Velkommen til Poulsbo TABLE
W
elcome to Poulsbo and North Kitsap—a great place to work, live, and play. Our community boasts some of the most diverse and successful entrepreneurs in the Pacific Northwest. And we have some of the best outdoor recreation on our many, well-preserved open spaces. We have a dozen business centers that house large and small companies; and we have schools that consistently produce great test scores. We have high home ownership, high per capita income, high education levels among our citizens. We have a local government that is stable and proactively promotes both tourism and economic growth. In short, this is a great place to be. Come see for yourself. Stay a while or a lifetime. Welcome.
Pam Whitt, Board President
P
am’s enthusiasm for her community is typical of what makes Poulsbo special. Greater Poulsbo has a population that reinvests in our community financially and emotionally. You see it in the high level of volunteerism—in civic organizations, in our schools, in local churches. People don’t just live and work here, they belong here. They connect. They commit. As a result, we have groups dedicated to smart government, to better education, to safe and active shorelines, to green space and wildlife, to diversifying industry. We help one another succeed. The result is an exceptional quality of life. And for all of these reasons, entrepreneurs and business leaders relocate to Poulsbo. It makes my job a delight.

Little Norway on the Fjord
T
he deep, narrow, south-facing inlet of Liberty Bay harkens to the fjords of Norway. It’s no surprise that this picturesque location appealed to the families who found their way here in the late 1880s. Anderson, Eliason, Olson, Moe, or Martinson—you can still see the names on mailboxes around town, direct descendants of those hearty pioneers. Their journeys were arduous; their early years optimistic, as they began logging, fishing, milling, and farming. Poulsbo’s central location in North Kitsap led to its becoming somewhat of a commercial hub. The first grocery went up in 1886, followed by the church, school, wharf, hotel, and, naturally, the local codfish processing plant. The rich history of the Norwegian founders—and the Suquamish Indian tribe that was here long before them— is portrayed in photographs and documents by the Poulsbo Historical Society, located in City Hall.
Many family members of the original settlers still reside in this charming village, and its original character has been lovingly protected. Poulsbo has a current population of about 10,000 within its 4.5 square mile city limits. Downtown Poulsbo maintains a Scandinavian theme in its shops and restaurants, and is a popular international tourist destination.

The mild climate makes it an excellent, year-round destination for boaters, and there are three marinas, as well as anchorage in the harbor. August temperatures average in the mid70s; January averages are in the high 30s. Like the rest of the Puget Sound, Poulsbo averages nearly 54 inches of rain annually—but is surprisingly dry in August, September, and much of October.

Poulsbo is Open for Business
D
on’t be lulled by the charming quaintness of the historical downtown waterfront, with its promenade of galleries, restaurants, and shops—along a waterfront park complete with pavilion and boardwalk. This is also the home of a half dozen Inc. 500 companies. Greater Poulsbo hosts high-tech and high-touch; alternative energy developers and brewmasters; worldleaders in high-rise safety equipment, in micro-surgery, and in prosthetics; yacht designers, a destination grocery store, and a bread known around the world. It’s a great place to be an entrepreneur. The Department of Defense spends $3.5 billion annually in the state, and 70 percent of it—nearly all manufacturing—flows into Kitsap County. Specialty healthcare services are relocating to Poulsbo nearly every month. The fastest growing computer
company in the U.S. is just a few miles to our southeast; another IT startup to the southwest just got a $120 million contract from the IRS. Greater Poulsbo leads the region in two-year degrees; our high schools graduate at a better rate than all other Puget Sound counties. The highest per capita income in the county is in the Poulsbo community.
Yet with all that industry, all that economy, those who live and work here do so primarily for the quality of life. Nearly 80 percent of the land is green, much with a mature canopy. There are walking, biking, and kayaking trails. There are no gridlocked freeways, and very little violent crime. It’s a great place to raise a family.
