rare to have a baby this small, but to have two tiny babies, and for them to do so well, is very surprising.” Batra said technology enables neonatologists to keep babies alive that are over 500 grams. The first month of life of the premature child is his focus. What Cissy didn’t know during her first pregnancy was that she had “textbook preeclampsia.” Preeclampsia is a life-threatening disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period. With preeclampsia, the mother will often have a rapid rise in blood pressure that can lead to seizure, stroke, multiple organ failure and death of the mother and/or baby. Carl said his wife is perfectly fine and fit, but with both pregnancies, her blood pressure
Representatives from the city of Issaquah recently tried to assure their neighbors to the north there’s no reason to worry about the potential injection of stormwater runoff into an aquifer that serves 54,000 Sammamish residents. Speaking on behalf of the Issaquah mayor’s office at the May 20 Sammamish City Council meeting, Dan Ervin, vice president of RH2 Engineering, Inc., told councilmembers the practice is widely used. “This is a very conventional stormwater disposal device,” Ervin said. “There are hundreds, thousands of these throughout western Washington. Virtually every community has a similar situation — this facility that’s under discussion tonight is neither unusual nor unique.” The “facility” Ervin referred to is the Lower Reid Infiltration Gallery, or LRIG — a controversial football-field shaped piece of land at the foot of the Issaquah Highlands. The piece of property, called a vadose zone, uses sand and gravel to naturally filtrate contaminants before they reach an underground aquifer. Issaquah, which owns the LRIG, is seeking a permit from the Department of Ecology to continue a testing program for an undetermined amount of time where it would be allowed

weeks, and in those last crucial weeks, the lungs are developing. “These are pretty small babies,” said neonatologist Dr. Maneesh Batra who took care of both girls. “In the US, 12 percent of all births are pre-term, but (those weighing) under 1,000 grams make up 2 percent. So this is very

to inject stormwater into the aquifer — a practice Ecology forced the city to stop in 2008 after finding a high level of contaminants. The Sammamish Plateau Water & Sewer District has voiced its concerns over the return to such a practice — largely because it has three wells nearby, including one 600 feet downhill. Ervin told the Sammamish Council that Issaquah has monitored the stormwater since it was forced to cease injection. He said recent tests have returned minimal positive results in two areas of concern — iron and total coliform. Out of 27 samples, he said two exceeded the drinking water standard for iron and one for total coliform. Ervin explained the city’s next step is to prove to Ecology it can eliminate all coliform through filtration. “If we can show through an enhanced monitoring program and continued operation that we routinely can remove any
coliform that might be present, then the presumption is we’ll be able to operate the facility,” he said. Gail Twelves, a consultant for the Sammamish Plateau Water & Sewer District, said she was concerned Ervin made no mention of fecal coliform — a contaminant she said is the largest offender from the Highlands. “Fecal coliform is from poop and it carries a whole host of viruses and diseases attached to it and it can remain virulent in ground water for months,” she said. “Fecal coliform is also a very small particle that passes through sand/gravel soil very easily.” Twelves said District results showed fecal coliform at 5,000 Colony Forming Units, or live bacteria — a number she says is off the charts. Concerned with the Issaquah’s presentation, several Sammamish councilmembers asked questions, including about the sustainability of the LRIG. “I’m looking at all this stuff going in there, after 10 or 15, 20 years how will you change the filter?” asked Tom Vance. Ervin said it is very unlikely the system would plug in the next 10 to 20 years. Councilmember Nancy Whitten wasn’t fond of the response. “I’m really puzzled how you can say this an infiltration system and it’s going to last forever,” she said. “This is our drinking source, we want our water source to last as long as our homes last.” Ervin assured the council the Department of Ecology is filling its legal watchdog role and nothing unsafe will be done. “I’m not going to ask you to trust me, especially because this might be different from what you heard, but trust Ecology and trust the process,” he said. “This is a very conventional thing that is happening and Ecology has it well in control.”

