SkyMan: Federal Way’s superhero County takes on
mitigation role for wetland projects
He helps the homeless and even breaks up muggings BY GREG ALLMAIN gallmain@fedwaymirror.com
Skyler Nichols, also known as SkyMan, is Federal Way’s very own Real Life Superhero. Nichols, who recently made an appearance during Federal Way’s Recycle Palooza, hopes to help his hometown in whatever way he can through his alter ego of SkyMan, the Tri-Colored Crusader. Nichols decided to try and help in Federal Way, after being an active member of the Seattle group of Real Life Superheroes (RLSH), whose most famous member is Phoenix Jones. “I’ve been operating “I’ve stopped in the greater Seattle/ a few King County area for muggings, just by my 18 months now, and presence, I live here in Federal and my Way, and I’m really trying to become more colorful, local,” he said. “I see exuberant Federal Way hurting, costume.” and I’d like to help Skyler Nichols out.” Nichols, 28, says he sees the effects of the economic downturn on Federal Way, and the effect on some of Federal Way’s residents, such as the transient population. He used The Commons Mall as a glaring example of the slow decay that has overtaken Federal Way and many cities in the Puget Sound area. “I grew up in this mall. It used to be filled. Now it’s just got anchor stores that keep it going, like Target and Sears,” Nichols said. “It’s sad, this place. You walk through it, there’s so many empty storefronts. Suburbia in general. Auburn, Kent, Burien. We’re all hurting.” With Phoenix Jones more well known as being a “crime fighter,” Nichols is more interested in helping those who are vulnerable, like the homeless. His own experiences of not having a roof over his head have led him to try and help the most disadvantaged in the area. “I want to help people…I consider

King County Executive Dow Constantine recently announced a proposed mitigation credit program when it comes to developers and their impact on local wetlands. According to the executive’s office, the program — the first of its kind in the state — would allow de-
velopers to pay a fee to the county instead of completing individual mitigation projects when their projects affect wetland areas. “With this proposal, we couple greater predictability for builders to greater certainty that we will successfully protect and restore streams and wetlands,” Constantine said. “This approach affirms King [ more COUNTY, page 8 ]

Nichols, pictured outside The Commons Mall, is more interested in helping those who are vulnerable, like the homeless. GREG ALLMAIN, The Mirror myself a humanitarian first as a real life superhero. One of the reasons I decided to start with charity work and homeless outreach is it was simple, and it was what I could do,” he said. “I was homeless for a time in 2003. I was so drug addled and not wanting to hurt my father anymore, I went and slept under the viaduct for four months. And it’s just…I see
these people hurting.” Nichols is more focused on helping those who can’t help themselves. He said he has patrolled the streets and has even broken up a few muggings in his patrols. “I have done my fair share of patrolling, so I know what street crime is about. Nearly four years ago, Danica Childs disappeared at age 17. Her last known whereabouts: a Kent motel associated with drugs and prostitution. Dianne Zoro and her children lived in an apartment near 272nd Street and Pacific Highway South — a Federal Way intersection notorious for prostitution activity. Months before vanishing, Danica began dating a man she met on the bus. He was rumored to be a pimp, Zoro learned, and Danica was starting to hang out with “the wrong people.” In hindsight, that was yet another red flag from her at-risk daughter that
Zoro wishes she would have taken more seriously. Danica had no history of running away. Despite a few behavioral issues, she seemed to be on the right track with high school graduation on the horizon, Zoro said. Shortly before disappearing, Danica was [ more TRAFFICKING, page 7 ]

