Farmer’s market comes to Tunes @ Tapps By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer
The annual Tunes at Tapps concert series at Allan Yorke Park is growing to an entirely new level this year with the addition of a farmers style market. This season’s lineup is expected to be the biggest yet for Tunes at Tapps according to Special Events Coordinator David Wells. Introducing food, produce and craft vendors is a way to satisfy the community’s desire for a farmer’s market while also adding substance to the annual event. The addition of vendors to the festivities will also help stimulate the local economy and fill a gap noticed in concerts past. Many people bring picnic dinners to the concerts, he
said. By providing onsite options, participants can show up, grab dinner and enjoy the show. They may even find local treasures and produce to take home with them. “I’m excited. This is going to bring a whole new aspect to our Wednesday concert series. In my mind, it’s all about keeping stuff local. The money spent at the concerts will stay here,” Wells said. Wells’ goal is to enlist 10 to 15 food, craft and farm vendors. Handfuls of people have already shown interest. Among them is Papa Johns, who will offer pizza by the slice. A team of Bonney Lake city employees will sell hotdogs and popcorn, the proceeds of which will benefit the yearly Shop with a Cop event – a tradition in which local school kids are taken on a Target shopping spree during the holi-
days by Bonney Lake police officers. Tunes at Tapps runs every Wednesday after the Fourth of July until the Wednesday before Labor Day. The first concert in the series will feature Spike and the Impalers on July 10. Other performers include Danny Vernon, Sonic Funk Orchestra, The Beatniks, The Coats, Junction City and Folsom Prison. The series will conclude with The Great Pretenders on August 28. The Beatniks, featuring Bonney Lake police officer Daron Wolschleger, will play on August 14. All shows begin at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free but throughout the duration of the event, concertgoers are encouraged to bring clothing and food donations to benefit Lions 4 Kids House and the Bonney Lake food bank.

An unknown man attempted to lure a Bonney Lake teen into his van Thursday, according to a police department press release. At approximately 6:35 a.m., a 14-year-old girl was walking down Angeline Road toward her bus stop when she noticed a slowtraveling van turn around and pass her twice. Growing increasingly scared, the girl began walking quickly toward a friend’s house. At the corner of 110th Street Court East, the van pulled within feet of her. She reported the driver looked directly at her and said, “I’m going to get you.” The girl ran and hid until a friend’s mother driving past her location stopped to assist her. The driver of the van fled in an unknown direction. The van was described as deep red in color, tinted windows, and in decent condition. The driver was described as a heavy-set white man with blue or green eyes, light facial hair and pale complexioned, aged in his 40s or 50s. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. Bonney Lake police will be on high alert and on the lookout for intoxicated boaters in two weeks. The Bonney Lake Police Department’s Marine Services Unit will patrol Lake Tapps June 28-30, paying special attention to signs that vessel pilots
may be bringing the party behind the wheel. The emphasis is part of national campaign “Operation Dry Water,” organized by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. The campaign began in 2009 with the purpose of reducing boating fatalities involv-

ing alcohol. A 2012 U.S. Coast Guard study found that while alcohol only contributed to 8 percent of boating accidents overall, it contributed to 17 percent — nearly a fifth — of boating fatalities. The environmental stressors of piloting a watercraft — including exposure to sun, wind, noise, vibration and motion — can intensify the effects of intoxicants, according to an Operation Dry Water fact sheet. Additionally, alcohol’s effect of increasing blood f low to the extremities makes drinkers more susceptible to hypothermia and cold water shock. “We on Lake Tapps have definitely seen accidents and deaths that alcohol can be attributed to,” Bonney Lake Officer Daron Wolschleger said. Boating under the influence can be a tricky area for law enforcement. In terms of public education, Washington state law is clear that boat operators must remain within the legal limit of .08 blood alcohol content. However, open containers of alcohol are technically allowed: the law only expressly prohibits them on vehicles if they’re traveling on roadways. Combine that concession with a crowded boat on a recreational lake during a beautiful summer day, and the result can be a mistaken perception of lax enforcement. In terms of enforcement, an Operation Drywater member agency out of Virginia noted that prob-
able cause can be hard to spot, because boats tend to travel slower than cars and on a right-of-way with fewer marked travel restrictions. That’s why, during the emphasis period, police carefully examine all boating violations for a possible link to alcohol. “So if we see a boat that doesn’t have its ski flag up while its towing skiers, or we see an 8 year old without a child life jacket, those aren’t the most serious violations by themselves,” Wolschleger said. “Or we may just be conducting a safety inspection. But while we’re checking on that, we will look for signs of impairment from the operator.” Police boats will pull up close to the side of vessels and, as they make contact with the operator, will pay close attention for signs of intoxication such as glassy eyes or an apparent smell of alcohol. Signs of possible intoxication will lead to field sobriety tests and a portable breath test. If the operator is found to be intoxicated, he will be brought under arrest for further processing at the police department. Police will make an effort to release the boat to a sober passenger or store it ashore in Allan Yorke Park, Wolschleger said, but it could potentially be impounded. A boating under the influence conviction can result in 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

