Port to consider Heavy Haul Corridor extension Posted online Tues., June 18 Image Courtesy City of Tacoma The Port of Tacoma Commission is expected to meet this week to consider permanently extending the Heavy Haul Corridor along State Route 509. The Tacoma Tideflats transportation corridor was established eight years ago when Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a bill authorizing the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to enter into agreements with port districts and adjacent jurisdictions to identify, manage and maintain short heavy haul industrial corridors for the movement of overweight, sealed containers used in international trade, according to documents prepared by Port of Tacoma staff. Later that year, the Port of Tacoma, the City of Tacoma, and WSDOT partnered to establish the "Heavy Haul Corridor" along State Route 509 between milepost 0.25 (in the vicinity of East D Street) and milepost 3.88 (in the vicinity of Taylor Way). Trucks using the corridor must apply and pay a $100 monthly fee or a $1,000 annual fee to the state to use this state highway heavy haul corridor. Last year, Schnitzer Steel asked WSDOT to temporarily extend the corridor to milepost 5.7 (vicinity of Norpoint Way NE) in order to include their facility, according to documents prepared by Port of Tacoma staff. The request required State legislative approval and language was added to the supplemental transportation budget, which passed in

March 2012. The extension was for the 2011-2013 fiscal biennium and required an amendment to the

Learn more about 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay

Posted online Mon., June 17 Pierce County residents with questions about the 2015 U.S. Open Championship at Chambers Bay are invited to attend an in-district meeting of the Pierce County Council on Thurs., June 27. The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Environmental Services Building, located at 9850 64th St. W, in University Place. The meeting will feature a presentation by the United States Golf Association's (USGA's) on-site championship director Danny Sink, former Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg, and county officials, who will discuss issues such as the USGA's decision to select Chambers Bay as the site of the 2015 U.S. Open, volunteer

opportunities, ticket sales, logistics for spectators to visit the site, and other planning under way for the championship. "The U.S. Open is one of the premiere sporting events in the world, and it is coming to the Pacific Northwest for the first time in its history," said County Councilmember Connie Ladenburg. "This is a great opportunity for residents and business owners to come learn about the championship, including the timeline for preparations." The U.S. Open is scheduled to take place June 15-21, 2015. The USGA is planning on total attendance of 235,000 spectators, volunteers, media, vendors, and staff. original 2005 agreement between WSDOT, the City of Tacoma, and the Port of Tacoma. In August 2012, the Port of Tacoma Commission approved the temporary extension, which expires at the end of this month. Earlier this year, Schnitzer Steel worked with WSDOT and successfully lobbied the House and Senate to make the extension permanent, according to documents prepared by Port of Tacoma staff. However, the Port of Tacoma, WSDOT, and the City of Tacoma must authorize the amendment. Additionally, commissioners are expected this week to consider requests for continued environmental cleanup work on the Hylebos Waterway and a new 20-year operating agreement with Tacoma Rail. The Port of Tacoma Commission is scheduled to discuss these issues during its meeting on Thurs., June 20 at 12 p.m. at The Fabulich Center (Room 104), located at 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. A copy of the agenda is available online at portoftacoma. granicus.com/GeneratedAgendaViewer.php?view_ id=4&event_id=93. Commission meetings are streamed live online at https://www.portoftacoma. com/webstreaming and archived for later viewing.

WSDOT reopens I-5 Skagit River Bridge

Photos Courtesy WSDOT Both directions of the Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge opened to traffic Wednesday morning after a portion of the bridge collapsed into the Skagit River near Mount Vernon on May 23. "We've asked a lot from the Washington State Department of Transportation, the contractor and their subcontractors, and they delivered," said Gov. Jay Inslee, who toured the bridge site Tuesday. "I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this happen, and those who have been patient to see it through." With the temporary bridge comes temporary traffic changes. Each direction of the temporary span will be reduced from two 12-foot lanes with 3-foot shoulders, to two 11-foot lanes with 1-foot shoulders. The speed limit will be reduced from 60 to 40 miles per hour between the College Way and State Route 20 interchanges, a distance of roughly a half-mile on each side of the bridge. All oversized or overweight trucks must exit and use the current detour route.

"Roughly 99 percent of the car and truck traffic will be able to cross the I-5 bridge again," said Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Secretary Lynn Peterson. "This will dramatically reduce the congestion through Mount Vernon and Burlington, and hopefully bring some

much-needed normalcy back to our communities." Crews worked through the weekend to jack the second span into place and install all of the bridge deck. Crews also completed the installation of expansion joints and installed barriers, new signs and road striping. WSDOT has announced Crews worked that Max J. Pierce County to begin major sewer replacement project Posted online Mon., June 17 Image Courtesy Pierce County The public is invited to an upcoming open house to learn about Pierce County's replacement of the sewer main along Brookdale Road in Parkland. The open house will be held on Thurs., June 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Elmhurst Elementary School community room, located at 420 133rd St. E. A short presentation will be made at 6 p.m. about the project and construction schedule. An interceptor is a sewer line that receives wastewater from multiple collector pipes and transports it to a wastewater treatment plant. The county will replace about 5,000 feet of pipe with a 72-inch diameter interceptor pipe along Brookdale Road from Golden Given Road East to A Street South. The work will begin in midto late-July, and is expected to last until October 2014. The existing pipes are 30-inches and

8-inches in diameter. "The nearby interceptor pipe along 133rd Street East and Brookdale Road is nearing its capacity of 7 million gallons per day," said Pierce County Public Works and Utilities Sew-

er Utility engineering supervisor Jane Vandenberg. "It's also heavily corroded, and it's located in an area affected by high groundwater levels. Groundwater seeps into the sewer pipe, reducing its capacity to carry wastewater. By installing a new interceptor pipe along Brookdale Road, the county will be able to increase wastewater capacity. Also, the new interceptor will be in an area less affected by high groundwater." About 750 feet of new 36-inch diameter pipe will be installed along A Street South to connect the Brookdale Road interceptor pipe to the existing pipe at 133rd Street East. Detour routes may be in place periodically throughout the project. There will be local access when detours are in place. The county will work with property owners to minimize impacts. More information is available online at piercecountywa.org/brookdaleinterceptor.
