THREE KILLED IN CLINTON CRASH Whidbey devastated by horrific tragedy

Flowers and mementos cover the ground at the scene of the accident that claimed three young lives early Saturday. A memorial service for one of the victims, Rob Knight, is planned for Friday evening in Freeland. BY BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record

LANGLEY — From lifelong friends to casual acquaintances, weeping relatives to stunned mourners, they sat in darkness, illuminated only by the light of flickering candles. Hundreds gathered at the grandstands next to the football field at South Whidbey High School on Saturday night to mourn the three young men killed in a car crash overnight. All three, 22-yearold Rob Knight, 20-year-old Mick Poynter and

19-year-old Mack Porter, were SWHS graduates. “Memories leave nothing to look forward to,” said Cory Soto, a friend to all three. “I wish there could be more than just that.” The three victims died in a car crash around midnight Friday. According to the Washington State Patrol, the driver of the vehicle had been drinking and speeding. She survived, and is currently in Island County jail on charges of vehicular homicide. Soto was one of a handful of mourners who

spoke to the crowd at Saturday’s vigil. “It’s a decision that people make all the time, whether or not to drink or drive, to stay or to go, to have somebody DD (designated drive) even if the other person is just slightly drunk,” Soto said. “It’s a decision that can leave you with just a memory. And that’s nothing to look forward to.” News of the terrible crash spread quickly on the South End, and the vigil marked the first SEE TRAGEDY, A6

CLINTON — It was just after midnight Friday, and Robert Volz heard a loud noise and looked out his living room window to see headlights in his driveway. “What the hell’s going on?” he asked. He soon found out. Hell was across the street. Volz looked out his door and

saw flames on the other side of Wilkinson Road. He turned to his girlfriend and told her to call 911. He ran down his driveway, and someone in the waiting car asked him to call 911. Volz told them they already had as he kept going toward the flames. When he got to the road, he saw two girls sitting in the street, right near the sign for Meander Lane. They were holding each other,

screaming and crying. Volz looked over and saw the bus stop shelter wasn’t on fire — he had first thought kids had torched it when he saw flames — but it was a small car, too mangled to see what type. The girls told him what happened, too fast to catch it all, but they said they had pulled a girl out but there were still three others inside.

The flames were more than 20 feet high. “It just burned and burned.” “It … was horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible. I’ve never seen anything like that. And never want to again,” Volz said. A Langley police car pulled up a minute or two later and the officer ran up with the small extinguisher SEE NIGHT, A6

FREELAND — Lou Malzone won’t get to make good on a big campaign promise. Three other guys beat him to it. At their first meeting since last week’s election, commissioners for the Freeland Water and Sewer District unanimously voted to rescind a resolution that created a local improvement district, or LID, that would pay for a new $40 million sewer system in Freeland. Controversy over the LID has raged for months, and the cost of the ambitious sewer project inspired Malzone to run for a commissioner’s seat. Malzone, and fellow candidate Marilynn Abrahamson, defeated incumbent commissioners Nolen “Rocky” Knickerbocker and Jim Short in a landslide Nov. 8. Once Malzone and Abrahamson are sworn in, they will take control of the three-member board. Abrahamson has also been a vociferous critic of the $40 million sewer plan, and she ran a combined campaign with Malzone that centered on wisdom of the sewer project, which they said would subsidize sewers for downtown business interests by shifting much of the massive costs to residential property owners. During the campaign, Malzone vowed to repeal the resolution that gave the district the authority to pass costs of the sewer project along to property owners in the Freeland area. At Monday’s meeting of the district board, however, commissioners voted 3-0 to repeal the LID resolution. The turnabout came after SEE LID, A20

