The principal and an official with the Lake Washington School District looked on as more students joined the crowd out on the football field. More than 100 students protested the dismissal of their beloved security

guard Jeff Lewis. “Bring Jeff back!” the crowd cheered, while others chanted, “Jeff is an awesome guy, [the] accusations are a lie!” At the end of the day about 500 had signed a petition to bring the former Staff Star back. “Our school really isn’t the same place without him,” said student Ryan Keyes, co-organizer of the student-led walkout. “Everybody looked up to him.” Last March, Lewis was recognized as an exem-

plary staff member. “[Jeff ] looks the part of a tough, no-nonsense security guard. But once you spend a little bit of time with him, you see the gentler side. You see a man who cares a lot about the students, staff and school where he works,” stated the district article written about Lewis when he received the Staff Star recognition. Police seize electronics that may contain child porn from home during search BY CARRIE RODRIGUEZ AND RAECHEL DAWSON Kirkland Reporter

Kirkland and Seattle police seized some electronics from a Kirkland home the morning of May 21 that police be-

lieve may contain child pornography. Kirkland police and the Seattle Internet Crime Against Children Task Force served a joint search warrant at the home in the 13000

block of 129th Ave. NE in Kirkland’s Evergreen Hill neighborhood. Kirkland police Sgt. Rob Saloum said he was unsure exactly what devices were seized, but that detectives would “most likely” be

looking for “some type of child pornography.” Seattle police will assist Kirkland police by conducting the digital forensic examination of the electronic devices that were seized, said Seattle

police Capt. Tag Gleason, who declined to comment on the case. A neighbor reported seeing a resident in handcuffs, however Saloum said that police may restrain residents during the search

warrant process. “At this point, no arrests [have been] made until they get a chance to look at some forensic evidence,” said Saloum, adding that this is an active investigation.

While it is unknown when, why or how Lewis or the school district decided he wouldn’t be coming back, the students and staff recently found out and have taken great strides to change the district’s mind. Students have held walkouts and they’ve spoken at school board meetings and given out accompanying letters. An incident between Lewis and a female student occurred on Jan. 23. Corporal Deb McGuire with the Kirkland Police Department was called to the school for an assault complaint from the girl’s mother. According to the police report, the female student was sitting atop of a lunch table when Lewis told her to get down. After some time, he walked by again and noticed she and her friend were still on top of the table. Lewis once again told the girls to get down. The girl said in the police report she didn’t think much of what he said because she was talking to her friend. She avoided eye contact with Lewis as he told her to go to the office. She said he “grabbed her by the left upper arm” while doing so. The girl went to throw napkins in the garbage and Lewis again grabbed her by the arm but she “twisted away,” the police report continues. At that point, she said Lewis grabbed her backpack, causing the contents to spill on the floor. When she went to pick them up, she said he “pushed her into the door of the attendance office and told her to sit on

Senior Brian Brooks agreed. “He was the best security guard. Lots of kids would say he was one in one million; he was more like one in one billion. He was perfect for the school,” he said. Brooks added that Lewis “saved lots of kids from being delinquent. He worked with these kids with respect more than punishment.” Students and one teacher also attended a LWSD school board meeting on May 20 to try to convince Superintendent Traci Pierce that Lewis isn’t a bad guy and they want him back. “[Jeff ’s] presence made me feel much safer at Juanita, because I knew that he had all the students’ best interest in mind and he would do whatever he could to make us feel safe and welcome at our school,” wrote student Colin Pate. “Every incident that he handled was dealt with smoothly and calmly, with minimal disruption of the learning environment.” However, the girl’s mother Mercete Gogo feels different. “He had no right to put his hands on my daughter and he did it extensively as well,” Gogo said, who is a surgical technician in the U.S. Army. “The only thing I wanted to see was him be reprimanded – he put marks on my daughter’s arm.” Gogo noted the day the incident occurred, students had finals and an early dismissal at noon. She said all the students had lunch during the same period that day and her daughter sat on a table with a friend because the cafeteria was crowded. “She was roughly, physically handled by Mr. Lewis just for sitting on a table. That’s why she was in trouble that day,” said Gogo. “I don’t know what he had going on that day, but he had some issues obviously because he hovered over my daughter and the physical

