Nataliya Vabishchevich, 35, was found dead in the entry way of her condominium in the 12700 block of Northeast 10th Place on Monday, and Bellevue Police say the death is a result of foul play. A co-worker who was concerned the victim did not show up for work or call in, arrived at her residence and found her dead in the entry way with the door left open, according to Bellevue Police public information officer Carla Iafrate. The call to 9-1-1 came in just before noon on Monday, but Iafrate said it was still uncertain when the woman died. Vabishchevich, a massage therapist at Eastside Life Chiropractic in Redmond
and Pure Chiropractic Center in Bellevue, was a native of Belarus and lived with her 10-year-old son. "She was the sweetest person you'd ever want to meet. She always had a smile on her face and always had something nice to say," said Dr. Eric Hansen, owner of the Redmond business where Vabishchevich worked two days a week for the last four years. She worked at the Bellevue business for two days a week, as well. Hansen added that Vabishchevich "literally had a following" of customers who were pleased with her massage work. According to the Eastside Life Chiropractic website, she was passionate about helping people achieve and maintain wellness through the art of massage. She was experienced in caring for all ages, from kids
to adults including top athletes, pregnant mothers and injury victims. The incident appears to be an isolated one, Iafrate said, with no immediate threat to the neighbors or the community. The road, which is located just off Northeast Eighth Street, is also home to a business park and Russian language school. Police have not released any further information about cause of death, but are asking anyone who witnessed or has any information regarding this incident to phone the tip line at 425-452-2564 or contact pdtipline@bellevuewa.gov.

At the beginning of the month, when he receives his disability check for $570, he indulges by driving a ways outside of the city to buy a campsite for a couple of days. CELINA KAREIVA, Bellevue Reporter been homeless and stationed outside BAM for many years, though he is quick to point out this hasn’t always been his life. “I worked for 27 years,” Dave proudly recalls. “This ain’t my life. I worked my butt off. I worked at the same company for 18 and a half years, and then started my own business, until I couldn’t do it anymore.” Dave now lives off a meager disabil-
ity check and the kindness of others. “I play my music and sports scores out here,” he says. “I try to give something back. If my batteries are dead, I have people who go out and bring me batteries. ‘We can’t have you without music,’ they say. ‘It ain’t right.’ The way I look at it, I’ve lasted longer than

Fire causes extensive damage to popular restaurant
Man finds a life on a downtown street
“Have a great weekend, boss,” says Dave from his post outside the Bellevue Art Museum (BAM), nodding every time somebody passes the busy walkway. A sign reads “Homeless Anything Helps,” and then a line below, Angels v. Mariners, nine rows demarcated for each inning in Friday night’s game at Safeco Field. Dave’s radio blares with sports news. Dave is something of an iconic figure in downtown Bellevue. He knows the well-dressed businessmen, the sales people, shoppers and countless others who either work or live in the downtown corridor. If he doesn’t, he’ll wave anyway. By his own account, he’s lived on the Eastside much of his life and has

Fire crews from Bellevue, Mercer Island, and Eastside Fire & Rescue battled a kitchen fire June 13 at Lil' Jon restaurant in the Eastgate area. The fire, reported at 1:39 a.m., sent a visible column of black smoke from the roof of the restaurant, a longtime local eatery. The initial call came from a janitor on scene. A language barrier made it difficult for dispatchers to decipher the exact nature of the situation so a single engine company was sent to investigate. Upon their arrival five minutes later, the initial reporting fire officer, seeing heavy smoke and flames from the roof, upgraded the call to a full response. By the time the fire was deemed under control 30 minutes later, the entire kitchen was heavily damaged by smoke, fire and the water used to extinguish it. Firefighters began attacking the fire from inside the building, isolating the kitchen area. Fire continued up the hood and duct exhaust system. Two 1 3/4 inch hose lines were needed to mitigate the flame spread. Ladder companies provided needed ventilation for the interior operations to continue. A total of 40 fire personnel were utilized at the scene. The building, in the 3000 block of 148 Avenue Southeast, has been at the location for many years. It is a popular place known for its breakfasts and meeting areas for groups, families and friends. There is no estimate of when it can return to business operations due to the extensive kitchen damage.The final damage estimate will likely be approximately $475,000. There were no injuries from either fire crews or civilians.

