ucker Russell hopes for a little bit of “kismet” this weekend — in more ways than one.
Of Arabic origin, the word commonly means “luck,” “fate” or “destiny.” It’s also the title of one of the Skyline senior’s two videos up for Northwest Regional Emmy Awards on June 15 at Seattle’s Paramount Theater. “It makes me a little nervous, I really want to walk away with one of them,” said Russell, who would be the first from his school to earn the honor. Two years ago, Samantha Stendal, a talented Skyline grad and University of Oregon sophomore known for a recent anti-rape video that went viral with 2.4 million views, was up for two Emmys in the high school category. She walked away empty handed. “It would be really nice if this was the first,” said Bob Palmer, the school’s video production instructor. Russell’s video “Kismet,” is a 3 minute, 16 second film synched to the sound of hip hop

The video, produced by Jeremy Millar, features Russell and Morgan Huish bumping into one another on a sidewalk. The two drop their phones and glasses, unknowingly mixing them up. They later take the wrong coffee from the counter, which sets in motion a series of events that draw the two back together. Russell’s other video was originally shot for the Issaquah School District’s Influence the Choice competition and finished first in the individual Marijuana category. It features Russell, playing a marijuana user, trying to get a friend, played by Damien Banki, to take a hit. Banki envisions what will happen if he takes the hit, with an effect of the camera shooting into his eye. The path leads to using harder
drugs, eventually showing Banki passing out after snorting cocaine. The camera then shoots back out of Banki’s eye and he denies the hit. Russell, who will attend the University of Arizona next fall, plans on majoring in film production. He hopes to continue producing short films and dabbling in feature length movies and music production — eventually turning it into a career. He said he looks up to a wide variety of directors ranging from the popular Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrahams to the lesser known Tyler E., a commercial and music video producer. “I just love the fact that film combines several different arts,” said Russell, who only produced his first video two years ago as a sophomore. “You have the music, the sound mixing, the visuals and you put it all together and it makes a story that almost anyone in the world could coherently watch, listen to and get that not other art forms could do.” The graduating senior knows an Emmy would go a long way to boosting his career. “It would a huge deal for me,” Russell said. “I want to be remembered as one of those film makers that not just put up great films but just SEE NOMINEE, 10
The last day to submit language to the county auditor to propose the annexation of Klahanie and surrounding neighborhoods is Aug. 6. That means the city of Issaquah needs to make some decisions in a timely manner. At Tuesday’s meeting of the city’s Land and Shore Committee, the city’s finance director, Diane Marcotte, presented a fiscal analysis of the proposed annexation, based on a report which was prepared by consultants Tom Nesbitt, of Nesbitt Planning and Management, Inc., along with independent consultant Cynthia Stewart. Annexing Klahanie and 12 surrounding neighborhoods would produce about $620,000 in net income for Issaquah, before taking into account start-up costs and a sales tax-credit from the state that the city of Issaquah will have to apply for. Issaquah would gain about $6.47 million annually from additional property tax, some sales tax, state-shared revenues, utility taxes and real estate excise tax. Cost to the city to service the new areas would be about $5.85 million. The Land and Shore committee, consisting of council members Fred Butler, Stacy Goodman and standing in for Tola Marts, Josh Schaer, agreed that the next step is an agenda bill, which will be prepared by city administration. The bill is scheduled to go to the full council at the regular July 1 or July 15 meetings. “It’s time, I believe, to make a decision,” Butler said. Bernita Howard of Issaquah waited to take to the track for the Survivor’s lap with her daughter. Both women have had breast cancer. Not only that, both her grandparents, two aunts on her father’s side, her mom and dad and her husband all died of cancer. “The only one who hasn’t had it is my 19-year-old grandson,” Howard said. She said her husband had pancreatic cancer, her father abdominal cancer, and her mother had breast cancer that metastasized to her brain, which is what killed her. Then there was Chan Beauvais, the father of two young children, who is one of few who survived lung cancer, the cancer which has one of the lowest survival rates. They were all at the Issaquah Relay for Life Friday evening, June 7, held on the Issaquah High School field for the first time in several years. With brand-new high-dollar turf on the field, organizers could not stress enough that the only thing to be consumed on the field was water. Food concessions and restrooms were located just off the field, since Relay events are all night. Co-chair Gwen Schweitzer said the really special thing about the Issaquah Relay was the people. All told, there were about 900 gathered, most of them high school students out to support a good cause. The Issaquah Relay raised $258,000 (and counting) for cancer research. Relay for Life, a function of the American Cancer Society, started right here in Washington state, the brainchild of Dr. Gordy Klatt of Tacoma. Now, more than 4 million