shot up. With Ella, the older daughter, Cissy had early contractions and bleeding. The first red flag was that Cissy had just seen her doctor at 25 weeks and noted that there had not been significant growth since the previous visit. The doctors gave her a shot to boost Ella’s lung development, but when she got back home, the contractions and bleeding continued. She had a blood clot in the womb, so they went to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, which had her promptly whisked to the University of Washington hospital because there was concern over the baby’s survival. “Since it’s a learning hospital, residents surrounded Ella,” Carl said. “Her eyes opened and she looked around, but she couldn’t cry because her lungs weren’t developed.” Ella had challenges. Her aorta was small and there was bleeding on her brain. Ella was then whisked to Children’s Hospital where she remained for two and one-half months, then another two months at Overlake. The due date for Ella was May 16, 2006 - she was born Feb. 16, 2006. With Emma, Cissy and Carl were already prepared for what could happen. At her 24-week checkup, Cissy was told to pay attention to how she felt — back pain, headaches, blood pressure issues — everything. Carl checked her blood pressure, and sure enough it was high. They went to the fire station in the Issaquah Highlands just down the road from their home and had her blood pressure taken again, which confirmed that she needed to go to the hospital. She had a “C” section, as she had with Ella, and this

time it went much better. Emma cried when she was born, and had no serious medical issues other than being very small. Emma remained at UW hospital for two months, then was transferred to Overlake. She came home April 24, one day after her due date. “I feel we are blessed because we had so many good doctors,” Carl said. Both Carl and Cissy were allowed to pick up their daughters even when they were in the incubator, and even bathe them. Kangaroo care, where there is skin to skin contact with the parents, was encouraged. Before discharging both babies, the couple left with a “road map” of care — a
full book of what to do, and where to go for help. Now, Ella is taking swimming and piano lessons, and she loves to draw. She played soccer for two years, and she is learning to speak Chinese, her parent’s native language. While waiting for her baby sister to come home, she penned a very sweet letter to Emma, in tidy penmanship. “Dear Emma, I hope you come home soon and I’m your big sister and you’re my little sister. I’m glad that I have a little sister to play with. Sincerely, Ella.” Staff writer Linda Ball can be reached at 425-391-0363, ext. 5052

Issaquah native, bombing victim recognized in Seattle event BY LINDA BALL LBALL@ISSAQUAHREPORTER.COM
Issaquah native Adrianne Haslet-Davis, 32, who lost her foot and part of her leg in the Boston Marathon bombing, will be honored at a community event June 1 at Seattle Center, in the Center House on the big hardwood dance floor. “Adrianne is someone we know because we all train at the same forums, so this really hit close to home,” said TJ Lacy, Arthur Murray Dance Schools general manager in Seattle. The event is a free public dance co-sponsored by Seattle Center and Arthur Murray Dance Schools of Puget Sound. It will be held from 5-8 p.m. Haslet-Davis is a dance instructor at Arthur Murray in Boston. With her husband, Adam Davis, who had just returned from deployment in Afghanistan, they were sitting in front of the second bomb at the marathon. Davis was injured by shrapnel. Arthur Murray School of Dance will host the dance, provide group classes and give dance lesson vouchers for any donation made online directly to Adrianne’s “GoFundMe.com/Adrianne” account. There will be an opportunity to donate online to her or other victims of the bombing on laptops set up at the event. Lacy said they are also welcoming donations to Wounded Warriors, because of

