Second boat in a week lands on beach
By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter

A large boat went aground at Lagoon Point on Central Whidbey Tuesday at 4 a.m., about an hour before the sun rose to create a glorious day on Whidbey Island. The boat, named the Neahkahnie, wasn’t leaking oil or gas and did not appear to be an environmental threat, according to the Coast Guard. The vessel contained 100,000 pounds of farmraised salmon. It was the second boat to run aground on Whidbey Island the past week. Ray Kellison, a commercial fisherman from Coupeville, took photos of the 60-foot vessel Baltic Sea after it was beached at Snakelum Point near Coupeville May 28. Kellison said the boat captain steered on the wrong side of the buoy as the tide was heading out. The Baltic Sea was able to float off after the tide came in. Kellison was also on hand to see the beached Neahkahnie Tuesday. His boat, the Alsea, is moored in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. He plans to leave in five days for Dutch Harbor. Kellison said one of his

Serving up a message Whidbey residents determined to beat cancer
By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter
Since being diagnosed with bone cancer last August, sleep doesn’t come easily for Gail Seelow. Yet, she surprised herself Saturday morning, nodding off in her car. The early morning quiet didn’t last, replaced instead by the sounds of heavy machinery. “They came to clean the Porta Potties,” Seelow said, breaking into laughter. “I got maybe 10-to-15 minutes of sleep, but I don’t sleep well anyways. For some reason, this (cancer) has affected my sleeping. The doctor gave me some sleeping pills but they just really aren’t doing it for me.” SEELOW WAS one of hundreds of people from Oak Harbor, Coupeville and other points on Whidbey Island who came to North Whidbey Middle School over the weekend to wage a fight against cancer. The sun shined on the Relay for Life of Whidbey Island, helping lift spirits and provide an almost festive atmosphere during an event in which people came to celebrate

The Walmart store in Oak Harbor was evacuated for about an hour Saturday after an unknown person made a bomb threat. Nothing suspicious was found inside the store, according to Oak Harbor Police Chief Ed Green. A Walmart employee reported the bomb threat just before 5 p.m. The employee said a man had just called in the threat to the store. “Male subject started conversation by mumbling — then clearly states there was a bomb in the store — then

Ribbon cutting for picnic shelters New buildings evoke ‘early 20th century bungalow’ style The City of Oak Harbor is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony for two new picnic shelters at Fort Nugent Park. The ceremony is at the shelters at 3 p.m., Friday, June 7, 2013 at the park on Fort Nugent Street. The picnic shelters are located just south of the children’s playground, uphill of the park restrooms. The new shelters are more than just a roof for picnic tables, according to the city. They were designed in a craftsman architectural
style with large exposed Douglas fir beams and Western Red cedar posts sitting atop masonr y bases. Deep overhanging eaves, exposed end rafters, projecting beam ends, and simple trim lines further develop the architectural style, evoking the look of early 20th century bungalow residences, the city said in a press release. In addition to the classic architecture, the shelters have lights and electrical outlets. The picnic shelters are a much-anticipated addition to the picnic area. They were identified as a community need in a 2004 Fort Nugent Park Phase II expansion plan, but construction was delayed pending funding. In 2009, the communi-
ty-built playground was completed in the picnic area and quickly became popular. Since the playground opened, public requests for the picnic shelters increased significantly. Community park impact fees, which are reserved for park expenditures, reached sufficient levels allowing construction of the picnic shelters to break ground in March. The shelters can serve larger groups such as reunions, parties and sports gatherings, said city officials. They are available on a “first come, first served” basis, unless reserved through the City of Oak Harbor Utilities Office. Fee to reserve a picnic shelter is $25.

Auditor says Coupeville staff bonuses violated Constitution By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter
Coupeville officials inadvertently violated the state Constitution by paying bonuses to town employees over two years, according to the Washington State Auditor’s Office. The Auditor’s Office released the audit finding this week. It states that the $1,200 per employee payments made it 2011 and 2012 were not allowed under the State Constitution since they were for work already performed. A total of $36,824 was paid out. Mayor Nancy Conard questions the interpretation of the law. Conard said personnel with the Auditor’s Office should share the blame for the error because they reviewed and approved the town’s plan for the payouts. She said the payments would have been fine if they were paid forward, like $100 a month for the next year. “It’s OK that we did it,” she said, “just not the way we did it.” “It’s kind of splitting hairs, in my opinion.” Conard said she proposed the payments at the end of each of the two years. She said the town had money left in the budget and employees haven’t had a cost-
“It’s OK that we did it, just not the way we did it.” Nancy Conard Coupeville mayor of-living adjustment in their wages since 2008. Conard said she decided on the one-time payments instead of raises in case the money wasn’t in the budget in future years. “I wanted to find a way we could make a salary adjustment without it being ongoing,” she said. Conard said she also liked the idea of one-time payments, which “feel like a bigger deal,” as opposed to spreading it out over time. Town Attorney Grant Weed and the state Auditor’s Office approved the plan. It was passed by the Town Council both years. The state Auditor, however, cites clear-cut language from the state Constitution in the audit report. “The legislature shall never grant any extra compensation to any public officer, agent, employee, servant, or contractor, after the services shall have been rendered,”
it states. The town offered an official response. “The Town contacted our legal counsel as well as a representative of the SAO to discuss the option for a pay increase.” “Unfortunately, it was not clear that the manner of payment, in a lump sum, would be considered retrospective. The Town now understands that pay increases must be paid prospectively,” the response stated. Conard said the audit finding has no effect beyond being embarrassing. The town was recognized last year for going 16 years with a clean audit. The employees don’t have return the money they received. Conard said she and council members will discuss the issue of future compensation increase during the upcoming mid-year budget adjustments.

