No parking in plans for light rail station Sound Transit may partner with city on parking, bicycle storage is included By Mary L. Grady

About 75 Islanders came to hear and see about the proposed design for the to-be-named Sound Transit light rail station on the Island. The station, already referred to as the Mercer Island station, will be set between 77th and 80th Avenues S.E., south across S.E. 80th Street from the Park-and-Ride lot. Dozens of Sound Transit officials were in attendance to answer questions and describe the many design features of the project to community members. The rail bed and station plat-

form will be constructed in the existing center lanes of Interstate 90 right-of-way. In order to construct the station within the highway lanes, new HOV lanes are to be constructed on the outer lanes of the main line. The HOV center lanes will be shut down by the end of 2016 for the duration of construction, planned to end in 2023. Passengers will enter and exit along 77th Avenue S.E. or 80th Avenue S.E. At both ends of the station platform, stairs, an elevator and escalator will move people up or down the 25 feet from the street to the platform level. At street level will be a large, glass enclosed ‘head house’ that will surround the passengers as they enter and exit. It will rise 45 feet from the platform level. That portion of the design is enclosed with

glass and will be lit. “It is to be open and light,” architect David Hewitt said. “At night it will become a beacon, like a lantern. It will make for an ‘expressive’ entrance to the station.” In Sound Transit terms, the Island station is smaller than some, yet will be 80 feet longer than a football field from end to end. Some details about the design are still in flux to allow community members to weigh in. The selection and placement of art is yet to be determined. The platform below street level will mostly be open, but will be partially covered with an awninglike structure. Since the platform will sit inside the existing highway right-of-way, tall acoustical walls will be constructed on either side. The public area above will be limited, but will include ticketing and bike storage. The intention is to make the facility “a proud moment for the community,” Hewitt said.

Part of the public process will involve naming the station. Islanders will be encouraged to weigh in on what they think would be a good name, although Mercer Island would seem to be the only name that would make sense. Engineers have worked for years on design to allow trains to travel safely across moving expansion joints on a floating bridge. It is a complex undertaking. The rail crossing of Lake Washington will only be the second one ever designed in the United States. Testing of the water crossing included a weight test. Engineers brought in a logging truck onto I-90 weighted to simulate the load of an in-service rail car. Soon, two train cars will be sent to a testing facility in Pueblo, Colo., where a test track has been set up to simulate the Lake Washington crossing. When the project is complete, Sound Transit officials expect 2,000 boardings each day on the Island by the year 2030. The segment running

Their speech was followed by a rousing clarinet duo by Jimmy Abrahamson and David Stewart, playing Duet No. 2 for Two Clarinets by Henri Lazarus, which earned them a standing ovation. One of the highlights of the night was the faculty speech by MIHS band director Parker Bixby. His speech, “Don’t lie to your parents,” highlighted what he tells his students every Friday as they leave his classroom. “Don’t lie to your parents; they love you,” he said, with members of the band echoing his words. He explained that as wonderful and exciting as the day is for the graduates, it’s more exciting for their parents, families and teachers who have worked for 18 years to get them to this point.

Nearly all of the questions regarding the station from Islanders were about parking. Council vets nonprofit development at Mercerdale Park I-90 tolling update By Mary L. Grady

editor@mi-reporter.com

The Mercer Island City Council discussed two proposals that would involve construction on the edges of Mercerdale Park at their mini-planning session on Saturday, June 8.

Thrift Shop expansion The first piece is a proposal to enlarge and upgrade the city’s wildly successful Thrift Shop, whose proceeds help fund the city’s Youth and Family Services staff and programs. The Thrift Shop, at the corner of 78th Avenue S.E. and S.E. 34th Street grosses some $800,000 per year. The shop is run by volunteers and one paid city staffer who unload, sort, price and sell the goods and manage the mountains of trash generated by the store donations. The city had preliminary plans drawn up to out a plan to increase the selling space of the shop by separating collection and sorting facilities in the former pool building as well as provide for more parking and better access. The proposal includes a new access lane for donation drop-offs along 78th Avenue S.E. that would end in a cul-de-sac and turn around on park land next to the play area. A new building east of the existing facility would house the drop-off, sorting and staff areas. The changes would result in at least 3,000 square feet of additional sales floor. The proposed cost of the

project is $2.5 million. The city is considering how best to finance the construction of the changes. Some changes to the existing building may trigger the need for seismic upgrades and fire suppression equipment. The proposal would also require an expansion of the existing parking area by 20 spaces. The site is also plagued by stormwater runoff issues. The city hopes to use the store proceeds to make Youth and Family Services self-sufficient and eliminate the subsidy for the department from the city’s general fund. After debating the design of the new additions, the City Council said that the city should move forward to study the proposal further.