Bellevue College to construct new Health Science building Bellevue College plans to construct a new 70,000-square-foot building to house its growing Health Science programs. The college plans to break ground later this summer. When completed in approximately two years, the building will include modern laboratories incorporating the latest technology, providing an improved teaching and learning environment for students and faculty. The building comes at a critical time for BC’s Health Science programs, which have seen a jump in enrollment over the past several years. “In our programs, it’s extremely important that we’re able to provide the most modern and up-to-date training facilities, so our students can practice on equipment and in situations they will encounter when they go out and get jobs,” Kevin McCarthy, dean of the Health Science, Education and Wellness Institute, said. “This building will be integral to providing a first-rate education for our students.” Nursing, BC’s oldest Health Science program, dating to the college’s founding in the late sixties, will benefit from the new facilities. Included will be two dedicated nursing labs with 20 hospital beds and a five-room medical simulation lab suite. The new building will complement the expected growth of the Nursing program as the college prepares to launch a new Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree this fall. Other programs that will relocate to the building include: Radiation Therapy,
Radiologic Technology, Diagnostic Ultrasound, Neurodiagnostic Technology, Nuclear Medicine Technology, and bachelor’s degree programs in Radiation and Imaging Sciences and in Healthcare Technology and Management. In addition to the nursing facilities, the building will incorporate two radiology labs with x-ray machines, separate labs for radiation therapy, nuclear medicine technology and phlebotomy, and classrooms, administrative offices and meeting space. Construction will adhere to LEED Gold standards, the second highest rating, and will integrate environmentally-sustainable features such as a vegetation-covered living roof, use of recycled building materials and geothermal heating. Adding another building, the first new construction on campus since 2009, will also free up much-needed space in existing facilities. This space will help the college develop more bachelor’s degree programs and enlarge its course offerings. All design, site work and permitting has been completed, and a Request for Proposals has been posted. The $39 million project is state-funded and contingent upon pending legislative appropriation. The T building, as it will be known, will be located on BC’s 100-acre main campus, on a site close to Landerholm Circle, directly across from the S building and adjacent to the A building.

Students celebrate art at Sherwood Forest BY KEEGAN PROSSER

On Thursday, June 13, students at Bellevue's Sherwood Forest Elementary participated in a special unveiling ceremony for the new art tiles incorporated throughout the campus. The tiles, designed by students, parents and teachers, have been inlaid into cement alongside sidewalks and benches outside the building. The majority of them are in the cement amphitheater built during the school's remodel in 2007. The school has been working on the art installation since 2011 when the Bellevue Schools Foundation donated funds to begin the project. Led by art instructor Irene Smart, the students have been working on their tiles – which represent a number of themes including nature, family and culture – on and off for the past two years. Nick Ushka, 8, painted his tile with a combined pattern of the Union Jack and American flags. He said he chose this design because it represents his family history; while he resides in the United States, his grandmother lives in England. Other tiles on display beloved pets, flowers and abstract designs. The tiles were installed by Bellevue resident John Waddell, whose daughters, Jessica and Megan, previously attended Sherwood Forest. A former contractor with more than 25 years experience, Waddell said he volunteered to install the tiles because of his attachment to the school. "I felt it was a great way to leave my thumbprint in the community," Waddell said. He said he was encouraged by the heart that went in to making these tiles come to life – and wanted to bring that same heart

In addition to the student-made tiles, a series of tiles near the entrance of the school were painted by parent and teacher volunteers; many of these tiles feature the word "Welcome" in more than 30 different languages. Somerset to celebrate 50 years Bellevue's Somerset area will celebrate it's 50th anniversary Saturday with festivities from 2-6 p.m. in the community. Time for lawmakers to pass budget, go home
S
tate lawmakers have 231 million good reasons to agree on a new two-year state budget. Revenue forecasts predict an additional $231 million in revenue during this fiscal year and over the next two years. That money, plus $90 million in savings from fewer services being needed, could be enough to do a deal and go home. There could be an end to the Legislature’s special sessions after all. Or, as Sen. Rodney Tom so aptly put it: “We should just be able to say OK … let’s wrap up the people’s business and move on.” The Legislature is now into its second special session. If lawmakers can’t come up with a budget by the end of the month, the state could begin to shut down non-essential services. There’s no need for that. Both the Republic/Democrat coalition in the Senate and the Democrat-controlled House have been sparring over a number of other issues. House Democrats want to end some tax breaks. The Senate coalition wants to make changes in the such things as the state’s workers’ compensation system. Both houses are using these and other measures as trading chips to get an agreement on the budget. While discussion on such issues is justified, i isn’t as critical as making sure the state has money to pay its bills come July 1. Our lawmakers have spend enough time in Olympia. It’s time to craft and pass a budget and go home.
SPEAKING OF MONEY ... If the IRS didn’t have enough problems over improperly targeted conservative groups and throwing lavish employee conferences, now comes news the agency may pay its workers a total of $70 million in bonuses. IRS officials say the payments are required by a union contract. At a time when the government is slashing spending, bonuses – of any amount – are clearly inappropriate. – Craig Groshart, Bellevue Reporter