Port of Coupeville races competitive By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter
With a ballot mostly filled with uncontested races on Central Whidbey, the Port of Coupeville is one of two contested races in the November general election. Two of three seats are up for election this year. Both have two people vying to fill each position. Soon-to-be-retired Port of Coupeville Director Jim Patton will square off against Bill Larsen for the District No. 2 position. Patton has been serving at port director for more than eight years. He is resigning at the end of the year. Patton said he wanted to continue the work currently underway. The biggest project is determining how Greenbank Farm will be operated once the contract
with the Greenbank Farm Management Group expires. Patton’s opponent is Bill Larsen, who is making his first foray into local politics. Larsen, who is retired from the Navy, is a substance abuse counselor who was also interested in getting involved in the community. “It might be a way to get more involved,” Larsen said. Larsen is married with three children. He lives in Coupeville. Larsen and Patton share similar backgrounds. Both hail from New York and both served on submarines while serving in the Navy. Larsen said he is interested in maintaining a balance of promoting the Greenbank Farm while preserving and maintaining the landscape. In the second port race, recently-appointed Commissioner Mike Diamanti faces a challenge
from Dick Bowen. Diamanti was appointed to fill Laura Blankenship’s unexpired term after she quit last month. Because he was appointed, the District No. 3 seat must appear on the November ballot. Diamanti lost to Blankenship in the November 2011 election. Diamanti said he is familiar with the Port of Coupeville. He served on committees to develop the port’s comprehensive plan and conducted an analysis of the port’s moorage rates and fuel sales. Bowen, a retired real estate developer, said he thinks there would be more constructive agricultural ways to use the open spaces at the Greenbank Farm. “There’s got to be some use for that open space,” Bowen said. He is a member of the
Port sorts out latest laundry list of construction, maintenance projects By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter
With both the Coupeville Wharf and the Greenbank Farm in need of some TLC, leaders for the Port of Coupeville are prioritizing maintenance projects. A prioritized list of construction projects was presented during a port commission meeting April 10. Jim Patton, executive director for the port, said proposals will be accepted next week to replace concrete fuel floats at the Wharf. The two 40-foot concrete fuel floats have failed several times in recent months, most recently last week when one float broke loose. The floats will be a costly project for the port. The new floats, which will have lattices to allow sunlight to shine through to help underwater plant growth, could cost the port $70,000. That amount doesn’t include the recent attempts to repair damage sustained by recent storms. The floats are insured and the port has a $1,000 deductible. The port is also chipping in $10,000 to pay for restoration of the south wall of the Coupeville Wharf. The port received a grant from the Ebey’s Forever Fund and the project is slated to be part of the field school organized by the Trust Board of Ebey’s Landing.
Additional high-priority projects include a staff restroom at the Coupeville Wharf at a cost of $3,500, plus labor; new buoys in Penn Cove, a $10,000 project; and restroom improvements at the Greenbank Farm, estimated at $4,600. The highest ticket repair, albeit a lower priority, is reroofing and insulating Barn A at Greenbank Farm. Most recent estimate puts the project at $68,000. Greenbank Farm Manager Judy Feldman said the roofing project must be done without changing the historic features of the building. The barn is on the National Historic Registry. Insulation would have to be installed without hiding the wood beams that are visible on the inside. “It was built in 1904 and there’s not a stitch of insulation in it,” Feldman said. To add the insulation, the roof must be lifted off the barn. Feldman added that the current roof isn’t in horrible condition and doesn’t threaten the structure of the barn. A timeline hasn’t been set to insulate the barn roof. Feldman said that project depends on funding. Port of Coupeville budgeted $55,686 for construction maintenance and repair during 2013, and $20,000 for emergency repairs.
The public entity received $335,000 in a Conservation Futures Fund award, but Patton said the commissioners haven’t made a decision to use the additional funds for maintenance and construction.
Whidbey Camano Land Trust and he has experience with elected office. He was a member of the Bainbridge Island City Council in the 1980s. Bowen said he knows how to build consensus, and believes that is important for success in public office. Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue has a contested seat up for election this year. Incumbent Cheryl Engle faces Stan Anderson in November. Whidbey General Hospital board, Coupeville Town Council and Coupeville School Board have seats up for election in 2013. It appears those races will be uncontested. Island County Auditor’s Office will hold a special filing period next month to allow people a chance to run for a seat where no candidate has previously filed. Those seats include a spot on the hospital board and Coupeville School Board.

