Peter Driftmeyer steps ashore Monday after being rescued from his sailboat near the Coupeville boat launch. The 46-year-old had been stranded on his vessel since Saturday evening.
Man stranded at sea rescued By JUSTIN BURNETT Staff reporter
A Coupeville man was rescued from his sailboat Monday after being stranded aboard the vessel for more than a day. Peter Driftmeyer, 46, said he has been living on his boat for about five years. Moored about 100 yards out from the Coupeville boat launch on NE Ninth Street, the man uses a small skiff to travel to and from shore. However, large waves in Penn Cove Saturday evening caused the small craft to come free. With no phone and the larger boat’s sails and motor not functional, Driftmeyer spent all of Sunday stranded. By Monday morning, he began waving his arms in the hopes of flagging down a ride from a passing fisherman. “I had to get someone’s attention,” Driftmeyer said. Well, someone did notice, but it was
no fisherman. According to Coupeville Deputy Marshal Adrian Kuschnereit, a nearby resident saw Driftmeyer’s motions for aid and reported it at Town Hall. “Everybody kinda knows him and a few try and check up on him,” Kuschnereit said. Driftmeyer is often seen walking through town and is easily recognizable by his beard and backpack. The call for a marine rescue went out over the air waves, hitting the radios of emergency responders across Central Whidbey, and it wasn’t long before the parking lot was a hub of activity. Kuschnereit, a Whidbey General Hospital ambulance crew, and firefighters from Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue, with one fire engine and a rescue truck pulling the department’s boat, all responded to the call. “All of a sudden, all these flashing lights were in the parking lot,”
Driftmeyer said. A few minutes later, the stranded liveaboard was safely on land having been picked up by the department’s rescue boat. While grateful for the assistance, Driftmeyer said he was a little worried those flashing lights would turn into dollar signs. He was relieved to learn that the fire department does not send out bills to rescue victims. “It’s such a nice service to have,” Driftmeyer said. “They have your back.” This is the second time Driftmeyer has been rescued from his sailboat. About two years ago, his boat came free of its mooring and was in danger of running aground at the head of Penn Cove with him aboard. At that time, a U.S. Coast Guard cutter was dispatched but a workboat from the mussel farm arrived first and towed Driftmeyer and his boat to the Coupeville Wharf.
Island County Commissioner Kelly Emerson was snubbed by her colleagues on the board when she sought to become the new chairwoman Monday, further stoking hard feelings between her and the other two commissioners. “You’re out of line in implying that I’m not doing an adequate job and I resent it,” Emerson said in response to Commissioner Angie Homola’s explanation of why she felt Emerson wasn’t ready for the position. Under long-held tradition, it should have been Emerson’s turn to take on the chairperson position. The chairmanship normally rotates each year. Commissioner Angie Homola was chairwoman this year and Commissioner Helen Price Johnson was chairwoman the year before, so Emerson was up. Yet Price Johnson and Homola expressed doubts about Emerson’s dedication to the job, her work ethic, her relationship with county staff and her accessibility to staff and the public. The commissioners ended up naming Price Johnson to the post in a 2-1 vote. Price Johnson was the first woman to chair the Island County Board of Commissioners
when she was chosen two years ago. South Whidbey resident Rufus Rose has been attending commissioner meetings regularly for about 35 years and he said it was the first time that the tradition of rotating the chairmanship equitably wasn’t followed. He feels it is evidence that the two Democratic commissioners, Homola and Price Johnson, are “unwilling to credit different opinions.” Emerson is a Tea-Party Republican. “She should be accorded the same dignity and respect they were given,” he said. “I think it was disrespectful of the voters of Island County who put Emerson in there.” But North Whidbey resident Al Williams, who was also at the meeting, pointed out that Emerson is not a typical or traditional commissioner. She’s the first commissioner in county, and perhaps state, history to sue her own county and county employees. He also claimed she’s inaccessible to the public and stays at her Oak Harbor home when she claims to be available to citizens on Camano Island. Likewise, Price Johnson and Homola didn’t mince words when explaining their reluctance to name Emerson SEE EMERSON, A4
Human remains stand at 7 today, but more predicted By JUSTIN BURNETT Staff reporter
After nearly five months of mystery, the black plastic veil of secrecy hiding the archaeological site in downtown Oak Harbor has finally come down. However, aside from a new dirt road, there isn’t much
to see and state and city officials are providing little information about just what was recovered. As of Tuesday, Nov. 15, the confirmed number of Native American individuals found stands at seven, though experts believe that figure will increase. “There’s absolutely
more, it’s just a question of how many,” said Allyson Brooks, director of the state Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Although archaeological work has ceased in what was the southern lane of Pioneer Way, in front of Mike’s Mini Mart and Oak Harbor
Tavern, results are slow in coming largely because of what was found. Early on, experts were finding skeletons that were mostly intact, which made identifying individuals much easier, Brooks said. Later, recovery was limited to small bone fragments and the state
agency’s physical anthropologist is literally now tasked with putting them back together. “He’s looking at thousands of pieces,” Brooks said. She also said that this is just one of many projects the anthropologist is working on all over the state. Coming up
with some definitive answers is going to take some time. SEE PIONEER, A4

