A group is exploring whether the 500-acre Misty Isle Farm could be purchased for farmland preservation and transformed into a multi-use site. “There is no other piece of land on the island with so many assets,” said Tom Dean, who heads the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust and is leading the effort. “This is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity.” For the past six months, Dean and several other high-profile islanders, as well as representatives from King County and PCC Farmland Trust — a nonprofit that works to preserve threatened farmland — have been meeting regularly and working to determine whether the massive estate once owned by the late Tom Stewart could not only be purchased and protected, but one day hold farms and other resources or amenities that would benefit Vashon. While the property near Paradise Valley hasn’t been on the market in years, committee members say they believe that if a nonprofit were to fundraise millions of dollars for the

The two have organized a committee that is considering whether the property can be purchased and preserved. ambitious project, it may be able to negotiate a buy. “We all came to the conclusion that yes, we think there’s a good idea here, and a window of opportunity,” Dean said. The exploratory committee, which members say is still in the early stages of research, will now look to develop a rough business plan for the site, gather more community feedback and have an appraisal done on the property. Should they craft a plan that pencils out, Dean said, they’ll begin approaching potential donors to gauge interest in funding such an
endeavor. “I have vetted this idea with leaders in the community, and I have gotten universal excitement around it,” Dean said. “We’re trying to learn as much as we can and piece together something that makes sense.” Dean estimates that a property appraisal alone will cost up to $70,000, funds he called at-risk seed money. Sheriff’s office investigates a string of residential burglaries on Vashon Several women report having jewelry stolen under similar circumstances By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
One day this spring, when Linda Bianchi went to put away a pearl earring she’d recently had repaired, she found that some of her jewelry was missing. She also found, in the coming weeks, that many island women have surprisingly similar stories. The King County Sheriff’s Office is now
investigating the apparent string of residential burglaries. Since Bianchi reported the theft, three other women have contacted the sheriff’s office because they, too, recently discovered jewelry missing, according to Sgt. Cindi West, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. After Bianchi’s story circulated, five women contacted her with their own stories of stolen jewelry, she said, including some who have not reported their losses to police. The spate of thefts extends beyond jewelry and includes a valuable guitar recently taken from a home near Gold Beach and a
rare coin collection and cash that had been tucked away in a jewelry box in a home off Cove Road. Earlier this month, a woman in Burton arrived home to find a strange vehicle in her driveway and encountered a man walking out of her house. She expects he is a suspect in the thefts, she said. Adding to the situation’s twists and turns, this month a sheriff’s deputy, acting on a tip that some of the stolen items might be on the roof of Joy’s Cleaners, climbed up, fell through the roof and was injured. He is expected to return to work soon, West said. According to Bianchi, all the victims she has talked with said there was no sign of
forced entry at their homes and that nothing was disturbed. “You have no idea anyone’s been in your home,” she said. West confirmed that the lack of telltale clues in the reported cases and noted that more islanders may have had items stolen but may not have noticed them missing yet. She suggested islanders take stock of their possessions, and if anything is missing, contact authorities. “They should absolutely report it,” she said. SEE BURGLARIES, 16

Classes will start a half-hour later on professional development days at the Vashon School District next year. Superintendent Michael Soltman said that extending late-start mornings from two hours to two-and-a-half hours on 15 professional development days next school year isn’t ideal but is necessary to help teachers implement a slate of new state requirements. “As educators, we all regret and resent that we have no choice but to make a trade-off between student contact time and professional development for our teachers,� Soltman said. The district originally scheduled 16 three-hour late-start days next school year, and a calendar approved by the school board and posted on the district website listed the change. But when district officials looked closer at the high school’s new sixperiod schedule, the three-hour late start seemed to shorten classes too much and didn’t line up well with bus and ferry schedules, Soltman said. He also heard from two district parents concerned about cutting further into instructional time. “In the end, it really didn’t make sense to do it,� he said. The late-start extension on Vashon came just weeks before the state Superintendent of Public Instruction publicly criticized Washington schools’ increasing use of halfdays on school calendars. Randy Dorn, who appeared on KING5 news, said half-days were a burden on parents and took away

from classroom instruction time and he would push for legislation to limit them. Soltman, however, called Dorn’s comments unfair. Over the past several years, the state has cut funding for teacher inservice days, he said, forcing districts to incorporate professional development time into regular school days, as late-start or early-release days still count toward the 180 school days required by the state. Faculty work time will be even more vital next year, Soltman said, as teachers in all grade levels will be adjusting their curriculum to meet new state standards and will also be learning and completing a new statewide teacher evaluation program. While some work can be done during summer faculty development days paid for by local levy funds, more professional development during the school year is needed, Soltman said, and the state simply isn’t funding it. “I find it to be extremely disingenuous on (Dorn’s) part and a response to pressure from the press without any sense of the reality of the situation that in fact his agency has helped create,� Soltman said. Jenny Granum, a math teacher at McMurray Middle School and the outgoing president of Vashon teacher’s union, agreed that no teacher wanted to lose instructional time next year, but new standards called for additional teacher work time. “I know on late-start days, when I only have 30 minutes with my students, it’s next to impossible to get a lesson accomplished in that time,� she said. “No one wants to cut contact time with their students. It’s a tough situation.�

Another era on Vashon comes back to life over social media By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD Staff Writer

This 1940s-era photo helped spur the creation of a Facebook page devoted to Vashon’s past. stretches back to 1877, when his great-great grandparents moved to the island. Months later, his great-great-great grandfather moved here to join his son and his family. Sherman, a sixth-generation islander, now lives on a piece of the family’s original homestead property, located near Quartermaster Harbor. Sherman and Brenno launched the page three years ago, after Sherman posted a 1940sera photo of a Brenno’s Service tow truck on his personal Facebook page. The photo caught Brenno’s attention, and after a brainstorming session between the two, Sherman was spurred to sit down and create the Facebook group. “After that, the members just started flying

A treasure trove of old photos has been making its way out of dusty photo albums and onto the internet, filling a Facebook page aimed at celebrating Vashon’s past. The Facebook group, named Old Vashon Pictures & Stories, has garnered more than 2,000 members and become the go-to repository for many historical photographs that otherwise might never have seen the light of day. And as the group’s name suggests, the site also serves as a place where a rich, if somewhat random, oral history of life on the island is being recorded on the fly. The page is the creation of two islanders, Brian Brenno and Jim Sherman, whose families have deep roots on Vashon. Both men said they have been delighted and surprised by the response to the Facebook site, which now boasts more than 1,700 photographs, documents and videos. “I wouldn’t have ever thought it would get that much attention,� said Sherman. “People really connect with it,� said Brenno. “It’s about stories — people who lived here and the things they did.� The two men are well qualified to be the caretakers of a page dedicated to Vashon’s past. Brenno, 54, is a fourth-generation Islander, the great-grandson of two Norwegian immigrants who landed on Vashon’s shores in 1918. And Sherman, 47, has a family history that

Old photos belonging to the Brenno family are now a staple of the Facebook site, and Sherman has also contributed steadily to it, digging through his family’s collection of memorabilia that dates back to the dawn of photography. “My family never threw anything away,� Sherman said. “There are pictures in my family from the 1880s.� Sherman credits his grandfather, Gene Sherman, who is now 94 and has lived on Vashon his entire life, with helping him tell the stories behind many of the family’s photos. “His memory is incredible, and I can get
him to answer questions and get stuff corrected,� Sherman said. Sherman says that one of his goals with the site is to “get the story straight behind the pictures, to really get it written down and recorded for future generations.� And indeed, a trip to the Facebook page, on any given day, provides snapshots of the island that are like micro-exhibits in a history museum. One member recently posted photographs of Vashon-Maury veterans who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. Another post shows a photo of Vashon Bowl, an island establishment that produced two championship professional bowlers. There are photos of The Little House when it was red, not yellow, and a long thread recalling the 1970s-era glory of the building next door to The Little House, the Spinnaker Restaurant. Other photos — some posted by site regulars that include historian Bruce Haulman and long-time islanders Stan Elleflot and Rueben Arnot — skip back and forth between decades, forming a crazy quilt of impressions of Vashon through the years. But for Brenno, one theme is a constant — the site provides a record of a time he defines as being “when Vashon was Vashon� — before larger ferry boats transformed the island from a rural community to one with a commuter culture. “There is this nostalgia for the past that is key in this whole thing,� he said.

Local psychiatrist will speak on forgiveness and healing
After 25 years serving the island, Joy’s Village Cleaners will close its doors Friday. Joy Humphreys owned the cleaners and laundromat with her husband George until he died last year, and now, she said, it is time to move on. “I decided I needed to retire,” she said last week. “I’m getting too old to do it by myself. Indeed, Humphreys is 83, and the business had become too much, she told The Beachcomber earlier this year. Her husband had been an electrician and an accountant, but when he died, all of the work of the business fell to her, she said, including trying to keep the aging equipment running and contending with unsavory characters that sometimes frequent the business. She put the building up for sale a few months ago, and decided to close it this month. She had retirement plans with her husband, she said, but now she’ll have to create new ones. “I will plant flowers or something,” she said. Many have relied on Joy’s, the island’s only laundromat, for dry cleaning and the use of washers and driers. Now, some will have to

Dr. Barry Grosskopf will offer the presentation, titled Honoring Your Parents, Healing Yourself: The Liberating Potential of Compassion through Understanding. Grosskopf, who is the president of the board of directors at Vashon Community Care, has worked for nearly 40 years in the field, he said, and has frequently seen how emotional injuries are passed along. “The wounds that we bear that came to us as children and adolescents can have repercussions over generations,” he said. Stress is a burden that affects people physically and psychologically, including, to some extent, altering people’s DNA, he said.

people will do now.” The good news for islanders, according to the building’s listing agent, Denise Katz of Windermere, is that several people have expressed interest in the building, though a buyer may establish a business other than a laundromat there. Regardless, she expect activity soon. “I think that we will see a sale sometime this summer,” she said.