Unsolved Safeway assault case closed By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter
Police closed an investigation into an assault that allegedly occurred in the back room of Safeway in Oak Harbor. No arrests were made. Detective Sgt. Teri Gardner with the Oak Harbor Police Department said a “person of interest” in the case was identified after an image from a surveillance video was posted on the department’s Facebook page. The victim, however, wasn’t able to identify the suspect in a photo montage she was shown. An officer called the “person of interest,” who has moved out of state, but
didn’t obtain any additional information to move the case along. “We have no other recourse than to close the case,” Gardner said. The Safeway employee reported that she was working in the back room of Safeway March 30 when a customer assaulted her. She claimed a man put her in a choke hold and tried to kiss her. The incident was extremely upsetting to the woman, who shakes uncontrollably when discussing the incident. The woman claimed both the police and Safeway managers mishandled the case and didn’t take it seriously.

relay for life CONTINUED FROM A1 noon. Many of the Whidbey Relay for Life’s organizing committee, including Seelow, arrived at 9 a.m. Friday for setup with most unable to slow down and shut their eyes till around 4 a.m. Saturday.
“It’s what he’s focused on for six months,” their mother, Wendy Charboneau said. Only 4, Elayana represented how cancer doesn’t discriminate. She was treated at 13 months of age and has had “a clean bill of health ever since,” her mother said.
SEELOW, 62, started coming to the Relay for Life event in Oak Harbor 15 years ago as a team member for Whidbey Island Bank. But since then, she’s had two bouts with cancer and has rejoined the many purple-clad survivors who come with a hope for a cure. “This time, I’m at stage 4,” Seelow said, “and I feel it’s very important to raise this money so that my family, my kids, my grandkids don’t get this. We have a family history of it.” “My sister’s a survivor. My mother died of cancer.”
RYAN NEAL, 25, of Coupeville, also was wearing a purple “survivors” T-shirt. He joined the hundreds in purple who participated in the survivor lap that began the relay Friday night. “I’ve been relaying since I was 4-years-old,” he said. “I lost both of my grandparents to lung cancer.” Neal was found to have leukemia at age 2, but now has been “cancer-free” for 23 years. Near the front of the pack of the survivor lap was Oak Harbor’s Kate Rosenthal being pushed in a wheelchair with three large balloons above her in the shape of a number that represented her age. One hundred.
FUNDRAISING FOR this year’s event is falling short of the committee’s goal, but not short of energy and optimism. Karla Sharkey, the Whidbey event’s chairperson, had set a goal of raising $210,000. So far, just over $141,000 has been raised. They will keep tabulating until August’s deadline, she said. “It’s not all about the money,” Sharkey said. “I believe if the participants and the community have a positive experience they will return next year and hopefully the donations will be better.” There were more smiles than tears. CONTESTANTS IN the Mr. Rockin’ Relay competition drew looks of astonishment and curiosity. Men put on makeup, dresses, wigs and some wore high heels as they walked the track in search of donations for their teams. Instead, they got mugged for photographs while being slipped cash. “You look so pretty,” a young girl said to Coupeville’s Daniel Leavitt, who was decked out in a pink skirt, baring cleanly shaved legs. Leavitt, 29, won the contest, representing the team for Whidbey General Hospital, where his mother Bonnie works. She is a cancer survivor. “I do this to raise awareness and just help her out because I love my mom,” he said. THERE WERE many ways to show love and support at the Whidbey Relay for Life. Some gave a part of themselves instead of cash. Piper McMahan, 6, was one of them. The Oak Harbor kindergartner participated in the Pantene Beautiful Lengths hair donation drive, giving up 8 inches of her hair Saturday to be used to make a real-hair wig for cancer patients. Jeff McMahan said his daughter’s donation had a more personal meaning this year. He said his mother, Lily McMahan, was fighting cancer and they were headed to Auburn to see her at the hospital after camping out at the Relay for Life event. He said his daughter wanted to donate her hair after he told her about the program. He said this year’s event impacted him even more. “Yeah, big time,” he said. OAK HARBOR hairstylist Naomie Robinson, a member of the Whidbey Relay for Life committee, donated her time for the cuts. She was busy, giving haircuts to several others, including Oak Harbor High School business education teacher Sabrina Underwood as well as 10-year-old Jacob Charboneau. Charboneau was doing it for his little sister Elayana, who is a cancer survivor.
ROSENTHAL’S FIRST bout with cancer was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 58. That was 42 years ago. “She has it again now. They’ve got it under control,” said her daughter Rita Lambert. “She’s had it six times,” said another daughter, Katy Reissner. Rosenthal sat in her chair and smiled warmly. She said the Relay for Life event was “wonderful” and was happy she came. “You take care of family,” she said, sharing some of her life wisdom, “all the in-laws, and outlaws, and all that.” She laughed a little. Her daughters said their mother has always been a gentle soul, always so positive, always so kind to others. She likes chocolate, prays at night and enjoys an occasional cold beverage. “She does like beer,” Lambert said.
Ron Newberry/Whidbey News-Times
Kate Rosenthal, who recently turned 100, is flanked by her daughters Rita Lambert, left, and Katy Reissner. Rosenthal has had breast cancer on and off for 42 years.
Sabrina Underwood, a business teacher at Oak Harbor High School, donated 8 inches of her hair to be used for wigs for cancer patients. During the luminary ceremony, lanterns are lit and released into the night sky. Roughly 1,250 luminary bags were placed around the track, representing survivors, those lost and still fighting. “Yeah, I do,” Rosenthal said. “You’ve got to be positive,” Reissner said. “She’s always real positive.” POSITIVE ENERGY was everywhere at North Whidbey Middle School. It’s as if everyone just wanted to will cancer away. Roughly 1,250 luminary bags were placed around the track and were lit Friday night. They represented survivors in remission, those still being treated and the ones who lost their fight. Twenty-one lanterns were lit and set free
into the night sky during a luminary ceremony that some ranked among the best in Oak Harbor. A poem was read during the ceremony. “Their memories surround us, on their journey we reflect; we feel their arms around us, here to comfort, love and protect. “It’s them that we’re here for, they put up the fight; whether living or passed, they light up the night. “The time has come to light up the track, and to go back out and do what we’re here for, celebrate, remember and fight back.”
Members of the Kiss this Cancer team offered face painting as an alternate way to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Cemetery commission races draw multiple candidates By JESSIE STENSLAND Staff reporter
With three candidates, the race for one of two open seats on Cemetery District One is the most contested in North Whidbey this election season. David Watson, a cemetery groundskeeper who lost his job last year, is running against local history enthusiast Katherine Roehm and Army retiree Michael Knippers for Position No. 2. Three candidates also vied for Position No. 3 originally, but incumbent Ann Abramhamse withdrew because of family responsibilities and travel plans. That leaves David McNeely and Lee Koetje to vie for the vacant seat. Under state law, primary elections are not held for the offices of cemetery district or district commissioners. That means all five candidates will appear on the November ballot. Cemetery commissioners are six-year, unpaid positions. THE CEMETERY experienced a period of unrest last year after Commissioner Jim Flowers and Michael Dougliss, longtime cemetery supervisor, began arguing over the purchase of a $100 software program. The two remaining commissioners placed the three cemetery employees on leave while they investigated perceived problems with
cemetery operations. Dougliss has been supervisor of the cemetery since 1997 and his wife, Joan, worked as the secretary and treasurer for 23 years. Dougliss’ son-in-law, Watson, was the groundskeeper for two years. People who supported the Douglisses amassed at cemetery board meetings to complain about how they were treated. The commissioners eventually brought Michael and Joan Dougliss back to work under new contracts with more clear-cut responsibilities. Watson didn’t get a new contract and had to find a new job. DURING AN interview with the Whidbey NewsTimes, Watson said he’s running for commissioner because he cares about the cemetery and the people who inter their loved ones there. “I like helping people in that situation,” he said. “It feels good at the end of the day to help people who are going through such a difficult time.” Watson said he wants to see new faces serving on the board and resolving some of the conflicts that he claims are ongoing. He said he’s in favor of signing new contracts with the employees that give them more decision-making abili-

