Books by the Way: 1973 to 2011

A bookstore closes, and an era ends By LESLIE BROWN Staff Writer

Books by the Way has had many incarnations over the years, opening first in the Old Fuller Store at Center and then moving into town, where it claimed at least four locations. Now, the 38-year-old business, the longest-running bookstore on Vashon, is about to shutter its doors for good. And owner Jenni Wilke, appropriately, it seems, will hold a wake to mark the small shop’s closure. “It’ll be an opportunity for people to celebrate the bookstore with stories and memories, the same way you’d celebrate a life,” she said. “But we also realize there will be some sadness.” Indeed, last week, as books, discounted 45 percent, flew out of the store, one customer after another noted how sorry he or she was to see the Island institution close. “It’s been around forever,” said Joanne Calhoun. “I will miss it.” “It’s heartbreaking,” another woman said as she placed 11 books on the counter. “I’ve been a loyal customer for 10 years.” She patted Wilke’s dog Millie on the head and then gave the bookseller a hug.

County plans to cut down trees to save a forest By LESLIE BROWN Staff Writer

Jenni Wilke sells a stack of books to a longtime customer. Below, a man peruses the shelves, looking for bargains. “It’s been such a great place to hang out,” she told Wilke. And so it’s gone for the last couple of weeks, as Wilke upped her discounts, finally scrawling on a sandwichboard sign on the sidewalk “closing mid-November.” Some have come into the store asking Wilke who they’ll now turn to for book suggestions. Others have shed tears. Several, Wilke said, apologized

for not buying more books. But Wilke, who bought the store four years ago with her husband Dave, doesn’t blame Vashon for the shop’s closure. As her husband put it, “a perfect storm” hit the bookstore during their brief tenure as owners — a fateful combination of economic hardship, the ongoing popularity of online SEE BOOKSTORE, 20

King County hopes to undertake its largest thinning operation to date at Island Center Forest, removing dying alders and tightly packed Douglas firs in an area comprising nearly 100 acres of the popular woodland. Should the county move forward on the plan, the operation would take place in two different sections of the 363-acre forest — a 90-acre tract and a 33-acre area. The county is holding a public meeting to discuss its plans Tuesday evening at the Land Trust Building. Neither site, however, would be clearcut under the county’s plan, according to Bill Loeber, the county’s forester. The logging operations would be ecological in nature, he said, geared to improving forest health by selectively thinning in stands that are either too dense or comprised of trees that are dying and ready to topple. “I think of these things as being like a restoration project,” Loeber said. David Warren, who heads the Vashon Forest Stewards and who has played an active role in Island Center Forest’s management, concurred. “There’s this idea that if you just leave the forest alone, it’ll grow back to this natural forest,” he said. Island Center Forest, however, “is at a point where it needs some loving care.” Much of Island Center Forest was owned by the state Department of Natural Resources, which managed the site commercially for decades, using funds from its management to SEE FOREST, PAGE 18

Islanders rally to save Vashon’s skatepark By NATALIE JOHNSON Staff Writer

Allison Reid Photo

The BARC skatepark has been used by over 300 kids this year.

When Allison Reid’s 9-year-old son started skateboarding at BARC this summer, she had some reservations. “I thought it was just for teens,” she said. “I didn’t even know it was supervised.” Now, Reid is fighting to make sure the skatepark stays open. “It’s not at all what I have always thought it was. … It’s fabulous for him,” she said. “We go all the time, and I want to help.” Last month, parents learned the indoor skatepark, open five days a week at the Burton Adventure

Recreation Center (BARC), was on an unsustainable path. The park district program, which costs about $20,000 a year to operate, has barely broken even in past years, despite yearly help in the form of a $3,500 grant by the Development of Island Teens (DOIT). Last year, the skatepark came up $800 short. This year, the park district lowered admission to the park in an attempt to draw more skateboarders, inline skaters and scooter riders and make the program accessible to a wider number of people. “People were saying they couldn’t afford it,” said Susan McCabe, the park district’s program coordinator. Attendance dropped slightly, however. And now, SEE SKATEPARK, 19

A King County Superior Court judge issued a preliminary injunction last week supporting the Vashon Park District’s claim that the Rosser family doesn’t own the road that leads to their home, according to David Hackett, a park district commissioner who attended the hearing. Judge Laura Gene Middaugh ruled that the Rosser family has an easement on the 100-foot road that connects their property to Vashon Highway, but the road itself, the judge said, is owned by the Vashon Island School District. What’s more, the judge said, the Rossers don’t own an easement on a small swath of property on the eastern edge of the Vashon Park District’s fields project that abuts the Rosser property — again, refuting a claim the Rosser family has made. Hackett, a lawyer, said the judge’s preliminary injunction will be in place until the case goes to trial, which is scheduled for 2013. According to Hackett, the judge issued the ruling in the park district’s favor based on documents from 1912 as well as property deeds filed with King County. He expects that the ruling will ultimately lead to a permanent injunction.

“Once a court enters a preliminary injunction against you, that’s pretty much it, he said. The ruling was issued from the bench last Tuesday afternoon after an hourlong hearing in a Seattle courtroom. Gay and her mother Margaret Rosser were at the hearing, as well as about a dozen Islanders who were there in support of the longtime Island family. The Rossers were not represented by a lawyer. Gay Rosser, reached last week, took issue with the process, contending that the judge didn’t have time to look at some of the extensive paperwork she’s amassed. “It was the judge’s decision, she said. “I was a bit sorry our time was limited. She added that she’s still awaiting a written version of the preliminary injunction, which is to be drafted by the park district’s lawyer. “I don’t know what it entails until I get the information in writing, she said. The Rossers’ family home, initially owned by Margaret and her late husband Leon and now owned by Gay, sits on a five-acre parcel on the eastern edge of the park district’s sports field project. The park district is leasing the adjacent 10-acre site on Vashon Highway, where the Harbor School is located, from the school district. A dispute over the owner-

ship of the two parcels on the perimeter of the school district’s property began a few years ago, when the park district announced its plans to construct a $1.5 million sports fields complex at the site. The dispute has been acrimonious at times. The park district recently obtained a temporary restraining order against Gay Rosser after park district officials claimed she parked a truck on the road leading to her home, obstructing a heavyequipment operator from gaining access to the site. Hackett said he’s glad that the park district secured a preliminary injunction but said he’s frustrated by the way the dispute has played out. He said the park district will likely seek a summary judgment — a ruling in the park district’s favor based on briefs, not a trial. “I’m frankly disappointed that we had to spend so long and go through so much trouble to get to a point that was certainly obvious to me three or four years ago, he said. Gay Rosser, for her part, said she believes Hackett and other members of the park district board have treated her and her mother unfairly and still hopes they’ll prevail if the case ends up in court. “I think it’s extremely unfortunate how this was handled, she said.