David Ossman has one of those voices not soon forgotten. It’s a voice that has been caressing the theaters, studios and airwaves of the United States for more than 40 years and that’s something to celebrate, and celebrate again. Ossman and his band of radio show brothers of the legendary Firesign Theatre will celebrate that milestone with an anniversary celebration of their seminal recording, “I Think We’re All Bozos On This Bus,” at Kirkland Performance Center Nov. 18 and 19. This stripped down stage production of new and original work by the fabulous four will also be performed in Portland, Ore. Dec. 9 and 10. The show features the usual smart, funny and surreal shenanigans of the Firesign characters as performed by Ossman, Phil Austin, Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman, and staged as if in a virtual radio station. The live show will feature a fresh take on “Bozos,” a spin on the Antelope freeway, a new Nick Danger mystery, and the latest iteration of their venerable Shakespeare parody, “Anythynge You Want To.” Speaking of which, as editor and co-author, Ossman has announced the new, revised edition of “Anythynge You Want To — Shakespeare’s Lost Comedie.” The book is more than just a rousing send-up of Shakespeare. It is a fulllength theatrical entertainment, written and re-written continually throughout the Firesign Theatre’s long performing career. This volume collects every iambic double entendre and silly soliloquy into a surreal comedy opus, complete with Firesign’s “scholarly” introduction, tongue-in-cheek footnotes, diagrams and even recipes. Legend of the Firesign Theatre,” which presents the comic mythology of the Firesign’s most popular recorded worlds, including photographs from performances and graphics by Bruce Litz. Another momentous

celebration for Ossman is his 75th birthday, which he will mark with his own art exhibit titled “Empty Words” at Rob Schouten Gallery at Greenbank Farm. The exhibit will include paintings, drawings and three-dimensional work. The show opens Friday, Dec. 2 with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. during First Fridays at the Farm, and continues through December. And at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, his actual birthday, Ossman will read from his newest literary work, “The Old Man’s Poems — New Work 2010-11,” also at Rob Schouten Gallery. The happy birthday reading is free and open to the public; limited seating available. When asked for his thoughts about such an auspicious anniversary year, Ossman waxed practical, and poetical. “Seventy-five seems a good time to sum-up-to-

date, so I’m working both on a lifetime of poetry and 45 years of Firesign writing which will find their ways to print next year,” he said. “It’s also a time when the “old” work seems very new — Firesign plays ready to be staged by others for example. A letting go and a gathering up. More importantly, a sharing,” he said. Luckily for his fans the sharing doesn’t stop there. Ossman will round out the year with a reading of the Beat poets with blues guitarist David Gregor from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at Ott & Murphy’s Winery Tasting Room in downtown Langley. At 75 the artist is, after it all, grateful. “I’m completely blessed by my family, the Whidbey community and my creative partners,” Ossman said. — Patricia Duff

NEWSLINE | WEATHER REPORT: Rain today, with a high near 46. A 50-percent chance of showers Thursday, with rain and snow showers likely Friday. CLINTON High winds knock out power High winds on Whidbey Island over the weekend led to small but scattered power outages across the

island. Temporary outages were reported in Clinton, Langley, Freeland, Greenbank and Oak Harbor, according to Allison Stanford, Puget Sound Energy spokeswoman. One of the larger outages was just before

5 p.m. Friday on Highway 525 near Langley. An estimated 400 customers lost power after a tree limb fell onto a power line. Power was restored early Saturday morning, Stanford said. High winds that knocked down trees and lines also prompted road

closures across the South End. Access to Scatchet Head was limited to Cultus Bay Road after Bailey and Swede Hill roads were closed late Friday.

Ferries to be busy for holiday Washington State Ferries is advising travelers to plan for heavy traffic on ferry routes through the Thanksgiving weekend. Some routes will be using a revised travel schedule, so ferry riders should check ahead for times before heading to the terminal. The longest lines are expected on westbound sailings on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, Nov. 23, and eastbound sailings Friday morning Nov. 25. The Clinton-Mukilteo route will be on a holiday schedule Thursday, Nov. 24. The Point Defiance-

Tahlequah and SeattleBainbridge Island routes will also be on a holiday schedule; all other routes will be on the regular weekday schedule. WSF officials also said the schedule will be changed at the Coupeville (Keystone)-Port Townsend route for low tides, and additional sailings have been scheduled to make up for cancelled trips. Real-time ferry traffic information and wait times are available by signing up for routespecific email alerts and checking the Coupeville and Port Townsend terminal websites.

the Island County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that six additional car prowls and burglaries were reported late last week; all on Thursday, Nov. 10. Wallace said four incidents — two burglaries and two car prowls — were reported in the area around Newman Road and East Harbor Road. Two other incidents were reported in Clinton, and one outside of Langley. The four Freeland cases, Wallace said, “are being linked as related.” In the previous burglaries, the incidents mostly involved unlocked buildings and vehicles that were entered overnight. Thirteen incidents were reported over the past few weeks, including several on Newman Road. Wallace said reports had not yet been filed on the more recent cases, so details were lacking earlier this week. Law enforcement officials have advised residents to keep their cars and homes locked.