Teams must keep one person walking on the track all night because “cancer never sleeps.” Cancer researcher with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Dr. John Chevillet, spoke to the crowd before race time. “Because of you and the funds you raise, I’ve been able to do more creative cancer research,” Chevillet said. “Funding from the American Cancer Society in an outstanding way of receiving support.”
He added that Relay is especially important for fundraising when the government is having so much trouble funding bio-medical research. Right now Chevillet is working on developing a blood test using a new molecule to identify certain types of cancer. Volunteers were also signing people up for a new study, CPS3, or Cancer Prevention Study 3. CPS1 resulted in evidence that smoking caused lung cancer. CPS3 will monitor participants between ages 30 and 65 to study how their lifestyle choices affect cancer.
Colorful costumes, vendor’s booths and tents of every kind dotted the field, creating a carnival like atmosphere. The number of youth that participated in Relay was impressive. “Got Hope” team captain Rddhi Moodliar, a 2003 IHS graduate, started participating in Relay in the eighth grade. “The day of my first Relay, my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer,” she said. He’s still alive, receiving treatment in his native India.

The Department of Natural Resources stated in its response to logger Kurt Erickson’s most recent application to log only on the top of Squak Mountain, that it “believes the landowner/applicant is an alter ego of other persons or entities that do own 500 acres within 50 miles of saltwater. The landowner/applicant claims it owns less than 500 acres within 50 miles of saltwater and thus is not subject to the critical habitat trigger for marbled murrelets. Therefore, more information is needed to assess the potential marbled murrelets habitat at the site.” This latest permit application was for

Eastside Catholic seniors celebrate 2013 graduation Eastside Catholic celebrated its 31st graduating class June 9 at the school’s gymnasium in Sammamish. Scott Oki, former senior vice-president of sales and marketing for Microsoft and founder of Oki Foundation, was the commencement speaker.
Of the 147 students participating, 99 percent will attend colleges or universities. In all, the class of 2013 will attend 61 different colleges or universities. Forty-four of the graduates were from Sammamish and 19 were from Issaquah.

Issaquah Festivals Office looks for art The Issaquah Festivals Office is accepting submissions of fine art, illustrations, and/or graphic designs for potential