American Hero Quilts logs a landmark in project for wounded vets A fundraiser will take place this weekend By SUSAN RIEMER Staff Writer

Staff Sgt. J.B. was on patrol in Iraq one night last summer searching for a rocket the insurgents had fired. Leery of cobras and keeping an eye out for the venomous snakes, he fell down a ravine, badly injuring his knee. In early September, J.B. (who asked that his full name not be used) returned to the United States because of that injury and an earlier one that had left him with several bone chips in his neck and in considerable pain. He did not return to his family in Idaho, however, but to the Warrior Transition Battalion (WTB) at Joint Base LewisMcChord near Tacoma, where he expects to live until January. Upon arriving, he received a red, white

and blue quilt from the Vashon-based American Hero Quilts project. “It’s really nice, he said recently. “The rooms are a little bland. I have mine spread over my bed — it’s a nice splash of color. To be sent to the WTB, a soldier must have an injury or illness that Army medical officials deem will take six months or more of complex medical care to heal. J.B. is just one of 500 servicemen and women living there, coping with severe health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and orthopedic injuries. Some stay for years. Last week Sue Nebeker, the force behind American Hero Quilts, welcomed J.B. to her Maury Island home and quilt studio, along with Amin Arreola, the outreach program coordinator of the Soldier and Family Assistance Center. They were there to pick up 100 of the colorful quilts and take them back to give to soldiers arriving at the WTB.

he said. “We go about the business of healing up what needs to be healed. For Nebeker, who has given over the lower floor of her home to the project all these years, it is an honor to have her quilts covering the men and women there.

“That’s very moving to me, she said. “That was the point of starting the organization: that we would have a chance to be part of helping people heal and let them know we appreciate them. Nebeker started out in 2004 by delivering 100 quilts to Madigan Army Hospital at Fort Lewis, and as wars have raged in Afghanistan and Iraq, Nebeker, her one part-time employee Su DeWalt and numerous project volunteers have sewn, delivered and shipped more than 10,000 quilts to wounded men and women returning to the United States. Nebeker and DeWalt both think of the quilts as hugs that enfold each recipient. Nebeker could not have imagined the magnitude of the project seven years ago. Ten thousand is a number, she said, that makes her “incredibly sad. “I know the people we’re covering have the most incredible journey ahead 4503: $0/5*/6&4 /&95 1"(&

of them, not just the injury, but the journey ahead, the PTSD, the healing of their wounds, the trying to come back and have a normal life. I don’t think it’s very easy given the things they have seen. American Hero Quilts, each one hand sewn and labelled with the words, “You are our hero. Thank you, go not just to the WTB, but to a military hospital in Afghanistan as well. Between the two destinations, roughly 250 quilts pass through Nebeker’s hands each month. With the simplest of quilts taking roughly 45 hours to create and more elaborate ones 100 hours, Nebeker and DeWalt could not do this alone. “Without the quilt guild on Vashon, we could not keep going, Nebeker said. “They have cut hundreds of yards of fabric, sewn in

thousands of bindings and made countless quilt tops and quilts. The project has volunteers in each of the 50 states; several women at the Washington Correctional Center for Women in Purdy also participate, Nebeker said. It is a way for the women to gain skills, benefit others and acquire a sense of accomplishment. No matter who makes the quilts, Nebeker sets the bar high. “The quilts are for heroes, she said, “and we make that very clear. Clark Nebeker, Sue’s husband, recently calculated some of the numbers behind the 10,000 figure. Each quilt weighs about 4 pounds, meaning 40,000 pounds of quilts have been delivered. The fabric and batting for one quilt can easily cost $300, which, for

888 7"4)0/#&"$)$0.#&3 $0.

10,000 quilts, comes to $3 million. As preparations are being made to bring troops home from Iraq, Sue Nebeker looks ahead. She would like the troops to come home from Afghanistan, she said, and she would like to do more with Vietnam vets. “In my travels, I have met Vietnam vets who I have thought needed quilts, she said. When that has happened, she and DeWalt have sent them a quilt with a note thanking them for their service and apologizing that it has taken so long to express such gratitude. She has sent

off roughly 100 of these quilts in the last year. “There is still so much pain out there, she said. That is true for those returning now, she noted. “I don’t think people realize how many wounded there are and the help they will need, she said. “I am not sure why that isn’t the first thing in the newspaper and on TV everyday. For Nebeker, there is no clear end in sight for her work yet. “I will stop when my body wears out or when we have our people home, and the people we’ve needed to hug, we’ve hugged, she said.

