Islander traveled the yellow brick road ‘Wizard of Oz’ extra friends with Judy Garland, Vivian Leigh, Mickey Rooney By Linda Ball lball@mi-reporter.com
It was the golden age of cinema when the musical fantasy, “The Wizard of Oz,” starring the great Judy Garland, was filmed in 1939. Islander Meredythe Glass not only remembers that time — she was in the movie, cast as one of the many townspeople of the Emerald City, an ‘extra’ in the

vernacular of film. The recent death of Karl Slover, one of the last surviving actors who played a munchkin in the film, led the Reporter — via a tip from a friend — to Glass, who lives at Covenant Shores. Glass doesn’t think her part in the movie is any big deal, but it is, considering that the movie is still Meredythe much loved and Glass cherished. “The Wizard

of Oz” had all the elements of a great film. A young girl in distress, her loyal new friends helping her along her journey to get back home, a wicked witch for a villain and, of course, the frightening and realistic flying monkeys. “I was just an Emerald City townsperson,” Glass said of her role. “All the way through the movie, we were in and out [of scenes].” Glass’ involvement in the movie confirms the adage that having a friend or relative in ‘the business’ helps to get a foot in the door. Glass, who turns 91 on Dec. 4, got the part because her cousin, Mervyn LeRoy, was the film’s producer. LeRoy is credited for discovering Clark Gable, Loretta Young, Robert Mitchum and Lana Turner.

Kara Klotz, the media relations person for the Washington State Department of early learning, said the department has suspended Martin’s license, and the notice was handdelivered to Martin on Nov. 28. Martin was put on a no-referral status immediately after the inspection. Christofferson said the inspector with the department of early learning told
her that Martin’s license will be revoked. “From what I’ve seen and heard, there were several violations to license rules,” Klotz said. Martin does not have a prior criminal record. Klotz said individuals with a criminal background are not eligible for day care licensing. According to the police report, Martin called Traxler, crying over the inspection, and asked him to come over and help her. When Traxler arrived several hours later, he observed that she had been drinking, so he helped her to her bedroom to lie down.

Parents, students, cheerleaders, athletes and educators came out to show their solidarity for no further cuts to education on Nov. 28, the first day of the legislative special session. Martin wanted Traxler to call the parents of the children in her care to come and get them, and when he refused, she “went crazy,” the report said. She grabbed a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed her bed, the wall in her bedroom and herself on the hand and right leg. Traxler told the day care assistant, Chelsea Flood, to call 911. He started to leave and Martin came after him, hitting his truck several times with the knife, breaking the passenger side mirror and radio antennae. Realizing he’d left his cell phone in her house, Traxler went inside to get it with Martin chasing him and hitting him on the right side of the face, causing several lacerations to his cheek. Once Traxler retrieved his phone, he called 911. When police arrived, Martin first said Traxler had stabbed her, but she later stated it “was all me — he knows how to push my buttons. Just arrest me.” The police report said

Six Mercer Island teachers earn National Board Certification By Reporter Staff
Six teachers in the Mercer Island School District have earned their National Board Certification, the highest level of certification. The district now employs 45 teachers with National Board Certification. The teachers include Erica Hill, Susan Jobe, Aaron Noble, Danae Burger, Heather McLyman and Julie Hovind.
Only around 4 percent of the teachers in the United States earn the honor, which requires submitting a lengthy portfolio and various other exercises. The process can take up to three years to complete. “I am grateful to the Mercer Island Schools Foundation, which provides support to teachers in the form of National Board tuition reimbursement and reimbursement for the University of Washington program that offers support for National Board candidates,” said MISD Superintendent Gary Plano.