Thomas Jefferson High School has been at the center of controversy for a sizable segment of vocal parents. From the implementation of new policies, to questions about school leadership, TJ has been a hot topic at Federal Way School Board meetings dating back to last spring. In all of it, there has been little comment made by those who saw no problems at TJ. During the Oct. 25 meeting of the board, TJ parent Joe Williams said he felt TJ’s new programs and policies are good ones, and that former principal Marsha Denton may have ended up being the sacrificial lamb due to the district’s leadership failing to properly engage and communicate with the TJ community. Williams touched on the accelerated academics program, saying he feels it gives an opportunity to those who normally wouldn’t be exposed to it. “If there isn’t a good fit between that student and the course, the student has the opportunity to opt out, Wilson said. “So when I look at that, it doesn’t seem like such a bad deal. Standards based grading was the next program Williams touched on. He feels the policy helps eliminate external forces when it comes to student grading. “(It’s) a program, that from my perspective, attempts to drive out any subjectiv-
ity, and possible favoritism that might exist in a grading system,â€? he said. “If this program is aimed at making sure all students, whether they’re quiet, unpopular or just misunderstood, are graded the same as the gregarious, popular or other well adjusted students‌that seems like it’s trying to promote fairness, so I can buy into that.â€? Williams touched on the perceived controversy surrounding former TJ principal Denton, who was reassigned last month to an administrative position at the district’s central office. Denton was the target of some TJ parents’ frustration. Williams said that with the large amount of change that took place at TJ and throughout the district in the recent past, the burden was on the district to make sure there were open lines of communication in order to ensure that the change was as smooth as possible. Williams said he never had a bad interaction with Denton, and feels that she ended up being the “fall guyâ€? for the district’s lack of leadership. “I have been in numerous meetings with the former principal, in one on one and in group settings,â€? Williams said. “In all of my dealings with her, she has always demonstrated a high level of professionalism and courtesy. Even when circumstances called for much less. In all my dealings with her, I saw she had a true and genuine concern for all of the students.â€?
Mirror will change frequency of publication FROM STAFF REPORTS
Effective Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, the Federal Way Mirror will be changing its publishing frequency from twice weekly to once per week on Friday. The last Saturday edition of the Federal Way Mirror will be published Dec. 31, 2011. While many newspapers are concerned about declining readership due to the Internet age, the Federal Way is taking the opposite approach — purposefully reducing its frequency of distribution in favor of focusing more resources to publishing an online edition with breaking news
content and regular community features that readers have become familiar with in their printed editions. The Federal Way Mirror will stay focused on providing high-quality local editorial content to readers, along with targeted advertising packages to local and national advertisers.
“Our goal is to be the pre-eminent provider of local news and advertising in Federal Way, said Rudi Alcott, publisher of The Mirror. Based in Washington state, Sound Publishing newspapers, classified publications and partner newspapers serve Wester
at the Knutzen Family Theatre
Washington and Western Oregon communities. Sound Publishing’s broad household distribution blankets the entire Greater Puget Sound region, extending north from Seattle to Canada, south to Salem, Ore., and westward to the Pacific Ocean.