Hockey would be right at home here
S
ince Chris Hansen and Co. made their plans known to secure an NBA franchise for Seattle and build a state-of-the-art arena in SoDo, the passion from Sonics fans has been inspiring. Sports fans in our region have been able to imagine bridging the gap between football seasons with something more than another 75win campaign from our beloved-butbeleaguered Mariners. But recently, with the news Seattle is poised as a backup plan for the fledgling Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL, my own imagination started wandering. News of Seattle being in-play for a relocated NHL franchise is nothing new. It was part of the plan for the new SoDo arena all along. Most believed Josh Suman with our city’s decades-long history with the NBA and a pipeline of local talent and current NBA stars would make more sense for it to return first. But as the Stanley Cup Final has evolved (after a third overtime game in four games this series, Chicago tied things at 2-2 with a win over Boston on Wednesday) and caught my eye, the more sense hockey makes. It is no secret football is the King of our local sports scene. The Seahawks have such loyal fan support it has become part of their brand, as The 12th Man has been interwoven in the fabric of the team. Long before Largent, Holmgren and Beast Mode, the Washington Huskies had already planted the seed of the gridiron in the public psyche and even through their most downtrodden years have been an example of the love we have for football. When the season ends, most football fans are left in a malaise – disenchanted by the comparably finesse world of basketball and with nothing to look forward to but a baseball diamond rife with mitigated failure. But were the NHL to make a new home for itself in our Emerald City, that post-fall picture would look much different.
The most obvious element separating football from other team sports is the physicality. Even amidst a changing sports climate where head injuries are increasingly scrutinized, it is the collisions many football fans eagerly await. In hockey, they would find a kindred spirit. On the ice, there is certainly no shortage of bonejarring checks and in some ways, hockey can fulfill some of what football fans have lost with recent rules changes in college and the pros. Remember the days when breathing on a pass catcher wasn’t enough to elicit a penalty? It is understandable if you don’t, since the league has slanted rules so much in favor of high-powered offense. The NHL had to do some of the same after a pair of labor disputes had fans tuning out, but while they have certainly opened up the game and reduced the ability to muck up play, the general premise of contact has not been sacrificed. And the contact-nature of the game is only one of the reasons it would resonate here. Few players exhibit more passion than those in the NHL, where the pain of slamming bodies meets the grind of an elongated schedule (82 games in a regular season), and the character of the game, complete with “playoff beards” and caps tossed on the ice for a hat trick, would be a welcome break from the norm. Of course, we aren’t completely devoid of on-ice exploits in our corner of the world. The Seattle Thunderbirds have a history in the city and more recently Everett’s Silvertips have taken hold in the north. Only a smattering of local youth take part in the sport, but they would be perfectly situated as our resident know-it-all fans as soon as the first puck dropped. And of course, Seattle was the first to have its name engraved on Lord Stanley’s Cup, winning the title in 1917. As one of the fastest growing regions of the country, and with more development seemingly always in the works, our winters will soon enough be filled with one professional sport or another. DelBene gets a taste of a different lifestyle

ne of the newest members of the Millionaire Club in Congress is getting an idea this week of what it is like to be poor in America. Freshman Democratic Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, who lives in Medina, is dining on a food stamp-sized budget, which the federal government calculates is about $4.50 a day or $30 a week per person. It’s meant feasting on oatmeal, mac n cheese and PB&J sandwiches. Jerry Cornfield No Copper River salmon, filet mignon or even a Portobello omelette. It’s a menu she has not survived on since college when she and friends pooled resources to get the most out of their limited
food budgets. “Macaroni was a staple,” she said. It isn’t today for DelBene, a former Microsoft exec who is married to a current Microsoft exec and living in a Medina home likely larger than most soup kitchens and most definitely stocked with a greater variety of food. She’s smart enough to know that, as a Have test-driving the lifestyle of a HaveNot, she’ll invite ridicule from online commenters and skewering by political foes. They may deem it a cheap stunt. She figures she can’t raise awareness about hurdles encountered by the 1.1 million people on food stamps in Washington – and 47 million nationwide – until facing them herself, even if just for seven days. Twenty-six other Democrats in the House of Representatives are doing the same thing this month. “This is about starting a conversation,”

lier this week threatening to veto the House version if it reached his desk with the food stamp cut intact. Meanwhile, the Democrat-controlled Senate pared $400 million a year from SNAP in the version of the farm bill it passed. If the House passes a bill, the two chambers will need to reconcile their differences. Though DelBene is opposing the cut to food stamps, she could wind up voting for the bill because of other items contained in the 629-page legislation. She did vote for it as a member of the House Agriculture Committee. “There are definitely good pieces,” she said. For example, it preserves a work training program for food stamp recipients, which she requested. There also are provisions to help berry growers, dairy farmers and producers of specialty crops which populate her 1st Congressional District. It’s a decision she’s mulling over with leftover pasta, peanut butter and water. That’s about all she can afford this week.

I
n order to replace our ailing sewer line and crumbling driveway, we had to dig up the entire front yard. My husband rented an excavator for much of the dirty work. One of my favorite pictures is of my son sitting on his dad’s lap in the cab of the excavator sporting a grin a mile wide. When the machine wasn’t in use, I’d see neighborhood parents with their preschoolers Darcy Brixey inspecting the machine. Sometimes dads would look around to make sure we weren’t watching and plunk their kids in the bucket for a quick picture. Later, when the mixer showed up to pour the driveway and sidewalks, even more dads and toddlers came out to watch. Our house was the neighborhood magnet for several days. Young and old stood on the sidewalk to witness the clumpy, wet sludge pour into the forms.