American Hero Quilts will host a fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the former VFW Hall, now Vashon Island Books. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. there will be an English tea, and from 7 to 9 p.m. there will be cocktails, appetizers and a silent auction. Sue Nebeker noted the quilt project needs support this year more than ever before. Tickets, $20 and $25, are available at Vashon Bookshop.

be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at McMurray Middle School. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The Ecology Department’s cleanup plan will entail neighborhood-by-neighborhood sampling in Ruston, parts of Tacoma, University Place, Maury Island and southern Vashon Island — those areas considered most contaminated within the 1,000-acre Tacoma Smelter Plume, the state’s largest contaminated site. The sampling will be voluntary, as will any remediation the state recommends, said Hannah Aoyagi, an

All told, state officials said, there are approximately 2,400 residences on Maury, in the Burton area and on Vashon Island south of S.W. 264th Street that fall within the area of greatest concern. State funding for the massive cleanup comes from a settlement Asarco made when it filed for bankruptcy in 2005. EDITORIAL

Town safety is a community project

Putting an end to those anonymous online postings

Implementing elegant solutions to thorny problems is a Vashon talent. Little wonder, then, that a dedicated group of Islanders is taking steps to slow teen alcohol and drug use by doing something simple — changing the physical environment that enables the activity. The Vashon Alliance to Reduce Substance Abuse (VARSA) has spent the last year identifying problem spots where drug paraphernalia and heaps of alcohol containers collect regularly. Plans are now afoot to widen paths, light problem spots and clear brush from parking lots. A recent Beachcomber issue described the problems people face when their properties become hangouts for drug dealing and teen drinking. This can change, and property owners who want to increase safety and reduce trash are working with VARSA and a specially trained local architect to make that change. Frankly, when I first heard about this effort, I had visions of surveillance cameras following sweeping searchlights. No one wants to see Vashon cleared and halogen-lit from dusk to dawn, resulting in a dreary sci-fi landscape devoid of

Over the last few years, as The Beachcomber’s website has garnered more attention, some readers have raised concerns about one issue in particular — the fact that we allow visitors to vashonbeachcomber.com to post anonymous comments. The policy has led to some unpleasant and mean-spirited postings. It’s also put a spotlight on a seeming inconsistency at the paper: We don’t print anonymous letters, but we’ve allowed our website, vashonbeachcomber.com, to become a place where people can hide their identity while occasionally taking shots at one another. Starting Nov. 17, that policy will change. People will be able to comment only by using their Facebook accounts, which means people’s names, often even their photographs, will now be linked to the statements they post. The Beachcomber is not alone in making this shift. Several newspapers, equally troubled by this trend, are beginning to turn to Facebook to power their website commenting. The Los Angeles Times, for instance, recently began using Facebook Comments. According to a story about the shift on Poynter.org, a news industry website, the LA Times continues to see spirited discourse and disagreement among those who post comments. But the discourse is at a much higher level, and commentators are generally well-mannered and on-topic. This new approach won’t be perfect. People who don’t have a Facebook account won’t be able to participate in online discussions. And some will likely find a way around our new policy, creating Facebook accounts using pseudonyms. Still, we’re proud to be in the vanguard of this movement. It shows we’re listening to our readers and responding. It also places us more deeply and fully into the powerful world of social media and the force currently driving that world; by using Facebook Comments, we’re embracing a social medium that now has 800 million users worldwide. And for those of you who have not chosen to create a Facebook account, remember that we will continue to run letters to the editor, a lively and robust part of our paper every week. So please continue to be a part of the discussion. Whether online or in print, your comments are part of an important community dialogue that enlivens and enriches Vashon’s civic life.

pedestrians. But when fights, loud music and drug transactions are the nighttime norm at the Village Green, people living in the neighborhood are understandably upset. When drug paraphernalia appears on the ground behind a preschool, we are all upset. I feel it is very important that VARSA team up with all the involved property owners, making no unilateral changes and seeking solutions that meet the VARSA goals and work for property owners too. So far this has been true. I know VARSA reached out to the Village Green neighbors who might be affected by lights in the park, and they are working together. I talked with another property owner at KVI Beach. She had contacted VARSA to ask that no blackberries be cut on her bank, and suggested appropriate areas

Road safety

Pedestrians are required UP NPWF GPS DBST I was very surprised to read the column (“Some basic precautions can make the roads safe for everyone) in last week’s Beachcomber to which an entire half-page was granted. My surprise was due to the fact that the article is in direct contradiction to Washington State Law. Washington RCW 46.61.250, “Pedestrians on roadways, clearly states that pedestrians are to move off the roadway for approaching vehicles. Here is the statement directly from the RCW: “Where sidewalks are not provided any pedestrian walking or otherwise moving along and upon a highway shall, when practicable,

walk or move only on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic which may approach from the opposite direction and upon meeting an oncoming vehicle shall move clear of the roadway. — Bill Lyell

on which to focus. This spirit of collaboration is reassuring, and I think the results will be worth the effort. I encourage VARSA to continue to work carefully with those Islanders whose properties might be affected by its efforts. The project comes at an important time in our community’s life. Recent statistics show that our teen substance abuse rates are above the state average, a trend I find troubling. Drinking can devastate young people and lead to crippling depression. With our teen use rates well above average, we need to take steps to protect our young people and support them to make good decisions. I applaud the VARSA efforts. They are working smart, partnering with affected property owners, and making subtle but effective improvements to discourage the abuse of both our human resources and our commons. As Ed Swan, who has worked with VARSA on the project, pointed out in The Beachcomber, sometimes the solution is as simple as replacing a broken light bulb. — Jean Bosch is real estate agent active in civic affairs on Vashon.

Vashon Island Community Ballet is a non-profit organization. We are the same board that organized and supported Vashon

Junior Civic Ballet. We are the same parents and volunteers who fundraised by selling flowers and concessions during shows and washing cars. We painted the props and backdrops, baked the refreshments, wrapped the roses, shook the snow machine and pinned the costumes. We are the support system for these shows and for these dancers. We pay the artistic director a stipend for each show. Betsy Frazee voluntarily resigned from our board and stated she would never work with us. We moved forward for the benefit of the kids and the program and hired a new artistic director. We changed our name at the recommendation of Vashon Park District staff and signed a contract that clearly stated VPD would hold our funds and distribute them per our request. Park district commissioners believe they can interpret the law in a way that allows VPD to ignore our contract, take those funds and create a new entity with them. We believe VPD is in breach of contract. Before the end of our contract, we requested arbitration with VPD. They did not respond. The commissioners have ignored our requests to meet with them. VPD has put this board of volunteers through an emotional roller coaster and has refused to acknowledge us as a separate legal

entity. Their attempt to placate our former artistic director has caused damage to our reputation and harm to our program. We do not want to fight with VPD or Betsy Frazee. We only want to continue to provide a top-notch free ballet program to the youth dancers on Vashon. We are a hard-working volunteer board who has no personal agenda here except to put on a spectacular show for these kids.

