As late fall gives way to winter, there is comfort (and joy) in gathering together with family, friends and neighbors. What exactly makes a “Bainbridge Holiday”? For some, it’s enjoying the island-specific traditions: the Island Studio Tour, Christmas in the Country, making wreaths at Bainbridge Gardens, counting down to the treelighting on Winslow, waiting for the sound of ho-ho-ho and holiday music streaming from the island’s fire truck. For others, it’s remembering those in need this time of year by volunteering at Helpline House, participating in the giving trees around town or caring for those who are far from home this season. For many, the holidays hinge on faith-based events and fellowship. The island has a diverse community and

there are congregations of all kinds to help you connect with those who share your beliefs. For some, lively and fresh cultural events are particularly uplifting. The December First Friday Art Walk, with Winslow windows all aglow, is a wonderful way to celebrate the creative spirit that abides here. “Celebrating a Bainbridge Holiday” is a matter of attitude. It’s about appreciating the special combination of qualities that make Bainbridge special. It’s about “Thinking Local First” when it comes to shopping, by supporting local store owners as much as possible while saving yourself the stress of getting “malled.” And with the growing agricultural base on the island, why not center your holiday meals around locally-grown meats and produce? Find out what’s growing right here with Sound Food’s local farm map (www.soundfood.org).

Bainbridge Chorale Director and Conductor Michael A. Miller Jr. leads the choir, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Bainbridge Chorale hits a high note this year By Connie Mears
Staff Writer It’s hard to find an island tradition more iconic than the Bainbridge Chorale’s Christmas Concert. In the summer of 1971, Bainbridge residents Gloria and Lou Goller invited a group of music lovers to their home to discuss forming a choral singing group. The idea was well received and on Sunday, Dec. 12, 1971, in the Bainbridge High School LGI Room, David Pence took the baton to lead the first performance of the Bainbridge Chorale featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s “Gloria.” For it’s 20-year anniversary, the Chorale sang “Messa de Gloria” by Giacomo Puccini and this year, celebrating its 40th anniversary also at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, the program will include John Rutter’s rousing “Gloria,” with double brass choir accompaniment. The program will also highlight the Bainbridge Island première of contemporary composer
Paul Mealor’s setting of “Ubi Caritas,” which was written for and first sung at the royal wedding of Kate and William in April 2011. The Chorale will be led by Music Director and Composer Michael A. Miller, Jr. who was hired in 2010 after an 18-month search. During the last 40 years, the organization has presented to the community all forms of music – classical, jazz, spirituals, show tunes, folk songs – in an ever-growing repertoire that includes choral masterworks as well as the music of local composers. Bainbridge Chorale has been joined by other groups over the years, including Bainbridge school choirs, the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, Choral Arts Northwest, and the Cascadian Chorale, as well as string quartets, brass chorales, organists, pianists, percussionists, banjo pickers and guitarists.
Pence, Bainbridge Chorale’s first director, who also led the Bainbridge Orchestra, Chorale & Orchestra, held the position for the first 10 years. Following a couple of interim directors, Norma Edens led the Chorale from 1982-1997 and Anthony Spain directed from 1999 to 2009. The Chorale has grown over the years with participation from more than 1,000 singers and has been accompanied by numerous musicians, including: Louise Bennett, Corrine Berg, Arni Blomquist, Chris Christensen, Jan Droge, Betsey Dunlap, Laura Milleson Dunston, Norma Edens, Bonnie Fjellde, Robin Hunt, Diane Johnston, Chris Kolbegger, Laura Kornelis, Erica Pence, Mary Pence, Bill Pelandini, Anne Pell, Chris Smellow, and Evie Stege. Bainbridge Chorale’s Managing Director Stephanie Harris said the group, many of whose members have been active for a decade or more, have
a strong sense of community.
A season of song The Bainbridge Chorale Young Singers, directed by Jeremy Rothbaum, start things off with a concert Dec. 4 at Blakely Elementary School. With two performances Dec. 1011 (see schedule on the next page), “Peace and Joy,” Bainbridge Chorale’s Christmas concert, will be one of the highlights of the season. Five years ago, Ovation! Musical Theatre and the Bainbridge Chorale collaborated to invite the community for an evening of singing carols and traditional music of the season. Led by Ovation! Music Director Todd Hulet, this family-friendly event on Dec. 17 has become a tradition with islanders. And, wrapping up the holidays, the Chorale and the Messiah Festival Orchestra offer a Messiah Sing-Along Dec. 27.

Ways to give during the holiday season Richard D. Oxley
STAFF WRITER While this time of year is full of grand meals and gifts with friends and family, there are those in the community who face difficult times this holiday season. From contributing gifts to donating food, Bainbridge Island is full of opportunities to help those in need. With your help, local individuals and families can have a fulfilling holiday season this year.
Operation Christmas Child Project Shoeboxes filled with non-food items for children ages 2-4,5-9, and 10-14 will be collected as part of Operation Christmas Child Project through Nov. 21 at Bainbridge First Baptist Church at the corner of Madison Ave. and State Highway 305. For more information, call 206-842-3621. Hours of collection are 2-6 p.m. Nov. 18; noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 19; 12:30-3:30 p.m. Nov. 20 and 9-10 a.m. Nov. 21.
Helpline House Helpline House is a local organization that offers a wealth of services. For Thanksgiving, island residents can help their neighbors by donating to the annual Project Wishbone drive. The project offers baskets of food so families can make a holiday dinner at home. Helpline House is now taking calls and requests for assistance this Thanksgiving. Donations of food, gift cards (for local grocery stores, etc.), and/or cash are welcome. Donations for Project Wishbone can be made at Helpline House on: Friday Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As the gift-giving season approaches, Helpline House will also be taking contributions for their Holiday Store. Donations of new toys for ages infant through high school can be dropped off at

The Bainbridge Island/ North Kitsap Interfaith Council The Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap Interfaith Council will be having its eighth annual Community Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. The Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church will host the service, which invites people from all faiths, or with no religious affiliation. People are encouraged to bring food donations for Helpline House and the Fishline Food Bank, or to make cash donations that go to support the Bainbridge Island Japanese-American Exclusion Memorial. For more information, call 8423564.
Patrons of downtown businesses will begin noticing “Giving Trees” popping up around Winslow Way. The trees will display laminated ornaments with the information of an individual they can help by purchasing a gift and where to drop the gift off at. Also, starting the three Saturdays before Christmas, Columbia Bank on Winslow Way (continuing a tradition that began with American Marine Bank) will have a special guest making an appearance. Santa will be in the lobby and available for photos, provided by local photographer Nick Felkey. A contribution of food, or a suggested donation of $5 is appreciated in return for the service. Donations go to Helpline House. For further information, visit www.bainbridgedowntown.org.