Grosskopf was recently named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest ranking a member of the association can receive. A Vashon resident since 1999, Grosskopf was born in a refugee camp in Poland and moved to the United States when he was 5. Until he moved to Vashon, he said, he never felt entirely at home. “I want to give back to the community,” he said. Misty Isle idea is ambitious, but movers are involved Tom Stewart, the wealthy businessman and staunch Republican who died in 2010, is arguably a legend on Vashon. While living on the island, Stewart both wowed islanders with his massive estate and generous giving and rubbed some wrong with his opulent lifestyle and run-ins with the law. Just as Stewart and his 500-acre estate — which includes landscaped gardens, a putting green, riding arena, airstrip and helipad — seemed too grand for Vashon, thoughts of a nonprofit now purchasing it at first glance seem too far-fetched to be realistic. A group headed by land trust director Tom Dean has ambitious ideas for the property, an ecologically important site and the last property of that size on Vashon that could be purchased for protection. Members are talking of not only farming the place, but doing conservation projects at the creek there, perhaps establishing rentals and a restaurant, providing education and jobs, composting and maybe even adding worker housing in the mix. We would likely discredit their thoughts as pipe dreams if not for those who are involved in the brainstorming. Dean is a well-respected conservationist who has headed significant projects before and helped bring about the county’s purchase of the former Glacier property. Merrilee Runyan is another solid community activist who, as president of the Vashon Islander Growers Association, has her finger on the pulse of Vashon farming. Other well-respected names are involved, suggesting this is a group of people that wouldn’t waste their valuable time mulling over a project that had no chance of taking off. What’s more, government and nonprofit agencies with the resources to help make such a large project happen are already sitting with them at the drawing board. Christie True, the director of the county Department of Natural Resources and Parks who happens to live on Vashon, says purchasing Misty Isle isn’t a “crazy idea.” In fact, she said, it’s just the kind of project the county likes to see happen. We’re still skeptical, and there are still many unanswered questions. Who would manage such a site, and what farmers would eventually set up shop there? Would Stewart’s family and company really sell, and for how much? Is this truly a cause the Vashon community would support, and could millions be raised for it? Those involved readily admit they don’t have all the answers yet, and maybe when they get them they’ll find they don’t have a practical path. Until then, we’ll listen to this group and keep an open mind. The whole island would benefit from seeing this massive property protected, and after all, we, too, would rather see yurts there than mansions.
Community activism on Vashon and Maury Islands was the first social interaction my husband and I encountered when we moved here in 2000. We bought the neighborhood’s “haunted house,” a 1908 Craftsman that had fallen into disrepair from neglect and deterioration. Dockton residents came to welcome us and to help. They were delighted to find that we had restored a historic home in Snohomish and that we planned to do the same here. They brought plants for a garden where there were none, a cement mixer for sidewalks and foundation work, recommendations for a new roof, landscape equipment and much more. The cause was to improve the neighborhood and restore a historic home that reflected the colorful history in this waterfront community that was once the center of maritime industry in the region. Last Thursday, I attended a King County Parks program on community partnerships. The Friends of Dockton Park, the Vashon Forest Stewards and the Friends of Maury Island Marine Park were recognized among 20 other community activism groups in King County who saw a problem, organized work parties and with county grants and private donations were able to accomplish more in less time than a slow-moving bureaucracy with limited resources and staff. Community activism is nothing new. It has an 8,000-year history where tribal healers, philosophers, poets and leaders organized for interdependence and collaborated for the common good. According to Paul Hawken, the author of “Blessed Unrest,” there are over one million groups in the world today working toward ecological sustainability and social justice. Our level of maturity is mea-
COMMUNITY By ANITA HALSTEAD sured by how much we give to others in terms of energy, time, skills and talent, and Vashon residents have had plenty of that in creating the Vashon Health Center, Granny’s Attic, the food bank, Vashon Household, Preserve Our Islands and the land trust, to name a few. Successful activists have some common characteristics. They see the need for change and are driven by a commitment to make a difference. They are visionary, dedicated and persistent. They celebrate the small successes as they move toward their goal and are not daunted by the losses, internal dissent or discrimination. They are not self-serving. “Activism derives power from the ability to educate, raise awareness and make people passionate about an issue,” says Professor Anthony Western in “How to Re-Imagine the world.” This was evident in the 1970s when Dorothy Johnson and her friends, concerned about the lack of health services on the island, held a rummage sale to pay for the house they rented in Burton for a rotating pair of nurse practitioners and a reception/consultation room for patients in the era of Warren Magnuson. Successful community activism does not discriminate based on gender, age or race. A 10-year-old in the slums of Calcutta can be just as successful at motivating people to change and embrace new ideas

