Metro shortfall puts island buses at risk County scenario shows one route cancelled, another route reduced

Cuts to the county’s bus system, should it fail to secure new funding by next year, could hit Vashon hard, according to a scenario released by the county last week. An illustration showing which bus routes could be affected should King County Metro cut 17 percent of its service next year has both of Vashon’s bus routes on the chopping block. Route 119, which runs between the north end ferry terminal and Dockton, is at risk of being completely eliminated, and 118, which runs between the north end and Tahlequah, could see reductions. The scenario, which Metro forwarded to the Metropolitan King County Council on April 1 as part of its annual report, showed that the entire county could see significant cuts inservice due to falling tax revenue and the expiration of a tempo-

Metro estimates that seven in 10 riders could be affected by the cuts, with 30 percent of Metro’s bus routes identified for possible elimination next fall, and another
FARMERS MARKET SPRINGS TO LIFE Despite drizzly weather, the Village Green was full of energy on Saturday as crowds of islanders showed for the opening day of the Farmers Market. Shoppers enjoyed early-spring produce such as radishes, kale and rhubarb, fresh fish and beef, locally made crafts and, of course, brightly colored spring bouquets. 40 percent of routes selected have some trips cancelled. The county would evaluate routes more closely and reach out to riders before any actual cuts are made.

Jacob Bain remembers the nights when he had to stand outside in the cold between sets because he was 17 — too young to be admitted to the bars where his band got its first gigs. As a member of Trolls Cottage, Bain came of age on Vashon, spending endless hours of practice with the band in a secret spot in the woods that was actually called Trolls Cottage. The music was fun and danceable, and Bain — a gifted guitarist, singer and songwriter — stood center stage when the band performed, wowing countless islanders who not only loved Trolls Cottage but who also literally watched this young man grow up. Now 32, Bain still plays with Trolls Cottage as well as another band, Publish the Quest. He still stands center stage, playing a rhythmic acoustic guitar before throngs of swaying fans. But he’s grown a lot since those early days; the music he now plays with Publish the Quest is more fully instrumented and textured, complex and innovative. Indeed, it seems, he’s pushed the boundaries of his music, both figuratively and geographically, traveling with Publish the Quest to countries in Europe and Africa and finding in his musical journey a remarkable sense of purpose. Bain sat down at the Red Bicycle Bistro last week, on a rain-soaked April afternoon, to talk about the twists and turns of his musical career and the meaning he’s found with Publish the Quest, which will perform at the Red Bike Saturday night. “I always knew that I was super passionate about songwriting and telling stories,” he said. “But it wasn’t until I started Publish the Quest that I made a conscious decision that I’d try to make a career of it.” Bain has a gentle and yet charismatic presence, complete with a piercing gaze and a flashing smile that makes a companion feel nicely rewarded for asking a good question. He’s also handsome, in the scruffy way that guys in bands are sometimes handsome, with hair of indeterminate SEE MUSICIAN, 19

A Beachcomber reporter who has won awards for both her news reporting and feature writing has been tapped to become the newspaper’s next editor. Natalie Johnson, 25, has replaced former editor Leslie Brown, who left the paper last month. “We were sad to see Leslie go, but we know Natalie will do a fantastic job as editor, said Daralyn Anderson, the newspaper’s publisher. Johnson, a Portland native, came to The Beachcomber in 2010 after earning a journalism degree from Whitworth University in Spokane. While in Spokane, she was also an intern at The Pacific Northwest Inlander, Spokane’s alt-weekly news-

Representatives from several agencies, including the sheriff ’s office, the Department of Transportation and Public Health - Seattle & King County, will be on hand to talk and answer questions. The county introduced the CSA program a year ago as the new model for engaging residents of unincorporated King County. The program was piloted on Vashon, and there are now five other CSAs. Painter said he thought the new model was working well. “The good folks on Vashon are very active in the community and with elected representatives as well. We’re just another forum for making it easier for folks ... to be heard on issues of conversation, he said.

An ice cream parlor, tucked behind the roasterie, begins its third season packages on Vashon. But the women’s roots went back to their families, who had both been in business in the West Seattle junction. “She knew my mother’s restaurant, and I knew her family’s bakery, DeLoach said. “I just thought it would be a good fit. And it has been a good fit, she added, harkening back to the days when local coffee magnate Jim Stewart got his beginnings serving ice cream and coffee in Coupeville. A sign from that business still hangs in the roasterie. When Kelly opened ZuZu’s, the recession was in full swing, and she said she did not know how busy the shop would be. “I didn’t think it would be this popular, she said. “It’s been great. Kids stop by after they swim at the Vashon Pool, soccer teams come in after games, and it’s a popular place when school lets out as well. Indeed, last Friday, on what some might have thought was a cool day for ice cream, four junior high students celebrated the beginning of spring break there, pronouncing the ice cream delicious before they hurried off to catch a bus.