Texas proves oil and water do mix
T
here’s an old saying that oil and water don’t mix. That may be true, but apparently they coexist quite well. Traveling through Sweetwater in west Texas, you see an interesting mix of irrigated farming, cattle ranching, oil production and wind energy. Farmers draw water from wells to irrigate fields and provide drinking water for people and livestock. Scattered across those same fields are traditional oil wells that have been pumping crude since 1921. Less than 10 miles from Sweetwater is the Roscoe Wind Farm — 627 wind turbines standing in irrigated cotton and hay fields, wheat fields, and cattle pastures. The $1 billion project is one of the world’s largest wind farms with a capacity of 781.5 MW — enough to power 250,000 homes. Texans say this shows that clean water, renewable energy and oil production can coexist. It’s a matter of geology. Water wells average about 600 feet deep while traditional crude oil is extracted from 2,500 to 8,500 feet beneath the surface. Fracking occurs even further down. Texas is experiencing a new oil boom. Oil production has doubled since 2005, and it’s poised to double again by 2020. More than 250,000 Texans work in the oil and gas industry earning an average of $100,000 a year. While much of Sweetwater’s success has come from traditional oil wells, future prosperity may come from fracking. The area is home to the massive Cline Formation, a 9,800 square mile reservoir of shale oil 9,500 feet beneath the surface — more than a mile and half below the water table. Based on their experience, Texans believe they can use fracking to extract new oil while protecting farmland and water supplies. In contrast to the Texas oil boom, oil production in Cal-
ifornia is down 21 percent since 2001. This is not because California is running out of oil. To the contrary, California has huge offshore reserves and an estimated 15 billion barrels of shale oil in a deposit southeast of San Francisco. But shale oil is recoverable only through hydraulic fracking, and California has banned the practice. Despite its 9 percent unemployment rate and heavy debt load, California has locked away billions of dollars in oil reserves. Compare that with North Dakota, which enjoys a $1.6 billion surplus and a 3.3 percent jobless rate. So what’s the point? Thanks to new drilling techniques and technology, we can now safely recover billions of barrels of oil that were previously out of reach. With our national debt set to pass $17 trillion, energy production is a way to put Americans back to work, fund essential government programs and chip away at our horrendous national debt. The International Energy Agency says the U.S. could become the world’s largest oil producer in the second half of this decade and could be nearly self-sufficient by 2035. Oil and natural gas account for 1.7 million family-wage jobs and is projected to grow to 3 million by the end of this decade and to 3.5 million by 2035. Shale energy development has already contributed nearly $62 billion in federal, state and local tax revenues and could generate another $2.5 trillion by 2035. The bottom line is oil and natural gas wells can safely coexist alongside farming and drinking water supplies. We can have a healthy environment and economic prosperity if we insist that our government allow exploration and extraction to occur. Don Brunell is the president of the Association of Washington Business.

Crossing party lines for climate change
Calendar Things to do in Issaquah and Sammamish
BY LINDA BALL LBALL@ISSAQUAHREPORTER.COM
A group called Eastside Organizers, a local chapter of Organizing For Action, a nonprofit established to support President Obama’s agenda, held a rally Wednesday in front of Congressman Dave Reichert’s office in Issaquah, to bring awareness to climate change and the consequences earth faces if Americans don’t cut back on consumption of fossil fuels. The irony is that Reichert is a republican. They were not there to chastise the congressman, rather to thank him. Reichert has said on the record that he supports an amendment stating that, “Congress accepts the scientific findings of the EPA that climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for public health and welfare.” The group chanted “Thank you Reichert, climate change, climate change, what’s your plan?” Sandra Castell, is the volunteer team leader of the group, the largest and most active OFA group in Washington State. Eastside Organizers encompasses District 8 and includes Sammamish and Issaquah. She said this 113th Congress is even more obstinate than the last. “We’re going to hold them accountable now,” Castell said. “Climate change is real.” She said 468 out of 535 members of Congress are up for re-election and that 20 percent of them are climate deniers. The group then read off a list of all the climate deniers, followed by “shame on you.” “We’re calling them all out on climate change,” she said. “There’s potential here for real legislation.”

