State finalizes plan to bring order to harbor By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

After more than two years of planning and outreach, the state has completed its plan to more closely manage boat moorage in Quartermaster Harbor, with hopes of protecting the important aquatic habitat and making the harbor safer for boaters. The 60-page plan, released today by the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), outlines how the state will remove abandoned buoys and other debris in the harbor and require boat owners to install new environmentally friendly anchor sys-

tems and register their buoys, placing them in specific locations mapped out by officials. The final plan also responds to some of the top concerns expressed by boaters during the planning process. Islanders with buoys in the harbor will be required to comply with new regulations as soon as one year from now. “I feel really good about how the community has voiced what they’ve seen, the issues,” said Lisa Randlette, a planner with DNR’s Aquatic Resources Division and the principal author of the plan. “I feel like the community has stepped up and articulated

their concerns for the harbor. ... It’s turned out much better than I could even hope.” Randlette and other DNR officials say that in recent years the state has grown increasingly concerned about the condition of Quartermaster Harbor, part of the protected Maury Island Aquatic Reserve. The number of boats in the harbor has grown significantly, and today the bay contains clusters of boats that are too close together, abandoned buoys that pose navigational hazards, anchors that drag and damage the underwater habitat SEE HARBOR, 18

Latino group comes together to support its youngest By ELIZABETH SHEPHERD Staff Writer

A group of islanders working to support Vashon’s Latino population is gaining traction, and their latest effort — to ensure that more Spanishspeaking toddlers get a chance to attend preschool on Vashon — will bring a mouth-watering spread of Latin cuisine to this Friday’s Gallery Cruise. The feast, which will include such treats as handmade taquitos dorados, tostaditos and pastel y galletas, is being offered free of charge in the hallway of The Wallflower Building, starting at 5:30 p.m. until the food runs out, on Friday. But Alejandra Tress, a member of the informal group called Comunidad Latina de Vashon, said that she hopes islanders will not only come for the free food, but also donate generously to the group’s scholarship fund for preschoolage, Spanish-speaking children. “Our community has a tendency to be invisible,” she said. “I have witnessed kids who go into kindergarten who don’t speak any English.” Preschool, Tress believes, benefits all children in a number of ways, but the need is especially great for Latino children who grow up in households where only Spanish is spoken. Alternative school administrator selected to head VHS Edmonds principal has connections to the island By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

The Vashon School District has chosen the current administrator of an alternative school in Edmonds to be the next principal of Vashon High School. Danny Rock, the principal of Edmonds Heights K12 and a young father with ties to Vashon, was selected following a two-month search to replace current VHS principal Susan Hanson, who announced her retire-

ment last year. Superintendent Michael Soltman, who headed a 16-person search committee and made the final decision, said Rock, who has also taught at high school, emerged from among 17 applicants as the clear best fit for the job. “There was really, really strong support on the part of the search team,” Soltman said on Monday after he announced his choice to school district staff. “I think the combination of his (high school) experience along with his alternative education experience gives him a well-rounded toolkit.” Soltman will recommend Rock’s hiring to the Vashon school board on Thursday. He

expects they’ll vote in support of his decision. Rock, 37, has been the principal of Edmonds Heights K12, an award-winning alternative school with about 500 students in the Edmonds School District, since 2007. The school serves a wide variety of students who opted out of traditional school, from advanced elementary schoolers to high schoolers who struggle in a regular school setting. Each student has his or her own learning plan, which incorporates work both in and outside of the classroom, and parents are highly involved in the process. “It explores lots of different ways learning SEE PRINCIPAL, 19

Vashon High School will overhaul its class schedule next school year, changing from its current threeterm schedule to a semester system. A 17-person committee tasked last fall with rethinking the middle school and high school class schedules recently put forward a proposal to move the high school from a three-trimester school year with five classes each term to a two-semester school year with six classes each term. Superintendent Michael Soltman approved the plan and announced the change at last Thursday’s school board meeting. The high school has been on a trimester schedule for more than a dozen years. “Their recommendation was based on good, solid research of the best practices of high-performing school districts and really answered some of the deepest concerns we had about the current trimester schedule, Soltman said in an interview. School district officials say there have been concerns and complaints about the trimester system at VHS for years. Many core classes are only assigned for two of

fewer credits, potentially giving them a disadvantage in college admissions. One student even created a Facebook page and online survey to protest the change and spoke against the plan at a school board meeting. The survey garnered more than 80 digital signatures. Spencer and other administrators, however, said the committee vetted those concerns and still felt the semester system was the best option. College admissions offices take into account class schedules, Spencer said, and while some students would see their elective options limited, each student will be affected differently, and there will also be more opportunities for advanced placement classes. Next school year is a good time to implement the new schedule, Spencer said, as many teachers are already reworking their curriculum to meet new state guidelines. The district is currently working out how various classes will look under the new schedule, and it will likely provide teachers training as they work to adapt their curriculum. Spencer said the plan had wide support from teachers, especially those who wished to have students in class for an entire school year. “Like anything, when there’s a change there’s a significant amount of work that needs to happen, and you want to make sure it goes smoothly, Spencer said. “In general, we’re feeling very good about the decision. We made it with a lot of research and a lot of feedback, and we’re looking forward to making the switch. — Natalie Johnson

three terms in a year, creating gaps in instruction that some say can be problematic, especially in skills-based classes. And when state testing occurs, some students have had more instruction in certain subjects than other students. The committee, headed by VHS Assistant Principal Stephanie Spencer and McMurray Middle School Principal Greg Allison, spent months researching high school schedule options, surveying top schools, visiting other campuses and gathering feedback from students, parents and teachers. When it put forward its recommendation last month, the committee said a semester system would not only eliminate the troublesome gaps in instruction, but align the high school’s schedule with the middle school’s, making it easier for advanced middle schoolers to take classes at the high school and for teachers to split their time between the two schools. Many VHS students, however, voiced concerns about the plan, saying it would give them fewer opportunities to take elective classes and would allow them to earn