We need modern tools in modern warfare

ewspapers reported June 5 that the National Security Agency is collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon under a top secret court to identify terrorists. I decided to see what the government may have gathered about our family that day if it was scooping up information from our telephone service provided by Comcast. There wasn’t much to scoop. We only placed two calls that day. One, for 36 seconds, was to a landscaper. The other was for zero seconds. I don’t remember, but probably a misdial. We received six calls. In order they were: 1 minute, 18 seconds reminding my wife about an appointment; 2 seconds from a telemarketer (we hung up quickly); 1 minute, 32 seconds from the above landscaper leaving us a voice mail; 6 seconds from another telemarketer; 42 seconds from me to my wife telling her that my deadline work was wrapping and that I would be home soon; and 1 minute, 7 seconds from our next-door neighbor asking if we wanted a soaker hose she no longer needed. We missed one call – from the Puget Sound Blood Center asking me to donate blood. I’m pretty sure most of the calls made in this country are like that. Critics are upset, but it should be obvious that past methods no longer work to unearth terrorists who can be deadly when they strike. Remember Boston? The key, then, is having controls on how the government uses the information. That appears to be the case. Key members of Congress are aware of the program and it takes a federal judge to approve a request. Should there be more steps? Maybe. But we need modern tools in these times of modern warfare. Bikes need to follow rules, too
I
realize biking to and from work has great benefits – most notably for the environment and personal health. In fact, many cities, including Issaquah and Bellevue, recently celebrated “Bike to Work Day” to honor the alternative form of transportation. I applaud those go out of the way to Kevin Endejan protect the environment, save on gas and promote a healthy lifestyle – whether it’s just for the one day a year or on a daily basis. But, I have one simple request – if you’re going to do it, please follow the rules of the road. As a frequent automobile user on the Eastside – from Bothell to Bellevue and Sammamish to Redmond – I often encounter the two-wheeled variety of transportation. Many times those bicyclists abide by the rules. But more often than not, I see a variety of fancy maneuvers, that, if a car were to perform and a police officer was in the area, would result in
LETTERS DNA RULING GOES TOO FAR The June 7 issue of the Issaquah/Sammamish Reporter contained op/ed about the recent Supreme Court decision to allow authorities to collect DNA samples from (presumed innocent) citizens who have been arrested for any reason. Editor Craig Groshart recites the argument
an immediate ticket. Just the other day, on a back road from Bothell to Woodinville, there was a bicyclist coming down a hill on a side road. He was going a good 25 mph, showed no indication of slowing for the stop sign in front of him, and cut directly in front of me. There was absolutely nothing safe or sensible about his action. I could easily keep a tally of riders who ride on the road, cut to the sidewalk when it gives them an advantage, and jump back to the road. Then there’s those, who when approaching a stop light, maneuver their way through a line of vehicles to the front of the line. Suddenly, they’re not only impeding the flow of traffic for a couple of vehicles, but a whole line of cars. The most frustrating offender – the bicyclist who sees there is no traffic coming from the left or right and completely blows the red light. It seems many bike riders follow the rules when it suits them, but don’t hesitate to break them when given an opportunity. You can’t have it both ways. Let’s not forget about sensibility. While many times a bicyclist might follow the rules, they don’t put them-
that DNA is simply a better version of fingerprints that can be used to identify criminals. To equate fingerprints to DNA is like comparing a single word on a piece of paper with an encyclopedia. Fingerprints can be used to link an individual to an object or a place, but DNA contains about 3 billion bits of data detailing every detail of every physical and mental trait we each possess. It can also be used to identify near and distant
selves in the safest situation. Like it or not, cars take up more space and weigh thousands of pounds. The unfortunate truth is, the automobile will win in a collision. There’s one particular road close to my home on 112th Place Northeast in Bothell. It’s a windy, tight road with no shoulder – really there’s barely enough space for two cars going in opposite directions to squeeze past one another. Despite this, I frequently see bicyclists, sometimes in packs, making their way up the low-visibility hill. Sure it’s the responsibility of vehicles to watch out for bikes and to allow them room. But let’s be honest, this doesn’t always happen like it should. The most frustrating part of this particular situation is there’s a road just a short distance away that goes up the hill and has bike lanes. I respect the effort bicyclists make, regardless of the motivation. But please, do everyone a favor and follow the rules. It will make us all safer in the end. YOU could get picked up by mistake for some reason and join the database of serious felons. Considering revelations about the Feds monitoring our e-mails and other internet activity, can we trust them to honorably administer files of our DNA?
The Supreme Court decision is too broad.They jumped the gun, allowing DNA collection of any arrested person ahead of the development of a detailed framework of genetic civil liberty protections. It’s the slippery slope of slippery slopes. I hope the courts will realize they have made a mistake and put the necessary restrictions in place and get the horse back in front of the cart.

Sammamish police stumbled upon two 20-year-old Issaquah men parked at the intersection of Southeast 29th Street and 226th Avenue Southeast. Suspicious of what they were doing, the officer approached the vehicle and noticed one occupant fumbling with something in his lap. The officer saw a green plant like material all over the man’s lap and noted a strong odor of marijuana. The drugs were confiscated and the men were released.