contact wasn’t necessary at all. My daughter said she could see in his eyes that there was something else going on with him.” She said Lewis grabbed her daughter’s arm and “roughed her up,” causing her to drop her paperwork. When her daughter bent over to pick up her papers, “[Lewis] grabbed her backpack,” said Gogo. “He grabbed and jerked her and then shoved her into the door of the office. I’m surprised nobody saw it … She was grabbed by Mr. Lewis but sent back to class in tears.” She added that Lewis allegedly put his fist below her daughter’s breast area, as the police report said. When Gogo went to the school to pick up her daughter, she was in tears. “Had [school officials] investigated further or let staff know what was going on I believe they would have been able to call me,” she said. “They clearly didn’t know what was going on until I got there.” When she went into the school office, she said Lewis “was being this big bad guy with his chin up. He just stood there and aggravated the situation even more.” However, Lewis told McGuire in the police report that when Gogo walked to the office with her daughter he heard her say, “Not only is he a bad ass, he’s a fat ass too.” After McGuire questioned her, Gogo took her daughter to the EvergreenHealth Medical Center emergency room for an evaluation. “It was pretty disturbing because he had his fingerprints on her arm, [which] was noted at Evergreen,” said Gogo, adding that she took photos of the alleged fingerprints on her daughter’s arm at the advice of a social worker. She mentioned the assistant principal also took photos of her daughter’s arm from her iPhone.

But McGuire’s police report contradicts Gogo’s story. “The only redness I could see was from her rubbing her own arm,” said McGuire in her police report when she asked to see the girl’s arm. “There were no other visible marks, bruises or fingerprints.” Nonetheless, Gogo pulled her daughter out of Juanita High School in February. “I didn’t know what was going on with [Lewis]. I guess it’s confidential, [the district] didn’t tell me anything at all,” she said, adding that some students were also harassing her daughter. She said she recently received a voice message from the district reassuring her that officials took some action with Lewis, but couldn’t specify what that was. She said she is “happy” the district has taken action and that Lewis is no longer a security guard at the school. Gogo said she consulted with an attorney early on in the process and now that the district has taken some action, it “solidifies” her legal course that she wants to take against the school district.

Totem Lake lights serve purpose This is in response to two recent letters concerning the red light tickets by the EvergreenHealth Medical Center. First, Ms. Jane Peterson, the Totem Lake Transit center isn’t a rarely used bus station. I’m not sure what time of day you were there, but there are buses leaving and arriving there every five minutes. A lot of the people using the transportation center are seeking services at the hospital or surrounding area. Second, have you ever thought why there are not very many accidents there? Have you ever pondered the idea of why there is a no-turn-on-red sign there? Why don’t you go ride a bus leaving from the transit center? Then maybe you might understand why it is there! Buses leaving from the center are prompted by a green light! Therefore, if you were to turn on a red light, and a bus was leaving there at the same time, there would be a horrific accident! There have been plenty of accidents before at that intersection, that’s why there is this rule. Next time you are at this intersection open your eyes and look around at all the things happening around you. And be thankful that you only got a ticket for not obeying this law, and that you didn’t lose your life or cause someone else to lose theirs.