When islander Sue Kelly retired from driving a UPS truck three years ago, she envisioned long days gardening on her two and half acres. But those acres are growing wild instead, and Kelly has found another calling — as ZuZu of ZuZu’s Ice Cream — the small ice cream shop tucked on the porch behind the Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. The shop, beginning its third season, features ice cream — organic and free of corn syrup — from three local creameries. Sixteen flavors rotate with the seasons, including fruit sorbets in the summer, toffee coffee crunch, lemon raspberry swirl, ubÊ — made from a tuber and popular with young girls for its pale purple color — and, a customer favorite, salty caramel. For ice cream-loving vegans, there is a top-notch chocolate mint made with coconut milk. After being closed for the winter, the shop opened again two weekends ago, under blue skies and with ice cream-tempting temperatures, which brought in a crowd.

Sue Kelly, who previously had never owned a business, has owned ZuZu’s, a small ice cream parlor, for three years. “We rocked the house, Kelly said. Kelly first opened ZuZu’s doors in July 2011, just months after retiring from 28 years as a UPS driver, 17 of them on Vashon. Eva DeLoach, owner of the roasterie, suggested she set up shop there, using the equipment that DeLoach owned and that previ-

Kelly, 58, named the business ZuZu’s after the nickname her dad called her based on a character from “It’s a Wondeful Life. For her, she said, the work is an act of love. The roasterie itself is a nice to place to work, she added, with plenty of regulars she enjoys talking to. Just walking in the door, she said, “changes your whole mood. She is there most of the time the store is open, she noted, and employs a part-time staff person as well, currently Christian Hasson. After so many years as a UPS driver, it is nice to come to know islanders in a different way than she had before, she said. Now, she jokes, she knows people’s first names, not just their last. Her gardening will have to wait awhile longer because she plans to keep the doors open at ZuZu’s for years to come. “As long as I’m upright, she said.

VIPP struggles to find foster homes for dogs By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer
Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP), the island’s animal rescue organization, is trying to increase the number of foster homes it has for both dogs and cats. Volunteers with the nonprofit say they hope several islanders will step up and offer a temporary home, and because each animal has different needs, organizers would like to see to several people, both individuals and families, come forward. “It’s good to have a variety to choose from, said Sheila Eckman, one of the organizers of VIPP’s dog program. Earlier this year, VIPP had only four dog foster homes, according to Geoff Fletcher, VIPP’s board president. That number is not close to sufficient, and in March, VIPP sent out postcards to every address on the island, inviting people to apply to be foster families. Several people have expressed interest, Eckman said, but additional volun-

They should also have a safe, dry place for the dog and be willing and able to provide enough exercise for it. Additionally, foster families must be comfortable with potential adoptees coming to meet the dog. When animals are part of the foster program, VIPP has ownership of the cat or dog and covers the expenses associated with its care, Fletcher said. VIPP relies solely on foster
families for the dogs in its adoption program. In 2012, Fletcher said, the organization took in 49 dogs and adopted all of them out. When there is no place to foster a dog — which has become a common situation — VIPP boards the dog in one of the island kennels, a costly proposition, as typical foster arrangements last about a month. And while the kennels provide excellent care, they can also be challenging for dogs long term. For cats, even though VIPP has a house that is home to about 50 cats, fosters would be helpful, especially for the two-week waiting periods VIPP imposes after taking a cat into its program and when there are litters of kittens in need of a temporary home. It is common for people to “fail at fostering,