RADIO | FROM 1 be Mercer Island High School senior Ryan Rouillard. It is the topic for his senior culminating project. Rouillard will also broadcast the girls game on Dec. 2. The plan is to broadcast 25 or more games over the next few months, he said. A student in the high school’s radio class, Rouillard started to consider the idea of broadcasting basketball games last year. He has long kept the statistics for both varsity basketball teams, attending nearly all of their games. The radio class’s new teacher, Charlie Hilen, who also teaches video arts at the school, heard Rouillard’s idea and encouraged him to do live game broadcasts. The station, on the air since 1970, has made its way with volunteers, students, bartered equipment and donations. Leaving behind an Island tradition, the station dropped broadcasting high school games in 2002. Former
vocational ed teacher Nick DeVogel explained then that interest in broadcasting games had waned and they were too complex to manage from remote locations. Instead, the station went another way to bring in more listeners with online streaming and adding adult volunteers who were guest DJs to fill the 24 hours of the broadcasting day. A major focus was to bring in R&B music. “Our mission (now) is to promote rhythmic stations,” an adult volunteer said then. One guest DJ was suspended for some inappropriate remarks. By 2005, the struggle over whether the station could keep its spot on the radio dial, 104.5 FM, took an increasing amount of time and attention. Because the high school-run radio station is considered a “Class D” educational station under federal rules, KMIH faced giving up its frequency to a larger commercial station. In the summer of 2008, a deal was reached and the station remains on the air on a different frequency.
Wednesday, November 30, 2011 | Page 3 Recently, the station has become more involved with the city of Mercer Island and emergency planning coordination. Rouillard said that broadcasting the games requires a laptop, a sound board and a phone line to transmit the sound to the station back at the high school. Working out the logistics of the phone line is the crucial link that needs to be worked out at each school. It takes some doing. He is headed to Mt. Si High School next week to make sure their connections will work for the game there. All of the schools contacted are glad to participate except Liberty High School, which has yet to give a definitive answer. “They are worried about whether or not the coverage can be unbiased,” the student said.

Christofferson said Martin was “extraordinarily manipulative,” making each parent think their kid was the best kid and turning the parents against each other. “It’s so incredibly hurtful — she created this web of lies,” Christofferson said. Christofferson said she spoke to Martin on Nov. 28, and said Martin didn’t seem to have any remorse about what happened. Police commander Leslie Burns said this is the first time the department has been called to the home. “Several officers responded because of the original description of the call (weapon involved) and because it was an active day care.” A continuation of Martin’s arraignment was held on Nov. 29 after Reporter deadline, in the Mercer Island Municipal Court.

City news Council receives HR audit report A draft of the city’s human resources audit was presented to the City Council at a study session last week before the Council’s regular meeting on Nov. 21. The session was open to the public. The audit was authorized by the Council at its Oct. 2 meeting, not long after the settlement of the lawsuit brought by former employee Londi Lindell against the city. Lindell alleged, among other things, that she was discriminated against and harassed on the basis of her sex. Councilmember Bruce Bassett formally requested the audit. He then served as a liaison to the audit team. The Council set out to ensure that human resources procedures were in place that would prevent any future issues that might arise from either improper relationships or an atmosphere that any employee or citizen would find offensive or threatening. The Council directed the audit team to determine that:
1. Written personnel policies include all required provisions. 2. Management of HR activities is consistent with those policies and best practices. 3. Proper checks and balances are in place regarding HR decisions. The audit began with a review of the two versions of the city’s Employee Handbook, one from 2003 and the other from 2009. The audit team, lead by HR consultant Bob Roegner, who is a former mayor of Auburn, went through the existing HR policies and suggested ways that the policies could be made more precise. According to the Council packet, the audit recommendations were summarized as follows: “The Audit Team is recommending a handful of significant policy changes and a much larger number of less substantial changes that are more technical in nature than about policy, the report said. “As discussed in detail in the HR Draft Audit report, the more significant include dealing with nepotism, improper governmen-

tal action, anti-harrassment, the grievance process and employee discipline. The audit cost the city $9,000. Councilmember Mike Cero was unimpressed by the report, calling it a waste of money. “I did not think it was worth the money, especially in this tough economy, he said. “The issue is not that our policies are bad or outdated, he said. “The issue is that policies are not being followed, particularly with nepotism. He also felt that some changes, such as requiring four directors to weigh in on whether or not to fire or discipline an employee, were “too cumbersome. The consultant gave the city good marks. A cover letter from the consultant included with the report stated the following: “As a general comment, we believe that your personnel policies are on a par with and in many cases will exceed most other jurisdictions’ good business practices. We also believe this level of scrutiny is reflective of your efforts to provide fair and equitable treatment of your employees. They will

