ucked away in the lower level of Skyline High School and hidden in a small science classroom, a group of students have launched themselves into the national spotlight.

Juniors Ian Walp, Crystal Liang, Kieran Dong, Pan Zheng and Griffin Johnson — members of the school’s Physics/Rocketry Club — qualified to compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge May 11 in Washington, D.C. The group is one of 100 teams selected from around the country and just one of two from Washington state. “It’s unique because it’s not the most wellknown club, it’s not the most visible club at all, so it’s pretty cool for everyone to be excited for them,” said physics teacher and club advisor Becky Fowler. The club first started designing its rocket in August and completed the project in December. In a recent qualifying launch at Redmond’s 60 Acres Park, they sent their 600 gram, 29-inch long projectile 747 feet in the

On top of meeting distance and time requirements, the group also protected an egg on the interior of the rocket using Tempur-Pedic padding. Walp noted the most unusual aspect of the rocket lies in its tube fins. “If we were going for just pure altitude we would want regular fins because tube fins have significantly more drag, but because of the aerodynamics of tube fins it also changes the way the rocket performs and it tends to be less affected by the wind,” he said. Three of the five team members, including Walp, Liang and Dong, qualified for the national competition two years ago as freshmen. They are looking forward to making the return to the nation’s capital.

“It’s always interesting to see how other people build their rockets,” Liang said. “I remember two years ago we saw a rocket that was put together with duct tape.” Dong said she enjoys the sight-seeing opportunities in Washington, D.C., but also is excited to scope out the competition in the NASA-sponsored event. “Some have very professional looking rockets, some have really professional looking paint jobs and stuff,” she said. “There’s lots and lots of local people who come to spectate.” This is the fourth team from Skyline to qualify for the event in the last nine years. Teams also qualified in 2004, 2005 and in 2011. Fowler said the most impressive part of her student’s accomplishment is they do everything by themselves. Fowler and Dave Walp, a volunteer advisor, help with suggestions, but that’s as far as it goes. “I don’t do anything because I can’t, not because I don’t want to,” Fowler said. “Everything is supposed to be 100 percent built by the students.” The only other Washington school to send a team to the national competition was Northwest Yeshiva High School on Mercer Island. There were 725 teams around the country who made the attempt. Only 100 teams, representing 29 states, met the qualifications.

Erickson Logging is seeking a new logging permit, this time for 95 acres of the 216acre parcel it owns on Squak Mountain. Bruce McDonald with the state Department of Natural Resources said a habitat assessment is required on about 40 of the acres, due to concern over a rare seabird, the marbled murrelet. Kurt Erickson said he will apply for a permit for the rest of the property at a later time, adding that he is still working to sell the property to King County. Appraisals are being done now, he added. The new permit excludes a large triangular piece that is higher up the mountain and contains old growth timber. Of concern is whether or not there is habitat for the marbled murrelets. The robin-sized seabirds forage in the ocean, but they nest in mature old-growth forests, exactly what is found high on Squak Mountain. McDonald said they found trees that were identified as potential platforms for the bird. Erickson said he does plan to have a study done to see if there are any active habitat for the birds on the mountain. The area to be logged now is what is referred to as the old camping club, which is directly off of SR 900, the IssaquahRenton highway. The group, Save Squak, argues that the parcels are not suitable for a clear-cut timber harvest based on the land’s topography and geology. It also says soil erosion, possibly leading to landslides after heavy rains, would impact travel on SR 900 and that heavy equipment and log hauling trucks entering and exiting SR 900 SEE SQUAK, 2

The fundraising goal is to surpass last year’s total of $280,000 in donations. Anyone is welcome to attend, and a donation of $200 or more is encouraged.

The college plans to open a campus in the Issaquah Highlands. Reservations are required and can be made online at http://bellevuecollege.edu/foundation/invite, through email foundation@bellevuecollege.edu, or by calling 425564-2386. More information on the luncheon can be found at http:// bellevuecollege.edu/foundation/ events/AnnualLuncheon.html.