Youth Theatre Northwest considers two sites Youth Theatre Northwest will need a new home after construction begins in the megablock around Mercer Island High School. Both patrons and management of YTN have long been looking for a site to rehome and expand their drama programs for youth. Preliminary plans presented to the City Council on Saturday took the existing size of the site at the old North Mercer gym, a 14,000-square-foot space, and expanded it to a 24,000-square-foot space in or near the Town Center.

The city of Mercer Island and other cities throughout the Eastside are partnering together to stop tolling on I-90. Deputy City Manager Noel Treat writes a periodic update on what the city and the coalition have accomplished so far. By Noel Treat

A newer and larger Youth Theatre Northwest is proposed for the northwest corner of Mercerdale Park on the old recycling center site and Bicentennial Park land. A site at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center is also being discussed. Plans call for three performance spaces. YTN would raise the money for the project. Both sites would require an arrangement for the nonprofit to use city land. City Manager Rich Conrad cautioned that the city and YTN are a long way off from selecting a location or deciding on how the site would be managed or leased. YTN must raise money privately for the project. “We have more study and work ahead of us before the Council is ready to make a decision on which site to make available to YTN,” Conrad said. “We also have much to consider about the relationship the city will have with YTN — whether it would be as a tenant, lessee, building manager or

owner/financier.” The Council discussed the projects on the merits of what was appropriate for each site, whether it be size, parking availability and marketing concerns. But most agreed that for a theater, the Town Center site would be ideal for its proximity to complementary activities such as restaurants and the number of people who live nearby. At issue at both sites is the competition for parking. And finally, YTN would need to raise private money for construction. A space visible in the Town Center would make it more appealing to potential donors, said Manny Cawaling of YTN. The Council, concerned about the other Free projects in the works as estimates well as impacts on neighbors and parking, was split on whether to move Custom slipcovers on the Eastside since 1985 forward to select one site or the other. The Council • Custom designs • Personal service agreed that more study • Quality workmanship • Washable fabrics was needed.

It would include three performance spaces: a 250-seat theater, a 100-seat ‘black box’ theater, and a flexible ‘light box’ space that can open out for outdoor performances or events. YTN boosters support the old recycling center site at the northwest corner of Mercerdale Park for the site, but are also reviewing the possibility of siting a new performing arts center adjacent to the Mercer Island Community and Event Center. Initial designs made for the MICEC in 2003 called for a performing arts center, but it was later dropped due to cost concerns.

In April, the city cosigned a letter with King County, Seattle, Bellevue and others asking the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) to work with the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC), the region’s planning agency, on a broader study of tolling and its impacts, which would include a study of alternative revenue options. The city has received a response to that letter, signed by both WSDOT and PSRC, indicating they are working on a draft scope, timeline and funding plan for such a study. The city will continue to advocate that the PSRC study be well coordinated with the Environmental Impact Statement process regarding I-90. Mayor Bruce Bassett, Councilmember Mike Grady and the deputy city manager met with federal officials this week in Washington, D.C., to discuss the legal and policy concerns regarding I-90 tolling. The Federal Highway Administration provided assurances that they are well aware of the issues that the city has raised, have not made any decisions about I-90, will complete an objective legal review of the state’s proposal, and will provide oversight to the state’s EIS process. FHWA sees merit in the regional study being proposed to the PSRC.