Gale dims lights all over Whidbey By JUSTIN BURNETT Staff reporter
The windstorm that battered Whidbey Island Friday reached gale-force strength and knocked out power in communities from Clinton to Oak Harbor. Johnny Burg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle, said wind gusts at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station topped out at 48 mph while wind speeds at Smith Island off West Beach reached 54 mph. Wind speeds between 39 and 54 mph are classified as a gale-force winds, he said. Washington’s western coastline was hit by a windstorm in September, but this was the first of the year for Whidbey Island. “It was the windiest event so far, Burg said. Although some say the storm wasn’t as bad it could have been, it did wreak havoc on power lines across the island. According to Allison Stanford, a spokeswoman with Puget Sound Energy, broken tree limbs were
responsible for scattered outages in Clinton, Langley, Freeland, Greenbank and Oak Harbor, along with small pockets of rural Island County. The most significant outage occurred in Langley just before 5 p.m., said Stanford, in an email to the Whidbey New-Times. About 400 customers near Highway 525 were without power until early Saturday morning. Again, the culprit was a broken tree branch that knocked down a wire. “It is not unusual this time of year when it becomes windier and the trees are still full and weighted down by leaves and foliage to experience scattered power outages, Stanford wrote. As winds persisted into Saturday and Sunday, crews worked to restore small, scattered outages across Whidbey Island, she said. Washington State Ferries rode out the storm well, seeing only one round-trip cancellation on the Coupeville to Port Townsend ferry route. Laura Johnson, a

Finally, areas along West Beach Road that get pummeled with large waves every year got by with little or no problem, said Bill Oakes, director of Island County Public Works. Wind waves were large enough

EMERSON CONTINUED FROM A1 to the position. “It’s unfortunate that you have an adversarial relationship with at least one department, Price Johnson said, likely referring to Emerson’s lawsuit against the county planning department, the huge fines she owes the department and the unresolved issues over a project that her husband started building without a permit. “It takes a great deal of dedication and commitment to do this job. You need to be at work and work collaboratively, Homola said, referring to reports that Emerson is rarely at her office. In response, Emerson said the accusations are completely false and she blamed them for “throwing out distorted conceptions based on their opinions. She has previously pointed out that she keeps office hours at the Camano annex and has a home office. To be sure, Emerson does have an unusually contentious relationship with her fellow commissioners, though her supporters feel she is just standing up for what she believes. Just prior to the vote on the chairmanship, for example, she injudiciously accused her fellow