You sold us our place over 20 years ago. We thought that by now we’d have our house almost paid for, but we refinanced about five years ago for our son’s college money and then in 2009 my husband got laid off. He finally got a job but it doesn’t pay as well as the other one did. We were just getting by when I lost my job so now we can’t make our mortgage payments. We’ve tried everything. We cut back on all our expenses, sold stuff, even borrowed a little from my folks. We’ve run out of options. What should we do now?

A:

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. You’re not alone, I’m sure you know. Many people are struggling just to get by and are close to losing their homes. There is a new law in Washington that took effect in July. It mandates that lenders negotiate with borrowers and offer options and solutions. The law created real estate counselors who can go over your situation and try to renegotiate your mortgage so that you can afford the payments.

Honoring veterans: Learn about Women in Vietnam Anthropologist Marianne Jacobs will present the dramatic saga of American service women in Vietnam at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Land Trust Building. Jacobs served a year of duty as a nurse in Vietnam from 1970 through 1971. When her tour was over she returned to a country ambivalent at best about the divisive war. Overlooked and not honored as she imagined, Jacobs began her studies into anthropology. Jacobs’ insights into human nature inspired her to become a chronicler of the women who served in Vietnam. An accurate record of American women’s service in the Vietnam War did not

exist until women like Jacobs wrote the history themselves. It’s been estimated that there were around 6,250 nurses in the war. These all-volunteer women served in Vietnam to help soldiers. American nurses spent countless hours at e-vac hospitals to honor their commitment. For much of Jacobs’ life, it has been her mission to share the story of these nurses. Additionally, in honor of Veterans Day, the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Museum will be open for the showing of the exhibit, “Home of Record: Vashon and the Vietnam War.

A documentary lifts a veil on a generation of abuse “A Lot Like You, which plays Thursday night, has opened the door to conversations By LESLIE BROWN Staff Writer

hen Seattle activist Eliaichi Kimaro first approached Vashon film editor Eric Frith about the documentary she hoped to make, she had in mind a fairly straightforward biographical story — one that explored Tanzania, her father’s tribal culture and the role of the World Bank in Africa. But what unfolded over the course of years of work, much of it in Frith’s small studio behind his house on the west side of Vashon, was an intensely emotional exploration not only into Kimaro’s cultural heritage but also her past, her family’s past and a set of family secrets that -FTMJF #SPXO 4UBGG 1IPUP had been tightly held for decades. signed up for a film editing class he was teaching at 911 Media Arts. Frith, an accomplished editor and producer, was taken by her footage, by what he called Kimaro’s “unique lens. The partnership that ensued resulted in a project that now has a number of Vashon connections. Jeff Hoyt, known by many Islanders as lead writer for the Church of Great Rain, acted as a voice coach for Kimaro. Droge’s wife, Elaine Summers, was the executive music producer and another set of eyes throughout the making of the documentary. Terri Bassett, a designer, animator and videographer, handled the film’s graphic designs and animation, and Marc Brown was the film’s colorist. Other Islanders played a role, including James Culbertson, Noah Dolan, Richard McFarland and Melissa Curtin. Kimaro, Frith and Droge said they’re pleased with the results of their hard work — not only because they think they’ve made a fine documentary but because of the impact it’s already beginning to have. The film is being shown all over, including a recent showing to members of the Chagga community who live in Philadelphia. Educators are asking for a version that could work in a school setting. Kimaro was recently the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for the Washington Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “Eli’s courage and vulnerability are already helping a lot of people, said Frith. “The conversations we’ve heard after the film are what we were hoping for. We’re seeing it happening. Kimaro, for her part, said the experience of showing the film to audiences across the country has been surreal. People don’t come up to her afterwards and say, “That was an awesome film, she said. They hug her for 20 seconds or more, sometimes in tears. “There’s the feeling of being seen. Really, really seen. And for me, there’s something very liberating about that, she said. “There’s a veil that’s lifted. And it opens the door to a deeper and more meaningful conversation. “A Lot Like Me will play at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Vashon Theatre as a fundraiser for the DoVE Project, Vashon’s antidomestic violence program. Tickets are $10. A reception, with wine and appetizers, will begin at 6:45 at Movie Magic; tickets for the reception are $20 and are available at Vashon Youth & Family Services. Sponsorships, at $100 and $250, are also available. Call Allison Shirk at 734-6521 for sponsorship information.

Loriah Challman and Mara Burns, during a rehearsal. “The Laramie Project will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 11, 12, 18, and 19, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. The matinee is a benefit for the Vashon Youth & Family Services program serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people and will include a panel discussion. Tickets are $5 for each show, with an additional donation requested for VYFS at the matinee. Tickets are available at the high school office, at the door and Books by the Way.

This weekend and next, theater students at Vashon High School will perform “The Laramie Project,â€? a powerful play with an important message. “The Laramie Project,â€? a documentary-style play by MoisĂŠs Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, won immediate acclaim when it premiered in 2000. Since then, it has been performed all over the world and made into a film. Based on interviews, transcripts and news stories, the play tells the painful story of how the murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard affected the town of Laramie, Wyo., where the hate crime took place in 1998. According to theater teacher Stephen Floyd, who is directing the performance, the play is as timely as ever. “One reason we have chosen to do this play is the very real presence of homophobia, and really any form of prejudice, in our culture and how that type of prejudice hurts all of us,â€? Floyd wrote in an email about the play. “The play is dedicated not only to the memory of Matthew Shepard, but also other LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) individuals who have been murdered in the United States over the past few decades.â€? This is the second time the play has been presented on the Island. In 2004, Islanders Maryam and George Steffen produced a production of the show directed by their son Eli Steffen. Floyd said his students chose to perform “The Laramie Projectâ€? from among several other options presented to

them at the start of the school year. And in the midst of rehearsals, Floyd checked in with his students by giving them an assignment to write a short paragraph that expressed their feelings about working on the play. The completed assignments are filled with earnest insights. “Doing this play has made me realize that the arts can make a difference, not just in the lives of us kids, but in the world, wrote Hailey Quackenbush. “People may not realize it, but there is still lots of bullying and hate going around in schools and towns, wrote Peri Roberts. “It isn’t a traditional play, more like a living newspaper. The words we say are the words people actually said. “Homophobia isn’t something that is easily eradicated from the culture, and that’s why this play is still applicable, wrote Anna Rose Warren. “It’s still an issue, and Matthew’s story should still be told. — Elizabeth Shepherd