he 378-member class of 2013 is the largest Mercer Island High School graduating class since 380 students received their diplomas in 2008. The class of 2013 represents a 27-student or 8 percent increase over the 351-member class of 2012 and a 13 percent increase over the class of 2010. If there is any doubt of the increasing pressure on the facilities of the Mercer Island School District, look no further. Yet, despite their years in the increasingly squeezed hallways of the Mercer Island School District, our new graduates have persevered and flourished. Eschewing the use of lockers since middle school, they have made it in time to class despite the mere five minutes allotted to haul themselves and a heavy backpack across campus. They have been well fed despite the crowds in the cafeteria, wrangled rides with friends to school and gotten lab reports in on time. They have been volunteers, athletes, brothers and sisters, leaders and followers. These are students who have managed precalculus, Spanish and jazz band practice before school at 7 a.m. After school, they headed to the gym or the track, to tutors and lessons. Along with their studies, they have effortlessly upgraded their pods and pads and navigated their complex social life via iPhones and Skype. They compose and create. They have had adventures and made their mistakes. Despite the concerns of their parents, they have already dipped their toes into the possibilities and risks of the great nearby and beyond. And that is where they are headed now. We wish each of them the gift of kindness and patience, perseverance and luck. We wish them a life well lived. But finally, we cannot help but notice that all of the class of 2013’s top students — the five valedictorians, Isabel Christy, Corey Goelz, Natalie Marques, Emily Morse, and Christina Williamson, and the two salutatorians, Hannah Frisch and Madeline Larkin — are young women. It was the same for the class of 2012. We say, ‘you go girls.’

Without parking, Sound Transit light rail station will go empty I would expect that when all is done, it will be a very lonely station. No place to park — few riders. I frequently will drive to the existing Park-and-Ride lot on Mercer Island and wait for my grandson to arrive from Seattle. It is quite amazing how many cars drive into the Park-and-Ride, but then quickly leave after finding no parking spaces. An available Park-and-Ride lot will be key to an efficient use of light rail along I-90. How many Eastsiders park on the Mercer Island Parkand-Ride lot early in the morning to avoid the higher parking fees in Seattle or simply to avoid the rush hour traffic? This is good for Eastsiders, but ridiculous for Mercer Islanders. Change the parking rules and issue parking stickers to Mercer Island owners of state-registered vehicles licensed to a Mercer Island address and with the stickers firmly attached to the vehicle. Loose stickers will only invite such stickers to be shared with friends living on the Eastside of Lake Washington. Douglas Wilkinson

She was born Beverly Ann Davidson on June 26, 1925, in Hoquiam, WA, to Tory and Martha Davidson. Growing up in Auburn and spending summers on Anderson Island, she graduated from Auburn High School in 1943 and then attended Whitman College. In 1945 she married LeRoy (Ole) Olson. The couple resided in Auburn until 1957 when they moved to Mercer Island, and later to Bellevue in 1974. Beverly and Ole remained close to many friends in Auburn throughout their lives. Ole died in 1995 just months before their 50th Wedding Anniversary. In 2001, Beverly married Myron Doxon, a longtime family friend. He has resided at Emeritus Memory Care Center in Bellevue since 2011. Beverly is fondly remembered by residents of Mercer Island where, for almost 40 years, she was a friendly face at Look’s Pharmacy. She worked there continuously from 1961 and retired when the store closed. Friends and family would agree that Beverly was youthful in spirit, and in her attitude and actions for all of her 87 years on earth. Her love for her family and her constant smile and laughter live on in their hearts. Beverly is survived by her husband, Myron Doxon; her daughter, Tori Olson (Bellevue, WA); her granddaughter, Amanda Steinvall (Eugene, OR); Amanda’s sister, Charmaine Steinvall (Maple Valley, WA) and their father, Gary Steinvall (Newcastle, WA). unfounded. The direction that the School Board has taken so far as they study what the new school bond should include is very encouraging. I pass along these observations with the firm hope that the School Board can come up with a final plan that is economically feasible and will provide great new and remodeled schools that will be the home for the very best teaching environment. When the final bond is submitted to Islanders, the School Board will need better communicators to help all of us understand the new proposal. They have proved that they do not have good communicators now and to that end I am hoping some new and refreshing School Board members will be elected soon. Stan Ruble

