Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow and Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson have added their signatures to a letter from more than 100 mayors calling Gov. Chris Gregoire’s preliminary budget cuts “intolerable, specifically the elimination of the distribution of state liquor taxes and profits. “We in cities and towns understand the state’s serious budget dilemma and sympathize with the difficulties you face, the letter states. “However, we are extremely disappointed to see the depth and breadth of your ‘preliminary choice’ budget cuts targeting cities and towns. The governor’s preliminary cuts are designed to help fill an

The house on the Reed property presently sits unoccupied, but it probably won’t stay that way for long, as several groups in town — as well as a handful of individuals — have inquired about using the 20-acre piece of land. Bought in April 2010 for $1.4
million, the Reed property, located just outside city limits, was purchased by the city’s water utility as an additional water source for the city. But the city has no plans of developing the water right for at least 15 years, leaving the property, which contains a main house,

Pierce Transit to consider boundary changes With the loss of bus service throughout east Pierce County, many of the small cities still paying sales taxes for buses have been wondering exactly what they are getting for their money. Several have even discussed the possibility of leaving the Pierce Transit taxing district altogether. On Oct. 31, the Pierce Transit board of commissioners took the first step toward reviewing the district’s boundaries, directing staff to develop a resolution to convene a public transit improvement conference that would bring together the district’s entire membership to discuss the future of the transit authority. Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson, who sits on the board as the small cities representative, said staff presented the board with the “first blush” of a map showing possible new boundaries that would eliminate from the taxing district most of the cities that turned down this year’s requested tax increase. “It basically mirrored what the vote was,” Johnson said of the draft map. Pierce Transit on Oct. 2 reduced services throughout the county following the February defeat of a tax measure it said was needed to keep the system afloat.

Commuters on the Pierce Transit Route 496 from the Bonney Lake Park and Ride to the Sumner Sounder Station can breathe a little easier as Pierce Transit Board this past week decided to maintain the route through at least June 2012. Originally slated to disappear in February, Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson, who serves as the small cities representative on the board, said a decision was made to maintain the route for at least four additional months. “It’s an important route,” Johnson said. “It’s the one route out of all of them that people need and use.” The 496 is the only Pierce Transit route The ballot measure would have increased the transit’s sales tax collections by 0.3 percent, or 3 cents per $10. However, even with the additional taxes, much of the eastern part of the county was set to see reductions in service, prompting voters to shoot down the measure. The changes eliminated all routes east of Puyallup, except for the 496, which runs from the Bonney Lake Park and Ride lot to the Sumner Sounder Station. These reductions were made due to a $51 million budget shortfall brought on by the economic recession and loss of Proposition 1 during the February 2011 election. More than 64 percent of voters in the 31st Legislative District, which includes Bonney Lake, Sumner and Buckley,
rejected Proposition 1. Bonney Lake contributes more than $2 million in sales tax revenues each year to Pierce Transit. Combined, the cities that lost service contribute an estimated $4.8 million. The full Pierce Transit board must approve the full member meeting during its next meeting in two weeks. The Public Transit Improvement Conference will take place after that. Johnson said it will be nice to get the member cit-

east of Puyallup still running following the October cutback of services that followed the February failure of a sales tax increase needed to fill a growing budget gap at the transit authority. Pierce Transit Spokesman Lars Erickson confirmed the decision to maintain the route, but said there was still discussion of the hours it would run and added that other services would probably need to be cut to maintain that route, which continues to be very popular. Johnson said the ultimate solution to transit and the 496 route in particular is something that will be made in the future, but said this at least gives them a little more time to work on a transit plan. — Brian Beckley

LETTER FROM 1 expected $2 billion gap in the state’s biennial budget. To the city of Sumner, the loss of liquor tax revenue would mean a hit of approximately $125,000 per year to the city’s budget, City Administrator Diane Supler said. Supler also said the city is concerned because other state entitlement dollars could also be cut in the next budget cycle, meaning an even bigger chunk of the city’s revenues could disappear with the stroke of the legislature’s pen. According to Bonney Lake City Administrator Don Morrison, the cuts would mean a reduction to the Bonney Lake of nearly $200,000. “If we lost (the liquor tax money), that would be about $199,000 a year,” Morrison said, adding, “Those funds are specifically used for law enforcement.” Morrison said the city uses the money to fund two police officers. If the governor’s budget was enacted as is, Morrison said money would have to be made up from the city’s general fund, forcing cuts elsewhere. “It’s a big hit,” he said. The letter asks the governor to meet with representatives from the Association of Washington Cities, on whose letterhead the letter appears, to discuss how to best move forward.