but not least, the updating of Kirkland’s Comprehensive Plan, Kirkland citizens of all stripes need to step up and get involved. Not just to stymie (similar to what happened to the scrappy developer of Potala Village), but to create a new Kirkland. Sorry, NIMBY homeowners: This is not the sleepy bedroom community of yore, nor will it ever be, again. Hodgins aptly described the old Kirkland as “a somewhat dull and dowdy, and dare I say, boring” hamlet. Now 80,000-strong, the new Kirkland deserves to have a “Waterfront Business District” and a “Main Business District” in Totem Lake! We are one city now and should start acting like it. Banish the waxing nostalgic, the fighting of petty turf wars, the moving of the goal posts whenever a developer capitulates to Mayberrystyle protectionism and threatens to actually build something. Thanks to a clear-thinking judge, the Potala Village developer has survived running the gauntlet known as the “Kirkland Process.” Only Emmett and Floyd down at the Mayberry barber shop would characterize Potala Village as a “highrise development,” one that should be shunned (“Shunned, I tell you!”). The next question is: who will step up to upgrade or demolish the sad but persistent little businesses that remain strung along Lake Street, like weeds, just across the street from our beautiful lakefront parks?

Roger Clarke-Johnson, Kirkland

Step up, Keeping Kirkland citizens Kirkland quaint Recent letters from Sean Hodgins (“Kirkland has changed for the better,” May 17), Chuck Pilcher (“Cannot afford to risk the city’s future, May 24) and Roger Lowe (“City wasted taxpayer money on moratoriums,” May 24) point to one inescapable conclusion: Kirkland is changing. With the annexation of “those people” north of Totem Lake, the upcoming relocation of the Public Safety Building out of the (former) Central Business District, and last

We applaud Chuck Pilcher and his letter to the editor on May 24. He captured the essence of what is positive about the waterfront area and the desire to retain it as “our greatest asset,” while not compromising it with over-development. Kirkland’s waterfront is truly unique. It’s what makes our community one of the most livable in the state. His point that the true “Central Business District” has moved geographically north and east to center on Totem Lake

is correct. With a world class hospital anchoring the area and the renewed development that will result from the addition of city facilities, Totem Lake really does resonate as Kirkland’s core. This frees the Central/Market/ Lake/Kirkland avenues to refocus on the village atmosphere that attracts visitors, shoppers and residents. Zoning regulations need to celebrate this difference. This causes us to rethink what we are doing in Moss Bay and surrounding areas. It seems as though the city supports construction projects whether they fit into the neighborhood environment or not. Traffic problems and safety issues are neglected or hide behind calculations that do not reflect the true impact of proposed construction. The infrastructure simply cannot take all of the developments that are being passed by the city development teams. We see regulations bent and developers coddled in pursuit of the tax dollar, but this is short-sighted. Remember, once a building is built, it changes the character of an area forever. Zoning needs to better reflect the impacts of development in different Kirkland neighborhoods. We applaud everyone who is taking time to revisit the goals and wording in the Comprehensive Plan. It is an important document that could set the stage for our approach to growth over the next

decades. At the same time, we need to push on our elected officials to make sure that the tenets of this plan are coded in zoning and regulations and that we do not accept empty promises by developers who try to skirt the desires of the people.

Lisa and Brian Rohrback, Kirkland

getting on board as did the Planning Commission and Kirkland City Council when they reconfirmed these policies and updated the Comprehensive Plan in 2011. Hopefully not too much has been lost in the past decade while these policies sat.

Matt Gregory, Kirkland

Kirkland staff Other city and council departments screwed up finally get on How wrong can Mr. board with park Lowe be? He’s angry, Are Kirkland Parks and Community Services members just now reading the Comprehensive Plan about Totem Lake? It says in policy TL15.3: “The city should acquire Totem Lake. To ensure that the quality of Totem Lake and its buffers are preserved through regular maintenance, the city should seek to acquire and manage this resource.” Goal TL-15: “Enhance the natural condition and function of Totem Lake.” The Reporter’s recent article regarding planning for a Totem Lake Park is an encouragement for all the Planning commissioners who have worked on the Totem Lake neighborhood since 2000. As one of the past chairs of the Totem Lake task force back then and a past commissioner for 10 years, many of us encouraged this language to grasp this natural resource for the betterment of the city. It is great to see the other departments finally

uninformed and going public with opinions, not facts. Are more and longer traffic jams being created by bad regulations that were created by our existing planning staff ? Are property values being adversely affected? Basically, staff and this council screwed up. The moratorium was an opportunity for them to correct their mistake(s). Regulations regarding new development need to be improved. They were not. State regulations (the Growth Management Act) state existing residents’ rights must be honored whenever new development is proposed that jeopardizes those rights and the conditions under which their properties were established. Staff didn’t do it before the moratorium, nor are they protecting existing residential properties now.

