Hundreds show for OLF forum By Justin Burnett Staff Reporter
More than 200 people turned out for a public meeting concerning Coupeville’s Outlying Field last Wednesday, many who called for the field’s closure. Held at the Recreation Hall on Alexander Street, the building’s 150-person fire capacity was quickly reached and entrances blocked. The 60 or so people unable to get inside the Recreation Hall huddled near the taped-off doorways or peeked in through open windows. The meeting was called by Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard and Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson to identify impacts and suggest mitigation strategies. However, the majority of the crowd made clear their feelings about alternative solutions. “THIS COMMUNITY, Whidbey Island, has outgrown OLF field, close it,” said Frank Scharwat, earning a round of thunderous applause and cheering. A handful of airstrip supporters were peppered throughout the crowd but they by far numbered in the minority. In fact, of the 150 inside the room, a vote showed that 138 want to see Outlying Field closed. Only 12 said the airfield should remain open. Larrie Ford, who retired from the Navy after 20 years and made his home in Coupeville, wants OLF to remain open. Wearing sweatpants with “Navy” emblazoned on them, Ford stood on the steps of the stage and argued against closing the runway. “I’m not going to lecture anyone about doing their homework but I did mine,” Ford said. “Let’s get on with life. I don’t believe in the sound of freedom technically, but freedom is not free.” BY THE time a vote was taken, many who were standing outside the Recreation Hall had left. “I felt terrible about it,” said Conard. Conard and Price Johnson scheduled the meeting thinking the Recreation Hall would provide enough space. Promotion of the event by private advocacy groups, however, swelled attendance. Learning, growing in Greenbank By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter
A small group of students hoping to cultivate a career in agriculture are busy harvesting crops at Greenbank Farm. Four students are attending the organic farm school located on about eight acres of land at what was the one-time largest loganberry producer in the United States. They are busy picking crops that are being sold at the Coupeville Farmers Market that takes place Saturdays behind the Coupeville Public Library. “Everything has been maturing much faster because the weather is so nice,” said Jessica Babcock, director of the organic farm school. In addition to the Coupeville Farmers Market, the students’ produce is also available for purchase at the Star Store in Langley and the Goose in Freeland. They are also seeking subscriptions for a the community supported agriculture program. Babcock highlighted the CSA program as a way to get students to understand the opportunities and challenges of growing a diverse set of crops through the season.
Students are picking turnips and various varieties of greens for sale, such as bok choi, spinach and arugula. The center, which opened several years ago under the auspices of the Northwest Agriculture Business Center, offers particpants classroom instruction along with practical, handson training. Throughout the course of the growing season, students are exposed to every aspect of operating a small farm. They learn agricultural techniques, marketing strategies and business practices throughout the course of a growing season. The Greenbank Farm Management Group took over operations of the training center a couple of years ago. This year’s crop of students come from as far away as Georgia and California. Mitia Dion, who recently lived in Seattle,
came to Seattle because she wanted to expand her horticulture background. “I’ve always loved nature and growing plants,” Dion said while working in the field. she said she hopes to work on an organic farm and she’s interested in teaching children who don’t have access to such places. Fellow student David Hunter decided to join the farm center because he has an interest in farming. He said attending the classes in Greenbank is giving him the confidence needed to start his own farm. He was living in Berkeley, Calif., when he decided to enroll. unemployment rate has been falling slowly, but steadily since reaching a peak level of 10.9 percent in February 2010, Vance-Sherman said. “There are a number of challenges in the current job market,” Vance Sherman said. “The slow recovery has been reflected in longer periods of unemployment and a weakening labor market, as workers take themselves out of the competitive market, and employers are being cautious and cost conscious in their hiring decisions.” Still, LeClaire said there are some things Islanders can do to increase their chances of finding a job appropriate to their skill set. First, make sure your resume is catered to the job you are applying for and make sure your skills are highlighted. Second, prepare for each telephone and in-person interview, making sure that you are sounding and appearing professional. Third, because there are fewer applicants to more complex positions, don’t be intimidated by job listings that are detailed and specific, she said. Lastly, if you do find yourself in a job that you are overqualified for, try to make the best of it, she said. Even while unemployment numbers are falling state and country wide, Whidbey Island residents continue their struggle to find jobs and keep them. There are a couple reasons for this, according to Christina LeClaire, an employment specialist with the state Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. LeClaire said that while new jobs are created, most are lower paying, making it difficult for skilled or higher-level employees to find and keep work. “It has more to do with the job market right now,” LeClaire said. “A lot of people are taking jobs that are below them.” LeClaire said that when people take jobs for which they are over qualified, they are unhappy and are likely to quit, leading to a lower job retention rate. In addition, islanders face the added geographic challenge of finding work. “It is far more difficult on the island (to find work),” she said. “We just don’t have the industries.” And while many North Whidbey residents may seek work off the island in nearby Skagit County, they face that county’s even higher unemployment rate, which soared to 8.2 percent in April. “Everyone is saying that the job market is up (this year), but I have a hard time seeing it until I see a full one-year cycle,” LeClaire said. Annaliese Vance-Sherman, a regional labor specialist with the state Employment Security Department, agreed that Island County’s labor market has been in a holding pattern since falling into the recession. However, she said, “there have been some signs of a growing or at least stabilizing economy.” Since last year, Island County has seen an increase in manufacturing jobs, but a loss in information and financial services jobs, and retail trade jobs. Unemployment rate for Island County fell to 7.4 percent in April. But this time last year, the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent. The
The commissioners for the Port of Coupeville is hoping voters will reduce the length of their terms. In a unanimous decision made during their June 12 monthly commissioner meeting, the three-member board will place a measure on the November general election ballot asking voters to reduce the current six-year term lengths down to four years. The commissioners were consistent in their reasoning for reducing the term lengths. “Six years seems like a long time. Four years looks like a more reasonable amount of time,” commissioner Mike Diamanti said.
He was sworn in as port commissioner as the start of the meeting. He was appointed to the position that was vacated by Laura Blankenship, who resigned months ago. Commissioner Marshall Bronson noted the board of commissioners for the Port of Coupeville tends to draw older people to the office, who may have health concerns and family responsibilities that might factor in running for an office that has a sixyear term. Recent legislation approved by the state opened the door for the port commission to place a ballot measure to reduce the terms. Regardless of the results of the November election, it wouldn’t affect the terms of
the incumbents. While reducing the term lengths might make the Port of Coupeville a more attractive office for people to consider, the six-year terms didn’t seem to hinder candidates vying for seats in the November election. Two seats are up for election this year thanks to Blankenship’s resignation a little more than a year into her term. Both seats are being contested. Soon-to-be retired Port of Coupeville Executive Director Jim Patton and Bill Larsen are vying for the seat being vacated by Benye Weber. Diamanti is running to complete the term for the District 3 seat and he is going up against Richard Bowen.