An Oak Harbor surveying firm that did work on SE Pioneer Way has had its contract limit increased by 27 percent. At the city council’s meeting Nov. 1, it agreed to raise the total payable to Fakkema & Kingma from a previously approved $103,178 to $130,808. That is an increase

commissioners of not showing leadership in an issue over the purchase of Camano Island property. Under state law, members of the board of county commissioners are supposed to elect a chairperson in the first session after the general election. The chairperson is responsible for signing legal documents and running the meetings. The chairperson has some control over who can speak at meetings. Monday morning, Emerson made a motion to appoint herself as the chairwoman. “I think I deserve it and I think it would allow me to get ever more inclusive in the process, she said. Her motion, however, died for lack of a second. Homola then made a motion to appoint Price Johnson to the post. She pointed out that Emerson took office just this year and there’s plenty of time left in her four-year term for her to be chairperson someday.
PIONEER CONTINUED FROM A1
“You have to understand, it’s going to take months, she said. Complicating the release of a final report is the Pit Road site. The dirt was excavated from Pioneer Way and the fragments within the soil will certainly affect the findings. Although the state has issued the city a permit to begin archaeological work at the site, no start date has been released. According to project manager Larry Cort, the barricade on Pioneer Way was dropped Nov. 8. The plan had been to put it back up in what was the northern lane of the street while similar archaeological work was
of $27,630. The contract change was largely the result of Native American remains discovered on Pioneer Way this past June. The company had to restake some areas and survey archaeological grid pins to establish the proper depth required to build the street between Ilwaco and Ireland, according to the agenda bill
before the city council. Finally, the firm did extra work not included in the scope of the original contract, from surveying storefront elevations to the future locations of art pieces to be installed along Pioneer Way. Although Oak Harbor project manager Larry Cort told council members that city staff are investigating whether or not some or all of
the re-staking work should be covered by the city’s project management firm, KBA, he recommended the city cover the cost until it’s sorted out. “There is no doubt Fakkema & Kingma did this work and they did it well, Cort said. The city council approved the contract increase unanimously.
conducted there. The area will be made into sidewalks and parking. However, hoping to reduce archaeological costs and the risk of finding additional human remains, city officials have hatched a new plan that could involve very little digging. Instead of excavating enough soil to make the parking lot flush with the rest of the street, city officials hope to pave over the existing dirt and create a slightly elevated area. It would be flush with the sidewalk and include a “roll-curb at the transition to the street, Cort said. But it’s uncertain whether the plan will move forward as it will require a change to the city’s permit with the state historic preservation office. Cort said they hoped to file the permit change
Tuesday. Brooks confirmed that any changes to the permit will have to be approved. The city’s plan for a raised parking area is not out of the ordinary, but she said it will have to be run past the tribes. While some of those to be contacted have OK’d such solutions in the past, others have not been so supportive. “It’s tribe by tribe, Brooks said. According to Cort, the decision will have financial ramifications. Although he declined to speculate with numbers, he said if the plan is approved some archaeological work will still have to be conducted along with tribal monitoring but not nearly as much as if the permit change is rejected. Cort said the Pioneer
Way project is still within budget at about $7.6 million, but the discovery of Native American remains has so far resulted in about $565,000 in unexpected archaeology, security and miscellaneous expenses and about $150,000 in unplanned fees with the city’s contractor and surveying firm. None of the those figures include the cost of the Pit Road site or the expense of reburying the Native American remains collected. The project contractor is expected to return around the end of the month and, weather permitting, Cort said rest of the street should be paved within four to six weeks. The entire project, including the removal of power lines and poles, should be finished no later than March, he said.

Whidbey baby CPSO at 11:11 a.m. Nathaniel arrives in time for Veterans Day By KATHY REED Whidbey Crosswind
Baby Nathaniel knows how to make an entrance. The 6-pound, 13-ounce baby boy was born at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville last Friday at 11:11 a.m. That’s right, his birthdate is 11/11/11 at 11:11 a.m. “That is kind of freaky, acknowledged dad Byran, an aviation structural mechanic at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. “We joked about it, telling him to hold off, but we didn’t expect it to happen. (The family has asked not to have their last name published.) Byran, who has been
on deployment for the past six months, got home Thursday afternoon. Less than 12 hours later, he and his wife, Chia, went to the hospital for the birth of their second child. Big sister, Sophia, is 2-and-a-half. Chia said the last six months have been hard. “It was very emotional, wondering if he was going to be home in time, she said. “And just the emotional adjustment of having him home. There wasn’t much time together as a family (before the baby was born). Chia and Byran say they’re looking forward to spending time together now that baby and daddy are here safely. That, and sharing the story of Nathaniel’s timely entrance. “I guess he’ll have something to talk about for the rest of his life, said Byran.