both Eckman and Fletcher say — meaning the animal becomes such a part of the family, the foster individual or family adopts it. While that is good news for the animal, it often leaves VIPP with one less foster placement — another reason organizers hope several people will volunteer. With fostering, Fletcher said, people are helping not just animals, but the people who had to give them up and who nearly always are distraught. “The people who foster have enormous hearts to help out, Fletcher said. For my information, see www.vipp.org or call VIPP at 389-1085. Foster families must fill out an application, provider references and pass a home visit.
Little House put on the market Bettie Edwards, owner of The Little House, has put her building up for sale. Edwards, who has owned the shop since 1976, announced last fall that the past Christmas season would be her last. At the time, she said a childoriented business might fill the space, but that did not work out, and this past weekend, her bright yellow building on the edge of town went up for sale. Until it is sold, Edwards said it will be business as usual, with new merchandise coming in and some special events to look forward to. “Let the good times roll until the locks are changed, she said last week, citing the store’s unofficial new motto. She invites islanders young and old to follow
tradition and bring in their favorite stuffed animal for a new bow and Bettie Edwards heart and said she will close out — when the time comes — with two parties, one for kids and one for adults. There will also be a day for children to ring up their purchases at the register and measure their own candy. Edwards acknowledges that after 36 years, the change coming is a large one for her, and she is facing it with mixed emotions. “It’s one day at a time, she said. — Susan Riemer

Simple, sane eating plan brings good results
Funding for buses has reached the end of the line
Mid-life crisis results in a cycling trip across the country
This month Vashon’s bus riders got bad news. Unless the state finds new funding for King Country Metro or gives the county the authority to impose new taxes, bus service on the island could radically change. The county has made it clear that the so-called illustration of bus service cuts it released last week isn’t a formal proposal, but an example of what the future could hold. If service cuts are required, there’s a good chance Vashon could entirely lose route 119, and trips could be cut on 118. In some ways Vashon is an easy target for bus cuts. Our small population means that during non-commute times, buses sometimes carry just a few people, and empty seats cost the county. But Vashon is also more vulnerable than other parts of the region. If a bus is eliminated here, riders can’t walk a few blocks to catch a different bus or find a new connection. And our rural nature means that sometimes destinations are far apart and there are fewer options for getting around. We’re concerned that completely cutting route 119, along with any reductions to 118, will crowd morning and evening buses even more. We know many commuter buses are standing-room only during commute hours, and we hope the county will commit to continuing those trips, lest commuters put more cars on the road in Seattle. Perhaps of more concern, however, is losing the mid-day or evening buses that have low ridership on Vashon. While such buses are costly and not environmentally friendly, they are also a lifeline for some of Vashon’s most vulnerable: low-income residents who don’t own cars, elderly islanders who no longer drive or young people just trying to get to and from work. Mid-day bus service on Vashon is already sparse, and we’re worried additional reductions could leave some islanders out of options for getting where they need to go. The bus system isn’t the only one in crisis right now. For years the state has struggled to keep ferries running, to build new highways and to repair streets. Some of Vashon’s lesser-used roads are currently identified to crack and crumble because the county lacks funds to maintain them. Since the recession hit, state and county agencies have buckled down, cut workers and raised fares in an attempt to keep up with Washington’s transportation needs. We’ve now reached the point where only new taxes will save us from feeling the impacts of deep cuts. We hope that the state and county find reasonable ways to impose new taxes and that county residents consider the impact that reductions would have when they vote. And if deep cuts to bus service must happen, we hope that in closely examining each route — as Metro has said it will do — officials consider Vashon’s unique situation as an island and communicate with riders first. Perhaps officials can think outside the box and consider replacing lesser-used bus trips with smaller buses or VanPool service, an idea proposed by the county last year. Bus cuts could hit Vashon hard, but creative thinking could lessen the impact.
Over the last 30 years, I have had a variety of careers: dentist for 10 years, software entrepreneur, computer geek for a museum — that was a cool job — and most recently a salesman for a defense contractor. The only constant through all my career changes was my gradual weight gain. On my 49th birthday, I decided I was in a boring job that was smack-dab in an even more boring life. So with a tub of ice cream and a box of red wine, I decided it was time for a bit of reflection. As both containers began to empty, the contents were working their magic. With hands clasped behind me, I stalked around the den, planning and scheming. I stopped in front of a large mirror for a self assessment, and looking in my reflection, a couple of things became apparent. Clearly, purple teeth were not a good look for me. More importantly, someone needed to write a book explaining to anxious, middle-aged men that their body’s changes are natural. First there is the hair. It disappears from the scalp and reappears in the most unexpected places. Then there’s all the drooping, and those parts that don’t droop can hardly bend anymore. While I’ve never been very flexible, at that moment I was slightly less limber than peanut brittle. With the clarity that an empty box of wine brings, I made a new life plan: lose weight, get hair plugs, quit job, buy ear-hair trimmer, ride bicycle across country and stretch. I figured pedaling a bike for months on end would put some adventure back in my life and drop the weight. And if I was lucky, by the time I could see my toes again, I might be able to touch them. My cycling trip started out according to plan, and about halfway through I could see wrinkles in my clothes again. I was indeed losing weight. Then things took an unexpected turn. Some clown hit me from behind at 50 miles
LIGHTENING UP By CHRIS AUSTIN an hour, landing me in my sister’s spare bedroom for six months of recuperation. Not exactly the kind of adventure I had wished for. But onward I pressed. With a new bike and all my weight gained back from a steady diet of junk food and indolence, I set off again. In something of a surprise even to me, there I was several months later standing before the Pacific Ocean. After a month-long orgy of self-congratulation with old friends on the West Coast, I got a call from my cousin. He was taking his family overseas and asked if I would sit in his house and feed his cat in a place called Vashon. “Hmm, I thought. “This would be the perfect opportunity to write the book that’s been rattling around my brain. So I agreed, and two weeks later I opened the door to a dark house and a surly cat. One of my first acts was to step on the bathroom scale only to find out that after 4,000 miles of riding my bike, I had lost exactly 2 pounds. While the execution of my life plan had some success, it was not without its flaws. I was still overweight and I still needed hair plugs. But on the upside, my ear hairs were nicely trimmed. Now it was time for life plan 2, Electric-boogaloo. While gathering my thoughts for the book, I instituted a sea change in my daily diet. I focused on three key elements. The first was little or no processed food. The food giants have scientists working day and night to make food as addictive as possible, and up until then, I had been a willing victim. Second, no dieting. The thing I have learned about “miracle diets is that it’s a miracle the authors aren’t in jail for fraud. Crash diets are a short-term solution to a longterm problem. And three, cook my own food.