City implements ‘micro can’ garbage pick-up By Daniel Nash Staff Writer
Facing a garbage service delinquency rate of 10 percent, the Bonney Lake City Council has implemented a cheaper service option to incentivize more citizens to sign up. The ordinance, which passed the consent agenda unanimously May 28, represents the most comprehensive revision of the city’s sanitation code since its original writing in 1977.
The ordinance allows residents to choose a “micro can” garbage pickup option at less than $14 per month, according to DM Disposal’s most recent rate sheet. At 10 gallons, the micro can is now the smallest and cheapest available receptacle for curb-side pickup. The code revision is a bet on the power of positive economic incentives to encourage residents to comply with the law. “(Fines are) not a practi-

there are also legal questions surrounding the lien system: “Once we (the city) stopped doing our own billing, the city attorney questioned whether we could legally issue a lien against a property that hadn’t signed on for garbage pick-up.” Punitive measures against residents who did
not sign up for garbage were more straightforward prior to 2004, when the city transferred the responsibility of garbage billing to its contractor, Leaf said. Before then, water, sewer and garbage services were packaged into one bill. “(The city) paid the water last,” Leaf said. “So if a cus-

rcadia recently published a new book in the Postcard History Series, written by Donald M. Johnstone and titled “Mount Rainier National Park”. According to Johnstone, the name Mount Rainier was first used in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy. Vancouver saw the 14,410 foot mountain from where he was in the Port Townsend area and named it after his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier. Before that time, it was called Tahoma by local Native Americans. Mount Rainier was declared a national park in 1899. It boasts a diverse wildlife and the largest glacier system in the continental United States. The park consists of several different forest zones including alpine, subalpine and subtropical rain forest. Though currently dormant, Mount Rainier is a 500,000-year old active volcano. Enjoying the intense beauty of the park is generally considered safe, but it doesn’t come without risk. It last erupted sometime between 1820 and 1894, according to the National Park Service. In addition to volcanic eruptions,

Upper Nisqually Valley”. It was during that time Johnstone was introduced to the local stories and postcard images of Mount Rainier. He began researching the national park by studying private postcard collections but he quickly realized the necessity to dig deeper if he wanted a complete image of the park’s history. The South Pierce County Historical Society and the Mount Rainier National Park archives served as additional resources. “While researching my first book, I met a number of people who had stories about the park. I also discovered Rick Johnson at Ashford Creek Pottery and Gallery, in Ashford, and his amazing postcard collection with a Mount Rainier theme. The most pleasurable part of the process was … the opportunity to seek out people who had stories to tell and cards to share,” he said.

The program provides significant improvements in the protection, use, development and restoration of more than three miles of shoreline and the water quality of the White River in Buckley. Buckley is one of nearly 81 local governments that have completed updates. About 150 cities and counties statewide are in the process of, or soon will be updating or crafting, their master programs under the state’s 1972 voter-approved Shoreline Management Act. Shoreline master programs are the

