Holmes Harbor pollution eases By JIM LARSEN Record editor The tainted waters at the south end of Holmes Harbor have improved dramatically, leading to the possibility they will be declared safe for swimming, wading and shellfish harvesting later this year.

In a moment of levity, Mike McClung, commander of the Major Megan McClung Marine Corps League of Whidbey Island, hands the microphone to Anastasia Leese, 6, who looks a bit skeptical. In back from the left are the main speaker Marine Col. Brad Close, Chaplain Darrell Wenzek, and Senior Poppy Girl Krista Drechsel. Anastasia went to deliver a fine speech on why she’s proud to be the 2013 Poppy Girl.

Island turns out to honor fallen veterans By JIM LARSEN Record editor One of the largest crowds in years swarmed to pay homage to America’s fallen war heroes with a ceremony at Bayview Cemetery on Memorial Day. Cars lined the fence outside the cemetery and people kept coming as the 11 a.m. starting time neared. Maple Glen retirement center in Freeland sent a van load of folks, including Tudy Miller who was lowered to the ground on a lift. By the time of the opening prayer, at least 200 people were present, from the sponsoring American Legion Post 141 and its Legion Riders and Auxiliary, to the Col. Megan McClung Marine Corps League of Whidbey Island, to veterans of the military services and their families, to those who had lost relatives in war, and to regular members of the public who wanted to pay their

respects. “My grandfather was a POW in World War II,” said Amber Ek, explaining her presence as she held her young son Burl who was waving an American flag. Mike McClung, commander of the Marine Corps League that bears his daughter’s name (she was killed in Iraq in 2006), presided, telling the crowd this is the sixth year he’s been involved, and the sixth year it’s rained. He listed friends killed in several wars, the loss of his daughter to an explosive device, and urged those attending to “look among the graves; unless we remember those who have fallen we will be ill-served in the future.” Dozens of the graves had flags flying from them, showing how many South Whidbey residents served their country. Legion Poppy Girl Anastasia Leese, 6, proudly read a statement, SEE VETERANS, A6

Herb Weissblum of Clinton begins to recite a patriotic poem he wrote especially for Monday’s Memorial Day ceremony at Bayview Cemetery.

“We have to make sure the marine waters are clean. You guys have a lot of stuff that washes up on that beach.” Julie Schultz, Washington Dept. of Health

Warning signs posted at Freeland County Park have long declared “the current conditions at this beach are not suitable for recreational water activities. Small children and people chronically ill people are at higher risk for increased illness.” One sign flatly states “no swimming” and “no wading,” and another bans clamming entirely. Monday was one of the lowest tides of the year, at minus 3.4 feet, and the acres of clam grounds were devoid of clam diggers, no doubt making for happy clams. It was high fecal coliform test results that forced the beach closure. In 2006, a shellfish protection district was created by the state Department of Health, working with the Island County Health Department and area residents. A concerted effort began to clean up the waters SEE POLLUTION, A6

True or false? Once you have chosen an agent to represent you in the sale of your home, and have signed a listing, you should get out of the way and let the agent find a buyer. False. Selling a home requires involvement by owners as well as the agent. Sellers are responsible for two areas: 1.) pricing the home fairly with attractive terms, and 2.) providing a home in marketable condition. The agent is responsible for preparing and implementing a marketing plan to attract suitable buyers. Fair pricing is critical because most buyers comparison shop, eliminating homes priced above market value. The agent can provide details of recent sales in the local market, as well as pricing of similar homes currently for sale. This can be used to arrive at a price that reflects the value offered by the home. Offering a home in marketable condition is critical to a successful sale. Buyers expect to purchase a home in excellent condition. By performing a walk-through inspection, the agent can provide sellers with a list of needed improvements. It is up to to sellers to present a positive first impression. The agent crates an imaginative marketing plan that targets buyers groups most likely to purchase the home. Advertising and promotion attracts their attention. The home is thus positioned to appeal to the widest possible segment of purchasers.

Some 50 waterfront home sit on small lots separated by the high bluff only by the narrow paved road. By JIM LARSEN Record editor The long winter and spring of landslides on Whidbey Island resumed on a rainy Monday evening when a hunk of bluff fell across East Point Road in the Whidbey Shores community on Fox Spit, about five miles north of Langley. The slide was nothing new to Dale Strickland, of South Whidbey’s Dirt Movers, who has moved dirt off the same private road in prior years. He got the call Monday afternoon while enjoying a holiday dinner at his daughter’s house on the mainland. Strickland arrived at the scene that evening to see a TV crew from KOMO filming the small slide and interviewing a neighbor. He went to work with his excavator and dump truck about 8:30 p.m. and had the narrow road cleared by 2:30 a.m., he said. But there was still work to do Tuesday, so he arrived early to move more dirt. Later, he planned to bring in rock to stabilize the base.