Washington State University Extension is starting to examine possibilities to establish a presence at the Greenbank Farm. An intern from the state school will spend the next couple of months on Whidbey Island researching ways WSU Extension could become involved at the publicly owned farm. Brandon Nickels is an agriculture economics major at Washington State University and is going into his junior year. He started his internship June 10 and will continue until mid-August. Island County WSU Extension Director Tim Lawrence introduced Nickels during the Port of Coupeville’s June 12 meeting. The port owns and oversees the Greenbank Farm. Lawrence said Nickels’ job is “to turn every stone over at the Greenbank Farm.” Nickels stressed that he is to gather information, but won’t make any decisions concerning the future of the Greenbank Farm and Extension. That would be left to officials at WSU and the Port of Coupeville. Potential possibilities could include partnering with the farm to offer classes, or using some of the pasture for research plots, Nickels said. “I’m going to research

Extension’s interest in the farm comes as officials for the Port of Coupeville are planning the future of the farm that was once the largest loganberry producer in the United States. The Greenbank Farm Management Group’s contract will expire in the near future and port leaders are determining how it should operate once that agreement expires. In the meantime, Nickels is busy familiarizing himself

with the Greenbank Farm operations and meeting people in the community. Port of Coupeville Executive Director Jim Patton said he is providing Nickels with all of the recent planning documents concerning the Greenbank Farm. He said he provided Nickels with the conserve ration easement, various farm plans and more. He noted that the community involvement at the farm is rather inspirational. He hopes to continue to meet with folks in the area to discuss their thoughts and