Letters Occupy movement

-FU T EFGFBU UIF EBSL GPSDF To the editor: Throughout history those with wealth and power have used their strength to dominate and oppress the rest of the populace. Many writers have proposed the existence of organizations — the Illuminati, Trilateral Commission, Masons or others — whose purpose is to carry out the goals of these powerful people. Whether it is literal or metaphorical, I think there truly is a “Dark Force in the world, intent on the enslavement of the masses. The Dark Force has historically consisted of the leadership of three groups: the wealthy (business/agricultural barons); those in political power; and the church. Ever since the time of the Egyptians these three groups have conspired — and sometimes fought each other — to enslave the people. Their methods were, respectively, to cultivate greed and competition, to instill the people with fear of each other and their neighbors, and (in the case of the church) to position themselves as the intermediary between individuals and a direct, personal relationship with the Creator. Right now the Dark Force is battling a “perfect storm consisting of a cross-cultural, worldwide failure of the greed-based capitalist economic system, a recognition of the failure of the democratic process to resist the corrupting power of the rich, the recognition of the people’s common interests worldwide, and the loss of influence of a centralized religion and a better understanding of our fundamental relationship with nature. The Occupy movement is a very positive manifestation of this “perfect storm. By participating and supporting this movement we are all uniting to defeat the efforts of the oppressor — the Dark Force, if you will — to enslave us. This is an epochal struggle and for the first time in millennia we have the combination of circumstances that might allow us to succeed. It is very important for us to work together now, because this advantage could be lost. Right now technology is on our side, or at least equally shared between us and them. (Anonymous and its loosely affiliated group of socially-conscious hackers claims that it can or has achieved “digital supremacy over the Dark Force.) But that could change — our access to the World Wide Web can be limited and controlled. In the U.S., we have a system of laws that, at least on paper, supports freedom of speech,

assembly and other freedoms essential to creating a social movement. This, too, could change. New laws can be passed (e.g. The USA Patriot Act), and the courts can rule against us (as in giving corporations the same rights as people). At 7 billion people, the population may have reached a number that makes it harder to dominate, but the global climate crisis, for example, could kill the oceans, flood the coasts and create desert wastelands that could easily bring the population back down to a more manageable number within a few generations. Join the movement. Stand in public. Demonstrate. Don’t be shy. Talk with your friends and relatives. Give them hope and help them overcome their apathy and depression. The Occupy movement is non-partisan, non-hierarchical and non-violent. It draws its power directly from the people, without intermediary structures. Let’s keep it that way. Do not allow any organization, however well-intentioned, to claim ownership of any part of the movement, because that will only weaken it. Do you remember the social justice movement of the ’60s? This is bigger and more important even than that. In those days, the effort was to change the existing system to

extend civil rights to a relatively small percentage of the population to whom these rights were denied. Today we recognize that we are all oppressed, and that this oppression is fundamental to the “corporatacracy we live in. The capitalist economic system is working against us and our political system has sold us out. We are the 99 percent! and other stakeholders that resulted in a consensus zoning overlay that was approved and adopted by the city council. Following that approval, even in the face of site design studies using port adopted technical standards (Bush Point and basic engineering criteria) port commissioners obstructed the implementation of that plan; resulting in the loss of an opportunity to increase people space on the waterfront with an interior new access road for boat trailers, reverting to the mule and wagon path of the early 1900s. Wow! And now the Port of South Whidbey desires the blessing of the city of Langley for, in my opinion, a costly and dysfunctional marina “master plan that requires complete deconstruction of phase one should a second phase become possible. So much for public process and best practices. Most citizens of South Whidbey want an expanded marina facility sooner rather than later; one that is incorporated into additional phases with sound planning not stumbling-forward expediency. What can be done now? The city informs the port of the two points of entry to port property of the new Wharf Street loop circulation plan. Period. No discussion; and then the city can give its blessing to the port’s “plan. RON KASPRISIN Langley