Jim Larsen / The Record

Dale Strickland, left, spent late Monday night and early Tuesday clearing East Point Drive of debris from a landslide. By Tuesday morning he was discussing how to stabilize the bluff with longtime area resident Dan Deirs. “I’ll put in rock and pound it in, that’ll tighten it up,” he said. But there was still a big bald spot on the bluff where trees had fallen and a threatening overhang of dirt. The area affected was

only 50 to 60-feet wide, but the slide damaged a control box for a water system designed to keep the road dry. Also watching the scene was Dan Deirs, who lives in a safer area near the point, and whose father was

TV,” Deirs said. But they understood the interest was related to the huge landslide at Ledgewood Beach earlier this year that took out several homes, made an area inaccessible and created national headlines. Strickland said he’s had plenty of work this year running from one slide area to another, from Clinton to Anacortes. Deirs expects there will be more work for Strickland in the future. Looking up at the threatening overhang above East Point Road, he said, “Still, this is not safe.”

Editorial Better smoke detector needed South Whidbey Fire/EMS has a good program, using federal money to hand out smoke detectors the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. During that hour next Tuesday, June 4, stop by your station in Clinton, Bayview, Langley, Maxwelton or Saratoga and pick one up. Having a working smoke detector cuts the risk of a fatality in a house fire by 50 percent, experts say. Looking at a modern house, it’s hard to believe it could be totaled by fire. All the drywall doesn’t look very flammable, and firefighters are only minutes away. But a house fire in Langley last month reminded us that anything can burn if the fire is given time before it’s noticed. While we fully support smoke detectors, modern science to our knowledge has never solved some of the frustrating problems we have with them. They’re usually wired into the house, perhaps in a hallway ceiling, but still require batteries. Five years fly by and it’s hard to remember to change batteries, despite biannual warnings when daylight savings time kicks in and out. When changing batteries, it can be a struggle opening the battery trap door while trying not to yank the whole fire detector out of the drywall. It’s not unusual to see a dangling fire detector in homes, suggesting the owner had a little problem replacing the batteries. The other problem is that smoke detectors can’t tell the difference between a real fire and someone cooking bacon in the kitchen. It goes off anyway, and there’s no good way to turn off the annoying, high-pitched warning alarm. Yes, there’s a button to press but it seldom seems to work. People sometimes disconnect their smoke detectors because of the frustration. What the world needs is a better smoke detector. One with an easy on/off switch, and one that is easy to reach, not wired to the ceiling. When turned off, the detector would come back on automatically, after the bacon fumes are gone. Instead of being wired to the house, it could be stuck high on a wall. Modern batteries last for years. Is the power backup really necessary? Build a better smoke detector and the world will beat a path to your door.

Foster parents helped here To the editor: It seems perfectly fitting that May is selected as National Foster Care Month for it occurs during the season that bears witness to the promise and beauty of life renewed. National Foster Care Month gives each of us time to remember that children are our most precious resource. It gives each of us reason to show that we are grateful to local foster and relative parents who are providing stable and loving home environments for the children entrusted to their care. Communities across the nation are stepping up to show their appreciation to the individuals and families who are choosing to respond to this higher calling. The same is true in Island County. Kudos to the volunteers at the M-Bar-C Ranch for the warmth and for the homestyle hospitality that you shared as you welcomed local foster and relative families to the ranch for the May 4 appreciation event. Kudos as well to the good folks at Jet Java, JW Desserts, the Tree

Gas tax hike unacceptable To the editor: Regarding proposed gas tax increase: I live in a rural community. I don’t make a lot of money. I drive more than the folks in town — for work and to live. A 10 cent a gallon tax is a huge hit for people like me.

