Historic clubhouse becomes TV studio Stars of Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” show film a segment at the VFW Hall By Reporter Staff
Silent Crow Productions, the producers of the “Deadliest Catch,” contacted the VFW in late March regarding the possible use of the Keewaydin Clubhouse for the filming of an episode of the popular show. VFW Commander Frank Sorba said he was contacted by Mika Duncan of Silent Crow. He does not know how they found out about the hall, which is available for rent by the public.
Over the next few weeks, an agreement was reached to rent the VFW Keewaydin Clubhouse for the filming, April 6-9. The production company paid the hall’s regular rental rate of $400 each day. Silent Crow art directors arrived a few days beforehand to stage the hall for filming. A crew brought in and set up new walls and furnishings, Sorba said. “The crew was fun to work with, and it was interesting to see how they transformed the hall into a cozy, welcoming living room setting,” he said. The segments will air on the show, which started its ninth season in April, later this season. There may be opportunities to
film future episodes at the VFW; however, there are no firm dates booked at this time, he added. Sorba said that the hall has long been available for the community and the public to rent for parties and events. He has been overseeing the remodeling and refurbishing effort begun by past VFW leaders. The hall was recognized just last week as a winner of the John C. Spellman award for the extensive restoration work done on the building that was built in 1922. Over the last few years, there has been a new roof, internal repairs and landscaping done, much of it paid for by donations and grants. Sorba said that a community group is being formed to fund maintenance for the historic building for the long haul. Sorba hopes that the hall can become an essential community asset. For information on the building, including rental information, go to www.vfwmercerisland.org.
Mercer Island School District board member Dave Myerson announced on Monday that he will be running to seek another term on the board this fall. Myerson, who was elected in 2009, said in a statement that he hopes to continue the work that the board has begun in his first term. “The focus of my work on the board is, first and foremost, the continuing academic excellence of Mercer Island public schools,” he wrote. “However, I maintain a balanced, holistic approach to education, which also includes the arts, music, athletics and clubs of all sorts. I also recognize that our record of distinction is only possible through the efforts of our excellent teachers. I support continuing relations with the MIEA (teachers union),”

After years, the state finally agreed to limit the number of lanes that cross the Island and cover the western end of the project. The plan was changed to construct a nearly onehalf mile long concrete lid, which was landscaped and turned into a park with soccer fields, ball fields, tennis courts and open space. In an email to fellow city Councilmembers and others last week, Grady said that he is keeping a promise to serve two terms only. “I believe that representative government means that many should have the opportunity to represent their community,” he wrote. Grady was first elected to the Council in 2005. Islanders Benson Wong and Rich Erwin have already said that they will run for Grady’s seat. Candidates have between May 13 and May 17 to file for elected office. The primary election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Editor’s note: Mike Grady is not related to Mary L. Groups plan state gun control initiative Councilman’s dog
By Reporter Staff
Religious leaders, law enforcement, public health leaders and victims of gun violence have announced plans to pursue a 2014 initiative to the Legislature requiring criminal background checks in Washington state. Religious leaders from throughout the state came together on Monday to announce plans to pursue a 2014 initiative to the legislature requiring criminal background checks for firearm sales in Washington state. The Legislature adjourned yesterday without passing similar legislation. “Today, we are announcing a statewide campaign to bring an initiative to the state Legislature calling for universal background checks,” said Rev.
Paul G. Ryan of St. James Cathedral in Seattle. “Preventing gun violence is not only a political issue; it is a solemn moral obligation.” The religious leaders initially organized after the December tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20 children and six adults lost their lives. Joining with the newly formed Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility, the coalition worked to pass background checks in Olympia, where it was a priority for a bipartisan team of legislators and Gov. Jay Inslee. When it was clear that the bill would not reach a vote, the coalition decided to adopt an initiative strategy to address this urgent issue of public health and safety. “We will no longer wait,” said Rabbi Daniel Weiner of Temple De Hirsch Sinai. Mercer Island City Councilman Mike Cero is the owner of a dog that bit a city maintenance worker at Island Crest Park on April 18 at 2:25 p.m. Cero, who has three dogs, said he often lets them run off leash at Island Crest Park. The maintenance worker said that he was attacked by all three dogs. Two of the dogs are miniature poodles and one is a standard poodle. One of the miniature poodles bit the man, who needed care afterward. Cero was in his car talking on the phone at the time of the incident. A witness was present at the park.

The Islander Pub will have a new home in coming months. The restaurant will be moving to the new Aviara building in Suite 150 this summer. The 4,700-square-foot space at Aviara has a liquor license notice in the window for the Islander Pub. The license will allow it to sell spirits, beer, wine and have a lounge. Phone calls to the Islander Pub have not been returned. The restaurant’s current building will be torn down and rebuilt into a residential mixed use complex. Leases for the businesses currently located in the building, such as the Islander and True Value Hardware, will end on July 1. The hardware store has already announced that it will be moving into the space next to Walgreens this summer.

hol and other substance use. Open dialogue within families creates strong trusting relationships that will hopefully end in good decision making. Many individuals have expressed to me that parents command rather than converse with them on alcohol use. Other parents shut down and never discuss the subject. Are adults afraid that kids are going to try to negotiate parental permission for drinking? Or do they think the reasons not to drink are just too obvious to clarify? My project is to ask citizens of Mercer Island to pledge to protect underage youth from alcohol. This also includes “older” friends of high school students who are the No. 1 providers of alcohol to minors on Mercer Island. I’m also asking parents of young adults to clarify their expectations that those 21 and over not become that source of supply to those younger. I invite you to pledge to play your role in protecting youth from underage alcohol use and to attend this event on May 7 to learn more. Standing together, we can promote change that will facilitate the healthy growth and lives of MI youth. We all need to ‘Pledge to Protect.’ There’s always that possibility that a single choice or conversation may have more impact than one initially foresees. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m., May 7, in the MIHS library.

