Dingle wants to get bond issue finished Adair Dingle to run for third term for Mercer Island School Board By Mary L. Grady
editor@mi-reporter.com
After a bruising defeat of the bond measure designed to bring Mercer Island schools into a place for 21st century learning, School Board member Adair Dingle said she is determined to stay on the board to ensure that the next such measure — greatly revised and reduced in scope from the original measure — will pass. Dingle said that she is dismayed that the initial $196 million proposal lost by such a large margin. She is concerned that the need for

It was 9:30 a.m. on May 14, a mild spring morning. Both Dick Moller and his neighbor, Jack Cusack, were home. Suddenly, there was the sound of brakes and a loud boom. “It was so loud,” said Cusack, with emphasis. “I looked out, then went to find my camera.” Moller also heard the boom and went up to see a dump truck with an attached trailer turned on its side. He saw a huge gash made by the vehicle in the slope at the side of the road.

Solicitor activity rises, police offer safety tips By Kelly Leonard
Asst. City Attorney, City of Mercer Island
The Mercer Island Police Department has experienced a recent increase in calls regarding solicitors going door-to-door to residences on Mercer Island, especially commercial salespeople selling products and services. This is a good opportunity to brush up on some tips for interacting with salespeople that arrive on your doorstep. What do you do to avoid door-to-door salespeople? To avoid solicitors, post a “no solicitors” or “no trespassing” sign in a conspicuous location on your home or property. On Mercer Island, it is a crime for someone to knowingly enter or remain on property when they have been given notice against trespass by a posting that is reasonably likely to come to their attention. Remember, you are not obligated to answer the door if uninvited persons remain on your property; call 911. What do you do when a salesperson knocks on your door? Before opening the door, look out a window to see who is there. If you do not feel comfortable opening the door, then do not open it. Ask the salesperson their name, company, and the product or service they are selling. If you request that they leave, they must do so immediately. If the salesperson asks to use the bathroom, the phone, or get a drink of water, refuse their request and ask the individual to leave. If the person refuses to leave or if you feel intimidated, pressured or threatened at any time, call 911. If you choose to purchase an item from a salesperson, you are encouraged to avoid paying immediately. Instead, find out from the salesperson how you can order directly from the company or receive the bill upon receipt of the product or service. However, if you do make a purchase directly from the salesperson, a Federal Trade Commission Regulation gives you the right to a three-business-day “cooling off period” when the sale price is more than $25. Stay informed. In 2012, the Washington attorney

Scary trucks T
he huge five-axle truck hauling gravel down East Mercer Way last week could not negotiate a curve in the 4700 block of the snake-like byway after its driver swerved to avoid an oncoming car. The truck carved a wide gash into the slope next to the roadway, and the trailer it was pulling overturned with a boom heard blocks away. It then skidded along the pavement, spilling gravel everywhere. Miraculously, the truck did not roll down an embankment and land on a house. No one was hurt. Large trucks that deliver goods to our grocery stores, haul crops to ships and pull machinery are necessary to our 21st century life. But the increased size of these vehicles represents some serious risk. Not only on the freeway but in our Town Center, or along Island Crest Way, we can find ourselves often cheek by jowl with these giant machines with loads that can weigh several tons. To be fair, transportation companies use larger vehicles to take advantage of the economies of scale gained from pulling larger loads. Larger trucks also help mitigate higher fuel and labor costs and help keep the cost of goods for consumers low. But of course, there are disadvantages. There is no doubt that these ‘super-sized’ vehicles are not very maneuverable. Large trucks that deliver to Island stores block streets and parking lots when they unload. They often break curbs, lightposts and trees as they maneuver into narrow lanes or make wide turns. And it is not just businesses that need large trucks to make deliveries. Construction jobs, such as the work by the city to repair and build larger shoulders along East Mercer Way, need trucks to deliver paving materials and haul away debris. Loads of lumber, or even steel, needed for new homes are delivered by larger and longer trucks. Should there be more regulation? Yes. Should the city say that large trucks at least along East and West Mercer Ways be limited in length or weight? Yes. Should such vehicles have an escort to warn oncoming traffic? Yes. More rules are always a hassle and end up costing time and money. But in the long run, such steps may save lives.
‘These supersized vehicles are obviously not very maneuverable.’