also provide you confidence regarding internal controls and checks and balances as you move forward. Final review of the audit and changes that will result must now pass legal review to be conducted by internal and outside counsel. On a related note, city employee Johnny Segle, the husband of HR director Kryss Segle, resigned from the city on Nov. 10. He has found another job. For the complete draft audit report, go to www. mercergov.org.
Performance review for city manager begun In an executive session held after the regular City Council meeting on Nov. 21, the Council held a performance review of Mercer Island City Manager Rich Conrad. Conducting an evaluation of Conrad’s performance was requested by Councilmembers because of the lawsuit between former city employee Londi Lindell and the city. According to city attorney Katie Knight, the first steps in the process of evaluating the city manager involve the mayor interviewing other city directors, key staff
and City Councilmembers. Councilmembers and Conrad also discussed his performance at the executive session on Nov. 21. Conrad submits his own written assessment as well. The mayor then summarizes the input from all parties in a memo. The memo is to be finalized before the end of the year. This process, with the mayor taking the lead, has been in place since at least 2004 or 2005, Knight said.
Chief: Emergency transport fee ordinance is working The Mercer Island City Council voted six months ago to implement a fee for Mercer Island firefighters to transport patients to area hospitals. The fee, ordinarily charged and collected by private ambulance services, is now charged by the city. An outside company under contract to the city now bills and collects the money. Island fire chief Chris Tubbs said that despite the number of transports and the revenue they generated being less than forecasted, the arrangement is working well. The transport fee is set at
$770. To date, the change has brought in $127,500. Details involved in billing the fees are still being ironed out, the chief said. The ordinance ensures that transport services by the city will never be determined by the ability to pay. The city will not pursue collection on unpaid fees. Fire personnel at the scene will assess each situation and have the final say as to whether or not enough personnel and equipment would remain on the Island if they take time to transport a patient off Island. Mercer Island firefighters and others did not support the ordinance, citing the fact that transporting patients off-Island, more often than before, could compromise the ability of the department to respond to emergencies here. Island firefighter union head, Ray Austin, said that firefighters remain concerned about the risk caused by having firefighting resources off the Island. “It is a great idea, he said, “but we are not staffed for it. The union, however, respects the decision by the Council. “They heard our concerns, he said. “They listened, then made their decision. We will follow our orders.

naïve or ill-informed. A strict liability statute does not allow law enforcement officials the discretion to take into account parents’ motivations, sincerity or their diligent historical efforts to prevent underage drinking in their home. This ordinance needs to be rewritten to sanction parents and property owners when they participate in and permit underage drinking, not when it occurs despite the adults’ best efforts to prevent it. Speed an emphasis for Islander boys By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
While they may still be tall, the Mercer Island boys basketball team doesn’t plan to be one-hit wonders this year. Size and speed will both factor into the team’s game plan this winter. “We play a lot faster than we did last year, said returning head coach Gavin Cree. “We are emphasizing pushing the ball ahead — we have a lot of good athletes who like to run the floor, so we’re going to play a little faster pace than we did last year. Mercer Island lost some key players to graduation last year, but because of injuries during the previous season, this year’s squad has had plenty of time on the court. “You always miss seniors. Some of the leaders that we had last year were really good. They were just great senior leaders. We’ve got new guys stepping into those roles, and I feel good about what we have. We have a lot of guys who have really worked hard on their game in the offseason; in particular, Sam Cohn, Brian Miller and Joe Rasmussen. Those are three guys coming back who’ve really worked hard. A number of other guys as well, said Cree. Cree said he hopes the team, thanks to their size, will be a dominating force on defense. “We’re big, so we’re going to be a great rebounding team. We have a lot of length. I told our guys that if we had a contest with all the other guys in the league just touching fingers, we’d win. So we have just a lot of size and a lot of length, which should lend itself to the defensive end — ‘should’ being the key word. We have to have the guts to do it, said Cree. A few players have been sidelined early on thanks to injuries sustained at the end of the football season. Cree said both Jeff Lindquist, a captain this year, and Parker Scott,
a senior, will miss the first several weeks due to injuries. “Both are expected to start practicing in the next couple of weeks. They are going to miss December for the most part, said the coach. Despite those players missing the beginning of the year, the rest of the team is focusing on getting the ball up court. “We’re really trying to emphasize kicking the ball up the court so we can run. Again we have a lot of athletes who are strong, and we are a deep team. We have plenty of guys to come in, so we shouldn’t be saving any of our energy. We’re really trying to run the floor. We’re trying to emphasize our sort of team culture that we have every year. We always reemphasize being together and supporting each other, said Cree. For senior captain Brian Miller, he’s seeing the guys work hard in practice. “It’s going well, said the forward. “We’re working on our transitions and getting up the floor. While the program’s goal — a state title — hasn’t changed from years past, they know it takes a little more than sheer talent to make it happen. “We want the banner, said senior Sam Cohn, who plays point guard. “We want KingCo, too, but to go all the way. It’s going to take dedication and hard work, and staying healthy. “Obviously, it’s difficult, but that’s the goal, said Cree. “We have the ability. It’s about getting lucky a little bit, stay-