The teen driver in the crash that killed three South Whidbey men was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide Tuesday in Island County Superior Court. Kaylea F. Souza, 18, was arrested just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday. An Island County judge ordered her held on $150,000 bail Saturday pending charges from the accident. “Our hearts go out to the families, said Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks. “Their sudden and violent deaths have stunned the entire community, Banks said. “We are saddened and bewildered as we try to make sense of such a senseless act. According to the State Patrol, Souza was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu south on Wilkinson Road near Clinton when she lost control while passing another vehicle and hit a tree sometime near midnight Friday, Nov. 11. Three people died in the crash; Rob Knight, 22, Mick Poynter, 20, and Mack Porter, 19. The State Patrol

said speed and alcohol were factors in the accident. Two people in a passing car Kaylea Souza pulled Souza from the wreck but could not save the three passengers. Souza, a 2011 graduate of Bayview School and a Langley resident, was taken to Whidbey General Hospital for treatment after Saturday’s accident and was later booked into the Island County jail. According to documents filed in the case, Souza told a State Trooper in the emergency room at Whidbey General Hospital after the crash that she had consumed a 40-ounce container of Mickey’s beer earlier. She said she also drank Olde English, another brand of malt liquor, the night of the accident. The officer said Souza’s eyes were watery and bloodshot, and he could smell intoxicants on her breath.

from his patrol car. He emptied it and threw it down. “You couldn’t even really see the car in there, Volz said. The Washington State Patrol said Kaylea Souza, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu that went off the road right near the entranceway of the Wilkinson Trace subdivision. Three passengers — a 22-yearold Freeland man, a 20-year-old Langley man, and a 19-year-old man from Palmdale, Calif. — were killed at the scene. Authorities officially released the names of the victims on Tuesday, though their names quickly passed through the community this weekend; Rob Knight, Mick Poynter and Mack Porter. Poynter, 20, and Knight, 22, were well-known on South Whidbey. Porter, 19, was a relatively new transplant to the island. Poynter was a 2009 graduate of South Whidbey High School who played on the Falcon baseball team, and Knight was a star Falcon football player who was the Cascade Conference’s Most Valuable Player in 2006. His father Bruce helped coach the team. A candlelight service for the three young men was held Saturday night at the high school. State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary

Banks said blood toxicology results are pending. If Souza is convicted on the charges, Banks said, she faces a sentence of 51 months to 68 months. Souza remains in jail. If she is released on bail, she cannot drink alcohol, cannot leave the state, cannot drive under any circumstances and cannot refuse a drug test. Her arraignment on the charges is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 28. The accident was the deadliest on South Whidbey in five years. A firefighter who lives near the scene of the wreck near Surface and Wilkinson roads responded within a few minutes. By the time he arrived, the car was engulfed in flames, said Island County Fire District 3 Assistant Chief Paul Busch. “It’s probably one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen, Busch added. It was even more terrible than the devastating accident that killed two teenagers in Langley in March 2006. “Those who say speed doesn’t kill — take a look at this car, Busch said.

said it wasn’t known if they died in the crash, or were killed in the fire that quickly engulfed the car. Leary said speed and alcohol were factors in the accident, but he did not know if the passengers had been drinking. Souza had minor injuries, he said, and she walked to the ambulance that took her to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville for treatment. Leary said she was later arrested for investigation of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, and a blood draw was taken after her arrest. Souza was booked into Island County jail in Coupeville Saturday morning. According to the State Patrol, Souza was driving south on Wilkinson Road south toward Clinton, lost control while passing another car and struck a tree. At the accident scene, a deep gouge was left in a 2-foot-high embankment where the Malibu left the road, and plastic pieces of the car’s undercarriage were embedded in the upturned dirt. It looked like the car went into the air — there were no tire tracks in the soft earth — before it came down on the far side of Meander Lane and then hit the tree near the front right tire of the vehicle. When the car crashed into the tree, the impact snapped the footand-half-thick tree trunk near the top, which then fell onto the roof of

Classes at South Whidbey were on a normal schedule Monday, but four grief counselors were available to talk to students and staff throughout the day. Jones wins Cascade Conference volleyball Coach of the Year BY BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record