It’s a dog’s life, city does not have leash law Reading about the Councilman and his dog reminded me of an incident last summer. I was walking past the children’s playground in Mercerdale Park and a large, unleashed dog jumped on me from behind. He was simply playing, but I hadn’t seen him coming and was nearly knocked down. The owner was unapologetic, explaining that there is no leash law on Mercer Island. I later called the Mercer Island police, asking for clarification and whether dogs should be leashed or at least under an owner’s control, particularly next to playgrounds. The officer was engaging and polite, but clearly uncomfortable, and told me, “We’ve been instructed that the political climate has changed.” I was surprised at the answer and asked again, and he repeated without explanation that the political climate had changed. Bob Walton
Bob has been recalled and will certainly miss his family and many friends. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, he is from one of America’s most historic families. A direct descendent of Pelig Nichols, a pilgrim who arrived on the Mayflower from England (really), Isaac Walton (fisherman/philosopher), George Walton (Senator, Governor, member of the Continental Congress and youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence), Ezra Day (President of Cornell University) and Florence Walton (a world renowned ballerina who was married to Jack Dempsey). Bob’s mother was from one of the five founding families of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. She was the Chief Administrator for the Governor of Delaware at the time of her passing when Bob was 18 months old. Bob was raised by his maternal grandparents until the age of eight. Age the at of 17, Bob went to sea to satisfy his curiosity about how the rest of the world lived, while working his way up from Mess Boy to Engineering Officer. Between traveling the world and reading an entire set of encyclopedias, he essentially became self educated. He did, later on, attend lecture discussion classes at the University of Washington, mostly about history from Melvin Rader and Geovanni Costigan. Bob met and married Carol Wakefield from Seattle who taught school on Mercer Island for thirty years. They had two great children – Eric (a world famous jazz musician), and Trisha (one of the best women Bob had ever known). Eric (aka “Skerik”) lives in Seattle and has a daughter, Ko Ko. Trisha lives in Bellingham and has two children – Beck & Maren. Bob and Carol moved to Mercer Island, where she taught, in 1960. Bob volunteered for many causes on the Island and was lastly involved with the Friends of the Library and M.I. Historical Society. He coached Eric & Trisha in soccer, basketball and baseball. He also played men’s slow pitch for twenty years. Bob founded Maritime Recruiters in 1970, recruited world wide and loved what he did. He never retired. He had a lifetime love of the sea and ships. He was a member of The Propeller Club, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and The Society of Port Engineers. He designed his logo that he said was the first company in the US to use blue and green together. His logo is registered nationally and is recognized the world over by maritime companies. Bob was an avid reader, loved to hike and bike, was a season ticker holder to the Seattle Symphony and Village Theatre. He loved classical and jazz and often wished he was a better dancer like his semi-professional father and sister. He enjoyed giving olive oil and books to his many friends. One was good for your body and the other good for your mind. Though divorced, Bob and Carol remained friends and exchanged books. A chance encounter at the Mercer Island post office with June Milliard, a local dental hygienist, sparked an eleven-year relationship and current engagement. As a remembrance, Bob would suggest giving a book to a friend (Island Books, of course). He will miss you all and hopes you will remember him as a good guy. 790896