He suggested the book may be used in a multitude of ways. It would make a great reminiscent gift for dad or grandpa, but it can also be used as a guide for new adventures in the park. Many of the photographs and captions include milepost markings, which makes it easy to compare historical views with contemporary ones. The law requires cities and counties with regulated shorelines to develop and periodically update their locally tailored programs to help minimize environmental damage to shoreline areas, reserve appropriate areas for water-oriented uses, and protect the public’s right to public lands and waters. Buckley’s process brought local interests to the table to work collaboratively. The shoreline master program process began with a thorough inventory of existing land-use patterns and environmental conditions and was completed with consultant support. Cascade Water Alliance, representatives from the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, Buckley citizens and city elected officials all contributed.
YELLOW FLAMINGO: At 8:32 a.m. June 2, an officer was dispatched to 99th Street Court East in reference to a theft from a vehicle and resulting damage. The complainant reported a theft from his work truck while it was parked in front of his residence. He had parked it at 9 p.m. the night before, and when he picked up the newspaper outside his door the next morning, he noticed a yellow flamingo in his yard. He looked around his property to find the back doors of his truck open, and a large tool bag inside missing. The officer noted damage that suggested the thief unsuccessfully attempted to drill the lock and ultimately gained entry by prying the doors open. The officer provided a theft inventory form and photographed the damage. ELUSIVE: At 12:46 p.m. June 5, an officer on patrol on Sky Island Drive observed a blue quad bike traveling in the opposite direction. The driver was wearing a helmet with no visor. The officer turned around and activated the patrol car’s emergency lights to initiate an emergency stop. The driver of the quad looked over his shoulder and continued on the road. Pursuit continued at 40 miles per hour down Sky Island to Rhodes Lake Road. The driver turned into a gravel parking area and onto Rhodes traveling eastbound. He turned onto Falling Water Boulevard, which ended in a dead end roadway. The driver continued onto an old gravel road, bypassing a large concrete cylinder blocking the right of way. The police patrol vehicle could not continue past the cylinder and an area check assisted by other officers did not turn out the suspect. VANDALISM: At 6:55 p.m. June 5, an off-duty officer reported his personal vehicle had been struck in the windshield by a bottle. The officer had been traveling north-
bound on Sky Island Drive when an occupant of an approaching blue Jeep threw a bottle out of the sun roof, striking the officer’s car in the windshield. The officer turned around and caught up with the other vehicle, which pulled to the shoulder of the road. The officer pulled up alongside the car and, speaking from his open window, identified himself as a police officer and informed the driver he would be filing a police report about the incident. There was no damage done to the windshield and he did not wish to file charges, though he wanted the incident documented. The on-duty officer handling the report called the occupants of the Jeep and advised them what they had done was illegal. FOUND CELL PHONES: At 9:35 a.m. June 6, a city employee turned in two found cell phones. One was a black Verizon Spectrum, and the other was a black Sprint cell phone; they were both found in Allan Yorke Park, at the dike expansion area and life jacket kiosk, respectively. The phones were placed into the evidence room as found property. RECKLESS DRIVING: At 12:46 p.m. June 6, an officer was dispatched to a single car collision on 74th Street East. The caller advised the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control, crashing into nearby woods. The officer found the vehicle and contacted a juvenile girl identified as the driver. She was uninjured other than scratches on her legs from walking in the bushes after exiting the car. She said she was driving to the park alone at 50 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone when she lost control and crashed into the bushes. The officer observed tire marks in the roadway that showed the vehicle had lost control. The marks showed the car had hit mail boxes and a yard waste bin before coming to a stop. The homeowner who had called in the incident recounted the accident to the officer and mentioned he saw a male passenger exit the vehicle. The driver said she lied about having a passenger because she was afraid she was violat

Biweekly pickup is not a currently available option for Bonney Lake residents, but the language was added in anticipation of new waste contract negotiations to take place this summer, Leaf said. The code revisions also included updates to bring city law in line with state and county law in areas such as garbage incineration.

time, about 5 percent of Bonney Lake households were not signed up for pickup. In late 2012, the rate ballooned to 10 percent, prompting DM Disposal to approach the city council in December. DM sent out 500 letters to unsigned households that month. The meaningful rate of noncompliance is tricky to pin down. DM calculates the rate from residential addresses that aren’t signed on for service. At a March
5 workshop discussion of the issue, Leaf reported a majority of non-compliant households were vacated residences. At the same meeting, he also reported that the number of noncompliant households had gone down to 350. Concerning legitimate unsigned households, the prevailing theory throughout council discussion of the issue has been that said households are opting to take their waste to the dump; possibly out of a perception that it is cheaper to do so. “In actuality, one-can

