One of Debbie Macomber’s newest books is for children.

Gregg Olsen’s ‘Envy’ is set in Port Gamble.

Sheila Roberts’ new book is timed for the season.

Joe Upton writes about fishing and fear in the Bering Sea.

Sonia Lien writes about healing in ‘‘From Alone to Aloha.’

Local authors produce gift-worthy works By SUZANNE DROPPERT libertybaybooks@embarqmail.com

Reading is a great pastime and books are a wonderful gift this time of year, especially with the wealth of authors who reside in Kitsap County. New books released from Kitsap authors this fall include a great novel, “Ed King, by David Guterson (author of “Snow Falling on Cedars).

Debbie Macomber has several books out this fall and winter, including the end to her Cedar Cover series with “1225 Christmas Tree Lane, a Debbie Macomber Christmas Cook Book, and a children’s book, “Yippy Yappy Yorkie in a Doggy Sweater. Gregg Olsen penned a Young Adult thriller, “Envy, which is set in Port Gamble. Sheila Roberts also has a new Christmas

book, “The Nine Lives of Christmas, Greg Atkinson shares “At the Kitchen Table: The Craft of Cooking at Home, and Susan Wiggs’ “Goodbye Quilt debuts in paperback. Other great local authors include Joe Upton with the release of “Bering Sea Blues: A Crabber’s Tale of Fear in the Icy North, Carol Cassella with the paperback release of “Healer, and Megan

Chance’s historical novel “City of Ash. Sonia Lien’s debut book, “From Alone to Aloha, is a compelling story of her journey of hope — from the destructiveness of bigotry to the defeat of bigotry, from abandonment and abuse to healing and joy, from profound loneliness to reunion with long lost family. Kitsap authors who write for younger readers include

Anjalee Banerjee, Barbara Berger, Lynne Brunelle, Suzanne Selfors and George Shannon, and they all have fabulous books out this holiday season. Kitsap County is the home of many more authors; stop in at your local bookstore to see the wealth of additional local authors. Many of these books are also sold as e-books. E-books can be purchased at your local independent

book stores at the same prices as chain stores. It is great to keep your money here in Kitsap County and support your local community. — Suzanne Droppert is owner of Liberty Bay Books in Poulsbo. Contact her at (360) 779-5909 or libertybaybooks@embarqmail.com

Michael Caine is a changed man in ‘The Muppets Christmas Carol.’

You don’t need a triple-dog-dare to enjoy ‘A Christmas Story.’

Will Ferrell is an oversized elf who embarks on a journey to discover who he really is, in ‘Elf.’

Kipp’s picks: The best holiday movies By KIPP ROBERTSON krobertson@northkitsapherald.com

NORTH POLE — Classic movies and the holidays go together like hot chocolate and marshmallows. Both combinations keep you coming back for more. Whether it be movies such as “The Muppets Christmas Carol, “Miracle on 34th Street, or “A Christmas Story, these movies are bound to be replayed long

after the DVD and Blu-ray player are extinct. Though some may seem less traditional than others — some actors may be unbearable at this point in their acting careers — these movies are worth another chance in the DVD (or Bluray, but probably not VCR) player: ■“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation: Starring Chevy Chase and

Beverly D’Angelo, this movie depicts a dysfunctional family that clashes during the most joyous time of the year. From an oversized Christmas tree to a rusting RV and a dog name Snots, this movie will have the family laughing through the holidays. (PG-13) ■“A Christmas Story: What has become one of the classic Christmas movie,

“A Christmas Story brings everyone back to their childhood and the need for the newest toy. Filled with humor both young and old can enjoy, it’s one of the best to watch in preparation for a presentfilled day. Starring Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin. (PG) ■“The Nightmare Before Christmas: Tim Burton’s film is based around a fictional town that only celebrates Halloween. The overarching storyline is based around Christmas and what joys the holidays can bring. It may not be the best movie for the younger kids, but the creepy characters and transition from scarefest to snowflakes it unforgettable. Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon and Catherine O’Hara star in this animated movie. (PG) ■“Elf : A man raised as an elf at the North Pole gets his world turned upsidedown when he travels to find out who he is. Will