Lots of events happening this weekend in town

It’s going to be a busy weekend in Coupeville. Starting 9 a.m. Saturday is the Coupeville Lion Club’s annual garage sale at Coupeville Elementary. There are so many items for sale, the club takes more than a week
to set everything up. While working on a preview story for the event, I got to see one of the barns the club uses for storage. It was filled to the brim with treasures of all shapes and sizes. And this was only ONE of the barns. Club members collect items year round and fill four barns full of items. The sale is the club’s largest fundraiser of the year and nets an average of $30,000 to $40,000 each year. And the best part — all of those funds go back into our community through the Lions’ charitable projects. I’ve had personal experiences working directly with several different Lions Clubs and I can tell you they all do amazing work in the community. Remember that year round when you’re cleaning house. Lions will even come pick items up for you. So get in line early and hope you find that hidden treasure. If you can’t wait, the Lions hold a special preview noon to 6 p.m. Friday. After all the shopping, you’re more than likely going to work up an appetite. Well, you’re in luck! United Methodist Church is hosting its annual strawberry social 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For $7 enjoy waffles, shortcake or a sundae. Half orders are $5. All proceeds go to help the church’s missionaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo. And while you’re over there, walk a few blocks and check out the Coupeville Farmer’s Market. Take home some of those strawberries for your own strawberry social. I stopped by last weekend and picked some up for myself. Vote to move OLF reveal selfishness Editor, This letter is in response to the Outlying Field meeting June 19 at the Recreation Hall in Coupeville. It is interesting to note that the meeting room was at capacity and that the primary people allowed were Central Whidbey residents. This group of Central Whidbey resident’s main complaint was that the noise was unhealthy. And what was the solution of the majority of them? To move the operations to the air base in Oak Harbor. My wife and I live in the north end of Whidbey Island and get our fair share of Navy air traffic. We understood what we were getting into when we purchased our property in 2004. But now the solution for the central Whidbey residents is to double or triple the air traffic in North Whidbey? It seems to me that they are only concerned with themselves and their home values than they are the health of residents of Whidbey Island. Do they not believe children also live on the north end of Whidbey Island too? My support is for the status quo. I am dead set against having the Navy conduct all of its touch-and-go operations from the Ault Field runways. If the elected officials and Navy cave
to these few people in Central Whidbey at the expense of us at the north end, I can only say that my vote will not go to any of the decision makers who allow that to happen. I will become as loud and squeaky as the Central Whidbey folks and start calling for closure of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. I did not purchase my home with the thought that touch-and-go traffic would increase two- or threefold. Because of to selfish nature of these Central Whidbey residents, I think my dollars spent in the local economy in the future will be kept north of Coupeville.

physical and mental harm in order to be protected. Any amount of harm is the opposite of protection, and having “a little hearing loss” is like being “a little pregnant.” With the advent of the louder Growlers, extended practice hours, and wider flight patterns, a much larger percentage of the population is in harm’s way, and the potential harm is much more serious than it was before. This includes harm to children’s and adults’ hearing, harm to children’s classroom learning, and debilitating sleep deprivation for working adults. Whidbey Island has not outgrown the Naval Air Station; it has dramatically upped the ante and outgrown Whidbey Island. The sound of freedom has become the sound of abuse, the sound of a mutually beneficial social compact suddenly breaking and becoming lopsided in favor of one party at the expense of the other. Serve and protect has become dictate and don’t care. The military mission of the base is essential to America, but it does not have to be located here. The much more sensible place for these much louder jets to be based and to practice? The vast, desolate scablands of Eastern Washington. I’m sure Doc Hastings and Cathy McMorris Rogers would welcome them with open arms.