He’s lived in half a dozen states, married twice and has a 16-year-old son, a life he says is richer than anything money could buy. “I know most people out here. I have room to put my sign up,” he says, gesturing toward the sandwich board. “I sit here, I like to talk to people, I like to learn about them, just like they like to learn about me. My thing is, I'm going to enjoy my life, I have nothing to be miserable about.” Through the years, Dave has developed a routine. In the parking lot behind him is his parked van, where Dave spends his nights. It's a recent purchase, made with money he's saved up. At the beginning of the month, when he receives his disability check for $570, he indulges by driving 20 minutes outside of the city to buy a campsite for a couple of days. Disability isn't enough for him to live off of, but Dave has saved enough through the years to buy a few cherished items, like his radio and an iPad to watch Netflix on when the crowds thin out. “I've seen this city grow. When I moved there were 7,000 people in Redmond. Now there are 27,000. I mean, I remember when Bellevue Square was just a strip mall. I watched all [these buildings] go up,” he says, pointing to the skyscrapers encircling him. In the meantime, Dave has his eyes set on the near future. He's looking forward to visiting his son and mom in Arizona over the summer. And Dave says he's now saving up for a set of rechargeable batteries. “I don't know where I'd be without this radio,” he chuckles, a deep, playful laugh. Used items take on a second life in Bellevue business Upcycle Goods BY CELINA KAREIVA BELLEVUE REPORTER
Darron Losse turns over a green iPad case, pointing out the faint imprint of old ads. In another life it was a print blanket, rolling out sheets of publication for the Seattle Times. He points also to a tote bag, its handles made of old seatbelts, its sack a Starbucks billboard that once sat atop Macarena Bakery in SoDo Seattle, 30 feet wide, 100 feet tall. “[Each of these] has a story to tell,” says Losse, who launched Upcycle Goods two years ago, a line of useful products, made from useless materials. "I think people like that they can see what it originally was,” he explains, fingering a red belt. “This was a fire hose. This was a billboard. They can look at it, and they know.” A former contractor at Microsoft, Losse often saw promotional products go to waste after a brand launch – hats, mugs and other signage. When a client one day approached him about the surplus, he did some research and discovered that at least some of it could be salvaged and repurposed as tote bags and lunch sacks. The upcycled items were a hit, and he began to think there may be more to the idea. “It’s something you don’t normally think of, upcycling something that is headed to the dump and making something useful out of it,” says Losse, whose corporate partners now include industry behemoths like Microsoft, Alaska Airlines and Starbucks. Operations are small at Upcycle Goods, based remotely out of Losse’s home in the Bridle Trails neighborhood. He works with a creative designer, an assistant and his wife, who helps manage the books. Then there are his daughters, he adds jokingly, whose peers, Losse says are his target audience. “They let me know if I’m on the right track or not,” he laughs. “I get

He wasn’t always aware of his environmental footprint. “It’s difficult for me to say, but coming from a [background] of promotion and marketing I haven’t always been [environmentally conscious]. This is my eco-payback,” says Losse. Most surplus items go to landfills if they aren’t immediately recyclable. But Losse recognizes a change in the way people are buying, not just an environmental consciousness, but an
interest in buying locally and in wellmade, ethically-produced goods. Losse applies that thoughtfulness to all areas of business. The company has been using JanSport’s manufacturing facilities, shut down when business went overseas, to produce some of their goods. “The life of these products doesn’t have to end if you think about it,” he says. “We take it, re-engineer it, put some lipstick on it [so to speak], brand it, and sell it in stores. People love the message.” Everywhere, Losse sees possibilities. Driving across 520 provoked yet another idea, he says. “It’s crazy. With the construction of the bridge, a lot of fire hoses are being used to wash the trucks and machinery. I can’t help but notice when I get on the freeway. I wonder what will happen when they’re done. Would we be able to turn those into an iPhone sleeve?” Losse muses.
Brainstorming ‘best ideas’ at Crossroads and Bellevue Square Bellevue’s Best Ideas forum, an effort by the city to engage the public in an update of the comprehensive plan, is coming to the Crossroads Shopping Center and Bellevue Square on June 21. The public will be able to engage in casual conversation with city planners and submit their own “best ideas” on-site. Ideascale, an interactive social media tool, presents posted ideas. Visitors to the site (bellevuesbestideas.ideascale.com/) can vote on whether they agree or disagree; or they can also post their own ideas. The ideas with the most "agree" votes will show
up at the top. One of the most popular ideas submitted so far points out the desire for welcoming public gathering spaces. The forum will be at Crossroads Shopping Center from noon to 2 p.m. The forum will move to Bellevue Square from 6-8 p.m. Participants are also eligible to win gift certificates from the Crossroads Shopping Center and the Microsoft Store. Refreshments will be served. The Best Ideas campaign will run through July 4.

Go Daddy picks Kirkland Go Daddy is expanding again with a permanent office in Kirkland, officials announced Wednesday, June 11. The company has signed a lease for a new 10,000-square-foot office at Carillon Point. Ten employees are already operating out of a temporary office at Carillon Point and they are set to move into the new space in October. The company also expects to expand the Kirkland operation to 20-30 people over the next several months, officials said.