Federal Way is more business friendly As someone who is often quick to criticize government, I want to also be quick to acknowledge success. Look in my election crystal ball Elections for 2012 and 2013 have already started. But before we start speculating on those races, there is a more immediate question: Who is going to win next Tuesday? As always I consulted my panel of experts, which was comprised of several well connected political types and two guys standing on a street corner. In Federal Way, Susan Honda will win over Roger Flygare for election to the city council. Honda emerged from the primary with a big lead and appears to have made a tactical decision to be cautious in her positions to maintain her lead. It may have cost her The Mirror endorsement, but she will still win. Flygare just had too much ground to make up. Dini Duclos is a strong candidate and will be re-elected to the council over Kieth Tyler. Tyler had some interesting land use ideas, but didn’t have the money to get his message out. The closest race will be between incumbent Jack Dovey and challenger Bob Celski. Conventional wisdom says Dovey will win, although this should be the closest of the three council races. Claire Wilson will be elected to the school board over Gail Crabtree, and Danny Peterson will win over Liz Drake. Drake has stopped campaigning to take a new job as a principal in the school district. Mark Thompson will be re-elected to the South King Fire and Rescue board of commissioners over Timolin Abrom, and James Fossos will win over Jerry Galland — although Galland did strike a chord with the public on the SKFR budget issues. In the race for the board at Lakehaven Utility
District, incumbent Tim McClain will win over Louise Wessel. In Auburn, John Hayes Holman will upset incumbent Virginia Haugen for a seat on the city council, and Wayne Osborne will defeat Frank Lonergan for election to an open council seat. The Bellevue City Council races have become the battlefield for the city’s future growth as powerful development interests have lined up on different sides. Incumbents Claudia Balducci and John Chelminiak along with John Stokes are backed by Wright-Runstad, while Kemper Freeman and Bob Wallace are supporting Aaron Laing, Michelle Hilhorst and Patti Mann. Freeman and Wallace are also financing an independent campaign expenditure program to help their candidates. The stakes and the dollars are huge. You may recall that Chelminiak is the councilman who was attacked by a bear several months ago. Look for Stokes, Balducci and Chelminiak to win in close elections. At the Port of Seattle, incumbents Bill Bryant and Gael Tarleton will win. At the county level, Sherril Huff will be re-elected director of elections. Lloyd Hara is unopposed for assessor. In the biggest King County Council race, longtime incumbent Jane Hague looks like she will survive in a close race with Richard Mitchell. Mitchell may be the best challenger that Hague has faced in a long time, but her switch to support the car tabs fee appears to have undercut one of Mitchell’s main arguments. In West Seattle, Joe McDermott will defeat [ more ROEGNER page 5 ] Bob Roegner

Imagine standing outside a Federal Way nightclub when a big guy runs out the door, rips off his shirt in the middle of the street and gives every indication that he is about to violently assault a bystander. Would you try to be a hero and help the innocent bystander? A new breed of real life superheroes is rapidly becoming mainstream. The Seattle area’s own masked hero, Phoenix Jones (aka Benjamin Fodor), recently came to the aid of patrons outside a Seattle nightclub. He was just kind of hovering nearby, then landed in the middle of a confrontation very similar to the scenario described above. The superhero, wearing a brightly shining muscle suit, shot pepper spray at the aggressor — then flew off to stop a fight that was allegedly in progress. Seattle police arrested the real life superhero, which resulted in Fodor removing his mask and thus disclosing his secret identity. At the time of writing this report, he had not been charged. Some of these superheroes wear capes and even bulletproof vests. It seems to just be a matter of time before the avengers will arm themselves with weapons more deadly than pepper spray. After all, the last Batman movie that I saw showed Batman surrendering to modern times with firepower that equaled that of a special forces unit. The problem is that mixing guns with masks really gets some law enforcement officers upset. Right now, the only law enforcement officers that get to wear the fabulous black Baklava headgear in public are SWAT team members. This could change if other officers start moonlighting as superheroes. But the volunteer Batman-types will need a governing body — a Justice League of America, perhaps — to ensure that high superhero standards are maintained. Edward Stinson, a writer from Boca Raton, Fla., who advises real-life superheroes, tells aspiring superheroes: “You’re no longer in the shadows. You’re in a new era. … Build trust. Set standards. Make the real-life superheroes work to earn that title and take some kind of oath.” The website www.reallifesuperheroes.org lists 660 members around the world. The site even lists superheroes in England, and many do other charity work. Come on, Federal Way service clubs. Every club should be sponsoring at least one superhero. A whole network of masked vigilantes has appeared in Seattle over the past year. According to the Tacoma News Tribune, some heroes advocate for a non-profit association of heroes to conduct fundraising and outreach — and tactical superhero training.

good and the weather enjoyable, a blocked road is a major inconvenience. Hours later with our building still blocked with orange cones, I emailed Mayor Skip Priest with my frustration, explaining that this was further evidence that the city is not business friendly. Within 20 minutes, public works director Cary Roe was at my office, along with a
handful of people involved with the project to investigate my complaint. While the city was not to blame, they made no excuses, apologized for the inconvenience and worked with the construction crew to ensure we would have no further (unannounced) disruptions. My thanks to Mayor Priest, Cary Roe and others at City Hall
who are truly dedicated to the success of our community. Hopefully this letter will help prove the Federal Way is in fact a businessfriendly city.

