Rate increase looms for ferry riders By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter

Riding state ferries is likely to become a bit more expensive. In an attempt to meet revenue goals set by the state Legislature, officials from Washington State Ferries are proposing fare increases over the next two years. Officials are considering two rounds of fare increases. The first would be a 3 percent increase in vehicle fares and a 2 percent increase in passenger fares that would take effect Oct. 1, 2013. The second would be 2.5 percent increase in vehicle fares and a 2 percent increase in passenger fares that would take effect May 1, 2014. Based on the current peak-season fares, the fare for a driver and car on the Coupeville ferry route would go from $10.25 to $10.82. The fare for a driver and car on the Clinton ferry route would go from $7.75 to $8.18. Ferry officials presented their fare proposal last week at a Washington State Transportation Commission meeting. The transportation commission is the state entity that has the authority to adjust fares for the ferry system. Washington State Ferries has to raise $328 million to meet a budget requirement set by the state Legislature, which is an increase from the amount set in the current biennium. Washington State Ferries is budgeted to collect $310 million in fares during the current biennium and it is meeting that forecasted amount, said Jean Baker, deputy chief of finance and administration for Washington State Ferries. Approximately 65 percent of the revenue Washington State Ferries receives comes from fares. The proposal includes higher fare increases for vehicle fares than passenger fares. “Passengers are cheaper to carry than cars,” Baker said. “We should be encouraging passenger traffic.” Officials are also considering a fare structure for three-wheeled vehicles, which would pay the motorcycle fare if they are under eight-feet in length; change the youth fare discount from 20 percent to 50 percent; and allow no-show fees in lieu of deposits for reservations. The Washington State Transportation Commission ultimately decides fares for Washington State Ferries. A public comment period will take place during the summer of 2013 and any change in fares will start Oct. 1.

Thousands attend town’s annual Memorial parade By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter

Pearl Harbor survivors, along with other World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans joined active duty personnel and Whidbey Island residents to remember and honor the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect the United States. Coupeville is home of an annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony that took place Saturday. Thousands of people lined the streets of Coupeville and filled Coupeville Town Park to participate in a festive day of events. “I am honored to speak on behalf of the Navy, but it is especially humbling to stand here in uniform and speak about the many American heroes we honor on this special day,” said Capt. Mike Nortier, commanding officer at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. “Memorial Day is a time to pause and take the long view, to take stock of what really matters, to think about what we do and why we do it.”

Nortier spoke during the ceremony honoring fallen service personnel. He took time to mention the Pearl Harbor survivors Jim Stansell, Cecil Calavan, Harold Johnson, Anthony Nady and Harold Shimer who, along with veterans Bill Ethridge, Harry Farrier and Walter Nelson, were on the Town Park stage during the ceremony. Stansell, who is president of the Pearl Harbor Survivor’s Association, conducted a bell ceremony and Hospital Corpsman First Class Charles Winter used a bugle to perform Taps. The All Island Community Band also performed. “The eloquence of words cannot match the power of the sacrifices made by so many. We honor them. We praise them. We remember them,” Nortier said. A light-hearted parade took place before the ceremony. Around 70 entrants comprised this year’s procession that traveled down Main Street, onto Front Street through downtown

before ending up at Town Park. Community groups, the Coupeville High School marching band and church groups were some of the entries in Saturday’s parade. Janice Vaughan was named grand marshal, which is the first year Coupeville’s Memorial Day parade had such an honor. Once the parade wrapped up, people walked to Town Park where they could enjoy a hot dog lunch prepared by members of the Central Whidbey Lions Club. Food was provided by Prairie Center Red Apple.

Project earns Barnes trip to national competition By Nathan Whalen Staff Reporter

Heni Barnes spent months throughout the school year researching a project that earned her some national attention. The Coupeville High School junior performed well enough at regional and state competitions to earn a spot at the National History Day competition that takes place next month in College Park, Md. She produced a 10-minute documentary about the 1917 Pacific Northwest lumber strike that took place mostly in the lumber camps in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Her documentary earned first place honors at the regional competition in March and the state competition in May. Barnes, who is also the student board representative to the school board, started researching her documentary in January. She interviewed college professors and archivists, gleaned information from libraries at Western Washington University, the University of Washington and Sno-Isle Libraries. She said the archivist from Weyerhauser also provided information for Barnes’s project and she also

sented the workers, Barnes said. The strike documentary fits well into her interests. “I’ve always wanted to do a project on something that included IWW,” Barnes said. She described the strike as a “turning point” in history. Residents had a chance to view her documentary at a community showing that took place Wednesday that was open to the public. They could also see the materials she used to produce the documentary and peruse her 42-page bibliography. The National History Day competition is the first part of a busy summer for Barnes. She is participating in an archeology module at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, then she has a two-week summer residency at the University of Washington that is organized by the Washington Aerospace Scholars. Barnes is also the class ASB president, performs in the jazz band and she throws the shot put, discus and javelin on the track team. Once out of high school, she hopes to go to college and eventually become a planetary geologist and astronaut.