Smart phones and special homes Another Father’s Day has passed and my kids have not placed me in a home for wacky fathers. I consider that a parenting success. Children, particularly daughters, have unique relationships with their fathers. I call it “the voice.” I hear it all the time from the young women who work in The CourierHerald office. When I do something they don’t like, which is often, I get the voice. I am sure Dennis Box all fathers with Editor daughters have heard it. “Gee, Dad, are you drooling? How many fingers am I holding up? Where is your wallet?” The voice comes when they don’t want to openly yell at me because they know the real world has passed me by years ago. That is when I hear the “olden days” term – you know like the 1950s and ‘60s – just yesterday in my world. My daughter, Katy, gave me a stupid smart phone, which I can’t use and I hate. It was her attempt to make me up-to-date. My simple little dumb phone was great. It worked and I didn’t have to push a bunch of buttons that don’t do anything rational. Spread the word and the peanut butter too School is out but, thus far and due to the lack of sufficient resources, the Bonney Lake Summer Meals program will not be available this summer to serve meals on the Plateau to youth. I verified this with Bonney Lake Community Resources Director Stew Bowen Thursday after noting it on their website. A couple possible options have presented themselves. One was CenturyLink announced its Backpack Buddies Feed the Children Food Drive, which took place during the week of June 3-7. This program helps local food banks feed kids over the summer when they are out of school and don’t have access to school breakfasts and lunches. For every pound of food collected, CenturyLink will donate up to $1 and for every $1 in cash/check donation received, it will donate up to $6 for the Bonney Lake Food Bank. Stew said that he won’t know if the summer program can be saved until the money arrives from CenturyLink. Thank you to all who participated in that food drive and let’s keep our fingers crossed. Of course, one of the best assets of the city of Bonney Lake is its employ-

ees. Police Chief Dana Powers challenged fellow city staff to a little contest to collect peanut butter, jam, jelly and money. In that short time, they did an excellent job and came up with 175 jars of peanut butter, 125 jars of jelly and $819 in cash/check donations. They brought more than 600 pounds of PB&J. Others around the community pitched in, too. This will get the summer off to a start, but only a start. Without the summer program, the new challenge is how to provide youth in need with easy-to-prepare, nutritious foods all summer long. The kids and the food bank need your help so that peanut butter and jelly can be sent home with other food for the kids to self-serve, like the backpack program. Here are a few suggestions. These are kid-
friendly foods that require little or no preparation: Crackers Single Serving Boxed Cereal/Oatmeal Beans and Franks (pop-top can) Fruit Cups Beef Stew (pop-top can) Snack Mixes Raisins (snack size boxes) Unrefrigerated Jell-O Cups Vegetable Cups Juice Boxes Sunflower Seeds Cereal Bars Unrefrigerated Pudding Cups Granola Bars Unrefrigerated Chocolate Milk Unrefrigerated White Milk Why is peanut butter so important? Peanut butter does not have to be refrigerated or cooked, so it works well for even the homeless in our community. It has a long shelf life. It is kid friendly; children can self-serve while mom and/or dad are away at work. It is a good source of protein, folate (a B-vitamin), niacin, phosphorus and magnesium. It meets most religious restrictions on food. Everyone knows that peanut butter

Letter I never have liked the saying “I told you so,” only because it doesn’t feel good to be proven wrong. With that in mind, before I joined the Bonney Lake City Council, in early 2003, I warned our leaders of dealing with the Weyerhaeuser/ Quadrant group. When I became a City Council member, I tried my best to persuade my fellow council members that the city was in the driver’s seat, regarding the former WSU forest, and they listened and were ready to vote down Weyerhaeuser/ WSU/Quadrant’s amendment, to the city of Bonney Lake’s comprehensive plan