The Greta Matassa Quartet will bring hot jazz to Island jazz aficionados on Saturday, in the finale to Vashon Allied Arts’ Panache Jazz Series. Matassa, who has been touted as “a marvel of virtuosity by the Los Angeles Times, will be joined onstage by well-known Northwest players, including pianist Darin Clendenin, bassist Clipper Anderson and percussionist Mark Ivester. Matassa will croon songs from her latest album, “I Wanna Be Loved, and take listener requests. “I like the spontaneity of having something thrown at me, someone saying, ‘here, field this, and see what you can do with it,’ she said. A Northwest native, Matassa started developing her jazz chops early, singing along to recordings by Fred Astaire, Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. She has performed with top players, including Michael Powers and Randy Halberstadt, and recently played her first gig in New York City at a sold-out show at Dizzy’s Club. In addition to touring, Matassa teaches vocal jazz techniques. The show takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Blue Heron. Pirates miss state by a hair Football season closes with exciting last game Vashon’s final football game was an exhilarating, back-and-forth contest that wasn’t decided until the last play, when Vashon lost 40-38 to Friday Harbor. Friday Harbor scored on their first play. Garrett Starr then ran Friday Harbor’s kickoff back for a touchdown, and the Pirates were up 8-6. Friday Harbor was able to score again, going ahead 14-8. The Pirates got the ball and executed a touchdown drive with strong runs from Nick Betz and passes to Ezra Lacina and Starr, tying the score at 14-14. Evan Anderson recovered a Friday Harbor fumble that ended with a touchdown drive. The second half started with three un-

answered touchdowns by Friday Harbor, which went ahead 34-20. The Pirates came back and scored with a 50-yard pass play to Starr. Again Friday Harbor answered with a touchdown to lead 40-26. Refusing to give up, the Pirates scored early in the fourth quarter bringing the score to 40-32. The Pirates attempted an onside kick, which was successfully recovered by Owen Brenno, leading to a Pirate touchdown and the final 40-38 score. The close game marked the end of the season and the final game for seniors Elliott Ellingsen, Jacob Ludberg and Kevin Thomas. — Brian Brenno

The Vashon High School volleyball team, after winning the league championship for the first time in the team’s history and moving on the state playoffs, didn’t get the fairy tale ending they were hoping for. The girls, who entered playoffs with a perfect league record, just missed qualifying for the state competition when they lost their final playoff match by two points. The Pirates lost a close and hard-fought match at home last Thursday against Lynden Christian. It was a game where a win would have sent them straight to state. The gym was packed, and the team appreciated the loud and energizing support. The team had never played in front of such a large crowd, and it was memorable for all the girls, especially the seniors. Then on Saturday the team traveled to the

King’s School in Shoreline to play Annie Wright in a game where the winner would move on to the state tournament, the loser out. The match could not have been any closer. After dropping the first game, Vashon stormed back and took games two and three. Game four went to Annie Wright, leaving each team’s post-season hanging on the outcome of a single game. It was a neck-and-neck, nail-biting fight all they way to the end. After falling behind early in the game, the Pirates rallied and tied the game at 9, then tied again at 11, and then again at 13 before finally losing 13-15. It was an amazing effort all the way around, and the coaches and parents said they were proud of the hard work and effort that the ladies put into the season. — Cheryl Pruett is the mother of a Vashon volleyball player.

The 1A competition took place at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Groen, a commuter student who has been one of Vashon’s top runners this season, finished in 60th place out of 143 girls in the 3.1-mile race. Groen said she worked hard to make it to state this year after just missing qualifying her freshman year.

Rowers face off with neighbors to the north at two regattas in Canada By MARIANNE METZ LIPE For The Beachcomber

During the last weekend in October, the Vashon Island Rowing Club headed to Victoria, B.C., for a double-regatta weekend. Over the course of two competitions, the junior crew took three first-place wins, one second place and two third place awards. Vashon’s masters team earned one firstplace win, as well as one second-place and two thirdplace prizes. The two events, hosted each year by the University of Victoria, draw a few teams from the Northwest along with numerous Canadian teams, some coming from as far as Calgary and Edmonton. The Head of the Gorge regatta, a 5km race course running a narrow stretch of water, has been described

as complete madness. The beach master, dubbed “The Angel, and marshals try to keep order as each competing boat moves through the narrow, swirling currents to the start. Vashon had a strong showing in the morning race events. The men’s masters 8 — with Bruce Morser, Colby Atwood, Bob Horsley, Ed Zapel, Mark McKallor, Chad Magnuson, John Jannety, Eric Gill and coxswain Heather Dow — placed first with a time of 14:10.6. Junior crew’s men’s quad, with Baxter Call, Ryan Bingham, Tate Gill and Gus Magnuson, took third with a time of 16:15.6 in an open varsity race where they competed against mastersand collegiate-level rowers. In the afternoon, the women’s high school 8 — with Avalon Koenig, Terra Jane Ripley, Halimah

David Hattery, Jim Hauser, Gary Schoch, Jeff Hoyt row at the Head of the Gorge regatta in Victoria, B.C. Griffin, Kelsey Abella, Charlotte Kehoe, Hannah Russell, Katelyn Carter, Ella McConnell and coxswain Sarah Warner — placed first with a time of 16:16.4. The club’s women’s master quad placed third with a time of 16:15.9, even after having come to a complete stop just before the narrows to avoid crashing with the