I’m not going to say we have a better group, but it’s a different group this year. But as much ability to get there as before. The Islanders made their first state appearance last winter since 2008, traveling to Spokane for the regional round, playing two games before losing to Kamiakin. To get to that point again this year, the team will have to find its leaders and use all of their skills. “We have some guys who have done it, and that’s the one thing about our team. We lost guys, but those guys were out, so we have quite a few guys with a lot of experience, said the coach. The first game was against Eastlake, a tough start for the Islanders last year. The Wolves come to Mercer Island on Wednesday, Nov. 30, for the team’s first game

Sizably younger MIHS girls basketball returns with bigger, younger team By Megan Managan mmanagan@mi-reporter.com
In years past the Mercer Island girls basketball team has relied on speed more than size. The program was built around the team’s typically smaller players who had speed up and down the court. This season, head coach Jamie Prescott has to reconfigure to accommodate the program’s newest attribute: size. “We’ve never had a bigger team — we just have to figure out how to
use it because we’ve never had it, said the coach. This year the Islanders return with a younger group as well, after losing four seniors last winter. Led by Kris Brackmann, the team will focus on starting at the beginning. “We’re overall player for player younger, said Prescott. “We’re taller, so have lots of room in growth just in maturity. We graduated four seniors — they were pretty impactful seniors and three were starters, so we have a lot of young kids moving up who are new. Brackmann said with the younger team behind her, they’ve focused a lot on the basics and building the team. “We’re working on our
plays and defense, and the basics, said the captain. “We have to work on our defensive and conditioning so we’re better at the end of the game than our opponent. In a traditionally wellstacked conference, the Islanders will face tough competition, which they are preparing for early on. “I’m excited that we’re taking a trip down to Prairie, said Prescott. “They are always really good, so I think the teams we’re most excited to play are those teams just because they are phenomenal and are a good benchmark for us to see how we compete. Juanita is going to be really good. While the team has set up an overall philosophy for the year, Brackmann said she hopes they can make another showing at state like they did several years ago. Last season the team made it to the regional bracket before ending the season. “I think we can do well in our league, and I’d like to make another showing at state, said Brackmann. The team kicks things off with a non-conference game at Newport on Wednesday starting at 7:30 p.m. The girls then take a league trip to Mount Si this Friday evening, with the game starting at 6:30 p.m. The Islanders will take on Juanita on Friday, Jan. 6, at Juanita starting at 6:30 p.m.