David Watson, at left, is pictured with his in-laws, cemetery employees Michael and Joan Dougliss. Watson is running for the cemetery commission. ties so they can run the cemetery more effectively and efficiently. “Instead of a supervisor, Michael Dougliss is more of a figurehead,” he said. “He’s not really in charge of anything.” Watson said he also wants to take a close look at the books. He alleges about $50,000 was spent on unclear expenses. ROEHM SAID she is aware there were “issues” within the cemetery district leadership, but said she doesn’t take sides. Rather, Roehm said she wants to be look at things without any bias. “I want to make decisions myself instead of group think,” she said.
Home Owner Septic Training
Roehm said an interest in genealogy and history led her to seek office. Also, she said she wants to be involved in the community and assumed that there wouldn’t be a lot of people interested in being an unpaid cemetery district commissioner. KNIPPERS SAID he’s
very interested in history and community service as well. He’s relatively new to the area and wasn’t aware of the of the cemetery district conflicts. Knippers said he just wants to be a good citizen. “I’m retired from the Army, so I have time to spare,” he said.
IN THE race for Position No. 3, McNeely said he hopes to bring a fresh perspective and financial acumen to the district. He started attending meetings last year and said he was alarmed by the commissioners’ actions. He wrote a letter to the editor criticizing the commissioners for placing the employees on indefinite leave without pay. McNeely said he has no personal agenda and can offer a fresh perspective. NcNeely said he can also help with accounting. Before retiring, McNeely worked as an assistant vice president at a bank and school administrator. “I have a good background in that area,” he said, “and I think I could be of service to the group.” Koetje did not return calls for comment. Abramhamse said he’s a volunteer at the cemetery and looks after the graves of the many Koetje family member buried there.

Wishing this year’s graduates fair winds and following seas publisher’s column
By Keven R. Graves
It has been said that hindsight is 20/20 . I think that’s true. My philosphy in life is have no regrets, but gain wisdom from your successes as well as your mistakes. It’s all about learning from our experiences. As a new crop of graduates gets ready to leave the protective walls of high school and head to jobs or college, there are any number of suggestions I could offer. “Could” is the operative word. Among this year’s graduates is one 18-year-old who lately responds to the insights and advice I offer with an angsty, grumbly and dismissive “yeah” or “OK.” My son, Liam, is floating in that hazy gray area between dependent and independent. He wants to enjoy all of the perks of being an adult, but not pay for any of them himself. He’s in for an awakening. In hindsight, I wasn’t prepared to go to a university right out of high school — I was immature, extremely shy and relatively undisciplined when it came to school work. Attending a community college would have made more sense in my case. I had a bumpy start to college, but I made it through. The work force is highly competitive, and I believe now, as I did then, that graduating from a university offers a leg up in the real world. While I hope that my experience might benefit my son and help guide his path, I realize that he is determined to do things his own way. And that’s OK. Part of my responsibility as a parent is to allow my son to create his own successes and make his own mistakes. It’s time for me to start rolling up the safety net. Frankly, that’s not so easy for me to do, but I’m growing more comfortable with the idea with each dismissive “yeah” and “OK” that comes out of his mouth. To my son — and the rest of this year’s high school graduates — congratulations on completing this part of your journey, and fair winds and following seas as you begin the next chapter.