Council supports state transportation proposal The Issaquah City Council has passed a resolution encouraging state lawmakers to approve a proposed 12-year, $9.5 billion package of transportation improvements. “Washington State’s transportation system is suffering from disrepair, with a backlog of maintenance and preservation needs, and data showing that without any new investments, more than half the pavement on our state roads and highways will be in poor condition by 2023,” the resolution states. The proposed state package includes funding for highway corridor projects throughout the state and a direct gas tax distribution that would provide new funding each year for Issaquah to maintain local roadways and arterials. The council stated that the package also needs to include Interstate 90 improvements in and around Issaquah before it is finalized.

Lombardi’s in Issaquah closing after 22 years BY linda ball lball@issaquahreporter.com
After three floods, the sinking of the I-90 bridge and 22 years of food, fun and camaraderie, Lombardi’s Italian restaurant in Issaquah is saying goodbye. It’s not personal. Owner Diane Symms said the entire property her restaurant sits on is going to be redeveloped thanks to the passing of the Central Issaquah Plan, which will allow multi-story use. The 7-acre parcel is for sale. “The landlords were not willing to sign a new lease,” Symms said. “And, we could not find an affordable building to buy. We’d like to stay in Issaquah, but there’s no affordable property.” She knew this was coming, so she started shopping around and found a “perfect” piece of property in Mill Creek. She opened Lombardi’s there in September 2012, adding to her Everett location which just celebrated 15 years of waterfront dining. Symms sold her Ballard restaurant in 2010 after 23 years. “It’s (Mill Creek) doing well — it’s a great location,” she said. It wasn’t easy getting the Issaquah restaurant open originally. Five days before Symms was scheduled to open, Issaquah Creek flooded the place. It was the second flood that year. She had just put in new hardwood floors, and had to do them all over again. Then, the I-90 floating bridge sank.
The staff of Lombardi’s are, from left, bartender and assistant manager Miguel Sanchez, chef Juan Sanchez, sous chef Mauro Ortiz, owner Diane Symms, manager Janel Jacobson and “pizza magic man,” Gabby Gonzalez. linda ball, Issaquah & Sammamish Reporter
Issaquah creek makes two 90 degree turns near Lombardi’s. With an early deep snow, followed by a pineapple express, Lombardi’s is at the mercy of the creek. Symms said she was flooded again in 1996 and 2009. The water reached 3-feet in the restaurant one time.
“I had FEMA insurance, but they weren’t going to pay all of the claim,” she said. She sued the federal government and won, but it took two years off of her life she said. Symms won’t miss the floods, but she will miss her customers. A group of teachers from the area come every Friday night for happy hour. One group of locals have
met for what they call “Martini Tuesday” for all 22 years. “We have wonderful employees — some are coming to Mill Creek, but others won’t because of the commute,” Symms said. She said she will still honor her $10 off dinner-for-two for folks holding tickets to Village Theater, an offer she has had for many years. Symms said she will also miss their patio, and the beauty of Issaquah, but she’s taking her olive trees with her. Symms’ daughter, Kerri Lonergan-Dreke, who has worked in the business with her mother for 26 years, and is now her partner, will slowly take over the helm at the remaining restaurants. “I’m looking at one step closer to retirement,” Symms said. Over the years she has also been taking about 16 people to Italy in the fall on a personalized tour, visiting wineries and some of her food connections. This year, Lonergan will go instead, as the group visits Rome, Naples and the Amalfi coast. Customers will still be able to enjoy favorites such as chicken marsala, tortellini gorgonzola, fresh salmon picatta and homemade tiramisu until July 28 when Symms will close the doors for good. “I believe the key to being successful is excellent food, made from scratch, good value, personalized service, friendly service – and servers and staff who appreciate the customer,” Symms said.

