noisy data and disparate data bases can yield rather discerning conclusions.

Legislature leaves Boeing up in air
I
f you are of a mind to deliver a one-finger salute at mention of lawmakers in a tortuous special session, imagine what those in the hallowed suites of The Boeing Co. are thinking as they keep watch on the endless proceedings. Its posse of corporate lobbyists arrived in Olympia in January with a short but challenging wish list for legislators to fulfill. They’re waiting to see what got done. The list read something like this: Invest in training workers and educating greater numbers of engineers; improve the state’s transportation network including in and around its Everett factory; continue reforming workers’ compensation; and don’t change a state standard on fish consumption in a way Jerry Cornfield that forces them to spend major bucks on improvements at its facilities. As of Wednesday morning, Boeing had lost one for certain and couldn’t yet claim successes on any of the others. Workers’ comp won’t happen, traded away in the last rounds of state budget negotiations. A nearly $10 billion transportation package - for which the linchpin is a 10.5-cent gas tax hike - is a definite maybe. As far as the seafood debate, Boeing will end up pretty much where it is today - wondering what the environmentalist Gov. Jay Inslee is going to do and when is he going to do it. Looking at the scorecard, Boeing’s batting average is underwhelming. As much as lawmakers are the cause by not giving them

Livability discussion rescheduled Two open houses on Bellevue’s Downtown Livability initiative have been rescheduled. what they want, Boeing must shoulder some of the blame as well. Boeing is well known under the Capitol Dome for never saying exactly what it wants and what it doesn’t want to legislators. House Democrats and Inslee insist they’ve been told Boeing’s chief concerns are higher education and transportation. Members of the Senate Majority Coalition Caucus say Boeing told them its priorities are workers’ compensation and fish consumption. There was a time such scorekeeping didn’t get done because it didn’t matter. Boeing seemed to have eyes for no state but Washington. Now score is kept, for it’s no longer a monogamous relationship. Boeing has become a hound dog playing the field from one coast to the other. If Inslee and legislators honestly want Boeing to build its next generation of passenger jets in this state, they put forth a pretty unconvincing performance this session. It’s been nothing like 2003 when Washington offered up a humongous tax break and huge reforms in workers’ compensation to win the Dreamliner. There’s no question Boeing is still reaping rewards from that huge handout. But it was 2003 and, like it or not, Washington will need a splashy move to cement the aerospace behemoth’s presence here for another generation of planes let alone another century of operation.

Bellevue resident charged with child rape BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTER
A University of Washington neurobiology student and long-time Bellevue resident, Omar Abdelbadie, 22, was charged with child rape, just days before his anticipated graduation. Abdelbadie, who is originally from Cairo, Egypt and was minoring in Japanese, is accused of using marijuana to ply a 12-year-old girl, before having sex with her back at his University District apartment. The girl, who had been living with her sister had earlier that evening run away, and recounted walking “The Ave” before Abdelbadie struck up a conversation with her just before midnight. Charging papers indicate that she informed the UW student of her
age and that Abdelbadie, upon seeing the young defendant, noticed that she was dressed provocatively. According to the girl’s account, Abdelbadie bought her a drink from Safeway before offering to drive her home. When she showed no interest, they returned to his place. There they engaged in sex several times, during which he repeatedly told her “this is wrong”. The following day, Abdelbadie, joined by a friend he’d run into while walking with the girl, escorted her home, where they watched from behind a fence as she walked to her front door. Abdelbadie’s friend called police after seeing the pair acting “like a couple.” Observing the girl’s behavior, he asked her age. He later learned through

Prosecutors requested he be held without bail, citing flight risk and the violence of the crime. Vabishchevich lived with her 14-year-old son, who told police that when he left for school that morning at 7:15 a.m. she was still alive. By noon, police had labeled the condo a crime scene. Charging papers and friends’ accounts indicate that there were early signs of domestic violence. Vabishchevich had reportedly voiced her fear on several occasions. Once, several years back, a friend who was babysitting her young son said that Polak had come by the apartment, hoping to reconcile with his wife and threatening to kill her if she did not agree. “I kill people; I hurt people and don’t mess with me,” said Polak, stabbing the table with a knife during that same encounter. Vabishchevich’s son told detectives that he had seen his parents argue regularly, but never physically, adding that he hadn’t