Elizabeth“Betsy” Merrow Withington
Elizabeth “Betsy” Merrow Withington passed on April 17th, soon after reaching her 96th birthday. She and her twin sister Susan were born in Boston, MA who along with their younger sister Sally spent many happy summers at their second home in Boothbay, ME. Betsy graduated from Boston University and taught high school physics for one year before her marriage to HW “Bob” Withington a young MIT aeronautical engineer. Their long and adventurous life together began with a honeymoon driving cross-country to Seattle, July 1941. In the mid 1940’s Bob and Betsy moved to Mercer Island, which they called home for the rest of their lives - over 6 decades. Whatever Betsy did she did well and with style, and with the firm belief “any job worth doing is worth doing well”. Her desire was to make a difference and she truly did, touching so many lives with fairness and honesty. Betsy had a passion for excellence, an insatiable curiosity and was always up for the next adventure whether it be traveling the world with Bob and family or exploring the backyard with a grandchild. The Mercer Island Historical Society is completing a new version of its history book, “Mercer Island History, from Haunted Wilderness to Coveted Community,” first published in 1977 and revised in 1989. An editorial committee, led by former Mercer Island Reporter editor Jane Meyer Brahm, has been working on the all-new book, filled with hundreds of new photos, maps and illustrations, many of them in color. The book will be a unique chronicle of our island community from its beginnings to present day. It will be available exclusively at Island Books in time for holiday giving. To help pay for the production of the book, the Mercer Island Historical Society is seeking donations. Island residents past and present,
businesses, community organizations or anyone else who would like to support the new book are invited to join in as sponsors. Donations are tax-deductible and any amount is welcome. All $50-or-more donors will be listed in the book as sponsors. Donors of $500 or more will also receive a complimentary copy of the book. If you wish to be listed as a sponsor, your donation must be received by June 10. Proceeds from the book sales will benefit the Mercer Island Historical Society for archiving historical data and personal memoirs and enhancing its website. Send your donation to the Mercer Island Historical Society, PO Box 111, Mercer Island, 98040. Include your name as you would like it to appear in the book.

The politician and businessman loved horses. Hoppe, a Thoroughbred racehorse owner for more than 50 years, amassed an illustrious racing career that included several stakes winners such as all-time favorite Red Eye Express, an eight-time stakes winner and runnerup in the 1974 Longacres Mile and considered one of Longacres’ greatest sprinters. Along with Red Eye Express, Hoppe and trainer Howard Belvoir joined forces on numerous racehorses in a partnership that dated back to 1964. At Emerald Downs, Hoppe and Belvoir teamed with Mulcahy, voted ‘Top 3-Year-Old Male’ of 2007. Two years ago, Hoppe held an 80th birthday party for himself at Emerald Downs. He invited hundreds of friends from all walks of his life,

Former King County assessor and champion of property owners and taxpayers, Harley H. Hoppe died in his sleep on Monday morning, May 13, at his home on Mercer Island. Hoppe owned Harley H. Hoppe & Associates, a property tax service on Mercer Island, for nearly 30 years. Prior to opening his business, Hoppe spent a dozen years as King County assessor, when he administered property tax laws and assessment procedures. He brought that experience to his successful property tax appeal business on 77th Avenue S.E. that counted dozens of Islanders as clients. Hoppe also ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1974, but carried all of the smaller counties in Washington state.

It’s at this first visit when the dentist will discuss early steps to ensure healthy teeth, and identify little problems before they become big problems. Your pediatric dentist will answer your questions about teething, the prevention of baby tooth decay, the benefits of flouride and the need to begin brushing.

T
wenty years ago, gas was at $1.00 a gallon, a movie titled “Sleepless in Seattle” just premiered and a young mother named CJ Taylor-Day brought together a small group of friends and volunteers to establish the Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Losing her mother to breast cancer at age 17, CJ was passionately committed to ensuring “no child should ever grow up without a mother because of breast cancer.” Since that beginning, Komen Puget Sound has grown to rank fifth out of 120 Komen affiliates nationally. As a result of this growth, the affiliate has been able to invest over $7 million into
medical research to better diagnose, treat and ultimately cure breast cancer. But the majority of the affiliate’s grants, over $19 million, have been invested right here in our community to fund breast health education, screening and treatment support. Komen Puget Sound continues to be the largest private provider of free mammogram support to low income and uninsured women. The Komen Patient Assistance Fund has provided thousands of breast cancer patients in our community with financial support for life’s basic needs, allowing them to continue their lifesaving treatments. Women like Kate B. from
Renton, Washington said: “I have been incredibly anxious because my treatments for breast cancer have meant missing work. I was SO thankful for the money I received from the patient assistance fund because it allowed us to catch up with my mortgage payments. Without the Komen fund, we would have faced the stress of possible foreclosure. I want to say thank you very much for your help.” The fight against breast cancer has come a long way in the last 20 years. Komen Puget Sound will continue this fight until Komen’s promise of a world without breast cancer becomes a reality.