LANGLEY — There were coaches with better records. There were coaches with more playoff wins. Didn’t matter. After a meeting of Cascade Conference volleyball coaches, South Whidbey head coach Mandy Jones was voted the Coach of the Year. “I’m really honored and excited to have that reward, Jones said. “I think I needed it. I was feeling a little crushed about not getting my team to state. Jones led the Falcons to a 9-5 conference record that qualified her team for the Northwest District 1 tournament. At districts, the Falcons beat the Lynden Lions in five sets, were swept by the Burlington-Edison Tigers and lost to conference rival Archbishop Murphy in five sets. The loss to the AMHS Wildcats kept the Falcons from qualifying for the 2A state tournament, which South Whidbey has not played in since 2003. The Wildcats and coach Jeff Curtis finished conference play as the top 2A team, and the Steve Bain-led King’s Knights, a 1A school, went undefeated in the conference. “It was definitely a surprise, Jones said. “I thought either Steve from King’s or Jeff from Archbishop (Murphy) was going to get it ... who are both very well deserving. This was Jones’ fourth year as the Falcons’ head coach, and this was the first time she won the coaching award. One of her goals has been to build a program, from the middle school teams to a club volleyball team. South Whidbey signs coaches to one-year contracts, but South Whidbey athletic director Scott Mauk said he’d like to keep her

I cannot imagine having a volleyball program without Mandy. Mauk, who is in his first year as the athletic director, said his job is to support the coaches any way he can, though there hasn’t been much managing required. “She’s been really dedicated to volleyball in the community and really built the program that way, Mauk said. “As a high school coach she really relates to the girls well. Few of Jones’ Falcons have experienced as tenured a relationship as senior Linden Firethorne. Jones was her coach at Langley Middle School and through all four years of high school. “Mandy has made me a better player in every way, Firethorne said. “She has been my coach from the beginning and has pushed me and encouraged me to better myself every day. “I wouldn’t be the player I am

today if she hadn’t coached me for all those years. Firethorne signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Central Washington University on Nov. 9. The middle hitter’s agreement with the Division II team was the largest school that had snapped up one of Jones’s players. Firethorne credited Jones’ evolution as a coach for getting the team as many wins as it had. “She has become much more about the mental part of volleyball, Firethorne said. “When she was first my coach she was all business — and running, lots of running. She is still a tough coach but outgrew the young coach mentality and became an amazingly supportive, tough and wonderful coach. Jones took over a 5-9 team in the 2008 season and led the Falcons to an 8-6 record and a district tournament berth. The Falcons mirrored their success in 2009, making it to the third round of the district playoffs. Last season, South Whidbey slumped slightly to a 6-8 record, but qualified for districts before

To dress or to stuff our wonderful bird, that is the question I have a Thanksgiving question that some of our readers may be able to answer for me. The question is, do you dress a turkey with stuffing, or stuff a turkey with dressing? If it’s cooked outside the bird, is it called dressing, but if it’s cooked inside the bird, is it stuffing? Does it matter, as long as it’s on the Thanksgiving table somewhere? Neither of my grandmothers, nor my great-grandmother, nor my mother would have even considered cooking our

WHIDBEY RECIPES Margaret Walton

Thanksgiving turkey without cramming it with stuffing first. Although there may have been one or two small variations or additions to the stuffing itself, cooking it in the bird was mandatory. At some point, and my recollection is that it was sometime in the mid-’60s, we began hearing and reading about the dangers of undercooked stuffing, or stuffing that sat too long in the bird before cooking, and suggestions were made that it was better to cook it separately, leaving it out of the bird entirely. My grandmothers would have been aghast, and I think most of the men in my large and quarrelsome family would have rebelled at the idea of a Thanksgiving turkey sans stuffing, even if there was oven-baked dressing served on the side. During the past few years, deep frying the festive bird became popular and many of us now have turkeyfrying apparatuses sitting somewhere in the garage

or shed gathering cobwebs. This method automatically precluded stuffing the bird first, thus the dressing (or is it stuffing?) necessarily had to be baked and served separately. While I do like deep-fried turkey, it somehow just doesn’t seem like Thanksgiving to me without a turkey in the oven, so we save the deep fryer for other occasions now. For decades, stuffing was most often made of dried bread cubes, chopped celery and onion, chicken or turkey broth and a variety of herbs. Some folks added eggs; others not. I don’t know whether to credit James Beard or Julia Child, but fancying up stuffing suddenly became fashionable, leading to such exotic delights as Oyster Stuffing, Wild Rice and Wild Mushroom Stuffing, Cornbread With Green Chilies Stuffing, Cornbread and Sausage Stuffing, Italian Stuffing With Pine Nuts, Rosemary and Basil,

to name only a few in my “Stuffing recipe file. In other words, stuffing became as varied as the people who were concocting it, leading to a new problem; which stuffing to use this year. There is an easy answer to that question, however; this year I’ll make two; one to stuff in the bird, the other to serve on the side. But, whether it’s stuffing or dressing, just be sure it’s there, because if it’s Thanksgiving, everyone is looking forward to it.