Dudley earns mayor’s chair
Keep an eye on the city
Scott Dudley will be Oak Harbor’s new mayor due to the impressive results of the Nov. 8 election when he unseated incumbent Jim Slowik with a victory margin of 13 percent. Dudley was a low-key critic of the mayor as he sat on the city council for nearly two years, asking tough questions and making the mayor and his supporters squirm. Whenever he saw a chance to make allies of the city critics, he took it. Dudley provided a shoulder to cry on when opponents criticized the decision to make downtown a one-way street or asked why more wasn’t done to prevent the costly fiasco of the Native American remains. Slowik was an effective mayor and very high profile, always present at major public events and involved in islandwide issues such as working with the Port of South Whidbey to bring an expansion of Nichols Brothers Boat Builders in Freeland to Oak Harbor. The present mayor also kept a high profile by using the city’s Channel 10 as it has never been used before. His unofficial Jim Slowik Show featured mayoral interviews with everyone from the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station commanding officer to the police and fire chiefs and other department heads. It was informative TV but also kept Slowik’s face before the public right up to election day. Dudley, meanwhile, was working under the radar, using shoe leather as his main campaign tool. He walked city streets knocking on doors, listening to citizens and making his pitch for mayor. Effective politicians are often brought down by something called hubris, defined as “excessive pride and self confidence. In other words, the voters feel their leader isn’t listening to them, thinking that he or she knows best. When the city ignored the outcry against the one-way project, one that was led by downtown merchants who gathered more than 2,000 signatures against it, the handwriting was on the wall. Whether the project would pan out in the end or not, someone would pay for pushing it through. Mayor Slowik can leave with his head held high. He deserves the community’s gratitude for four years of hard, sincere work which saw many improvements to the city. He provided the tough, focused leadership that had been missing for years. Dudley deserves congratulations for running and outstanding and low-key campaign. If he runs the city in a similar fashion, he won’t be making any rash decisions and the transition will go smoothly. The council should give him a chance to lead and continue working together to make Oak Harbor a better place to live.

What next? Oak Harbor residents who supported Mayor-elect Scott Dudley cannot turn their backs now. Dudley will need all the public support he can muster (and a healthy dose of leadership) to unite what will almost certainly be a dysfunctional city government without “we the people shining a very bright light on them all. Why? Because this election is neither a rejection of the council’s approach, nor an endorsement of Dudley’s. If it were, incumbents would have been swept from office, or at least challenged more strongly. On the other hand, if Dudley’s point of view was not resonating, he would not have been elected despite the greater apparent muscle of Mayor Slowik. Consequently, there is no reason for council members to abandon their approach, or for Dudley to abandon his own. But, fair warning: this is a recipe for paralysis of governance. Unless, that is, “we the people keep close tabs on them all, and make our feelings known. We must not settle for political sniping, which is no substitute for constructive forward movement. If we hit the snooze button til the next election, Oak Harbor will go places none of us want it to go. If this happens, shame on Oak Harbor’s elected leaders, and shame on us. Let’s start the healing process by thanking Mayor Slowik. I have publicly questioned several policies Jim has supported, but I have never questioned Jim’s
commitment to Oak Harbor or his incredible work ethic as mayor. Thanks, Jim. Mayor-elect Dudley (I do not you know well enough to use your first name), you must walk that chalk line of staying true to the beliefs that brought you into office, while realizing they were not the only beliefs ratified by the electorate. You have my support. Paul Newman Oak Harbor
Don’t overlook the bright side I am an educator employed by the Oak Harbor School District. Educators are facing unparalleled cuts in our salary, benefits and retirement. I am so grateful though for working with my colleagues, students, HCE families, and district that I wanted to write a letter to celebrate this season of thankfulness. As our community, state and nation are faced with these difficult and heartbreaking financial concerns, it is so important to remember that we live in a wonderful town, beautiful state and a great nation.