This is a once-a-year fundraiser and fun to do it with other people.” The Century route (100 miles) could be challenging for riders who have not participated in such a long ride before. “I feel OK now since it’s over. ven rainy weather does not stop residents of the Seattle area from peddling. On Memorial Day, more than 1,200 bike-riders from all over the Puget Sound area gathered at Marina Park in Kirkland to participate in the 7 Hills of Kirkland ride. The annual fundraiser event has been held for more than a decade to support the homeless community in King County. The event was put on by KITH (Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing), a charity that helps homeless people. KITH provides transitional housing to individuals and families who are homeless until they can find permanent housing. KITH currently owns 35 houses in Kirkland and Bellevue jointly with a nonprofit called

Housing at the Crossroads, according to Jennifer Barron, executive director of KITH. The 7 Hills of Kirkland is one of the largest annual fundraising events for KITH, and it is crucial for sustaining their services. Barron said they were “hoping to raise $70,000” at Monday’s event. “Cycling is a great way for the community to get involved, to learn about KITH, and to know that we are doing something good,” Barron said. The event raised funds through participants’ registration fees. Riders who registered on the day of the event paid $50 to $60, depending on the routes they chose. Those who pre-registered early by mail or online saved up to $20. Participants had three choices of routes: 7 Hills (40 miles), Metric Century (60 miles), or Century (100 miles).

Police Blotter The blotter feature is both a description of a small selection of police incidents and a statistical round-up of all calls to the Kirkland Police Department that are dispatched to on-duty police officers. The Kirkland Reporter police blotter is not intended to be representative of all police calls originating in Kirkland, which average about 1,000 per week. Between May 17-23, the Kirkland Police Department reported 484 traffic violations (seven DUIs), 22 traffic accidents, five animal calls, 30 alarm calls, 18 noise complaints, 15 calls of disturbance, 14 thefts, five car prowls, 12 calls of civil disturbance, four reported burglaries, eight domestic violence calls, five calls for harassment, two reports of illegal drugs, four alleged assaults, 10 acts of fraud and four malicious mischief

reports. At least 37 people were arrested.

May 23 Weapons: 8:17 p.m., 11700 block of NE 60th St. Washington State Patrol responded to reports of a man pointing a gun at cars at an I-405 freeway bridge. However, state patrol determined the man was taking photos with a camera.

May 22 Obstruction: 11:40 p.m., 10800 block of NE 124th St. A 24-year-old man was taken into custody for not identifying himself and disobeying commands from a police officer. Police found drug paraphernalia after his arrest. Trespass: 12:15 a.m., 7800 block of 132nd Ave. NE. A 23-year-old man was arrested for criminal trespass after a resident observed him lurking in a front yard. The man was uncooperative and had no explanation why he was on the property.

May 21 Assault: 3:30 p.m., 1800 block of First St. A

52-year-old man was arrested for assaulting an old family friend. The suspect showed up at the other man’s residence unannounced for the first time in 25 years and assaulted him. The reason was that his friend “is an alcoholic and needs to get his life together,”the police report said.

May 18 Domestic violence: 2:28 a.m., 5500 block of Lakeview Dr. Two brothers - a 24-year-old and a 21-year-old - were arrested for punching each other in the face.

May 17 Disturbance: 2:40 a.m., 200 block of Kirkland Ave. A 26-year-old woman was arrested after she walked into the Heathman Hotel intoxicated and out of control. The hotel manager reported the woman was speaking in a made-up language before she grabbed the manager’s lapel and head-butted her. The woman broke vases, goblets and coffee cups before exiting from the emergency exit, screaming profanities and that she was Wiccan in front of the hotel.