The Bonney Lake Comprehensive Plan is a guide to land use, development, city facilities, utilities, annexations and quality of life. Knowing it would not pass, Quadrant/ Weyerhaeuser/WSU pulled their proposal at the last minute. Quadrant’s (Quadrant is the real estate arm of Weyerhaeuser) WSU forest proposal made serious changes to the city’s comprehensive plan, such as single family zoning expanded to seven to nine units per acre. This type of land use change will forever change a city and communities and should be decided by the City Council members, who we vote in, not a developer. After my council tenure had ended Quadrant/WSU
brought their proposal once again to the city. I was a citizen, once again, speaking at City Council and Planning Commission meetings, to remind council members and planning commissioners of the major flaws in the proposal and the devious practices of Quadrant towards cities and citizens alike. Many of my concerns that I shared with the council and commission have been articulated by Ms. Carter, in her recent columns in The Courier Herald. I also predicted that there would never be a YMCA built on the few acres of the forest given to the city, in the proposal. The land that was to be deeded to the city was made up of mostly wetlands and storm ponds/ drainage ditches for the entire 149 acres. The rest of

pass the WSU proposal. Both Randy McKibbin and Katrina Minton-Davis are now City Council members. Using logic and quality of life as a guide, I cannot fathom how Mr. McKibbin and Ms. Minton-Davis could both pass such a proposal. The WSU/Quadrant proposal was flawed and biased, in favor of WSU/Quadrant, and has forever negatively changed our city’s guide to zoning and its future. Randy McKibbin, unfortunately, is running unopposed for his council seat again, in the upcoming election. This is a travesty, given Mr. McKibbin’s pro development voting record. The new 2013 Quadrant proposal to install a traffic light, was a deal breaker to their previous proposal, so at the last minute WSU/Quadrant

the “free” land that the city was to receive were the treed areas that outline the forest, that has and will, camouflage the overbuilding and destruction of the forest. The city’s lack of water and sewer capacity did not deter the council and planning commission from passing the proposal. The need for more of these resources have and will continue to raise the current citizen’s water, sewer and garbage rates, along with other taxes, all for the benefit of WSU/Quadrant’s plans for overbuilding and destroying our city’s quality of life. Then City Council member Laurie Carter was the only no vote. I pleaded with Planning Commission Chair Randy McKibbin and fellow commissioner, Katrina MintonDavis, who both voted to

removed that part of the proposal that was passed. Now they’re back, and guess what? I told you so. They want to place that same traffic light they said they would not do last time. We will not get a YMCA anywhere near the former 149 acre forest. So much for keeping their word. Citizens of Bonney Lake, the future of our community is in your hands too. Educate yourself on our city government, including City Council and Planning Commission members, etc. that have power to make foolish decisions that we and our children will literally pay for. blotter FROM 4 ing the terms of her intermediate license and because she did not want her parents to know she was riding with the particular male. The officer advised her that, because of her age, she was not violating her intermediate license. Cascade towing was called to remove the vehicle from the bushes, and the girl’s mother was called to the scene. The girl was issued a citation for reckless driving. ARGUMENT: At 4:52 p.m. June 6, an officer on patrol in Allan Yorke Park observed a man and woman in a heated verbal argument. The woman appeared to be trying to keep the man from approaching the boat launch. The patrol officer and another officer separated the two and talked with them to ascertain the situation. The man reported he was upset because he saw his girlfriend with another man at the park, and he was trying to walk to the boat launch to confront the man. The woman reported she was trying to keep him from confronting the other man. Both reported no physical confrontation had taken place. The officers determined no crime had taken place and both people were released. HIT AND RUN: At 10:02 p.m. June 7, an officer was dispatched to a hit and run at Walmart. The victim reported he had just been told by a witness that his vehicle had been hit. The car had fresh damage behind the driver side door. The victim pointed to a car parked a few spaces away and said he was told that was the suspect vehicle. The officer observed fresh damage to the front right bumper, and noticed green paint from the hit car. The owner was an employee of the store. The officer contacted her and she said she did not report the collision because she did not know how to. She said she was still learning how to drive the vehicle and had just obtained her driver’s license that day. The woman was given an infraction for having no proof of insurance, and she was cited and released for hit and run of an unattended vehicle. SHOPLIFTING: At 4:08 p.m. June 8, an officer was dispatched to Safeway in reference to a shoplifting incident. A loss preven-
tion officer had detained one man and had chased a second out of the store. The store officer reported he had observed the men enter the east entrance of the store and stop in the deli section. They looked around before entering the liquor section. He observed the escaped man select two bottles of liquor and conceal them in his sweatshirt. Both men walked toward the checkout stands and stopped at a soup display before the escapee ran out the door. It appeared the detained man was going to run, but he turned around and walked toward the cash registers. The detained man told the officer he and