Letters to the editor Island County
Everyone should help pay for law, justice funding Editor, When fiscal times get tough, many of our government representatives choose to cut vital services such as fire and law enforcement. God forbid we should cut so-called social services or free bus services. Why not spread the financial support burden among all residents of Island County instead of always targeting homeowners through property taxes. All people in the county benefit from law and fire protection services, ergo all people should bear the costs of these vital services. One way to accomplish this “fair share” support is through a sales tax rather than property taxes. As for the proposed tax, I would vote for it only under two conditions: • Funds currently spent by the county for law and justice services shall not be reduced in any way.
• Taxes raised via the new levy shall be used exclusively for law enforcement and cannot be used by the county government for any other purpose. That would keep the county from using the levy as an excuse to shift general funds currently going to L&J to other purposes. The price of citizenship should be paid by all citizens, not just those deemed by the government as “able” to pay — sounds like socialism to me. Too bad this isn’t done by the federal government where almost half the population pay no income taxes and thus avoid the onus of responsible citizenship. This group is getting a free ride paid for by the taxpayers. Joe Kirschbaum Oak Harbor

Don’t need more fast food place in Oak Harbor Editor, I’ve recently been informed that the empty lot once occupied by Berg Ford is to be a third McDonald’s in Oak Harbor. We presently have one on State Highway 20 and a second at Ault Field. The area where Berg Ford was would be ideal for a family restaurant like Olive Garden, Red Lobster or a steak house. We don’t need more fast food. Fred Bishop Oak Harbor

Boat owners must register by June 30 Boating season is here, and the deadline for renewing boat and watercraft registration decals is right around the corner. Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider reminds islanders that all Washington state boat registrations expire on June 30. “Don’t let an expired registration spoil your day; remember to renew before you get out on the water,” Crider said. Boat registrations can be renewed online at the state Department of Licensing website or in person at a
vehicle licensing office in Freeland, Coupeville or Oak Harbor. Those who choose to renew at an office should make sure to note the registration number on the bow of the boat or watercraft and take that information to the office. Due to budget cuts, the Department of Licensing discontinued paper renewal notices for boats in 2010 and instead offered boat owners the opportunity to sign up to receive email renewal reminders. It’s too late to sign up for
an email renewal reminder for this year, but boat owners can sign up online at dol. wa.gov to receive renewal reminders by email in the future.

Hu wraps up award-winning collegiate swim career By JIM WALLER Sports editor
Forty. That’s the number of academic and athletic awards accumulated by Oak Harbor High School graduate and swimmer John Hu in his impressive four-year career at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. Hu holds three Stevens’ school swim records (200 individual medley, 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly), earned Stevens’ Most Valuable Player award twice, was the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships Swimmer of the Meet four consecutive years, received the district (Empire 8) Swimmer of the Year award twice and picked up district Swimmer of the Week honors 13 times. In addition, he received AllAmerican honors five times, AllAmerican honorable mention seven times and National Swimmer of the Week once. This year he helped Stevens win its second district title and highest national finish ever, sixth. Hu, a chemical engineering major, excelled in the classroom as well, landing on the Stevens’ and conference Presidents’ List sthree times each. His junior and seniors years, he was a Capital One All-District academic selection and College Swimming Coaches Association Scholar All-American. His senior season he was a thirdteam Capital One Academic All-

He comes to practice every day ready to work hard with a smile on his face. Over the course of his career, John has never missed a workout. His consistency at practice and great attitude have made him the ideal role model for his teammates.” Hu was introduced to Stevens by
sports in brief Coupeville adds 8 to all-league list Add eight more Coupeville High School athletes to the all-Cascade Conference list for the 2013 spring season. The all-league members of the track and golf teams were announced by the conference Wednesday, May 29. Twelve other Wolves picked up all-league honors when the baseball, softball and soccer all-conference teams were announced earlier in the month. Freshman Makana Stone earned first-team, all-league honors in four track events: 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x200 and 4x400 relays. She was joined on the 4x200 team by seniors Madison Tisa-McPhee and Jai’Lysa Hoskins and freshman Sylvia Hurlburt; and on the 4x400 squad by Hoskins, sophomore Marisa Etzell and freshman Kirsten
Pelroy. Tisa-McPhee was also first team in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and on the second-team 4x100 relay with Etzell, Hurlburt and Hoskins. Sophomore golfer Christine Fields earned first-team honors, and senior brother Austin was a second-team choice.
Starr helps raise funds for cancer Oak Harbor native Ver Andrew Starr will cycle over 4,500 miles from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska, this summer with Texas 4000, a cancer fighting student organization from the University of Texas. Starr, a 2010 OHHS graduate, will join 68 other students on a 70-day bicycle ride across North America in order to raise funds, spread knowledge and harbor hope in the fight
former high school teammate Evan Wilson. When he visited the campus, he liked what Stevens had to offer academically, athletically and geographically. He said, “I’m still unsure if I prefer the East or West Coast, but I do appreciate having the opportunity to experience the difference.” Swimming for the North Whidbey Aquatic Club under coach Neil Romney and for Oak Harbor High School helped prepare him for the rigors of collegiate swimming, Hu said. “From NWAC I learned discipline, good stroke technique, how to show a little toughness, responsibility... the list goes on and on,” he said. “At the collegiate level, competitions are about winning as a team. High school swimming gave me a taste of that.” As a college freshman he set a goal of placing in the top eight at the national meet. He did just that, finishing eighth in the 400 IM, and added a ninth (200 fly) and 13th (200 IM). From there his goals were to continue to drop “serious time” and be a major contender for a national title. He met the goal of national contender this season, placing third in the 400 IM in 3:53.16 (taking nearly two seconds off his school record) and fourth in the 200 fly in a school record 1:47.79. He calls his national 400 IM swim his greatest achievement: “Finishing at the wall, I knew I had exhausted every last muscle in my
against cancer. The students left June 1 across three different routes and arrive in Anchorage Aug. 9. Each student is required to raise a minimum of $4,500 for cancer research in order to participate. Starr and his team will stop in Oak Harbor July 20. Legion wins 5-2 in league opener The Oak Harbor Legion baseball team opened its summer league season with a 5-2 win over visiting Burlington Monday. The contest was a makeup game for last Thursday’s rainout and lifted Oak Harbor’s season record to 4-0. Oak Harbor zipped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brent Mertin’s reached on catcher’s interference, Danny Wolfe singled and both scored on C.J. Meders’ double.