The area outlined in red on this map is the property owned by Erickson Logging. The large triangular piece to the right, for now is off the table for timber harvest.

would congest traffic. “Flooding concerns for May Valley are not diminished by this planned 95 acre clear cut,” the group’s website says. May Valley resident Helen Farrington, whose property is below the triangular piece, said that after the downpour the weekend of April 6 and 7, May Creek rose one and one-half feet. “Water’s coming off the hillside as usual,” she said. Farrington is concerned that there is still a possibility of harvest on the upper portion, which could result in flooding. The DNR will accept comments until May 2.

IHS sophomore wins video contest BY LINDA BALL LBALL@ISSAQUAHREPORTER.COM

Hannah Balducci never has taken a video class, but the Issaquah High School sophomore won the grand prize in a recent “Influence the Choice” video competition. The Issaquah Community Network and its sub-committee, the Drug Free Community Coalition, launched the competition last November for middle and high school students to produce a public service announcement to influence their peers not to use alcohol or drugs. Judges called Balducci’s video “creative, unique and effective,” delivering a positive message that grabbed your attention. Balducci’s price included $500 from the Rotary Club of Issaquah and $300 from the Drug Free Community Coalition. The competition was the brainchild of

co-chairs Dianna Bugge and Caryn Cissna. A total of 137 students participated, with the winners all coming from Issaquah, Skyline and Liberty high schools. Hannah The contest was Balducci divided into three categories: Most influential alcohol video, most influential marijuana video, most influential prescription drug video – and the grand prize winner. Jonathan Ryder of IHS won for his alcohol video that depicted boys drinking, with one leaving the party and getting into his car. It is assumed he hits a pedestrian and kills him. The most influential marijuana video went to Tucker Russell and Jeremy Millar from Skyline. Ashton Herrild of Liberty won in the prescription drug category for a video that sent the message: “You’re the only one that matters.” Each category carried a $100 prize from the Drug Free Community Coalition. A total of 51 videos were submitted.

Sammamish pianist honored nationally A local pianist prodigy proved again he is one of best at his craft — this time at a national level. Nathan Lee, a fifth-grade student from Sammamish, won first prize in the Music Teachers National Association Junior Piano competition March 9 in Anaheim, Calif. Lee received a cash prize of $1,000 and performed in a Winners Concert during the 2013 MTNA National Conference. “The MTNA National Competition was an amazing experience for me,” Nathan said. “My piano teacher, Dr. Sasha Starcevich, my mom, and I worked really hard, so I was delighted when I made it to the national finals and even more so when I won the competition at the national level. I tried to think of the finals not as a competition but as my recital and tried to play as much beautiful music as I could, and I think that helped a lot.” Lee, the son of Jee-Young and Han Lee,

GUNS

Time to end cowboy culture

C

onnecticut has passed some of the strictest gun control laws in the country. The legislation targets gun-magazine capacity, background checks and expands the list of banned assault weapons. Colorado last month passed similar legislation dealing with background checks and limiting magazine capacity to 15 rounds. New York and Maryland also have tough laws. Sadly, our Legislature couldn’t or wouldn’t take a stand. And, things don’t look so good in Congress to deal with the issue. Some who argue against tighter controls on guns bring up the specter of the government going door-todoor confiscating guns of law-abiding citizens. But that’s not really the issue. Besides, if government really wanted to crack down on a “deadly weapon,” it would ban tobacco products. Craig Groshart Now, before I get cast – and castigated – as gun hater, let me assure you I’m not. As a kid I, and my friends, spent many afternoons plunking tin cans with a .22 rifle. I’ve shot skeet in a rural pasture in Snohomish County and done the same at a fancy – and expensive – gun club in Chicago. I inherited an automatic pistol and derringer from my father, who got them from his dad. The real point of tighter controls on guns is that doing so would help change people’s attitudes about guns and our gun culture. We romanticize guns as part of our infatuation with the West, no matter that it no longer exists. It’s time we put guns in perspective. Yes, they can be used to hunt and develop competitive skills. But they are inherently dangerous and their vast number and killing potential only makes it inevitable that tragedy will occur. ou might not know that the state of Washington has mandated that Issaquah (and other cities) accept thousands of new residents – and new jobs – in the years to come. This is due to the Growth Management Act, which dictates the distribution targets of projected population growth for each of the region’s cities. You also may not be aware that a regional governance organization, Matt Bott the Puget Sound Regional Council, whose charge it is to coordinate transportation, growth management and economic development for the region, has a formula that more or less “calls the shots” for which communities receive state and federal infrastructure dollars. This funding formula prioritizes “regional center” designated cities to receive additional dollars. And finally, you might also not be aware that the Issaquah City Council is preparing to vote on whether to pursue this “regional center” designation…a decision that will substantially improve our competitiveness for transportation/infrastructure funding. We are going to grow, whether we like it or not. Seeking funding assistance for critical projects to improve I-90 on/off access, enhance mobility options or bringing light rail or high capacity transit to Issaquah is the