his friend had stopped into the store to purchase alcohol and, while they were at the soup display, he suddenly said he was going to steal the bottles and ran out the door. The man said he had no prior knowledge of his friend’s intent to steal. He provided his friend’s name and contact info. A records check on the detained man revealed an arrest warrant issued by Federal Way police. He was arrested without incident for later transfer into FWPD custody. The store officer said they would not pursue criminal charges against the detained man, but he would be trespassed for life. The police officer attempted to
contact the escaped man by phone with no initial success. He later called the officer and advised he had intended to purchase the alcohol, but decided to steal it when he realized he did not have enough money. While being chased, he had stashed the bottles in a bush along state Route 410. He said he planned to return the alcohol to Safeway. The officer checked the reported stash location with negative results, and later called the man to ask if he planned to return to the store. There was no answer, and the officer left a voice mail explaining he would be issuing a criminal citation for theft. NOT FOR RENT: At 9:21 p.m.
June 8, three officers were called to a North Island Drive East residence in reference to two females trespassing on the property. The caller, who was the owner of the house, said a neighbor had advised him of two women who appeared to be moving into the home. The homeowner said he had not authorized anyone to move into the house, and it was not in condition for occupation as it was currently being remodeled. He confronted the women, who moved their things back into a truck and waited for police to arrive. An officer contacted one of the women, who said she had been told by her stepfather that the home was avail-
able for rent, and that she could enter from the back door. The other woman was there to help. She said she had already established a utilities account with Puget Sound Energy, but she had not paid any rent yet. The homeowner was unfamiliar with the woman’s stepfather or the man he had claimed owned the house. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing missing. It was determined there was no intent to commit a crime. The officer informed the women they would be trespassed from the property, and that the incident would be recommended for forwarding to the prosecuting attorney for review.

Carter FROM 6 is delicious. Here are some facts: 1. The average American child will eat 1,500 peanut butter sandwiches by the time he or she graduates from high school. 2. Consumers prefer creamy peanut butter to chunky by a 60 percent to 40 percent ratio. Children and women prefer creamy, and most men opt for chunky. 3. Americans eat about three pounds of peanut butter per person each year, totaling about 500 million pounds... enough to cover the floor of the Grand Canyon. 4. Peanuts are not a nut. Botanically classified as legumes, peanuts contain properties of
both the bean/lentil and tree nuts. So, as we wait to see if the summer program is a go due to the CenturyLink match, let’s work on an alternative plan and go with the self-serve method. Please donate. Another option is you can plan on dining at the Snack Shack at Allan Yorke Park from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday as you enjoy a concert, sports, boating, the new shoreline part of the park, walking trails, playground or skate park. All profits support the Bonney Lake Food Bank. And there will be a food bank fundraiser Hot August Nights Bonney Lake Style August 24, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a bike/car show. Registration is $10. There will be a raffle (tickets starting at $1), hot dog eating
contest (registration $3 to participate) and of course, non-perishable food and cash donations gladly accepted. Contact Sheri at 253230-0982 or nhra652@q.com for more details. I have attended in the past and they have more vehicles to view at this car show than at Bonney Lake Days. I am partial to any Chevy Nova that might be on display, like the green one in the NASCAR commercial (like the one I drove in high school). That was a really long time ago. Bring your car, your memories and join the fun for a good cause. I also asked Stew for an update on the federal grant for a new food bank in Bonney Lake. Due to sequestration, that grant, like many others, is on hold. The Bonney Lake and Prairie Ridge food
banks depend on donations to pursue their vision of creating a hunger-free environment. Donations come from individuals like you and me, groups, corporations like CenturyLink and organizations. Sponsors are listed on the food bank website. It takes a village. It can be a one-time donation of cash or food, a grant, an organized food or fund drive or volunteering of time and skills. There are countless ways that members of this community can contribute year round in making our community a better place. Together, we can provide hope to our hungry neighbors. You can drop off donations at 18409 Veterans Memorial Drive, or call (253) 863-4043. Please help feed the kids this summer. Thank you for all you do for your neighbors.
corner FROM 6 anonymous (we will call her Theresa) used the voice on me this morning because I couldn’t figure my stupid phone out. “Maybe they have classes for people like you,” she said in a very sweet voice – the voice. I have it from a well placed source that God can’t figure out his smart phone. “How come nobody told me how this thing works? Where’s the directions? I get to know things, you know.” I bet no smarty pants girl uses the voice with him. Some guys have all the luck. Next Father’s Day I may find myself in a special home for fathers who can’t properly operate an annoying smarty phone. I bet every father in there would have a daughter using the voice on him. Push that button dad. Everyone knows that. Yeah … everyone but me and God.