When I managed to turn around to see the scoreboard, I cracked a smile when I saw my time and place. To have given my all and to have done so well at the end of my career kind of validated my whole swimming experience.” Now that his college eligibility is complete, Hu said he might swim “with masters, but I don’t think I will swim quite as competitively any more.” His scholastic swimming days are through but their impression will remain: “I take with me memories and friendships forged in the flame of hardship. Oak Harbor made it 5-0 with a three-run fourth. Meders and Teddy Peterschmidt singled, and Meders scored on Casiano Atienza’s base hit. An error allowed a second run to score, and then Mertins’ singled in another. Starting pitcher Peterschmidt, changing speeds effectively, kept the Sox off balance all evening. Burlington scored single unearned runs in the fifth and seventh as Peterschmidt tossed a five hitter. Meders’ two hits, two RBI and double led the offense. John Hu said, “We get along well, so we room together. My fear when he came to Stevens was that he’d be stuck in my shadow, but he’s started making his own way here and I’m proud of him for it.” Sister Ciara is a freshman swimmer at the University of Chicago. Tournament in SedroWoolley. The Dodgers thumped the Sedro-Woolley Reds 13-2 Saturday. Brandon Wells went 3-for-3 and Kaleb Vaughan 2-for-2 with a double. The Red Sox fell 10-7 to the Central Whidbey Cardinals Saturday, and then, behind the pitching of Dylan Roberts and Hannah Barnes, defeated the Central Whidbey Giants 5-2 Sunday. An incredible comeback in the final inning helped the North Whidbey Rockies open with a 7-6 win over the Burlington-Edison Ducks Saturday. The Rockies fell to the South Skagit Giants 15-7 Sunday, then bounced back for a 12-2 win over Alfy’s Pizza of Sedro-Woolley Monday. In a battle of Mariners, the North Whidbey version, which had a first-round bye, defeated the South Skagit M’s 6-5 Sunday. The South Skagit Mariners defeated North Whidbey’s Angels Saturday. In the Rockies’ win over
the Ducks, the Rockies scored four runs in their final at bat to pull out the improbable win. In the sixth, Daniel Soto led off with a double and the next four hitters singled. Joe Dixon finished the rally with a sharp single to drive in Shane Vogt with the winning run. In the 15-7 loss to the Giants, Trevor Sheils paced the Rockies with three hits, including a double. In the win over Alfy’s Pizza, starting pitcher Micah Franklin faced eight batters, striking out seven. Sheils stroked three hits, finishing with two triples and five RBI. In the Mariner-Mariner game, North Whidbey’s Karmen Mebane pitched the first four innings, striking out six and allowing one run. On offense, he added a two-run single. The North Whidbey Mariners and Rockies continue play at 6 p.m in SedroWoolley tonight. Results of the other North Whidbey games were not reported by press time.

his father was reassigned in the United States Navy. His love of travel and adventure was awakened by frequent family travels throughout Europe. His education began in Virginia Beach, VA, and was completed in Oak Harbor, which has become the family’s permanent home. Paul (Bill, to his family, friends, and class mates) learned to ski at Stevens Pass through winter Ski-school bus trips organized by his high school. Other skiing trips to various locations in Washington, California, Canada, and even Europe, honed his skills to the expert level. During his high school years in Oak Harbor, he earned varsity letters in track, basketball, and football. His basketball team finished fourth in the Washington state basketball tournament, and his football team reached post-season play for the first time in recent memory. Paul loved all outdoor activities the great Pacific Northwest had to offer, especially the family vacation property on Lake Walker, in the foothills behind Enumclaw. Paul loved to invite his friends to “the cabin” for fishing, swimming, relaxing, and just plain fun. In addition to skiing, in milder weather, he shifted his outdoor activities to frequent fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking trips throughout the area. After high school, he completed modeling and finishing school at Opus-1 Studios in Seattle, where he was employed as an advertising, runway, and photography model. For several seasons, he appeared in
Nordstrom, Jeep automobile, Ben Bridges jewelry, and various other local television and newspaper ads. Visits to family in Alaska, provided excellent opportunities for fishing adventures, including hooking trophy size halibut. As a natural progression of his love of the water, travel and adventure, he was employed as the First Mate on a very large private yacht, home ported in Laguna Beach, California. It frequently cruised from southern California to rugged Alaskan waters, and many points beyond. Because of his sport fishing skills and knowledge, he was designated the activities coordinator, providing guests with limitless opportunities to catch fresh seafood of local fish, crab, clam, and mussel. Cruising became his passion and more than 50 ocean cruises later, on both the private yacht and commercial cruise liners, he had seen most of the world by ship. After living in Hawaii and Laguna Beach, he moved to Palm Springs, California, nearly 20 years ago. In recent years, he was part owner of a Bartending School, and the manager of a popular afterhours night club and dance hall, both in downtown Palm Springs. Paul died on April10, 2013, in Palm Springs, after a very short battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice, and is survived by his father, Paul Rough, Jr., his loving sister, Clara Perry, his partner, Raleigh Hanbury, and extended family in both Seattle and Fairbanks, Alaska. A memorial service/celebration of life will be held in the Rocky Point picnic