But boy, was I wrong!” More than 3,000 women showed up in pouring rain for the first Race, more women that ever ran in a Seattle Race before. “Seeing all those people united together around breast cancer, this huge sea of pink, was so powerful! It made me cry,” says Tath. Jan was not only at the first Race for the Cure, but she also was responsible for organizing the whole race, as the Race Chair. “I attended my
first Komen Puget Sound meeting, and they asked who would like to chair the first Race for the Cure. I just raised my hand,” says Jan. “I was a runner back then, and I was really drawn to the idea of a race to benefit an important cause like breast cancer.”

People are smiling and walking around with in Seattle,” says Tath. “We were one large support group for each other. During the lunch, filled goodie bags. It is just a great day of fun! Islanders donate blood for life By Reporter Staff
The blood drive held last month at Mercer Island High School yielded 47 units of blood, making 146 units the total amount donated at the high school in 2012-2013. During the previous school year, 2011-2012, 150 units were collected. 219 units were received in 20102011, and 149 in 2009-2010. In addition to the high school, the Puget Sound Blood Center also holds blood drives at the Mercer Island Covenant Church and the Stroum Jewish Community Center. According to David A. Larsen, the director of communications for PSBC, the agency holds between a dozen and 14 drives each year on the Island, for an average of 460 units per year. The Puget Sound Blood Center has a list of facts that illustrate the importance of blood donations in the United States. First and foremost, blood cannot be manufactured. It can only come from donors. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. More than 44,000 blood donations are needed every day.
The blood used in an emergency must already be on shelves before the event occurs. The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O. Sickle cell disease affects more than 80,000 people in the U.S., 98 percent of whom are African American. Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives. More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. The number of blood donations collected in the U.S. in a year: 16 million (2006). The number of blood donors in the U.S. in a year: 9.5 million (2006). The number of patients who receive blood in the U.S. in a year: 5 million (2006). Share of the U.S. population eligible to give blood: Less than 38 percent. Type O-negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood
types. It is always in great demand and often in short supply. Type AB-positive plasma can be transfused to patients of all other blood types. AB plasma is also usually in short supply. For information on how, when and where to donate blood, go to www.psbc.org.

Mercer Island fastpitch wins first district game in program history By Megan Managan
mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
The Mercer Island fastpitch team recorded its first SeaKing district tournament win, possibly ever, last week. The Islanders, which earned the No. 4 seed out of the KingCo tournament, began districts on Wednesday at the Lower Woodland Park in Seattle against Chief Sealth. The Islanders won the match, 4-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. It’s possibly the first time that the team has ever played in the tournament, let alone won a game. Head coach Jessica Steinle said she couldn’t find any record of the Islanders making districts, except for a possible recollection of the team playing in the late ’90s. “I know we have never been to state and have never finished a season over .500,” said the coach. The team finished the season with a 9-16 record. After winning their first game of the tournament, Mercer Island started the second game shortly after the first finished, playing against Bishop Blanchet. Blanchet prevailed in the quarterfinals, beating Mercer Island 7-6.
The Islanders faced off against Seattle Prep, winning 7-5 before they faced Bainbridge, the team’s final shot at a place in the 3A state tournament. Bainbridge prevailed 8-5, ending the Islanders’ season. “I think the biggest key to success was determination,” said Steinle. “The girls were too determined to be defeated. Their hard work, perseverance and dedication to the team was impressive. We practiced six days a week this season and the girls would take their off-day to head to the cages. I think the team finally bought into our coaching philosophy/motto, and once they believed in themselves as much as we always had, they were unstoppable.” With all of the ups and downs for the team this year, and in previous seasons, their coach hopes they can carry forward the newly instilled pride of the team. “This is a hard senior class to lose because this is the group that believed they could turn the program around,” said the coach. “I hope my team learned that hard work and heart can take you farther than you ever imagined in