Ferrell stars in this film. (PG) ■“Miracle on 34th Street: When a stranger replaces a mall Santa and then claims to be the real Santa Claus, confusion and misbeliefs rise. However, the man, who claims his name is Kris Kringle, is persistent in spreading cheer. There are two versions of this movie, from 1947 and 1994. Try both. (PG) ■“ The Muppets Christmas Carol: A holiday movie guide would not be complete without the Muppets. This film, starring Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppet cast, retells the Charles Dickens story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as he is visited by three Ghosts of Christmas. (G) ■“Home Alone: Starring Macaulay Culkin, “Home Alone is the first in a series which tells the story of a young boy named Kevin and his adventures during the holidays after his family

goes on a trip — unintentionally — without him. Say good night, Kevin. (PG) While the previous movies are generally safe for the entire family, the following movies may be best viewed after the young ones have gone to bed, with visions of Xbox 360s dancing in their heads: ■“Bad Santa: Billy Bob Thornton stars in this foullanguage-escapade as he drinks his way through the holidays and steals from unsuspecting malls. (R) ■“Die Hard: A group of terrorists holds up an entire plaza full of people Christmas Eve as they attempt to steal millions in bonds. Luckily, detective John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, is in town to visit his family. And what starts as a casual office party turns into a rescue mission. (R) ■“Scrooged: Another rendition of Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol, “Scrooged depicts a greedy television executive, played by Bill Murray, haunted by three ghosts. (PG-13)

Ingredients 2 pounds prepared masa without salt 2 cups sugar or to taste 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1-2 cups raisins, plumped in water 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans, walnuts or pine nuts (optional) 30-40 dried corn husks, cleaned of debris and soaked in warm water until pliable (about 20 minutes) Instructions Mix sugar and cinnamon into masa by hand. It’s messy but efficient. Taste dough for sweetness. Add more sugar if necessary. The masa will lose some sweetness during the cooking process. Be careful about adding more cinnamon, as cinnamon will turn the tamales dark during cooking. Drain raisins. Mix raisins and nuts into masa dough. Scoop about 2 tablespoons masa and place in center on the smooth side of 1 corn husk. Fold sides and bottom in. Tie with a strip of corn husk or string, if you like, or just leave folded. Repeat with remaining corn husks and filling. Cook tamales in a tamale steamer or in a conventional steamer. Line tray or basket with corn husks; place tamales on top. The tamales should not come in contact with the water. To prevent steamer from drying out, put a coin in the bottom of the steamer. You will hear it clinking as long as there is boiling water in the steamer. Steam tamales about 1 hour. They are done when masa no longer sticks to the corn husks

Ingredients 2 pkg. frozen chopped broccoli, cooked and drained (or equivalent amount of fresh broccoli) 1 can cream of mushroom soup 2 eggs 4 oz. sharp cheese, grated 3/4 cup mayonnaise 1 med. onion, chopped 1/2 cup Ritz cracker crumbs 9 oz. piloncillo (raw-sugar cones) Instructions Mix all ingredients except cracker crumbs. Pour into a square, well-buttered baking dish. Sprinkle top with crumbs and dot with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Frozen Peppermint Cheesecake This recipe has been around a long time; you likely had this when you were a child. Serve it up for a new generation. Ingredients 1 ½ cups chocolate wafer crumbs (2 cups is better!) Ÿ cup sugar Ÿ cup melted butter 1 (8 oz) package crème cheese, softened 1 (14 oz) canned sweetened condensed milk 1 cup crushed hard peppermint candy (canes, or round mints) 3 drops liquid red food coloring (optional) 2 cups whip cream, whipped crushed and whole peppermint candy for garnish. Use both red and green candy for holiday color. Directions Combine first 3 ingredients: firmly press onto bottom and 1 inch up the sides of a 9 inch springform (cheesecake) pan. Chill

Dear Santa: Please bring cool stuff Blister or paper cut? Stand out in the crowd with pickle, bacon or mustachethemed bandages ($5.99, Clever). Did your teen daughter recently suffer through a break-up? Soothe her feelings with the Kiss ’n’ Tell Magic Frog. Add water and the frog turns into a prince ($6.50, Les Saisons Boutique). Display the Big Dipper on your teen’s ceiling with glow-in-the-dark adhesive stars ($5, Toys Etc.).