In Vashon’s own rite of spring, the Farmers Market will open for the season this Saturday at the Village Green. Opening day will feature daffodils for the first shoppers and many of Vashon’s favorite farmers, artisans and musicians. Adri Yarkin, 13, the daughter of farmers Celina and Joe Yarkin, will open the festivities by playing the bagpipes. Saturday will also be the first market for the new market manager, Johanna Guevin, who has visited many of the farmers and artisans. “It’s going to be phenomenal to see everyone’s wares on the table, she said. “I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone’s display and the pizzazz. Thirty-six vendors will be on hand, with several

market stalwarts, including Green Man Farm, Sun Island Farm, Pacific Potager, Tease Chocolates, Hedy’s King Caramels, Vashon Winery and Rainy Day Garden Soap, Guevin said. Snapdragon and La Biondo will provide food for shoppers, with Zamorana joining later this season. No new vendors will be at the market on Saturday, but several have approached Guevin, she said, and are expected to join as the season goes along. This year market organizers hope to include more educational activities, such as cooking demonstrations and interactive activities for children. First up will be a workshop on marketing psychology on April 28 that Guevin said she expects will benefit growers and artisans alike. The market will also offer a lending library with books and DVDs about farming

A small shop with a distinctly local flair will be the scene of a farewell party during this Friday evening’s Gallery Cruise. The shop, SAW — an acronym for Starving Artists Works — is slated to close April 8 and may reopen in another location, said its proprietor, Heather Brynn, a local artist who also works full time as a realtor. Brynn has been running SAW for about a year, with help from her son and daughter, Colin and Kelly Brynn, as well as shop cofounders Maggie Smith and Sophia Stendahl. The shop featured an array of work by an allisland roster of 52 artists. Currently, however, the store’s one-year lease has not been renewed by its landlord and next-door neighbor, The Hardware Store Restaurant. The eatery’s owner, Melinda Sontgerath, said that she had intentionally only offered SAW a oneyear lease because she had other plans for the space. Sontgerath said that she is not quite ready to reveal those plans, but she will be soon.

and gardening issues in the Northwest. Noting previous issues with the Village Green, she said that several Vashon Island Growers Association board members and vendors will be stepping up and maintaining the Village Green this year. In preparation for the season, several people recently participated in a large work party there, and Guevin singled out Ron Irvine of the Vashon Winery and Craig Harmeling, who makes and sells picnic tables, with providing considerable help cleaning the shelter. “It looks so brilliant and bright now, she said.

“It’s a concept that has been in the works for a long time, she hinted. “It is food and beverage related, and it will complement what we do at the restaurant. She added that she expects her new venture to open in May or June. Sontgerath said she had been working with Brynn to help find a new location for SAW. But Brynn said she hasn’t seen any spaces that were quite right, though she will continue her search. “It’s disappointing there is nowhere uptown to move right now, she said. The shop has been an outlet for such well-known island figures as photographer Ray Pforter, woodworkers Curt Minier and Richard Beck, jeweler and garden artist Steve Zartman, painter Ilse Reimnitz and multimedia artists Mary Margaret Briggs and Charlotte Masi. The small shop was filled with examples of Vashon’s eclectic artistic output — hand-made goods and gifts that included leather earrings, gourd art, hanging terrariums, watercolors, wooden bowls, handbags, silk scarves, beeswax candles, mirrors and more. Brynn urged islanders to stop by the shop one last time on First Friday and through the weekend. “I hope people come in if they’ve had their eye on something, she said. “I’m not sure where people will be able to find those things after we close.

Sportsmen donate in soldier’s honor The Vashon Sportsmen’s Club recently made a donation to the Vashon Grappler Society in honor of Robert Bennedsen, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 while serving as a lieutenant in the Army. The donation, $1,019, will go toward the Grapplers’ scholarship fund and help send wrestlers to camp who otherwise might not have been able to go, according to Lauren Chin, a member of the Sportsmen’s Club who has been active with the club’s Bennedsen fund since it began. Bennedsen, who graduated from Vashon High School in 2004, was an athlete with a special affinity for wrestling. His parents, Tracy and Scott Bennedsen, who now live in Hawaii, donate to this fund every year in his honor. Reached recently, Tracy said she was pleased to learn of this donation and that her only son is being remembered on the island. “I am so happy that peo-

Before Bennedsen was killed, he had asked his parents if Vashon might send the men and women in his unit care packages because he noticed many troops did not receive support from home. Vashon was in the midst of responding to that request when Bennedsen was killed by an improvised explosive device. Over the course of the next year and half, the Sportsmen continued to send items to those in his unit, eventually sending 140 boxes totaling nearly 2,000 pounds. The Sportsmen sent the last box in October of 2011,