OHHS Class of 2013 TOP 10
By Ron Newberry Staff reporter
London Cook and Matthew Jensen tend to follow each other around. They've known each other since sharing the same kindergarten class. They'll graduate together Monday night as members of Oak Harbor High School's Class of 2013. After that, they're going on a post-graduation trip to Europe with some more classmates. But then their paths will veer in slightly different directions. They picked different colleges. "We were both interested in Southern California," Cook said. "We have been for a while. His dream school was UCLA. Mine was USC." And that's where each is headed. "We're going to be big rivals," Cook said. Cook and Jensen are part of the Oak Harbor High School's Top 10 graduates of 2013. Of the Top 10, one wants to become a doctor, two want to be lawyers and four are interested in being engineers. It's a group with a heavy math and science influence. And one with accelerated goals such as Hope Crandall. She is one of three students in Oak
Harbor's Top 10 who participated in the Running Start program through Skagit Valley College. She said the credits she earned at Skagit Valley will allow her to enter the University of Washington's electrical engineering program classified as a junior. "I'm really interested in designing technology that's more environmentally sustainable," Crandall said.
Here's a closer look at Oak Harbor's 2013 Top 10: Madeline Mosolino
Maddy Mosolino is graduating from Oak Harbor with a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of the Class of 2013 along with Christina Wicker. Mosolino is vice president of DECA and was a Top 10 finisher at the national competition in Anaheim. She was a

state DECA competitor for three years. Mosolino is headed to the University of San Diego to go after a degree in political science, international relations or interdisciplinary humanities. She said she currently is interested in becoming an attorney and would like to go to law school on the East Coast after her undergraduate studies. She has attended the Oak Harbor schools since kindergarten. "I feel like we're a pretty tight senior class," she said. "I feel like the senior class as a whole is pretty united more than past years. It's nice." Christina Wicker is a high achiever academically with a 4.0 GPA and athletically as twotime most valuable runner on the Oak Harbor cross-country team. She is looking for continued challenges in both areas at the Massachusetts Instititute of Technology, where she plans to

run cross country and track and field and is most likely going to major in physics as part of her goal to one day become a researcher in small-particle physics. "I like science," she said. "That (smallparticle physics) seems like to be the most interesting thing. The mechanics on that level are just so different than this level. I think it's pretty interesting. There are some really interesting new applications coming out, especially having to do with information technology. I'm hoping by the time I get a degree in that, I'll be able to apply my knowledge and just really make a contribution, I guess." Wicker is so advanced in math that she skipped Algebra II at Oak Harbor. "I just felt like in math classes I was just kind of getting bored," she said. Wicker has a busy summer planned, continuing to train with her Running Unlimited Fitness running club and camping. She also is going on a family vacation to Palau. She said she believes running has helped her with setting goals and staying fit keeps the mind fit as well. "Exercise in general, I think helps with thinking," she said.

HOpe Crandall
Hope Crandall is graduating with a 3.98 GPA after spending much of the past two years taking classes at the Skagit Valley College Oak Harbor campus through Running Start. She is planning to attend the University of Washington, where she was directly admitted to the electrical engineering program with junior status. She wants to become an electrical engineer who uses and develops environmentally sustainable technology. "In electrical engineering, just the parts that go into the different products are just dangerous," she said. "They get left around and it's a really big problem right now. There are just warehouses full of old electronics that are just kind of decaying and can't be thrown away." Crandall received a certificate of merit from the Society of Women Engineers and is a national merit recognized student. She said her high school experience was kind of weird with so much time spent off campus, but is reaping the rewards of the Running Start program. "I'm transferring to U-Dub with most of my prerequisites done," she said. "I decided I like engineering because it combined theory and application. You're not just doing one or the other."