RECIPES I love cornbread and have since childhood, so it’s no surprise that cornbread stuffing is at the top of my list now. Make the buttermilk corn bread a day or two ahead and it’ll be just right to use for stuffing on turkey day. Here’s the recipe for the cornbread, followed by a kicked up stuffing recipe.

Note: If you’re using this for stuffing, cover it tightly

Add all the chilies and sautÊ until beginning to soften (about 8 min.). Stir in one pkg. of the corn and the green onions. Transfer to a large bowl; mix in cilantro. Coarsely crumble the corn bread into the vegetable mixture, tossing lightly to blend. In a food processor, blend the second pkg. of corn with the eggs, sugar, salt and pepper, processing to a coarse puree. Stir this into the stuffing mixture. If you’re going to bake this stuffing, or part of it, inside the bird, fill neck and main cavities of the bird with the stuffing (don’t forget to lightly season the cavities with salt and freshly ground pepper first) and roast the bird as you normally would. For remaining stuffing, generously butter a baking dish and spoon mixture into the dish and cover with buttered foil (butter side down). Bake this stuffing alongside the turkey until heated through (about 25 min.), then uncover and bake until the top of the stuffing is slightly crisp and golden (probably about 15 min. more).

The thought also occurred to Susannah Rose Woods, artistic director for Whidbey Children’s Theater, when someone floated the idea of producing “Little Women, The Broadway Musical.” But Woods said once she read the script and heard the music for the play, she let go of her previous attachment to the novel and let herself feel the story in a new way; more intensely because of the music that accompanies the familiar hills and valleys of the story. “I think music has the capacity to create a deeper, emotional landscape. I think I feel the story more,” Woods said. The show opens with the Third Street Players at

7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 and runs through Dec. 4 on the Martha Murphy Mainstage in Langley. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 semiautobiographical novel, it focuses on the four March sisters — brassy, tomboylike, aspiring writer Jo, romantic Meg, pretentious Amy, and kind-hearted Beth. The girls live with their mother, the beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Mass., while the family patriarch is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. The musical is strung together with vignettes and songs in which the character’s lives unfold, and with the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio and stages with her sisters. Comedian brings weapon of laughter to war zones BY PATRICIA DUFF South Whidbey Record

Running to a helicopter while being shot at is tricky. It’s even trickier when one of the kids calls at that very moment and tells you somebody ate all the Cheez-Its, and please remember to buy more. This is one of the stories comedian Jennifer Rawlings tells in her show “I Only Smoke in Warzones, A Collection of True Stories from the Battlefield (Both at Home and Abroad).” Rawlings comes to Whidbey Island Center for the Arts in Langley with her show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18. “I love to make people laugh and when I think about soldiers, my feeling is that these young men and women leave their homes and families for year-long deployments and risk their lives every single day,” Rawlings said. “I can leave my family for a couple of weeks at a time to go tell jokes.” Indeed, the Los Angeles mother of five has been traveling as a USO performer for about 11 years. She has performed in more than 300 military shows in Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, United Arab Emirates, Djibouti, Bahrain, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan,

Comedian Jennifer Rawlings poses with soldiers during a USO tour. Kuwait, Korea, Kwajelean, Guam, Japan, Iceland and other countries. The statuesque, striking blonde has a girl-next-door presence with a big smile that makes her well-suited to the task of bringing a bit of sunny laughter to a monotone war zone. Her solo performance reflects the scrapbook of her life, as she weaves together stories about family, her visits to battlefields and her contemplations on the human experience for a heartfelt and funny tapestry of emotional life.

This funny-girl took a roundabout route to the USO stage. Rawlings grew up in Salina, Kansas, went to college to study biology and decided to become a stand-up comedian instead. She’s carved out a ubiquitous career in comedy and has made a name for herself on the comedy circuit, including stints on television on Comedy Central, CMT, PBS, FOX, VH1, A&E and “The Joy Behar Show.” When she’s not performing on the front lines for soldiers, she