Where will the MIHS class of 2013 go next? By Reporter Staff

The 378 students graduating from Mercer Island High School last Thursday night will attend colleges in 34 states from Bellevue to Miami, San Diego to Maine. Of those students, 229 will go to school in the states that border the Pacific Ocean. Of those, 148 will stay closer to home in Washington state, and 68 will head south to California. This year, 15 students are set to attend Bellevue College and seven others will attend community college or technical schools in state. Last year, 26 students said they planned to attend Bellevue College, up from just 10 graduates who chose the school in 2009. Forty-five grads will attend the University of Washington, with 15 headed to Western Washington University and two dozen to Washington State University in Pullman. Seven graduates will attend Gonzaga University in Spokane. In California, eight students will attend Chapman University in Orange, Calif., with seven each headed to Santa Clara University and the University of Southern California. Six each will enroll at UCLA, Stanford University

and the University of San Diego, and five at the University of California at Berkeley. Another seven will attend the University of Oregon in Eugene. In total, 65 members of the class of 2013 will attend school east of the Mississippi River, down from 77 of the class of 2012 who planned to head east last year. As a result, a smaller number than usual are headed to the northeast corner of the nation — east of the Mississippi River and north of the Mason-Dixon line. Fifty students will attend college in those states, with a dozen each in New York and Connecticut. As their talents and interests vary, so do the destinations of Islander grads far and wide. Three students are headed to MIT and one student will attend the Colorado School of Mines. Two students are planning on attending Ole Miss (the University of Mississippi) and one will head to Carroll College in Helena, Mont. One student is headed for the University of Hawaii and another to Centre College in Danville, Ky. Fifteen students have plans other than college for the coming year. Four are enlisting in the military. Samuel Valerio will join the Air Force; Raoul Generaux, the Coast Guard; Charles Yollin, the Marine Corps; and Kayla Mogil, the Israel Defense Forces. Three have said they will be working. Two are headed on mission trips and five are taking a ‘gap year.’ One student remains undecided.

Strawberry Festival, 2013 We’re Having A Fiesta!

A community of many faiths Islanders of many faiths celebrate baccalaureate

By Mary Jo Bruckner Special to the Reporter

The Mercer Island senior class of 2013 held an interfaith baccalaureate on Wednesday, June 5, the evening before graduation, as part of the longstanding Mercer Island graduation tradition. The Mercer Island baccalaureate is a student-led, interfaith community gathering that applauds the students’ accomplishments and blesses them on their way. Baccalaureate is an inclusive event of all faiths, and recognizes the deep bonds shared in high school while honoring this important transition to adulthood. Baccalaureate 2013 was held at St. Monica Catholic Church and celebrated the faith traditions of the graduating class, with the theme “Seasons of Love.” MIHS senior Kris Brackmann served as master of ceremonies and introduced Fr. Patrick Frietag, pastor of St. Monica Catholic Church, who warmly welcomed graduating seniors,

their families and friends to the celebration. Pastor Deanna Wildermuth, of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, led the invocation. Speakers for the baccalaureate program were chosen by the class of 2013. Student speakers TuanDat Nguyen and Cristina Scalzo, along with faculty speaker, Colin Bush, provided motivational and inspiring words. Musical performances included a prelude performed by senior Stuart Burke on piano; the interlude “Miles of Time” from the musical “Trails,” performed by the vocal duet of seniors Lexie Jones and Julie Hamp, accompanied by pianist Jessie Lu. A senior string quintet with Caleb Chuck, Sydney Thieme, Jacob FongGurzinsky, Anna HascheKluender, David Woolsten performed the final interlude with “Yesterday” by Paul McCartney. The common thread of creation is represented in many faith traditions. Graduating seniors Nikhil Mishra (Hindu), Ellie Palmberg (Christian), Sahir Noorani (Muslim), and Yoton Bentov (Jewish) spoke about creation as it

relates to their individual faith traditions. The evening concluded with a blessing of the students by the entire faith community and a benediction by Julie Steel, children and family ministries pastor at Mercer Island Covenant Church. HerzlNer Tamid’s Rabbi Ben Maslan provided a moving explanation of the meaning of the shofar, as Carol Maslan’s blowing of the shofar concluded the ceremony. Seniors, their families, and the entire community gathered in St. Monica Parish Hall after the baccalaureate for a reception and gallery featuring the graduating seniors’ artworks. The Baccalaureate Planning Committee meets during the spring semester at the high school and consists of student, parent, faculty and clergy representatives. High school students and parents who would like to be involved in the 2014 Baccalaureate Planning Committee should contact Kathy Fisher, director of Intergenerational Ministry Programs, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, at (206) 232-3270.