Bellevue Biographies: The Matsuoka family The Matsuoka family farmed land in the Midlakes area, near Northeast 124th Avenue and the current site of the Safeway Distribution Center, growing strawberries, rhubarb and other crops. Tom Matsuoka was a very prominent and active member of Bellevue’s Japanese community. He was born in Hawaii, but he grew up in Japan. In 1919, he was sent to the United States after completing middle school. Matsuoka was very involved in the organization of the Bellevue Growers Association, the opening of the Kokaido (Japanese Community Hall) and was the founder of Seinenkai, a Japanese men’s group. After the Pearl Harbor bombing in 1942, he was taken away by the FBI for questioning. Like the other Japanese families in Bellevue at this time, the Matsuokas were interned for the duration of the war, first in Missoula, then Pinedale and then Tule Lake. They finally ended up farming beets in Montana. During WWII their land in Bellevue was farmed by Juan (Johnnie) de los Angeles. The family farmstead burned down during the war, while they were away, so they had no reason to immediately return to Bellevue. The Matsuokas did eventually return to Bellevue, with John Matsuoka farming in the Phantom Lake area until 1966. Heritage Corner is a feature in the Bellevue Reporter. Bridle Trails Park Foundation will host its annual "Party in the Park" on Saturday with horses, fun runs and lots of pancakes. The party is the foundation's biggest event of the summer and president Ken Hite expects hundreds of volunteers and at least 1,000 people from the community to come to Bridle Trails State Park. "It gets pretty crowded," said Hite. "It's one of several events we put on to get people to the park, get people enthused and get donations." The foundation pays half of the net operating costs to the state to keep the park open. "Bridle Trails State Park was on the closure list," Hite said. "The state was going through budget woes like they are today and to save money, they were looking at closing the park." The community formed the nonprofit Bridle Trails Park Foundation and agreed to fundraise about $40,000 on an annual basis. In turn, the 120-plus-year-old park will remain off the state parks closure list and the community is free to enjoy 28 miles of horse and pedestrian trails, horse show grounds with three arenas and a picnic area. Party in the Park, which generates a "good chunk" of the park's revenue, will include a 10K run, a 5K run, and a 5K and 10K walk, said Hite. Hungry athletes or regular park goers are welcome to a $5 pancake and bacon breakfast with coffee or juice while The Black Pearls entertain. "Let me tell you, it's a lot of bacon to cook," Hite laughs, who enjoys riding his two horses and hiking with is dogs at the park. Because of the high volume of guests and need for horse trailer parking, the foundation has provided a shuttle service that will run from the Central Park Tennis Club to the park every 10 minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The club is located at 5820 125th Lane NE, Kirkland.

Kasner has chaired the Bellevue Parks and Community Services Board and has served on the West Lake Hills Citizen’s Advisory Committee as well as the South Bellevue Community Center Advisory Committee. Bellevue Police arrested 38 burglars in the last six months Over the last six months the Bellevue Police Department has arrested at least 38 burglars. The captures can be contributed to the community and the police department working together to nab theses suspects, police officials said. “Our alert community members calling when they see someone/something suspicious, providing good descriptions and the quick response from our police officers have led to the apprehension of several burglary suspects," said Bellevue Police Chief Linda Pillo."This is what community policing is all about. Daytime burglars are hitting the region hard and Bellevue is no exception. Patrol and motorcycle officers flood the area when the 9-1-1call comes in and have been successful in catching the burglars in action. Many times the burglar is caught running out of the house with stolen items in hand. Of the 38 arrested this year, 24 of those were interrupted during the commission of the crime either by a witness or the victim’s themselves. Last year, during the same time frame, 36 burglars were captured. BC awards degrees to 578 grads from Bellevue Bellevue College held its 46th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, June 14, in Seattle’s KeyArena in front of the largest audience ever, conferring more than 2,600 awards to the Class of 2013. This marks the first time in BC’s history that it has staged the ceremony at an off-campus location, with an estimated 4,500 people in attendance, a significant increase over last year. “This day was all about our graduates, and we wanted them to be able to share this important milestone with as many family members and friends as possible,” said President David L. Rule, Ph.D. “Holding commencement in KeyArena allowed us to have a ceremony that was as inclusive as possible.” In all, the college awarded 2,609 bachelor’s and associate degrees, certificates and diplomas to 2,481 students. Graduates from the Bellevue area numbered 578, accounting for the largest share of any city in the region. The ceremony included a speech by graduate Safae Zniber, an international student from Morocco who graduated with

Jack Surendranath, an instructor and former dean of the Science Division who has been with Bellevue College since 1975, spoke on behalf of the faculty, and Rule delivered the keynote address. This marks the fifth year in which BC has conferred bachelor’s degrees in Radiation and Imaging Sciences, and the third class for Interior Design grads. About three-quarters of this year’s class were made up of graduates who received associate degrees designed to prepare them to continue their education at four-year colleges and universities. In recent years, BC has transferred more students to these institutions than any community college in the state. The graduating class included students as young as 15 and as old as 65. The average age is approximately 26. A total of 436 students graduated with high distinction (3.75 grade point average or higher) and 410 students with distinction (3.5 to 3.74 GPA). Thirty-eight students completed their studies with perfect 4.0 averages.