Paying teachers not to work Instead of paying teachers not to come to work, we should eliminate 14 of the 19 days from the local supplemental contract, the so-called TRI-Days, and use those existing $2 million in K-12 education resources to pay for more tangible items such as textbooks, transportation, technology, building maintenance, capital projects, utilities, a restored 30-minute longer middle school day, an actual 180-day studentin-attendance school year with all full-schedule days, or perhaps, also, five entire school days if the state eliminates them as is being discussed. Last year, the local teachers’ union retained every
penny’s worth of 14 days of TRI-Pay in their local “supplementary contract, while, in response to a minor funding reduction from the state level, the local school calendar was reduced by eliminating 30 minutes from the middle school day and, yet again as has been done at other times in years past, some school days were devolved to half-days. TRI Pay logic: We don’t have dollars to pay teachers to come to work, but we have enough dollars to pay teachers not to show up for work! A report posted at the state Board of Education’s website concludes: “The state should eliminate the salary schedule and TRI structure. Our state Legislature should act to do so. Local school boards should act to eliminate TRIDays from contracts. Voters should withhold all school district levy dollars until all dollars for TRI-Days are instead all being used for actual school days. We should do this for the kids. William Burnett Oak Harbor

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ,OPDLJOH PO EPPST key to success Most people will take the mayoral election results as proof that people were dissatisfied with Mayor Jim Slowik, and there’s no doubt that some people were very unhappy with the Pioneer Avenue project. I interpret the election results very differently. Dudley ran a very effective campaign by knocking on doors, talking to people, answering questions, advancing his agenda. Slowik ran a low-key campaign, saying that he couldn’t afford the time to do more. That was a mistake. Knocking on doors is powerful. In this case, I believe it was decisive. Anyone who aspires to public office should take note. I regret that we failed to re-elect Mayor Slowik. I am grateful that he managed to move Oak Harbor ahead with the Pioneer Avenue reconstruction. The mayor helped to solve a problem that has dogged Oak Harbor for decades. The results are beautiful, and should be finalized within days. Thank you, Mayor Slowik! I hope that Mayor-elect Dudley will prove as effective at governing as he did at campaigning. Richard Donovan Oak Harbor
'PPE EPOBUJPO TUPSZ BQQSFDJBUFE I want to say thank you so very much to the Whidbey News-Times for taking the time and effort to send reporter Rebecca Olson to the Help House Nov. 3 to cover the story of my granddaughter Chyann Barrett giving food to Help House. I read the letters to the editor all the time and I seldom see where anyone says thank you to the Whidbey News-Times for coving a story. You see, my granddaughter just turned 9 years old Oct. 22. She told her mom (my daughter, Traci Wisdom) that she would like to give food to Help House because one day as they were driving by she saw all those people standing outside the building to get food. Now my granddaughter is also deaf, or as you would say hearing impaired. As we all know, what “really sells newspapers is “all the negative things that go on in the community or our nation and around the world. We hardly ever see the good

things that people are doing. So when I contacted Jean at Help House and told her what my granddaughter was going to do, she called the NewsTimes to see if they would come and do a story about her. Now we all know again, that the newspaper gets a lot of requests for many things. So I can imagine how hard it must be for them to make decisions on what stories to cover. As a longtime citizen of Oak Harbor, I want to just say thank you and God bless you and the people who do their very best to report the news to our Island, for choosing to go to Help House and report about something good happening in Oak Harbor. I’m not only proud of being a parent and grandparent, but also a citizen of Oak Harbor. Whidbey News-Times staff, keep up doing the fine job you are doing. I know you don’t get very many “thank yous, but from the Turners, Terrys and Wisdom families, words will never say how much it means to us that you sent one of your reporters to Help House. It means so much to us and hopefully others. Tim Turner Oak Harbor