VACANT HOME VANDALS
A Sammamish woman contacted police June 7 after finding a gallon of fat-free milk surrounded by rocks on her front doorstep. Police confirmed the liquid was milk and took it to the station for evidence. The woman was uncertain why the milk was there, but believes it could have something to do with her ex-husband and his pending trial revolving around child pornography.
A Sammamish woman called police June 4 after witnessing three teenagers in a neighboring vacant home. The woman said she heard sounds of glass breaking and banging. The woman said the house in the 21200 block of Northeast 6th Street has been vacant for two years, since her neighbor died of a drug overdose. Officers were unable to locate any teenagers, but found someone had dropped a large object through a basement skylight.

STOLEN MEDICINE An employee of the Mary Queen of Peace preschool contacted police June 6 after discovering someone stole two lock boxes containing bottles of Benadryl and two epi pens. It was the last day at school and the woman noticed the boxes missing when parents came to pick up their children’s medication.
RACING TO THE PUMP Issaquah police were contacted for an accident at the Costco gas station June 4 after two vehicles collided going for the same pump. There was minor damage to both vehicles and no injuries.
‘ANY WAY YOU WANT IT’ Police were called to a an Issaquah apartment June 5 after a resident was reportedly playing his music too loud. When officers arrived at the building in the 2400 block of Northeast Park Drive, they heard music from the ‘80s band Journey blasting. The renter was contacted and advised about the noise. He shut his window.
HOME BURGLARIZED Sammamish residents contacted police May 30 after discovering their home in the 2200 block of 216th Avenue Southeast was burglarized. Thieves, who appeared to enter through the laundry room window, made off with thousands of dollars worth of jewelry, computers and other electronics.
GONE FISHING An Issaquah resident contacted police June 3, reporting juveniles dislodged three storm grates and dropped them down their respective manholes on Northwest James Bush Road. Officers were able to “fish” the grates out of the holes and replace them.
SMASH & GRAB Issaquah police were contacted June 3 after someone broke into a car in the 1000 block of Northwest Gilman Boulevard and stole $4,000 worth of backpacks, laptops and other items.

A group of bike riders take the first official ride down the trail after it reopened on Wednesday. JOSH SUMAN, Issaquah & Sammamish Reporter the city after the trail closed last year, said he has utilized other sections of the East Lake Sammamish and Burke-Gilman trails to ride his bike, but is especially excited for the reopening of the Issaquah stretch. “It goes right past where I live, so no more putting the bike on the car,” he said. “I like being off the road away
from the traffic, not having that noise and danger.” After closing in May of last year, a contracting firm worked to construct earthen walls, improve grading, build fencing and eventually pave the trail to replace the crushed rock surface, which now forms a two-foot wide soft surface shoulder on either side.
The stretch from Gilman Boulevard to SE 43rd Way was the second phase of a multi-year development plan that began with a 1.2mile segment of the trail running through Redmond. A 7-mile segment running from NE 187th St. to SE 43rd St. is slated to begin construction in early 2014.

Eastside Catholic grad and current Oregon State University pitcher Matt Boyd was picked at 175 overall by the Toronto Blue Jays and spent the weekend helping his Beavers in an NCAA baseball super regional against Kansas State. Boyd was drafted in 2012 after his junior year by the Cincinnati Reds, but elected instead to return to Corvallis and entered the starting rotation this season and the 6’3 left-hander will now look to a future with the Blue Jays after completing his final collegiate season. Another former Crusader, Cal Towey, went to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with pick 517. Towey, a four-year letterman and 2008 Eastside Catholic graduate, played the past four seasons at Baylor after redshirting in 2009. The unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Conference First Team (and second team selection in 2012) was also his team’s second leading hitter with a .291 batting average in 199 at bats. Towey also knocked in a team high 45 runs for the Bears this season while playing third base and his 36 walks and 14 hit by pitches were also team-highs. A total of 34 players who played their high school or college baseball in Washington were selected, led by Kentwood senior catcher Reese McGuire, who was chosen 14th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates and Marco Gonzales from Gonzaga, a junior pitcher selected 19th by the St. Louis Cardinals.