Calgary boat, which broke a rudder and passed through at a 90-degree angle. Rowing that boat were Sue DeWalt, Holly Zapel, Marilyn Kleyn and Kim Goforth. Vashon’s men’s master Steve Haworth also placed third, rowing a single with a time of 16:58.4. “So much of head racing is as much skill as it is

luck in getting a clean race, especially with the Head of the Gorge, said Goforth, who is also president of the junior program. The second regatta, dubbed the Head of the Elk, was an 8km race on Elk Lake, just north of downtown Victoria. In the morning, the men’s masters 8, with Haworth, Atwood, Morser, Zapel, McKallor, Horsley, David Hattery, Jannety and coxswain Dow, placed second, finishing in 24:03.1 minutes. The masters mixed 8, with Zapel, Kleyn, Eric Gill, Nancy Foster-Moss, Chad Magnuson, Jim Hauser, Debbie Jackson and coxswain Warner, took second with a time of 27:11.2. In the men’s open quad, again racing against master and collegiate crews, junior rowers Bingham, Tate Gill, Gus Magnuson and Call,

took first in 25:25.9 minutes. The men’s junior quad, with Ky Burton, Yusuf Griffin, Isaiah Mosser-Rohe and Alec Spencer, placed second in 27:31.1. That afternoon, the women’s open quad, with Koenig, Ripley, Griffin and Carter, competing against two college crews, took first place in 29:18.9 minutes. The women’s junior quad, with Abella, Shannon Lipe, Kehoe and McConnell, placed third with a time of 30:07.3. Coach Charlie Helsby said the whole team was strong and poised during both regattas that weekend. “It was simply a great team effort — particularly the two varsity boats that competed against college crews and won, he said. “It really shows the strength of the rowers. — Marianne Metz Lipe is VIRC’s publicity chair.

help pay for school construction. The bulk of the forest was transferred to King County in 2005, after several Islanders advocated for county ownership. Since then, the county has worked with Vashon groups to develop a stewardship plan for the site that entails ecological thinning, with revenue from the harvests going into the forest’s management. It has also built trails and installed parking lots and signage, transforming the once heavily logged forest into a site popular among horseback riders, cyclists, runners and hikers. But the forest still holds the remnants of its historical use, Warren and Loeber said. The 60-acre site where the county plans to thin, for instance, contains a mono-crop of Douglas firs planted by the state some 30 years ago; the trees are now so crowded that the area lacks a natural understory and harbors little to no plant diversity. Once the site gets thinned, Loeber

said, the county and Vashon Forest Stewards will fill in some of the openings with cedar, hemlock and white pine, as well as understory species such as hazelnut, cascara and red elderberry — species prized by a range of resident and migratory birds. The same will happen at the 33-acre site with 70-year-old alders, trees near the end of their lifespan, Loeber said. Some will be allowed to remain as wildlife snags or trees that will eventually topple, providing habitat on the forest floor; others will be removed and sold, again creating openings for other tree and shrub species, he said. “We’ll keep some of the alder, Loeber said. “It grows so fast, almost like a weed. The county undertook a thinning operation in 2007, but it was much smaller in size. Since then, Loeber noted, recreational use in the forest has grown considerably, and he and other county officials worry that some Islanders who know little of the forest’s history will be troubled if they see logging taking place there. “We don’t have concerns. But I think the public might have concerns, Loeber said.

If Islanders attending next week’s meeting express concerns, he said, the county will likely organize some field trips to the site. “Show and tell is the best way to get questions answered, he said. Warren noted that the project is a big one — considerably larger than the thinning operation four years ago. What’s more, there will be some disruption; trails will likely have to be closed to ensure the logging can occur safely. But he said he thinks Islanders will support the effort. The thinning plan is being drafted by Islander Derek Churchill, an ecologist and former member of the Vashon Maury Island Land Trust who developed the 2007 silvicultural plan for Island Center Forest. The county hopes to make money from the effort, funds that will be returned to the forest for trail maintenance. But the project, Warren said, “isn’t being done to raise revenue. It’s being done for forest health. The meeting to discuss the county’s plan will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Land Trust Building.

entrances. “Some of the extra steps we took paid off, Kimmett said. Kimmett, who was at the county-owned forest for both weekends during the hunt, said he talked to several hunters, most of whom were well-informed and cooperative. Those who visited the forest for a walk or bike ride were also cooperative when told they should stay out of the forest during the special hunting season. About half of the hunters were from Pierce County and another quarter were from King County, he said. Six said they were from Vashon. “Overall, no major issues or problems came up, Kimmett said. “We’re feeling good about it.

Around 60 hunters, the vast majority from offIsland, tried to bag a deer during King County’s special 17-day hunting period at the popular Island Center Forest, county officials say. Unofficial tallies indicate eight deer were taken during the hunt, which ended Oct. 31, said David Kimmett, a project manager for the county’s Department of Natural Resources and Parks. Most significantly, he said, there were only a couple of complaints and no accidents or near-misses. County officials put up several signs showing where hunting could or couldn’t occur in the 363-acre site, he said. The county also recently installed plasticcovered, color maps of the forest at its four public

despite a $5,000 DOIT grant this year, the park district estimates the skatepark will be $4,000 in the hole by the end of the year. What’s more, the district is unsure if it will receive any more funds from DOIT. The grant was closely tied to the Vashon Youth Council, which closed this summer. Fundraising for a new outdoor skate park at BARC, meanwhile, has been temporarily put on hold while the park district works out permitting issues, fundraises for its new $1.5 million sports fields complex and focuses on sustaining the existing indoor park. “We’d love to get past brinkmanship every year, being on the brink of disaster, said McCabe. In an urgent email last month, McCabe told BARC supporters that funds needed to be raised, and soon, to get the park out of the red. Almost immediately, McCabe said, parents expressed interest in helping, skatepark usage jumped and some older skaters even came to the park district offices to ask what they could do. Reid, who has a background in marketing, quickly stepped up to chair the BARC stewards group. She decided that the skaters themselves should work to raise the money needed. Last weekend, frequent users of the skatepark began collecting items