Incident shows we have a ways to go We moved to this island in the hope of providing our children better educational opportunities. We moved here with eyes wide open, knowing there is not much racial diversity, believing we would find a place for our multi-racial family to fit in. For the most part, this has been true. However, when I read about an African American postal worker report-
edly being harassed by police simply because he was parked in a public parking lot and people responded saying “I just can’t believe this could happen here,” I wanted to scream “Wake up people!” We do not live in a post-racial society, even on our little island. As the white mother of four children of color, we have had conversations with principals of all three of the schools regarding concerns about racism our children have experienced in the classroom.

as a group of retired professionals who have taken on the Friends of Mukai project. With a growing membership of 180, this grassroots effort to restore a historical farm and garden has a clear vision of what needs to be done. The executive committee of Friends of Mukai, is a prime example of effective activism. Glenda Pearson, Yvonne Kuperberg, Helen Meeker, Rayna Holtz and Ellen Kritzman are seasoned professionals who have long been active in community issues. They are respected for their integrity, goodwill, dedication and thoughtful research. They are detail oriented with a passion to make a difference. Keeping calm in the eye of a brewing storm has served them well as they continue to push the Mukai cause, which is to restore the farm and garden designed by BD, Kuni and Masa Mukai nearly 100 years ago. They have gone beyond volunteering and have pursued legal action to right what they consider a wrong. The committees they have formed for this effort are made up of like-minded individuals who see what is best for the Mukai project rather than what is best for the individual. This sustained activism leads to progress not only for the farm and garden, but for the benefit of all island residents and beyond. The fundamental act underlying successful community activism is doing. As Margaret Mead’s often-quoted comment makes clear: “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Second grade proves to be a good time to experiment with hair

In most cases, the conversations led to positive outcomes. However, after reading a story like this, I think of my children and that one day my sons will be grown black men who will face the same fears that caused the police to be called because a black man was sitting in his car. These are my children, children many of you know, and if we can’t effectively address matters of race on this little island now, how can we hope to address them in the larger country ever? It is time we wake up! Vashon is becoming more racially diverse, and it is incumbent upon us to get ahead of the conversation by embracing racial diversity, having honest conversations about it and acknowledging our biases and privilege. If we don’t embrace change and hide our heads in the sand, we allow history to repeat itself: “Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.” — Jill Dziko
Our youngest boy got a Mohawk. To say that he “got” a Mohawk, like it fell from the sky and landed neatly on his head, or that it arrived one morning in the mail, is not completely correct. I gave him the Mohawk. I’ve given our kids several unfortunate haircuts, especially when the clippers have become dull and yank out whole stands of hair, or itchy shards of hair work their way into a kid’s underwear. How well my homemade haircuts turn out is directly correlated to the length of time that the kids will sit still for them. It’s not very long; the haircuts aren’t very good. Our youngest boy had been asking me to give him a Mohawk for almost a year. I tried to convince him that a neatly trimmed buzz-cut might be more useful. With a nice buzz-cut he might be able to be seen in public without feeling like he needed to wear a ball cap. The Mohawk might leave him open to taunts and cruel playground ridicule. My wife Maria is not fond of buzz-cuts or Mohawks; perhaps they make her think of ringworm, but regardless, she refused to discuss them. Our youngest son is persistent, tenacious, forgetful. One night at the supper table, with a wave of a weary hand, Maria surrendered.

