Port of Tacoma staff developed a public access plan in accordance with the City of Tacoma's Shoreline Master Program in an effort to ensure a predictable and streamlined shoreline permitting process. In addition, Port of Tacoma Commissioners Connie Bacon and Don Meyer attended five meetings with Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland and Tacoma City Councilmember Ryan Mello to share visibility and coordinate the Port of Tacoma's draft public access plan with the City of Tacoma's Shoreline Master Program and Public Access Alternatives Plan, according to Port of Tacoma staff. Following more discussions, the City of Tacoma and the Port of Tacoma

have drafted an Interlocal Agreement (ILA) that authorizes a flexible approach to shoreline public access provisions including a fee-in-lieu option. The Port of Tacoma Commission is scheduled to discuss the issue during a study session on Thurs., May 30 at noon in Room 104 of The Fabulich Center, located at 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. A joint study session between the Port of Tacoma and the City of Tacoma is tentatively scheduled for Tues., June 11. The Port of Tacoma Commission is expected to take final action on the matter later this summer.

Tacoma's Franklin Park reopens June 6 with new sprayground, walking trails Image Courtesy Metro Parks Tacoma Metro Parks Tacoma will mark the completion of a wide range of improvements to Franklin Park in the city's Central Tacoma neighborhood. Some of the new park project amenities include a new sprayground, expanded community garden, new walking trails, plaza space, and a picnic shelter. The work was funded by an $84.3 million parks improvement bond measure approved by the citizens of Tacoma in November 2005. The public is invited to participate in a celebration on Thurs., June 6 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Franklin Park, located at 1201 S. Puget Sound Ave. Franklin Park covers an area of more than 20 acres extending from Lawrence Street to Puget Sound and from South 12th to South 16th. The majority of the land was a gift to the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma from the West End Playground Association in 1937 for a "perpetual public park and playground." The new park was named Franklin Park due to its proximity to Franklin Elementary School. More information is available online at metroparkstacoma.org/franklin-park/.

WSDOT accepting grant applications for airport projects

Posted online Tues., May 28 The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is now accepting applications for the first round of 2013-2015 airport grants. During this round, WSDOT anticipates awarding an unprecedented $2 million in grants, which is about a $1 million increase over typical rounds. "More funding gives us the opportunity to target some very important needs at our state's airports," said WSDOT director of aviation Tristan Atkins. "This is good news for our transportation system and economy." To apply, airport sponsors can fill out the application online. Airport Aid Grant Assurances are now required to be submitted with the application package. Applications are due no later than 5 p.m. on Fri., June 21. Qualifying projects should be targeted for completion over the next 12 to 24 months. Eligible projects may include work beginning after July 1, 2013. WSDOT will announce grant award recipients the week of July 15, 2013. Gov. Jay Inslee's recently-signed transportation budget provided a one-time, $1.5 million increase to WSDOT's Airport Aid Grant Program for the next biennium. The increase includes existing funds in the state's aeronautics account, which come from aviation fuel fees and a portion of the state aircraft registration fee/excise taxes. The next grant cycle will begin in June 2014 with an anticipated $1.5 million available. Airport sponsors can use the recently updated WSDOT Airport Aid Grant Procedures Manual. The update incorporates the new state grant assurances and provides links to online resources, a project schedule, a revised grant application and templates.