Work continues following town OLF meeting
Nancy Conard Town Talk Many thanks to those who attended the community forum last week to share concerns about the Growlers’ carrier landing practice at Outlying Field. I regret there was not room for everyone in the building, and thank those who participated from the parking lot. The evening confirmed for me, again, that we live in a great community, where people of varying opinions can meet, exchange views, and maintain a civil dialogue. It also made me a member of the Valerie Reuther fan club—she did a fabulous job facilitating the meeting. Commissioner Helen Price Johnson and I both feel we received good, and new, input regarding the impacts our constituents are experiencing as well as suggestions for possible mitigations at a local level. It is clear that there is a change in operations that is causing real problems for our friends and neighbors. Attendees at the meeting were given at opportunity to complete a written survey. If you were unable to attend the forum and would like to complete a survey, they are available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday at Coupeville Town Hall, at www.townofcoupeville.org or by contacting me at mayor@ townofcoupeville.org The survey responses and the input provided by the table groups will be tabulated over the next 2-3 weeks. We are also reaching out to other entities, such as the school and hospital, as a result of some of the concerns expressed at the meeting, to get a better understanding of any challenges they may be experiencing. We are in the process of scheduling our next meetings with local base leadership and with the regional naval leadership in July.
We were very happy to have representatives for Congressman Rick Larson and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell present at the meeting. They have reached out to us to schedule follow up meetings, and we are eager to seek their help and support. As we stated at the meeting, our focus at this time is to work with local base leadership and try to develop operational changes that may improve the situation. We recognize that the majority opinion expressed by those present at the meeting was to see OLF closed. As I said at the meeting, I believe that decision will be made at a much higher level. Others are leading that effort, and in the meantime, Commissioner Price Johnson and I will continue to build relationships with the local naval officials who have control over the local operations and work for improvements at that level. Some changes that we might discuss is the number of days per week that flights occur, or the actual hours flown per day, or changes in flight pattern to relieve the intensity of multiple days of flying. I will continue to provide progress reports to the Town Council at their regular meetings. Flea market starts at Greenbank Farm Shoppers will enjoy perusing a selection of handmade crafts and vintage items when they shop Sundays at Greenbank Farm. The bus service connecting three counties in the area has been gaining popularity in recent years and will continue. The state legislature provided funding that will fund the Tri County connector and Everett Connector, which travel between Oak Harbor, Mount Vernon, Camano Island and Everett. Island Transit officials had been worried that funding would be eliminated for the service that
years. It had been a farmers market, but that slowed after markets in Coupeville and Bayview, both of which take place a day earlier, became successful. Greenbank’s Sunday market has become slower. If the funding hadn’t been approved, then the service would have been canceled at the end of the month. “We’re grateful for what we have,” Island Transit executive director Martha Rose said. She said the legislature allocated $818,000 to fund for one year the connector route between Camano Island Everett. The legislature also allocated $2.3 million for two years to fund the connector routes between Oak Harbor, Mount Vernon and
Bellingham. The transit entities in Island, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties will divy up the state funding. Both connector services started in 2006 with 55,000 Island Transit riders using the Tri-County Connector between Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon and 8,100 riders using the Everett Connector between Camano Island and Everett. Since its initial year, ridership on the connector routes have steadily increased. In 2012, 147,000 Island Transit riders used the
Tri-Connector and 45,500 riders used the Everett Connector, according to information provided by Island Transit. While transportation officials are grateful for the state funding, Rose noted that the funding was based on 2005, and doesn’t keep up with current costs. Transit officials involved with the connector service have been meeting to figure out ways to stretch funding. Rose added that the funding for the Everett Connector lasts for one year and staff will have to work to resolve the gap.

Outdoor dining proposal sparks discussion with business owners

Cecil M. “Cec” Monson
Cecil Martin “Cec” Monson, age 103, of Bush Point, died at Careage of Whidbey on June 11, 2013. Cec was best known on Whidbey Island for his monthly columns, “Do You Remember,” which appeared as part of the Senior News’ monthly newspaper until 2008. He was also known to be an eager dance partner at the Bayview Senior Center’s Friday Fun Band dances and summer Concerts on the Cove. Cec was born on a farm near Wiota, Wisconsin on October 19, 1909 to Martin and Clara (Brenum) Monson. He was a proud graduate of The University of Wisconsin, Madison. In 1937, Cec married his lifelong sweetheart, Alyce Burmeister, and settled in Wauwatosa, Wis. Cec’s and Alyce’s 72 love-filled years of marriage were blessed with one son (John) and two daughters (Mary Alice and Martha). Cec worked as an accountant for Wisconsin Electric Power Company from 1936 until retiring in 1973 as chief accountant of the company. After retirement, he and Alyce moved to Bush Point on Whidbey Island after falling in love with the island during a visit. With a life that spanned the 20th Century and beyond, Cec lived through and bore witness to amazing transformations in life as he knew it. He traveled all 50 states and was a keen observer of life. He recorded his life and the times in which he lived in three volumes, My Life as I Saw It; Essays About Practically Everything; and Do You Remember. In addition to being an avid writer and explorer, Cec’s life was filled with service. He was most proud of his role in developing the Senior Services Foundation, which supported the growth of Senior Services of Whidbey Island. He was active in the Boy Scouts and Explorers, served as an adult literacy volunteer, volunteered as treasurer of many charitable organizations, and, in his final years, participated in the Boston University Medical School’s Centenarian Research Project. Cec was also active in the Coupeville United Methodist Church and the Coupeville Lions Club, and the United Methodist churches to which he belonged in Milwaukee and Wauwatosa.