Chin said. They kept the fund open until recently in case another islander serving in the military might need Vashon’s support. They recently decided to close the fund and elected to donate the money to a scholarship fund in Bennedsen’s name. Lisa Devereaux, the secretary of the Grappler Society, said she, too, is pleased about the donation. “It’s wonderful. It was great they did all that for his (unit) for so long ... and that the remainder of the money will go to something he cared so much about. He loved wrestling. — Susan Riemer

Vashon has two scholarship funds in honor of Robert Bennedsen. To donate, send a check, earmarked accordingly, to the Vashon Grappler Society at P.O. Box 164 or the Vashon Community Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 1413.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if children no longer had cavities and grew up with whole, healthy white teeth? Wouldn’t it be great if adults didn’t get new cavities or decay around existing fillings and crowns? This is our goal for our patients and their families Let’s first define the difference between dental caries and cavities. Dental caries is an infection, and cavities are the end result of the damage caused by the disease. An acid attack on the teeth occurs every time you eat something. The body counterattacks by rinsing away and neutralizing the food and acid with saliva. Saliva contains calcium and phosphate, minerals capable of rebuilding enamel that has been attacked, acting like tooth decay in reverse. In some cases, a balance is created. However, with a sustained accumulation of dental plaque, or a diet high in certain sugars, the balance swings towards tooth decay. The best way to manage our dental health is to prevent caries with good home care and routine professional dental care. New products such as Novamin and Recaldent deliver in a concentrated form the same minerals, calcium and phosphate, that occur naturally in saliva. When saliva is overwhelmed by diet or health issues, these ingredients can help to repair and rebuild enamel by binding to the tooth surfaces and maintaining a state of super saturation. In combination with fluoride, especially in a sticky form like varnish (which doesn’t easily wash away), these products prevent and reverse decay at a very early stage. How these products are used is dictated by the amount of damage already done to the teeth. If your interest in this subject has been stimulated by this article, be sure to ask your dentist or hygienist for more details. Future articles will discuss cavity prevention and minimally invasive dentistry.

Water district is moving quietly forward

School district thoughtful as it looks to the future

Government at all levels is subject to widespread public criticism. At the risk of hearing from some of those critics, I want to pay tribute to Water District 19, a branch of local government that is performing its mission on budget. Thanks to some great effort by General Manager Jeff Lakin and the staff of the district, we’re seeing great progress where we saw imminent crises just a few short years ago. To revisit what I’ve said in these pages before, the district was forced to institute a moratorium on issuing new water service units more than 15 years ago, when it was realized that the volume of water to which we had legal rights was insufficient to permit any expansion of customers. Creek flow data revealed that the summer creek flows were significantly lower than our water rights allowed us to withdraw instantaneously. In addition, the well-field had proven that after drilling three wells, the maximum sustainable capacity was far below the amount our water rights would allow. As a result, we had to keep dozens of people on a waiting list unless we could increase our supply of water or decrease our current usage sufficiently to allow them to be connected to our system. There’s virtually no way we could have made progress in these directions by fully pleasing all people on both sides of the water resources debate. People who think the addition of any new customers is problematic are no doubt unhappy with the modest growth we’ve achieved. At the same time, those who believe property rights include the right to most any kind of development no doubt think

In the past week, the Vashon School District announced two changes that will profoundly affect the schools and will particularly impact Vashon High School. On Thursday, Superintendent Michael Soltman announced that the high school will change to a new class schedule next year, dropping the trimester system, which has been in place for a dozen years, to implement semesters. A few days later, Soltman made public the district’s choice for the next principal of VHS: a young administrator who currently heads up an alternative school in Edmonds. Vashon’s school district has long prided itself in offering a quality educational program, one that draws dozens of students from off-island and in recent years has garnered close to $500,000 in annual support from the community. Recently the district embarked on a strategic planning process to renew its goals and discuss how it can even better serve students. Though the process has at times seemed bogged down in jargon, so far some clear goals have been stated: To give students skills they need to enter an increasingly technological world; to build stronger communication between parents, teachers and administrators, and to better serve each individual student’s needs. As far as we can tell, recent decisions concerning the future of Vashon High School were made thoughtfully, with wide input and with these important goals in mind. We’ve yet to meet Danny Rock, the candidate chosen for principal of VHS, but we know a large search committee supported his hiring. We think it’s significant that Rock’s background is largely in alternative education. If the school district aims to provide all students an education for the future, it should work to reach those who struggle as equally as it does high achievers, something Rock seems to have accomplished in Edmonds. We hope he brings creative thinking and fresh ideas to Vashon. And while some Vashon high schoolers are upset about the district’s decision to do away with trimesters, we believe that decision, too, was made after much research by many people and with students’ best interests in mind. Gaps in core classes created by the trimester schedule were clearly troublesome, and taking classes such as math or a foreign language for an entire school year, rather than two-thirds of it, simply makes sense. Perhaps that’s why nearly all top-performing high schools are on semesters. While the schedule may limit some students’ elective options, a study showed that many students currently repeat electives not meant to be taken twice. Choosing can be a good thing, and the schedule will allow for more advanced placement offerings, a bonus for those headed to college. We applaud the school district for tackling two major decisions that could have been made behind closed doors and instead seeking the help of large advisory committees and giving students, parents and district staff the chance to weigh in as well. With continued transparency and thoughtfulness, the district may be well on its way to achieving the next level of excellence it is aiming for in developing its new strategic plan.