He took up residence in Edmonds, and resumed contact with his nephew, who was close in age to his son and lived in an apartment with Polak’s sister, just a short walk from Vabishchevich. In the weeks before her death, the single mother told her son she suspected Polak may be back in Bellevue. She warned him to stay away and worried that her ex intended to kidnap the teenager. “I had no clue there was anything wrong,” said Dr. Jeremy Welch of Pure Chiropractic Bellevue. “She was always upbeat and always positive.” Danielle Prince of LifeWire, an Eastside program for survivors and those at-risk of domestic violence, says that unfortunately outreach like theirs is often far down the line. “We know people confide in family members, friends and faith-based com-
Northtowne seeking to reactivate The Northtowne Community Club is being re-activated and is seeking new participants. The historic community is located just north of downtown Bellevue between Northeast 12th Street on the south, Clyde Hill at 98th Avenue Northeast on the west, 520 on the north and 405 on the east. Some of the neighborhoods have names although many neighborhood signs are lost. Some of those areas are Spring Hills, Holiday Hill, Apple Valley, Bellewood Farms, Spring Creek, Diamond S Ranch, Manor Hill, Ashwood, Parkside, and Devonshire. The Northtowne Community Club began in 1975. It was active in the '70s, '80s
and '90s. Three of Northtowne's presidents went on to become Bellevue City Council members. Issues the reorganized community club may focus on include workingwith the city for signs detailing the neighborhoods of Historic Northtowne for historic/beautification/ identification reasons, improving pedestrian safety,reviewing hazardous waste removal routes, assisting the Ashwood community in keeping its park green open space, and reviewing school boundaries for the area. Polak told police that he had been alone all of June 17, after swimming in the morning to help his asthma. He attributed his lacerated finger to an injury he had sustained while cutting an avocado. Charging papers say that Polak later asked the police what the sentence for murder was, and

Bellevue man in fatal crash Investigators think a Bellevue man was high on heroin and speeding along Highway 529 in Everett when his truck rolled the evening of June 21, ejecting a passenger. The man, 54 year-old Shawn K. Wilburn of Bellevue, is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide and being involved in a hit-and-run crash. Kyle A. Finch, 26, of Mukilteo, the passenger in the vehicle, was tossed through a window of a Ford Explorer after it struck a guard rail and rolled. He died at the scene. Wilburn, now in the Snohomish County Jail, is being held on $75,000 bail.

Food, fun and fireworks to bring people downtown The Eastside's largest fireworks display will burst over Bellevue on Thursday, July 4 at the city's Downtown Park. The 20-acre park will be filled with a total of 22 food vendors, a variety of musical acts throughout the day along with a family fun zone that will include kids' activities, some free, others with a fee. The culmination of the day begins with a performance by the Bellevue Youth Symphony Orchestra beginning at 9:30 p.m. and then accompanying the fireworks at 10:05. The event is free, as is parking at several locations including City Hall at 450 110th Ave. NE and the Bellevue Collection, which includes Bellevue Square, Bellevue Place and Lincoln Square. A number of Metro buses also serve downtown. A reminder: Pets, alcohol, personal fireworks, weapons of any kind and smoking are not allowed at the park. The event will bring several traffic changes to city streets. Before the fireworks, at approximately 9:45 p.m., some streets near Downtown Park will be closed to vehicle traffic: Northeast Fourth Street, from 100th Avenue to Bellevue Way; and 100th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast First to Northeast Fifth streets. After the fireworks, the following road restrictions will be put in place to help clear traffic leaving downtown: Right turns will be prohibited from 100th Avenue Northeast to Northeast Eighth
Lending a hand Employees from Windermere Real Estate donated their time June 21 to participate in a number of community service projects around the Northwest as part of their annual "Community Service Day." Nearly 50 employees based at the main Bellevue office gathered at the Evergreen Court, an affordable retirement and assisted living facility in Bellevue, to spruce up existing garden beds, clean and repair windows and paint the interior of the building, among other things. The tradition started in 1984 when a handful of Windermere owners and agents came together to make repairs at a Seattle-area elementary school. The company has since donated more than 800,000 hours of community service hours. "The community gives us so much," said Marie Bolster, a Managing Broker with Windermere. While Fido isn't allowed at the park, a new event this year will let leashed dogs and their people participate in a 4K walk. The Four on the Fourth Dog Jog and Walk will start and end at Ashwood Park, next to the Bellevue Library, which will offer free parking. Registration is from 7:30-9 a.m. with the walk from 9 a.m. to noon. There's even a dog costume contest at 10:15 a.m. Those looking for a more intimate venue can head to Lake Boren Park for Newcastle's Fourth of July event, which includes a fireworks show. Food vendors will be on site beginning at 6 p.m. and the band Big Dog Revue will perform from 8-10 p.m. Fireworks start at dark. The park is located at 13058 SE 84th Way.