Grad hopes to honor mother’s memory Engagements David Mjelde heads to college with a desire to work in his mother’s memory for colon cancer awareness

Teasdale-Hughes

By Mary L. Grady

editor@mi-reporter.com

It will be 11 years this August since David Mjelde’s mother died after a long struggle with colon cancer. He was just 7 years old. It was his mother, Susie Mjelde Lindquist, who inspired the colon cancer awareness campaign called ‘Get Your Rear in Gear.’ Since its formation by her family a dozen years ago, the charity has spread its influence and financial support of colon cancer prevention and research campaigns across the United States through events that include the Mercer Island Rotary Run. Her son, David Mjelde, a 2013 graduate of Mercer Island High School, aims to continue to make colon cancer awareness a major goal as he moves on to the next phase of his life. Mjelde will attend the University of Arizona in Tucson this fall. He said he is considering a range if majors. Perhaps physiology or even sports marketing. Although barely in elementary school when his mother died, he said he thought she was pretty special. She was passionate about helping others understand what was at stake with colon cancer, he said, of her struggle to live. It was she who came up with the phrase ‘Get Your Rear in Gear.’ She was funny. “She did not want anyone else’s 7-year-old kid to lose their mother,” he said. When Mjelde was still very young and his mother was undergoing treatment, the family formed the “Susie Lindquist-Mjelde Colon Cancer Coalition.” Mjelde said he has participated in many Rotary Run events. He has raised money for cancer causes on his own. He said his commitment to the fight against colon cancer has grown stronger. He hopes that he can establish an event, perhaps in Tucson, to further fundraising and awareness of the disease. In the years that have followed his mother’s death, Mjelde misses his mother in a different sort of way.

Contributed Photo

The Mjelde family poses for a photo in 2002, just a few months before Susan Lindquist-Mjelde died of colon cancer in August that year. Clockwise, from top, Gavin Mjelde, Jeff Mjelde, David Mjelde, Susan Lindquist Mjelde, and daughter Heather Hall. The photo was taken before she underwent more treatment for colon cancer. “Now, as I get older, I can’t remember her very well anymore,” he said. “Luckily, my family can step in and tell me the stories all over again.” David Mjelde was born 12 years after his brother, Gavin, and is 16 years younger than his sister, Heather. When his mother died in 2002, Mjelde was with his aunt Kristin Tabor at a Target store on an errand on their way to see her. The 7-year-old was suddenly sick and threw up. It turned out that it was the same moment his mother had died. A few months after her death, his father married the spouse of another colon cancer victim. The two formed a lively new clan from the tragedies. Yet, Mjelde said that the loss of his mother taught him that he had to be independent. He felt he did not have that one parent who was tapping on his shoulder to monitor his life.

“I learned that I had to be in charge. I had to be the one to study, keep myself healthy, study and handle the social life,” he said. As independent as he is, he values the connections with others. “Connectedness is very important to me. It is something I value,” he said. As Mjelde heads to college, he will be near his grandparents. The spirit of his mother and legacy will be there with him, too.

43rd annual All-Island Track meet By Megan Managan

mmanagan@mi-reporter.com

Hundreds of fourth and fifth-graders from all of the elementary schools on Mercer Island gathered on the afternoon of Friday, June 7, to take part in the 43rd annual All-Island Track meet. The long-standing tra-

dition brings together students from Island Park, Lakeridge, West Mercer and St. Monica to the Mercer Island High School track to compete in various track events. From the softball throw to the 100-meter dash, students were cheered on by their parents and friends in the stands.

New this year, the schools celebrate late Island Park Elementary P.E. teacher Jesse Jaramillo with the first ever Jesse Jaramillo 400-meter fun run, which all students were invited to participate in. This year’s title went to West Mercer.