We were blessed with a beautiful day and 500 registered riders. With the support of our volunteers, sponsors, contributors and riders, the event raised $60,000 for the hospital. We want to acknowledge the dedicated members of the Island County Amateur Radio Club and the Island Wings motorcycle group for doing such a fantastic job of monitoring the routes. Some other behind-the-scenes folks that make the ride possible are the teams who are out the week before the ride marking the pavement with route arrows and putting up route signs. Central Whidbey budget includes fire engine By JUSTIN BURNETT Staff reporter
Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue’s board of commissioners approved the district’s 2012 budget Thursday. Meeting at Fire Station 53, the agency’s administrative headquarters, Commissioners Tom Smith, Paul Messner and Chairwoman Cheryl Engle approved the budget by unanimous vote. According to district documents, the biggest expenses of the year are tied to a handful of capital purchases. The largest is the acquisition of a new fire engine at a cost not to exceed $500,000. It will immediately replace Engine 542, which was built in 1986. It will also take the place of its sister fire truck, Engine 512, at a later date. Although that will mean one less rig at Central Whidbey’s disposal, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, said Fire Chief Ed Hartin, in an earlier interview. “I wouldn’t say we’d be down one, it’s more a case of how many do we really need, Hartin said. Engine 542 was scheduled for replacement two
years ago, but Hartin said the purchase was delayed shortly after his appointment as chief so an assessment of the district’s assets and community needs could be completed. Hartin said one new fire truck, which carries more water than the older vehicle, and the refurbishment of three water tenders could adequately take the place of the two vintage engines. One tender has already been refurbished, and a large portion of work to the second, roughly $82,500, is slated for 2012. The remaining reconditioning, along with work to the third tender, would be completed in 2013. The district plans to spend about $60,000 improving radio communications, about $55,000 on repairs to a training building/burn room in Greenbank and about $40,000 to replace an old emergency rescue minivan that was picked up as surplus from Island Transit. It will be traded in for a new crew-cab truck. Finally, the department plans to spend about $15,460 on a financial management accounting system, about

$15,000 on seven new defibrillators and about $5,000 on a mobile data computer for a command vehicle. The district’s maintenance and operation budget, which pays for everything from office supplies to salaries and uniforms, will grow from about $1.6 million in 2011 to about $1.66 million next year. That represents an increase of about 3.8 percent. Employment expenses account for the largest part of the fund’s growth, totaling $41,282 more than last year. While $29,863 of that is comprised of salaries, wages and reimbursements, it’s not the result of cost of living increases. “The firefighters’ union voted to take a zero, zero and zero (cost of living increase) over their three-year contract due to the current economic climate, Hartin said. In fact, Hartin said no district staff will receive raises in 2012. To support the union’s sacrifice, administrative staff with increases already built into their contracts — that includes Hartin — volunteered to waive their raises. The 3.8 percent increase is largely due to the cost of
filling out department ranks. At the beginning of 2011, the district had just six parttime firefighters, which is five short of 11 total positions. The spots have since been filled. The only employees who will see a bigger paycheck next year are three of the district’s six full-time firefighters. Hartin said they are expected to be promoted. Personnel benefits, from state Department of Labor and Industries and unemployment contributions to medical and dental plan expenses, will cost the district an additional $11,446 over last year. Finally under office and operating supplies, a catchall section of the maintenance and operating fund that includes everything from pencils to firefighting foam, the district plans to spend about $13,533 more than last year. Most of that will be spent on training manuals concerning hazardous materials and apparatus operation. According to Hartin, standards have changed over the past decade and this will allow firefighters to hit the books and get caught up.