FAMILY LIFE By KEVIN POTTINGER One point in the trilateral peace accord stipulated that there would be no Mohawking before First Communion. She might have secretly hoped that a thunderbolt of practical reason might smite him at First Communion before he submitted to the clipper’s mechanical maw, but more likely she calculated that the beginning of summer might be the perfect time to float a trial Mohawk. First Communion photos for Grandma would already be taken, and next year’s school pictures would still be several weeks away, ensuring that memories of the summer Mohawk would eventually flicker and fade. In front of the bathroom mirror with a damp towel wrapped around his neck and the clippers chattering in his ear, he balked, his cold feet dangling over an imaginary swimming pool, daring himself to jump in. He eyed the clippers apprehensively, one blue orb peering through
green editions
thickets of brown hair. As the clippers hummed in my hand I realized that I hadn’t any idea how to cut a Mohawk. Regardless, I began pushing the clippers cheerfully through his hair, hoping for the best, humming in a sort of jaunty mumble. Every few seconds he whispered “ow” for no clear reason, watching giant pillows of hair fall from the clippers onto the floor. I advised him to sit still at regular intervals, pushing his head first to one side, then the next. Gradually, the Mohawk came into focus, like a clipper-ship through fog. It morphed into a mostly Mohawk/high-and-tight mashup, perhaps a faux-hawk. It made him look beefy and a little menacing, like he’d dressed up for Halloween as some kind of punk-rock freakytweaky meth-head, missing only homemade tattoos on his knuckles and weird symbols etched into his forehead with a ballpoint pen. His 10-year-old sister said he looked hot. He admired the fauxhawk in the bathroom mirror, reflexively rubbing his stubbly scalp, fanning his fingers through the longer hair that sprouted from the middle of his scalp like some small furry mammal stuck to his head. A couple of days later his secondgrade class staged a play, apparently
set in Shogun-era Japan. Throngs of parents with iPhones crowded into the cramped basement classroom. Our boy played the commander of a squadron of drum-beating samurais, all dressed in silk robes with white hachimakis wrapped around their heads. For most of the first half of the play he stood scowling and stock-still, arms crossed with a drumstick in each hand, staring straight ahead. At a prearranged signal, he shouted a series of commands in clipped Japanese and began pounding his drum in a sort of hybrid kamikaze/flamenco frenzy. We stared slack-jawed, transfixed. Where did this this freaky samurai kid come from? Just last week he was wearing a pair of black jeans with one ripped-out knee and half of an athletic sock on the opposing forearm, peering through a crush of stringy-straight brown hair looking like Dee Dee Ramone. He probably has a future in the military, if not punk rock. The fauxhawk is the only haircut I’ve given him that he’s liked. It’ll grow back. Hart Academy is a beneficial option. We are the parents of the three graduating seniors from the Hart Academy set up two years ago through Vashon Youth and Family Services. These three girls opted to be among the first students in this academic pilot program, which arose from a high school girls’ support group. All are bright, talented girls who wanted more control over their learning in a more supportive environment. They were all motivated independent learners who were struggling with anxiety and stress. They have all blossomed under the caring attention of the dedicated teachers involved at HART Academy and the leadership of Marianne Rose (and initially Ken Maaz) who created the concept and had the vision and drive to see it through. All three girls received multiple scholarships from the Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation. Our daughters are uniquely qualified to set forth on their journeys post graduation, as their HART Academy experiences have fostered exploration of their personal interests and talents, and taught them the importance of organization and planning. We also thank the professionals of Family Link who worked with the three girls to ensure that their academic pursuits met graduation standards. We gratefully thank the teachers and founders of HART. We encourage other parents with students who would benefit from independent learning, but with a more structured academic and emotional support system, to consider HART Academy as an option. Thank you for PIE grants The kindergarten team at Chautauqua would like to extend a thank you to all those who make PIE grants possible. Thanks to you, the kindergarten team was able to purchase child- sized furniture and nonfiction books. Students were overjoyed to find new, comfortable chairs and couches in their space. The furniture motivates them to participate in imaginative play, helping them practice their reasoning and social skills. The nonfiction readers are incorporated into many
areas of the curriculum with guided reading, pleasure reading and science and social studies integration. In addition, students are matched with the right reader and given one to take home each week. After reading the book with their families, students return to school ready to read to a partner and sometimes the whole class. Students, teachers and families will benefit for years to come. PIE has helped to make reading more available to all students and made it possible for it to happen in a safe, comfortable environment. Thank you, PIE. The 23rd annual Junior Sailing Program will be offered this summer beginning July 15 and ending the week of Aug. 19. Each week of camp junior sailors, ages 11 and older, will spend four days on the water with Sail USA-certified instructors. Junior programs are limited to 20 sailors and run from 10 am to 4 p.m. Beginner sailors, ages 8 to 10, will have one instructor for every four sailors as they learn how to safely be on the water and the basics of handling a boat, sailing techniques, water safety and marine ecology. Beginner camps are limited to 12 sailors and run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both groups meet at the Quartermaster Yacht Club. One junior and one beginner camp will be offered each week. Class fees are $220 per student if paid by June 23 and $245 per student per week after June 23. Scholarships are available through Vashon Park District. Twenty members of the Vashon Bridge Club recently participated in the Longest Day Fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association by holding bridge games on the longest day of the year to raise funds to help prevent the disease. The club raised $600 for by playing two daytime bridge games in the True Value-Thriftway complex and one evening bridge game at the Gold Beach clubhouse. In addition to the benefits of dollars for research to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, the act of playing bridge and other mind games is thought to help prevent the onset of the disease. According to organizers, the nationally advertised campaign encouraged fundraiser participants to do what they love to raise awareness and funds for the fight to end Alzheimer’s, which afflicts more than 5 million Americans. “We hope the experience will improve our own health, and that the researchers will achieve something wonderful to improve the health of all,” said James Dan, one of the members who participated in the event last week. Talented women will strut their stuff in a show A slew of talented island singer/songwriters will have a showcase of their work at 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Bicycle Bistro. It’s an all-female roster filled with well-known names, including Kat Eggleston, Allison Shirk, Cami Lundeen, Kate MacLeod, Jamie Jackson, Maya, Delilah Pearl and Kiki Means. All the performers appear regularly on stages around town, singing with a variety of ensembles and bands. This time, though, each of the singers will have a separate turn in the spotlight — the format of the evening is one solo performer at a time. And although each performer will weave together story, melody and the music of an acoustic guitar, concert-goers can expect a wide variety of styles and songs. Shirk says her songs describe her life experiences in a way that is meant to linger in the minds of her listeners. Lundeen brings a lot of emotion and a deeply personal story
to her music. She turned to songwriting as an outlet for dealing with her diagnosis of a rare, incurable liver disease. Her fans say her vocals are sultry and that she brings a powerful vulnerability to her songwriting. MacLeod’s songwriting style links traditional music with contemporary songwriting. Her songs have been recorded by artists from California to the Czech Republic, including bluegrass musicians, Celtic musicians and traditional singers. Jackson’s songs, show organizers say, range from gut-wrenching to pure comedy. Eggleston, a Vashon native who has traveled the world playing her music, is a highly respected writer and interpreter of song. Organizers of Friday’s show say Maya has a stunning and brazen voice that has recently made audiences on Vashon sit up and take notice. Pearl loves the vocal styling of 1930s and ‘40s, delivering up