The Mercer Island girls lacrosse team knew it had a challenge facing it in the state semifinals, going up against one of the only two teams that the Islanders had lost to this season. Mercer Island faced off against Lakeside on Tuesday, May 14, falling 14-6 to end the season. The game got off to a quick start with Lakeside hitting the mark in the first moments of the game, but Mercer Island set a fast pace and followed suit, evening the score, 1-1. But Lakeside found its rhythm quickly, scoring nine more points in the first half, while holding the Islanders to just two points in the first 25 min-
utes. The score was 10-2 for the Lions at halftime. In the second half, despite solid scoring chances for Mercer Island, Lakeside continued to control the game, scoring another four points. Mercer Island surged late in the game, added four more points, but couldn’t overcome the deficit set early in the game. Dulce Moll scored three goals in the game, with one assist, while Saffron Snethen scored two goals. Taylor Dahlgren scored one goal in the match and Hannah Paborsky had three ground balls in the game. Mercer Island finished the season with a 12-3 overall record, and 7-0 in league play.

Girls lacrosse season ends at state semifinals
The Mercer Island girls and boys tennis teams won their respective SeaKing district titles on Wednesday, May 14. “We really enjoyed ourselves battling side-byside with the girls team to bring home the district title,” said boys head coach Jamie Dieveney. “Our team has so much depth that we were able to do very well in the tournament. That’s going to be the key for us to win state; everyone contributes.” In the girls competi-
tion, Islander senior Nora Tan earned a spot in the championship match after beating Holy Names’ Cello Lockwood, 6-3, in the semifinals. In the championship match, Catherine Allen of Holy Names beat Tan, 6-3, 6-1. In the girls doubles competition, Gabby and Lydia Venditti beat a duo from West Seattle, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the finals. The sisters faced off against a pair from Liberty in the championship match, which the Venditti pair won, 6-0, 6-1.

With the two wins, Mercer Island earned a bye on Thursday to play in the bracket on Friday, facing off against Newport. The Islanders lost 5-3, despite strong defensive play by the team and goal Kirbi Phillips. Later that night, the team played Lakes for a second time, winning 11-4. The Islanders finished the tournament on Saturday, May 18, against Bainbridge. Mercer Island was up 5-1 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a strong and aggressive offense. The team would go on to score 10 more goals in the match to win 15-6 for fifth place. As a team, Mercer Island outscored its opponents, 57-18, in the tournament, with seven of the 12 players on the Islanders’ squad scoring goals. The team earned the No. 1 seed out of the North division to qualify for the state tournament. This year’s team included: Jacque Li, Ileana Lam, Nola Peshkin, Mallory Phillips, Christina Williamson, Grace Thomas, Tia Ferri, Michelle Na, Kristin Hoffman, Jenna Sharman, Alicia Nordal, Kirbi Phillips and Ali Rorem. The Islanders are coached by second-year head coach Ryan Hall.

You only have one chance to make a first impression. We do it all the time in business or social activities. It is of paramount importance when marketing your home. I know you might think that because the Mercer Island market is so hot, homes will sell in a matter of days, often with multiple offers, why bother. To get your home sold for top dollar in your price range it is crucial to be prepared before you go on the market. The golden rule is declutter! This means counter tops, closets, cupboards and garages. Too much furniture is also a concern. Each room should be scrutinized to create cozy intimate spaces and a smart traffic flow from room to room. We all live in our homes one way, but must market a home to allow buyers to envision their lifestyle in your home. Lighting and color are both important. We live on Mercer Island with gorgeous abundant sunlight. Small rooms can look significantly bigger by using neutral colors that flow from one room to the next. Accent walls can draw the eye toward unusual nooks and certain architectural features of your home. Homes that are prepared correctly, balance artificial and natural light so that each space is warm and welcoming. Homebuyers buy on emotion and justify with logic. If a home meets the specific criteria of size and price, then the real question is, how does the buyer feel when they are in your home. Doing small repairs to areas in the home as needed or paint touch ups are simple, inexpensive and more likely to get you top dollar for your home in your market. That is why it is worth the extra time and expense to get your home ready to be viewed by buyers all over the world. -Julie Green Broker, Coldwell Banker Bain. It’s your move! I can make it happen!