One of the Eastside’s most utilized recreation and alternative commuting corridors moved one step closer to completion Wednesday. Representatives from the city of Issaquah, King County Council, King County Parks, Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition and Cascade Bicycle Club joined a few dozen citizens for a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially reopen the Issaquah segment of the East Lake Sammamish Trail after it had been closed for more than a year for upgrades. “This has been a marvelous partnership,” Issaquah Mayor Ava Frisinger said. “I hear from citizens all the time wondering when the trail will reopen.” Those who came to the ceremony or use the trail in the coming weeks and months will notice a number of changes, most noticeably the paved surface and improved fencing and landscaping along its sides. Issaquah resident Bob Carroll has a hard time remembering things shortterm, but he remembers dates and events during his time in the service without hesitation. The son of a WWII veteran, Carroll joined the army June 14, 1966. His
father, Lewis Carroll — not to be confused with the famous author — fought in Cebu, in the Philippines in WWII. A corporal, the elder Carroll was tasked with going door to door in Japan, after the war, informing residents that the war was over since they had no communication to the outside world. Carroll wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. “I volunteered for Vietnam,” Carroll said. His then girlfriend, who would become his first wife,
didn’t want him to go, so through connections she had, his 1049 form was pulled, but he re-enlisted. She was in the Women’s Army Corp. They both were stationed in Germany in 1967. In April 1970, he was deployed to Vietnam. He’d only been there two weeks when the US invaded Cambodia. He worked as a machine gunner escorting convoys in and out of Vietnam for two months and amazingly they were never shot at. However, they did
encounter a land mine that did some serious damage to their rigs. On Thanksgiving Day, 1970, he was at Phuoc Vinh, forward base. “We had a beautiful Thanksgiving dinner,” Carroll said. “I was looking forward to a good sleep after the big meal.” Not a leader, or wanting to be one, he saw the platoon leaders coming toward him. If he zigged right, they did the same. He couldn’t avoid them. One of the squad leaders hadn’t come back from Saigon they said, so being short a squad leader they wanted him to take the job. He told them he hadn’t even had advanced infantry training yet, but after running out of excuses, he accepted his new position. With Thanksgiving dinner still heavy in his belly, his squad had to go out — right then. They were out in the jungle until Jan. 4, 1971. After finding a big clearing where a chopper could land, the men were able to get supplies dropped for them. But now the VC knew where they were, he SEE BOB CARROLL, 8

said, so they had to move. “I saw this box, about 40-inches by 8-inches by 8-inches with my name on it, but we had to move so I couldn’t open it,” he said. So he packed it around. At times he really wanted to cut it loose because it was
constantly getting tangled up in the thick jungle vines. When he finally opened the box, which had been sent by his aunt and grandmother in Virginia, he was surprised to see a Christmas tree inside. It was artificial, but nobody cared. On Christmas Day, they found a clearing where some timber had been cut. There were large stumps everywhere, so the men put the tree up on a stump, decorated it, and put all the care packages they had received around the

tree, and opened them just like they were Christmas presents. “We had the most wonderful Christmas ever,” Carroll said. No longer uncomfortable with his leadership position, the squad got a new battalion commander who informed them they were going to be trained in long-range reconnaissance patrol. The men learned to repel from helicopters and use camouflage to completely blend in with the jungle.
Carroll was “turned loose” from Vietnam in February 1971. “It is one on my goals to go back to Vietnam and see some of the places I was in, in peace time,” he said. Carroll is active in Toastmasters now and tells his many stories. He has three grown sons – Kenneth, 36, Michael, 38, and Ronald, 44. Ronald served in Desert Storm, operating heavy machinery, and lives in Anchorage, Alaska, while the younger sons are in Washington. Carroll also has seven grandchildren.