Seven ducklings rescued from Clyde Hill storm drain Firefighters from Bellevue Fire Department Station 5 help rescue seven ducklings June 15 after the birds got stuck in a storm drain. SJ Murphy and her daughter, Fiona, 11, were walking their dog when they came discovered the duck's plight. Concerned for the ducklings' safety, Murphy called upon Lt. Paul Davison, firefighter Aaron Wong and engineer Sean Allen to help the birds. After following Murphy to the drain, at 86th Avenue Northeast and 27th Place
Northeast, the firefighters removed the storm drain cover and retrieved five of the ducklings. However, the remaining two moved farther into the storm drain. In order to retrieve the remaining ducklings, Wong and Allen used a hose to flush the birds toward Davison, who grabbed them and placed them in the box with the others. While this was Davison's first experience with ducklings, he said the animal rescues are a standard part of the job.

Larry Royce has always believed in mental toughness. It was a staple of his track and field teams at Port Townsend High School, where he was the head coach nearly 40 years ago, and was
at its height at the 1976 Class 1A state meet, where his team claimed the team scoring championship. The runner-up that day was a team he would not only become a part of, but in some ways come to define: Bellevue Christian School.

“I knew [then-BCS coach] Mike Strong and we ended up talking to one another,” Royce said. “He indicated he was resigning from his position and encouraged me to apply.” Royce took Strong’s advice, accepted a position at Bellevue Christian beginning the following fall and in the decades since, has become a fixture around the Clyde Hill campus. But beginning next school year, that will change. Royce announced recently he will retire from both his teaching and coaching duties when the current school year ends, leaving behind a legacy that includes championships on the field, court and track
and countless lives influenced in the classroom. He joins longtime boys basketball coach Mike Downs (who remains a teacher at Three Points Elementary) in his resignation from the athletic department this year after a tenure that has spanned parts of five decades. For the past 16 years, Royce has shared the track with boys head coach Ed Sloan. “It was never about him,” Sloan said of his longtime colleague. “It has been such a positive environment and that has brought the success we’ve had.” That success at Bellevue SEE ROYCE, 15
Bellevue cracks list of top prep football dynasties Only two prep football programs from Washington made the MaxPreps.com list of top dynasties since 2003, and they should come as no surprise. Bellevue was the highest ranked team from anywhere west of Texas, coming in at number 10 on the list with its eight state titles and 127-8 overall mark. The Wolverines were just behind Warren Central from Indianapolis and one spot in front of Mission Viejo from California. Skyline, winners of four of the past five 4A WIAA titles, came in at number 20 with an overall mark of 116-16 since 2003. The Spartans lay claim to seven total state championships including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 and came in on the list in front of storied St. Thomas Aquinas from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Wolverines and Spartans did not meet in 2012, as Bellevue faced Trinity to open the season and Skyline played out-of-state foes from Utah and Idaho. But the two will open the 2013 season against one another in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at renovated Husky Stadium. The list was compiled by MaxPreps based on wins, state championships and strength of schedule. De La Salle, which had a 151-game winning streak snapped by the Wolverines at CenturyLink Field in 2004, was the top team on the list, followed by Don Bosco Prep (New Jersey), Southlake Carroll (Texas), St. Xavier (Ohio) and Colerain (Ohio). Euless Trinity, which Bellevue beat in 2012 to open the season, came in at number 12 and Katy, another former Bellevue foe from the Longhorn State, entered the rankings at number 12. No other team from Washington or Oregon made the list and only seven of the 25 teams came from the West Coast.

Christian has included five Class 1A girls state championships, including a three-peat from 2010-12, nearly three dozen individual and relay state titles and recognition as a National Coach of the Year from the National Federation of State High School Associations for 2010. Before BCS, Royce spent time at South Kitsap, Pilchuck and Port Townsend high schools before beginning what would be come a 37-year tenure in Clyde Hill. “He is kind of Mr. BCS, Mr. Viking,” Sloan said. “Everything he has ever done has been for the betterment of this community.” Current AD Mark DeJonge, who’s wife attended BCS and played soccer and was a state title winner in the hurdles on the track team, echoed Sloan’s sentiments in regard
to Royce’s selflessness and said in the seven years he has served in his position, Royce simply refused to leverage his previous tenure as AD in the decision making process. “In a lot of ways,” DeJonge said. “He was a mentor for me.” Retirement will take Royce and his wife to their children and grandchildren in familiar locale in Spokane, where many of the coach’s fondest memories have been made at neighboring Eastern Washington University and the 1A state meet. A sonin-law who coaches in the area has already begun recruiting Royce to get back on the sidelines at a local middle school and he said woodworking and a project Hot Rod will also help keep his time filled. While the promise of retirement is an enticing one, Royce said the roots he and his family have laid at BCS will always remain, and he plans to come back each year for the school’s invitational track meet.” “It’s become like a big family here,” he said. “I’m going to miss what I’m doing.”
The 13U squad from Bellevue Baseball Club picked up a tournament championship in Lynden recently, and finished as the runner-up in the same tournament’s 14U division. Coach Jesse Moon’s 13U team won its division and also played in the 14U bracket, finishing in second place after making the title game.