Monson In his last years of life, Cec shared his home, life and stories with three generations of Monson women: his daughter and loving caregiver, Mary Alice Kois; his granddaughter, Lisa Kois; and his great granddaughter, Aaliyah Kois Jacob. Cec and Aaliyah (age 7) shared a special bond, a passion for storytelling and a love of dessert. Cec was preceded in death by his wife, Alyce Monson, his sister, Lucile Bisegger, and his brother, Paul Monson, both of rural Wisconsin. He is survived by son John (Lillian) of Castle Rock, Colo.; daughters Mary Alice Kois of Bush Point, and Martha (Vern) Olsen of Coupeville. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Paul (Linda, deceased) Monson of Colorado, Anita (Dave) Steele of Tennessee, and Kari Monson of Colorado; Randi (Jim) Hanvey of New York and Lisa Kois of Washington; Dori (Shawn) Hoose of California and Jesse (Kim) Olsen of Washington; and eleven great grandchildren, Abby, Hannah and David Monson; Natalie Turner, Mikal, Grace, Matthew and Joseph Steele; Will and Jack Hanvey, and Aaliyah Kois Jacob. One grandchild, Nels Arne Olsen, died in infancy. A community celebration of the lives of Cecil and Alyce Monson will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at the South Whidbey Senior Center. A proposal by a downtown business to encroach on public parking for outdoor dining has other area businesses talking. Recently a representative from Front Street Grill came to Coupeville Town Council and shared an idea to use the two parking spots in front of the business for outdoor dining. A platform would be built to make the area level as well as fencing to create a perimeter. The business, located on Front Street, would only offer outdoor dining during the summer months, and management hoped to start

Bubba Flame Broiled Burger brings the nationwide trend of food trucks to Whidbey Island. Inspired by the TV show “Great Food Truck Race,” a reality show featuring competing food trucks, Heather and Greg Koch have found success with their own food truck challenge — a new business. “We have the burgers you know, but better,” Heather Koch said. “Our burgers are made with love.” The formidable burgers feature five handmade sauces, flame broiled burgers and salt and pepper potato chips on the side. Heather recommends starting with the “Loaded Burger” which features a flame broiled burger, cheddar cheese, pepper bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onion on a bun with her secret “Bubba Burger Sauce.” Her favorite is also the one she spent the most time creating, the “Greek Burger,” which features a flame broiled beef patty, feta, swiss cheese, red onion, kalamata olives and tomato

Heather said the truck business is entirely different from the restaurant business because of the size. The storage and prep area are in the same space in the food truck and employees have their own small spots they have to navigate through. The truck is licensed and permitted, she said. “It’s a natural fit for Heather and our community,” Greg said. “The community has opened their arms for us.” Word has spread quickly. Heather said they are often slammed during lunch hours, which is fine. “If you guys keep coming, so will we,” she said. Heather said one of her favorite parts of running the food truck is the variety of people eating her burgers. “I love seeing people in ties, painters and teenagers all next to each other, packed in our picnic tables,” she said. Heather said the opening of her business and the success it has received has been a whirlwind that she can’t believe. “I don’t watch the TV show anymore, I live it,” she said. Coupeville graduates continue in collegiate athletics By Jim Waller Staff Reporter
Some Coupeville High School athletes continue to shine after graduating from CHS. Here’s a look at how some ex-Wolves fared in collegiate sports this spring.
Track
Kyle King, after competing for the Eastern Washington University track team for three seasons, transferred to the University of Oklahoma for his final year of eligibility. At the Big 12 Conference championship meet May 3-5, he placed 11th in the 10,000 (30:06.31) and 17th in the 5,000 (14:50.2). During the season he ran the 3,000 in 8:27.59, the second-best time by any Sooner. King’s sophomore brother, Tyler, runs for the University of Washington. He posted the Huskies’ top times in the 3,000 (8:15.97) and 5,000 (14:00.58) and third-best in the 1,500 (3:48.17) this spring. Tyler King placed 29th
in the 5,000 (15:03.54) in the Pac-12 championships May 11-12 in Los Angeles, then improved to 26th (14:30.99) at the NCAA West Preliminary

Alexis Trumbull is a freshman outfielder for the Skagit Valley College softball team. Trumbull played in 27 games for the Cardinals (7-32), hitting .224 (15-67) with a double, six runs, two

