Tacoma Narrows Airport runway reopens following rehab project Posted online Tues., June 18 Images Courtesy Pierce County The runway at Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor reopened Sunday following a 45day, $5.7 million rehabilitation project. The runway's width was reduced from 150 feet to the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) standard of 100 feet for airports of this type. The runway length remains at 5,002 feet. Similarly, the taxiways were reduced to 50 feet, down from a varied width of 75 to 120 feet. Cracks were sealed and repaired, and four inches of asphalt overlay created a new surface. The runway is now crowned at the center for improved drainage. Additional proj-

ect highlights include a new drainage system along the runway and connector taxiways, new runway markings and signage, and improved lighting. The runway has not been repaved since it was built more than 50 years ago. While the runway was closed for the work, Taxiway A was converted to a temporary runway. The airport was open from 5:30 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. during the work. "We know pilots will enjoy the renovated runway," said Pierce County Public Works and Utilities airport and ferry administrator Deb Wallace. we keep our airport in good shape so it can be used effectively for years to come. And by investing in a narrower runway, our long-term maintenance costs will be reduced." There is still more work to be done to complete the runway rehabilitation project. According to Pierce County officials, the runway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the night of Weds., June 19 before it resumes its normal 24-hour, seven-days-a week operation at 6 a.m. on Thurs., June 20. Work continues on Taxiway A2, which is expected to reopen this week. A section of Taxiway A will also be closed until Taxiway A2 reopens. Additionally, the runway will be open for about 30 days to allow the asphalt to cure. The airport will then be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for 10 working days so crews can groove the runway and apply the final markings to the runway and connector taxiways. This work is expected to begin in mid- to late-July. The $5.7 million price tag for the project includes $5.2 million in FAA grants, a $326,000 Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) grant, $135,236 in Washington State Department of Transportation Aviation grants, and $95,160 in county airport funds. The project was eligible for the DOE grant due to the drainage improvements that were made to enhance water quality. WHPacific designed the project, and is managing it with oversight from Pierce County Public Works and Utilities. Tucci and Sons, Inc. is the general contractor. Imports, exports lead 31 percent gain in Tacoma's container volumes Port of Tacoma officials announced Wednesday container volumes inched closer to the 1 million mark in May, posting a 31 percent gain year to date to 758,071 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Full containerized imports improved 45 percent year to date to 281,145 TEUs, while exports rose 38 percent to 213,482 TEUs. While container volumes continue to reflect the addition of the Grand Alliance and its associated carriers last July, the volumes also reflect positive year-to-date growth from established customers. Tacoma's international container volumes would be up approximately three percent on the year without the new volumes, according to Port of Tacoma officials. International container volumes are expected to continue showing double-digit monthly gains through June and July, but the increases will likely moderate in August. August 2012 marked the first full month of the Grand Alliance calling Tacoma. On the non-containerized side, year-to-date volumes continue to be mixed. Breakbulk volumes benefited from a large export shipment of agricultural equipment but continue to be down 17 percent to 86,201 short tons. Auto imports increased five percent to 63,625 units, reflecting stronger new car sales due to low interest rates and improving U.S.

Tacoma Freedom Fair Wings & Wheels returns July 6

Posted online Weds., June 19 Tacoma Freedom Fair Wings & Wheels returns to Tacoma Narrows Airport for its third year with activities for aviation, car and motorcycle enthusiasts alike. Wings & Wheels runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sat., July 6 at the airport, located at 1202 26th Ave. NW, in Gig Harbor. The event is part of the Tacoma Freedom Fair, which is produced by the Tacoma Events Commission. The Tacoma Freedom Fair & Airshow will take place on Thurs., July 4 on the Ruston Way Waterfront. "Bring your family to Wings & Wheels for a fun day of seeing historic planes, cool cars and motorcycles up close," said Lori Linenko, the commission's board chair and president. "You'll be able to see airplane fly-bys, meet pilots, and take a ride in an airplane or helicopter. Then take a walk through our car and hot rod show. And don't miss the Smoke-N-Thunder jet car as it races down the runway at nearly 300 miles per hour." The event also features food vendors, military displays, a beer garden, two jump castles and entertainment. Tickets are available in advance at FreedomFair.com or at the door. Tickets are $15 for adults 18 and older; $10 for seniors and military ID card holders; $5 for children ages 6 to 17; and free for children ages 5 and under. The airport will remain open for normal operations, with the exception of a three-hour airspace closure from noon to 3 p.m. A Federal Aviation Administration NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) alert for aircraft operators will be published in advance with the exact time of the airspace closure.

Learn more about Port of Tacoma at local farmers markets The Port of Tacoma will be farmers markets throughout Pierce County this summer to share more about the organization, such as its annual boat tours and public access sites. Port officials will set up information booths in the following locations: July 17 at the Fife farmers market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; July 25 and Aug. 1 at the Broadway farmers market in downtown Tacoma from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Aug. 3 at the Puyallup farmers market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Aug. 6 at the Lakewood farmers market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteer July 20 to remove trash from shoreline Join Citizens for a Healthy Bay on Sat., July 20 for the sixth annual shoreline cleanup along Marine View Drive in Tacoma. Volunteer from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to pick up plastic bags, Styrofoam, abandoned fishing nets and other debris on the shoreline and in the water between Tyee Marina and the Hylebos Bridge. Volunteers are welcome to walk, kayak or paddleboard. Last year, 15 cubic yards of material was removed. Snacks and lunch will be provided.