This shows that she is familiar with the school district and how well or not so well it has performed over the years. In addressing the school district’s alarming dropout rate, Crabtree was spot on by identifying the most important time when students need to learn, and that is at the elementary age level. She contends that once they go on to middle school without learning the fundamentals at the grade school level, it is often too late, and they eventually drop out by the time they reach high school due to discouragement or because they have a feeling of inferiority. Also, the fact that Crabtree has never had a paid position in all her time working with children speaks volumes about her character and her interest in helping kids succeed. This shows she truly has been involved in children’s lives, even though there was no financial gain involved. Whether it has been as a campfire leader or a volunteer at Totem Middle School, she has shown she cares about children and their development. In addition, because she has never been part of the education establishment, she can bring an objective perspective to the school board

[ KNAPP from page 4] Masked volunteers first appeared in the 1970s in places like San Diego and now include folks from all walks of life. In Federal Way, there’s a superhero dubbed SkyMan who focuses his efforts on aiding the homeless. Any young entrepreneur you meet, however, may someday become a real life Batman. It doesn’t take billions of dollars to patrol the night in the name of truth and justice, unless you want to have a fully equipped secret cave under your mansion — or you are the Department of Homeland Security.

then (stemming chiefly from a violation of Jerry’s right to videotape) fleshed this out. Commissioners serve at the pleasure of the citizens. They should have known not to restrict a citizen from exercising the right to videotape meetings. For that reason, I believe a change is needed to bring the board closer to the citizens it serves. I intend to vote for Jerry Galland for SKFR Commissioner. Unfortunately The Mirror did not endorse Susan Honda. I think it should have! Susan and her husband, Bruce, have been residents of the greater Federal Way area since at least the 1970s (probably longer). Susan has been a longstanding civic volunteer, her latest service is chairman of the diversity commission and chairman of the arts commission. Susan has proven her desire to better Federal Way through her dedication to these volunteer positions and more. Unfortunately, I live outside the city, but if she is elected I will have the opportunity to work with her. As one of the commissioners at Lakehaven Utility District, I feel we have some common goals — that of service to the citizens. Susan has a servant’s heart and will do a great job ensuring Federal Way’s future. She is someone I have grown to know and trust, and I find her to be the best choice for the voters of Federal Way for this position.

Reasons to pick Galland for fire commissioner After seeing so many campaign signs and other advertising for Jerry Galland’s opponent for South King Fire and Rescue commissioner, I finally went to the Public Disclosure Commission to see where he is getting all of his money. Sure enough, another career politician bought and paid for by the unions. Then I went to see where the money Jerry is spending came from. Jerry also has put action to his campaign promise of being open and accessible. Even though he is not required to file reports with the PDC, he freely sent in all reports so that anyone can see who is paying for his campaign. Personal funds, every penny. Jerry has promised to represent the citizens of the district. He is not beholden to anyone for his campaign and this proves to me he will be a much better commissioner than his bought and paid opponent. I am voting for Jerry Galland. He has proven that he is a man that stands up for the citizens and the best interests of the fire department, not just his union buddies or friends in the administration. Join me in making positive change. Elect Jerry Galland fire commissioner.