atch where you click on a computer screen. That’s my advice ever since I tapped the wrong button on Facebook and arranged for my husband to receive daily invitations to meet other women, ones specially chosen to fit his age, interests and lifestyle. Don’t they get that married is part of his lifestyle? It started a few days ago when I accidentally sent an email from his inbox instead of my own. Still corresponding from his email address and thinking I was clicking a link that would remind me of friend’s birthdays, I signed him up for this service. Ann Oxrieder I realized I had a problem when I checked his mail later in the day and found a page of “twenty-seven new search results.” These consisted of mostly well-designed photos of attractive females with their
ages and an offer to click a pink button labeled “Flirt now.” I deleted the invitations and then forgot about the whole incident. However, that evening when we were dining with neighbors, he told them he had just received information in his inbox about a possible mate. He described her as a younger woman... of 61. This was the first time I learned that the service I had enrolled him in was also sending solo shots of women “scientifically matched” to become his next soulmate. Thus far he’s received one a day with his Facebook profile picture pasted onto the same page as theirs. Is this to help him decide whether they would look cute together? I suggested I solve the problem by adding “married for 41 years” to my husband’s Facebook page. He rejected my idea on the grounds that at the rate I clicked the wrong buttons, if I tried to make changes, he’d probably end up with a mail-order bride. The pages he receives warn him that if he doesn’t respond to the particular woman within 24 hours, he’s lost his chance. I’ve unsubscribed him three times, but the women just keep coming. If this doesn’t work, the next thing I know the service will be making suggestions for planning his first date. I’ve assured him that if this happens, I’ll be joining them. Fundraising good for Bellevue's health The grand opening of the Overlake Memorial Hospital on Oct. 16, 1960 was the result of years of energetic planning and fundraising. The need for a large hospital on the Eastside had always existed; no one wanted to be stuck on the wrong side of the lake with a medical emergency. However, it was the post-war population boom that gave Bellevue the resources to fix that problem. The year 1953 saw the foundation of the Overlake Memorial Hospital Association, and for the next seven years, the association and its many auxiliaries used almost every method imaginable (and legal) to gather revenue. There were raffles, benefit ball games, door-to-door collections and cookbook sales. The Bandage Ball, inaugurated by the Fabiola Auxiliary, remains in use to this day. Even children donated money collected from salvaging bottles. Perhaps the most memorable event was a grudge golf match between rival Bellevue landowners Kemper Freeman Sr. and James Ditty. (History is silent regarding the winner.) Heritage Corner is a feature in the Bellevue Reporter. Bellevue youth wins digital arts competition Ten-year-old Andersen Le, a member of the Bellevue Boys & Girls Clubs, won the national Digital Arts Festival competition, beating out contestants from clubs across all 50 states. Anderson won top honors in the 10-12 age group of Game Tech for his video game "Recycle Man." “I like making games more than playing them,” said Anderson. “You can do anything and make Andersen Le them your own. My favorite part is the bazooka that blasts trash and turns it into recycling.” Club staff estimate that Anderson spent a total of 20 hours developing the game. “He would rush into the club every day
over an entire month and go straight to “Recycle Man”, said Brian Hughes, Technology Coordinator. “It was cool to see a kid so focused on a project.” The Digital Arts Festival uses Club Tech as the platform – a suite of technology programs developed by Microsoft specifically for Boys & Girls Clubs. Microsoft has been Boys & Girls Clubs leading technology partnership, which was launched in 2000 with a $100 million contribution to provide software, training and development of a digital literacy curriculum. Other Digital Arts Festival winners from Bellevue included 9-state Pacific Regional Winners: Jacob Frumpkin, 6-9 year olds, Music Tech; Frederik Vork, 6-9 year olds, Photo Tech; and Rassul Karymsakov and Jacob Frumpkin, 6-9 Movie Tech. Strawberry festival fills people with fun and food BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTER
Kids, fingers sticky with strawberry juice and parents as giddy as the younger crowd about a few sunny hours, turned out last weekend for Bellevue’s prelude to summer, the annual Strawberry Festival. The celebration included food vendors, carnival games and a strawberry shortcake eating contest. A vintage car show and full music lineup rounded out the festivities at Crossroads Park. “It’s all about celebrating the past,” said Heather Trescases director of the Eastside Heritage Center, which holds the event, “and about bringing the community together.” You wouldn’t know it from Bellevue’s growing skyline, but years ago the city was a patchwork of strawberry fields, many of them tended by Japanese Ameri-