This is a big one for me because I loathe cooking. To me, salt is an exotic spice, and I need three cookbooks open just to boil water. For the next 18 months, I bought and cooked simple foods from the perimeter of the grocery store, i.e. fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy and some grains. That describes my diet all in one sentence, and it worked. However, it wasn’t without hiccups. I found that I could go about six weeks without the need for a food and drink bender. These food-fests were planned with mili-

For instance, one weekend revolved around candy from my youth, the 1960s. This sated my love of sugar and nostalgia and reminded me that half of the candy from the 60s mimicked tobacco products. There was the licorice pipe, the bubble-gum cigar and the sugar sticks that looked like Lucky Strike cigarettes. Ah, the good old days. Inevitably I would have to re-lose the weight from these episodes, but the anticipation was fun and the treats a welcome reward. The regimen of ordinary food worked slowly but predictably. I began seeing weight loss milestones: 30 pounds, 40 pounds, 50 pounds, until I finally I hit my goal weight of 100 pounds lost. If I had to describe my diet in a word, I would say, “invisible. It was just what I ate. For me at least, simple and sane became my miracle diet. And, oh yes, I did finish my book, two in fact, with one of them a satire on the diet industry. — Chris Austin is The Beachcomber’s circulation manager and a cycling instructor at Core Centric. It takes time, but eventually one learns the art of waving on Vashon Waving takes different forms in different cultures, including Vashon’s One eases into the gentle pace of life on Vashon, especially if one is from elsewhere and is, almost by definition, dim as a post about island ways. I speak from personal experience. Especially about the “dim bit. For example, let me bring to your attention the matter of waving — you know, people waving to other people. It has taken me several years to realize I do not consider it a good day unless the drivers of at least three cars heading south on the (misnamed) Vashon Highway wave at me as I head north every morning from Burton to that temple of gustatory ecstasy, Thriftway. People wave. I have no idea why. In fact, given the low angle of the sun on their windshields most of the year, I often have no idea who they are, either. But I wave back. I’m not sure why. Now, let me make something clear: I have lived in many places

where drivers will, on occasion, acknowledge the passage of another car in the opposite direction with a hand signal. For example, in Puerto Rico, where I spent what seemed like a decade one year, there was a universal hand signal: a rapid waving of fingers out the driver’s side window. This was, however, a dangerously ambiguous communication. It could mean the driver was waving hello to a friend on the sidewalk. Or, because driving on the sidewalk is common in Puerto Rico when traffic backs up at a red light, it could also be a warning to actual pedestrians who have roughly the same sidewalk status in San Juan as potential road kill. It could also mean the driver intended to turn left, or right, or stop altogether in the middle