Grandmother’s pearls a link to fond memories This week I received a very special gift. While visiting my parents on Memorial Day, my mother gave me a pearl necklace that belonged to her mother. My Oma died in Megan Hansen September at the age of Some perspective 89. She was my last living grandparent. While handling her final affairs, my mother and her sisters found jewelry in a safety deposit box. It probably hadn’t been worn in more than 20 years. While much of it was costume jewelry, there were several genuine pieces the sisters shared. Each of them took pieces that were special to them. While some of the jewelry wasn’t in the best condition, each of them took the pieces to a jeweler to have them repaired or repurposed. My mother took an old diamond ring that wasn’t stable and had the diamonds removed and reset into a new ring. She showed me the ring Monday, happy she was able to salvage something that her mother once cherished. The jewelry may only be a material possession, but I think sometimes they are needed to help link the gap between time and memories. Using something in my everyday life that is linked to my Oma makes me feel closer to her. As I write this column I am reminded of the time I spent with her. I used to spend weekends with her where we would go on adventures. I smile as I think about a time when we went to the Tacoma waterfront and she let me bring home a giant clam I had found. My mother wasn’t too thrilled about it, especially when it died from lack of fresh water and started smelling in the back yard. I’m also reminded of the banana sandwiches she used to make me and the tiny cans of apple juice she always had in her pantry waiting for me. When I spent the night, she’d always put me to bed before the TV show 60 Minutes started. I remember laying in bed, listening to that clicking clock. That intro still brings me back to that bed. Every time I wear the pearls I will be reminded of those times and the things that made my Oma so special to me.

Veteran thankful for town’s appreciation Editor, Saturday my dad, Walter Nelson, participated in the annual Memorial Day Parade for the first time. He was so impressed with the appreciation and countless “thank you Walters” he received from the crowd as his car preceded through the parade. Dad looked at me with a tear in his eye said, “thank you for bringing me, I’ve never felt so appreciated.” My dad, a retired 26 year Navy Senior Chief Radioman, participated in World War II, Korea and Vietnam wars. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal when his torpedo plane, a TBD Devistator, was the final blow in the sinking of the first Japanese aircraft carrier in WWII. The term “Scratch One Flat Top!” was radioed in by LCDR Bob Dixon as the Imperial Navy’s Shoho slipped below the waves. The next day, his own aircraft carrier was sunk causing him to jump overboard an await rescue. My dad wants us all never to forget Memorial Day for the “ultimate sacrifice” of our men and women have given, to defend our country.

Salvia offers variety of culinary treats

I attempted to show someone a very attractive plant recently and as soon as the word Salvia came out of my mouth, she said, “Oh, I know Salvia.” Then with a wave of her hand she moved on, as if to add, “If you’ve seen one Salvia, you’ve seen them all.” I suppose if you had a lot of time on your hands – and I do mean a lot – you could know everything there is to know about Salvia. For the rest of us, I reckon, there’s

always something more to learn. For example, the name Salvia doesn’t just refer to a group of showy ornamental plants, but to a whole genus of approximately 700-900 plants that contains annuals, shrubs and herbaceous perennials. In fact, it’s the largest genus in the Lamiaceae, or mint, family. With that kind of lineage, it’s no surprise Saliva isn’t just a pretty face. A great many are aromatic as well as edible. These salvias are commonly known as sages. One exception should be noted here. Russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) is also a member of the mint family, but it is not a true sage and is not edible. It’s still a long-blooming standout

in the garden and creates interest with its pale stems, even during the bleak winter months. But a Salvia? Never. On the other hand, common garden sage (Salvia officinalis), a native of the Mediterranean region, has been cultivated for thousands of years solely for culinary purposes. The foliage of its many cultivars comes in every shade of green, to purple and golden -- even variegated. You can use both the leaves and the flowers fresh or dried in cooking, or just sit back and enjoy the show when it blooms. If you grow lavender, you already know how to care for your culinary sages. Give them good drainage and full sun, and don’t forget to cut them back hard so they don’t

get leggy and woody. You can do this at the same time you harvest the leaves and flowers in the summer, or after they’re done blooming in the fall. The ornamental salvias cultivated from plants that evolved here in the Americas are like willowy Latin American super models compared to their farm-bred European culinary cousins. I’m thinking of the bright pink flowered Salvia lemmonii (also known as Salvia microphylla var. wislizeni) and the luscious white and red flowered Salvia microphylla ‘Hot Lips,’ But like culinary sages, prune perennial salvias back hard in the fall and you’ll be rewarded with a sturdier and fuller plant in the spring. And don’t forget Salvia

elegans, the sometimes tender tangerine and pineapple sages. Bruise their leaves and the fruity notes immediately transport you to a tropical paradise – even when it’s dreary and dismal outside. There’s yet another Salvia that’s been gaining notoriety lately here in the US. That’s Salvia divinorum, a plant endemic to the cloud forests of Oaxaca in Mexico. It’s been used for generations by indigenous people there to bring about visions and an altered state of consciousness. I used to use something quite different to accomplish the same euphoric feelings. That is until Hostess went out of business.

