Metro Parks Tacoma's STAR Center earns LEED Gold certiďŹ cation Photo Courtesy Metro Parks Tacoma Metro Parks Tacoma officials have announced the South Tacoma Activity and Recreation (STAR) Center has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. "Stewardship of the environment and our natural resources is in the forefront of all Metro Parks Tacoma planning and design considerations," said Aaron Pointer, President Board of Park Commissioners. "We're extremely proud of how STAR Center reflects our commitment, earning the distinction of LEED Gold for this highly valued community center." STAR Center achieved the certification because of its geothermic heating and cooling system embedded in the earth to help regulate building temperatures; creative and efficient use of natural light; stormwater management through scenic rain gardens; collaborative use of shared class and gym space through strategic placement on a shared campus with the Boys & Girls Clubs and Tacoma Public School's Gray Middle School; and its use of sustainable building materials and operational features that consume fewer resources. LEED is the nation's preeminent program
for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. By using less energy and water, LEED-certified buildings aim to save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community. "The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most-important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on nonsustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health," said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. "The work of innovative building projects such as STAR Center is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement." Since it opened one year ago, STAR Center has served more than 110,000 program and event participants. The community is invited to celebrate with Metro Parks and learn more about the facility's environmental benefits during the center's one-year anniversary celebration on Sat., May 18 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. More information is available online at

Pierce County News Pierce County events
Cops step-up Cinco de Mayo DUI and liquor enforcement As communities throughout King, Snohomish and Pierce counties bring out their sombreros and Mariachi guitars in anticipation of the coming Cinco de Mayo weekend, law enforcement is making its own plans. Beginning on Sat., May 4, local, county and state police in the three counties will begin intercepting fiesta-goers who get behind the wheel after too many margaritas or beers. Officers will be especially targeting roads that are at high risk for impaired driving crashes in Tacoma, Puyallup, Seattle, Bellevue, Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, Renton, Burien, Seatac, Lynnwood, Marysville, and Everett. A Mobile Impaired Driving Unit operated by the Washington State Patrol will be set up in Kent to enable officers to transfer the custody of their arrestees to the unit's troopers so arresting officers can quickly resume their hunt for impaired drivers. "Although Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico, it has become an unofficial drinking holiday in the United States," said John Cheesman, Chief of the Fircrest Police Department and chairman of the Tacoma Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force. "Special pricing on drinks, tacoeating contests, and dance bands galore will draw many to restaurants and bars Saturday night." To curb the amount of alcohol drinking drivers might consume, law enforcement and Liquor Control Board officers working with the Home Safe Bar Program in the three counties will visit bars to remind patrons and servers about the state's alcohol laws. The officer team in Pierce County will be accompanied by family members whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver. To avoid being arrested, customers will be encouraged to pick up Click-it-to-ride cards at the following participating establishments: Azteca Restaurants in Pierce, King and Snohomish Counties; Mazatlan Restaurants in Pierce, King and Snohomish Counties; Taqueria el Rinconsito in Pierce and King Counties; Brouwer's CafĂŠ, (Seattle); LTD Bar and Grill (Seattle); Tapatio (Bellevue); La Cocina del Puerco (Bellevue); Rio Blanco Family Mexican (Auburn); Ixtapa (Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Monroe, Snohomish); El Paraiso (Everett, Silver Lake); and La Palmera (Everett, Mill Creek). The cards can be scanned quickly by smart phone users to dial a local taxi. These efforts to keep the roads safe have the support of the Hispanic community, including El Centro de la Raza, Consejo Counseling and Referral Services, and El Siete Dias. The Tacoma Pierce County DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force is administered by Pierce County Community Connections. The Snohomish County Human Services Department administers the Snohomish County Human Services and similar King County task forces are administered by the Kent Police Department and Public Health - Seattle and King County. All are funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. County's courthouse campus to see which building can save the most energy over the next 31 days. In support of Pierce County's new energy conservation policy and goal to reduce energy use by 15 percent, employees will be working together to reduce energy use in the County-City Building and beat Kitsap County. The County-City Building has already been successful at reducing energy use by 7 percent since 2009, which has accounted for 1.3 million kWh in electricity savings. The amount of energy saved has offset the building's greenhouse gas emissions by 912 metric tons, which is equivalent to the emissions generated from the consumption of 102,249 gallons of gasoline. The building has undergone various energy efficiency upgrades, including a window project that better insulates the building, new LED lighting that