Take a Moment to Reflect on Veteran’s Sacrifices Dear Neighbor, Veteran’s Day is not simple this year. The complexity of the debate in which our nation is currently engaged, can, if we are not careful, obscure the dedication and sacrifice, as well as the humanity, of our American soldiers and veterans. The service and patriotism of our veterans can easily be drowned out by the cries of the pro and anti-war advocates. Looking back, during the “Great War” and World War II, these questions were not asked, as our soldiers were honored for what they did and not for what the conflict itself represented. America and the world took a deep breath and hoped that no such sacrifice would ever be required again. World War II concluded with the dawn of the Nuclear Age- the introduction of weapons so powerful they could destroy all life on Earth. The world paused again, and asked, were these weapons so awesomely dangerous that we would never dare to engage in war again? Unfortunately, the answer was no. We participated in wars in quick succession: Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and then the introduction of a new American policy of preemptive war, in Iraq. In some ways, the face of war has changed. We still see news photos of the shattered bodies of soldiers, the frightened eyes of wounded civilians and displaced refugees. But because of technology, today we can watch warfare on television from our living rooms, watching each missile strike. The effect is surreal, and almost detached, like a science fiction movie or a video game, except to those who are doing the fighting, or to the families of those in combat. Clearly, the purpose of war has expanded. We no longer limit ourselves to fighting for just our borders, or just our borders plus our economic interests. We have begun an unprecedented era of nation-building and preemptive war, and so has begun a new great national debate that is far from being settled. For the second time in our history, America is undergoing much soul-searching over a war. Yet all Americans should realize, regardless of their personal beliefs that our veterans have not chosen the conflicts in which they have been asked to serve. On this Veteran’s Day, we should not forget that all veterans singularly serve the most basic premise: to defend our Constitution and the freedoms that we embrace. They do not have the luxury of deciding the moral justifications of the conflicts in which they serve. I am reminded of how Americans distinguish themselves in war when I think of a man I once knew well, Reinhardt Wemmer, who as a young man in Germany near the end of WWII had just completed flight training. There was no gas left to fuel the fighters, and he was assigned to the German Infantry. His first engagement was the Battle of the Bulge, during which he was wounded and left paralyzed on the battlefield. He was told and believed that Americans would torture and kill him without mercy if he was captured. Two Americans soldiers found him and to his surprise, gave him a chocolate bar and called a medic who saved his life. He told me that as he lay severely wounded upon the battlefield, he resolved that if he lived, he would find a way to become a citizen of the United States. He could not comprehend that soldiers of any nation would treat their enemy in such a humane way.
Bonney Lake Elementary to host open house
World War II was not only a demonstration of our resolve to defend freedom and defeat tyranny, but of our humanity as Americans as well. Acts of humanity, and the restoration of Germany and Japan after WWII are the deep and abiding legacy of our veterans. Today, folks should not be confused by the horrific reports of atrocities that were carried out in Iraq and Afghanistan by private contractors and mercenaries like the now disbanded Blackwater USA, a sad chapter in our history which hopefully will never be repeated in the future. Our soldiers are part of the all-volunteer military that enlisted because of their deep passion to serve our country. It would be proper and fitting if their professionalism and dedication to duty were recognized by us all when we meet them on the street. A simple “Thanks” is more than enough, and indeed is deeply understood, and much appreciated. We have now been at war in the Middle East for longer than all of World War II, and the sacrifices of soldiers who are serving their third, and even fourth tours of duty, are difficult to comprehend. When I look at the pictures from my son’s unit, the US Army 173rd Airborne Infantry, the 69 soldiers who lost their lives in combat, I find each of these young faces deeply haunting. When I talk to veterans and hear their stories, the depth of their experiences humbles me. And so it should be. On this Veteran’s Day, I only wish that every single American could somehow pause for a moment, and find a burden heavy on their heart, and in some way know and feel in its completeness, how deep the sacrifice, and how great the price that has been paid by those who have volunteered to defend our freedoms. Then honor Veterans Day this year by sharing that appreciation with a soldier or veteran this week. You will be glad you did! Christopher Hurst State Representative, 31st Legislative District

