Posted online Fri., May 31 File Photo By Todd Matthews, Editor The City of Tacoma Arts Commission and Metro Parks Tacoma are inviting Tacomans to gather at Old Town Dock later this month to dedicate a new interactive public art installation that is part of the recently renovated 140-year-old pier. The event will formally unveil "Droplets," an illustrated scavenger hunt created by Tacoma artist Chandler O'Leary that challenges visitors to discover the history, importance, and beauty of this location. According to Metro Parks Tacoma officials, Old Town Dock has been host and witness to a wide variety of industries, events, neighborhood dynamics, natural history, celebrations, tragedies, and everyday narratives. O'Leary's artwork includes 24 vignettes that provide a glimpse of some of the true stories that have unfolded on or near this site over the years. The event will be held on Sun., June 16 be-
tween 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Old Town Dock, located at 2123 Schuster Parkway, on Ruston Way at McCarver Street. Live music will be provided by Pearl Django. In addition to the new artwork, visitors to the restored historic dock can enjoy views from the new benches, improved lighting, and two new slips that can moor vessels up to 40 feet and 60 feet, as well as low, free-board floats extending off the main dock to accommodate kayakers. In addition, the new dock grating increases light penetration beneath and around the dock by 30 percent to better serve the salmon population nearby. Old Town Dock was closed to the public in the summer of 2008 for a variety of safety reasons, including a deteriorating deck and structural deficiencies. The dock re-opened last month following a $2.3 million renovation.
a combination of Transportation Improvement Board funds, County Road Funds, a Public Works Trust Fund loan, real estate excise taxes and bonds, developer funds (State Environmental Policy Act mitigation contributions), and vehicle license fees. The corridor improvements included several firsts for the county. The first underground water quality vault was installed to treat and clean stormwater.
Crews also removed many concrete panels from the roadway, replacing them with asphalt. Similar replacements were ultimately made around the county. Finally, this was one of the first large-scale corridor projects that included an urban roadway section with curbs, gutters, and sidewalks to allow expanded access for pedestrians and bicyclists.
books/media, toys, and furniture. The store will create 25 new jobs in store retail, management, warehouse, custodial, and maintenance positions, according to Tacoma Goodwill officials. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Thurs., June 6 at 8:45 a.m. to mark the store's grand opening. The event will include live en-
tertainment, face painting, and light refreshments. New customers can enter an in-store contest to win a new flatscreen television, a $250 Goodwill shopping spree, and grocery store gift cards. More information is available online at tacomagoodwill.org.

HELP FIGHT HUNGER FISH FOOD BANKS OF PIERCE COUNTY
• Volunteer your time. • Donate money or stock. •Coordinate a food drive at your office, school, place of worship or social club. • Make a donation in someone’s name. • Designate FISH Food Banks through your workplace giving program.
Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food Banks Last year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wage of $7.16 it would have cost $332,260. The FISH volunteers sent food home for more than 186,000 individuals last year and deserve a hugh THANK YOU from the Board of Directors, staff and community. The families needing food can now concentrate on other aspects of their lives such as finding a job or getting training without the pains of hunger. FISH could not have made such a huge difference in our neighborhoods without you! If you wish to help FISH please call 253-383-3164 and we will direct you to a food bank. NEEDS
FOR MORE INFORMATION, TO DONATE OR TO VOLUNTEER, CALL 253-383-3164. P.O. Box 99847, Lakewood WA 98499 Email: fishfoodbanks@harbornet.com
A new location for a food bank is needed. Currently one of our food banks is located at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Trinity was very kind to let us utilize their church on a temporary basis, one and a half years ago, and now we need a larger location. If anyone knows of a location with about 1,000 sq ft from South 25th to North 25th and from Yakima to the Sound please give FISH Central a call at 383-3164.