Thank you for supporting the women’s film series at Vashon Theatre Woman’s Way Red Lodge sends a big thank you to all the folks who turned out and to Vashon Theatre and Island Green Tech for hosting and supporting our women’s film series. For the very nice woman who found me yesterday (March 31, 2013) alongside Port Robinson Road, near Luana Beach. I was walking my dog around 9:00 am and passed out. You found me and were persistent with me that I needed medical attention. In fact, I think you probably called 911. I was not quite with the program and I really wanted to just go home. Thank you for following me until Paramedics showed up. I really did not have any idea of how injured I was. I don’t know who you are, but THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You are an angel.
smiling and reminding you that they’re your neighbors. Some are regulars at the Burton Coffee Stand and they’re waving because you blew the morning quiz: “What was last night’s Jeopardy final question? and they’re thumbing their noses. They have no mercy. The waves vary, especially among men. Some guys will give the usual high five as you pass, but some — the gearheads — will flash the headlights of their sports cars or expensively restored antique pickup trucks (which apparently get equal billing here). That’s a wave, too. Which is confusing, actually, because they may also be warning you of a speed trap. But, as they say here: “It’s all good. All of this, of course, is an artifact of the fact that this is a small island and, whether you like it or not, you become known. And recognized. And waved at. There’s no escaping it. It’s bizarre. Unnerving. And wonderful. Wave on, Vashon.

You’re always talking about landslide hazards so now I can’t find a buyer for my house! We have had a few small slides in this neighborhood but I’ve lived in this house for over 30 years and I’m still here. Why do you keep scaring people away?
Well, first I must say that I’m flattered that you think every potential buyer for Vashon Island property reads what I write. But I don’t think so. Slides do happen here, as they do throughout the Puget Sound region, and some of them have resulted in major damage and injury. I always warn potential buyers to seriously consider the ramifications of being in a slide hazard area. I have not spoken to anyone concerning your specific house, so your lack of buyer interest may have more to do with the price than the location next to a slide prone cliff. Since you are currently off the market I’d like to offer you an idea that may be helpful. You might consider hiring a good geotechnical engineer to do an assessment of the property. You can offer the results to potential buyers. If the results are generally positive, you will ease their mind about buying your place. If the report is very negative, you can get a bid for whatever work the engineer recommends to protect your home. There are some engineering ideas that can be very helpful. Anchors, foundation reinforcements, retaining walls, etc. could ease a potential buyers mind. These things are not cheap. But they could make the difference between selling your home or not. Even with no one specifically calling their attention to slide hazards, buyers have online resources that identify soil types and slide problems. I have a friend who had to do some major engineering work to reinforce the bank below her home. It was costly, but when it was time for her to sell, that work went a long way toward getting her top dollar for her place. She felt that she wouldn’t have done that well if the slide area issues had not been solved.

Andre Feriante, a world-class Spanish and classical guitarist as well as a poet, singer and songwriter, will perform with The Bohemian Entourage at 8 p.m. Saturday, at Vashon Allied Arts’ Blue Heron Arts Center. For 20 years, Feriante has made his living as a performing artist, releasing 11 albums and playing concerts worldwide. Yet, he said, his motivation for performing is personal. “I play for my own healing and for close friends — a wide audience is icing on the cake, Feriante said. “It’s a gift that I have to pass on. Feriente defines himself as a cross-over artist, and his repertoire contains a wide swath of eclectic music, from Bach to Leonard Cohen, flamenco improvisation to jazz standards, to poetry by Federico Garcia Lorca, Rumi and Feriante himself. His concert on Saturday will also include Beatles songs from his newest album, Beatles Masquerade. On stage, Feriante surrounds himself with Northwest-made guitars and a ukulele. His back-up duo, The Bohemian Entourage, is Vashon’s own Jason Everett on 7-string and stand up basses and Stella Rossi, flamenco dancer with ballet and modern dance experience. Shortly after meeting, Welch said, they got together for an epic impromptu jam that lasted for almost six hours. Carson has performed on stage since the age of 8, when he started busking in a twinfiddle act with his sister Kendel Carson. The first visitors to Vashon’s first Farmers Market of the year were greeted to a spread of spring offerings with free daffodils to take home. “We always give them something to welcome them back to the market, said Merilee Runyan, president of the Vashon Island Grower’s Association. And many were welcomed on Saturday, Runyan said. Despite some afternoon rain, marketgoers returned in force to peruse fresh produce, mingle in the Village Green, check out local artisans’ latest work and enjoy lunches made fresh on site. Flowers and early spring veggies were to be had in abundance, as local farmers offered up their first kale, baby turnips, radishes, rhubarb, swish chard and more. One farm even reported selling out of its produce. “It was certainly a positive, happy way to start the market, Runyan said. The Farmers Market is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays until December at The Village Green.