He finished with a 3.98 GPA, earning 90-plus college credits while participating Jackson in the Running Start Knoll program at Skagit Valley College's Oak Harbor campus. Knoll received the president's medal from Skagit Valley College for maintaining a 4.0 GPA there. He said taking computer-aided design classes got him interested in civil engineering. "I'm a math guy," he said. "I took my first couple of classes here in geometry and Algebra II, then moved on to Skagit to take calculus." Knoll also played two years of basketball at Oak Harbor and volunteers as a coach and referee for the Oak Harbor Youth Basketball Club. He works part-time at Island Pet Center.
London Cook loaded up with seven Advanced Placement classes at Oak Harbor High School and still finished with a 3.987 GPA. He plans to study math and economics at USC but first is going to travel with a group of classmates this summer to Europe with plans to visit Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands. Cook is a National Honor Society member and Ecology Club public relations officer. After returning from Europe, he will continue to work at Dugualla Bay Farms, do yard work, babysit and tutor around the community.
Ally McGuire Ally learned early on that McGuire communications might be her calling in life. "I really like people," she said. "I cannot see myself sitting for long periods of time. I need to talk." She is continuing her education at Washington State University, where she'll pursue a degree in communications. She would like to go into public relations. McGuire earned a 3.98 GPA at Oak Harbor and also played volleyball all four years. She is the public relations officer for the National Honor Society, a two-term president of the Travel Club and state competitor for DECA. On the volleyball team, she was voted most inspirational. She remembers her gift for gab would at times draw unwanted attention. "In elementary school, I think a few times my teacher would tell my parents during conferences that I had a talking problem," she said. "When I was deciding what I wanted to do with my life, one of the things I was really good at was talking, so maybe communications would be a good idea." McGuire also likes to work with kids, serving as a mentor for the boys and girls club.
A lifelong Oak Harbor resident, Jackson Knoll is headed to the University of Washington to go after a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.
Wyatt Homola is headed to the University of Washington, where he has been accepted into the School of Materials Science and Engineering.
London Cook
Hope Crandall
Homola carried a 3.978 GPA at Oak Harbor and also knew how to carry musical notes. Homola is known for his flute participation Wyatt with the Saragota Homola Chamber Orchestra and with the Fidalgo Youth Symphony and for his prowess on the alto sax in the school jazz band. He served as Ecology Club president and for a while as Senior Class president. He recently was named one of three 10th Legislative District Washington State scholars. He plans to study and develop biodegradable polymers, or as he calls them, fancy plastics. His mother is former District 2 Island County Commissioner Angie Homola. Emily Saar thrived in the classroom and on the pitching mound. As National Honor Society president, she earned a 3.971 GPA and was starting pitcher on the varsity fastpitch team the past two seasons. Saar is planning to follow in her dad Doug Saar's footsteps and become an attorney. She is headed to his old school, Gonzaga University, where she plans to double major in economics and political science. "He went to Gonzaga's law school," Emily said. "It just worked out that way. We're really close. "I don't know if I want to go to law school there. I was thinking of maybe going to Seattle University." Emily also has been a member of French Club, DECA and Link Crew in high school. Since sixth grade, she has attended religious classes at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Oak Harbor. She said she hopes to become involved in a few political campaigns while she studies in Spokane.

Keaton Dieter carried a 3.97 GPA at Oak Harbor and is planning to pursue a degree in electrical engineering at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore. Dieter will work full-time at Whidbey Golf Club this summer before shifting his focus toward college. "I've always just been good at math and science and love problem solving," he said, "so that kind of pushed me toward engineering." Matthew Jensen is bound for UCLA, where he plans to major in biology, then attend medical school to become a doctor. "I've always been interested in the field of medicine," said Jensen, who has a 3.96 GPA. "I guess saving people is sort of an overstatement. Just helping people out. The human body has always interested me. I also really like biology. Doctors have always been people I've looked up to." Jensen also was an accomplished soccer player at Oak Harbor, serving as varsity team captain for three years and starting for four. He's attended the Oak Harbor schools since kindergarten. In high school, he also was a member of the National Honor Society, Ecology Club and Key Club.

Weather forecast good for 2013 graduation ceremony
By RON NEWBERRY Staff reporter
Seasonably mild weather is forecasted for Monday night's graduation ceremony at Oak Harbor High School. Ever since the ceremony moved outdoors to the spacious Wildcat Memorial Stadium in 2008, it hasn't rained on graduation night, but weather still has made its presence. "I'd say wind is what we definitely worry about," said Joe Hunt, communications director for the Oak Harbor School District. "We've never had it rain on us." The forecast is calling for mostly sunny weather for June 10 with a 10 percent chance of rain and 10 mph winds. Oak Harbor will be graduating 370 seniors from the Class of 2013. The ceremony starts at 6 p.m. Doors open at 4:45 p.m. and will close promptly at 5:55 p.m. and remain closed until after the processional. For those unable to attend, such as parents on deployment or relatives too far away to make the trip, the graduation will be streamed live through Wildcat TV online. The link will be available at www.ohsd.net. For those attending, overflow parking will be available at Hillcrest Elementary School. Hunt pointed out that professional photographers will not be covering graduation this year. Superintendent Rick Schulte will make a speech, which likely will be his last to a large Oak Harbor public gathering before he departs for the superintendent post in Richland next month. His final day in Oak Harbor is June 30 when a handoff will be made to Lance Gibbon. An open house will be held at the district administration building to honor Schulte and his 20 years as superintendent on June 14 from 4-6 p.m. Student speakers at the graduation ceremony will be Madeline Mosolino and Christina Wicker, who each had perfect 4.0 grade-point averages in high school. The student at-large speaker will be Hailey Monroe-Glander. The ceremony also will be the last one in Oak Harbor for Hunt, who's moving to Minnesota. He's served as communications director for nine years, toting a camera in hand for

God has blessed us with you in so many ways. Always remember to soar with the eagles, not run with the chickens! memorable moments such as graduation night. He's glad the ceremony is now outdoors and no longer in the crowded, stuffy gymnasium. "By the time graduation started, it was probably 95 degrees," he said. Now, the worries are about moisture and chilly winds from the west. The winds have wreaked havoc on occasion but don't appear to be a threat this time around.
We love you SO MUCH! Mom, Dad and Tristin