responsible thing to do. These options help improve our existing capacity and circulation – meaning it’s easier to get around town. Issaquah has a number of transportation challenges. We have substantial regional (verses local) traffic routes (such as SR 900); we are geographically constrained by the Alps (which we all desire to see remain green). I-90 divides the community and downtown’s Front Street corridor has become a main thoroughfare because of past policy decisions. Issaquah is well known for its smalltown charm, citizen connectedness and hometown values – something that the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce and local leaders work hard at every day to support, preserve and enhance. But that doesn’t mean that Issaquah is not a part of a larger region that is anticipating significant growth. We need to make laser-focused decisions today that will ensure our competitiveness, sustainability and quality of life tomorrow. So, if you are tired of the traffic problems, please joion the Chamber and local leaders in voting YES to making good, solid transportation choices. The “regional center” designation decision is one of them. Matthew Bott is the CEO of the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce. He writes on topics relating to business, the economy and community enhancement.

here’s a scene in the movie Poltergeist in which the mom is running down the hallway in her home to save her daughter from the mean ghosts. But as she’s running, the hallway keeps getting longer and longer. As a parent of three kids in Issaquah, I feel like I’m living a similar nightmare with regard to college tuition. The cost of tuition in Jerry Vander Wood this state keeps going up – and up – and up. The cost of tuition at our state universities has doubled in recent years. UW tuition increased 20 percent in 2011-2012 alone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s going to get better anytime soon. Gov. Jay Inslee, in his recently-released budget, is proposing a “modest” five percent tuition hike for UW and WSU next year, with smaller increases for WWU, CWU and EWU. The pace is slowed, but the hallway keeps getting longer. The reason tuition is going up is because state support for higher education has been cut dramatically. In 1990 the funding per student was $17,000, with the state paying 82. In 2013, funding per student is virtually the same at $16,800, but the state is now only paying 29 percent. Certainly the tanking of the economy, and therefore state revenues, has provided legislators and the governor the difficult task of balancing the budget with few easy solutions. The process to create the next two-year budget for the state is not over yet. Hopefully legislators will find a way to at least freeze tuition rates for a year or two, and give families a chance to make some real headway down that hallway. Jerry VanderWood lives in Issaquah. children leadership and life skills. “We’re not unlike a school, we have a set curriculum,” Narula said. “Our idea is we use the mediums of academics, sports and extracurricular activities all to teach them leadership and life skills.” Narula said the difference between Positive Ally and other

programs is in the structure. The after-school program runs three hours, from 3-6 p.m., and is allencompassing. Children, aged 5-12, are picked up at school and given snacks before they enter an hour of academic reinforcement. That hour includes the completion of school homework first and foremost, followed by work on Individual Learning Plans set up by parents. The final hour involves sports or extracurricular activities. Sports, like soccer, basketball, running and Tae Kwon Do are available four days a week, while kids can participate in extracurricular activities like theater, nutrition, visual arts, science experiments and choir on the fifth day. Narula said the activities are all specialized and are run by experts. “Often you have a company that just does Tae Kwon Do, or just does dance,” he said. “There are no other companies that do the entire spectrum of sports, academic reinforcement and extracurricular activity.” What started as a group of four students nearly three years ago — one being his son and another a non-paying friend — has blossomed into 91 students and a wait list at three Redmond Ridge locations.