Islanders can feast their eyes at a quilt show Several island merchants are displaying quilts this week in a colorful prelude to the Vashon Quilt Guild’s show, set to begin Friday. Since 2001, the guild has hosted a show every other year, highlighting the skill of Vashon’s quilters and the art of quilting itself. In this year’s show, nearly 160 quilts will be on display at Island Quilter and across the street at the Presbyterian church. Adding to the show, more than 30 merchants are displaying quilts in their businesses to create a quilt walk that extends from Giraffe to Kathy’s Corner. Organizers says the intent of the walk is to give quilting more visibility and encourage both islanders and tourists to more fully explore downtown Vashon.
“Part of our intent with the show is to promote other island businesses,” said Su DeWalt, the guild’s president and show organizer. The title of the show this year is Island Journey — appropriate for a show hung in two places, DeWalt said — and it will showcase quilts in a range of styles and sizes. At the church, the show will also include a demonstration of hand quilting on an Irish chain quilt and a quilt store, where several quilts, both new and vintage, will be for sale. Visitors to the show can vote on their favorite quilt on Friday and until 2 p.m. Saturday; the winner of the Viewer’s Choice award will displayed after that time. Certified quilt judges will award other ribbons to

quilts before the show opens. Vashon’s Community Quilt will be on display at the church, and raffle tickets will be for sale. The entry fee is $5 and free for veterans and children 12 and under. Entry can be purchased at either location, and maps for the quilt walk will be provided.
Tarana, a world fusion group that includes islander Jason Everett, will release its first CD, “Waves of Sound,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Vashon Havurat. The group plays original music influenced by Indian, Arabic, Eastern European, Latin and flamenco styles. Attendees will see unique instruments at the show, including a contra-bass flute, which is about 7 feet long and played standing up, a triple flute that plays three notes at once, Everett’s seven-string fretless bass and the tabla, an Indian hand drums. Band members, in addition to Everett, include flutist Ann Lindquist, guitarist Kenyon Curtiss, who has composed the lion’s share of the songs on the CD, and tabla player Anil Prasad. “Waves of Sound” has already won accolades from several notable world music experts and players. “Tarana is both meditative and full of fire. It transports me to other worldly

The Vashon Seals Swim Team recently reached an important milestone when it earned a Level One club recognition from USA Swimming, the national governing body of swimming in the United States. USA Swimming’s Club Recognition Program provides participating clubs a development process for establishing organizationally stable, financially sound and athletically productive programs. Seals coaches say the team has worked for several years to meet the requirements for a Level 1 rating. “This team development process fits in
perfectly with our team mission of personal achievement, team unity and competitive excellence,� said head coach Lisa MacLeod. USA Swimming evaluates swim teams in four major areas: Business and Organizational Success, which includes developing a mission statement, bylaws and budget; Parent and Volunteer Development; Coach Development and Education; and Athletic Development and Performance, which includes athlete education and character development, as well as team participation in at least six USA Swimming competitions each year. — Tom Gross Shader is the father of a Seals swimmer.
Last week two Vashon wrestlers competed in USA Wrestling’s Regional Championships in Pocatello, Idaho, and one young islander won the highly competitive Triple Crown award. At the championships, Hunter Burger, 13, and Adrian St. Germain, 12, competed in three different tournaments involving three different styles of wrestling: Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. The two boys qualified to compete in regionals at the state championships in Tacoma in April. Last week in Pocatello they went up against the top wrestlers from 11 Western states, including Alaska and Hawaii. Hunter competed with courage and won a combined three matches throughout the week. “Hunter has improved immensely and is turning into a very good wres-

Adrian won the championships in all three styles of wrestling, earning the coveted Triple Crown award. Adrian not only won every match with ease — his closest match was 7-0 — but he also demolished the number one-ranked wrestler in the country three times, once in each style. He also won the Triple Crown at the state competition ear-
lier this year. “Adrian is proving to be one of the best wrestlers in the country,� Blomgren said. Both Hunter and Adrian compete with the Vashon Rockbusters wrestling club and McMurray Middle School’s wrestling team. During the off-season, they represent Vashon at the Pin City Wrestling Club, which is based in Seattle.