can farmers, with produce going to the fast-expanding Seattle. In 1925 the first Strawberry Festival was held, funded with just $40 and attracting mostly crowds from across the lake. Despite overcast skies on Sunday, more than 45,000 turned out over the course of the weekend. Attractions included a mini museum of old-fashioned household utensils and farming equipment, kid-friendly projects like time capsules and lots of fresh produce. Cookoff by local chefs raises funds for Hopelink The Bellevue Collection’s top chefs raised raise $9,000 as part of the Chef Battle: Knock Out Summer Hunger. The June 20 event at Eques Restaurant at The Hyatt Regency Bellevue required chefs to use ingredients from a traditional food bank to see who could make the best dish according to a panel of judges. Ingredients included canned meals, canned meat, cereal, dry beans, fruit (canned or fresh), pasta, peanut butter, rice, soup, tomato products and vegetables (canned or fresh). Each dish was judged on presentation, creativity and taste. The competing chefs were Simon Zatyrka (Koral Bar & Kitchen), Jeff Slemaker (Paddy Coyne’s Irish Pub), JJ Ullakko (Pearl Bar & Dining) and Justin Johnson (Ruth’s Chris Steak House). Zatyrka took the title with Carrot "Pappardelle" using carrots, tomatoes, fennel, asparagus, red bell peppers, thyme, basil, dill, parsley, smoked clams, purple potatoes, lemons, canola oil, salt and pepper. End Summer Hunger is Hopelink’s grassroots campaign to help provide low-income families with food for children who receive free or reduced-fee breakfasts and lunches during the school year.

bFit building stronger community in Bellevue BY JOSH SUMAN BELLEVUE REPORTER
For Nick Merrill and his wife Liz StrathyMerrill, fitness and worldwide outreach projects go hand-in-hand. The two Newport Shores residents (Liz is a Newport High School graduate as well) have previously completed endeavors that involved fundraising to construct eight wells in an African village, and last year ran from Vancouver, Wash. to Vancouver, B.C. over five days to construct an orphanage at a schoolhouse, again in Africa. “I always feel like anytime you can give back, you should,” Liz said. “That has always been a part of me.” When she and Nick decided to open a gym in Bellevue, they knew non-profit work would be part of the package there as well and could impact people much closer to home. Inside the gym, longtime personal trainer Nick develops varying workouts that encompass cardio, strength training and core fitness exercises in addition to sport-specific activities. Liz said the hope is for bFit to become a community gathering place for those excited about fitness, regardless of income level. “We want to bridge the gap between oneon-one training and the 50-person classes at the bigger gyms,” she said. More importantly, the two are using the
gym to impact the community through monthly fundraisers and partnerships. The gym partnered with Food Lifeline the first month after opening, collecting donations at its downtown Bellevue location and rewarding clients for participating with free workouts or other incentives at the gym. Eastside Baby Corner, which provides diapers to low-income families in the area, was another partner and Liz said the couple are also in the process of developing a sponsorship program for underprivileged youth who are unable to afford the cost of training. Liz said all of that plays into their idea of the gym as an integrated piece of the community and added the owner of Bungie, the company that developed the Halo franchise, has paid for employees to come to the gym for training sessions. “We’ve always loved helping people through our runs,” Nick said. “This industry is all about helping people reach their goals and that is what has always motivated us.” One of the Bungie employees the gym has been helping is Josh Eash, a 38-yearold Redmond resident who has been with Bungie for less than a year. Eash said he has never worked for a company as invested in the health of its employees, evidenced by the sponsorship to the gym and healthy