WATER TALK By STEVE HAWORTH we’ve moved much too slowly. What we have done is moved quietly forward in very positive directions since those bleak days to try to modestly expand our capacity, shrink our demand through conservation and help some of our neighbors on the waiting list get water. To lower demand, we’ve offered rebates on water-saving appliances and we’ve steepened the rates at the high end to discourage profligate peak summer usage. To carefully increase supply, we’ve opened a new Beall well and we’ve moved some of our non-usable well-field rights to another proven well on Morgan Hill. Altogether, we’ve added some 75 new customers — customers waiting for more than 15 years for water — without straining our precious water resource. In fact, we’re actually supplying more customers while using less water than we did years ago. And, thanks to the continuing hard work of the staff and the budget-consciousness of the management, we’ve managed to do these things while maintaining a budget surplus. As of 2006, perennial budget deficits had shrunk financial reserves to a dangerous level. Several years of tight fiscal management have resulted in a large increase of our financial reserves and facilitated the drilling of the Beall well without borrow-

ing a penny. In fact, we’ve dramatically lowered the district’s debt. We have also been able to embark upon a long-overdue preventive maintenance program to replace worn and dated water mains before they burst, instead of borrowing emergency funds after they do. We’ve also invested in $170,000 worth of pressure relief valves to alleviate a high-pressure zone that has plagued customers at the low end of the water system for decades — again, without placing the district further in debt. None of these efforts are intended to produce Bainbridge-type growth, but have allowed us to have the breathing room necessary to both meet our historic peak demand (which we could not do when I took office) and add a meaningful number of new service units from off the waiting list for folks who’ve been patiently waiting. Our aim has not been to pursue a no-growth approach nor growth at all costs, but instead to pursue a balanced approach. We have wanted to sustain our treasured water resources into the far-distant future, keep our costs restrained and help a few neighbors who have, in good faith, been sitting on the waiting list for years. It’s not magic. It’s quiet, dedicated hard work by some wellmeaning folks at your water district. If you see a Water District 19 truck around a hole in the ground or run into someone reading your meter in the blackberry patch, or if you should be stopping in the district office any time soon, you might just say, “Thanks.

I have heard that this sort of pulsing light can trigger seizures in those who live with epilepsy. Editor’s departure

5IBOLT UP #SPXO GPS IFS TFSWJDF The departure of “our editor, Leslie Brown, is a loss to Vashon-Maury Islands. In her, we had been gifted with a star journalist for seven years. Leslie raised the bar for anyone who is to follow. She has been not only a chronicler of life on this island in all its dimensions, she has been the island’s conscience, holding a mirror for us to see all our glory, our wrinkles and our zits, our quirkiness and our independence as a community. We are a community of communities, and Leslie illustrated that regularly as well. Her brand of journalism founded on thorough research, clarity of language, intelligent insight and integrity is hard to find anywhere, much less in the wetlands of small-town newspapers. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have her, the awards she garnered for our tiny newspaper and the recognition she’s brought to our islands. We are also fortunate in her leadership and the legacy she leaves behind because the staff that remains has embraced Leslie Brown’s standards, and we can hope they’ll both stay and carry on in her footsteps. Thank you, Leslie! — Susan McCabe

For scouts, last year was one for the record books By STEVE KICINSKI For The Beachcomber

This past year was an historic one for the 88-year-old Vashon Boy Scout Troop 294. As a national organization, the Boy Scouts celebrated the 100th anniversary of Eagle Scouts. As a troop, we celebrated the promotion of nine Eagle Scouts in one year, eclipsing our previous record of five Eagle Scouts, achieved in the years 1989, 2007 and 2009. Troop 294’s Eagle Scout program began in the late 1960s, with the encouragement of Scoutmaster Ralph Kirschner. Our first Eagle Scout was David Douglas, who was awarded his Eagle rank in 1970. Since then, the troop has promoted 81 members to the Eagle rank. This past year was special for a couple other reasons. We celebrated our first “Eagles of Eagles, meaning that Eagle Scouts from our troop have sons who became Eagle Scouts in 2012. Roger Douglas, our troop’s second Eagle Scout in 1972, celebrated his son Thomas’ Eagle achievement. Robert Douglas, our troop’s third Eagle Scout, celebrated his son Jefferson’s Eagle achievement. Thomas and Jefferson are cousins. We had another special occurrence this year: We celebrated our troop’s second Eagle Scout from an overseas troop. Brett Featherstone, who currently lives in Indonesia with his parents, moved here for just a few years and hustled through his scouting achievements to become our troop’s 80th Eagle. His brother Kevin achieved his Eagle rank in

TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND Islanders plan a gathering to pay homage to Bob Woodman Island musicians will gather at Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie on Friday, April 12, as a tribute to Bob Woodman, the founder of a legendary Vashon band called The Garage Boys. The evening of music will start at 7:30 p.m. Woodman, a handyman, auto mechanic, songwriter and accomplished mandolin and fiddler player, died of heart disease on March 17 at age 88 in his Port Orchard home. Woodman lived on Vashon for many years prior to his move to Port Orchard, and for decades, The Garage Boys were a familiar presence at island gatherings. The group played on Saturday nights in Woodman’s garage — hence the band’s name. Anyone was welcome to join the jam sessions, and many people came to sit in or listen. The event is being organized by Peter Larson and Chuck Roehm, island musicians who played with the band along with other core members Shelly Frankel and Russ Nelson. The musical tribute, Roehm said, is a chance to bid farewell to Woodman, who stipulated in his last wishes that he did not want a memorial service. “Bob gave us so much over so many years that we thought it was only appropriate to say goodbye in the best way he would relate to — a good, old-time country music jam, he said. Roehm and Larsen visited Woodman in his Port Orchard home many times in recent years. Roehm related that their friend had reacted with home-spun humor to his advanced age and health problems. “He told me, ‘It’s getting time to go, because the pump is failing. I can’t find any spare parts, and nobody will tell me what the warranty is,’ Roehm recalled. During the event on Sunday, Roehm, Larsen and others

Kids come out for Vashon’s Easter fest Hundreds of energetic children and their parents flooded into Ober Park on Saturday for the Spring Fling, an event put on each year the day before Easter by the Vashon Island Merchants and the Chamber of Commerce. Kids ran around in three racelike egg hunts, with one lucky winner in each taking home a basket full of goodies. When eggs weren’t being hunted, they participated in activities put on by island merchants, took photos with the Easter bunny or simply enjoyed playing in the sun.

VHS football coach to step down

Pirates run and jump to wins on the track

By MARY KAY RAUMA

For The Beachcomber

After six years as head football coach at Vashon High School, Clay Eastly is stepping down. His announcement, made last week, ends another chapter of an association Eastly has had with island football that spans decades: first as a player in the early 1980’s, then as an assistant coach at VHS, a youth football coach, McMurray head coach and the past years heading up the program at VHS. Although Eastly has said that his primary purpose in leaving the football program is to spend more time with his two children, he also has intentions to get back to his roots in working with children and help restart a youth football program on the island. “The key to being successful at the high school level is the continuity that comes up through a youth feeder program, Eastly said. “And there is the fact that my son really wants to play football, he added with a grin. Eastly’s son is a second grader at Chautauqua Elementary School and, if all goes as intended, Eastly, who also owns a residential painting company, hopes the island will field a third and fourth grade team as early as next year. During his tenure as head coach of VHS, Eastly was awarded Nisqually League Coach of the Year and All-Area Coach of the Year in 2008. He coached three VHS teams to the state playoffs (2008, 2009 and 2010) and guided many athletes to success both on the field and in the classroom. Pirate football players have garnered dozens of allleague awards, including Nisqually League Player of the year, All State Team, and Distinguished Scholarship in Academic Achievement. Some of those players, many whom Eastly coached from the sixth grade on, include Andy Didrickson, Hamzah Griffin, Kyle Bakker, Kyle York, Timmy Jovanovich, Adrian Arceo, Nathan Betz and Nick Fox-Edele.

The Pirate track and field team hosted a meet last Thursday, with the action taking place at Charles Wright Academy because Vashon’s track doesn’t meet the standards to host an official meet. The other participating schools were Bellevue Christian, Chimacum and Charles Wright. The Pirate tracksters had several outstanding performances that led to a few first-place finishes that day. Garrett Starr, a junior who competed in his first-ever track meet, took first in both the long jump and triple jump events. His long jump of 19 feet, 5 inches, was the seventh longest leap by 1A track competitors so far this season. Starr also leapt 38 feet, 1 inch, in the triple jump and also placed second in the 100 meter race in 12.2. Freshman Annika Hille helped the girls team with a first-place win in the 100 meters in 13.45. She also won the long jump event with a leap of 15 feet, 2 inches. 'JMF 1IPUP

Clay Eastly focuses during a 2010 Pirate football game. Eastly drew other coaching talent to the program and credits his mentor, Paul Walroff, as a key contributor to his coaching success. When asked to reflect about guiding many young athletes both on and off the field, Eastly counts himself as the luckiest of all. “Watching boys mature into men who understand how to deal with adversity has given me so much, he said. The coaching position was posted by the school district, and VHS athletic director Stephanie Spencer will guide the selection process for hiring a new coach, a position she hopes to have filled by the end of April. The process, she admitted, will be a tough one. Eastly has left big shoes to fill. — Mary Kay Rauma is an island writer and the mother of a former Pirate football player.

Baseball team finds victory on the road By RITA ALLMAN For The Beachcomber

In a busy week of games, the Pirates baseball team took their first home loss but followed with two wins on the road. Riding a two-game winning streak, Vashon entertained the Eatonville Cruisers on Monday, March 25, at Jim Martin Field. The outcome of the game was determined early, as the visitors jumped on Pirate pitching for five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Josh Myer started the game and pitched into the fourth inning, when he was relieved by Sam Schoenberg, who finished the affair. The pitching duo gave up 12 hits, three of which were home runs. Only six of the 15 runs given up were earned due to the Pirates’ six errors.

Duncan Ende drives toward the net while Winter Krimmert looks on in a recent game against Kennedy Catholic.