Crowds come out to celebrate sea life Vashon’s eighth-annual Low Tide Celebration drew a crowd on Sunday, despite the day dawning cold and rainy. The rain let up, though; the day turned pleasant, and organizers say roughly 1,000 people headed to Point Robinson for the popular event, which featured a very low tide, a multitude of sea creatures normally hidden underwater, beach naturalists to help explain it all and the Blue Heron canoe, which gave rides all afternoon. The event went well, according Vashon
Beach Naturalist and organizer Rayna Holtz. “There were many wonderful finds on the beach,” she said. Among the finds were a brittle star, moon snails, large sea stars and red rock crabs, including several pairs that were mating, which Holtz said is unusual to see. Several anemones also had their moment in the sun yesterday, she noted, as well as jellyfish, including moon jellies and a lion’s mane jellyfish.

ground without some private donors on Vashon.” Misty Isle Farm, the sprawling estate Stewart pieced together decades ago from multiple parcels, went on the market in 2007, when the wealthy businessman moved his company, Services Group of America, to Arizona. Stewart died in a helicopter accident in 2010. Originally priced at $125 million, Misty Isle, which includes rolling pastures, miles of wooded trails, a 6,500-square-foot home and several other structures, was said at the time to be one of the most expensive residential properties in the world. The estate has since been taken off the market, but Dean said many islanders remain concerned that once the real estate market recovers, the property, with pieces owned by both Stewart’s family and his company, will eventually be purchased for development. Some have suggested a resort or hotel may go in, and Dean believes there are development rights to build up to 48 homes there. For years, he said, there’s been talk of trying to protect it. “Instead of letting some developer snatch that up and do something we don’t like that doesn’t fit the character of the island or doesn’t support the island that much, can we put this property in community ownership and control?” he said. The 10-person exploratory committee, which includes farmers, conservationists, lawyers and real estate experts, is now vetting many ideas for the ecologically diverse place. Large swaths of the property are already protected as farmland — the site once held Stewart’s black Angus cattle and before
that the Wax Orchards farm. Group members imagine it could be the future site of a large-scale farming operation, creating local jobs and providing a constant supply for buyers both on and off the island. Produce, dairy, even meat produced at the farm could be sold to local grocery stores and organizations such as the school district or Vashon Community Care, something Dean said would “close the loop” and keep dollars on the island. Merilee Runyan, the president of the Vashon Island Grower’s Association and an organizer of the exploratory committee, said so far the idea had local farmers’ support. “Most of the farms on the island are small acreages intensively cultivated,” she said. “I think all of us would benefit from more land on which to grow crops.” Amenities established at the site — perhaps a farm-to-table restaurant or vacation rentals — could generate income there, Dean said, something that would help cover the high costs of maintaining the property but that committee members believe could be more controversial than farming. “I don’t see this penciling out without some sort of agro-tourism business,” he said. “Maybe instead of rows of mansions, it’s rows of yurts and people are coming out for weddings and eating in restaurants with food supplied on-site.” From a conservation standpoint, Dean said, he’s excited about the prospect of preserving acres of habitat, including the stretch of Fisher Creek that runs through Misty Isle, and keeping miles of trails open to hikers, runners and equestrians. There’s also been talk of offering farm education at the site, perhaps through internships or partnering with a local college, and providing lowincome housing for workers. “It is a great piece of property for the community because it has the potential to
contain all these different possibilities,” Runyan said. While hopeful about their ideas, both Dean and Runyan say a plan will only take off if it’s one islanders support — and give generously to. Though the property isn’t currently on the market, Dean said committee members have been in touch with members of Stewart’s family and representatives of his company who have given them hope. Those they’ve talked with won’t say much and don’t seem to consider the group a serious buyer, Dean said, but some have indicated that family members aren’t interested in keeping the place and if a buyer should approach them with funds in hand, they’d likely consider an offer. Rich Wilson, president of Development Services of America, a subsidiary of Services Group of America based in Arizona, said on Monday that he hadn’t heard that anyone was seriously looking at the property and declined to comment on the situation. “The property is not marketed for sale. That’s about the best I can tell you right now,” he said. Dave Speers, a Seattle broker who handled Misty Isle’s listing when it was on the market, said every now and then he gets calls about the property, but he’s had no serious inquiries in years. He’s not sure what the estate would sell for now, he said, but he would forward any offers to Stewart’s family. He said he did speak with someone from Vashon recently. “We’re not engaged with them at all,” he said, referring to the exploratory committee. Dean said more conversations were in order should they move forward, but a broker close to the situation suggested a buyer — either the land trust or a newly created nonprofit — may be able to purchase the property for $25 million.
“He’s not the owner, so we don’t really know how it would all play out,” Dean said. While he believed any buyer would have to purchase the entire thing, Dean said, it’s possible that portions with homes or other structures on them could be sold off afterward, recouping some of costs. And like the performing arts facility that Vashon Allied Arts is currently fundraising to build, it’s likely that a working farm at Misty Isle would require an endowment for operations. “It’s incredibly exciting and it’s incredibly daunting at the same time,” Dean said. “I think part of the challenge is … even though it’s fun to noodle on, how do we make this pay for itself?” The concept, nonetheless, is gathering interest from large regional players. PCC Farmland Trust, which has preserved more than 1,100 acres of working farmland in the Northwest, has been involved in the committee’s talks and is “very interested,” Dean said. Christie True, director of the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks and a Vashon resident, has also been to committee meetings. She said that should the group craft a viable plan for the site, the county would likely consider helping fund its purchase. Money from the county’s parks levy and Conservation Futures Tax are set aside specifically for projects such as this, she said. Conservation Futures funds helped the county purchase the former Glacier site, True noted, and thecounty recently put forward $11 million to purchase the development rights to a 43,000-acre tree farm in southeast King County. State and federal programs, she noted, also fund farmland preservation. “It’s definitely not a crazy idea,” she said. “We’re always looking for what are the opportunities for conservation and preservation throughout King County, including Vashon.”