USTA Serves, the national charitable foundation of the United States Tennis Association, recently awarded Newport grad Angela Chen a $10,000 scholarship for her work on the court and in the community. Chen, who graduated this year, was part of the 4A girls doubles state title winning duo in 2012 before making the state title match in 4A girls singles this year. Chen did not lose a single set before the state semi-finals and is among the USTA rankings. During her time at Newport, Chen was involved in ASPEN, a program at the school focused on AIDS and HIV research and awareness. The USTA Serves program awarded 58 high school students from around the country Dwight Mosely Scholarships totaling $395,000 this spring. The Dwight Mosley Scholarship is bestowed upon USTA-ranked high school seniors of ethnically-diverse heritages who have excelled academically and participated extensively in an organized community tennis program. This scholarship was

Surrounded by his loving family, Stan passed away at home on January 20, 2013. Born on August 9, 1929 in Port Townsend, WA to Jack and Ruth Miller. Stan had one brother, Ross, who predeceased him in 1988. Stan graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1947. He entered Washington State College where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Upon graduating from WSC (and ROTC) in 1952, he entered the US Air Force. In 1953, he married Barbara Kitlar of Tacoma, WA, upon her graduation from WSC. After serving his two years in the Air Force as First Lieutenant, Stan went to work for the FS Harmon Furniture Manufacturing Co. in Tacoma, WA, where he and Barbara bought their first home and began raising their family. When the FS Harmon Co. ceased manufacturing furniture, Stan went to work for Boeing. Music was an important part of Stan’s life. He played the trumpet in the PTHS and WSC marching bands. Stan also played the bagpipes for 22 years in the original Seattle Bagpipe Band which was formed in 1916, the same year The Boeing Company began. Stan was the Pipe Band president and working in Financial Operations at Boeing at the time both organizations were observing their 50th anniversaries. Stan took an early retirement from Boeing in 1988 and returned to the FS Harmon Co., which had become a commercial lease-holding enterprise, serving as Vice President/Treasurer. He concurrently was Treasurer for the Performing Arts Festival of the Eastside and also served as the Eastside Music Festival Foundation Treasurer for 19 years. Stan is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, and his four children: Evelyn (Max), Cynthia (Bud), Michael and Valerie. He delighted in the lives and growth of grandchildren Meredith, Andrew, Rachel, Alex, and Hannah, and great-grandchildren Anna and Sophie. Stan’s family was his greatest treasure. No funeral services were held at his request.

Bellevue beaches open Saturday A host of Bellevue beaches will open to the public Saturday and will have lifeguards on duty for seven hours out of the day. Chism, Clyde, Enatai and Chesterfield beach parks open Saturday for the summer and all except Chesterfield will have lifeguards on duty from noon - 7 p.m. (Chesterfield’s lifeguard hours are 2-5 p.m. and the beach park will not open in days with inclement weather). Meydenbauer and Newcastle beach parks opened a week ago and have the same lifeguard hours.
Bellevue College camps coming Bellevue College head basketball coach Jeremy Eggers and his staff will host their annual youth basketball camps beginning July 8. The camp is open to boys and girls in grades 3-8 and runs for four hours each day for four days. Camps are July 8-11, August 19-22 and August 26-29. Eggers, who has been the men’s basketball coach at BC for the past decade, also became the women’s team head coach and will be the first NWAACC coach to lead both programs beginning in 2013-14. New revue to debut at Meydenbauer
What’s happening in the world of art
Norwegian painter in Seattle Norway’s most distinguished contemporary landscape painter, Ørnulf Opdahl, will bring more than 30 of his newest works to the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle this month. The exhibition, “Ørnulf Opdahl: Mood Paintings of the North,” will run from June 28 to Sept, 1. Opdahl also will give an artist talk on Saturday, June 29. Opdahl lives and works on the island of Godøy, off the dramatic west coast of Norway, and is inspired by the landscape of the Sunmøre Mountains and numerous fjords. The Nordic Heritage Museum is located at 3014 NW 67th St.
Beginning July 12, the Bellevue Civic Theatre will present the musical revue, “Bobby D and Peggy Lee: Together Again!,” at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. The revue recaptures the final broadcast of “The Bobby Darin Show,” which aired on NBC with Peggy Lee as the only guest - and features Seattle entertainers Bob De Dea and Lindsey Larson. De Dea and Larson - who have previously performed solo tribute concerts to Darin and Lee - will sing many of the songs made famous by the entertainers, as well as recreate some of the duets the friends shared in concerts and nightclubs. Among the Bobby Darin hits included are: “Dream Lover”, “Lazy River”, “Splish Splash”, “If I Were A Carpenter”, “Beyond The Sea” and “Mack The Knife”. Songs made famous by Lee that will be included are: “Big Spender”,