[ COUNTY from page 1] County’s commitment to innovation and collaboration with regulatory agencies, the environmental community and the development community.” According to state law, builders are required to avoid and minimize impacts to wetlands and other similar areas as much as they possibly can. When such impacts are unavoidable, builders are required to mitigate them. The costs of that mitigation typically comes out of the builder’s or developer’s own pocket, something this proposal hopes to address, according to the executive’s office. Under this plan, builders would voluntarily buy “mitigation credits” to meet those obligations to preserving wetlands. The county would pool those payments and, in turn, design, construct and maintain wetlands mitigation projects itself. “By pooling mitigation payments, King County can build larger restoration projects with greater benefits to the environmental health of Puget Sound’s watersheds,” Constantine said. “And lands where projects occur will be permanently protected as open space, ensuring a legacy of a healthy environment for future generations.” The developers in the county feel this proposal will relieve some of the onerous and time-consuming aspects of wetlands mitigation, said Sam Anderson,
executive director of the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish counties. “The county is proposing to provide people with additional mitigation options; it is not a new regulatory authority,” Anderson said. “This new mitigation tool would shift some of the burden of navigating the regulatory process off the private sector and onto King County government. This should streamline the permitting process for builders and facilitate homebuilding in King County in ways that respect natural environment.” According to the Executive’s office, the proposal falls in line with 2008 federal regulations regarding “in-lieu fee mitigation.” The state Department of Ecology and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would co-chair the regulatory oversight committee to make sure everything’s above board. Ted Sturdevant, director of the DOE, feels this program allows for a preemptive strike on wetlands mitigation. “In-lieu fees make the solution ready ahead of the need,” he said. “When a particular project cannot avoid damage to wetlands, a mitigation project will be available, and in many cases, already under way, pre-designed to maximize the environmental benefits for that watershed. That’s a win for all concerned, and we’re pleased to approve this program.”

South King Fire reports a clean state audit
the exit conference. The required audit is part of a regular annual review of the department’s financial practices and finances conducted by the Washington State Auditor’s Office. The state budgeted 128 hours of staff time for the audit, which the district pays for out of its general budget. The cost of this audit was $10,855. This year, however, some of the budgeted hours were spent investigating four separate citizen hotline complaints. The audit concluded that “the district was not in violation of any applicable RCW’s, BARS guidance, or other authoritative sources” in any of the areas the auditors examined. The audit found the complaints to be totally unsubstantiated and unfortunately detracted from time that could have been spent reviewing compliance in other areas.

Raider girls, Beamer boys will run at state Saturday in the Tri-Cities; Decatur’s Zellerhoff finishes seventh BY CASEY OLSON sports@fedwaymirror.com
The Thomas Jefferson girls cross county team will make the familiar drive across the mountains to the Tri-Cities Friday afternoon. The Raiders qualified for the Class 4A State Cross Country Championships Saturday with a fourth-place finish at the Westside
Classic at the American Lake Golf Course. The finish earned the Raiders the automatic berth to the state championships, which will be held at Sun Willows Golf Course in Richland. It will be Jefferson’s 10th trip to the state meet in the past 11 years. The 2011 edition of the TJ girls was led by Leah Kiyohara. The senior finished up in 16th-place overall in a time of 19:44.5 over the 5-kilometer course at American Lake. Mount Rainier’s Jordan McPhee (18:12.1) won the race ahead of Union’s Alexis Fuller (18:44.8). Bellarmine Prep won the team title with 77 points, two points ahead of Tahoma. The Federal Way school district exhibited its dominance Thursday at the West Central District Diving Championships at the Foss High School Aquatic Center. District divers snagged five of the top-six finishes during the meet, which included the SPSL and Narrows leagues. Todd Beamer’s Elizabeth Kenna Ramey Wiley won the district title with 372.80 points, outdistancing Jefferson’s Madison Kellar (357.95). Jefferson’s Monica Church finished up in third place with 335.10, Federal Way’s Tia Thomas was fifth with 314.25 points and TJ’s Shelby Church was sixth (309.20). All six will dive at the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships at the King County Aquatic Center Nov. 11-12. Federal Way’s Kenna Ramey was the only district swimmer to win a district title in the pool. Ramey cruised to the title in the 100-yard butterfly in an automatic state-qualifying time of 59.15, outdistancing Olympia freshman Sarah Norman (59.73). Ramey, a sophomore, also finished second in the 50 free behind Kentridge’s Emily Mohr in a time of 23.97. The winner of the Jefferson/Eastlake game will play the winner of a game between Federal Way and Snohomish. The Federal Way-Snohomish winner will host the first-round game on Nov. 11 or 12. How they got here: Jefferson finished up in fourth place in the SPSL North Division to earn the program’s first-ever berth into the postseason with a 5-4 record. The Raiders’ SPSL North losses came to Tahoma, Kentlake and Kentridge. They were also beaten by Federal Way in a non-