The Vashon High School boys soccer team added two more wins to their season last week, taking victories in two of three matches they played. The boys handily won, 5-2, at Chimacum and squeaked by against Eatonville, 2-1, at home. But they ended their winning steak with a home loss to Charles Wright. Against Eatonville, the Pirates seemed unable to score until the last 10 minutes when, with a changeup of players, senior Sean O’Neil was taken down in the box by the opponent on a slide tackle and scored on a penalty kick. With a tied score and two minutes remaining, defender Matt Swope got behind the ball and fed it to Peter Amick, who brought it into the net for the win. The JV team was also victorious against Eatonville, wining 4-2. Forward Gabe Reoux succeeded in three goals, and Rodolfo

Flores also found the net that match. Under coach Sergi Serebryakov, the boys are continuing to improve skills and find team chemistry as they move on the pitch. Last weeks challenging loss at home was against Charles Wright, 4-1. Despite several Pirate players sitting out due to injuries, the team continued to challenge the Tarriers but just couldn’t find the net. Junior Peter Amick assisted by George Silagi landed the Pirates’ lone goal. This week the Pirates, with a record of three wins and four losses, took on Bellevue Christian on Tuesday after press deadline. They’ll play Bellevue again tomorrow at home. Lacrosse team finds its stride By CATE STACKHOUSE For The Beachcomber

Halfway through the Vashon Vultures lacrosse season, the high school players are improving as a team, proving to be a formidable opponent and moving toward their goal of making the state playoffs. On Tuesday, March 26, Vashon played a close game with Kennedy Catholic High School, but lost, 9-8, in overtime. It was a thrilling fourth quarter for all who attended. Vashon scored four goals in the last three minutes of the game to tie the score at 8-8, sending the game into overtime. In the last minutes of overtime, however, Kennedy Catholic scored their ninth goal to end the game. Last Thursday, Vashon played Nathan Hale High School, the number-one team in the league. Vashon lost 11-1 to Nathan Hale in their first game of the season, but Thursday’s game was an entirely different story. It was a team effort offensively for Vashon as six different players (Ben Reoux, Sam Schoenberg, Lacina, Kelly Sullivan, Ryan Bernheisel and Clyde Pruett) had hits, all singles. The Pirates made the most of their timely hits, turning them into five runs. The team also tightened up the defense from the previous game, committing only two errors. Line score: Vashon 5 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors, Charles Wright 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 error. Vashon was on the road again on Friday as they played the always tough Cowboys of Chimacum. The game turned out to be a great pitching duel. The Cowboys opened the scoring with a run in the first, and the Pirates responded with a run in the second. The score stayed

ter. In the end the Vultures lost by just one point, with a final score of 11-10. This shows how the Vultures are a determined team that can do extremely well when they put their minds to it. This year’s Vultures team is much different than last year’s. The Vultures are now coached by island lacrosse player Dan Macca and because a large number of seniors graduated last year, the team is smaller, with only three freshmen joining. The small size allows more attention to be given to all players, rather than just the starters. The team also has an assistant coach, Danny Salonen, a Vashon High School alumni and graduate of the University of Washington. Sophomore Ezra Ende, unable to play because of an injury, is a student coach. The Vultures have a home game against Overlake High School at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. — Cate Stackhouse is a team manager for the Vashon Vultures.

tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth, when Vashon added a final run to win the nailbiter, 2-1. For the second game in a row, a Pirate pitcher came through in a big way. This time it was Kelly Sullivan, who pitched a complete gem, allowing only four hits and a single run. He also struck out eight batters. Josh Myer led the way offensively for Vashon, going three for three on the day with three singles and an RBI. Ezra Lacina chipped in with a double, and Clyde Pruett, Colton Alberthal, Ryan Bernheisel and Sullivan all added singles. The Pirate defense was strong once again, committing only one error. Line score: Vashon 2 runs, 8 hits, 1 error, Chimacum 1 run, 4 hits, 2 errors. Vashon improved its league record to 4-3 and overall record to 4-4. Next week, the Pirates play Bellevue Christian twice (away and at home) before spring break, when they will travel to Chelan to play a double header against Chelan High School. — Rita Allman does team and web support for the Pirates.

HARBOR CONTINUED FROM 1

and a handful of derelict and deteriorating structures. The state has received complaints from boaters and waterfront residents concerned about the state of the harbor, an important habitat for spawning forage fish and wintering birds. And from time to time, a boat has broken loose from its mooring or sunk. The state, in turn, has historically not enforced licensing regulations in Quartermaster, leading to a laissez-faire attitude among boaters. When DNR began its planning a couple years ago, only a handful of the buoys in the harbor were properly licensed. Last December, after several public meetings to reach out to Vashon’s boating community and gather feedback about the coming changes, Randlette and other DNR officials visited the island to present a draft of the agency’s plan along with a tentative map of where boats would be allowed to moor in the harbor. While some at the meeting commended the officials on their efforts to restore the harbor, others expressed concerns about restrictions the plan would place on those who

moored boats there. Many said they thought the 73 evenly-spaced buoy spots the state designated in Burton and Dockton would fill up quickly, not allowing for future growth in the harbor. In its final plan, the state included additional buoy spots in Burton and Dockton and added a new, 16-boat buoy field at the mouth of Judd Creek for a total of 126 buoy spots in the harbor, leaving some areas clear for navigation. Waterfront homeowners will also be allowed to drop buoys in front of their properties. Randlette said planners were conservative in their original buoy mapping but decided there would be no harm in adding the additional spots that islanders called for. The agency will now apply for the buoy permits through King County, the state Department of Fish & Wildlife and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers — streamlining the complicated application process for islanders. Officials are unsure if all 126 buoy locations will be approved, but they’re hopeful that most of them will be permitted. “At the end of the day, I think that will serve everybody, Randlette said. Many Vashon boaters have also expressed concern about the costs associated with installing the new anchor systems to be required by the state. State officials say the helical-style anchors are superior because they attach to