The most unique gifts are often the ones in the stocking By ERIN JENNINGS ejennings@northkitsapherald.com

We’ve seen the commercials: a man reaches into his stocking on Christmas morning and finds a key to a luxury car. Or a woman tears up when she pulls out a pair of diamond earrings. Cue the snowflakes and sound the music. But most of us have smaller, more realistic budgets to work with when playing Santa’s elf. Stocking items don’t have to be pricey. But to be memorable, they need to be thoughtful, surprising and downright fun. It’s easy to find creative stocking stuffers in North Kitsap. Here’s a sampling of items priced $10 and under found at local shops.

For him Light up his nightly walk with Fido with the Life Gear 200-hour glow stick in red, green or blue. ($5.99, Coast Do It Best Hardware). Keep electronic cords organized and well-marked with cable ties (100 count in fluorescent colors, $6.79, James Lumber). Don’t let his can of

beer go flat! Cap it with the reusable Snapp Capp reclosable lid ($2.99, James Lumber). Does he enjoy long bicycle or motorcycle rides? Keep road rash at bay with Anti-Monkey Butt powder ($5.99, James Lumber). He will always be ready for unexpected formal events with the emergency bow tie in a tin ($7.99, Clever). Fish not biting? Calm his frustration with chipotle salmon spread ($5.99, Clever). A clean car seems to drive better. Help it sparkle with the Ultra Clean Wash Mitt ($7.99, Kingston Henery Hardware). Garlic lover? Keep his breath fresh with Bigfoot Mints ($2.99, Clever).

For children

put a special touch on home projects with colorful duct tape, available in a variety of colors and patterns, such as zebra and leopard print. ($6.99/ roll, Coast Do It Best Hardware). Know when it’s a perfect time for a beach walk with the yearly tide guide ($2.55, James Lumber). In a sea of black suitcases, she’ll be able to quickly find hers with a large and colorful luggage tag ($8.99, Beachside Gifts). Keep her wine fresh with an antique-looking key cork topper ($8.99, Clever).

Author-inspired candles shed a new light on the classics with Library Candles in different scents such as Jane Austen or Edgar Allen Poe ($9.99, Kingston Henery Hardware). Keep onions fresh with the Hutzler Onion Saver ($3.99, Coast Do It Best Hardware). They are pests in the garden, but a colorful ceramic slug makes a great paper weight ($6.50, Clever). Help keep her fingers toasty with hand-warmers (12-hour package, $1.79, James Lumber). No more boring gray—

For teens

chalk (variety of colors, $4.79, Coast Do it Best Hardware). Mustache-themed items are all the rage with the teen crowd, so surprise them with a mustacheshaped lollipop ($2.99, Clever) or adhesive facial hair ($5.30, Toys Etc.). Keep your teen connected to their childhood with toy replica key chains. Fisher Price turned classic toys into miniatures with a working corn popper, stacking rings and melody push chime ($7.99, Clever). Let it snow with instant snow, just add water ($3.99, Kingston Henery Hardware).

Furry and fuzzy animal rings, perfect for small fingers (various animals such as a panda and squirrel, $1.99, Clever). For the preteen girl, a set of four cupcake-inspired lip gloss in vanilla, chocolate, raspberry and strawberry ($8.99, Kingston Henery Hardware). Watch it grow! Help grow a child's imagination with fingerpuppet books. No more lost puppets — each puppet is attached to the book. (Various animals such as mouse and kitten, $6.95, Toys Etc.) Gooey slime from "outer space" ($2.50, Toys Etc.). Reusable rocket balloons with air pump ($6.99, Toys Etc.).

Get her a Hutzler Onion Saver. But it better not be your best present.

The woman in your life will like duct tape in her stocking — when it looks like this.

Temporary holiday tattoos and fingernail stickers ($1.50, Toys Etc.).