Voters are a lot like teenagers Finally, all the campaign fliers, door hangers, advertisements, yard signs and robo calls have paid off. This fall’s election campaign has helped me identify with my teenage children. I think I get it. The messages they’ve been shouting at me for the past couple of years are much more clear. As a voter who has been pushed to the brink of sanity with the crazy blitz of campaign literature and messages, I can identify with my teens. Wow, all that candidate effort can influence me. I’ve learned teens Brenda Sexton and voters share Staff Writer some common threads. Leave me alone. All the television and radio commercials, volunteer phone calls, door-knocking and mailings are me, bombarding my children with information that doesn’t interest them and they don’t care to know. All that election information coming at me is like the sound of my voice droning to them. Eventually they tune me out. Don’t tell me what to do. Teenagers want to make their own decisions. They don’t want to be told what to do. They remind me they’ve been raised to be responsible citizens capable of making good choices and not being swayed by peer pressure or outside forces. Ignoring me. The more I try to force my sage advice on them, the more they turn away. I get the cold shoulder, the eye roll, the big hand, the can’t-hear-you-I-have-my-headphones-in gesture, or, in some cases, the stomping of feet and the shutting of a bedroom door. They can be spiteful.

Donating marrow through the Be The Match Registry could save a life By Neil Johnson For The Courier-Herald
As you may know, in February I was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. With medication it is possible to hold the CML in a chronic phase, however in March I went into blast crisis forcing me to receive emergency chemotherapy at the University of Washington Medical Center. This began my relationship with the Be The Match Registry which helps people who need a life-saving marrow or cord blood transplant. With November being National Bone Marrow Awareness Month, it is important to know how easy it is to become a donor and with thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases needing a bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant, they depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match – someone like you. It is easy to become a member of the registry and potentially save a life. All you need is to be between the ages of 18 and 60, be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet the health guidelines.
The process involves a registration form and swab to the inside of your cheek. Financial donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of testing. You can get more details about the Be The Match Registry by visiting www.bethematch.org or http://marrow.org/Home.aspx. Keep in mind, if you are chosen as a potential donor then all costs related to the testing and donation process are picked up the patient’s medical insurance or the registry. In my case, our insurance will be billed $75,000 for the cost of the donation. Because the markers used in matching are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone from their own race or ethnicity. The most favorable match is with a full blood sibling, but did you know that only 30 percent of patients find a donor in their family? Unfortunately, I was not one of the lucky 30 percent; however I was one of the other 70 percent that was able to turn to the extended human family of Be The Match Registry, so I was fortunate. Adding more donors and cord blood units from diverse
racial and ethnic backgrounds to the Be The Match Registry increases the likelihood that all patients will find the match they need. But even with a registry of millions, there still are not enough matches for all patients, especially those from racially and ethnically diverse communities. Your heritage can make all the difference, so please check into becoming a donor. Looking back at the process I went through, I am thankful there was a young lady somewhere in the U.S. who decided to become a donor. This donor was our third shot after the first two had various issues and were not able to follow through with the donation process. At the beginning of the process we thought I would have many choices since I was Norwegian but, low and behold, we found I am not fullblooded Norwegian, which is why the search for a donor was in the single digits, not the hundreds as expected. As you could imagine, I was nervous about the entire process and what it meant to have a nine out of 10 match