Eastlake has played in the Class 4A tournament four times since 2001, including an opening-round loss to Curtis last season. Why Eastlake will win: The Wolves spent much of the season as the top-ranked team in the state and have played numerous big games this season. Eastlake vaulted to No. 1 after beating perennial power Skyline, 28-21, on Oct. 21. The Wolves also have blowout wins over Snohomish and Issaquah. Eastlake’s offense is led by senior quarterback Keegan Kemp and senior running back Ryan Lewis. Kemp threw for over 1,000 yards with eight touchdown passes. Football: Eagles blow out TJ to finish unbeaten BY CASEY OLSON sports@fedwaymirror.com
For the first time since the magical year of 1976, the Federal Way High School football team finished the regular season unbeaten. The Eagles (9-0) routed their cross-town rival, Thomas Jefferson, Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium, 34-8, to keep the momentum rolling
heading into the postseason. The win avenged a 31-28 loss to the Raiders (5-4) last season, when the Eagles finished just 4-6. But this year was a complete turnaround. Federal Way used 224 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries from senior D.J. May to win the non-league contest in front of a big crowd. The Eagles had a total of 421 yards of total offense, including 350
yards rushing. Jefferson only managed 154 yards on the night. The unbeaten season was the Eagles’ first since reaching the state championship game in 1976. Federal Way lost to Snohomish in the title game. Friday night, the Eagles took a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to touchdown runs by D’Londo Tucker and Rod Jones. Jefferson attempted
to get back in the game with their only touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a 2-yard run from senior quarterback K.W. Williams. The two-point conversion cut the Federal Way lead to 14-8. It was Williams’ 26th touchdown of the season. But May took over the rest of the game. The senior scored on a 10-yard run before the half to give

Federal Way a 21-8 lead into the locker room. May then scored a pair of third quarter TDs, including an 85-yarder to start the second half. He also had a 9-yarder. Soccer: TJ gets help, makes postseason
Why Jefferson will win: The Raiders definitely don’t know what to expect against Eastlake. This is the first time the program has ever played in a postseason game. But that fact might actually help the Raiders. The senior-laden roster can play loose because the expectations for TJ are a lot less than the expectations at Eastlake. The Raiders’ offense goes as senior quarterback K.W. Williams goes. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder had a monster season for Jefferson, becoming just the third player in the history of the SPSL to throw and rush for over 1,000 yards. Williams finished the regular season with 26 total touchdowns, including 15 on the ground and 11 through the air. Williams finished with 1,244 yards rushing and nearly 1,200 yards through the air. The Raiders’ offense does have other dangerous weapons besides Williams. Senior receivers Rithvik Lagisetti and Gunner Sonnenfeld both caught multiple touchdowns during the season. Sonnenfeld finished with over 400 yards receiving and three touchdowns and speedster Lagisetti led the Raiders with five TD catches, averaging over 20 yards a catch. It was the Jefferson defense that was the problem during the team’s four losses this season. The Raiders’ gave up 38 points to Tahoma, 49 to Kentlake, 18 to Kentridge and 34 to Federal Way and also had the tendency for giving up the big play. During TJ’s five victories, the Raiders gave up an average of 12 points a game, which included 30 against Kent-Meridian. The Jefferson defense is led by linebackers Sonnenfeld, Luafatasaga, Williams and Shane Seauame, along with 310-pound tackle Jefferson Aumua.
Decatur High School’s Victoria Braun attempts to take the ball from an Auburn Mountainview player during Thursday’s 2-0 loss to the Lions in Federal Way. The Gators will open the postseason at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Burien . CASEY OLSON, The Mirror will play Thursday against the third-place team from the Greater St. Helen’s League for a berth into districts.
BY CASEY OLSON sports@fedwaymirror.com
The Thomas Jefferson girls soccer team will play in the postseason. The Raiders beat Kentlake Friday afternoon, 4-2, and got a little help from the Mount Rainier Rams to earn the South Puget Sound League North Division’s fifth, and final, berth to the playoffs. To earn the postseason berth, TJ needed to beat Kentlake and have Mount Rainier beat Auburn Riverside, who sat two points ahead of TJ entering the final game. Jefferson senior Lindsey Dahl tallied all four goals during the Raiders’ win, which moved TJ to 6-7-3 in the SPSL North. Jefferson played Rogers Tuesday (after press time) for the SPSL’s ninth and 10th seeds to the West Central District Tournament. The loser of the TJ-Rogers match
[ JEFFERSON from page 10 ] finished the season with 480 yards rushing and 10 touchdown runs. Lewis finished the regular season with 1,299 yards on only 120 carries for an average of nearly 11 yards a touch. The 6-foot, 185-pound Lewis also tallied 20 touchdowns. The Wolves also have a tendency for the big play. In seven of their nine games, Eastlake had at least one touchdown of over 60 yards. The Eastlake defense has also been a very good group this season. The Wolves have allowed just 73 points during the first three quarters and have been extremely tough against opposing teams’ run games. Eastlake is allowing less than 100 yards on the ground.
DECATUR
At the Class 3A level, the Decatur Gators ended their regular season with a 2-0 loss to Auburn Mountainview Thursday afternoon. The loss left the Gators 6-4-0 in the SPSL 3A division and in fourth place. Decatur will take on Kennedy Catholic at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Highline Stadium in Burien. Kennedy finished third in the Seamount League with a 7-1-3 record.