flowing into the south end of Holmes Harbor. With help from the Whidbey Island Conservation District, the cleanup took years. They made sure small hobby farms weren’t contributing to the problem. The county publicized the need for dog walkers to pick up after their pets, making waste bags available at the park. And homeowners around Holmes Harbor were particularly encouraged to comply with the county’s new septic ordinance, requiring inspections every three years for most septic tank owners, but every year for those living near the water. Inspection rates are far higher than the county average. “The water quality in the drainage has significantly improved,” said Jule Schultz, restoration lead for the project with the state. “They did a great job.” “The concerns we have now are summer time use,” he added. “We have to make sure the marine waters are clean. You guys have a lot of stuff that washes up on that beach.” There was a red tide Monday, but usually those are not considered dangerous. The county will continue testing the waters this summer with hopes of opening the area to banned recreational uses as early as this fall. “We are very optimistic there will be an upgrade later this year to some form of opening,” said Jill Wood, Island County’s environmental health director, last week. Wood noted that the state ordered the closure and will decide when to open the

waters to swimming and wading. “We’ve been actively working in the watershed since 2007,” Wood added, also mentioning the septic, farming and pet dropping programs. Homeowners are also urged to use proper lawn care and car care to avoid pollution runoff problems. “We’ve taken a proactive role in the watershed,” she said. A newsletter from Island County Public Health will soon be sent to residents of the shellfish protection district informing them of the good news of the latest test results. From 2010 to 2012, fecal coliform has dropped 70 percent at the Freeland Park storm water outfall, 64 percent at the Freeland Creek beach outfall, 60 percent at the Woodard Avenue beach outfall, and 82 percent at the storm water outfall on Shoreview Drive. The only increase was a 15 percent jump at the wetland outfall at Shoreview Drive. Schultz said the state Department of Fish and Wildlife controls clam digging. “They manage that resource,” he said. “But I think it will be opened for at least part of the year.” Schultz, in the newsletter, tells residents that “the significant pollution control work that has been completed in the uplands by the local shellfish protection district and the county warrants an evaluation of the shellfish growing area.” Once the current summer water testing is complete, Schultz stated, “We are optimistic the area will be upgraded.” By fall, perhaps, the Holmes Harbor clams won’t be quite so happy.

Berger wins 1A discus title, boosts girls to 10th By BEN WATANABE Staff reporter Angelina Berger absolutely wrecked the South Whidbey High School discus record. It’s impressive because she beat her own mark, and the Falcon senior did it at the state 1A track and field meet. With Berger’s firstplace finish, the South Whidbey girls team placed 10th at the meet in Yakima. “All the girls competed in the very last available events of the entire season at the state meet and stepped off the track and out of the ring for the last time as the most successful Falcon athletes of the

year,” said Falcon head coach Mark Eager. Competing in her final high school track meet as a Falcon, Berger slung the discus 128 feet, 5 inches. Her state-title throw was eight feet, six inches farther than her previous best toss. Berger beat the second-place finisher, Chelan’s Karle Pittsinger, by almost two feet. She also placed third in the shot put by throwing 38 feet, 8 inches. Pittsinger won the shot put with a mark of 42 feet, 0.50 inches and Lynden Christian sophomore Morgan Van Kooten, placed second. Another Falcon placed well in the discus, Kristen Schuster. The sophomore capped the season with

her best throw at 106 feet, 8 inches and finished as one of the top eight discus throwers in 1A. The surprise of the meet was freshman Tera Applegate. She placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.89 seconds. It was a bit of a rally as she ran a 17-second race in the prelims, one of her slowest times in almost a month. Two of South Whidbey’s three relay teams at the state meet competed in the finals. The 1,600-meter and the 800-meter relays placed eighth. Each squad, perhaps a bit exhausted from the prelim race, ran slower in the final heat. The 1,600meter relay team of seniors Sylvia Kaul-Anderson, Nora Felt, Anna

Hood and junior Madi Boyd finished the race in 4:15.77, the fastest time of the year for South Whidbey. Boyd and Hood also raced with the 800-meter relay along with Applegate and junior Maia Sparkman. They finished the twolap course in 1:49.15, just a second slow of their season-best time set in the prelims. Only the girls 400-meter relay missed qualifying for the final heat by .19 seconds in the prelims. Lillianna Stelling, a senior, capped her career with an eighth-place finish in the 3,200. She finished the eight-lap course in 11:37.41, a bit SEE TRACK, A8

Fallon wins baseball conference coach of the year award in first season By BEN WATANABE Staff reporter Teamwork is often the first and last word out of Tom Fallon’s mouth when it comes to South Whidbey baseball. That’s why when he won the Cascade Conference coach of the year award, he praised his assistants and the players. “It’s a huge honor,” Fallon said of his coaching peers voting him coach of the year. “It’s kind of hard for me because I’m a humble guy. I don’t like attention on myself. “The whole team-first thing continues … I look at it as the team’s award.” Wins ballooned with Fallon as the Falcons’ head coach. The past two seasons, each under a different head coach, South Whidbey combined for five wins and 32 losses. With Fallon and assistant coaches Bill Patterson and Dave Moody, the Falcons soared to a 9-15 overall record, 7-11 in league play. Getting the team to compete in a league stacked with powerhouse teams like Archbishop Murphy and Cedarcrest was a challenge. But because South Whidbey was a 1A school, and the top teams were