MARROW FROM 6 versus a 10 out of 10 match. What if we couldn’t find a match? And how long could my cancer remain in remission waiting for a match? Once a donor was secured in July you could only imagine my mixed bag of emotions, including excitement when my transplant date was set for Aug. 16. This meant my pre-treatment would begin on July 28 at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The pre-treatment consisted of various tests, pill chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirations, pulmonary testing, spinal tap and other blood work to make sure I could handle the transplant. Once completed, I checked into the UW Medical Center on Aug. 13 and started my final chemotherapy treatment which ultimately wiped out all my hair. I think it was wishful thinking on my part that after my first three chemo treatments (March, April, and May)
when I didn’t lose my hair, that I could hold onto to it during this final treatment. The transplant itself is just like receiving a blood infusion (see picture) and is painless. Any pain or discomfort comes from the chemotherapy treatment and for me I was fortunate during my transplant that everything went fairly smooth compared to how they prepared me for the worst. I had a few tough days, but in the big picture I was told that I was handling the process better than expected. The transplant date changed from the 16th to the 17th due to some issues in collecting the stem cells from my donor, so in the afternoon of the Aug. 17 I started receiving my new stem cells and received my first birthday card from our nurses. During the next two weeks it was a matter of recovery and waiting for my new stem cells to take hold, so once this happened and my white blood cells hit a certain number they released me from the hospital. on Aug. 31 and I started my follow-up treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance on Sept. 1. Today, I am at day 79 post-transplant and we are currently going through my discharge testing. As I transition back to my doctor in Puyallup, I continue to reflect on how fortunate I am to have a second chance at life which would not be the case if the young lady I received my cells from didn’t sign up on the registry, but most importantly stay committed to the process. It doesn’t cost the donor a penny when they are found to be a match, it just costs their time. The donation process is so much easier and less painful than in years past and what greater gift can one person give than the gift of life? Please take a few minutes to get more details about the Be The Match Registry by visiting www. bethematch.org or http:// marrow.org/Home.aspx. Your gift of donation can save a life. It saved mine. Sumner’s avid walkers can look forward to more trails to traverse in the foreseeable future. City council has approved a construction contract with Carter And Company, Inc. on the White River Trail Extension project, for more than $1.72 million. Government regulation holds back technology’s forward march The next time you’re on a commercial airliner, think about this: The GPS navigation unit in your car is more advanced than the technology used by air traffic controllers. The radar-based air traffic control technology used today is almost 60 years old. While it worked well with fewer, slow-moving aircraft, today’s modern jetliners can fly more than a mile and a half in the time it takes for a radar beam to sweep across the screen. Because of that, planes must be kept three to five miles apart. Airplanes forced to fly in wide arcs waiting their turn to land burn excess fuel and add several minutes to the length of the flight. That may seem trivial until you multiply those losses by more than 18 million flights a year. Congestion and weather delays tied to the limitations of radar, cost airlines and consumers almost $10 billion in 2010, a cost that’s projected to grow Don Brunell to $22 billion a year by President, Assoc. of Wash. Business 2022 and $40 billion by 2033. Much of that cost would be eliminated by switching to a GPS-based air traffic control system. Global positioning systems are space-based global navigation satellite programs that provide precise and realtime location information in all weather conditions anywhere on earth. By utilizing GPS, airliners would be able to safely fly much closer together and take direct routes to their destinations rather than being redirected into holding patterns waiting to land. The ability of GPS technology to provide real-time weather information will also reduce weather-related delays and diversions. Congress approved a new GPS air traffic control system known as NextGen in 2003, but it will cost taxpayers and the airline industry more than $40 billion to implement — a daunting task, especially in this era of massive deficits and shrinking profits. Nevertheless, it’s an investment worth making especially because the size of the world’s passenger aircraft fleet will double over the 20 years. NextGen would greatly improve the efficiency of airline travel, reduce costly delays, cut fuel costs and reduce air pollution. The program enjoys broad support on Capitol Hill and in the White House. So, what’s the problem? The cost — and concerns about the federal bureaucracy. NextGen will cost taxpayers an estimated $22 billion for the government portion of the system and another $20 billion for the airline industry through 2025. Before it appropriates the funds, Congress wants detailed budgets and specific timelines from the Federal Aviation Administration for each phase of implementation. Commercial airlines are also wary. JetBlue and Southwest Airlines have installed some of the GPS technology on their planes, thanks in part to government incentives and grants. But only 11 of Southwest’s destinations are set up for the new procedures. According to the Associated Press, the FAA hasn’t yet approved new

Shoplifters, beware Main Street Sumner Downtown merchants institute countermeasures against theft By Daniel Nash Staff Writer
As Deputy Chief Brad Moericke played the security camera footage from Simple Tidings & Kitchen, whispers bubbled up from the shopowners in the Sumner Downtown Merchants meeting. “I know her.” “Me too!” “Why would she do that?” The subject of the footage was a blonde woman in a gray sweatsuit. At first glance, she appeared to be just another shopper perusing store wares on a lazy afternoon. But as she examines the fabric of a t-shirt, her demeanor changes and her head lifts up. “See, now there’s the look-around,” Moericke said. And then—presto!—the shirt’s vanished, squirreled away into her shoulder bag. She continues to browse, and goes on to pocket a few more items: hats and a notebook. Shop owner Suzanne Kipfer steps out to have a conversation with her briefly, then returns to the backroom.
Merchants based in Sumner’s historic downtown are making a concerted effort to combat shoplifting, after security enhancements by a few business owners resulted in catching more offenders. File Photo/To view or buy photos go to www.blscourierherald.com.