A Coupeville woman took advantage of a special filing period to file for a spot on the Coupeville School Board. Venessa Matros filed in early June to run for the seat being vacated by Jeff Tasoff, who decided not to run for reelection. “I figured it is a great time to get involved,” Matros, who has a daughter attending the high school and a second daughter set to start attending Coupeville schools in 2016. She had been thinking about getting involved and then decided to file when she noticed the vacancy on
the school board. Matros will run unopposed in November. Matros is married and works as a case manager for the Housing Authority of Island County. Filing week took place in mid-May. When nobody www.nw-ads.com filed for Tasoff’s seat on the school board, the Island County Auditor’s Office scheduled a three-day special filing period for the vacant school board seat along with any other vacant seat up for election in November. A vacancy remains on the Whidbey General Hospital Board.
State releases study on Mukilteo Ferry Terminal The 60-year-old Mukilteo ferry terminal is one step closer to replacement with the release of a final environmental impact statement. “We’ve reached a major milestone,” said David Moseley, assistant secretary for the Washington State Department of Transportation, Ferries Division. “I want to thank all of the community members, tribes and agencies that reviewed and commented on the EIS to ensure all potential environmental impacts were addressed.” The Mukilteo terminal is the state’s busiest terminal, serving nearly 4 million passengers last year. But it is vulnerable to earthquake and in need of major repairs to continue safe, reliable ferry service between Mukilteo and Clinton. The environmental

OLF: Hundreds show for meeting to discuss solutions for jet noise From page 1 By the time Conard and Price Johnson realized just how many people planned to attend, it was too late to change the location, Conard said. To address the limited space, priority seating was given to Central Whidbey residents. THE PREFERENTIAL seating was a source of grumbling from some who were denied access. One the Navy’s most outspoken supporters, Sedro-Woolley resident Joe Kunzler, recorded the event through an open window. It was only at the urging of the crowd that a Whidbey News-Times reporter, who showed up 30 minutes early, was allowed into the hall to cover the meeting. While many of those inside the building called for shutting down the airfield, the purpose of the meeting was to identify other solutions, Conard said. of about 10, attendees wrote how jet noise is affecting them. A speaker from each group read the greatest impacts to the rest of the room. Kelly Keilwitz cited the effect on children at the nearby ballfields at Rhododendron Park. Glenda Cantrell repeated a story from a teacher who talked about impacts on student learning. Maryon Attwood talked about the negative consequences on business and having to sleep with ear protection. NOISE STUDIES conducted by professionals at Atwood’s studio registered noise levels of up to 82 decibels inside her sound-proofed home, claimed Attwood, and up to 113 decibels outside. Another woman said young farmers are rethinking plans to spend their lives on Central Whidbey. Vivian Rodgers Decker, the wife of a Navy man with VAQ-129, was applauded when she spoke out against the airfield and voiced hopes for a retirement with less jet noise. A retired audiologist talked about health impacts and having recorded noise level readings of up to 128 decibels and fourth generation Central Whidbey farmer Georgie Smith discussed the consequences of noise on Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve. Finally, Larry Richards claimed noise has not only increased, but there appears to be a change in flight paths,

MEETING ATTENDEES were asked to vote on mitigation strategies they would prefer to see implemented. Many reiterated their position that the only option is to close OLF Coupeville, but when pressed by organizers, voted on a list of alternatives. The most popular, with 68 votes, was to move all touchand-go operations to Oak Harbor. The second highest priority, 47 votes, was to reduce operations to two days a week.
While the meeting lasted only about 90 minutes, the debate continued into the next day with many airfield supporters and critics arguing their positions on social media websites, including the Whidbey News-Times website and Facebook page. KUNZLER DESCRIBED the meeting as “one-sided,” but somewhat eye-opening in that the landing strip’s impact is more widespread than he initially perceived. “It’s more than just a few noisemakers,” Kunzler said. “There’s about a hundred or
so and we’re going to have to deal with this and it’s going to be a long haul.” His view on OLF Coupeville, however, remains unchanged. Kunzler said the airfield is needed and must remain intact, though “cost effective mitigation” is warranted. KUNZLER CALLED on the Navy to hold its own community forum. It would be an opportunity for base leaders to explain directly the necessity of the airfield and address other issues as well. “The Navy needs to com-

Asked how the Navy will respond to the anti-airfield sentiment expressed at the meeting, Conard said, “I certainly think it will get their attention.”