News about the thefts and a potential suspect have been circulating on Vashon by word of mouth and email list serves. West, however, declined to comment on specifics, but stressed that the string of thefts is being actively investigated. She added that islanders should lock their doors and windows when they leave their homes. Most who had items stolen said they did not always lock their doors when they were out, West said, but it is not clear yet if the intruder always comes in through unlocked doors and windows or sometimes uses a device to gain entry without leaving clues behind. Bianchi, who has since installed a security system, believes the thief stole $5,000 to $10,000 worth of jewelry, including diamond and aquamarine earrings, a sapphire ring and gold bracelets — and perhaps other items she has not discovered yet. “They knew what to go for,” she said. The items were in a drawer in her bedroom, she said, and like several of the other women who shared their stories,
she at first wondered if someone close to her — a family member, a housecleaner or a landscape worker — might have taken the items. “You don’t even imagine there’s an outsider who’s come into your room,” she said. Maria Pottinger, who lives near Portage, noticed late last month that about half of her jewelry was missing, she said. It, too, had been inside a dresser drawer, and she thought perhaps one of her young children or one their friends might have taken the items, attracted, she said, to “shiny baubles.” She said she had several difficult conversations with the parents of her children’s friends, hoping to get her jewelry back while not involving the authorities. “You think of everybody, and nobody makes sense,” she said. After she learned about some of the other thefts, she said, she called the police. Pottinger believes about 10 items are missing, including her mother’s wedding ring, a birthstone ring from high school and a tennis bracelet she bought long ago. The thefts of such items would be difficult enough from a store, she said, but the thief has stolen heirlooms and wedding rings — items with personal significance. “This is not just inventory,” Pottinger said. “It is not emotionless stock.”

Pottinger said the family kept their doors unlocked most of the time, but they have a large dog that is typically home and that she thought would have been a deterrent to any intruders. Because she doesn’t wear her fine jewelry often, she doesn’t know exactly when it was taken — possibly anytime between Christmas and late May. In upper Burton, Linda Sferra said she believes she knows exactly when this month a thief stole her favorite earrings and a bracelet from what she described as a “wellhidden, safe place.” A vehicle had been spotted in her driveway while she was out one day, she said, and it matched the description of the vehicle a neighbor encountered in her driveway that same day. The earrings will not be valuable to the thief, she said, but they meant a great deal to her because she bought them on a trip to Italy with her mother. “He created the perfect lose-lose situation,” she said of the thief. “We both have nothing.” Unlike other victims, Sferra said there was an indication a thief had been in her home, and, in fact, she believes he was likely there twice. Though Sferra feels violated, she said the repercussions from the thefts are larger than her own experience. “This threatens our Vashon lifestyle: honor bar flower stands, honor bar vegetable stands, living without putting energy into defending your stuff.” Sferra’s neighbor Trish Howard, who came upon a man walking out of her home, said she doesn’t have jewelry and found nothing missing after the incident. She believes she may have interrupted the man when she pulled into the driveway. His vehicle was parked at an odd angle, she said, and was facing out. She parked in front of it and stayed in her car, but asked him if she could help him and if he was looking for someone. The man claimed he was looking for someone who was a detective, and Howard said she suggested he talk with her neighbor, Dept. Jeff Hancock. The man, in fact, went next door and spoke with him. Hancock could not be reached for comment about the incident. Ironically, Howard said, she may have cooked dinner for the man because she is a volunteer with the free community meals program, and she believes she recognized him from a recent dinner. In Dilworth, Glenna Mileson said she was startled to find jewelry missing from her bedroom late last month. She is in the same book group as Bianchi, she said, and had talked with her the month before about Bianchi’s stolen jewelry. Like some of the other women, she has looked for her jewelry in places it might now be for sale, she said, and contacted the detective on the case to learn, if possible, how to track down her belongings, including her wedding ring and an opal necklace she cherishes that she purchased on a family trip to Australia. Unlike many of the others, Mileson said her family usually locks the doors when they leave, though it was possible they may have been unlocked when the thief entered, which she expects was sometime in mid- to late May. She, too, said she first imagined that a friend or family member must have taken the items — a thought she did not relish. But it was difficult to think otherwise. “On Vashon, we have no experience with this,” she said.