Is that a Rockwell in the window? Still lives and store deals at Sumner’s Hometown Holiday Celebration Saturday By Daniel Nash Staff Writer

Celebration from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s the one time each year that window shoppers can stroll down Main Street and see live recreations of scenes from Norman Rockwell paintings. Actors from Ascension Theatre Productions stand in shop windows to fill the role of the emotionally animated subjects that appeared in Rockwell’s work. Hometown Holiday is also one of a handful of occasions on which shopkeepers host open houses. Participating stores will be

Christmas tree farmers getting warmed up The Evergreen Arborist
Yes, it is a bit early to begin to think about Christmas. The pumpkin season just ended and Thanksgiving is lurking around the corner. But America’s Christmas tree farmers are just beginning to get warmed up. They produce a true, “real green product that will create jobs, is grown in the USA and is recyclable. Puget Sound Christmas tree farmers and local retail lots offer a wide variety of species. To help select your favorite tree, the characteristics of the more popular species are listed below. Douglas fir: This tree is generally available as a sheared tree and is the most common species found on tree lots. It has a nice fragrance and a medium-togood shelf life. Because of the thick, bushy crowns, they do
not lend themselves to large or heavy decorations. This species is the easiest to grow because it is relatively problem free. It requires seven to eight years to mature as a Christmas tree. Noble fir: This species is considered the Cadillac of Christmas trees. It grows in a more open pattern, has stout branches, luxurious green needles, a long shelf life and has a nice fragrance. It is popular with families that have large or heavy ornaments. It is usually the most expensive tree because it takes eight to 10 years to mature and is more difficult to grow than other species. Grand fir: This sheared tree is the most fragrant of the native species. It has an attractive needle that makes it a popular choice as a flocked tree. Grand fir trees require eight to nine years to grow

in it. Check the water level daily. A typical 6-foot tree can drink one gallon of water each day and remain fresh for two to three weeks. Do Trees Really Cost So Much? A tree farmer invests many dollars and hard work for six to 10 years before earning any return. Not all will be salable. Some trees will die while others will be damaged by insects, diseases or other natural occurrences before they reach harvest size. For example, out of 1,000 trees planted, 900 to 950 Douglas fir may be salable. However, only 700 to 800 nobles may be marketable because of losses to the above factors. Therefore, a grower needs to receive more money for nobles than Douglas firs to make them profitable to grow. One interesting way to view prices is to look at how much a tree costs and how

long it can be enjoyed by a family compared to other regular activities. For example, if you pay $30 for a Douglas fir or $60 for a noble, they will bring joy and good smells to your home for two to four weeks. If you spend $30 to feed a family of four at a fast food establishment or $60 to attend a movie and eat popcorn, the enjoyment may last from one to four hours. When viewed in that perspective, trees seem to be a pretty good bargain for the time that they bring enjoyment to millions of families. SHOPLIFTING FROM 9 issues would be unique, because the businesses deal in specialty goods, or nonnecessities. Rather than getting vagrants stealing food, or underage kids stealing alcohol, he said, downtown stores would be more likely to attract thrill-thieves and people who might be trying to beat a bad economy; in other words, people you wouldn’t suspect at first glance. “Your best customer might be the person taking you for all you’ve got, he said. during the holiday season. Fortunately, the wholesaler for the stolen products aided the store in tracking down the offenders. The items were found soon after, being fenced on auction website eBay. A similar incident was reported just the day after the merchants’ meeting, in which a caregiver and her client were working together to steal candles. And just the day before the meeting, Sugarbabies was targeted by a customer who ran a bad—and possibly phony—check. “It was a wife and a husband with their child, they had ID—probably fake— their checks were highnumbered, owner Ashley Salas said. “Every sign you would think of to determine whether you had a good check, was there. Salas was fortunate in that she caught the decep-

As of late October, she was pursuing leads. “I love (the idea of the cell phone network), Iselin said. “If we’re known as a town that is diligent in stopping theft, thieves will realize they can’t steal from us. Police concurred, and emphasized the importance of both prosecuting shoplifters who are caught and preventing theft by advertising security measures.