Sports briefs New group of select soccer teams holding tryouts A new group of youth soccer teams is starting on Mercer Island. The Islander FC will be holding tryouts early in December. The teams, which include U8, U9, U10 boys and girls teams, will play other local select teams in a spring league. During the first tryouts, over 60 kids came with another weekend of tryouts planned for early December. This is the first premier league that does not require players to leave Mercer Island to participate. The teams train on Mercer Island and will play games at the Starfire complex in the spring. To learn more, visit www. islanderfc.com or email islanderfc@gmail.com.
According to coach Corey McGee, the gym had 45 people from four different CrossFit gyms come for the workout. Each person was asked to bring at least one bag of food to be donated to the Mercer Island Food Pantry. In total, the group collected 58 bags of food. Of course, those who showed also came to work out, and in teams of two they threw wall balls, bearcrawled and carried their partners for 30 minutes during the workout. “I guess working hard now will pay off on Thursday,” one of participants said. McGee said a big thanks to the Mercer Island CrossFit members, their families and Scott, and the StoneWay CrossFit crew who attended the event, as well as the Stroum JCC, where the Mercer Island CrossFit gym is located. To learn more about MI CrossFit, visit their website.

& Girls Club is hosting a positive sports workshop for parents and coaches the first weekend in December.
Partnering with the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), the MI Boys & Girls Club is hoping to help improve the sports experience for Mercer Island youth. “Kids take away valuable life lessons when we create positive, rewarding experiences in athletics,” said Becky Shaddle, the Boys & Girls Club athletics director. “This partnership and these workshops will help coaches and parents set the right goals and support the tremendously positive outcomes we strive to provide through youth sports.” The club encourages all parents who have children currently participating — or plan to — attend the 90-minute parents workshop. It will be held on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. at PEAK, located at
4120 86th Ave. S.E. All current and future club volunteer coaches will be required to attend a twohour workshop for coaches on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. The club will also be holding a separate session for its board of directors and individual leadership boards that work with the football and baseball programs. The PCA is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1998 at Stanford University to help youth and high school athletes have a positive youth sports experience. The trainer who will be leading the workshop is Jim Thompson, the founder and CEO of PCA. He was the director of the Public and Global Management Programs at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business for over 10 years and has taught numerous courses in leadership and nonprofit issues. To learn more and to register, contact Becky Shaddle at the Boys & Girls Club at 232-4548.

SPEED | FROM 9 of the season. The Islanders will take on Mount Si in their first league game this Friday at Mount Si. “Eastlake, our first one, was a really difficult game last year,” said Cree. The team is always excited for Bellevue, a cross lake rivalry, as Cree called it. Mercer Island lost to the Wolverines twice last winter, before winning during the KingCo tournament. “We’re really excited to play them,” said both Cohn and Miller.

OZ | FROM 1 “My mother’s side goes all the way back in the movie business,” Glass explained. She said LeRoy was selling newspapers in front of the Curran Theater in San Francisco and got to know all of the actors going in and out of the theater. One day an actor didn’t show up, so LeRoy got his break standing in for the missing actor. From there he did a little vaudeville, then went to Hollywood with another cousin, Jesse Laskey, a pioneer film maker, she said. LeRoy cast Glass in “The Wizard of Oz” after working his way up from camera assistant and writer. “We all just yelled, ‘here comes the wizard,’” Glass said of her single line. Glass later secured a small contract with MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) studio, appearing as an extra in several Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney films, including “Babes on Broadway,” “Strike up the Band,” and “Babes in Arms.” Glass also stood in for Vivian Leigh during the 1940s filming of “Waterloo Bridge,” Leigh’s first film after “Gone With the Wind.” Glass said Leigh was a very sweet woman whom she remained friends with for years. In this photo from the book, “Judy Garland, World’s Greatest Entertainer,” Glass is to the left of Garland, in the back, in the movie “Babes in Arms.” After the war, Leonard earned his Ph.D. and was the director of alcoholic rehabilitation in San Joaquin County. Glass lost contact with Garland not long after the war. She never knew Karl Slover, but remarked about Mickey Rooney, who is still alive. “He was fun, but kind of

San Diego. Her son, Dr. Lee Glass, lives here with his family. Today she volunteers at the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Thrift Store three days a week, a far cry from Hollywood. “I love working at the thrift shop, and I love the people I work with,” she said.