POSITIVE ALLY SAMMAMISH 22639 NE Inglewood Hill Rd 425-449-2530 www.positiveally.com That success has led Positive Ally to expand to Sammamish with a 2,000-square-foot facility, which will house 42 students, set to open June 24 in Inglewood Plaza. It is accepting enrollment for the summer and fall programs. The move only seemed logical to Narula, who said there are seven elementary schools located within 2.2 miles of the location. He said he hopes to open a new Positive Ally facility every year and has plans to open next in Issaquah. As far as missing the corporate world, Narula said the thought never crosses his mind. He loves his new endeavor and is glad he can still use some of his most valuable skills. “I always looked at myself, even when I was in general management, as a coach,” he said. “A coach does nothing but teach life skills and leadership skills.” Assistant editor Kevin Endejan can be reached at 425-391-0363. ext. 5054.

Major League gesture EC baseball captains give Options student unusual gift BY JOSH SUMAN JSUMAN@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

In 2012, the Eastside Catholic baseball team took the program to unprecedented heights. A Metro League championship, 3A state title game appearance and a host of walk-offs and suspenseful wins were just a few of the highlights on the field. But away from the field, the Crusaders are making sure 2013 will be just as memorable. On April 20, second-year head coach Kyle Larsen and his team get an opportunity only a handful of high school squads around the state get each year — to play at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners. The game is against 4A KingCo foe Newport, and is part of a joint-fundraiser with the Mariners that involves selling tickets to a game to raise proceeds. But it also came with the special honor of throwing out the first pitch at another game, April 13 against the visiting Texas Rangers.

Jane Dickison Finding someone to throw a ceremonial first pitch on a baseball team seemed like a simple enough proposition, but Larsen’s players had other ideas. The student they chose was Jane Dickison, a 20-year-old with intellectual disabilities and a member of the Eastside Catholic School Options Program. “We thought it would be really cool to involve someone from the Options program,” Gillespie said. Designed to give students with special needs a more typical high school experience, Options at EC has been one of the transcendent

programs at the school since its inception more than two decades ago. Along with work tailored to their own academic achievement levels, students in the program are enrolled in elective classes with the mainstream student body, participate in Special Olympics sports and part of a peer-tutor program. Dickison’s mother Terry said throughout her daughter’s time in the program, she has consistently been reminded of the benefits. “This is what we wanted for our daughter,” she said. “The teachers are wonderful, but I think it is the student-body and whole peer-tutor experience.” Terry said she still receives calls and emails from former peer-tutors, now graduated from Eastside Catholic and in college, who want to take Jane on outings or celebrate her accomplishments. After a recent dance recital, she said a pair of EC peer-tutors were waiting for Jane when she came off-stage, greeting her with congratulations and

Eastside Catholic baseball captains, left to right, Heyden Meier, Jeff Kepple, Alex Foley, Blake Gillespie were part of the decision to give an Options student the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a Seattle Mariners game. PHOTO COURTESY OF RHONDA BUNKDER flowers. “On her birthday, her cell phone wouldn’t stop,” she said. “I think it truly comes from their hearts.” Terry said her daughter is definitely a sports fan and participates in a variety of athletics through Special Olympics. In preparation for the game, she has been working with Foley and Gillespie on her throwing technique. “We’re all friends and we’re very comfortable working with

Options kids,” Foley said. “We just want to get her mind right out there. I think she is going to do great.” Terry said while her daughter is thrilled with the prospects and the family is exited to share her major league moment, the event is really more of a celebration of her years at Eastside. “From Day One, it has been an amazing experience,” she said. “It speaks to the whole school and to me, is one of the things that sets Eastside Catholic apart.”