for a rummage sale to be held during the first weekend in December. Dubbed “Rummage at the Skatepark, Reid hopes the sale will piggyback on the art studio tour that weekend and bring in at least $3,000 — the amount needed after recent donations to keep the park within its budget. “It seems doable, she said. Tage Rauen, 24, said a large group of kids and teens would be devastated to see the skatepark close. Rauen, who has skated at BARC for more than a dozen years, said it’s one of the only options for Island kids who aren’t interested in team sports. Taking a break from skating one rainy afternoon last week, Rauen stood with some friends outside the cavernous, 3,600-squarefoot structure on S.W. 228th Street and told of how he grew up skating at BARC and eventually became a paid supervisor. He has watched a new batch of kids, many of them 10 or 11 years old, take up skating at the graffiti-covered structure. “It’s really the only thing Vashon has going for it, from my point of view, he said. “It may be expensive to operate, but it also gets used more than the other parks. Steve Schrock, a supervisor who was also at the skatepark that day, said that

so far this year the park has seen 1,050 uses by more than 300 kids, about 75 of whom are regulars. “The numbers are holding their own,â€? he said. Schrock, who is a trainee substance abuse counselor at Vashon Youth & Family Services, said the park provides a safe activity on Vashon, where youth often complain there’s nothing to do and where alcohol and drugs use is significantly higher than the state average. “We need this. ‌ Some kids are not a good fit for organized sports,â€? he said, adding that some parents can’t provide the structure needed to participate it sports. While Reid believes the rummage sale could become an annual fundraiser to subsidize the park, she also knows usage has to increase to keep the park operating. She and McCabe are working together on a campaign to increase awareness of the skatepark, hoping to boost attendance and prevent the same thing from happening next year. They believe many parents and potential skaters may associate skating with illegal activities and misbehavior or would use the park if they knew more about it and some of the kids using it. Rauen, too, thinks some Islanders have a misperception of skaters. “People

jump to conclusions,â€? he said. “They think skateboarders are delinquents or something.â€? In the new campaign, Reid and McCabe hope to paint BARC as a place where kids work hard and gain confidence. Fun, edgy posters are going up around town that feature skaters of all ages — including a couple girls — with quotes about why they skate at BARC. “They may dress funny, but they’re incredible athletes,â€? McCabe said. “You immediately see that what they do requires a heck of a lot of practice and working to be their personal best.â€? Reid thinks that putting a face on the kids who frequent the skatepark will encourage others to use it more. “As people walk around town, they’ll see the posters and they’ll know at least one of the kids. ‌ You could have a valedictorian skating on a board, as well as a kid who just finished an art show.â€? Rauen and other skaters at BARC last week said they were happy to help with the rummage sale to keep the skatepark going. However,

they added, what they’re really looking forward to is seeing the Island finally get an outdoor skatepark — something considered superior in the skating world to indoor parks with wood ramps. The skaters seemed to have done their homework. They recited how much a small, concrete skatepark would cost and noted that such parks have been installed in Greenlake, Capitol Hill and even Forks, a place they pointed out has a smaller population than Vashon. “Skating on wood ramps is a compromise, Rauen said. McCabe said the outdoor project is still in the works. Fundraising has been slow, and just when the district came close to raising the $120,000 required to install the first and largest phase of the concrete park, an unexpected permitting issue put them more than $40,000 behind. They hope to wrap up the permitting process this month. “We will go back to the designers and ask what they can give us for what we have left, she said. Eventually, McCabe

hopes, the outdoor park will be a boost to the indoor program, and she’s investigating other ways to make the skatepark sustainable. Though the district has yet to decide whether admission should be raised again or if it can find another source of revenue, McCabe said she’s pleased to see parents as well as skaters stepping up to help. Deborah M. Silber After a six month battle with adrenal cancer Deborah Silber passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 31, with family & close friends at her side. Deborah was 53 years old & was born in Chicago, Illinois to Harriet S. Silber, a school teacher, and the late Dr. Earl N. Silber, a cardiologist. She graduated from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin, in 1980 with a BA in Biology and went on to study graduate level biology at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA. where she completed her course-work for a Masters Degree. In 1988, she began working at the Seattle biotechnology company Immunex (later Amgen) in the DNA sequencing lab and continued that work until shortly before her death. Deborah’s work was one of the most rewarding and important aspects of her life. In her many years in the DNA lab, Deborah’s scientific contributions impacted many projects and forged many friendships. She cared deeply for her friends and colleagues and delighted in hearing about their families and pets. She had a generous heart and loved giving little treats for her co-worker’s children. Deborah moved to Vashon Island in 1993. Many of us will remember her as a behind the scenes, hard-working contributor to various events sponsored by the Vashon Gay Pride Alliance. She loved art and the art in nature, the poetry of Mary Oliver and the writings of Buddhist Pema Chodron. She was devoted to her golden retrievers, Gabriel and Newton. She will be remembered for her fierce commitment to science, her love of nature, a fondness for dogs & horses, and her kind and caring spirit. She was a champion of the every-day working person and never lost her child-like wonder for many of the simple things in this world. Deborah is survived by her devoted mother, Harriet Silber of Chicago, her loving brothers, Dr. Gershon Silber of Christiansburg, Virginia, Jonathan Silber of Chicago, Illinois and Gary Silber of Jackson, Mississippi. She was a beloved and revered aunt to Laurel, Anne, Christopher, David, Rachel, Kate, Victoria and Wyeth. She was an adored great aunt to Sydney, Macy, Truett, Emerson, Henry and Noah. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 19 at the north end Vashon Grange Hall (10365 SW Cowan Rd) from 3-6pm. At 4:00 pm we will share remembrances. Please join us in honoring Deborah; stories, photographs, and a potluck dish to share are welcome. If you would like to make a contribution in her name, please send to BaaHaus Animal Rescue Group, PO Box 2356, Vashon, 98070 (www.baahaus.org) We deeply miss our dearest pal. May peace be with you beloved friend. You will not be forgotten.

book-buying and the final blow, a growing interest in Kindles and e-books. And while it’s little comfort, the Wilkes note, they’re hardly alone. Last month, Powell’s, a venerable bookstore in Portland, Ore., announced it was laying off 40 employees, while Barnes & Nobles announced the closure of its store at University Village, one of many outlets the chain is shutting down. Nationally, both independents and chains have been hit hard, Jenni Wilke added. According to numbers recently released by the American Booksellers Association, there were 4,000 independent and chain bookstores in 2008, Wilke said. Now, she said, the ABA reports that 1,800 exist. “And there’s no sign of it slowing, she said. “Bookstores are still closing at a consistent rate. Businesses come and go on Vashon, of course. But there’s something special about a bookstore, some say, especially one that’s been around for nearly four decades and that has a storied past.