Two wins are twice as nice for the Pirates Vashon baseball team beats Bellevue Christian twice in a row
By CATE STACKHOUSE For The Beachcomber
By RITA ALLMAN For The Beachcomber
The Vashon High School baseball team faced Bellevue Christian twice last week and pulled off two big wins, beating the Vikings 9-0 and 9-3. A new entry in the Nisqually League this year, the Vikings visited Vashon on Tuesday, April 2, to battle it out with the Pirates. Josh Myer was on the hill for Vashon and continued a run of excellent outings from the Pirate pitching staff. Myer threw a complete game shutout, allowing only one hit and one walk. He struck out 12 batters. Myer was in complete control from the first pitch until the final out. The Pirate offense supported the fine pitching effort, scoring nine runs as a result of eight hits. The offense was also aided by eight base on balls. Vashon opened the scoring with three runs in the first. They added single runs in the third and fourth innings and rounded out the scoring with four runs in the sixth. Myer led the hitting attack, going two for three with two singles. Clyde Pruett added a double, and Zach Drape, Kelly Sullivan, Ryan Bernheisel, Sam Schoenberg and Colton Alberthal all had singles. The defense was solid again with only two errors. Line score: Vashon 9 runs, 8 hits, 2 errors, Bellevue Christian 0 runs, 1 hit, 4 errors. Vashon played the Vikings again in the rain last Thursday at Bellevue Christian and defeated them again, 9-3. Good Pirate pitching was on display once again in this game. Ezra Lacina was on the bump for Vashon and pitched a two-hit complete game. He struck out seven and gave up

The Pirates never trailed after scoring one run in the first on an RBI single by Kelly Sullivan. Vashon piled on two more runs in the top of the second. A single by Colton Alberthal ignited the offense, bringing home Sam Schoenberg. That was followed up by a Josh Myer single, plating Alberthal. The Pirates scored four runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Lacina, a two-run double by Sullivan and a ground-out by Clyde Pruett. The Pirates pushed across one run in both the fifth inning and the seventh. In the fifth, they scored on a fielder’s choice, bringing home Alberthal.

Myer paced Vashon at the plate. He went three for five, drove in one and scored two runs. He singled in the second and fifth innings and tripled in the seventh inning. Alberthal was two for four with two singles while Lacina and Sullivan both went two for five. Schoenberg and Ryan Bernheisel each added a single to the hit total. Line score: Vashon 9 runs, 11 hits, 2 errors, Bellevue Christian 3 runs, 2 hits, 2 errors. The Vashon boys lacrosse season is heating up, as the team added another impressive win to their record last week. The Vashon Vultures beat Highline High School’s lacrosse team, 17-7. The teams were evenly matched for the first half of the game, but in the second half,w Vashon picked up the energy on offense and fought for their win. Senior Caz Mozeleski led the team in scoring with a total of seven goals and was followed by junior Griff Jennings, who had three goals and two assists. The Vulture’s defense also played a major role in this win. Goalie Marquis Stendahl had 17 saves in this game, a personal record for him. The defensive line worked hard the entire game and always fought for ground balls. Junior Ian McWhirter led the defensive ground balls with a total of five. He was followed by sophomore Henry Hyland, who had a total of three. With five games left in the season, the Vultures are heading toward their goal of making state playoffs and working harder than ever. The Vultures will play at home at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, against Overlake High School. — Cate Stackhouse is a team manager for the Vashon Vultures.