A sunset walk on the longest evening of the year and a kid-friendly, Saturday-morning tour on July 6 offer chances to see the birds of summer when they’re most active and abundant at Marymoor Park in Redmond. Hosted by Eastside Audubon, both walks are free and open to the public. In early summer, birds like American Goldfinches and Cedar Waxwings are still colorful and singing in the woods, ducks like Common Mergansers may be swimming with their young on the slough, and, with luck, a Short-eared Owl may even be spotted over the meadow at twilight. Birdsong continues for hours on Friday, June 21, the long first evening of summer. Walk the Audubon BirdLoop with Eastside Audubon president and master birder Andy McCormick to look and listen along the slough, in the woods, and at the meadow. This leisurely and level two-mile walk will start at 6:30 p.m. at Parking Lot D and end at 9 p.m. or when the birds call it a night. (Parking
is $1.) Bring binoculars and a snack. All ages welcome (17 and younger with parent). A family birding walk on Saturday, July 6, will give people a chance to see birds when they are most active and fun to watch in the morning when the woods and meadows are still cool and fresh. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and go at a kid’s pace until 11 a.m. (you can leave the walk at any time). Leading the group will be Brian Bell, a professional nature guide and co-author of Birds of Washington State (Lone Pine). The walk starts at the Audubon BirdLoop kiosk in the southeast corner of Parking Lot G at Marymoor. (Parking is $1.) Binoculars are recommended, as are snacks, liquids, and sunscreen. Eastside Audubon is the National Audubon Society chapter active in Bellevue, Bothell, Carnation, Duvall, Issaquah, Kirkland, North Bend, Redmond, Sammamish, Snoqualmie, Woodinville, and unincorporated East King County.

Willing to wager that crooner Ricky La Rue is just what the casino needs, Ruby offers the ultimate jackpot: a suitcase full of money. There’s a big chase scene and some other surprises
two hours. It would have been beneficial to cut quite a few scenes to make the MOVIE movie faster paced and a more enjoyable length since there were a handful of dull, unmemorable moments. Nonetheless, the digital visual effects were amazing. Although the action was exciting, it could have been better integrated throughout the film; instead, most of the action took place at the climax of the movie. Although it was generally enjoyable, the film was very serious and could have used more humor. Even though the movie was based on the original Superman story and had some adaptations, I thought the movie lacked a sense of uniqueness. It was also missing an emotional message, which prevented it from becoming a truly powerful film.