Tom Fallon coaches his son, Trent, on the finer points of laying down a bunt during preseason practice in March. South Whidbey’s first-year head skipper was voted coach of the year by the Cascade Conference baseball coaches. 2A, the Falcons advanced to the playoffs despite finishing as the conference’s fifth-

place team. “One of the first things he told us in

our (preseason) meeting was he wanted to change the way people looked at South Whidbey baseball,” said Falcon senior captain Aaron Curfman. “It shaped everything around the Falcon baseball culture.” Playing in the postseason for the first time in more than four years, South Whidbey lost its first game in a rout. Facing elimination, the Falcons fought off Blaine and Lynden Christian to make the tri-district tournament. In the first-round elimination game, South Whidbey lost to Charles Wright Academy in an extrainning bout. Overall, South Whidbey’s offense was a little lackluster. The Falcons averaged 4.3 runs per game and allowed 4.7. Against league opponents, South Whidbey fared better with a 5.1 average for and 4.4 runs allowed. Fallon and the coaching staff pulled a major turnaround defensively, as the Falcons allowed 7.9 runs overall and 7.7 to Cascade Conference teams. And while coaching played its part last year, Fallon is quickly credits the team’s unity. “Team chemistry, that’s one of those intangibles that you either have it or you don’t and we had it and everything clicked this year,” he said.

While the distance was well short of his 1A second-ranked mark of 182 feet, 6 inches, the junior finished in the top half of the state field peppered with throws between 140 and 180 feet. Cedar Park Christian’s girls won the team title with 67 points. South Whidbey placed 10th with 23 points, four points behind Cashmere and four points ahead of Zillah. The Falcon boys team tied for 44th out of 44 teams.

By BEN WATANABE Staff reporter Diane Mattens refuses to let her sometimes-moody renter affect her life negatively. The renter isn’t some wild young adult or cranky senior. Mattens lives with multiple sclerosis (MS), and the Freeland woman calls the degenerative disease her body’s tenant. “I think of MS as a renter in my house,” Mattens said. “MS rents space from me, and we have an agreement. And that is if I eat right and get enough sleep and keep my stress at a minimum and get enough exercise, then MS stays in a quiet part of the house. So far, it’s kind of worked for me.” The hyperimmune disease spurred Mattens to bike 4,295 miles from Bar Harbor, Maine to Seattle. Cycling across 13 states will take almost 70 days from May 28 to Aug. 4, and Mattens is now on Day Two of her trek to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis. Biking from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest has several meanings and motivating factors for Mattens. Having lived with MS since 1985, she learned to functionally live with it by exercising and eating the right foods. Also, her dad died in 1985 at the age of 55 while biking on a ride for

It takes a village to feed hungry kids By Betty Freeman Contributing writer Whidbey Island Nourishes (WIN), a 7-year-old South Whidbey nonprofit organization that provides nutritious free food to hungry children and adults, has opened a new coinless food vending machine behind Clinton Community Hall. WIN has had a coinless vending machine conveniently located behind the South Whidbey Commons on Second Street in Langley, and has long had a plan to add another machine in Clinton. The vending machines are used primarily by teens and families who need food support. Offered at both vending machines are ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, fruit, veggies, trail mix, string cheese, milk, yogurt and granola. At times, salads and bean, rice and cheese wraps are also available. WIN offered complete lunches at the Clinton Good Cheer Store when it was near the Food Mart, but the clientele didn’t make the move along with Good Cheer when it relocated to Ken’s Korner last fall. “We know there are people in Clinton who need this food, but may not be able to get to Ken’s Korner for the lunches,” said WIN founder Mary Fisher. “So when Clinton Progressive Association offered us a site and Rotary gave us a grant, we plunged into the project of placing a vending machine in Clinton.” Thanks to the generous grant from South Whidbey Rotary, cooperation from the Clinton Progressive Association, donations of materials from local businesses and a dedicated crew of volunteers, the new building housing the vending machine opened May 23. “WIN’s goals fit in with Rotary’s main mission, which is to feed the world,” said South Whidbey Rotary President Don Rowan. “Their project fit the bill for a grant from Rotary International.” Rowan acknowledged that while Rotary supplied the money, WIN is the driver of the project. Karen Franklin of Rotary wrote the grant application and the Clinton Progressive Association (CPA) made room for the new building behind the Community Hall on Central Avenue. “We’re happy to collaborate with such a great organization as WIN,” said Carol Flax, CPA president. “They deserve our support.” Once the site was assured, WIN board member Dorit Zingarelli designed the building and coordinated the project, with help from local builder Dave Johnson and the Builders’ Association. Johnson helped procure donations from ProBuild, Whidbey Door Systems, Pacific Windows and Doors, Milgard Windows, Bartlett Electric and Sebo’s Hardware, enabling volunteers to build the structure at low cost. Construction volunteers led by Johnson included Don