An Island County judge has ordered the driver in a triple-fatality car accident near Clinton held on $150,000 bail. Kaylea F. Souza, 18, was arrested just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday on three charges of vehicular homicide. Souza had a preliminary court appearance via a three-way telephone call with District Court Judge Peter Strow and her jailer just after 3 p.m. Saturday. Strow ruled there was probable cause for Souza’s arrest for vehicular homicide and set bail at $150,000. If Souza is released on bail, Strow said she must not drink alcohol, cannot leave the state, cannot drive under any circumstances and can-
not refuse a drug test. Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks said Monday that he expects Souza to make her first court appearance Wednesday. “I expect that she will be charged this week, Banks said. Saturday’s telephonic court appearance was necessary because people who are arrested must appear before a judge within 48 hours or be released. Banks said such hearings are usually held in the county jail and are simple affairs; a telephone on a desk in the jail with the defendant and jailer standing by, and an oncall judge on the telephone. Banks said Souza could face arraignment on Nov. 28. “Assuming we charge her on Wednesday, which
we should do, then we will set an arraignment date, most likely two weeks from today, Banks said. Banks said he was awaiting a detective’s report on the investigation from the Washington State Patrol before moving ahead on a charging decision. According to the State Patrol, Souza was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu south on Wilkinson Road near Clinton when she lost control while passing another vehicle and hit a tree near midnight Friday, Nov. 11. Three people died in the fiery crash; Rob Knight, 22, Mick Poynter, 20, and Mack Porter, 19. The State Patrol said speed and alcohol were factors in the accident. Poynter and Knight were well known on South Whidbey. Poynter was a 2009 graduate of South Whidbey High School who played on the baseball team, and Knight was a star Falcon football player who was the Cascade Conference’s
most valuable player in 2006. His father Bruce helped coach the team. Porter’s home address was listed as Palmdale, Calif. All three young men died at the accident scene. State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary said it wasn’t known if they died in the crash or were killed in the fire that quickly engulfed the car. Nearby trees were scorched to the height of 20 feet by the conflagration. Leary said speed and alcohol were factors in the accident, but he did not know if the passengers had been drinking. Souza, the driver of the vehicle, is a 2011 graduate of Bayview School and a Langley resident. She was taken to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment after the accident and was later booked into the Island County jail. Banks said he first heard about the accident via a news report Saturday. “It’s just a rotten, rotten case, he said.

Coupeville locals ready Thanksgiving 'JMF QIPUP
Diners enjoy last year’s free Thanksgiving dinner in Oak Harbor.
Free turkey tradition continues in Oak Harbor What do you get when you combine a bunch of turkeys, the Elks Lodge, roughly 10 crazy organizers, and Thanksgiving Day? Answer: The 10th annual North Whidbey Community Harvest. On Thursday, Nov. 24, which is Thanksgiving day, North Whidbey Community Harvest is proud and happy to offer a free full turkey dinner that will be served from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Oak Harbor. As in previous years for those that are not able to get out or are working, meals will be delivered upon request. Call 675-9909 in advance or, on Thanksgiving, call the Elks Lodge at 675-1321 and speak with the delivery coordinator or his staff. As the event grows and the cost of supplies increases each year so do monetary
needs. This year the projected budget appears to be in excess of $17,000. To help, make a donation at the door on Thanksgiving, or drop off a donation with Jack Stiltz at Bay Printing on Barrington Avenue. Donations may also be mailed to North Whidbey Community Harvest, c/o Bay Printing, 1131 SE Ely St., Oak Harbor, WA 98277. Checks should be made out to “Community Harvest.
Recreation Hall becomes home to community potluck dinner Friends, neighbors, families and visitors are welcome to join the 13th annual community Thanksgiving potluck Thursday, Nov. 24, at the Coupeville Recreation Hall on the corner of Alexander and Coveland. A traditional spread will be served buffet-style from noon until 2:30 p.m. or until the food
runs out. Turkey and ham are provided by the organizers, while the rest of the menu is up to those who attend. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase a favorite family recipe or try something new. No need to sign up in advance; just plan to bring a side dish or dessert. The community Thanksgiving is a smokeand alcohol-free event that just gets better every year. Why sit home alone, fix a huge meal for a few or dine out in a restaurant when
you can spend the holiday with like-minded folks in a convivial atmosphere ... and stuff yourself into the bargain? The community feast is free, fun and friendly. Make a new tradition. Coupeville’s community Thanksgiving potluck is one of two events celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday. Thousands of people enjoy dinner at the Elks Club in Oak Harbor. The gathering is loosely organized by locals, and help is always welcome. To get involved, call Sue Winker at 678-1224.