For pets Superior Pet Foods has presents for furry members of your family. Dogs will enjoy Darwin the Frog, a natural rubber squeaker ($4.40), or a stuffed fleece friend ($3.90.) Pick the right Christmas tree for your home By RICHARD WALKER rwalker@northkitsapherald.com

Y

ou probably remember the scene from the comedy, “Christmas Vacation.” Rusty Griswold looks at the gigantic Christmas tree his father has picked, and says, “Dad, that thing wouldn't fit in our yard!” To which Clark Griswold responds, looking proudly at his tree, “It's not going in our yard, Russ, it's going in our living room.” Only after the tree punches out his living room windows does Griswold realize he picked the wrong size tree for his home. That’s a movie scene. But it illustrates, in an exaggerated way, just how important it is to pick the right tree for your home. “The most important thing is know your spot, so you know how big a tree to get,” said Elda Armstrong, who with her husband owns St. Mick’s Tree Farm, 29747 Hansville Road, Kingston. This may sound like a no-brainer, but picking the right tree and identifying the right spot for it in your home are important for many reasons. Every year, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 260 home fires that started with Christmas trees. Christmas tree fires are not common, but when

Choosing the right Christmas tree is fun. It’s also important. You don’t want a tree that is too big, is too close to a heat source, and that will stay fresh through the season. winnerswisdom.wordpress.com they occur, they are likely to be serious. On average, one of every 21 reported fires that began with a Christmas tree resulted in death. A heat source too close to the Christmas tree started one of every five of these fires. Armstrong offers these tips to ensure you get a tree

that can be enjoyed the whole season. ■ Aromatic: “Nobles are the most popular, but grand firs are the most aromatic,” she said. “If you want to have your ornaments display properly, a sheared tree doesn’t cut it. Go with a tree that has not been sheared.” ■ Make sure it’s fresh:

Some trees may have been cut as early as October; cut trees stay fresh for three to four weeks. ■ Taking it home: When you put your tree on the top of your vehicle for the ride home, make sure the butt end goes toward the front of your vehicle so the needles aren’t being bent backward.

■ Putting it up: “Look at your house and put your tree away from a heat source,” Armstrong said. “We recommend that you decorate the bottom of the tree with unbreakable ornaments so children don’t break one and get cut.” ■ Keep it fresh: And keep it watered. “A freshly cut tree that’s put in water

within a half hour will last a long time,” Armstrong said. “Cut an inch off the bottom of the tree with a saw. Drill a hole up the trunk about a couple of inches with a quarter-inch or half-inch bit, depending on the size of the tree. Then put cotton in the hole; it serves as a wick. Add sugared 7-Up to your water — about one cup of sugared 7-Up to a gallon of water. The tree will drink up to a quart a day. If you can get it to take that water, it’s going to last a lot longer.” Trees aren’t just for the house: Rusty Griswold had the right idea about putting a holiday tree in the front yard. Armstrong said an Indiana couple augured a five-foot hole in the ground, planted a cut 15-to 20-foot tree in it, and decorated it with lights. “Everybody in town enjoys that tree,” Armstrong said. “Being in the ground like that, it will stay green until April or May. I’ve seen trees like that that stayed fresh enough to be decorated with Easter eggs.” Armstrong doesn’t recall any of her customers having a Griswold-like tree experience. But she remembers funny questions people ask. “A couple of years ago, a lady was cutting a tree with a hand saw, and just before she yelled ‘Timber,’ she asked, ‘is this tree fresh?”

Tree decorating: Do it right and keep it safe Each year, fire departments in the U.S. respond to an average of 210 structure fires caused by Christmas trees. Carefully decorating your Christmas tree can help make your holiday safer. Consider these tips from the National Fire Protection Association. ■ Picking the tree: If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant. If

you are picking a fresh tree, choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. ■ Placing the tree: Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1–2 inches from the base of the trunk. Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like candles, fireplaces, heat vents, lights or radiators. Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. Add water to the tree stand and add water

daily. ■ Lighting the tree: Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. Always

turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. ■ After Christmas: Get rid of the tree when it begins dropping needles. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards.

Candles on the Christmas tree: It was pretty in grandma’s day, but it’s not recommended today.