Karen Franklin, Mary Fisher, Dorit Zingarelli, Ray Green and Don Rowan stand in front of Whidbey Island Nourishes’ new free food-vending site at the Clinton Community Hall. The project was a joint venture of WIN and Rotary of South Whidbey, with significant contributions from local businesses and community volunteers. Cornett, Trevor Jones, Tom Norton, Jim Thelen and Tim Thomson. Rotary volunteer Ray Green installed trim and did the painting, fixed the vending machine door so it will open smoothly and built shelving for condiments and supplies. “I’m happy to help out,” said Green. “It’s a neat project.” Seven years ago, Mary Fisher learned that there were 60 known homeless teens on South Whidbey. She told her friends, and they told their friends, and WIN got started providing healthy food to hungry kids outside of normal school hours. Fisher and her friends contacted the schools because they wondered what children who got free or reduced price lunches had to eat on weekends. Academy, the HUB in Langley, and in the coinless vending machine at South Whidbey Commons and now at the new site in Clinton. “We need to get the word out about the new Clinton site,” said Fisher. “We also need to let people know to access the machine from the left side of the building as you’re facing it, and not to cut across private property to get there.” The little outbuilding cannot be seen when facing the community hall, but if visitors walk around to the back of the hall on the totem pole side and turn right, the little building with diamond shaped windows and a yellow door is clearly visible. Summer hours for the Clinton site will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. “We’ve been told by some teens that what they get from our vending machines is the only food they have,” said Fisher. “They appreciate the nutritious choices we’re offering them. We’ve even gotten thank you notes for fruit and fresh veggies.” WIN food is prepared by volunteers who work three days a week in the kitchen of the former South Whidbey Primary School. WIN’s funding comes primarily from local donors, both individuals and businesses, and is supplemented by grants. For more information, to donate, or to volunteer, go to whidbeyislandnourishes.org.

Sydney Ackerman to serve as schools’ student voice By BEN WATANABE Staff reporter

Sydney Ackerman has a tiny voice for someone so tall. Next school year, her voice will carry lots of weight as the South Whidbey School District’s student representative. The current junior at South Whidbey High School received four-of-five school board member votes at their business meeting May 22. Only Jill Engstrom voted for someone else, junior Gavin Imes. “I want to accomplish a more efficient relationship between the schools and the student board, so information, especially from students, can be understood,” Ackerman said. Adding a non-voting student seat to the five-member school board came about earlier this school year. A trip to the Washington State School Directors Association conference gave the South Whidbey school board the idea to add a student voice to their ranks. They heard from other districts that had two student seats, but as a first-year program, South Whidbey school leaders were wary of seeking two students and getting none. “We were wondering if we would have an applicant, and we had seven,” said Superintendent Jo Moccia. Three to-be seniors and four to-be juniors applied for the position. From the class of

2014 were Lisa Walker, Imes and Ackerman. From the class of 2015 were Will Holbert, Ariana Abrahams, Cole Zink and Joseph Neil. Students had to be in and maintain “good” academic standing to be considered for the position in the first place. “I’m very impressed with all seven of you. It says a lot about you and our schools,” said board Chairman Steve Scoles. The major factor was the individual interviews conducted over a 90-minute period Wednesday afternoon. These 15, 16 and 17 year olds are not always well versed in the art of an interview. With many more to come, the board encouraged all of the applicants to seek input from Moccia about their interview. “One of the things we (directors) all agreed on is it’s a wonderful teaching moment,” said board member Fred O’Neal. “Some of you were better interviewing than others.” Serving as the student representative is a one-year term that spans a school year from July to June. The student is expected to attend all board workshops and board meetings, obey the rules and regulations pertaining to board members, including quorum rules, receive and review all meeting agendas, minutes and other relevant information and act as a liaison to the students in all South Whidbey schools through the ASB.

Ackerman, as the future executive treasurer for the high school ASB, said she wants to bring student life to the board’s attention. Serving as the student voice on the board is, in her words, a way to give back. “The schools are so awesome for students, it’s the least I can do,” Ackerman said. “I feel that I owe it to the schools to give back and this is a cool way.” Ackerman supported the idea to add a second student seat to the board.