They have five players who have rushed for over 100 yards this season and five different players have scored rushing touchdowns. Junior Peter St. Marie leads the Panthers with nearly 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns. St. Marie has been over 100 yards four times with his best game coming during a win over Stanwood on Oct. 14 when he ran the ball 15 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns. Conner McDonald has over 600 yards rushing and five touchdowns. The Snohomish offense is led by quarterback Mitchell Stewart, who was 6-for-6 for 143 yards and two touchdowns during Friday’s win over Jackson. It’s been a tale of two seasons for the Panther defense. During their five-game losing streak to start the year, Snohomish gave up nearly 30 points a game. Since, the Panthers

are giving up just 14 points a game. Linebacker Tanner Perry leads the Panthers in tackles from his linebacker position. Why Federal Way will win: The Eagles just need to keep doing what they have been doing all season long — running the ball effectively and playing smash-mouth defense. The Eagles’ offense is clicking on all cylinders after getting the services of star tailback/defensive back D.J. May back. The senior sat out two games after an injury. But he has proven himself healthy the last two weeks after running for 137 yards on just six carries during a win over Spanaway Lake and 224 yards on 19 carries in a win over TJ Friday night. On the season, May has 1,068 yards on just 103 carries and 15 touchdowns in just seven games. He also has a pair of interceptions for touchdowns on defense. quarterback in D’Londo Tucker and Evan Elliot. The pair have combined to throw seven touchdown passes on the year. Junior Mike Tate is the Eagles’ leading pass catcher with three touchdowns and nearly 500 yards. The Eagles have dominated on the defensive side of the ball during the SPSL season. Federal Way has given up a grand total of 105 points on the season and has pitched two shutouts on the way to the SPSL South title. The Eagles had far and away the best defense in the league in terms of yardage and scoring. Federal Way’s front seven features a pair of college commits in Jordan Pulu and Uso Olive. Pulu, a middle linebacker, has verbally committed to Washington State, and Olive, a 6-foot, 320-pound defensive tackle, will play at Portland State. Linebackers Albert Havili and Rod Jones are also big-hitting, impact players on the defensive side of the ball.