From the ancient Terra Cotta Warriors to the Great Wall to the Buddhist caves, China and Taiwan have thousands of experiences to offer. Gerald Kovacich will help you navigate your trip to China at a presentation on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Coupeville Library as part of the library’s travel series. Kovacich will address general travel questions, touring questions and how to act like a good American abroad, complete with photos of his many trips to China. Kovacich’s eyes light up when he speaks of the Shaolin Temple, with its forest of pagodas holding the ashes of high-ranking monks, the impressive Terra Cotta Warriors, art meant to protect the emperor buried there and the modern architecture of Shanghai. “There’s some cool-looking buildings, said Kovacich, a modern architecture buff. He noted the 1,500-foot tall Pearl Tower with a clear glass floor at the top that he wasn’t about to step on. Kovacich has ridden camels along the Silk Road, toured tem-
ples and embraced the ancient history and modern culture of China. But China means more to Kovacich than an exciting destination. “I feel comfortable there, Kovacich said. He’s always looking forward to his next trip. Kovacich said he used to do lectures in Europe but, “I just gravitate back to Asia. Kovacich spent 20 years in the Air Force, many of which were in Asia. The Air Force sent him to Asian language school, which he said comes in handy especially when bargaining and listening to vendors discuss the deal in Chinese. “I don’t tell them I understand, Kovacich said with a laugh. The essence of Asia lives in Kovacich’s connection to the Buddhist philosophy of life, which calls for patience, compassion and love, as well as in his home. Asian paintings adorn the walls and Kovacich has met most of the artists. Handmade furniture and Buddha statues bring Asian history into his home and temple dogs guard doorways. While Asia has made an impact on Kovacich, he’s also making an impact on Asia. While traveling in Cambodia, he came across
the Grace English Center, which teaches children English. “There’s no running water or electricity but parents send them to this school to learn English, Kovacich said. When he visited, Kovacich noticed that the children had no books aside from textbooks. When he returned to America, he purchased used children’s books at a library book sale and sent them to the children, who loved them. Since then, he has sent more than 200 books. This has become a project for Kovacich and he welcomes everyone to donate used children’s books via a box at the Coupeville Library. His goal is to collect 250 more books by Feb. 1 to send to the children in April in time for their New Year’s holiday. “I’d like to be able to give them these books so each kid can have one to keep for New Year’s, Kovacich said. Most Asian children learn English but most Americans don’t learn Chinese, Kovacich said. “I always encourage people to take Chinese and understand Asia and work for an international organization and get good pay, travel and have fun, Kovacich said, adding that the Chinese market is
booming. Capitalism is alive and well in China, with people starting new businesses, buying cars and traveling, Kovacich said. “I can stand in Tiananmen Square and see 30 high-rise cranes building and building and building, Kovacich said. “It’s a good place to visit. The people are very nice, Kovacich said, adding that as a guest in the country, tourists shouldn’t try to change the people’s ways of thinking or their government. While people assume it’s very expensive to travel so far, in his presentation, Kovacich will address how to travel well but affordably. Not including airfare to and from China, for two people to spend 12 days traveling around China, going to shows, eating and staying in five-star hotels, Kovacich said they spent approximately $4,200. From the pros and cons of group tours to traversing the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, Kovacich will pique travelers’ curiosity and prepare them for adventure. There’s so much to see; “you could spend months. I would recommend the trip to everybody, Kovacich said.