Little School, big lessons Students in art class at The Little School are encouraged to express their understanding in innovative ways. At this independent school in Bellevue, fourth-graders recently took a creative approach to their science learning about the physics of sound. They formed art teams to discuss plans for constructing sound contraptions and collaborated on a group sketch. Students put a playful twist into their drawings by incorporating repurposed materials. Problem solving ways to construct sound makers often required students to rethink and revise their original
designs. As the art teams progressed through each creative stage, from idea generation to design drawing to preliminary construction to revision and final construction, their work required an open mind, seeing other points of view and analyzing possibilities, all useful skills for art class and beyond. Integrating creative experiences with topics in math, science, social studies and literature provides opportunities for students to share their innovative ideas. In addition, students magnify their learning as they present curricular content in another context.
Safety on the roads is always a priority, but it is even more important once summer arrives and the school year ends. The constant comings and goings of children in the street and the increased presence of pedestrians and cyclists are all the reasons you need to be more cautious than ever. Once summer day camp begins, it will be common to see large groups of children walking through town. Car drivers should reduce their speed as soon as they see such a group. Drivers should also take care in residential areas, near schools, playgrounds, public swimming pools, and parks. Text messages should never be sent while driving and phone calls should be made from the side of the road. It only takes a moment of distraction when looking at your cell phone for a serious accident to SEE NEXT PAGE

Issaquah, Skyline, Eastlake find podium spots at state track meet State track and field trophies were awarded at the 4A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma Stadium in Tacoma last weekend and a handful of Issaquah and Sammamish preps found themselves on the podium. Eastlake’s Troy Lewis was fifth in the 200 meter dash in a time of 22.43 seconds and Daniel Brady was fourth in the triple jump for the Wolves at 43-08.5, the highest finisher for a KingCo competitor in the event. Trevon Clark was sixth for Skyline in the 400 in 49.46. Clark anchored a team with Lorenzo Agogliati, Blake Young and Andrew Millett in the 400 meter relay that finished fourth in 3:21.84. Skyline’s Keegan Symmes finished third in the 1600 in 4:17.13 and was ninth in the 3200 and teammate Garret Corlis was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 168-10. On the girls side, Ellie Woerner was the runner up in the finals of the 100 meter hurdles for Eastlake, finishing in 14.82. Woerner also made the finals in the 300 hurdles and finished eighth. McKenna Hogan was also sixth in the triple jump for Issaquah with a mark of 36-08.25 and had the same finish in the long jump with a mark of 17-07.5. Geneva Ecola also competed in the event for Skyline with a mark of 15-11.75 in the finals. Gabrielle Gevers finished sixth in the 100 for Issaquah in 12.61. Issaquah’s Grace En-
It was an all-KingCo final in the 4A girls doubles state tournament in Richland Saturday as Issaquah’s Sam Garrard and Kelsey Wilson finished their season in the title match, falling to Fiona Cerf and Alexia Fife from Garfield in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). The Eagles’ pair won their first match of the tournament 2-1 over Cindy Park and Crystal Lee of Thomas Jefferson before taking quarterfinal and semi-final matches in straight sets to advance to the championship.

Eastlake golfers win state championship, Wang second Li Wang finished as the runnerup in the 4A boys state golf tournament for the second straight year, this time leading his Eastlake team to the scoring championship for the first time in school history. Wang shot 70-76-146 and was finished the day two strokes behind Brian Humphreys of Camas and lead a trio of Division I bound Wolves on day two. stroke deficit to Humphreys at the turn, many young golfers may have allowed complacency to set in. “He’s set a good example for everybody,” Bangasser said of the Yale-bound Wang. “Li is a worker.” Spencer Weiss ended the tournament in a tie for eighth place after a two day total of 152. His second day round of 74 matched Humphreys, who along with Wang and Eddie Abellar of Union ended the first round in a three-way tie at 70. Will Sharp, who is headed to
Gonzaga, cracked the top-25 with a 77-80-157 and future Arizona State Sun Devil Josh Grace made the cut to finish in the to-40 with an 80-86166 as the Wolves ran away from second place Kentridge by nearly 30 points. Like Wang, Bangasser said Sharp, Weiss and Grace remained focused despite adversity to help the program claim its first state golf crown. “They gutted it out,” he said. “People wonder what you do when you’re a golf coach and these kids
are so good. We spend 90 percent of our time on the mental approach and it is rewarding to see it.”