Taping is already known to be a helpful treatment for younger patients with chronic patellofemoral pain, which is quite common among runners with knee-joint misalignments. Recent research indicates as well that the taping treatment also helps relieve pain in adults (average age of 57) suffering from patellofemoral arthritis. These subjects not only showed improvement in their misaligned knee joints, they also reported less pain during squatting exercises. Researchers emphasize that the tape must be applied in the appropriate manner by a physical therapist. If you are suffering from knee pain, whether it’s from patellofemoral osteoarthritis or some other cause, you need to call our office for an appointment right away. Our compassionate manual therapists know how much knee pain can affect your everyday life and we’ll provide the experienced hands-on therapy that you need to get back on your feet. In addition to help with knee pain, we can help you recover from an accident, injury, or surgery. Call 253-826-8520 or 360-802-6756 if you would like to make an appointment. Our addresses are 21525 Highway 410, Suite B., Bonney Lake and 2776 Griffin Ave., Enumclaw. Physical therapy with a personal touch. P.S. According to MRI scans taken of the knees of the adult patellofemoralosteoarthritis sufferers noted above, misalignments of knee joints showed a tendency for the kneecap to sit more toward the outside of the leg.

3-0 win against Olympic messier than it looked By John Leggett Staff Writer
SHS Soccer
Sumner High’s 3-0 soccer victory over Olympic in West Central District play Saturday advanced the Spartans to the next level – a game earlier this week against Hockinson at Sunset Chev Stadium. Results of Tuesday’s match could not be included here, but will be posted at www.blscourierherald. com. The scoring from Saturday’s rather lackluster tilt will stick with longtime Sumner coach Robi Turley for reasons only a coach could appreciate. “We played a really ugly game against Olympic and we did not play well individually as I had to remove several of our best players because they received three mysterious yellow cards,” Turley said. “I didn’t want to risk them getting another one and not being able to play against Hockinson on Tuesday night.” But Turley had plenty of praise for her squad, which cruised to an 2011 South Puget Sound League 2A crown for the second straight year with an 12-0 record. “We had contributions from everyone and we truly came together as a team,” she said. “Because of that we won as a team and I really enjoyed that feeling.” Despite yellow cards directed
at key players like Megan Fenton and Kaylie Rozell, the outcome of the encounter was never really in doubt. Goalkeeper Jamie Lange earned the shutout in goal and Spartan defenders kept Olympic shots to a minimum. It took Sumner’s high-powered offensive attack all of about five minutes to rack up its initial tally, courtesy of midfielder Ellie Degoede, who took an assist from Alyssa Murray and legged one accurately past the unaware Olympic netminder. The next Sumner score, which came only seconds before intermission, was probably the easiest tally Gabby Degoede will score in her illustrious soccer career. An assist by Makinzie Endicott found Olympic’s goalie hopelessly out of position and Degoede only had to knock the ball home from about five feet out to make the score 2-0. Most of the second stanza was played in the middle of the field as both contingents slipped into lackluster play, but there was a solitary offensive jewel provided by Brooke Lancaster. With around five minutes remaining, she launched a rocket that ricocheted off the goal frame and into the goal, past the outstretched arms of the Trojan keeper.

Panthers snag state 16 spot after 3-0 victory Editor
The Bonney Lake High soccer team advanced to the state’s Sweet 16 Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over the Wilson Rams. The shutout against the Tacoma school came at Burien’s Highline Stadium. The Panther victory was sparked by the shutout goaltending of Madi Lowry and a hat trick by Madi Adams. The only goal needed came just two minutes into the contest when Adams scored off an assist by Emily Richmond.
Her second goal came at 36 minutes and the final tally was in the 63rd minute. The win improved Bonney Lake’s season record to 16-2-0 and pushed the Panthers into the Class 3A state tournament for the second consecutive year. A season ago, Bonney Lake advanced to the championship game before falling short. The Panthers’ state tournament opener begins at 7 tonight, Wednesday, against Meadowdale High. The game will be played at Edmonds Stadium. The loser is done for the season