‘Man of Steel’ soars into theaters
Equal parts superhero and science fiction film, “Man of Steel” is a fairly standard action movie with little new or added appeal. Henry Cavill starred in the film as Superman, in a role perfectly cast - even if his acting was not particularly notable. Superman’s love interest, Lois Lane, is played by Amy Adams. Unfortunately, the film did not develop their romance, and thus they lacked chemistry on screen. Aran Kirschenmann Instead, the film focused on Superman’s relationships with both his real father (Russell Crowe), and his adopted father (Kevin Costner). With the help of the two father figures, Superman worked to find himself and his place in the human world. In my opinion, the film was somewhat hard to follow at times. Beware of Teatro ZinZanni’s show “Lucky in Love” - you may just fall head-overheels. Now in its 15th year, ZinZanni is celebrating its anniversary with typical flair, as well as some Vegas-style casino sass. The show is directed by Joe De Paul (who also stars in it) and hunky, Swedish performer-director Tobias Larsson. The eclectic all-star production also features funky songstress Francine Reed, juggler Sergey Krutikov and former Ringling Bros Clown Peter Pitofsky; Seattle-native trapeze artists Ben Wendel and Rachel Nehmer perform a sexy pas de deux in the air that makes for a spectacular climax. One of the simplest, yet most brilliant moments, is when De Paul takes a stab at a King Kong impression. First, he hands out paper airplanes to audience members “for later,” then, he strips down to
his boxers. With his under5-foot stature and belly pushed out, De Paul beats his chest amongst a city made out of cardboard boxes, as the dramatic music from the 1930s film plays in the background. As he climbs up on a box, clutching the beautiful maiden (an oversized chess piece with a Barbie head stuck on top), the audience howls as the paper airplanes start flying. As if the show weren’t enough of a draw, there is, of course the food and drink. Teatro ZinZanni Executive Chef Erik Carlson has designed an all-new menu with entree choices of gourmet Beef Wellington, Northwest Salmon, or Pasta Primavera (gluten and dairy-free options available). Master mixologist, Jamie-Paul Rizzo creates handcrafted cocktails sure to whet one’s whistle (try a spiked “Hula Hula” for a tropical treat). The Bellevue Mosque, also known as the Islamic Center of Eastside, will hold its annual open house and barbecue for the public from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at 14700 Main St. in Bellevue. “Our open houses serve as valuable opportunities for people from different communities to get together and learn about each other," said Ahmed Nadeem, a co-organizer of the open house and an Information technology consultant by profession. "It will especially useful for those not acquainted with local Muslims and Islamic beliefs and practices, but also to enjoy delicious barbecue and good conversation.” The open house will feature separate, parallel programs for women and for men. For those needing wheelchair access, the men’s prayer hall has is accessible through a wide ramp. The women’s prayer hall is on the second floor and can be accessed by stairs only, however accommodations can be made for women in the men’s prayer hall. The Islamic Center of Eastside (ICOE), also known as the Bellevue Masjid (mosque), is the first permanent mosque established in the eastside of Seattle.
Walk to benefit dogs Dogs and their people will be walking at Bellevue's Downtown Park on Saturday, June 21 as part of Walk for Old Dog. The event is sponsored by Old Dog Haven, which provides safe homes for senior dogs age 8 and up and rate abandoned or homeless. The organization cares for more than 200 dogs at a time and vet bills are approximately $40,000 a month. All money raised at the walk will be used to care for these wonderful senior dogs. Participants can register and/or form a team online at www.odhfundraising.org.
Bellevue paramedic honored A Bellevue firefighter and paramedic who saved three heart attack victims in one month has received a “Triple Crown” award from King County Emergency Medical Services. The paramedic, John Tetzlaff, will be the first recipient of the new award. It was presented Thursday. King County EMS established the Triple Crown award to recognize a genuine milestone, three cardiac arrest “saves” in one month involving the same firefighter/paramedic.
Kindering exec honored Kindering Executive Director Mimi Siegel was honored June 12 with a Legacy Award by the Alliance of Eastside Agencies (AEA).The honor recognized Siegel’s 35 years of service to infants and children with special needs. The award is given by AEA to an individual who has had an exemplary career in bettering the lives of people, and have gone beyond the call of duty and has been dedicated and innovative in approaches to solving the challenges presented by the needs of children and families. Julie Anne Keeney
Julie Anne Keeney, Age 64, loving wife of Merle Keeney, and wonderful mother of Nate and Grant Keeney, died from cancer on June 5, 2013. Julie was raised in Oregon City, OR, and then lived throughout the U.S. as her husband served in the Navy and as a business executive. Finally, a resident of Bellevue for the past 22 years, she worked for the Bellevue School District for 19 years. At the International School and Interlake High School she treasured her time with the kids and was always involved with the theater. She loved her family and was a friend to everyone. She is survived by her husband Merle, sons Nate (Debbie) and Grant (Julie), two sisters, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents (Edward and Dolora McDonald) and brother (Terry McDonald). A memorial service will be held at South Bellevue Community Center, 14509 SE Newport Way, Bellevue,WA at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. Consequently, to address springtime flooding, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 straightened and deepened the Sammamish River and created the transition zone. Through agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, King County operates and maintains all Sammamish River flood control facilities, including the transition zone. The transition zone is not sustainable in its current condition and configuration. In order to ensure the transition zone’s capability to pass flood flows, County crews must perform intensive and costly maintenance including mowing, removing riverside plants and sediment removal. These maintenance practices degrade habitat and water quality and conflict with the Endangered Species Act, as well as federal, state and local goals to protect ecological functions and species. The Willowmoor project is multi-purposed: Ensure the transition zone’s long-term capability to continue providing essential flood control for the Sammamish River and Lake Sammamish, while reducing maintenance costs and improving water quality and habitat conditions. This goal will be accomplished by modifying up to a half-mile of the river channel in and upstream of the transition zone, and utilizing undeveloped King County land adjacent to the west bank of the river channel. Modifications could include widening and realigning the channel with more natural meanders, or possibly constructing a second “habitat friendly” channel with meanders and pools adjacent the flood control channel. The existing weir or a similar replacement and the reconstructed channel will continue to maintain summer lake levels and control lake outflow. Other features may be included to enhance habitat and public access. Habitat diversity and conditions are expected to continue to improve as a result of natural ecological and river processes once the project has been completed. The first phase of the project – planning and preliminary design – is funded by the King County Flood Control District and the city of Redmond, and will be completed in coordination with King County Parks, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, and lakeside property owners. Funding for final design and construction will be pursued following completion of this first phase, and will likely include Flood Control District funds combined with federal and state grants.

A new project to address several longstanding flood control and habitat issues on the Sammamish River at its outlet from Lake Sammamish in King County’s Marymoor Park is the focal point of a County-sponsored meeting set for June 27. The outlet from Lake Sammamish into the Sammamish River is marked by a shallow concrete weir and a straight, rock-lined channel, 200 feet wide and extending 1,500 feet downstream from the weir. This area, known as “Willowmoor,” is also referred to as the “transition zone” where the lake becomes the river. These transition zone features are specifically designed to pass flood flows quickly downstream, and to help maintain summer lake levels for recreational uses, while still allowing for upstream fish passage, including salmon returning to the Issaquah Hatchery from their time in saltwater. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30-8 p.m. at Clise Mansion in Marymoor Park, 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy. At the meeting, staff will discuss the history of the transition zone, what problems this Sammamish River project is trying to solve and how interested citizens can stay involved and updated as the project design and construction moves forward.