Master, junior rowers leave opponents behind in the Montlake Cut By PAT CALL For The Beachcomber
A 2,000-meter sprint race through the fabled Montlake Cut between Lake Washington and Lake Union was the venue for Vashon rowing’s first-ever appearance in the Husky Open regatta on Saturday. The event continued the pattern of blustery weather from earlier regattas this spring, and the course was shortened to 1,500 meters due to perilous conditions at the starting line in Lake Washington. The invitational event was hosted and put on by the University of Washington’s coaching staff. “In an invitation race like this one, you are always a little worried about embarrassing yourself with a last-place finish said master men’s eight stroke Bruce Morser. But the hard work over the past few weeks of rowing before dawn on Quartermaster Harbor paid off for the masters with a second-place finish to a highly regarded Cambridge Boathouse eight, a recent winner of the Head of the Charles, the largest regatta in the world.
The Vashon lineup of Morser, Colby Atwood, Anton Adam-Fuchs, Ed Zapel, Scott Engelhard, Chad Magnuson, Mark Ripley and Bob Horsley, with coxswain Heather Dow, was elated to beat two area powerhouses, a combined Pocock/Ancient Mariners crew and a boat from Sammamish Rowing. Vashon’s junior rowing team entered three boats in the event, coming away with two first-place wins and a second-place finish. The girl’s varsity quad of Kalie Heffernan, Kirsten Girard, Anna Ripley and Hannah Russell, coxed by Olivia Mackie, won a tightly contested race against area rival Seattle Rowing Center with a margin of about 4 seconds. The girls varsity four of Taegan Lynch, Maya Krah, Emmie Kehoe and Bryn Gilbert, coxed by Ally Clevenger, had an easy time overcoming the Lake Union crew for another first-place finish in the last race of the day. Racing times in rowing often mean nothing and sometimes mean everything. Comparing times between one race and
another is made challenging by changes in surface water conditions, tides, currents, winds and competitive urgency. In a 2,000-meter race, a very fast masters or juniors eight boat can approach a time of six minutes. A more typical race pace for mortals yields an average speed of 11 to 12 miles per hour. So one second of race time equates to about 5 meters of distance, meaning that a “boat length of race distance for a 62-foot, eight-person shell is equivalent to about 4 seconds of race time. When boats are seen overlapping at the finish, that means their times are not more than four seconds apart. At last year’s junior nationals, Vashon’s boys quad captured second place by 18 milliseconds, a margin over the third-place boat of about 3 inches in a mile and a quarter race, proving that in some cases rowing time means everything.
The importance of just a few seconds was evident last weekend when the boys quad took on the powerhouse Seattle Rowing Center quad. The boys team of Tate Gill, Gus Magnuson, Jacob Plihal and Isaiah MoserRohe, with coxswain Liv Mangione, pushed hard but finished a close second place, just six seconds behind a strong Seattle Rowing Center crew. Coach Richard Parr was pleased with the day’s results. “Competing against some of the best crews in the Northwest and, in the case of the master’s men, in the country, showed that Vashon’s master and junior crews are making great progress for this time in the spring season, he said. — Pat Call is a recreational rower and the father of two junior rowers.

taking a look at our most current data. Metro has faced budget shortfalls since 2008 due to declining sales tax revenue. The agency faced a similar funding crisis last spring, but was bailed out when the Metropolitan King County Council enacted a new $20 car-tab fee. That fee, however, is set to expire in June of 2014, leaving Metro with a $75 million annual budget hole. What’s more, the agency has raised fares four times in recent years , cut dozens of employees and used up most of its reserves to retain service. In the past year, it also eliminated some of the trips with the lowest ridership, including some on Vashon. “We’re in a worse position, Obeso said. “We’re basically affecting routes that carry more and more riders even though they’re still in the bottom 25 percent. Some of Vashon’s regular bus riders have expressed alarm at the possible reductions, saying they think the island’s bus service is already too infrequent. “I don’t see how you can reduce the bus service even more on Vashon and fit all the people on the bus who want to ride the bus, said Chris Townsend, who rides the 118 to his job in downtown Seattle each day. Townsend’s bus is popular and likely wouldn’t be cut, he said, but he does worry

Chris Gaynor accompanies SSG Will Carroll last Veterans Day weekend, when Carroll and others hiked 60 miles to raise awareness about veterans issues.
Local veteran is honored Islander Chris Gaynor, known to many islanders for his 2011 exhibit, “Home of Record: Vashon and the Vietnam War at the Heritage Museum, was recently elected Veteran of the Year for Washington’s District 2 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Gaynor was nominated by Roy Bumgarner, the commander of Vashon’s VFW Post 2826, and Olde John Croan, who currently serves as the chaplain of the post. “I have all the respect in the world for Chris, Croan said recently. In his letter nominating Gaynor, Bumgarner noted the success of Gaynor’s exhibit, which garnered the Best Exhibit award from the Association of King County Historical Organizations and was recognized by the Washington Association of Generals. He also noted that earlier this year Gaynor traveled to Washington D.C. to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial to honor the 12 Vashon sons lost in Vietnam and four other comrades. He then traveled to Virginia, Georgia and Florida, visiting the families of fallen comrades along the way. Bumgarner also mentioned that last Veteran’s Day, Gaynor provided con-