hen CenturyLink offered to match $6 for every $1 donated to the Bonney Lake Food Bank, plus $1 for every pound of food donated, Bonney Lake City staff held a contest between the three (3) main City buildings: Public Safety, Public Works/Sr. Center (old city hall), and Justice & Municipal Center, to see who could donate the most. The Public Works/
Sr. Center contributed the most food, with the Justice & Municipal Center coming in a close 2nd. Between the 3 buildings, the City staff donated $875 cash and over 700 pounds of food. The City staff food donation was mostly in the form of peanut butter and jelly to help support summer lunches for needy Bonney Lake school age children.

SR410 & Main St Intersection Project Update
T
he final intersection improvement work at SR410 & Main St./Sky Island Dr. will not be undertaken until early July. This is primarily due to a subcontractor that will not been able to deliver the computerized controllers for the stop lights until then. In July, the new traffic signal computer, poles, and
signal lights will be replaced and the old equipment removed. Then the final pavement grinding and new overlay with lane markings will be finished. Most work will be accomplished at night to avoid traffic disruption.
T
he new Franciscan Medical building at the corner of SR410 and Main Street (9230 Sky Island Dr) is now open for business! The medical clinic features family and internal medicine, onsite lab and pharmacy, Franciscan Prompt Care (open 7 days a week), and complimentary Wifi and parking.

Show gardens with fluorish My home town of Enumclaw is hosting a tour of eight local gardens Saturday to benefit our hospital care van. The tour includes garden art vendors and entertainment and I’ll give a seminar called “Shortcuts to a Show Garden.” You’ll learn tips on how to dress up a landscape with little time or money. For more information on tickets go to www.enumclawrhf.org or phone 360-802-3206. My TV show, “Dig In Seattle,” airs Sunday at 7:30 a.m. on channel 10. Or watch online at diginseattle.com. Now here are the best shortcuts from some of the amazing gardens you’ll see on the tour:
Creative containers
In the Matson garden the owner recycled and grouped silver-hued garbage cans, coal scuttles and tin tubs to create a vignette of up-cycled elegance that looks like it came from France. You are welcome to take photos during the garden tour and use them for inspiration for your gardens.
Show stealing plants
Sometimes all a garden needs is a new character to ramp up the drama. You’ll find unusual trees, flashy flowers and shrubs that only the owners may be able to identify in these gardens. Black Lace elderberry, Golden Lantern magnolia, Gold Lime Light currant, a Peaches and Cream maple and deep blue gentian are a few of the specimen plants you’ll see on the
www.blscourierherald.com covers like saxifrage and lamiums that help light up the shaded areas and also provide a carpet for a collection of garden rooms. You’ll see golden Marianne Binetti foliage as an accent in my blue and yellow garden Columnist and as a border in the woodland walk. I use tour. Seeing plants in a garden pulmonarias instead of a lawn rather than a row of nursery pots is a better way to imagine to surround an ivy gazebo – how these garden stars will not only do these groundcovers thrive in dry shade, they perform in your garden. flower and also hide mole Easy-care cover holes. Come see my brick wall Weed-blocking ground- with colorful tile inserts – I