has shared the stage with Faith Hill, the late George Carlin and the vice president of the United States, and is a popular keynote speaker around the country. But although she works to make the troops laugh, Rawlings is not immune to the effects of war that she has seen. Influenced by her experiences in the “heart of darkness,” she was moved to create a documentary film based on the footage she shot during a trip to Bosnia. “Forgotten Voices: Women in Bosnia” is Rawlings’ attempt to “give voice to the forgotten victims of war,” in this case, several women who survived the war in Bosnia. Rawlings is also the author of a children’s book and numerous magazine articles, as well as writing a popular weekly blog for the magazine Hybrid Mom. She is a featured writer in the book: “I Killed: Road Stories from America’s Top Comedians.” Such a busy mother of a big brood certainly begs the question that she’s asked often: “Who takes care of the kids?” Her husband, whom she calls “amazing,” has been holding down the fort and looking after the kids while mom is away since her youngest was 2. “My kids are all teenagers now, the youngest is 13 ... hence the need

to go on the road,” she jokes. That’s her M.O. She uses her life to create an act that relates to everyone else’s life, whether they’re in the military or not. People from all walks of life can relate, she said, though she does tailor a certain portion of the act for military folks when she goes on the USO tours. She calls laughter the great peacemaker. “I do not have any political agenda when I do a show,” Rawlings said. “Both liberals and conservatives love my show because it’s about people not politics. I just share my personal experiences and people can attribute whatever they want to the story.” In addition to cooking, cleaning, pleading with her kids to do homework, nagging her husband, and telling jokes at theaters and comedy clubs around the globe, Rawlings is currently at work on a new book. Visit her website at www.jennifer rawlings.com to find out more. Tickets range from $18 to $22 and are available at the WICA box office 221-8268 or 800-638-7631, or visit www.WICAonline.com. WICA partners with Military Merits and extends discounts to people in uniform, including family members, retirees and other defense workers.

young adult cast Woods said she found musical actors who have reached beyond her expectations. “I looked for the same qualities I always do: a sense of wonder, professionalism, a willingness to play, to be real, to be silly, to show up and really be present; to have trust and chemistry, she said. “At the end of the day, every play needs that. ‘Little Women’ is no more or less difficult to cast than Hamlet or King Lear, especially in that the characters are wellloved, well-known. The play goes through a condensed version of Alcott’s whirlwind novel in which the characters experience all of the life, love, death, births, weddings, art and writing of the original story. Her method, she said, is to give the actors the foundation of the history and the place, and then create a good atmosphere for the intense ride. “Mostly I try and create a soft safety net for all the actors, so they can take risks and go deeper. And I wanted the actors to be as authentic

84' PGGJDJBMT UP UBML BCPVU GFSSZ JTTVFT Officials from Washington State Ferries will visit Whidbey Island as part of a series of meetings planned for November and December. Topics include an update on new vessels, upcoming terminal construction projects, and the governor’s Connecting Washington Task Force. “I’m looking forward to this round of commu-

nity meetings, said David Moseley, WSF assistant secretary. “The upcoming legislative session will be critical for state transportation. I encourage customers to attend the meetings so we can discuss important issues and concerns. Moseley will talk about state and route-specific issues during the meetings, and there will also be a question-and-answer

LID CONTINUED FROM A1

session. The meeting for Whidbey ferry riders is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland. The Coupeville (Keystone)-Port Townsend route will be discussed from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend.

district consultant Gary Hess recounted a recent conference that included representatives from state and federal agencies that offer grants and loans for infrastructure projects. District officials had earlier been worried that repealing the LID resolution would limit their ability to garner more money for the sewer project in the future. But Hess said that wasn’t

%($87,)8/ 3($&2&. +2/,'$< '(&25

the case. Hess said loans were available for commercial-only sewer projects, and grants could be pursued to cover 110 percent of the costs of sewers for existing residential areas. Some federal grants will be off the table until 2014, he added. Hess said they asked officials at the conference if canceling the LID resolution would hurt the district’s chances at getting grants. “They said that wouldn’t have any effect on any of their programs at this time, Hess said. Loans would be a different story, he added. “That would affect it, because we don’t have debt capacity, Hess said. With that worry out of the

way, commissioners voted to rescind the LID resolution. It was the first of several steps taken Monday in deference to the incoming board. Commissioner Eric Hansen suggested the board put off hiring a new attorney — current counsel Al Hendricks wants to retire soon — until the new commissioners are seated. Others agreed. “Anything we can put off until the new commissioners come on line is probably a good idea, Knickerbocker said. The board also deferred consideration of the 2012 budget for capital improvements for the same reason. “Let them figure priorities and such, Knickerbocker said.