siderable support to three Iraq war veterans who hiked through Vashon on their trek from Naval Base Kitsap to Joint Base LewisMcChord and arranged for each of the men to receive an American Hero Quilt. Additionally, Bumgarner noted, Gaynor volunteers each week at a free community meal for people in need. Gaynor, who is expected to be voted commodore of Vashon’s American Legion Post 159 next week, is also one of the custodians of Robert Bennedsen’s grave at the Vashon Cemetery and cares for the seven graves of the island men who were killed in Vietnam, cleaning them before Memorial Day and Veterans’s Day each year and placing flags on the graves. Croan, who said he has known Gaynor for at least 15 years, noted that all of these tasks are commendable, but they are even more noteworthy because Gaynor suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, a result of his exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam. Gaynor said he was honored to have been selected. “I will do my best to do an even better job this year than last in my veterans’ activities, he said. — Susan Riemer

length cinched back in a knot, a strong jawline and cool, casual clothes — in Bain’s case, a T-shirt, hoodie and baggy corduroy jeans — that seem perfectly mismatched. But Bain’s charm is only part of the package — he’s also resourceful, ambitious and determined to make a difference through his work with Publish the Quest. He’s funded his music career by making money “any way I can,â€? he said. He’s traded carpentry for time in a recording studio and also signed on for four two-month fishing trips to Alaska in recent years. He’s also lived simply, returning from Seattle a couple of years ago to settle on island property his family owns, in a house he built by himself. “I dump every single penny I make back into the band,â€? he said. The hard work is paying off. Working with a nonprofit called Learn Africa, Publish the Quest has made several recent trips to Cape Verde, Zimbabwe, Mali, Poland, Portugal and Spain, where band members have played in festivals and music halls, recorded with local artists, and conducted music workshops and jam sessions with underprivileged children. On their most recent trip to Zimbabwe, last summer, the band brought along a trove of donated instruments and soccer balls to give to kids in Harare and Hatcliffe Extension, a slum just outside the city. He’s also collected instruments from islanders to deliver to a music school in Cape Verde. An impressive roster of international stars has collaborated with the band — Femi Kuti, Nneka Lucia Egbuna, Matt Chamberlain, Eyvind Kang, Radioactive, Oliver Mtukudzi and Vieux Farka TourĂŠ have all joined forces with the group on recordings and in concert. A recent single, “Sodade,â€? was recorded with Cape Verdean vocalist Laise Sanches, with all proceeds from the sale of the song going to the music school in Cape Verde. Bain said he has found great inspiration in working with kids and musicians in Africa — people he said had “an insatiable appetite for music.â€? To simply spend time with children in Africa, he said, has been a joy. But Bain is also helping young people

Jacob Bain stands outside the Red Bike, where he will perform with his band, Publish the Quest, on Saturday. here at home, by serving as a musician mentor to several island teens set to perform in an upcoming Sharing the Stage show at the Open Space for Arts & Community. It’s a busy time: Bain is currently working on a new Publish the Quest album as well as a short film that will document the band’s work in Africa. The film, called “The Truth About 99 Cents — a reference to the cost of buying a song on iTunes — is about the international cooperation required in the making of Bain’s new song “Shine, a recording made with Zimbabwean stars Edith Weutonga, Mtukudzi and a seven-member children’s chorus of girls from an orphanage in Zimbabwe. The title also references Bain’s intention to give all the proceeds from the sale of the song back to the orphanage. And at the end of the month, Bain will head back to Zimbabwe to play once again at the country’s largest festival, in Harare, this time joining forces with a renowned Spanish and classical guitarist, Samuel Diz, and Publish the Quest’s drummer, Caleb Cunningham. He’s also looking forward to heading back to Hatcliffe Extension to hang out, play music and give a few more guitars to the kids he has gotten to know on his past two trips to Africa. “We’ll get to see all our buddies again,

he said with a brilliant, big smile. “Some of the kids there live in a pretty hard way,
so we bring food out and we are just total goofballs with them — we play soccer and put on shows. He’s looking forward too, he said, to hearing how their musicianship has improved in the past year, since Publish the Quest has been funding twice-monthly music lessons for a group of children in the slum. Bain has Seattle shows lined up for Publish the Quest when he returns, and for islanders, a special treat is in store: Trolls Cottage and Publish the Quest will play back-to-back concerts on two nights during this summer’s Strawberry Festival. Bain’s ultimate goal, he said, is to “bounce back and forth between Europe and the West Coast with Publish the Quest. To do that, he’ll no doubt call on what he said were defining aspects of his personality. “I have that spirit of not having fear to go for things, he said. “I’ve always felt adventurous and wanted to push the limits.
Publish the Quest will play at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Red Bicycle Bistro. There is an $8 cover for the show.