may not have blue poppies in bloom, but I do have a “forever blooming” blue poppy tile displayed on the wall.
Just add water
From bird baths filled with floating flowers to giant ponds of koi and trout, you’ll see new ways of using water in the garden at every stop on this tour. A water feature can turn any garden into a show place – and will make the birds happy as well. Copyright for this column belongs to Marianne Binetti.
Unkillable artwork
At the Roc Nob garden and welding studio you can explore five acres of outdoor sculpture surrounded by unusual specimen plants. An easy shortcut is to remove an ugly or sickly tree and replace with some focal point art. “Primitive-futuristic” outdoor sculptures incorporating stone and metal make this a garden that will transport visitors to a whole new world.
“When my babies arrived early, I knew we were in the best hands.”
Flattering fine foliage
In the La Penske garden there are mountain views and cold, cruel winds. By choosing drought-resistant plants with colorful leaves the landscape comes alive with color but is low on maintenance. It is the deft arrangement of the burgundy barberry, golden spiraea and deep purple smoke trees that light up this country garden. Arranging plant material for maximum contrast is a shortcut useful in container gardens as well as in large-scale landscapes. You may not need to buy new plants to put this tip to work. Just rearrange the colorful plants you have with a new eye toward foliage contrasts.

Every visitor will fall in love with the “cowboy” theme garden on the tour but you don’t have to be into rustic Western collections to make your garden a work of art. You’ll be inspired by the tiny details like how orange and peach flowers work well with the aged patina of recycled containers. Pick your own color palette and echo it throughout your garden for a landscape that is cohesive and personal. Display your personal collections outdoors during the summer months to give a patio a cozy living room flair. From pottery to antiques, use what you have to decorate your outdoor space.

Protect your joints now and avoid pain later By Dr. Michael G. Miller For The Courier-Herald
As the weather around Puget Sound turns sunnier and warmer, many of us will be taking part in any number of outdoor recreational activities the area has to offer. Whether you’re out for a hike or bike ride with the family or playing an organized team sport, taking care of your knees, hips and other joints will go a long way in ensuring you can enjoy all of sum-
Dr. Michael Miller
mer’s fun activities. The human body has an incredible capacity to repair itself, but our joints are surprisingly delicate. When the cartilage that cushions the bones in your joints wears away, it does not grow back. Thinning

cartilage can contribute to osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis. It can be a painful and often debilitating condition. But, lucky for us, there are some simple ways we can protect our joints now to avoid possible painful discomfort later. One of the simplest things you can do to reduce pressure on your body’s joints is control your weight. When you walk, each knee bears a force equivalent to three to six times your body’s weight. For a person weighing just 150 pounds that means your knees are taking a 450-pound or more beating with every step. You can certainly lessen the pressure on your joints by being
lighter on your feet. Try exercises that are low-impact. Running on hard pavement, playing tennis on concrete or skiing over lots of moguls puts your joints under a lot of stress, particularly the knees. If you run on a regular basis, try running on a treadmill or trading out one run a week with something a little more low-impact like swimming, biking or tai chi. This seems like a nobrainer, but being able to avoid injuries to your knees and other joints will greatly reduce your risk of osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that even 10 to 20 years after a person has injured the anterior cruciate ligament or menisci of the
knee they have a 50 percent chance of developing arthritis in that same knee. So weekend warriors be forewarned – sitting behind a desk all week and then playing sports for several hours on the weekend puts you at higher risk for injury which means higher risk for arthritis later on. Remember, the better toned your muscles are the less likely you are to suffer an injury. Building up your muscles around joints makes them act as a shock absorber and enables them to spread the stress of any physical activity across the entire joint. Moderate weight lifting, swimming, yoga and Pilates are all nonimpact forms of exercise that firm up your joint’s
muscles without compromising the cartilage. Finally, be skeptical of specialized nutrients like shark cartilage, glucosamine and chondroitin which are popular supplements marketed to improve the health of your joints. While they may sound like a cure-all, most medical specialists agree that they offer limited health benefits. The bottom line is taking care of your knees, ankles, hips and other joints is a lot like taking care of your car. With proper care and regular maintenance they will all last a lot longer. Dr. Michael G. Miller is an orthopedic surgeon with Franciscan Medical Clinic in Enumclaw.