To the editor Congrats to Council for civil gun discussion I want to applaud our City Council for its reasoned, civil discourse during the discussion to support the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition at its April 22 meeting. For an issue which has been so emotionally charged in this country, I was impressed with the intelligence and self-restraint shown by our Council members during the debate. Mercer Islanders should feel grateful that we have people of this caliber who are willing to serve us. Perhaps some in Congress could take a lesson from them. Cynthia Howe
Thanks to Dunham scholarship group Roughly 300 former teachers and students, city leaders, and friends and family members of scholarship finalists were present last Saturday to witness the sister of President Barack Obama award two $5,000 scholarships to young women about to finish their education at Mercer Island High School. Maya Soetoro-Ng and Barack Obama are daughter and son of Dr. Stanley Ann Dunham (now deceased), who graduated from MIHS in 1960. Soetoro-Ng described her mother in a 2008 Seattle Times article as “uncommon” and as being an “intellectual rebel.” We also witnessed in Maya that day a very warm, personal woman with solid presence. The room of smiles and frequent standing ovations attested to the approval and enjoyment of a remarkable

day. The criteria for receiving the scholarships last Saturday was exceedingly rigorous. While we claim Stanley Ann here on the Island, she quite frankly also belongs to metropolitan Seattle (she attended Eckstein middle school), and the entire nation. This is an annual event that has grown in stature on the Island, and deserves to be made even more prominent in promoting high education quality. Mercer Island has had decades of commitment to education, and, from what I observed last Saturday, will continue indefinitely. To the Scholarship Board: you deserve the Island’s thanks for a meaningful and fruitful year’s search for winners (all finalists were!), for the day’s ceremony and for bringing Dr. Soetoro-Ng to her mother’s high school. I trust we will hear much more from you in future years. Robert Fahrer
Will iPads really benefit Mercer Island students? My name is Greg Kim; I was the ASB president of MIHS for the class of 2012. I heard about the iPads being put into use and I had to say something. Honestly, when Dr. Gary Plano approached the leadership class when I still attended Mercer Island High School, I did not expect the idea to come into fruition, so I did not extend the discussion much further than an acknowledgement of the proposal. However, today my little brother came back
from school with the news that the project had already been enacted. As someone who wants this institution to succeed, I have a few things to say. The argument has already been made that the iPads are a waste of money. They are. The counterargument I heard while I was in school was that this money had already been of reasons: such as they are betallocated to technology as part of ter products and worth the extra the 2010 levy and could not be cost, or that the choice of iPads moved around to pay for teacher served some ulterior purpose for salaries, which are arguably more the purchaser. iPads are not worth important. the extra cost; they are purchased However, as a student who par- for the image they have create. ticipated in marketing classes and However, I think had to pull five comthe primary reason puters out of the lapiPads were chotop cart before I could sen is because of find an operational Send your letters to: their marketability. unit, I can guarantee editor@mi-reporter.com. Perhaps, forging this new image could be deemed an accomplishment or a new credential for the party responsible. This image is one that the Mercer Island School District is expending too many resources to advertise. While students of our generation do indeed use technology more than previous generations, the lack of technology in schools does not yet limit the effectiveness of current teaching. In fact, there are enough holes in the current system that our resources should be used to patch the cracks of our foundation before we begin to attempt to build higher. In a more macro sense, we should not allow our school district to become more corporate than it already is. We do not need iPads to advertise for us. Let our educated students be the marker for a good education system. Greg Kim ASB President, Class of 2012 Mercer Island High School

We are in the “Spring Market” for Real Estate March, April and May are traditionally strong market months for the real estate market on Mercer Island, and nationally. As home buying heats up even more, the sellers market continues. Our market shows a low listing inventory, increasing only slightly from January to March of this year. New regulations are springing up across the country slowing foreclosures, and bank inventory has adjusted, also influencing low regional inventory. In a discussion about the market in Builder Magazine, Trulia chief economist Jed Kolko disclosed findings from the digital real estate heavyweight’s latest consumer survey, which examined how people who’ve bought homes or are in the market to purchase a home feel about their purchases. It appears that buyers tend to want to purchase now vs. waiting until a year from now, while sellers tend to want to wait for the market to come to them. As a seller, this approach may lead to setting yourself up for some level of disappointment, which might be the actual definition of a sellers’ market. Remember, most sellers become buyers too, and as lenders continue to offer attractive rates the market is expected to continue its recovery. It is important to carefully plan your real estate transaction. Our Coldwell Banker Bain Brokers are well trained professionals, with expertise, education and guidance to assist in a comprehensive team approach to facilitating your next real estate transaction. - Josh Thurman, Broker, Coldwell Banker Bain EQUAL OPPORTUNITY HOUSING