The current congregation of the Coupeville United Methodist Church celebrated the 160th anniversary of their founding with a special service held April 28 in the historic church on North Main Street. The church at Coupeville was the first church organized north of Olympia in what was then Washington Territory. The pioneer settlers of Central Whidbey held the first service of the Coupeville Methodist Episcopal Church on April 24, 1853. The first pastor appointed to serve the church, Reverend W.B. Morse, spent the next

30 years trekking hundreds of miles on foot, horseback, and by Indian canoe to reach people in the pioneer congregation. The first church “meeting house” was built in 1859. In 1886 a new larger church building was erected close to the location of the current high school. Just seven years later a fire burned the church to the ground, and in 1894 the present church building was constructed on North Main Street. Current pastor Jin Ming Ma, the 59th pastor to serve this historic congregation, led the anniversary celebration

with help from the church’s history committee headed by local historian Roger Sherman, and members of the congregation in pioneer attire.

A complete history of the church’s first 150 years entitled A Great Blessing by historian and author Mary Kline Rose is available for purchase at the church office.

Navy base to donate barrack furniture to Habitat for Humanity

A Coupeville couple known for their involvement in schools and conservation is pulling up stakes and going on a two-year adventure. Dan and Cathy d’Almeida are moving to Vienna, Austria this summer where Dan will complete a two-year assignment as a teacher. Dan has been teaching math and materials science at Coupeville High School since 2008. He is also the girls soccer coach and he organized the Science Olympiad. Cathy has served for five years as community resource conservation manager for the Town of Coupeville. She organized

the community energy challenge, she helped develop a greenhouse gas emission inventory for the county and develop a green power challenge. Dan will continue teaching math, only this time it will be at a small international school that educates 40-50 students. He will also help implement an international baccalaureate program. Their stay in Austria marks their second trip to Europe. They lived in Munich, Germany for several years around the turn of the century. “I just have it in my blood,” d’Almeida said of returning to Europe. He is of Portuguese ancestry and he has family living in Europe.

He said it is a good time to be taking such a trip. Their daughter, Amanda, is graduating from high school and their son, Dawson, just finished his freshman year and he would enjoy the international experience, Dan said. He will be attended a school in Austria with students as far away as Turkey and Estonia. Kathy said they liked Vienna because it’s a large, safe city with the public transportation system good enough where they won’t need a car. “In a way that kind of frees you,” Cathy said adding Vienna is progressive in the area of sustainability. “Europe is light years ahead of us,” Cathy said. She said she hopes to con-

tinue some of her sustainability work when she is living in Vienna. The d’Almeidas hope to return to the Coupeville area when Dan’s assignment wraps up. He said the knowledge he will pick up in Austria will be a help in Coupeville. He said the international school is transitioning from K-8 to K-12 and he is looking forward to implementing the international baccalaureate program. The new program will be project oriented that will be personalized and engaging to the students. Dan helped get the Science Olympiad off the ground and he hasn’t heard yet if someone will serve as an advisor for the young scientists.

Habitat for Humanity is receiving enough furniture to fill hundreds of rooms. WET Industrial, the lead contractor for the barracks complex upgrade at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, is donating almost 250 rooms of furniture to the local affiliate, according to a press release. The furniture donation is one of the largest recycling projects undertaken in Island County. Whidbey Island residents will be able to take advantage of these donations at the Habitat Stores in Oak Harbor and Freeland. Sale proceeds will allow Habitat to serve more local low-income families in need of simple, decent, and affordable housing. A showroom model of the furniture has been created at the Oak Harbor Store. VET Industrial and their partners, Blue Mountain Electric, JRT Mechanical, and P&L General Contractors, will have a moving-party kick-off at 8:30 a.m., June 1 on the base. Following the opening ceremonies, volunteers and staff from the three companies will load multiple trucks with captain’s beds, mattresses, desks and chairs, armoires, dining tables, night stands, end tables, upholstered chairs, and refrigerator/microwave units. Senior Madison TisaMcPhee ended her stellar Coupeville High School track career with third- and fifthplace finishes at the state 1A meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Tisa-McPhee captured third in the 100 hurdles in 16.75. Newport’s Arielle Walden won in 16.16. Tisa-McPhee placed eighth in the event at state as a sophomore in 2011. She also teamed up with

Coupeville’s other entry in the meet, the 4x100 team of sophomore Marisa Etzell, Hoskins, Hurlburt and Stone placed 11th in 52.09 in the preliminaries and failed to reach the finals. Connell won again, clocking 50.63. As a team, the Coupeville girls scored 10 points, good for 26th. Cedar Park Christian of Bothell won with 67. No Coupeville boys qualified for the meet.