while the winner advances to the state’s Elite Eight. Bonney Lake had entered postseason play Nov. 2, paired against fellow South Puget Sound League 3A foe Peninsula High. The game offered little in the way of drama, as the Panthers won 6-0. In three meetings with the Seahawks this season, Bonney Lake dominated, outscoring Peninsula 15-0. In the Nov. 2 contest, the Panthers received three goals from Adams and one each from Lindsey Hanbidge, Alicia Bowman and Jessyka Seger.
Dreams of state play dashed by Fife By John Leggett Staff Writer
The Fife High volleyball squad took Sumner High’s glass slipper and shattered it into a thousand pieces Saturday at the West Central District tournament. The state-qualifying action took place at Franklin Pierce High School. The Spartan volleyball squad had waltzed into the district tournament, but the dream quickly turned into a nightmare and the match with Fife turned out to be the last action of the
year for the Spartans. In the initial set, Sumner fell 27-25. That first-set heartbreaker seemed to take the wind out of the Spartans’ sails as FHS cruised to an easy 25-15 second set win. In the all-important third set, the Spartans seemed as if they might be in control, but Fife rallied to pound the final few nails into Sumner’s coffin, winning 26-24 and and denying the Spartans the opportunity to play in the state tourney. A Bonney Lake Panther volleyball team that spent most of the 2011 campaign undefeated and on top of the SPSL 3A world had its season come to an end during the weekend’s West Central District tournament at Auburn Mountainview High School. The Bonney Lake bunch suffered a setback to Camas Friday afternoon and was eliminated from state consideration when it lost to Peninsula Saturday morning in heartbreaking fashion. Injuries hit Bonney Lake hard during the last two weeks of the season. After barely claiming second place in the SPSL 3A standings with an 8-2 league mark, Bonney Lake staggered its way through subdistrict play. By Saturday, Bonney Lake did not have much left in its emotional tank, as it had been swept by Camas the day before, having lost a discouraging third set 32-30. Something extraordinary happened in that celebrated third set with Camas though, as the ailing black cats seemed to arch their backs and make a statement. Even though BLHS did not emerge victorious in the third set, the Panthers staged a courageous swan song, with half the squad hobbled with illness and injuries. Saturday, Bonney Lake tangled with the Seahawks, losing the first two sets 25-18 and 25-17. The struggling Panthers scratched and clawed their way back for a 25-23 victory in the third set. Peninsula overwhelmed the Bonney Lake gang in the fourth set 25-10.

Illness staggers Lady Spartans Panther runners finish in 12th By John Leggett Staff Writer
The Bonney Lake cross country team didn’t exactly paint the course red during Saturday’s Class 3A state cross country championships but, considering the competition, Panther runners didn’t fare all that poorly, either. The 3.1-mile race was staged at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The Panther girls team battled illness, but with junior juggernaut Marie Wilson blazing the trail, still finished sweet 16th among 25 teams with 367 points. Wilson crossed the finish line in 31st place overall with a time of 19 minutes, 31 seconds. Next came Sierra Espinal, 82nd with a time of 20:26. Madisen Liddle rounded out the top three with a personal best clocking of 20:56. On the boys side of things, Bonney Lake had only Nolan Weber. He bolted out of the gate and led all harriers in the state after the first 800 meters of the race, but couldn’t keep that torrid pace and finished with a time of 17:33. Sumner High’s girls cross country unit finished 12th during Saturday’s Class 2A state meet, staged on a challenging 3.1-mile course at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf Course. The lone Spartan boy to make the state trip was Coltin Tanner, who returned to the state scene as he promised his coach, Kristin Martin, finishing 99th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 29 seconds. Sun Willows is a hilly and demanding course, not known for producing memorable times, but according to Martin the SHS girls booked some decent times. “Four of our girls PRed (set a personal record) and one hit her season best time, Martin said. “Additionally, the top five runners finished at under 22 minutes. The first Spartan girl to complete the course was Gabby Phelps, who crossed the finish line in 29th, shaving a minute off last year’s state time with a clocking of 19:46. Following Phelps were sophomore Abi Hensler in 50th at 20:16, Natasha Wilson in 98th, 21:24; Robi Long, 101st, 21:16; and Amanda Riley, 112th, 21:52. Sumner High’s football team closed out the 2011 season with a 49-19 nonleague victory over Klahowya Friday at Sunset Chev Stadium. “It was a great way to send out our seniors and another way to get in another week of practice and a game for our kids coming back,
coach Keith Ross said. “It was a chance to cap off a season that was a little different than expected. The Spartans’ final score came on a 1-yard run by senior Ronnie Hinze. Sophomore David Kakuk split the uprights for the point after. The Spartan defense held Klahowya scoreless in the first and third quarters.
