Tacoma Art Museum unveils design for $15.5M renovation

Images Courtesy Tacoma Art Museum Tacoma Art Museum officials Thursday unveiled design plans for the museum's new $15.5 million, 16,000-square-foot building expansion and renovation. The project includes the Haub Wing, which will feature the Haub Family Collection, one of the leading collections of Western American art. The project will create over 50 percent more gallery space and a more welcoming environment for the community to enjoy and explore the museum's collections, according to museum officials. The significant donation of iconic works by the Haub family, announced in July, aims to transform Tacoma Art Museum into one of the leading museums in the country featuring Western American art, according to museum officials. Designed by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, the project has a construction start date of fall 2013 and an opening planned for late 2014. "We are thrilled by Tom Kundig's elegant and sensitive design," said Tacoma Art Museum Director Stephanie A. Stebich. "He has envisioned beautiful new galleries for the spectacular Haub Family Collection as well as gracious new visitor entry spaces. He has given the museum a more prominent street presence along our city's main thoroughfare, Pacific Avenue, and has been respectful of the award-winning 2003 Antoine Predock building. For the community, we will be better able to share the story of Western American art as an integral part of the history of Northwest and American art, in all its richness and complexity." "This is a deeply meaningful project for me, for Olson Kundig Architects, and more importantly for Tacoma and the Northwest," said Tom Kundig. "The project touches so many spheres—art, civic design, our western heritage—it is thrilling to be involved in the creation of something so meaningful for so many people."

The design of the new Haub wing derives its aesthetic in part from its elemental simplicity and its use-driven design, taking its cues from pieces of Tacoma's history including traditional Native American long houses and railroading, according to museum officials. The new building will include an interior sculpture hall with high windows that will be shaded with exterior screens along Pacific Avenue. The shades have the scale and form of historic box cars. These screens will modulate interior lighting, shifting into different configurations by rolling on track rails along the top of the building facade. A new large-scale entry canopy will create a junction between the existing museum and the new wing as a public gathering area and will visibly announce the museum to Tacoma's bustling cityscape, according to museum officials. The adjacent Tollefson Plaza, in particular, was a traditional Native American gathering space. The project continues this tradition by creating a civic gathering place. A pedestrian scaled canopy, seating wall, outdoor artwork, and landscaping will animate Pacific Avenue and attract visitors.

'Safe Route' will guide Tacoma's Sheridan Elementary students In an effort to create safer areas for Tacoma's children, the City of Tacoma is partnering with Sheridan Elementary School on a Safe Routes to School project, which enhances students' walking and bike routes to school. With the help of a $379,960 Federal Highway Administration Safe Routes to School grant, the City of Tacoma will install curb extensions at crosswalks, new sidewalks and curbs with ADA-compliant ramps and secure bike racks at the school. The Safe Routes to School project will kick off on Sat., Apr. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Sheridan Elementary School, located at 5317 McKinley Ave. The event will feature a Clean Sweep from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided. In addition, there will be a Bike Rodeo from noon to 1:30 p.m. A free lunch, free helmets and fittings, bike repairs and bike giveaways will be provided. The City of Tacoma will also create educational programs and incentives to encourage students to walk or bike to school. The Tacoma Police Department will conduct speed and parking patrol around the school. Construction begins spring 2014 and is expected to be completed fall 2014. Community volunteers are needed to help with the kickoff event. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, contact Jennifer Kammerzell, Public Works Engineering at (253) 591-5511 or jkammerzell@cityoftacoma.org.

Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber selects CitizenSoldier Award recipient Posted online Weds., April 17 Photo Courtesy Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber The Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber announced Tuesday it has presented the 2013 Howard O. Scott Citizen-Soldier of the Year Award to Washington Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Stephen Ryan. For the last six years,Ryan has volunteered numerous hours with Pierce County Friends and Athletes, one of the largest independent Special Olympics programs in the state. The organization provides spiritual, social, educational and athletic opportunities for developmentally disabled youth and adults in an inclusive environment where activities are designed to be share with loving, nondisabled friends. He has assisted with the bowling and track and field events in preparation for the Washington State Special Olympics. Staff Sergeant Ryan is also the head usher at Lakewood New Hope Community Church, where he spent a year as a board member. He has been a leader in small group study as well as an active participant in the men's ministry. Staff Sergeant Ryan and his wife, Cathy, assist members of their church with the care of a child with Down syndrome and a young man with multiple mental conditions. In October 2011, after Pierce County Shuttle suspended its handicap rides to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Staff Sergeant Ryan stepped in and continues to give a ride to a wheelchair-bound employee of Waller Hall. Without Staff Sergeant Ryan's help, the employee would not have a way to get to and from work. Whether Staff Sergeant Ryan is serving as a loyal member of the Washington National Guard in uniform, or as an active, caring and giving member of the Pierce County community, Staff Sergeant Ryan's compassion, commitment and community impact and beyond makes him deserving of the Citizen-Soldier of the Year Award. According to Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber officials, Staff Sergeant Ryan is a valued non-commissioned officer who has served the Washington Army National Guard with distinction for more than 12 years. He is highly regarded in the maintenance community as one of the best practitioners of the Standard Army Maintenance System Enhanced. Staff Sergeant Ryan has performed flawlessly in any position he has held throughout his illustrious career. His off duty work with the 951st Maintenance Company's Family Readiness Program is a tribute to his dedication to his unit and fellow Soldiers. He continues to volunteer and give his personal time to the men and women of the 951st as a leader and mentor of our citizen Soldiers. "America's Credit Union was excited to present this year's citizen-soldier award," said Amy Tiemey-

Amy Tiemeyer, Military Relations Liaison at America's Credit Union presented this year's Howard O. Scott Citizen-Soldier of the Year Award to Cathy Ryan on behalf of her husband, Washington Army National Guard Staff Sergeant Stephen Ryan, who was on temporary duty assignment. er, Military Relations Liaison at America's Credit Union, which sponsored the award. "America's Credit Union has supported our area soldiers and their families since 1954, so it goes without saying that we would jump at the chance to honor such an exemplary citizen soldier." Each year, the Citizen-Soldier Award memorializes Howard Scott who grew up in Tacoma and served the nation when called upon during World War II. He returned to succeed as a banker in Tacoma, giving of his time to community service organizations, believing and enjoying this in his belief that doing so is one's responsibility.