the sea floor, have mid-line floats and don’t drag and scour the bottom like many traditional anchors. They also have shorter lines, allowing boats to moor closer together without risk of running into one another. Installation of helical anchors, however, can run between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on the size of the boat. Randlette said DNR understood islanders’ financial concerns and responded by adding some flexibility in the final plan. If a boater can purchase or create an anchor system that, like the helical anchor, doesn’t drag the sea floor and has a short line, the agency will consider approving it, she said. “The preferred anchor method is the embedded helical anchor, but if people can come up with something that from a performance perspective will be comparable, we’re open to innovation in that regard, Randlette said. Once DNR receives final approvals for the buoys, it will begin issuing buoy licenses to boaters as well as removing the 40-some buoys in Quartermaster that have been identified as abandoned and potentially hazardous to other boats as well as the environment. If funding can be secured, the state will also remove a large, deteriorating net pen that has been illegally moored in Dockton for years as well as a sunken boat beneath the net pen and about 30 creosote pilings in the harbor at Dockton. Last year the state removed two abandoned boats and one sunken vessel in Quartermaster. “We’re excited about that. I think boaters will get an immediate benefit from having derelict buoys and pilings gone, Randlette said. Nearly 80 Vashon boaters have already applied to place buoys in one of the designated buoy fields or in front of their homes. Randlette said that once DNR secures its final permits, which it hopes will happen this fall, it will likely give boaters a grace period of about six months to purchase new anchor systems and, with DNR’s help, place their buoys in the allotted spots. “There are going to be some costs to putting in these sturdier, more environmentally friendly anchor systems, but at the end of the day what we’re trying to do is ensure some long-term equitability and protection of the harbor, Randlette said. As it has worked on the draft the buoy plan, the state has also reached out to local groups with aging and environmentally harmful docks and worked with them on their own restoration projects. In the past couple years, the Quartermaster Marina has installed an entirely new dock system that meets new state environmental standards, and the Quartermaster Yacht Club recently announced its plans for a $2 million project to do the same. King County Parks, which owns the marina at Dockton, has also said it will replace its docks over time to meet the new standards. The state’s efforts have garnered praise from some local environmentalists. Amy Carey, director of Preserve Our Islands, said harmful anchors and other debris have for years been damaging the bottom of Quartermaster, habitat that is important for forage fish and spawning salmon.

The health of Vashon’s harbor has even wider implications in Puget Sound — Quartermaster has been identified as integral to a federal salmon recovery plan. “It’s a very critical body of water in ecology. DNR is not going in there on a feelgood exercise, Carey said. Preserve Our Islands was at the forefront in the fight to see the Maury Island Aquatic Reserve — which includes the entire harbor, the southeastern shoreline of Maury Island and the southern tip of Vashon — re-designated several years ago. Carey said she’s now glad to see the state’s efforts to protect and preserve the harbor. “DNR has a big focus right now on their part of Puget Sound recovery and restoration, and this buoy plan is a classic indication of that, Carey said.

can take place outside of the classroom, Rock said in an interview. “It’s made me understand the different pathways students have to earning a diploma. The decision to come to Vashon High School was both a professional and personal one, he said. Rock, who has a master’s degree in education and a principal certification from the University of Washington, has felt ready to move on in his career. And with two young children, he and his wife were ready to settle down somewhere they could raise their kids. Vashon, a place they have family and have visited often, seemed ideal. “It had to be a good fit for our family, and it had to be a good fit for me in the role of principal, and Vashon has both of those things. Before taking the helm at Edmonds Heights, Rock taught for six years at Roosevelt High School in Seattle. Rock called his time at Roosevelt both busy and fulfilling. In addition to teaching history, humanities and psychology, he coached soccer and was the senior class advisor. He helped start the school’s ninthgrade academy — a program where ninthgraders shared a block schedule of classes — and led a team of teachers involved in it. Rock also helped start an exchange program while at Roosevelt. Called Hands for a Bridge, the program, in collaboration with other organizations, still sends Roosevelt students to South Africa and Northern Ireland.

Rock is no stranger to Vashon. His wife, Taj Rock, grew up on Vashon, and her parents still live here — Zoe Cheroke runs a popular preschool, The Barbie School, and Geo Cheroke teaches science at McMurray Middle School. Rock said his family, which is active and loves the outdoors, is fond of Vashon and visits the island about once a month. They’ll soon be looking for a home on Vashon, with hopes of moving permanently to the island by June. “We’re really looking forward to participating in life on Vashon, he said. Soltman selected Rock from among three final candidates. Also chosen as semi-finalists for the position were Stephanie Spencer, the current assistant principal at VHS, and Chris Bede, associate principal at Eastlake High School in Sammamish. The three candidates met the public and answered questions at a forum at the high school last Thursday. Soltman said that as the school district moved forward in its current strategic planning process, two of its goals were to better serve each individual student’s needs and to build stronger relationships with parents — two strengths Rock has exhibited in his current position. “With the strategic planning in place and the new building coming on, I was looking for someone who could help us see ourselves and see our strengths and our challenges and have perspective from the outside, Soltman said. “I think we’ll learn some things from Danny’s leadership. and it will be exciting for us.