split this time. Dick L’Heureux of Klahanie was on the nine-member task force appointed by Mayor Ava Frisinger to be a sounding board for the consultants. He said he favored annexation. “Our address is Issaquah,” L’Heureux said. “We want to be a part of it.” L’Heureux said 95 percent of the residents in his neighborhood of Brook-
shire, supports annexation. However, David Kappler of Issaquah said Klahanie would logically be viewed by any land use planner as the south east corner of Sammamish. His view was that annexation would stretch fire and police services too thin. Kappler thinks the logical sustainable server for Klahanie is Sammamish, not Issaquah, pointing out that there is only

Overlake Alumnae Panhellenic has been awarding scholarships since 1956. ■ Seven Eastlake students were recently recognized May 22 at the 2013 BioExpo, held at the University of Washington. More than 400 students participated in the event, which offered 13 categories. Senior Mihai Ciustea placed first in the journalism category. Second place winners included: juniors Kaitlin Daniels (drama/ dance); junior Ryan Meinhardt (molecular modeling) and junior Spencer Larson (web site). Junior Greg Lauer placed third
in molecular modeling, junior David Adil received an honorable mention in molecular modeling and junior Lucas Cary received an honorable mention in lab research. ■ Matthew William Hjelm of Issaquah has been named to the dean’s list at Norwich University for the spring 2013 semester. ■ Tony Elevathingal, the junior class president at Skyline High School, was honored by United Way for giving up parts of his weekends to help seniors on the Plateau. Elevathingal was one of several teenagers spotlighted during the annual Food for Thought Breakfast on May 23 as part of National Volunteer Week. The aspiring film student has donated Friday nights since last June to assist three elderly residents of Sammamish organize their attics and move boxes as a volunteer for the non-profit group Eastside Friends of Seniors. In addition, Elevathingal did a variety of routine maintenance for all three seniors, including painting, vacuuming and yard clean up.

Creekside students celebrate Leadership Day On Thursday, May 30 Creekside Elementary celebrated its second annual Leadership Day with more than 100 attendees. Sammamish Mayor Tom Odell along with Deputy Mayor Ramiro Valderrama and various other community members and educators were on hand. The event, which feature several musical ensemble and student-led presentations, showcased the latest Stephen Covey “Leader in Me” program introduced and implemented at Creekside Elementary in 2011. Funding of this program was through a grant from The Panda Group of Panda Express.
The annual Leadership Day is one of the requirements of the “Leader in Me” program in order to become a Lighthouse school. Creekside has been mentored by Mukilteo Elementary School, which recently obtained its Lighthouse status. There are only 55 schools in the nation with a Lighthouse status and 1,279 schools globally participating in the “Leader in Me” program. : Virgil Fox started the company in 1964; even as a young man, I loved “hands on work” and was proud to be a tradesman. I joined the company in 1973 and thrived in the environment of high standards and hard work. By 1979 I was half owner of the company, purchasing it in its entirety in 1983. I was dedicated to the value of quality service at a fair price and understood the importance of keeping every customer, since then I’ve expanded but maintained our deep commitment to integrity and quality work. : If it has to do with pipes and water, we have the skilled workforce to both fix ailing systems and install new systems. We work in old and new homes as well as in businesses and commercial environments – we are experts in fixing old systems. We’re not always looking to sell people something new; if it can be fixed we fix it. We offer a full range of plumbing services from sewers to hot water tanks. We help our customers save money by offering plumbing system tune-ups, which are continually growing in popularity because they save people on the cost of repairs by catching problems early. We’re very excited to announce that we have expanded and now service and install all types of heating, furnaces and air conditioning, too. We are committed to our customers and to our staff, provid-

On our website we have emergency water shut off videos to help people in times of emergency. It’s understandable that most people don’t even think of their plumbing until something goes wrong, we often get our best customers through our response to an emergency, we’re there and we fix the problem.