It was opened by Islander Vivian Conant on Oct. 26, 1973, in the Old Fuller Store at Center. Why it was given the name Books by the Way none of the current employees know, though Dan Chasan, a longtime Islander who knew Conant, always assumed it was because the shop was located on the highway. Conant eventually moved her shop into Vashon town, where it first occupied the small, yellow house behind AJ’s Espresso and eventually moved to a structure on Bank Road, now the site of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue. That structure became the first house at Vashon Cohousing; Betty Martin bought it for $1 after Books by the Way relocated to the small business strip where it now sits and the fire department wanted to get rid of its former structure to make room for a new fire station, Martin recalled. For years, Books by the Way was the only bookstore on Vashon, Chasan said, becoming the center of the Island’s literary life when Islander Juli Morser approached thenowner Susan Montoya to see if she could begin a program of author readings at the small shop. It was a vibrant time for the store. Morser brought several authors to the Island — among them, David Guterson, Nancy Pearl, Dan Savage, Robert Michael Pyle and Sherman Alexie, whose event was held at the Vashon Theatre to accommodate the crowd. current employee who has worked there a little more than a decade, recalled Alexie’s visit as one of the highlights. “It was incredible,â€? she said. “We filled the theater.â€? In 2003, Jan and Charlie Peterson purchased the bookstore, but by then, Charlie Peterson said, it was clear to many booksellers that theirs was an industry on the decline. Indeed, the Petersons were in the process of liquidating a bookstore they owned in Colorado when they purchased Books by the Way. Even so, they made a go of it for about five years, eventually selling to the Wilkes, who had moved to Vashon from Flagstaff, Ariz. Dave Wilke remembers the moment he told Charlie Peterson they wanted to buy it. Wilke asked Peterson what he needed to seal the deal, and Peterson told him $1 in earnest money. Peterson then tore a scrap of paper off of a pad, jotted down $1 and called it a receipt. The Wilkes, many noted, have worked hard to keep the small store afloat. Jenni Wilke was often seen at the store with one of her three young children on hand, helping out or reading a book. She held events at the store — “Harry Potterâ€? release parties, craft parties for Island causes and events that promoted children’s literacy. store — such as “upcycled clothes,â€? outfits made from discarded items. And in one of their bolder moves, the Wilkes last year relocated the store from the western edge of the building to a much smaller space adjacent to the bustling CafĂŠ Luna, installing a glass door between the bookstore and the cafĂŠ to encourage traffic. As his wife stood next to him behind the counter, Dave Wilke said he watched Jenni come to terms with the sale in recent weeks, moving from a place of blaming herself for the closure to a realization that she and her husband did all they could and more to keep the shop alive. “We’ve made big decisions, aggressive moves and personal sacrifices,â€? he said. “And it’s simply gotten harder and more time-consuming.â€? Closing the bookstore is painful not only to the Wilkes but also to their two longtime employees, Morgan and Morser. Both said they saw it coming. Even so, Morser said, she considers it the end of an era as well as the end of job she’s thoroughly enjoyed. Most gratifying, Morser said, was helping a customer choose a book, then having the person return to the store pleased by the selection and wanting help finding another. Such interactions sometimes had a personal, even intimate, feel, Morser said. “People would just open up because you’d find these con-

nections over books, she said. “I love books, and I love people. And a bookstore brought both of them together, she added. Ever resourceful, Jenni Wilke says she’s found a new way to use the space, but without the heavy responsibility of running a small business. She and several other Islanders interested in textiles and fiber arts plan to run a collective storefront, where they’ll sell items, hold classes and possibly even make their wares. Wilke says she’s not sorry she and Dave took on the bookstore. He started reading novels as a result of their ownership, and her interest in literature has only deepened, she said. She’s also met a lot of people, and the couple have found a place for themselves in the Vashon community as a result of their effort to make the bookstore a communitycentered spot. The shop will officially close on Saturday, with the wake the following Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Jenni Wilke said she and her staff decided on the wake at a recent staff meeting, when they discussed how important it was to give Island residents an opportunity to gather in the store one last time. “I think it will provide a sense of closure, Wilke said. “The bookstore’s been on the Island for almost 40 years, and people want the opportunity to say goodbye.

Professor Plum who sometimes uses his alias name Pepe’ did not commit the crime in the library with the candle stick. He is only guilty of having the loudest purr in the shelter. Professor Plum was adopted from VIPP as a kitten and he lived a very happy life until his owner died. The Professor is now looking for a new library or any other room where he can hang out and snuggle with a new person. Being a professor, this boy is very intelligent. Also, he looks quite dapper in his silky black suit. Date of Entry to VIPP 10/11/11 10 year old Hunter is a very loving kitty and enjoys his comforts‌ he enjoys time snuggling with and purring to his human. Hunter is lion colored and has fairly long thick fur. Because of this he has for the past few years been trimmed down into a lion cut during the nicer months of the year. He has lived in a multi-kitty home for his entire life.

Baguette is such a sweet thing, playful, affectionate and funny. She is good with cats and kids. When she needs to go out she will come and get you. She is not a good candidate for a home with stairs due to some arthritis in her hind legs. She can manages 2 steps but not many more. She really wants to be somebody’s special pal. She will sit by your chair when you are reading so you can pet her in between pages! Baguette was very thin when she came to VIPP and her coat was pretty rough. She has since gained a little weight and now has a shiny coat. If you would like to meet Baguette, please contact Vashon Island Pet Protectors at 206567-5222. There is a $125 adoption fee.