Madeleine Nelson-Sherry

GEOFF JOHNS

Our Beloved Geoff Johns, after a valiant struggle with cancer, passed into the Light this last Wednesday, March 20th, on the Spring Equinox. His Spirit is now free and playing the music of the Spheres. He died as he lived, with courage, beauty, integrity, ceremony and song. He went out on a wave of Love. The infectious joy of his life and his music moved so many, seeding empowered self-expression everywhere he went. His Light and his Legacy live on. We will be having a memorial to celebrate his life on Sunday, April 21st at the Vashon Maury Grange Hall, starting @ 4pm and continuing into the evening. Please bring a potluck dish to share. There will be music, memories and more. Emails can be sent to teamgeoff@rhythmjoy.com. Donations are accepted @ the PSCCU credit union under Team Geoff.

Madeleine Nelson-Sherry, long time Vashon resident, passed from this world on March 27, 2013 surrounded by her children. Madeleine will be remembered for her years as a beautician on Vashon and involvement in community activities. She was born in Edmonds, Washington on February 13th, 1922 and spent most of her childhood years in Anchorage, Alaska. She returned to Seattle with her Mother, brother and sister at the age of 17. After graduating from Roosevelt High School she opened a dress shop. Later finishing beauty school, she opened a beauty shop with her Mother in the University District. Maddy later moved to Vashon where she opened a beauty shop of her own. It was there that she met the love of her life, Arne Nelson. They married and raised their family on a small farm near Burton. After losing Arne, she sold the family home and eventually moved to Factoria with her friend and new husband Bernard Sherry. When Bernie passed, she moved to Bothell where she was very active in the Northshore Senior Center. immigrated to the United States from Argentina as a child, and entered first grade with no English — an experience she said informs her eagerness to help other Spanish-speaking kids get a head start in their education. Sally Adam, who helps coordinate Comunidad Latina’s meetings through her work as the family advocate for Vashon’s school district, agreed with Tress about the importance of the issue. “Preschool has made a critical difference for (Spanish-speaking) students coming in to Vashon schools, Adam said. “It’s huge. We see it trickling down through all the years of school — there is more self-confi-

dence and ability in school because of that preschool experience. Raising funds for preschool education is only one of the aims of Comunidad Latina, a group that officially formed about a year ago and now holds meetings, in Spanish, on a twice monthly basis. The group now includes about 30 families, said Tress. One of the organization’s first official moves was to organize a parade of its members during the 2012 Strawberry Festival, and since that time, group members have also put together presentations about Latino holidays, including El Dia de los Muertos, for local schools. According to Adam, the mission of Comunidad Latina is broad. “We want to be a really positive presence in our whole community and reach out as neighbors, she said. “We’re here, and we

want to contribute something positive. The Latino population on Vashon has grown significantly in recent years. According to census records, the number of Latino islanders grew about 67 percent from 2000-2010, from 259 to 434. Tress said she believes the number has continued to climb in recent years. “I know that the Latino community here is very diverse in terms of their backgrounds and origin, and also in terms of their immigration journey, she said. “There are also many second generation Latinos here. Donna Donnelly, assistant to the superintendent of the school district, confirmed that participation in English Language Learners (ELL) classes offered by the district has also spiked in recent years, from about 20 students in 2007 to 36 students currently. From 2000 to now, the number

of students who identify as Hispanic have more than doubled, from 54 to 133. In a twist, as Comunidad raises funds for Latino children to attend English-language preschool, more than three dozen families have opted to send their non-Latino children to a new Spanish language immersion kindergarten program at Chautauqua Elementary school. Victoria Clayton, a native Spanish speaker who teaches both morning and afternoon classes of the immersion class, said that last year there was a waiting list for the new program. Only 6 of the 40 students in her class are native Spanish-speakers, she said. But the English-speaking students in the program are quickly learning to speak Spanish. “At this age, it is very easy for them, she said.

Call 389-1085 t DBUT!WJQQ PSH J.J. takes a little longer than Batman to warm up to his human friends, but when he does this little guy is a snuggly love bug! Sweet and non-aggressive, J.J. is a wonderful little fellow! J.J. and Batman (both about 5-6 years old) absolutely adore each other and would LOVE to go to a home where they can be together forever and ever! Both cats get along with nice dogs and children but would prefer to be the only cats. J.J. is fine with others but Batman can be a bit of a bully when it comes to other kitty counterparts! Buckle your seat belts, and get ready to meet the “Dynamic Duo! These two not only complete each other, they also compliment each other’s personalities, giving their human companions a chance to enjoy the best of both worlds! “Batman is a friendly feisty guy! Full of spunk, he loves attention and isn’t afraid to ask for it‚– he also has the cutest kinked half tail that only makes him more endearing. There is a special adoption fee if you adopt both cats.

Piper, a 2-1/2-year-old yellow lab/shepherd mix, is as lovely as her name. She is a sweet, playful girl and loves to go on walks, especially along the beach where she can swim. Piper comes from a family with older children and cats and lots of toys. Being very smart, curious and independent, she would benefit from some additional training. Piper has many other pluses, including being crate and invisible fence trained. She is seeking a family that will continue to provide her with love, tummy rubs and lots of activity.
